By kindergarten, our knowledge of agents has unfolded into a powerful intuitive theory that enables us to thrive in our social world. In this thesis I propose that children build their commonsense psychology around a basic assumption that agents choose goals and actions by quantifying, comparing, and maximizing utilities. This naive utility calculus generalizes infants' expectation that agents navigate efficiently, and captures much of the rich social reasoning we engage in from early childhood. I explore this theory in a series of experiments looking at children's ability to infer costs and rewards given partial information, their reasoning about knowledgeable versus ignorant agents, and their reasoning about the moral status of agents. Moreover, a formal model of this theory, embedded in a Bayesian framework, predicts with quantitative accuracy how humans make cost and reward attributions.

Resumo:

My dissertation is a selection of essays that reflect upon human potential, particularly but not exclusively, within educational environments. I offer theory and practices that suggest that under the right conditions educators and students will move towards the far reaches of their own creative capacities. I offer my own experience and practice as an exemplar of possibilities. I make proposals about educators and education of educators that represent a paradigm shift from centralizing curriculum and content to focusing on care, nurturance, subjective and inter-subjective understanding, and development of educators. The reader is invited to see educators as central, and is encouraged towards the possibility that educators must be supported, encouraged, and cared for in order to support emergence of their vitality, first for themselves and subsequently for students. I outline an approach that puts human beings in educational environments first in practical and specific ways. Integration of personal experience and curriculum material is explicated. The importance of personal inner work for educators is highlighted. Inner Work is characterized as a personal and spiritual process. The claim that educators need to have group facilitation skills is made and evidence offered. Philosophical and theoretical background from education, eastern and western philosophy, humanistic and transpersonal psychology, process-oriented methods, and counselling psychology are drawn upon. The approach is holistic and systemic. The human is viewed as important but not separate from other living beings or the environment. The values of presence, care, and deep democracy underlie the ideas. The importance of relationality and I-Thou connection are explicated. The writing and research draws on a variety of qualitative approaches, including, living inquiry, autobiography, and self-study, as well as conceptual, narrative, poetic, auto-ethnographic, heuristic, and analytic methods. The material, personal, and ephemeral are investigated as integrated parts of the Dao-Field of education and life.

Resumo:

Rolling element bearings are the one of the most widely used machine elements in the industry. The most important criterion in bearing selection is the endurance life. The first attempts on the prediction of the endurance life of rolling elements bearings are done by Lundberg and Palmgren in 1950s (Harris, 1999). Their work adopted as an ANSI, ABMA and ISO standard which is widely used in industry today. The basic assumption of Lundberg-Palmgren formulation is that no matter how small the load applied on rolling element bearing, all material in the stressed volume is subject to fatigue failure. In this study, four main life theories
Weibull, Lundberg-Palmgren, Ioannides-Harris, and Zaretsky on rolling element bearings have been investigated. Three-dimensional finite element models of a bearing&rsquo
s inner ring and rolling element have been prepared. The stress fields within the inner ring and the ball with respect to the applied load are obtained numerically. The fatigue life of the inner ring has been predicted by two methods that are widely used for fatigue analysis

-N method). Obtained results are compared with ISO formulation. As a result of the investigation, S-N and &
#56256
&
#56624
-N methods are determined to give more conservative results than ISO method for higher loads that cause stresses above the fatigue limit of the material. The used methods for bearing life prediction recognize the existence of the fatigue limit stress. Hence as the stresses within an operating bearing do not exceed the limit stress, the bearing can achieve infinite life. It is also observed that load variation has a direct influence on the bearing life. When the load significantly changes from the levels which create stress above the fatigue limit to the levels that result stress is below the fatigue limit, the bearing would have higher endurance life than predicted by ISO method.

Resumo:

Sexual violence affects one in five women in the UK, has vast consequences, and affects all areas of an individual’s life, from the relationships with significant others and with the world to the most intimate part of the self, as it crosses the boundaries of the body. Yet the literature in this area is mainly quantitative and relies on legal definitions and medical models that depict an image of a damaged woman in need of fixing. Qualitative studies have recently focused on the process of sexual assault recovery; however, few studies explore the inner resources – those that come from within – that women draw on through this experience. This study explores women’s experiences of inner resources after sexual assault and/or rape from a feminist phenomenological standpoint. Six women participated in semi-structured interviews using object elicitation – facilitating the communication of their experiences through an object – which were then analysed using an Interpretative Phenomenological Approach. Three overarching themes emerged from the data: “The Will to Live” captures the drive that keeps women alive and moving forward, is experienced as inherent to them, and continues to resurface in times of need. The “Warrior“ depicts the ongoing battles women fight, with themselves and against external opponents, to regain and maintain control over their lives, and to improve the lives of other women. The Growing Self portrays the ways in which women create nurturing and safe spaces in which to process and transform, and in which they consolidate and validate their sense of self by continually learning and developing. In the Discussion section, the findings are reviewed in relation to the wider literature through a feminist lens. This study adds to the understanding of inner resources as inherent parts of women’s self, thus constantly interacting and developing. Through providing insight into how women acknowledge, develop, and create their inner resources in their healing journey, this study contributes to the research and practice of counselling psychology, and will hopefully be helpful to those who work with women who have experienced sexual assault and/or rape.

Författare:Elin Larsson och Ida Persson, studenter vid Magisterprogrammet i Projektledning vid Karlstads universitet. Bakgrund: Agila metoder är ett samlingsnamn för ett antal processer främst inom mjukvaruutveckling, men även för projektledning (Cervone 2011). Detta arbetssätt kom under mitten av 1990-talet som svar på en önskan om ett mer flexibelt arbetssätt och intresset för dessa metoder har ökat markant de senaste åren (Lindvall et al. 2002). I en omfattande studie kring bland annat motivation har Amabile och Kramer (2011) definierat termen inner work life som de processer som tillsammans bearbetar de intryck som en person får utifrån arbetsdagens händelser. Beroende på hur dessa händelser påverkar personen presterar denne mer eller mindre bra på sitt arbete. Problemdiskussion: Enligt Tessem och Mauer (2010) har allt fler organisationer börjat använda sig av agila metoder med ett gott resultat på deltagarnas känsla av motivation. Vilka faktorer i de agila metoderna är det egentligen som bidrar till känsla av motivation? Forskningsfråga: Vad i den agila projektarbetsformen är det som påverkar inner work life hos projektdeltagare i praktiken? Syfte: Undersöka projektdeltagares upplevelser av den agila projektarbetsformen utifrån de teorier kring inner work life som presenteras i Amabile och Kramer (2011). Metod: Undersökningen baserades på en kvalitativ ansats i form av intervjuer utifrån en teorietisk förförståelse kring det agila arbetssättet och motivation. Teori: Den teoretiska grundramen bygger till största del på de teorier som Amabile och Kramer (2011) presenterat kring inner work life. För att nå en god förståelse presenteras även bakgrunden till agila metoder och detta specifika arbetssätt, samt andra forskares syn på motivation bland de som arbetar enligt de agila metoderna. Empiri: Sju intervjuer med projektdeltagare från tre olika projekt men i ett och samma företag har genomförts och utgör studiens empiri. Analys: Det insamlade intervjumaterialet har bearbetats och analyserats utifrån den teoretiska förförståelsen. Slutsats: Det som i det agila arbetssättet främst påverkar projektdeltagarnas inner work life är de dagliga mötena, tavla med lappar som beskriver olika arbetsuppgifter och projektets status samt teamets samarbete.

Resumo:

Population ageing is sometimes perceived as a threat. Demographic change, however, is not all doom and gloom, but is very diverse and can therefore also be shaped in many ways. Our look into the inner diversity of the changing population pyramids makes this clear. The depiction of the past 30 years in the selected pyramids impressively shows how the situation of different generations has changed with regard to important areas of life such as family, education, employment and mobility. The presentation of small-grained data for individual years of age allows a detailed insight into these developments.

Resumo:

Social skills are essential to building empowered and cohesive communities in ethnic diversity. In a world with massive population movements and growing anti-immigrant sentiments, schools stand out as important platforms to instill key social skills into our children to build inter-ethnic cohesion. Achieving this requires the implementation of rigorously tested educational actions. This brief provides the evaluation results of a particular educational program that was implemented in a high-stakes context where the ethnic composition of schools changed abruptly due to a massive refugee influx. The program significantly lowered peer violence and ethnic segregation in schools, and improved prosociality in children.

Resumo:

Marrickville is located in the western heart of inner-city Sydney and is the beneficiary of the centrifugal process that has forced many creatives out of the inner city itself and further out into more affordable suburbs. This locality is built on the lands of the Eora nation. It is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the country but is slowly being gentrified creating tensions between its light industrial heart, its creative industry community and inner city developers. SME’s, co-working spaces and live music venues, are all in jeopardy as they occupy light-industrial warehouses which either have been re-zoned or are under threat of re-zoning. Its location underneath the flight path of major air traffic may indeed be a saving factor in its preservation as the creative industries operate across all major sectors here and the air traffic noise keeps land prices down. Despite these pressures the creative industries in Marrickville have experienced substantial growth since 2011, with the current CI intensity sitting at 9.2%. This is the only region in this study where the cultural production sector holds more than half the employment for specialists and support workers, when compared to creative services.

Nesten ni av ti arbeidstakere drikker alkohol. Dette blir ofte forklart med alle de positive aspektene bruk av alkohol har i sosiale sammenhenger. En kartlegging utført av Statistisk sentralbyrå viser imidlertid at 17 prosent av befolkningen har et drikkemønster som kan betegnes som risikofylt (Halkjelsvik & Storvoll, 2014). Økt alkoholkonsum, herunder også arbeidsrelatert alkoholkonsum, henger blant annet sammen med økt tilgjengelighet til alkohol (Frøyland, 2005). Alkoholkonsum på et risikofylt nivå er forbundet med sosiale, medisinske, jobbrelaterte og økonomiske problemer (Babor, Higgins-Biddle, Saunders & Monteiro, 2001). Det er vanskelig å gi et klart svar på hvor grensen for risikofylt drikking går. Grenseverdier på 14 alkoholenheter pr. uke for kvinner og 21 enheter pr. uke for menn har blitt foreslått (Fauske, 1993). Babor et al. (2001) har fremhevet at såkalt "lavrisikodrikking" innebærer maksimalt 20 gram alkohol pr. dag maksimalt 5 dager i uken. Det amerikanske National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (2016) understreker at grenseverdien for risikodrikking går ved 7 enheter pr. uke (og maksimalt 3 enheter på én dag) for kvinner og ved 14 enheter pr. uke (og maksimalt 4 enheter på én dag) for menn. Likevel vil slike grenseverdier alltid være kulturspesifikke, og i Norge har man funnet det hensiktsmessig å operere med verdier på 8 alkoholenheter pr. uke for kvinner og 13 enheter pr. uke for menn (Nesvåg & Lie, 2004). Forskning har vist at det er behov for å kartlegge mer enn bare antall alkoholenheter over tid for å vite noe om reell risikodrikking. Eksempelvis vil forhold som hvor mye en drikker ved hver drikkeanledning kunne medføre mer negative konsekvenser for sykefravær enn hvor mye en typisk drikker over en gitt periode (Bacharach, Bamberger & Biron, 2010). Dette kan forklares ved at helsekonsekvenser av høyt gjennomsnittsforbruk først viser seg over tid, mens episoder med stordrikking (såkalt binge-drikking der en drikker store mengder alkohol ved én og samme anledning) gjerne medfører midlertidige funksjonsnedsettelser (eksempelvis "fyllesyke") som resulterer i sykefravær (Bacharach et al., 2010; Salonsalmi, Laaksonen, Lahlema & Rahkonen, 2009). Individuelle forskjeller vil også spille en rolle med hensyn til hva som er risikofylt drikking. Det er individuelt hvor mye en tåler og andre aspekter ved livsstilen, for eksempel om en er fysisk aktiv, vil kunne påvirke hvor mye en tåler før negative konsekvenser inntreffer. For enkelte grupper vil ethvert alkoholinntak kunne betraktes som risikofylt. Dette gjelder for eksempel: (1) personer som skal kjøre bil eller håndtere maskiner/verktøy, (2) personer som bruker medisiner som interagerer med alkohol, (3) personer som har en medisinsk tilstand som kan forverres av alkohol, og (4) personer som er gravide (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2016). I Norge drikkes det lite i direkte arbeidssituasjoner, men alkoholbruk relatert til arbeidssammenhenger hevdes å være utbredt (Frøyland, 2005). Sammenkomster som inkluderer alkohol foregår da på fritiden, men i regi av arbeidsplassen, kunder/klienter eller på initiativ fra kollegaer. Dette skjer dermed i gråsoner mellom arbeid og fritid. Nesvåg (2005) fant at 23 prosent av det samlede alkoholkonsumet blant et utvalg ansatte i privat norsk næringsliv var arbeidsrelatert. Flere studier har pekt på at ansatte, både på ledernivå og medarbeidernivå, har positive forventninger til jobbrelatert alkoholbruk, herunder forventninger om at alkohol er en effektiv strategi for å mestre arbeidsbelastninger og at alkohol bidrar til å skape gode fellesskap og sosiale relasjoner (Cooper, Russell & Frone, 1990; Henderson, Hutcheson & Davies, 1996). Normer og forventninger utvikles og formes i relasjonelt samspill, blant annet på arbeidsplassen, (Kjærheim, Mykletun, Aasland, Haldorsen & Andersen, 1995) og disse normene og forventningene påvirker ansattes alkoholvaner (Ames & Janes, 1992). Ansattes alkoholnormer og –forventninger kan således betraktes som uttrykk for en felles kultur på arbeidsplassen, som i større eller mindre grad kan gjenspeiles i de ansattes alkoholbruk. Tradisjonelt sett har det vært gruppen med store alkoholproblemer som har fått tilbud og oppmerksomhet gjennom arbeidsplassens helse-, miljø- og sikkerhetsarbeid. Her har man i de senere årene sett en endring i retning av økt fokus på den betydelig større gruppen som drikker risikofylt. Dette er bakgrunnen for prosjektet WIRUS, som er finansiert av Helsedirektoratet. I dette prosjektet deltar blant annet en privat bedrift innen olje- og gassnæringen. Denne rapporten er en presentasjon av denne bedriftens resultater fra fire av områdene som inngår i WIRUS-studien: (1) alkoholbruk, (2) arbeidsrelaterte alkoholnormer, (3) alkoholforventninger, og (4) situasjoner tilknyttet den aktuelle bedriften der alkoholbruk inngår. Målet med denne rapporten er å beskrive alkoholbruken, arbeidsrelaterte alkoholnormer og alkoholforventninger blant ansatte i denne bedriften, og beskrive hvilke jobbrelaterte situasjoner ansatte i bedriften drikker alkohol. Rapporten kan brukes som et kunnskapsgrunnlag for arbeid med ruspolicy tilknyttet arbeidsplassen, og i gråsonen mellom jobb og fritid.

Executive Order 13112 requires federal agencies to report invasive species costs to the National Invasive Species Counsel (NISC) annually. NISC then reports to Congress to increase awareness of invasive species and encourage inter-agency cooperation. Since 2005, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has provided an annual estimate for the Civil Works (CW) business lines. Traditionally, USACE estimates have been informed by broad assumptions, as many invasive species costs are not itemized. This study sought to develop a method to improve these estimates. A demonstration analysis was conducted for the Chicago District Navigation Business Line and was used to inform recommendations for a nation-wide analysis. The demonstration revealed invasive species-related costs represent about 0.2% ($64,000) of the district’s Navigation Business Line. Invasive species costs are subject to many variables, such as the type, prevalence, and impact of invasive species, as well as the number and type of navigation projects. The Chicago District results are not presumed to be indicative of other districts’ invasive species costs. Rather, the demonstration informed the development of an invasive species cost estimating method that can adapted for each CW business line, as well as variations in invasive species and projects across geographic regions. This report describes the demonstration analysis and presents a defensible framework for quantifying the costs of invasive species to the USACE CW program.

This paper provides an insight on the gender impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Caribbean. The analysis makes use of the April 2020 online COVID-19 survey that the Inter-American Development conducted in all six Caribbean Country Department member countries. We find that the pandemic is having different effects on men and women. For example, job losses have been more prevalent amongst single-females, whilst business closures have been more prevalent amongst single-males. Quality of life also seems to have worsened more for single-females than for single-males and partners (married or common law partnership) and domestic violence against women has been on the rise. Although the coverage of social assistance programs has increased substantially during the pandemic, we find that more targeting of households with single females could be beneficial, particularly as they show lower levels of financial resilience. Going forward, we recommend further gender targeting in social assistance programs and the collection of gender-disaggregated data that will allow for more thorough investigation of the gender effects of these types of shocks.

First arrivals are the primary waves picked and analyzed by seismologists to infer properties of the subsurface. Here we try to solve a problem in a small subsection of the seismic processing workflow: first break picking of seismic reflection data. We formulate this problem as an image segmentation task. Data is preprocessed, cleaned from outliers and extrapolated to make the training of deep learning models feasible. We use Fully Convolutional Networks (specifically UNets) to train initial models and explore their performance with losses, layer depths, and the number of classes. We propose to use residual connections to improve each UNet block and residual paths to solve the semantic gap between UNet encoder and decoder which improves the performance of the model. Adding spatial information as an extra channel helped increase the RMSE performance of the first break predictions. Other techniques like data augmentation, multitask loss, and normalization methods, were further explored to evaluate model improvement.
