The global use of resources such as materials, energy, and water has surpassed sustainable levels by many accounts.  The research presented here was explicitly normative in its aim to improve the understanding of, and make sustainable change toward highly systemic issues of resource management.  The core methods chosen to work toward this aim were bottom up action research procedures (including stakeholder engagement processes) and industrial ecology analysis tools.  These methods were employed and tested in pragmatic combination through two of the author’s case study projects. The first case study, performed between 2009 and 2012, employed a multi-stakeholder process aimed at improving the cycling of construction and demolition waste in the Stockholm region.  The second case study produced a strategic tool (Looplocal) built for facilitating more efficient regional industrial resource networks. While the highly participative aim of the cases required a larger contribution of resources than that of more closed studies, it is arguable that the efficacy of approaching the project aims is improved through their employment.

This thesis is composed by three essays and provides empirical and methodological contributions to the Industrial Organization literature. The first essay (chapter 2) analyzes the welfare impacts of the Brazilian Biodiesel law. The second essay (chapter 3) develops an alternative estimator for dynamic games. The third essay (chapter 4) applies the methodology developed in chapter 3 to build a dynamic oligopoly model for Brazilian banking industry. Chapter 5 concludes the thesis and provides some directions for future work. Chapter 1 analyzes market effects of Brazilian biodiesel regulations. Biodiesel was introduced in Brazil in 2005, mixed with mineral diesel to produce the BX blend (X stands for the percentage of biodiesel). Even in small quantities, the percentage of biodiesel has a positive impact on final price of BX because the production costs of biodiesel are higher than those of mineral diesel. In order to analyze the welfare consequences of this price increase, I use a static partial equilibrium framework. The results show that the current proportion of biodiesel in the diesel mixture (5%) increases consumers' price by 1.7% and decreases the consumption by 1.5% compared to the scenario without biodiesel. Also, an increase in the biodiesel percentage to 10% would raise the price by 3.5% and reduce the consumption by 3%. Chapter 3 provides an alternative estimator for dynamic games. Estimation of dynamic games is a numerically challenging task, in chapter 3 we propose an alternative class of asymptotic least squares estimators to Pesendorfer and Schmidt-Dengler's (2008). The estimator we propose is based on the equilibrium condition of the game when represented in the space of payoffs - in contrast with Pesendorfer and Schmidt-Dengler's (2008) that work in the probability space. Our estimator reduces significantly the computational burden. This reduction is specially significant under the linear-in-parameter specification where our estimator has an OLS/GLS closed form that does not require any optimization. Also, we show that our estimator is asymptotically equivalent to Pesenrorfer and Schmidt-Dengler's (2008). This implies that there is no theoretical cost of using our estimator. Monte Carlo estimations show that our estimator has good small sample properties and provides significant reduction in the computational time when compared to Pesenrorfer and Schmidt-Dengler's (2008) estimator. Chapter 4 applies the methodology developed in chapter 3. We estimate a dynamic oligopoly model for the Brazilian banking industry. The results are used to build counterfactuals to examine the effects of the privatization of public banks on the number of bank branches in small municipalities. We find that public banks are not strategic and their presence generate positive spillovers on the private banks' profits. The model however, is not able to disentangle the nature of this spillover. Also, the counterfactual shows that the number of branches operating in small markets would drop in a privatization scenario. Chapter 5 is the conclusion, I discuss the limitations of the current work and provide some directions for future research.

This dissertation addresses the design and implementation of a lighting management system for industrial environments. The main objective of this system is to provide advanced control to already existing lighting installations in order to reduce power consumption and increase the overall energetic efficiency, without significant changes to the lighting infrastructure. In industrial environments, conventional lighting installations are usually built with high power lamps and basic on/off control through manual switches and contactors. The idea of the proposed system is to provide an automatic control that adjusts the illumination levels, measured by a set of sensors, to user-defined values. This is achieved by actuating on the contactors and turning on/off specific lamps or groups of lamps. For example, during daytime when natural light is higher, the system should compensate by reducing the number of lamps that are on, thus reducing power consumption and increasing the system efficiency. The study on lighting management system begins with an introduction to the problem of high power consumption of industrial lighting installations and possible solutions. It is followed by a description of available solutions aimed at industrial clients. Devices and technologies that can provide a more cost-effective, flexible and reliable solution are also presented. A system design overview follows, providing the insights that lead to the strategies selected for system development. The main design guidelines along with individual system components are also presented. This conceptual study was critical, allowing the comparison of different possibilities, leading to the selection of the presented solution. Upon defining the strategy to follow, the actual system was designed and implemented. The main components are described separately in order to provide a better perspective on the system’s operating principle. The implementation cost of the projected control system was also calculated in order to assess competitiveness of the device. In the end, an overview of the achieved objectives and the obtained results are given. Conclusions are derived from the work presented in this dissertation, along with guidelines for future work.
W środowiskach przemysłowych, konwencjonalne instalacje oświetleniowe są zwykle zbudowane z lamp dużej mocy i podstawowego sterowania, zbudowanego z przełączników i styczników.

This dissertation addresses the implementation of a lighting management system especially designed to operate in industrial environments. assuming a solution as environmentally friendly and concerned about the overall comfort of all its employees. The system was built with a master /slave topology, in order to give the user enough interactivity. Has the possibility to be used in standalone mode, thereby increasing the versatility of the created product. This is intended to constitute itself as a valid alternative to systems that are on the market in the implementation of new facilities and may still be used as un upgrade of existing facilities without meaning a disproportionate financial burden. The designed system has an investment return. This work also addresses the importance of utilization in industrial environments of LED lamps, including the new high power LED lamps, which allow the development of more efficient solutions and the emergence of new concepts of lighting management systems. Recent studies realize the extraordinary evolution of technologies related to this theme and the projections that we can do for the future point to their widespread use. Being essentially a work of theoretical investigation, it was enriched with a practical component that supports the conclusions presented.

Standardized information modeling is important for interoperability of CAx systems. Existing information standards such as ISO 10303 STEP have been proposed and developed for decades for this purpose. Comprehensive data structure and various implementation methodologies make such standards strong in support of different industry domains, information types, and technical requirements. However, this fact also leads to increased implementation complexity and workloads for CAx system developers. This licentiate proposes the development architecture, STEP Toolbox, to help users implement standards with a simplified development process and minimal knowledge requirements on standards. Implementation difficulties for individuals are identified with analysis on implementation of the information standards in three aspects: tasks, users, and technology. Then the toolbox is introduced with an illustration of design of behavior and structure. Case studies are performed to validate the toolbox with prototypes. Internal and external observation has shown the around two-month learning process skipped and a great amount of workload reduction in implementation with the utilization of this architecture.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Two fundamental aspects in modem business success are performance management and physical asset management. The current problem in the asset management environment is the lack of structured performance management, which is required to effectively control and enhance the dynamics of the asset and its life cycle. The result is ineffective assets with high life cycle costs, which will consequently influence the bottom line and return on investment, negatively. An Asset _eerformance Management Model (APM2 , pronounced A-P-M square) was developed. A sound theoretical foundation together with the experience of a leading asset management consultant resulted in the realization of a model that (i) gives a balanced view of asset performance, (ii) link asset performance to strategic business objectives, (iii) facilitates decision-making and problem solving, and (iv) enhances asset control and continuous improvement. The APM2 was developed by rese~ching and integrating five building blocks, which encompass the model requirements. The APM2 consists of two distinct components, namely: • the APM Reference Structure (APMRS), and • a range of APM Dockets. The APMRS is a basic structure that integrates the various building blocks into a framework for providing guidance and control, giving perspective on the entire model and explaining the high-level content of the model. It consists of five levels, each with a distinct focus: • Levell: Enterprise • Level2: Factory • Level3: Process Unit • Level4: Aggregate • Level5: Component The APM Dockets are a subset of the APMRS, where each level has a docket. These dockets are executable, unit-specific procedures, guiding and leading stakeholders towards improved asset performance. Also each of the five levels consists of six similar and inter-related elements. These elements are the foundation for each docket: lement 1: Stakeholders Element 2: Objectives Element 3: Measures Element 4: External Monitor & Targets Element 5: Responsibilities & Decision-Making Element 6: Control & Continuous Improvement Element 7 represents the link to the next level in the APM Reference Structure. • • • • • • Conclusively the APM2,s simplicity and understandability is realized through the APM Reference Structure, while the range of APM Dockets contribute to the practicality objective. The model has a strong theoretical foundation, but at the same time is generic, to be used in a wide range of industries. A leading asset management consultant plans to integrate the APM2 into their asset management program based on the thesis documentation. This application will test and validate the APM2 in practice. It is further recommended that an asset management program, with the associated APM2 , be used in conjunction with the Theory of Constraints and Total Productive Maintenance, because of obvious relationships. Further research is also suggested in relation with some of the experimental asset life cycle phases as well as certain financial considerations.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Twee fundamentele aspekte in hedendaagse besigheidsukses is prestasiebestuur and fisiese batebestuur. 'n Prestasiebestuur Model vir Bates (APM2, uitgespreek as A-P-M square) is ontwikkel.

Measuring the Environmental Performance of industry is an essential element in the movement to minimise the impact that industry has on the environment. There has been a significant increase in interest in this area over the last few years, however it is recognised that the available literature still tends towards the conceptual and theoretical and there is little practical advice for a business wishing to undertake environmental performance measurement. This project has concentrated on the practical development of tools and techniques for measuring environmental performance in a large, complex engineering company, using LucasVarity as an example. The portfolio discusses the general trends and approaches in environmental performance measurement, explains the specific aspects developed in practice and their results. Finally, the general conclusions for industry are discussed.

(Trade union recognition for the Swaziland Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Industry 1982 - 1992 from a human resources management perspective). This study has attempted to consider the complexities of labour relations and industrial conflict within a developing African country. A major case study was followed. The research covers the ten year period 1982 - 1992 and follows the interaction and conflict between management Representative of employers and trade union leaders in Swaziland's major strategic industry. The specific conflict issue was that of recognition by the employers of a trade union, as the sole collective bargaining agent for workers within the sugar manufacturing and refining industry. Both parties were constrained within the parameters of legislation more applicable to an industrialised nation than to a third world state. Interaction between participants in an industrial work place occurs within the ambience of the wider society but values, norms and ideologies are reflected individually and in the various sub-systems of that society. A prevailing ideology however pervades the total socio-economic and political system ordered through a framework of rules and regulations determined and approved by the governing elite. In one developing country, Swaziland, the authoritative framework for the industrial relations sub-system during the years 1982 - 1992, was based upon the Democratic Socialist ideology of Western industrially developed states, as catalogued and promoted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Organised labour's values and norms were identical to I. L. O. norms but the rank and file of the worker collectives in Swaziland rarely understood the concepts involved. Employers and managers marginally identified with the concepts but did not fully support their operationalisation. The hypothesis is that it was the impact of the respective values and norms of the employers and their representatives and union leaders which determined the processing of the conflict. The values and norms of industrialised society encapsulated in industrial relations concepts and the notion of collective bargaining embodied in Swaziland's labour legislation contributed little to the resolution of conflict over union recognition. Collective bargaining with its inherent compromise approach provided a model for conflict management and a forum for the exercise of attitudes and actions arising from individual and group values and norms; it did not provide guidelines for conflict resolution. Overt conflict was avoided but the underlying differences and the basic conflict itself were reinforced and prolonged for ten years. The study concludes with the suggestion that a locally developed conflict resolution strategy providing a structure for a consensus approach might have resulted in a long term collaborative environment for industrial relations. Such an environment could lead to economic stability and capital investment of benefit to employers and employees and of vital concern to a developing society.

In large organisations today the amount of products is numerous and it is challenging for senior management to have proper control and understanding over all products. As the product is the most important aspect for an organisation to consider, senior management must have ability to manage investments on products and follow development of product related indicators. Managing products as investment on portfolio level, where products are divided into a limited amount of portfolios is a solution for achieving decent control over product investments on senior management level. Product portfolio management is decision making oriented, where the goal is to make the best possible strategic and financial decisions when allocating constraint resources across the entire product portfolio. The product portfolio management aims to increase strategic fit of chosen new product projects, balance in product portfolio and maximizing value of the products. The product portfolio management is constantly ongoing, cross-functional decision making function which is present in all lifecycle states of the portfolios. In this research the product portfolios are seen as investments for mainly internal use of a decision making process. The product portfolios are items that are embodied into the case company’s product data management system and the product portfolios have own lifecycle states. Approach in this research is constructive, where a current state of the case company is analysed and based on the analysis and the literature review a construction is established. The Research questions are: 1) What are the required product structures in product data management systems to support product portfolio management practices? 2) What are the information elements and their lifecycle states and what they should be in product data management systems to support product portfolio decisions? Results of this research are the current state analysis committed in the case company and the construction of product portfolio management structure and lifecycle states. In the construction a portfolio package is defined. The portfolio package is the item used for embodying portfolios into the information systems. An information model for implementing the portfolio packages into the product data management system is introduced. The construction also presents product structure for implementing the portfolio package into the product data management system. Relation of lifecycle states between the portfolio package and other items in a product hierarchy is assessed in a nested lifecycle model. Two models, required and recommended, are suggested for the company to consider for managing the lifecycle of the portfolio package item. All the results are validated from several perspectives.

This thesis considers how the reader can become a management guru. To this end, it examines the history of management ideas in the period 1890-1990, and identifies those which have achieved widespread popularity. A management idea is the generic term used to refer to any research finding, theory, concept, framework or prescription that maintains currency within the world of management and management education and training. The thesis accounts for the popularity of these ideas. It argues that four sets of factors contribute to the establishment of the popularity of a management idea. First, the idea has to be timely, that is, in tune with social, economic and political concerns of the period. Second, it has to achieve a high level of visibility in order to gain managers' awareness of its existence. Third, it should address the relatively stable and enduring set of managerial needs. Fourth, the idea should, in its content and design, be perceived by the managers as capable of fulfilling those needs. Five literature reviews were carried out. The first identified the six most popular management idea "families". The second was a historical review of the social, economic and political factors which formed the historical milieus from which these idea families evolved. The third literature review uncovered twelve recurring features of these popular management ideas. The fourth examined managers' needs for such ideas, and the fifth examined how management ideas were marketed by companies and consultants. These literature reviews produced a set of hypotheses, some of which were tested in the empirical part of the study. These related primarily to the link between management needs and the characteristics of the ideas themselves. Both business school academics' and managers' reactions to different management ideas were assessed from a phenomenological perspective. This utilised self-completed questionnaires and the analysis of interview transcripts. The research conclusions are that the popularity of a management idea can both be predicted and planned for by enterprising and aspiring management gurus, be they business school faculty or management consultants. The application of the principles described in this thesis should secure for them, both fame and fortune.

The judicious use of energy by industries is a key lever for ensuring a sustainable industrial development. The cost effective application of energy management and energy efficiency measures offers industries with an effective means of gaining both economic and social dividend, also reducing the negative environmental effects of energy use. Unfortunately, industries in developing countries are lagging behind in the adoption of energy efficiency and management measures; as such missing the benefits of implementation. This study is aims at enhance the knowledge of industrial energy efficiency and management strategies in Ghana, by investigating the present level of energy (and efficiency) management practices in Ghana largest industrial park (i.e. Tema industrial area). The study also incorporates the investigation of also investigation of barriers to and driving forces for the implementation of energy efficiency measure; to shed light on the rationale for both the adoption and non-adoption of cost effective industrial energy efficient technologies in Ghana. This study was carried out using a semi-structure interview due to the explorative nature of the study. The interviews were conducted in sessions, in the first session respondents were asked describe the energy management strategies in used in the respective companies. In the second session, respondents were asked to fill a structured questionnaire covering the various aspects of the study. The results reveal that energy is poorly managed in the industrial area and there is an energy efficiency gap resulting from the low implementation energy efficiency measures. In addition the reveals that the important barriers impeding the implementation of cost effective energy efficiency technologies or measures in the surveyed firms principally stems from rational behavior economic barriers, which are deeply linked to the lack of government frameworks for industrial energy efficiency. The study also finds that economic gains related to ‘cost reductions resulting from lowered energy use’ and ‘threats of rising energy prices’ are the most important drivers for implementing energy efficiency measures or technologies.

This dissertation offers an ideational account of the industrial transformation with social gains of two Central American agro-industries during the 1980s and 1990s, the Guatemalan sugar and Nicaraguan cheese industries. Early in this period, both relied on semi-artisanal production processes, poor labor standards and low wages, and a narrow focus on low priced products sold in protected domestic markets. Over the next two decades, processors in both adopted new production models and business strategies that modernized their technologies and work organization, raised labor standards and wages, and repositioned them as formidable competitors in international markets. Remarkably, these industrial transformations occurred in highly adverse political and economic contexts for high-road business, as deep ideological cleavages plunged the countries into bitter civil wars, economic recessions undermined business development, and national states abandoned policies of industrial support. Paradoxically, the same ideological cleavages that tore these societies apart supplied the materials for two distinct teams of top firm decision-makers, the Apostles of Development in Guatemala and the Cooperative Brigadistas in Nicaragua, to transform the sugar and cheese industries. Spurred on by two distinct ideologies, these teams crafted and disseminated new production models and business strategies. In Guatemala, the motivating ideology was Vatican II Catholic social doctrine and in Nicaragua it was Sandinismo. To reveal how the Apostles of Development in Guatemala and Cooperative Brigadistas in Nicaragua enacted the general principles of these ideologies to transform firms in their industries, the proposed explanation deploys a model that highlights the role of two intervening variables in shaping their value-rational actions: (a) their particular interpretations of these ideologies, and (b) their shared professional backgrounds. The former impelled these top firm decision-makers to pursue a narrow range of prioritized moral imperatives and aspirations within the body of their ideology. The latter, in turn, directed their actions toward the business realm and supplied the necessary skills, tools and procedures to enact their ideological principles.

Resumo:
This thesis draws on work done as part of a joint research project on industrial networks in Hungary and Slovenia, in which I participated in studying the types and depth of cooperation between buyers and suppliers [Dyker et al. 2003]. The theoretical motivation for this study is that industrial ties between firms are socially embedded and that this social embeddedness needs to be considered in order to understand the process by which the economies of the post-socialist countries of Europe are integrating into European production networks. We chose Slovenia as a country that has benefited from a continuity of industrial ties and a familiarity in working with Western European companies dating already from the pre-transition period. The top managers of 47 companies in the engineering industries (NACE 29-35) were interviewed about cooperation with their buyers and suppliers. These industries are extremely important to the economy, especially in terms of exports, and our interviews cover a good fraction of these companies. We investigate the specifics of the business environment of companies in Slovenia, and examine how these specifics affect buyer-supplier relations. The research hypothesis is that the current business environment in place and operating in Slovenia has observable effects on inter-firm relations. Differences in business cultures arise not only because of differences in the tangible legal and economic institutions in place, but also from historically produced common understandings and practices which have become entrenched in the everyday interactions of business people. In testing this hypothesis we focused on companies in the complex manufacturing industries, which would most likely benefit from both upstream and downstream interfirm cooperation, and considered how the operating environment affects the consequent forms of cooperative ties. We find that legacies are at least as important as ownership forms in determining company behaviour

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the business management process for small to medium size enterprises (SMEs) and to develop an automated product management system for integrated business processing. Due to the relatively small scale of operation of these companies, they experience difficulties in applying readily available tools in the area of product management. The target of the analysis is to develop a prototype software system for automatic product management. Moreover, this software developed for this thesis is applied to a real business case---that of Inshore Fisheries, a small scale integrated fishing operation in Atlantic Canada. The system consists of six components that are grouped into two categories of input and output analysis. The Input category includes production operations and customer ordering. The Output category includes four performance reports: (1) order invoices, (2) production worksheets, (3) inventory tracking, and (4) periodic income statements. The entire system is implemented using Visual Basic 6.0. The database is designed using Microsoft Access. The four performance reports in the output are designed using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Furthermore, a GUI integrates all components together to form a complete business processing system. Based on the results of the application of this system to Inshore Fisheries, this software solution can be applied to other SMEs by making specific modifications but without revising the basic principle and system design of the software system. This system possesses a great amount of flexibility and extendibility for practical business process decision-making.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze why firms are leaving the defense industrial base and to determine if Dr. Edwards Deming's Management Philosophy can offer a more constructive way of doing business in the Defense Acquisition System. A comparative analysis was conducted between industry's reasons for wanting to leave the defense sector and Deming's Management Philosophy. This analysis determined if adoption of Deming's Management Philosophy can possibly help alleviate industry's existing concerns in addition to providing a means to incentivize industry to remain in the defense sector

Zhang, Qi. "Enterprise-wide Optimization for Industrial Demand Side Management". Research Showcase @ CMU, 2016. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/823.

Resumo:
In the light of increasing volatility in electricity price and availability, demand side management (DSM), which refers to the active management of electricity consumption, has become crucial for the economic performance of power-intensive industries. Due to its time-sensitive nature, DSM is a challenge for industrial plants; however, it can also be an opportunity if sufficient process flexibility is available, which can be leveraged to take advantage of financial incentives provided by various electricity markets. The goal of this work is to develop systematic decision-making tools for industrial DSM at the enterprise level. We identify and address four major challenges: (1) accurate modeling of operational flexibility, (2) integration of production and energy management, (3) decision-making across multiple time scales, and (4) optimization under uncertainty. We develop a discrete-time mixed-integer linear programing (MILP) model that integrates detailed production scheduling and electricity procurement from various sources. The proposed model is proven to be computationally efficient, which can be attributed to the mode-based formulation and the incorporation of a special type of process surrogate model, referred to as Convex Region Surrogate (CRS). In a CRS model, the feasible region is given by the union of convex regions in the form of polytopes, and for each region, the corresponding cost function is approximated by a linear function. For the construction of CRS models, we propose a data-driven algorithm that can be applied to data obtained from the real process or from simulations. Using the proposed integrated scheduling model as a basis, we optimize decisions regarding load shifting, inventory management, electricity procurement, energy storage, provision of interruptible load, etc. The framework is further extended to the supply chain level by also integrating distribution decisions, resulting in a multiscale production routing problem (MPRP). In order to solve large instances of the MPRP, we propose an iterative MILP-based heuristic algorithm that obtains high-quality solutions in reasonable computation times. A strong focus of this work lies on the treatment of uncertainty, which occurs in many forms in industrial DSM problems. We consider uncertainty in product demand, electricity price, and grid contingency events. These uncertainties all have different characteristics and affect the process in different ways; hence, we consider them using different modeling strategies, namely stochastic programming and robust optimization. We emphasize the consideration of risk, which is incorporated into the stochastic programming model using the conditional value-at-risk. In the proposed robust optimization models, we reduce the level of conservatism by implementing appropriate budget uncertainty sets and incorporating recourse decisions in the form of linear decision rules. Computational challenges are addressed by applying reformulations and decomposition strategies. Finally, we examine for linear systems the relationship between flexibility analysis and robust optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed methodologies is demonstrated in several case studies, many of which consider industrial test cases with real-world data provided by Praxair.

I många avseenden mindre komplex.
Sandvik has developed a technique to place sensors inside tubes. This technology has great market potential and can optimize many industrial processes. The finished product should be able to stream sensor data to cloudservices for analysis and reading. The current system requires manual configuration on-site and the installation is labor intensive. This thesis investigates how the system’s hardware can be configured atomically, and how a supporting IT-system could function.A solution is presented where large portion of the installation process has been automated, along with an outline for a supporting system. The solution is evaluated by performing a measurement of the configuration complexity. The evaluation shows that the developed system had increased functionality compared to today’s manual configuration, configuration complexity was not increased. In many aspects, the configuration complexity was reduced.

The current research project focuses on the analysis of the critical issues of industrial heritage management in Italy and the preservation of organizational history within the reuse projects of former industrial sites. The organizational and managerial perspective is crucial on two levels. Firstly, it is important in the analysis of the original significance of the site, and in particular its organizational history, and its conservation within the new regeneration strategy. Secondly, it is crucial at the phase of management of reuse projects and its feasibility and sustainability analysis. Based on the analysis of the literature, a unique classification of the reuse strategies that can be implemented in order to regenerate former industrial sites has been formulated. The exploratory research thus adapts a multiple case study design. Eight Italian case studies have been chosen, one for each type of regeneration strategy. Each case study is explored as a stand-alone entity through the analysis of the local differences and idiosyncrasies of the specific context, the factors that stood behind the choice of the reuse strategy and the way the reuse project evolved through the years. Then, the current management of each reuse project is analysed. The narration and musealization of the organizational history is investigated through the spatial dimension, the level of content and the level of expression. Secondly, the case studies are compared through a cross-case analysis from three different perspectives: issues on the phase of preparation and implementation of the reuse projects, critical issues behind the current management of new projects and issues on the ways of preservation and narration of organizational history within the new project. The research shows that all regeneration strategies are affected by the conflict between preservation and change, by the issue of materiality and selectivity.

In today’s technologically advanced world, every project, especially large, complex projects are very prone to facing different kinds of risks throughout the project timeline. Project complexity plays a major role in the emergence of numerous risks in large projects. In addition, the complexity of projects is on the rise due to various unanticipated characteristics such as, sudden natural phenomena, workplace accidents, increased material costs, etc. Nowadays, project complexity and its corresponding risks are major contributors to project failure. To minimize the impacts of risk, a good and effective risk management (RM) system must be incorporated into every project. An effective RM system should also include the assessment and measurement of its performance, as this can provide real-time updates about its progress, which in turn can be used to make the RM system more effective and efficient. The aim of this thesis is to gain an insight into risk management literature in the field of complex projects, along with understanding of project complexity and the importance of measuring RM performance. In first part of this research, an in-depth review of literature concerning project complexity, project RM and measurement of RM performance is presented. This is then analyzed and validated using two case projects as examples. The literature review covers how a project can develop complexity, its underlying managerial actions, the type of risks different complex projects may face, their management plan and finally, the effectiveness of measuring RM performance. Following this, a qualitative case study method is followed, whereby two case projects are analyzed in order to gain insights into their RM and risk performance management procedures. The empirical analysis and findings of this thesis focus on the importance of RM for complex projects. Through the analysis and discussion, major risks faced by complex construction project, management strategies to mitigate them, RM performance evaluation strategies and the impact of alliance contracting in RM can be understood thoroughly. Overall, this research provides an in-depth overview of project complexity, RM and its performance measurement for large complex projects and it can be used as a basis for further research into RM perspectives in complex projects.

Resumo:
Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) are usually composed of general purpose machines with automatic tool changing capability and integrated material handling. FMSs offer the advantages of high utilization levels and simultaneous production of a variety of part types with minimal changeover time. The complexity of FMSs however requires sophisticated control. In this dissertation a four level control hierarchy along with computationally feasible control algorithms for each level is presented. Decisions are made at each level utilizing the flexibility inherent in FMSs. The proposed scheme has the advantages of ensuring satisfaction of higher level decisions as lower level operating decisions are made, and allows performance and status data collected at lower levels to be fed back and influence future high level decisions. The top level is concerned with the choice of part types and volumes to be assigned to the FMS over the next several months. Within this horizon, production volumes are planned for each period, a period typically being between a week and a month in length. A linear programming model is used for planning at this level. The second level plans daily or shift production. Advantage is taken of the FMSs ability to be configured to respond to different part mixes to allocate tools to machines so as to minimize holding costs. Separate mathematical programming models are formulated to match various FMS environments. A heuristic for solution of a model of an automated production flexible environment is detailed. Computational results are presented. Extensions of this heuristic to other environments are outlined. The third level determines process routes for each part type in order to minimize material handling. Additional tools are loaded on machines when possible to maximize alternate routings, and using the flexibility offered by FMSs to process parts along alternate routes, routing assignments are made to minimize workload assignment. These routing assignments are used by level four for actual routing, sequencing and material handling path control. The level three model is formulated as a linear program and heuristics are used for level four. An example is provided to illustrate the completeness of the decision hierarchy and the relationships between levels.

Resumo:
This thesis is a critical evaluation of the Management NVQ at level 4. It draws on two principal sources of literature: accounts and analyses of the nature of managerial work; and observations and critiques of Competence Based Education and Training (CBET). The Management NVQ is an attempt to set out, in behavioural terms, the activities managers engage in. These may then be used to assist individual development and assess competent performance in managerial work. This study starts by considering contemporary academic accounts of managerial work. Drawing on these, it argues that management may subsume such a wide variety of tasks, roles and responsibilities that attempts to define it in functional terms are unlikely to succeed. Moreover, such attempts do little to distinguish the peculiarly managerial aspect of management work. By contrast, the writings of more radical theoreticians, which focus on the power and authority that managers exercise, provide a far more resilient basis for distinguishing managers from their non-managerial peers. Clearly, this theoretical construction of managerial work is in marked contrast to the model put forward in the Management NVQ and that conflict is explored here. Since this study sought to focus on the NVQ's educational contribution at an individual level, an ethnographic approach was adopted in the fieldwork. Three exemplary case studies were sought out, since in these, the contribution of a competence-based approach to training and development might better be evaluated, and eighteen candidates followed through the qualification. Throughout the study, in all three organisations, the activities that these candidates engaged in, were driven by the demands of the NVQ. The conduct of the workshops, the increasing levels of paperwork in the candidates' workplaces and the emphasis on systems and procedures were all inspired by the need to supply documentary proof of managerial competence. Ultimately, most of the candidates observed in this study failed to do this successfully and gain their NVQs, and the nature of NVQ assessment, together with its impact on the candidates is considered. Finally, the thesis concludes by arguing that many of the problems noted here stem from the rigid and performance-oriented way NVQs are constructed and, consequently, many of the difficulties reported in this study may be expected elsewhere.

In strategic change management and strategic renewal literature, the implementation of strategic initiatives has currently progressed as a novel area, with significant room for augmentation. Strategic initiatives are essential to renewal of the firm’s strategy. They enable improvement in capabilities that allow the firm to more advantageously compete, and are implemented by middle management through Project management. Recent literature in strategic implementation and renewal still lacks specific processes for improving practice and management concerning how strategic initiatives impact to Improve capabilities for the firm. Its significance has been noticed, but the area of implementing strategic initiatives is still largely underexplored. Literature fails to fully incorporate the influential roles of middle management and strategic project management. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how they can contribute to new and/or improved capabilities. It also focusses on how they effectively manage strategic renewal. Focussing on strategy process research, it looks at the implementation linked to product or process Improvement activity. To achieve the research aim, the study utilizes the interpretive approach and Qualitative research using multiple case studies. This is supported by document analysis, observation, and in-depth semi-structured interviews of managers from diverse functions in each of the two large manufacturing firms in Barbados. Empirical evidence collected from October 2011 to March 2014, involves six strategic initiatives. Qualitative data analysis is utilized. The findings reveal some similarities with existing literature and across initiatives and firms, but interesting differences exist, for example involving structural, firm's culture, and levels or application of strategic project management. The degree of sharing and learning which improves capabilities with initiatives, also depends on context, Interactions levels and variation in management roles. Although some strategic initiatives objectives are similar, initiatives differ in nature and approach, so outcomes differ. Related models need to have Inherent flexibility. Factors still limit increasing of middle managers’ strategic role. Further enhancing strategic project management can assist the mediation of factors impacting initiatives, and contribute to improving renewal processes and outcomes. This study contributes to the literature on strategy implementation, confirming that firms structure Initiatives as projects in portfolio to implement for effective outcomes. It integrates strategy process and practice theories to improve strategic initiatives, capabilities and renewal, and with organizational learning and activity theory combined, develops new theory to add to sparse research. Ever evolving and changing market scenarios have increased the competition between organizations to maximize the performance of their products and operations. In this challenging environment performance of product portfolio management (PPM), new product development (NPD), rapid product development (RaDe) have significant impact on their monetary values. To deal with the existing scenarios, the performance management of the product development and its related internal process of portfolio management is very crucial. NPD and RaDe processes result in a new sales item which needs to be effectively introduced in the product portfolio, but the performance measurement is required to develop the sales item and maintain them in the portfolio. This study is researched and worked upon in five stages. The existing targets and KPIs are studied after a through literature review. The current practices of case companies were identified and the similarities and differences were observed. In the end, a new performance management frameworks was developed to manage NPD and RaDe projects including their impacts to the product portfolio. The developed new performance management framework for NPD and RaDe divides the activities into two phases, planning and development. During the planning phase the PPM targets and KPIs will provide analysis and decision making concept to start NPD or RaDe type of product development to create new sales items into the portfolio. The second phase, the NPD and RaDe development, provides metrics for the NPD and RaDe project execution. The developed framework is generic and will be suitable for both RaDe and NPD activities. In the framework, the company and PPM strategy is aligned with the success factors to achieve the required targets, measured through quantifiable or non-quantifiable KPIs to evaluate the success of the new product and its impact to the product portfolio.

Several years ago, Professor Robert Pindyck of the MIT Sloan School of Management created an oligopoly strategy game for use in his course 15.013: Industrial Economics for Strategic Decisions. This game divided the class up into "firms" (generally consisting of two students each) and randomly formed industries, each consisting of three firms. Students competed throughout the semester in a fictitious market for a heterogeneous good, each firm providing price and production inputs on a weekly basis. The purpose of the game was to provide a hands-on tool to teach students how industry competitors interact, and how forces such as signaling, collusion, demand fluctuations, and emotion affect industry and firm performance. Although the game was carried out successfully for several years, issues surfaced over time. In particular, the Excel model used to run the weekly calculations was set up awkwardly and was therefore difficult to use. Additionally, the memo distributed to students to explain the game was disorganized, lacked sufficient examples, and contained errors. Finally, Professor Pindyck desired to implement the game in other courses with other professors, and this was not possible without a thorough document containing instructions for running the game as well as in-depth background information on the theory behind the calculations. The work carried out for this thesis aimed to fix these problems. Specifically, I rebuilt the Excel model to operate in a simpler and more user-friendly fashion. Additionally, I revised the student memo to rectify the issues described above. Finally, I created a new manual to allow professors and TAs run the game in their courses.

Cui, Zheng. "Framework for Developing Countries’ Sound Management on Industrial Chemicals". Thesis, KTH, Industriell ekologi, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-58647.

Industrial chemicals have become an integral part of modern life, and they infiltrate into a lot of activities of human beings, such as industrial manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceutics, etc. Globalization brings opportunity and challenge to developing countries on the sound management of industrial chemicals (SMC). The issue is the contradiction between unmatched increasing import and consumption and weak legislation on SMC in developing countries. Consequently, more health and environmental impacts have been reported in developing countries because they lack capacities to generate sufficient information on chemical risks as well as appropriate methods for assessment and monitoring. Developed countries and IGOs (Intergovernmental Organizations) have made a lot of efforts on sound management of chemicals since 1960s. However, these efforts remain highly fragmented at international and national levels. As a result, a clear and well articulated strategy and concerted efforts from the international community to help developing countries is required. The aim of this thesis is, based on the studies of existing guidelines made by different IGOs on SMC, to suggest an integrated framework which can be used to collaborate with these scattered efforts together, to create synergies and avoid overlaps. This suggested framework consists of an executive mechanism which includes a panel of international organizations and general guidelines on SMC. Such a framework, looking like a voluntary intentional framework, provides possibilities to improve the capacity of developing countries’ management on industrial chemicals. To effective the framework, it needs shared responsibility of many actors to work together with same objectives to reduce adverse effects on human health and the environment. So this thesis just make a hypothesis based on the study of existing status on SMC, do the feasibility discussion and collect some feedbacks from IGOs as well.

Puikko, J. (Janne). "An exact management method for demand driven, industrial operations". Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2010. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514261879.

Abstract The framing into demand driven operations is because of the operations research modelling approach. The modelling approach requires continuous regressors and an independent response factor. The demand as an operating factor is considered as independent response factor in relation to the continuous regressors. The method validation is made along several longitudinal case studies to cover local, global and international industrial operations. The examined operational scope is from continuous operations to one-off production. Concerning scheduling, these examined demand driven, industrial operations are considered as open and dynamic, flow shop or job-shop operations. The examined managerial scope is from local work management to global industrial operations management. The theoretical framework of this study is based on operations management, productivity and controllability engineering. The strategical target is to improve productivity. The operational target setting is based on linear goal programming, streamlined demand driven material flow and specified operating factors according to this study, Forrester effect diagnostics and replenishment models. The engineering of strategical target into exact operational schedule as a task target is hard to accomplish, because of the combinatorial dynamic job-shop problem. The purpose of this study is to simplify this managerial task. These study operating factors are the heart in constructing a Decision Support System for the examined operations, alongside the method’s product flow diagnostics. This operations management method consists of the operating factors, specified in this study and these specified factors’ use in constructing a Decision Support System, by engineering current operations management system. The construct consist two parts. Firstly, the exact operational target alignment along this method diagnostics and secondly, the control mechanism according to this operational linear target. The expected managerial benefit is in productivity improvement. The practical benefits are in savings in logistics costs and improvement in customer service, due to shorten lead time and exacting delivery.
