Factors affecting risk management of indoor campus recreation facilities were studied. Campus recreation directors of 4-year colleges/universities in North America who held memberships in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) responded to a paper survey consisting of 32 dichotomous yes/no and close-ended multiple-choice questions. Questions addressed staff certification requirements, use of waivers, number of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in the facility, communication and security devices, health screening of participants, and in-person supervision of the facility. Results showed that facilities are open to participants extensively throughout the 7-day week, thus requiring directors to ensure their risk management procedures are up to date—most notably staff members' CPR and first aid certification, as well as AED training.

The range of sports and recreation facilities’ offer should be very wide in order for all social groups of the examined environment to have access to sports and recreation facilities. Therefore, Poznan City Hall should take into account all difficulties that limit the access to these facilities when preparing management policy of sports and recreation infrastructure and its functioning. That is why the main goal of this study is to recognize difficulties limiting the access to sports and recreation facilities in this city. The research carried out at indoor tennis courts (16 facilities), indoor swimming polls (12 facilities) and fitness clubs (11 facilities) in Poznan covered 1159 service recipients (using the services of a given sports and recreation facility). The author-constructed questionnaire addressed to the service recipients (residents of the city of Poznan who use the services offered at the examined sports and recreation facilities). Furthermore, the service recipients were divided into a group of people doing sports competitively and a group of recipients who have never practiced sports as professional athletes. The validated questionnaire sent to the examined service recipients included suggestions of difficulties that may limit the access to sports and recreation facilities in the city of Poznan. Further analysis of the importance of difficulties that limit the access to sports and recreation facilities may allow indicating the reason why recreational activity of residents is limited. A lower level of satisfaction and thus a lower rating of the respondents was obtained by a set of features constituting, according to the respondents, difficulties limiting the access to the use of sports and recreation facilities (high prices and too great of a distance of the sports and recreation facility from the place of residence).

Directors of campus recreation at NIRSA colleges and universities in the US and Canada were surveyed to determine: (a) the number of schools that have built, within the preceding three years, major indoor as well as major outdoor campus recreation facilities and the number of institutions planning to do so within the next three years; (b) the usage and scheduling priorities covering all campus recreation facilities; (c) the sources of funding for the construction of these major facilities and sites; and (d) the sources of funding for operational activities for campus recreation. The data were analyzed in terms of school size, location, and whether public or private in nature. The findings revealed that 56% of the institutions surveyed had either recently built new major indoor student recreation centers or were planning to do so, within the next three years. In terms of major outdoor facilities or sites, the percentage was 41%. The majority of construction funds for indoor and outdoor facilities/sites as well as operational funds for programs and activities came from future student fees at most of the public schools. Typically, private schools had the majority of their monies for both indoor and outdoor facilities emanating from private sources while the majority of operating costs was covered through the general fund of the institutions. The sharing of facilities continues with both physical education and with athletics; and, the directors of campus recreation, generally speaking, felt comfortable with such arrangements, even when such arrangements include having athletic and physical education activities take precedence in usage over those of campus recreation.

Purpose: Recreation is an intentional activity geared towards accomplishment of self and social gains including refurbishment and collective connectivity. The overall objective of this study was to examine influence of gender on recreational participation. A critical literature review Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: Music followed by singing and dancing while the least popular indoor recreational activity was aerobics and snooker/pool. The most popular outdoor recreational activity was walking while the least popular outdoor recreational activity for women was swimming and playing cards. Frequency of participation in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities by women was influenced by the age. Frequency of participation in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities was not influenced by the family size or the number of children. Frequency of participation in the indoor and outdoor recreational activities by women was not influenced by their monthly income. The family size was not a determining factor for participation in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that the county government should set aside land for developing various recreational facilities within the informal settlement areas to be accessed by all residents to mitigate time constraints; for example, construction of swimming pools since swimming is reported as the least popular outdoor activity.

Indoor ski slope is an innovative type of active indoor recreation. This new urban character is simulating the concept of mountain ski resort and is considered to be a strong attraction point all year-round. Due to a big scale and complexity, sustainable integration into an urban context should be very carefully considered. Economical, social, environmental and aesthetic impact on surrounding territories is an important factor to be evaluated. International practice shows that the appropriate integration of the above mentioned typology into urban parks increase their popularity and use of the recreation zone. On the other hand, the alien architecture and egocentric dominance of complexes can cause conflict with the existing urban territories and natural environment. Having indoor ski slopes in mind at the stages of regional and town territorial planning is an important point. Only complex development can bring positive results for sustainable town development, town economy, tourism and social life.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental attitudes toward nature and their child's outdoor recreation and how these attitudes related to their reports of their child's health problems. The sample for this study consisted of parents of 6- to 13-year-old children from the United States, who accessed the survey from an informational website for gardeners between Mar. and Aug. 2009. Surveys were collected until 142 completed questionnaires were received. The online survey included questions about parents' attitude toward nature, parents' attitudes toward their child's outdoor recreation, an inventory of potential children's health problems, the time children spent in various indoor and outdoor activities, and demographic questions. Descriptive statistics were used to tabulate mean scores on the parental attitude toward nature (PAN) scale and parental attitude toward their child's outdoor recreation (PACOR) scale, both of which indicated overall positive views. Pearson's product–moment correlations indicated statistically significant relationships between the PAN scale, the PACOR scale, and time children spent outdoors. Relationships between time spent indoors on video games or watching television and health problems in children were identified. Time spent outdoors in free play was inversely related to reports of health problems in children.

Increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior is an economic and health priority. This Green Exercise (GEx) study reports on a 40-day physical activity intervention to increase physical activity that primarily used outdoor recreation activities. Adherence, compliance, blood pressure (BP), total cholesterol, anthropometry, strength, dynamic stability, and cardiovascular fitness were assessed 1 week prior and immediately following the 40-day intervention. The results then were compared with a larger study that used the same methodologies but for the exception of primarily indoor physical activities. Results from this study showed similar improvements in health measures to the comparative indoor-based physical activity program with increased adherence and compliance. Improvements in wellbeing were also noted. This GEx study suggests that exercise programs that seek to increase physical activity levels of insufficiently active adults may benefit from including outdoor recreation activities within the program and may also increase participant mental health and general well-being.

Human activities varied and some of them are classified as sports. Sports are activities or experiences that give enjoyment or recreation; pastime; diversion such an activity, when competitive, requiring more or less vigorous bodily exertion and carried on, sometimes as a profession, according to some traditional form or set off rules, whether outdoors or indoors. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on sustainable design strategies for indoor sports halls, with a particular emphasis on reducing energy consumption and costs. Day lighting reduces energy consumption, improves visual comfort, and creates a sense of well- being for users. The people in Awka, are interested in sports, but currently lack a modern indoor swimming hall to address their swimming interest. The primary aim of this research is to create awareness and bring to the attention of the Anambra State urban players that Awka, has no known indoor swimming facility especially, within the Nnamdi Azikiwe University with a huge students’ population. The research adopted qualitative and descriptive research methods dealing with data from both primary and secondary sources. With the introduction of an indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the population of the school will increase as it will attract students interested in swimming that is lacking in most southeast schools and cities. This research recommends the introduction of an indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and if not for any other thing, to help the university in, increasing their student’s population, create jobs for the students, attract revenue to the university and encourage inter university competitions.

Taiwan’s cities exhibit high levels of urbanization, which has resulted in limited recreation space in urban areas. In response, government policies have been enacted to promote the large-scale greening of rivers in urban areas and the establishment of aquatic recreation areas that do not interfere with water flow areas, pavilions for recreation purposes, indoor stadiums, and biking lanes alongside riverbanks to provide citizens with recreation space. An expert team was convened to investigate 50 riverside recreation sites, and the Comfortable Water Environment Rest Assessment Form was devised. The investigation results revealed three factors that contribute to the value of riverside recreation sites; the three factors had a total explanatory power of 70.17%. The factors, namely exercising and leisure, overall design plan and entrance image, and environmental maintenance and service, had an explanatory power of 25.52%, 23.32%, and 21.32%, respectively. Finally, this study provides guidance for constructing service systems for riverside recreation sites by referencing practical cases. This study suggests that future designs focus on the characteristics of visitors as the main consideration when investing resources in recreation sites. In addition, more exercise and recreation equipment and facilities should be provided at recreation sites located within highly populated areas. For recreation sites that feature beautiful scenery, greater degrees of overall design planning and entrance image qualities can be integrated into the recreation sites, and environmental teaching materials can be incorporated into the environment. Furthermore, this study suggests that residents who live near recreation sites form and operate volunteer groups to contribute to environmental maintenance and the relevant services; this would greatly enhance the overall experience of comfort of visitors to the recreation sites. Finally, this study provides guidance for low-intensity construction in high riverbank areas.

COVID-19 global pandemic has caused massive disruption of travel behaviors along with other aspects of human life, such as social distancing, staying at home, and avoiding crowds. People substituted outdoor activities for indoor activities, and the forest environment has become a popular alternative. Taiwan has a high population density, but it had few COVID-19 confirmed cases in 2020 during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. No forest areas have been closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In light of this generally increased demand for suburban forests for recreational uses, the current COVID-19 pandemic situation poses specific challenges regarding forest use, management, and policy. This study integrates visitation numbers of the popular forest recreation area and selects the unblocking index and social distancing index as the COVID-19 index to capture the impacts of forest recreation area on the COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan. The results show both COVID-19 indices have high explanatory power for suburban forest visitation and both have a significant impact on the number of visitors. Although the number of visitors to suburban forests decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic alert, it bounced when the COVID-19 outbreak was under control. This study provides a brief overview of management implications for recreational visits during COVID-19. We posed an early warning to forest managers for greater revenge traveling post-COVID-19.

Ambient and indoor air pollution have high impact on public health. Safety of indoor air is crucial for well-being and stress tolerance of seafarers due to their prolonged stay in the environment characterized by adjacency of work and leisure premises. Flaws in ventilation and air distribution systems may lead to infiltration and accumulation of pollutants in air of living and recreation premises. However, available onboard HVAC systems designs are not fit to ensure cleanliness and quality of the indoor air of ships accommodation. In this study a new approach for indoor air quality management on board merchant ships is proposed. Air quality standards and requirements analyzed and formal representation formulated. Approximation techniques for thermal comfort index PMV reviewed and computationally efficient polynomial representation proposed. Unified dynamic model of microclimate, thermal comfort and gas composition of air is developed. Model performance was studied in simulation environment with superstructure microclimate model of a real ship. As a proof of the hypothesis a preliminary prototype developed and tested on board of gas carrier vessel. A proposed control optimization problem statement allows implementation of a wide range of indoor air quality and comfort management systems at scale. Prototype multiparameter controller based on microprocessor technology showed potential of performance improvement and scalability for development of distributed control systems.

From 1870 to the present, the city of New York has built and maintained municipal bathing places including river baths, indoor bathhouses, indoor pools, and outdoor pools, designed around competing motivations of hygiene, recreation, and play. In this paper, I consider what it means for different groups to play in public space using Caillois's (1961) division of ludus—competitive, rule-bound play, and paidia—exuberant, unstructured play. First, using historical examples, I show how these notions of play were expressed in two shifts in the construction of municipal swimming and bathing infrastructure in New York City. In 1870, the enclosure of formerly unstructured bathing spaces at the riverbanks, and the establishment of floating baths in the rivers was meant to structure both time and behavior in the water; in 1936, the construction of 11 enormous swimming pools under Parks Commissioner Robert Moses provided bathing spaces, with recreation at the center of their design program and social function. Second, I offer contemporary ethnographic data from two outdoor pools in Brooklyn to demonstrate how rules around acceptable play are differentially enforced inside of the same institution. Through these historical shifts and contemporary variations, I demonstrate how both the construction and everyday use of municipal bathing infrastructure has been the site of an ongoing tension between ludus and paidia, inflected with urban problematics of class and race.

During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, opportunities for indoor and sometimes outdoor recreation were restricted across the world. Despite restrictions, many greenways and rail-trails saw increased use. Messaging from the federal and state public health authorities stressed the importance of social distancing and other preventive measures in reducing spread of the coronavirus. Little is known about actual behaviors of individuals and groups using these outdoor recreational opportunities. This study used passive infrared cameras to systematically observe physical distancing behaviors on multi-user trails to assess safety implications of trail use during June 2020. Most interactions occurred with the recommended six feet of distance between users. Maintaining six feet of distance is more likely to occur when groups are no larger than one person, users pass while traveling in opposite directions, and trails are wider. Messaging on multi-user trails should target how groups pass other groups such as: ‘keep six feet’ and ‘pass single file’.

Study Objective: This study aims to empirically analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on changes in international second residence tourists' perspective on recreational activities and their recreational experiences.Methodology/approach: An empirical qualitative perspective was adopted in the study. Online surveys were sent to a total of 500 international second residence tourists in Alanya/Turkey. Analyzes were made on the 430 response data returned.Orginality/value: Recreational areas are extremely important in the destination selection of international second home tourists’. There is a gap in studies focusing on changes in their recreational experiences during the pandemic. For the sustainability of the demand for second homes in the destination, it is necessary to follow the changes experienced during the pandemic process and to make provision for negativities. The study compares the purposes of participating in recreational activities of international second home tourists before the pandemic and during the pandemic period. It also comparatively analyzes the level of participation in indoor, outdoor and virtual recreational activities before the pandemic and during the pandemic period.Main results: Study results confirmed that the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the recreational activities in which second residence tourists participated. While the pandemic has reduced the interest in indoor activities, it has also increased the interest in outdoor and virtual activities significantly. Theoretical/methodological contributions: The pandemic process has not yet been fully clarified. Thus, the black swan theory remains valid for the Pandemic Process. The results of this study provide an understanding of the effects of COVID-19 specific to the experiences of international second residence tourists. The results of this study will guide the ongoing studies on second homes. Social/management contributions: In the new normal process, the demand for recreation areas has increased. Thus, carrying capacity problems arose. As a result, the destination satisfaction of international second home tourists may decrease and may decide to leave the destination. Locals who cannot use recreational areas may feel displaced. It must be taken into account that the pandemic has brought xenophobia to the agenda. Local governments should definitely make a new plan for the use of recreational areas in order to prevent possible conflicts between international second home tourists and local people.

The tradition of school sports facilities has its roots in ancient civilizations, primarily in ancient Greece. The preserved ruins of gymnasiums at Delphi, Olympia, Millet, Priene, Dedina, Pergamon, Ephesus or Thermessos, document well that sports facilities were a major part of the education system. They served not only for students and sports training but were opened to the public, used for social gatherings, political meetings and disputes. Contemporary school sports facilities derived from the 19th-century concept of the school’s educational program. It also included the indoor and outdoor physical education classes and facilities used for ‘body-building exercises’ - as it was named. In Poland, according to the current basic curriculum of the Ministry of National Education, the goal of physical education is to shape the long life habit of physical activity. The school activities should develop the appropriate interests and attitudes of students. Therefore, school activities should meet the needs, interests and abilities of the individual student as fully as possible. The present regulations of the Ministry of Education demand, that such classes should take place in a well-equipped sports hall or on a school playground.

Forest recreation can be successfully conducted for the purpose of psychological relaxation, as has been proven in previous scientific studies. During the winter in many countries, when snow cover occurs frequently, forest recreation (walking, relaxation, photography, etc.) is common. Nevertheless, whether forest therapy conducted in a forest environment with a snow cover will also have a positive effect on psychological indicators remains unknown. Furthermore, male subjects frequently participate in forest therapy experiments, whereas females are rarely involved. Thus, in this study, the effectuality of forest recreation during winter and with snow cover was tested on 32 young females. For these reasons, the experiment involved 15 min periods of relaxation in a forest environment or in an urban street environment, in addition to a pre-test under indoor conditions (randomized controlled study). Four psychological questionnaires Profile of Mood States (POMS), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Restorative Outcome Scale (ROS), Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS)) were administered to participants before and after interventions. Results showed that participants’ levels of negative mood, as measured by different aspects of the POMS questionnaire (tension/anxiety, anger/hostility, depression/dejection, confusion, and fatigue), decreased after exposure to the forest environment. In contrast, both tension/anxiety and anger/hostility increased in the urban street environment. The indicator of negative affect from the PANAS questionnaire also increased after exposure to the urban street environment, whereas the indicator of positive affect based on PANAS was higher in the forest environment than in the urban street environment. Restorativeness and subjective vitality exhibited higher values after exposure to the forest environment in comparison to those from the control and pre-test. The changes in these indicators demonstrate that forest recreation in the snow during winter can significantly increase psychological relaxation in females, as well as show that recreation can be successfully conducted under these winter conditions.

Mini-drones can be used for a variety of tasks, ranging from weather monitoring to package delivery, search and rescue, and also recreation. In outdoor scenarios, they leverage Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and/or similar systems for localization in order to preserve safety and performance. In indoor scenarios, technologies such as Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (V-SLAM) are used instead. However, more advancements are still required for mini-drone navigation applications, especially in the case of stricter safety requirements. In this research, a novel method for enhancing indoor mini-drone localization performance is proposed. By merging Oriented Rotated Brief SLAM (ORB-SLAM2) and Semi-Direct Monocular Visual Odometry (SVO) via an Adaptive Complementary Filter (ACF), the proposed strategy achieves better position estimates under various conditions (low light in low-surface-texture environments and high flying speed), showing an average percentage error of 18.1% and 25.9% smaller than that of ORB-SLAM and SVO against the ground-truth.

The objectives of this study are to explore the site suitability for the Rangsit City Health and Recreation Center, to analyze the potentials and the limitations of the locations in identifying an appropriate site, and then finalizing a conceptual design for the Rangsit City Health and Recreation Center’s Public Space in Pathum Thani province. The study methodology included a review of the literature to establish criteria for analyzing the location and developing the proposal of the concept design and a cadastral survey of two potential sites,in accordance with the policy of Rangsit City Municipality. The first site area was located in Soi Rangsit Nakhon Nayok 45, and the second was located in Soi Rangsit Nakhon Nayok 39. In analyzing the suitability of the two sites, the study considered location and accessibility, as well as environmental factors conducive to convenience and safety, wellbeing, recreation, and awareness. In comparing the two areas, the analysis showed a strong potential for Soi Rangsit Nakhon Nayok 39. to be a health and recreation center, as it met criteria regarding context of location, access, and linkage. The site can be accessed from several ways as well as easily connected to other public areas in the neighborhood. The surrounding area is open, well drained, and the rectangular area makes it easy to design and maintain safety. In terms of concept design, three main concepts were emphasized: Connect, Cool, and Clear. Connect focused on creating spaces with easy connection for either indoor or outdoor activities. Cool required the design to fit with local climate as a means of creating a comfortable state of mind. Lastly, Clear highlighted open spaces and uses shapes and lines which are easy to understand based on a concept of universal design, to facilitate access for people of all groups and ages.

Background and objective: This study was conducted to analyze users’ behavior, recognition, and satisfaction toward forest trails and exercise facilities in urban mountainous forests, Jinju City, South Korea. Methods: Users’ characteristics, visit motives, and satisfaction with forest trails and exercise facilities in three urban mountainous forests were surveyed from September to October 2020. The data of 300 respondents were analyzed using frequency, descriptive, and regression analysis. Results: There was a high percentage of users aged 51 or older (62.0%). Most users visited regardless of weekdays or weekends, every day or 2-3 times a week, and stayed for 1-2 hours. Most were using the forest trails and outdoor fitness facilities. Hiking or walking showed the highest frequency in visit motives, followed by using outdoor fitness facilities. Overall satisfaction with forest trails was high at 3.74-3.93 on a 5-point Likert scale, which was affected by the landscape and environment of small private arable lands around forest trails and convenient facilities such as handrails and information boards. Overall satisfaction with outdoor fitness facilities was 3.34-3.62, which was affected by harmony with forest landscape and facility maintenance. Overall satisfaction with indoor badminton courts was 3.01-3.08, which was affected by harmony with forest landscape. Conclusion: For improving overall satisfaction, it is crucial to maintain and repair the width and surface of forest trails, but renovating the landscape and environment of small private arable lands and exercise facilities may be more critical. It is desirable to improve and maintain the function and landscape of outdoor fitness facilities and to relocate indoor badminton courts to the outskirts or boundaries of the mountainous forests. To provide various leisure and recreation activities, the creation of a forest bathing place will be first necessary, followed by a family recreation place and outdoor learning classroom.

The transcutaneous stimulation of lower limb muscles during indoor rowing (FES Rowing) has led to a new sport and recreation and significantly increased health benefits in paraplegia. Stimulation is often delivered to quadriceps and hamstrings; this muscle selection seems based on intuition and not biomechanics and is likely suboptimal. Here, we sample surface EMGs from 20 elite rowers to assess which, when, and how muscles are activated during indoor rowing. From EMG amplitude we specifically quantified the onset of activation and silencing, the duration of activity and how similarly soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, tibialis anterior, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and medialis, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris muscles were activated between limbs. Current results revealed that the eight muscles tested were recruited during rowing, at different instants and for different durations. Rectus and biceps femoris were respectively active for the longest and briefest periods. Tibialis anterior was the only muscle recruited within the recovery phase. No side differences in the timing of muscle activity were observed. Regression analysis further revealed similar, bilateral modulation of activity. The relevance of these results in determining which muscles to target during FES Rowing is discussed. Here, we suggest a new strategy based on the stimulation of vasti and soleus during drive and of tibialis anterior during recovery.

A form of natural architecture built with environmentally friendly materials, earth construction provides indoor protection from outside temperature conditions. In Thailand, adobe brick that contains rice husk is the most widely used material in earth construction. It is important to consider the strength and moisture absorption capacity of adobe brick. This research focuses on the feasibility of using agricultural by-products such as rice husk and bagasse in adobe brick mixtures with a percentage replacement of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 6% by weight of materials. The study explores the level at which replacing rice husk and bagasse in adobe brick effects optimal compressive strength, shrinkage, thermal conductivity, and moisture absorption. The results provide a guideline for producing adobe brick containing agricultural by-products with improved strength and lower moisture absorption. Adobe brick with performance improved in these ways will be beneficial for developing low-cost architecture for local people and for building hotels and recreation facilities for the tourism industry.

The rapid increase in elderly population has increased demand on care services and care and attention homes in Hong Kong. Elderly residents in care and attention homes rely heavily on facilities to maintain their quality of life. However, many care and attention homes are not purpose-built for elderly people. This paper investigates the relationship between facilities management of care and attention homes and elderly quality of life using both quantitative and qualitative data. A questionnaire was distributed among elders of eight recruited care and attention homes with four categories (government-financed non-purpose-built, government-financed purpose-built, self-financed non-purpose-built and self-financed purpose-built) in Hong Kong. Selected care and attention homes were a good mixture of operating types, building age and building types. A total of 56 questionnaires were completed by both elderly residents and staff in care and attention homes (37.5% were male and 62.5% were female), followed by semi-structured interviews; 48.2% of respondents were over 80 years of age and 93% had lived in C&A homes for more than one year. The findings identified 19 indoor facilities factors and also measured elderly quality of life. The results showed that space identification, distance, ventilation, furniture, non-slip floors and recreation facilities were positively related to elderly quality of life. Based on these findings, several practical recommendations are proposed, including allocating larger spaces for bedrooms, designing ventilation, installation of non-slip flooring, family-like furniture and the arrangement of recreational facilities.

A stay-at-home order caused people to increase the amount of time spent at home by 12 percentage points and decrease the time the spent at work by 30 percentage points, retail and recreation venues by 40 percentage points, and grocery stores and pharmacies by 10 percentage points. People did not sustain changes in mobility and gradually returned to prepandemic levels before the stay-at-home order was lifted. In areas where people spent the most time at indoor locations, there was a large increase in COVID-19. Conclusions. A more robust and stricter policy response coordinated at the national level combined with a strong economic response from policymakers could have increased the effectiveness of the stay-at-home order.

Physical activity is essential for children’s healthy development, yet COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions such as school closures and staying at home, playground closures, and the cancelling of organised community sport have dramatically altered children’s opportunities to be physically active. This study describes changes in levels of physical activity and screen time from February 2020 (i.e., before COVID-19 restrictions were introduced in Western Australia) to May 2020 (i.e., when COVID-19 restrictions were in place). Parents of children aged 5 to 9 years from Western Australia were eligible to participate and recruited through convenience sampling. An online survey instrument that included validated measures of their children’s physical activity (unstructured, organized, home-based, indoor/outdoor active play, dog play/walking), sociodemographic, and other potential confounders was administered to parents. Paired t-tests and mixed ANOVA models assessed changes in physical activity outcomes. The analytic sample comprised parents of 157 children who were 6.9 years of age (SD = 1.7) on average. Overall, weekly minutes of total physical activity (PA) did not change from before to during COVID-19. However, frequency and duration (total and home-based) of unstructured physical activity significantly increased. Outdoor play in the yard or street around the house, outdoor play in the park or playground or outdoor recreation area, and active indoor play at home all significantly increased. Frequency and total duration of organised physical activity significantly declined during COVID-19 distancing. During Western Australian COVID-19 restrictions, there was an increase in young children’s unstructured physical activity and outdoor play and a decrease in organised physical activity. It remains to be seen whether children’s increased physical activity has been sustained with the easing of physical distancing restrictions.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the association between the practice of different types of physical activity (PA) with perceived environmental factors in boys and girls adolescents. Were evaluated 1,130 adolescents from Porto Alegre, Brazil. To evaluate different PA, students answered whether or not they practiced walking, running, team sports, and others general PA. Perceived environmental factors were assessed through Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale for Youth (NEWS-Y). Analyses were performed using logistic regression. Adolescents who reported perceiving a distance up to 20 minutes to walking/running track, had their chances of practicing all types of PA increased in the total sample and for girls. For walking, it was also found an association with access in adolescents. For girls, it was found an association between shortest distance to indoor recreation or exercise facility and other playing fields/court with running and team sports. Aesthetics and road safety were associated with team sports in adolescents. Other general PA were associated with park, bike/hiking/walking trails in the total sample and for girls. Therefore, for each type of PA, specific associations of perceived environmental factors were found.

The restrictions introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic affected the regular routines of Canadians, including access to play and physical activity opportunities, while limiting social connections. In response to this, a recreation centre created take-home play kits that contained loose parts with the aim of facilitating unstructured play. Between August 2021 and January 2022, ten parents participated in semi-structured interviews via telephone or videoconferencing platforms that captured their experiences of the take-home play kits. Using Thematic Analysis, we identified themes and subthemes reflecting parent perceptions and experiences of the take-home play kit. Three themes emerged: (1 A forced renaissance of play; (2) Bringing unstructured play home, and; (3) Parenting is child’s play. Parents shared how the pandemic resulted in decreased physical activity and social opportunities for their children. The parents described how the take-home play kits supported unstructured play as well as their perspectives on the importance of unstructured play. Parents in our study suggested that a take-home loose parts play kit could be a useful resource to help engage children in unstructured play in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Ski tourism is a common form of tourism worldwide, generally associated with rural areas and activities in the snow. However, it is also offered as a tourist product in urban destinations in indoor and outdoor areas associated with sports. The conducted research considered the main features of ski tourism development on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, a country with a flat terrain character. The landscape-climatic and socio-economic conditions in eight ski tourism centers of the country are analyzed, and their specialization in the presentation of tourist products and the development of basic and specialized infrastructure are discussed. It is noted that the development of ski centers is associated with the popularization of active recreation, and amateur skiing. In the research, it has been determined that it is much more appropriate to examine ski tourism separately in mountainous and flat areas without making comparisons in terms of both landscape and orographic conditions. When the research findings are evaluated in general, it shows that the ski tourism in the Belarus destination is unevenly distributed and the highest density is in the influence area of the capital Minsk.

This paper deals with one particular purpose for public space, the role it plays in permitting popular public participation in in democratic governance, democratic governance in a very political sense. For the United States, it might be called “First Amendment Space”, after the provision in the U.S.A. Constituting establishing the rights of free speech and free assembly. In a broader sense, public space should also be available democratically and based on equality of rights for a full range of social interchanges, for recreation, sports, picnicking, hiking, running, sitting, chatting, simply enjoyment, by all people, equally. Such uses, carried out democratically, are in turn necessary for democratic governance, but in a different way. Let me call them “Social Spaces”. And they may be divided between Convening spaces, where convening for the purposes of political effectiveness may be planned, and Encounter Spaces, where chance meetings and discussion may be take place without prior planning/convening. “Infrastructural Spaces” are also social spaces but in a different sense, not directly political: spaces for transportation, streets, sidewalks, recreational areas, parks, hiking trails, bicycles partially. he term “Third Space” is sometimes in fashion in a similar sense, and often defined as somewhere between public and private1. More on social spaces elsewhere. When public space is referred to here, it is in the sense of political public space, First Amendment space in the United States. Tahrir Square in Cairo, the Playa of Mothers in Buenos Aires, the Mall in Washington, D.C., Zuccotti Park in New York City, perhaps Central Park or Fifth Avenue, with its parades and marches, but also the fenced in space under the West Side highway at the time of the Republican Convention, and perhaps the indoor space of the Convention Center, as used for convening for discussions of alternate proposals for rebuilding after 9/11.

The objective of the paper is to investigate the main areas of activity and conditions of functioning of Bukovyna's fitness clubs. To solve the objective of the research, the following research methods were used: theoretical analysis of scientific and methodological literature and normative documents, content analysis, synthesis and generalization. Research findings. The paper analyzes the market of sports and health activities in Bukovyna for IDPs. A detailed description of fitness clubs in the region is defined. Territorial, functional, structural and technical aspects of fitness clubs' activity of Chernivtsi and the region in attracting IDPs are described. The main sections of the content of the activity of fitness clubs during the period of martial law have been determined. Types of fitness classes cultivated by clubs are revealed. The key reasons that prevent the effective operation of sports facilities are highlighted. Conclusion. The development of the fitness industry is an important component in the implementation of state policy in the field of physical culture and sports during martial law. To date, the accessibility of fitness clubs is quite important as a factor in attracting citizens, in particular IDPs, to systematic exercise classes. Thus, the fitness industry has been developing rapidly in Bukovyna over the past decade. By the nature of the use of physical culture and sports clubs, the most numerous are educational and sports (18.4%), special purpose (15.8%) and fitness clubs (65.8%). During the study, it was determined that Bukovyna fitness clubs are year-round in operation, all clubs are indoor, operate in complex buildings (92.1%), are complex in specialization (94.7%) and are technically upgraded (73.7%). The analysis of the aforementioned data allows us to conclude that recreational and health services have great potential for the social development of Bukovyna and the involvement of IDPs in certain types of physical recreation. This stipulates the need for their careful study and scientific justification.
