Article discussed how native speakers of Indonesian observed Grice’s maxims. One hundred conversations contributed in live talk show from varied Indonesia television channels were analysed. The results show that Grice’s maxims are fulfilled in many conversations. Nevertheless, in other situations, two kinds of non-fulfilment of the maxims are observed. First, the speaker deliberately exploits a maxim, which is suitable to Grice’s theory. Second, the speaker fails to observe but does not exploit a maxim, which leads to some interpretations of the cultural patterns of the Indonesian language: communicative politeness, high context culture and the needs of harmony in communication that are considered as the manifesting of Indonesian culture.

In a stand up comedy, the Stand-up comedian or also known as comic have to tell about their restlessness to the audience in a funny way. In order to make the audience laugh, they surely need to make the audience understand the topic being discussed. Concerning to the success of a communication, Paul Grice (19890 proposed four cooperative principles that people expected to follow; maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner (Yule, 1996). However, Attardo claims that disobeying maxims is common in a research of humor (Attardo, 1990). Thus, this study is purposed to compare the flout of maxims done by an Indonesian comic and an American comic, its joke techniques which they employ while flouting maxims to create humorous materials and the reason why they flout certain maxim the most and use certain joke techniques. This study uses descriptive qualitative method to observe the result of flouting maxims in Stand up comedy. The result finding of this study will be in a form of descriptive text. The participants of this study are an Indonesian comic named Abdur Arsyad and an American comic named Kevin Hart. The result of this study finds that the maxims each comics flout the most are different which is influenced by the difference of their nationalities and cultures. Kevin flouts maxim of quantity the most because of the influence of American culture which tend to be direct in communication. Meanwhile, Abdur flouts maxim of quality the most because of the influence of Indonesian culture which tend to be indirect in communication. Even though the maxim they flout the most are different, their flout of maxims are similarly employed all types of joke techniques which contributed to create humor. Their flouts of maxims have employed paralanguage, ridicule, satire, and politeness strategy of joke techniques. The similarity of the joke techniques employed by both comics is influenced by their ethnic background. Abdur Arsyad and Kevin Hart have different nationalities, however they have the same ethnic background. Abdur comes from East side of Indonesia, and Kevin is African-American which both are minority in their countries. Therefore, they employ the same joke telling technique to deliver the jokes. It can also be influenced by their joke materials which are similar. Both of them usually bring up the topic of the restlessness of being minority and about social criticism.

All sharia economic court decisions in Indonesia are supposed to include sharia principles as the basis for adjudicating the case. Therefore, the judges must be able to understand the legal norms of sharia economics. This study aimed to explore how fundamentalistic maxims (al-qawāʿid al-uṣūliyyah) and jurisprudential maxims (al-qawāʿid al-fiqhiyyah) as parts of sharia economic legal norms or sharia principles were used by judges as legal argumentation in court decisions. We analyzed 384 court decisions categorized as sharia economic cases on the Indonesian Supreme Court website from April 20, 2016, to April 20, 2020, and set them as a universe of cases. Each decision that contained the maxim (qāʿidah) in its legal consideration was selected as relevant case sample and was then analyzed to find how the maxim was used as legal argumentation to respond to a petition and/or demurrer. Then, we found 15 legal maxims from 28 legal argumentations of 14 decisions (3.65% of the universe of cases). In general, the use of those maxims as legal argumentation has already conformed to their conventional usage with a few notes related to specific legal findings (rechtsvinding) in sharia economic cases.

Sentential implicature is something meant or implied that is proposed to avoid impoliteness in making harmonious conversation. For the sake of politeness it was postulated cooperative politeness and maxims; tact maxim, approbation maxim, generosity maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim. The measurement of politeness or impoliteness is also determined by the four factors; power, range, distance and familiarity. In “Laskar Pelangi” the movie, it was found some maxims with Indonesian cultural background for its politeness. Politeness was shown by addressing someone just by name or by saying “Mr.” and “Mrs”, according to the power and relationship, minimizing dispraise of others, and mentioning something or someone indirectly.

This research is qualitative descriptive research with a content analysis approach. Based on the results of the analysis that has been carried out on five vlogs (video blogs) carried out with predetermined indicators, violations of the politeness principle were found in the maxims of tact, the maxim of acceptance, the maxim of generosity, the maxim of humility, the maxim of compatibility, and the maxim of sympathy. Violating the principle of decency, as shown in the form of the maxims above, can affect the mindset of the millennial generation as the leading connoisseurs of the existence of these vlogs. Patterns of thought will correlate with the way of acting and interacting in social life. Thus, watching vlogs by Indonesian YouTubers can be worth watching if they have a small (minimal) number of violations and not worth watching if the number of violations contained in them is significant.

The increasing, often controversial, roles of the Indonesian Ulama Council or Majlis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) in society have attracted scholars to study the institution, including its fatwas and their arguments. This study examines how legal maxims (qawa'd fiqhiyyah) had been used to construct the arguments of MUI's fatwas. This study also identifies the legal maxims used, observes their frequencies, and determines the patterns of their application. Legal maxims are important since they show principles and logic to discover legal norms. Some 118 fatwas on ritual, Shariaheconomic, and socio-cultural issues are examined. This study found that 25 legal maxims had been used by the MUI's fatwas, with five being most frequently referred to. On average, each fatwa referred to 1.23 legal maxims. Fatwas on economic issues used most legal maxims with an average of 2.14, while those on socio-cultural and ritual issues used only 0.66 and 0.47 legal maxims on average, respectively. Fatwas on economic issues seemed to be the most dynamic ones.

This study investigated the pragmatic aspects of verbal attacks within Indonesian courtrooms, specifically examining speech acts and their alignment with Grice's maxims. While previous research has explored verbal attacks in legal contexts, this study is expected to fill a gap in the literature by focusing on the pragmatic analysis of speech acts and Grice's maxims in Indonesian settings. Using a qualitative research approach and court transcripts, the speech acts contained in this research were systematically analyzed and categorized based on the type and illocutionary force while scrutinizing their adherence to Grice's maxims. The findings reveal a diverse range of speech acts deployed during verbal attacks, including assertive challenges and veiled accusations, often involving deliberate violations of Grice's maxims. Participants strategically flout maxims, utilizing implicatures to contribute to the confrontational nature of verbal attacks. This study is also expected to advance our understanding of the pragmatic dimensions of verbal attacks in Indonesian courtrooms and to describe the strategic use of language in the legal context. It has the potential to inform legal practice, enhancing comprehension of courtroom communication and promoting more effective and respectful exchanges within the Indonesian legal system.

Humor could be created by violation of maxim of the cooperative principle as proposed by Grice. In Kariage Kun, a well-known Japanese humor comic, it is challenging to analyze what maxim violation is explored to create humor, as it represents a co-interplay between a series of images and text. This study aimed to analyze the pattern of maxim violation in source text from Kariage Kun vol 49 (from word level to sentence level) and to compare whether the pattern of maxim violation is similar or shifting in the Indonesian version. The result of this study shows that the author of the comic explored the violation of maxims to create humor. The violation took place on a single or combination of the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. Compared to the target text, there are not many (less than ten percent) shifting of the pattern of maxim violation in the target text. The shifting mostly occurred when the violation dealt with the ambiguity of typical cultural load in the source text, preservation of acceptability and readability for target readers in terms of translation technique, and limited space of speech balloon.

Politeness is basically the speaker's way of communicating so that the speech partner does not feel pressured, cornered, or offended. Communication is a process that occurs in social life. At this time, almost all Indonesian people use social media and the biggest user is YouTube social media. Youtube is a social media that is watched by all people and all ages. Youtube contains various types of content, one of which is Boy William's YouTube channel entitled Boy William's National Examination (UNBW). This series discusses Youtube content for Boy William's National Examination (UNBW) with actresses Ayu Ting-Ting and Anwar. Politeness in language on Youtube social media functions to fence off Youtube users as polite loudspeakers. Conversations during UNBW will be the object of language politeness analysis with a review based on Leech's theory. The politeness theory put forward by Leech (1983: 132) is known as maxims which describe the realization of linguistic politeness, and further elaborates the linguistic politeness strategy into 6 maxims namely: 1) tact maxim, 2) generosity maxim , 3) approbation maxim, 4) modesty maxim, 5) agreement maxim, and 6) sympathy maxim. After reviewing the data, I pointed out that the conversation on UNBW's Youtube content for the Ayu vs Anwar series contains language that is impolite for other people to watch but is still considered polite if this conversation is only for Boy William, Ayu Ting-Ting, and just Anwar.

This study aims to examine the comments on Instagram posts made by the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) through forensic linguistic analysis employing lexical semantics, speech act theory by Searle (1979), and the violation of politeness maxims according to Leech (2014). The research also focuses on identifying legal violations within these comments. The research methodology utilized is qualitative, employing a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through documentation by capturing all comments posted on the DPR RI's Instagram post on July 20, 2023, via screenshots. Data analysis was carried out qualitatively, primarily employing content analysis. Analytical steps included data organization, lexical-semantic analysis, identification and classification of speech acts and violations of politeness maxims, interpretation, and legal violation tracking. The research data comprised five hate comments on the DPR RI's Instagram post concerning the passing away news of its members on July 20, 2023. The analysis revealed that these comments contained negative and derogatory by using language that tarnished reputations and made unsubstantiated accusations. Some comments also violated politeness maxims, particularly the maxims of sympathy and praise. These actions potentially violate Article 310 (2) of the Indonesian Penal Code (KUHP) regarding defamation, Article 315 of the KUHP regarding minor insults, and Article 27 (3) of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) regarding defamation through electronic media.

Grice’s conversational implicatures have aroused far more attention in advertisements. The basic idea is that language-activity, most typically, is a kind of irrational (and purposive) social interaction governed by the principle of co-operation. It describes the violence of maxims in XL advertisements as one of Indonesian cellular phone providers. The aim of the research is to investigate the maxim mostly violated in XL advertisements and the evidences of those violations issued by Excelcomindo. The findings of the research show that the maxim mostly violated by XL cell phone provider. Moreover, the evidence of those violations is the use of uninformative and obscure utterances. It occurs because the cellular phones’ copywriters use indirect comparison. It means, in comparing their products with competitors, they do not directly mention the competitors’ product but they only use implicit utterances to refer to competitors’ products.Key words: Advertisements, principle co-operation, violations

This study aims to examine the use of conversational implicatures(Grice, 1975) in print advertising. It analyses 10 advertisements taken from men and women English and Indonesian Magazines issued in 2016 and 2017. Since advertising is a form of communication between the few (advertisers or company) and the many (public), adverts are supposed to follow the Cooperative Principle and its maxims. However, advertisement designers often do not obey the maxims blatantly or flout the maxims which give rise to an implicature in order to achieve a certain communicative effect. I argue that the application of conversational implicatures in advertisements tends to provide enormous benefits for advertisers or company. The application can perform various functions which eventually make the adverts more effective and persuasive. It could make the adverts more economical or cost-effective, make the ad easy to be remembered, arouse the audience’s curiosity, attract and retain attention and make the advertisers able to avoid responsibility to defend the implied claims. Keywords: Conversational implicature, advertising, cooperative principle, flouting maxims
