Harnessing solar energy to produce hydrogen through semiconductor-mediated photocatalytic water splitting is a promising avenue to address the challenges of energy scarcity and environmental degradation. Ever since Fujishima and Honda’s groundbreaking work in photocatalytic water splitting, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has garnered significant interest as a semiconductor photocatalyst, prized for its non-toxicity, affordability, superior photocatalytic activity, and robust chemical stability. Nonetheless, the efficacy of solar energy conversion is hampered by TiO2’s wide bandgap and the swift recombination of photogenerated carriers. In pursuit of enhancing TiO2’s photocatalytic prowess, a panoply of modification techniques has been explored over recent years. This work provides an extensive review of the strategies employed to augment TiO2’s performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production, with a special emphasis on foreign dopant incorporation. Firstly, we delve into metal doping as a key tactic to boost TiO2’s capacity for efficient hydrogen generation via water splitting. We elaborate on the premise that metal doping introduces discrete energy states within TiO2’s bandgap, thereby elevating its visible light photocatalytic activity. Following that, we evaluate the role of metal nanoparticles in modifying TiO2, hailed as one of the most effective strategies. Metal nanoparticles, serving as both photosensitizers and co-catalysts, display a pronounced affinity for visible light absorption and enhance the segregation and conveyance of photogenerated charge carriers, leading to remarkable photocatalytic outcomes. Furthermore, we consolidate perspectives on the nonmetal doping of TiO2, which tailors the material to harness visible light more efficiently and bolsters the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The incorporation of various anions is summarized for their potential to propel TiO2’s photocatalytic capabilities. This review aspires to compile contemporary insights on ion-doped TiO2, propelling the efficacy of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and anticipating forthcoming advancements. Our work aims to furnish an informative scaffold for crafting advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts tailored for water-splitting applications.

Based on the physicochemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and the need of having an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect at the same time in a material for wound healing applications, a multicomponent polymer system was synthesized. Zn-based MOFs having different amino acids acting as ligands (L-tryptophan (Trp), L-phenylalanine (Phe), and L-histidine (His)) in their coordination sphere were successfully prepared and validated by FTIR and XRD. Each MOF was incorporate d into a semi-interpenetrated polymeric network (semi-IPN) based on collagen (C)-guar gum (GG)-polyurethane (PU), given composite hydrogels as end products. The physicochemical properties of these novel composite hydrogels, their in vitro biocompatibility, and their use as cell carriers were studied. The maximum swelling capacity was shown by CGG-Zn(Trp) while the crosslinking index was higher for CGG-Zn(Phe) and CGG-Zn(His), indicating that the chemical structure of the amino acid of the Zn-based MOF tailors these physicochemical properties. All composite hydrogels were resistant to a hydrolysis degradation process (at pH=5 and 7.4) being not entirely degraded after 14 days and having residual masses above 57%. The incorporation of Zn-based MOFs increased the biocompatibility in terms of metabolic activity and proliferation of porcine fibroblast in contact with the composite hydrogels. The low release capacity of fibroblast encapsula ted inside hydrogels evaluated for 10 days indicated the non-efficient capacity of these matrixes as cell carriers, regardless of the structure of the Zn-based MOF. The strong adhesion of porcine fibroblast to the composite hydrogels is related to improving metabolic activity al lowing its proliferation, making these multicomponent polymeric systems useful as efficient materials in biomedical applications such as wound dressing and tissue engineering.

AbstractFollowing Calabresi and Melamed, legal theory has employed the property rule/liability rule distinction in order to hone our understanding of existing norms, as well as suggest new ones. This paper suggests an addition to the pantheon in the form of a protocol that we call an “Incorporation Rule”. It is a novel mechanism allowing private parties and courts to combine property rule and liability rule protection where both apply to the same entitlement. Incorporation Rules allow for separating the effects of intertwined property and liability rules, focusing on ex-ante voluntary determination of levels of protection usually adjudicated ex-post. Under the protocol, the entitlement is transferred to a special-purpose corporate vehicle, which then issues tailor-made securities to the owner of the entitlement and to the potential buyer or rivalrous user. In this manner, the entitlement is split along the contours of three basic corporate instruments – heterogeneous capital structure, separation of ownership and control, and an independent legal personality. By relying on these known-and-tested corporate mechanisms, risk and transaction costs are minimized, enforcement is improved, and heterogeneous preferences of individuals can be accommodated. The Incorporation Rule protocol thus allows for flexibility in protecting entitlements while facilitating efficient exchange.

This work aims to study the effect of incorporating proteins with different isoelectric points (pI) on the structure, composition and morphology of biomimetic calcium-phosphate (Ca-P) coatings. For that, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme, having respectively acidic and basic pIs, were used as model proteins. It was observed that the incorporation of positively charged proteins, such as lysozyme, was able to significantly change the structure of the coatings, possibly due to the preferential interactions between the protein and negatively charged phosphate ions. These results indicated that proteins with different characteristics can be incorporated into biomimetic Ca-P coatings in order to obtain a hybrid coating and at the same tailoring their properties.

Multilayer thin film assembly by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique offers an inexpensive and versatile route for the synthesis of functional nanomaterials. In the case of polymer-clay systems, however, the technique faces the challenges of low clay loading and lack of tunability of the film characteristics. This is addressed in the present work that achieves exponential growth in clay-containing polyelectrolyte films having high clay loading and tailored properties. Our approach involves the incorporation of a weak polyelectrolyte and a clay with relatively high charge density and small particle size. The system of investigation comprises poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as the polycation and laponite clay and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as polyanions that are used alternately to create multilayers. Successful high clay loading and exponential growth were achieved by two different approaches of polyanion incorporation in the multilayers. A progressive increase in the degree of ionization of PAA was shown to contribute to the exponential growth. Our findings also include novel pathways to manipulate thickness, surface topography, and clay content. The strategy presented here can lead to novel approaches to fabricate tailor-made nanomaterials for distinct applications.

This research work investigates the development of alginate-based films incorporating phenolic compounds extracted from Amaranthus cruentus grain using different solvents. Alginate, glycerol, and amaranth grain phenolic compounds at various concentrations were used to produce the films. An experimental Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) was used to evaluate the effect of these variables on different film’s properties, i.e., water vapor permeability, hydrophobicity, moisture content, solubility, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. This study demonstrated that high phenolic compound content and antioxidant capacity were obtained from amaranth grain using ethanol as the extraction solvent. Alginate films incorporating amaranth phenolic compounds were successfully manufactured, and this study can be used to tailor the formulation of alginate films containing amaranth phenolic compounds, depending on their final food application. For example, less flexible but more resistant and water-soluble films can be produced by increasing the alginate concentration, which was confirmed by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis. This study showed that active alginate films with amaranth phenolic compounds can be tailored to be used as food packaging material with potential antioxidant activity.

The intersection between sustainability and project management has received significant attention as organizations recognize the criticality of incorporating sustainability practices into their projects. However, incorporating sustainability considerations presents some challenges, requiring the development and adoption of methods, tools and techniques tailored to address sustainability at the project level. Against this backdrop, this study endeavors to develop an understanding of the effective incorporation of sustainability within projects through the micro-level perspective of practices. An online survey was developed based on a comprehensive literature review of which a total of 107 valid responses were collected and analyzed. The results show the most useful sustainable project management practices perceived by experienced project professionals, including ‘Sustainability team management’, ‘Lessons learned towards sustainability’ and ‘Sustainability risk register’, among others. However, a data analysis reveals a prevailing trend marked by the limited perceived usefulness of sustainability practices in the context of project management. Furthermore, through exploratory factor analysis, a clear classification of sustainable project management practices was identified, according to the specific phases of the common project management lifecycle: ‘Initiation and planning’, ‘Execution, monitoring, controlling and replanning’ and ‘Closure’. By providing a set of sustainable project management practices and identifying the underlying factors that elucidate the incorporation of sustainable project management practices across the project management lifecycle, this study extends a guiding hand to practitioners in pursuing successful sustainability integration in their projects. It vividly illustrates that sustainability can be readily incorporated into project-management processes, delivering sustainable products and/or services in a sustainable way, combining both the ‘sustainability of the project’ and ‘sustainability by the project’ perspectives.

Tissue engineering focuses on the development of materials as biosubstitutes that can be used to regenerate, repair, or replace damaged tissues. Alongside this, 3D printing has emerged as a promising technique for producing implants tailored to specific defects, which in turn increased the demand for new inks and bioinks. Especially supramolecular hydrogels based on nucleosides such as guanosine have gained increasing attention due to their biocompatibility, good mechanical characteristics, tunable and reversible properties, and intrinsic self-healing capabilities. However, most existing formulations exhibit insufficient stability, biological activity, or printability. To address these limitations, we incorporated polydopamine (PDA) into guanosine-borate (GB) hydrogels and developed a PGB hydrogel with maximal PDA incorporation and good thixotropic and printability qualities. The resulting PGB hydrogels exhibited a well-defined nanofibrillar network, and we found that PDA incorporation increased the hydrogel’s osteogenic activity while having no negative effect on mammalian cell survival or migration. In contrast, antimicrobial activity was observed against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Thus, our findings suggest that our PGB hydrogel represents a significantly improved candidate as a 3D-printed scaffold capable of sustaining living cells, which may be further functionalized by incorporating other bioactive molecules for enhanced tissue integration.

Recent advancements in additive manufacturing have extended its application to the realm of civil construction, necessitating the formulation of specialized mortars tailored for this technology. The dependency of mortar properties on locally sourced raw materials presents a challenge in adopting mortar compositions developed in other countries. This paper introduces mortars designed for additive manufacturing, utilizing Brazilian materials and incorporating asphalt fly ash, a byproduct residue. The developed mortars were evaluated using a laboratory-scale 3D printer equipped with a helicoidal screw-based extrusion system. The incorporation of asphalt fly ash significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of the dried mortar and improved the cohesion of the fresh mortar. The fresh mortar exhibited minimal slump (ranging between 10mm and 15mm) and demonstrated a compressive strength of approximately 30 MPa upon hardening. These findings indicate that the fly ash-enriched mortar is well-suited for additive manufacturing applications in civil construction, offering a promising avenue for the utilization of industrial byproducts in sustainable building practices.

Disease reversal and prevention interventions aim to promote substantial lifestyle changes in patients that are maintained for the long-term. The science of behavior change has identified many factors associated with initiating and maintaining lifestyle changes, many of which are psychosocial in nature. Disease reversal interventions can be significantly enhanced through the incorporation of a comprehensive psychological evaluation. The value of psychological assessment has been firmly established for the purposes of evaluating candidates for bariatric surgery and organ transplant, which necessitate strict and long-term lifestyle modification to maximize surgical outcomes. One of the first Heart Disease Reversal Programs housed within a Cardiology department, started at UC Davis in the early 1990s, included a psychologist and a psychological evaluation that led to a tailored plan for their patients. Psychologists also receive training in both applied research and program development/evaluation, making them well-suited to organize, coordinate, and direct disease reversal and prevention programs. Psychological assessment provides a way to gain a more complete picture of our patients, enabling us to better tailor treatment interventions that work.

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) fundamentally provide the possibility to simultaneously utilize multiple orders for different imaging functions within a system. However, to take advantage of this property, it is necessary to tailor the assignment of specific wavelengths or wavelength ranges with high diffraction efficiency to specific diffraction orders. To achieve this wavelength-selective assignment to different orders, simple diffractive profile shapes are not suitable; instead, multilayer DOEs are required. In this study, we conducted theoretical, scalar investigations on the diffraction efficiency of triple-layer double-relief DOEs for the purpose of tailored wavelength selectivity. Specific materials such as nanocomposites, layer materials, and high-refractive-index liquids with strong dispersion were included, in addition to inorganic glasses, to enable wide design freedom for wavelength selectivity across multiple orders. To simultaneously account for both positive and negative orders, specific material combinations featuring intersecting or touching dispersion curves were utilized. For various material combinations, we calculated significantly different efficiency profiles for multiple orders by varying the relief depths. Further, we discuss the possibility of fine-tuning the efficiency profiles by using high-index liquids as an intermediate layer between two solid profiles, whose dispersion properties can be varied continuously or at least in small steps.

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has revolutionized the field of the use of bioceramics for maxillofacial and periodontal applications, offering unprecedented control over the shape, size, and structure of bioceramic implants. In addition, bioceramics have become attractive materials for these applications due to their biocompatibility, biostability, and favorable mechanical properties. However, despite their advantages, bioceramic implants are still associated with inferior biological performance issues after implantation, such as slow osseointegration, inadequate tissue response, and an increased risk of implant failure. To address these challenges, researchers have been developing strategies to improve the biological performance of 3D-printed bioceramic implants. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of 3DP techniques and strategies for bioceramic materials designed for bone regeneration. The review also addresses the use and incorporation of active biomolecules in 3D-printed bioceramic constructs to stimulate bone regeneration. By controlling the surface roughness and chemical composition of the implant, the construct can be tailored to promote osseointegration and reduce the risk of adverse tissue reactions. Additionally, growth factors, such as bone morphogenic proteins (rhBMP-2) and pharmacologic agent (dipyridamole), can be incorporated to promote the growth of new bone tissue. Incorporating porosity into bioceramic constructs can improve bone tissue formation and the overall biological response of the implant. As such, employing surface modification, combining with other materials, and incorporating the 3DP workflow can lead to better patient healing outcomes.

Polypyrrole films are commonly prepared as conductive electrode surfaces for a variety of applications. Recently, there has been increasing interest in improving the adhesive properties and biocompatibility of polypyrrole electrodes via the incorporation of bioinspired polydopamine within the polymer scaffold. However, very little is currently known about the structural effects of polydopamine incorporation during the electropolymerisation of hybrid films. In this work, we combine electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance studies, fundamental electrochemical characterisation, atomic force microscopy, and a suite of spectroscopic techniques in order to correlate changes in the structure and performance of polypyrrole–polydopamine films to the structural modifications of the nanostructure induced by polydopamine incorporation. The results indicate that polydopamine incorporation greatly increases the rate of hybrid film deposition, as well as improving adhesion, surface homogeneity, and wettability, with no compromise in charge transfer properties. Polydopamine incorporation is strongly suggested to occur in non-connected domains within a predominantly polypyrrole-like scaffold. We propose a two-step model of co-polymerisation and the subsequent surface adhesion of hybrid films. Results are expected to be of broad general interest to researchers utilizing polypyrrole and polydopamine to prepare tailor-made electrodes for biosensing and catalysis.

Polyketides are biosynthesized through consecutive decarboxylative Claisen condensations between a carboxylic acid and differently substituted malonic acid thioesters, both tethered to the giant polyketide synthase enzymes. Individual malonic acid derivatives are typically required to be activated as coenzyme A-thioesters prior to their enzyme-catalyzed transfer onto the polyketide synthase. Control over the selection of malonic acid building blocks promises great potential for the experimental alteration of polyketide structure and bioactivity. One requirement for this endeavor is the supplementation of the bacterial polyketide fermentation system with tailored synthetic thioester-activated malonates. The membrane permeableN-acetylcysteamine has been proposed as a coenzyme A-mimic for this purpose. Here, the incorporation efficiency into different polyketides ofN-acetylcysteamine activated methylmalonate is studied and quantified, showing a surprisingly high and transferable activity of these polyketide synthase substrate analogues in vivo.

This qualitative study aims to analyse the personal qualification, attitudes and the pedagogical concepts of German teachers as experts in their profession regarding basic life support (BLS) education in secondary schools. Thirteen (n = 13) secondary school teachers participated in semi-structured expert interviews and were interviewed for at least 20 to 60 min regarding BLS student education. Interviews were semi-structured with guiding questions addressing (1) personal experience, (2) teacher qualification for BLS and (3) implementation factors (e.g., personal, material and organisational). Audio-recorded interviews were analysed by content analysis, generating a coding system. School teachers provided a heterogeneous view on implementation-related processes in BLS education. Many teachers were educated in first aid, acknowledge its importance, but had no experience in teaching BLS. They want to assure being competent for teaching BLS and need tailored trainings, materials, pedagogical information and the incorporation into the curriculum. Also, the management of time constraints, unwilling colleagues, or young students being overwhelmed were commonly mentioned considerations. Concluding, teachers reported to be willing to teach BLS but a stepwise implementation framework incorporating practice-oriented qualification and educational goals is missing.

Incorporation of noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs) via genetic code expansion (GCE) opens up new possibilities for chemical biology. The technology has led to the development of novel xenobiotic enzymes with tailored properties which can serve as entry points into a multitude of applications, including protein conjugation, immobilization, or labeling. In this review, we discuss recent progress in the use of GCE to create biocatalysts possessing reaction repertoires that lie beyond what is achievable with canonical amino acids (cAAs). Furthermore, we highlight how GCE enables to gain mechanistic insights into protein function by the incorporation of judiciously selected ncAAs. As the amino acid alphabet continues to grow and improved tools for ncAA incorporation are being developed, we anticipate the creation of additional powerful biological catalysts for synthetic application which merge the chemical versatility of anthropogenic building blocks with the exquisite selectivities of enzymes.

Lentiviruses such as HIV-1 encode envelope glycoproteins (Env) with long cytoplasmic tails (CTs) that include motifs mediating interactions with host-cell–trafficking factors. We demonstrated recently that Rab11-family interacting protein 1C (FIP1C) is required for CT-dependent incorporation of Env into HIV-1 particles. Here, we used viruses bearing targeted substitutions within CT to map the FIP1C-dependent incorporation of Env. We identified YW795as a critical motif mediating cell-type–dependent Env incorporation. Disruption of YW795reproduced the cell-type–dependent particle incorporation of Env that had previously been observed with large truncations of CT. A revertant virus bearing a single amino acid change near the C terminus of CT restored wild-type levels of Env incorporation, Gag–Env colocalization on the plasma membrane, and viral replication. These findings highlight the importance of YW795in the cell-type–dependent incorporation of Env and support a model of HIV assembly in which FIP1C/RCP mediates Env trafficking to the particle assembly site.

Pavement thickness design traditionally has been based on empiricism. However, mechanistic-empirical (M-E) design procedures are becoming more prevalent, and there is a current effort by AASHTO to establish a nationwide M-E standard design practice. Concurrently, an M-E design procedure for flexible pavements tailored to conditions within Minnesota has been developed and is being implemented. Regardless of the design procedure type, inherent variability associated with the design input parameters will produce variable pavement performance predictions. Consequently, for a complete design procedure, the input variability must be addressed. To account for input variability, reliability analysis was incorporated into the M-E design procedure for Minnesota. Monte Carlo simulation was chosen for reliability analysis and was incorporated into the computer pavement design tool, ROADENT. A sensitivity analysis was conducted by using ROADENT in conjunction with data collected from the Minnesota Road Research Project and the literature. The analysis demonstrated the interactions between the input parameters and showed that traffic weight variability exerts the largest influence on predicted performance variability. The sensitivity analysis also established a minimum number of Monte Carlo cycles for design (5,000) and characterized the predicted pavement performance distribution by an extreme value Type I function. Finally, design comparisons made between ROADENT, the 1993 AASHTO pavement design guide, and the existing Minnesota design methods showed that ROADENT produced comparable designs for rutting performance but was somewhat conservative for fatigue cracking.
