Inclined angles of piles and applied loadings have serious effect on the pile’s bearing capacity and settlement. In order to reveal this effect, this paper uses the nonlinear finite element software Adina 8.2 and analyzes the settlement characteristics and the influence factors on the settlement of inclined pile subjected to inclined loadings. From the analysis, it can be seen that: at given pile-soil physical properties, the settlement of inclined angle of the pile is smaller than that of the pile installed vertically subjected to vertical loadings; it is not good for larger inclined angle of inclined pile when the pile subjected to inclined loadings and the pile top settlement is always smallest when the inclined angle of the loadings agrees with that of the pile; The location of the horizontal stress balance point is related to the factors, such as loading value, pile inclined angle, et al., when subjected to vertical loadings. The conclusions obtained can have some reference value for the design and construction of inclined pile that subjected to inclined loadings.

Main part of crane systems in general and hoisting systems especially are rope-reeving systems. They are used to reduce the loading on the rope itself and on the following parts in the hoist drive. In order to transfer the performance required the reduced loading has to be compensated by higher speeds. General standard are reeving systems with just vertical rope orientation. They have advantages, as they are not difficult to plan, to build and to operate. On the other hand, they comprise disadvantages as well. One main disadvantage of vertical rope orientation is the tendency to load sway.

Within Galliformes, megapods (brush turkey, malleefowl, scrubfowl) exhibit unique forms of parental care and growth. Hatchlings receive no post-hatching parental care and exhibit the most exaggerated precocial development of all extant birds, hatching with fully developed, flight-capable forelimbs. Rather than flying up to safety, young birds preferentially employ wing-assisted incline running. Newly hatched Australian brush turkeys ( Alectura lathami ) are extraordinarily proficient at negotiating all textured inclined surfaces and can flap-walk up inclines exceeding the vertical. Yet, as brush turkeys grow, their forelimb-dependent locomotor performance declines. In an attempt to elucidate how hatchlings perform so well, we analysed hindlimb forces and forelimb kinematics. We measured ground reaction forces (GRFs) for animals spanning the entire growth range (110–2000 g) as they ascended a variably positioned inclined ramp that housed a forceplate. These data are compared with a similar dataset for a chukar partridge ( Alectoris chukar ) that exhibit a growth strategy typical of most other Galliformes and that demonstrate improved incline performance with increasing age. The brush turkeys' ontogenetic decline in incline running performance is accompanied by loss of traction at steep angles, reduced GRFs and increased wing-loading. We hypothesize that Australian brush turkeys, in contrast to other Galliformes, develop from forelimb-dominated young that exploit a variable terrain (e.g. mound nests, boulders, embankments, cliffs, bushes and trees) into hindlimb-dominated adults dependent on size and running speed to avoid predation.

Three inclined-column transfer floor structures of frame-supported short-leg shearwall are tested under vertical loading and horizontal cyclic loading to analyze the influence of leg-thickness ratio (LTR) on the seismic performance of inclined column-shaped transfer floors. The failure process and patters, bearing capacity, hysteretic characteristics, stiffness degradation, deformation and ductility are analyzed in detail. The test results show that the force characteristic of inclined column-shaped transfer floor structure is similar to a simple truss, and leg-thickness ratio of the top short-leg shearwall has important implications to the transfer beam performance; if the design is reasonable, the inclined column-shaped transfer floor structure has a good ductility, multi-channel seismic line of defense and better seismic performance.

Previous analyses of the ultimate resistance and displacements of rigid piles under lateral loads and moments have been extended to the general case of eccentric and inclined loads on flexible piles by using the concept of effective embedment depths of equivalent rigid piles. Recent research on the behaviour of large model tests on instrumented rigid and flexible piles under eccentric and inclined loads in sand, clay, and layered soil is summarized. Reasonable agreement is found between observed and predicted behaviour. The proposed method of analysis is also supported by comparison with the results of many field case records of single piles and large pile groups under lateral loads indifferent types of soils. Key words : bearing capacity, displacement, eccentric loads, inclined loads, layered soil, pile.

This thesis investigates the capacity and failure mode of suction caissons under inclined loading. Parametric finite element analyses have been carried out to investigate the effects of caisson geometry, loading angle, padeye depth (i.e. load attachment point), soil profile and caisson-soil interface condition. Displacement-controlled analyses were carried out to determine the ultimate limit state of the suction caissons under inclined load and the results presented as interaction diagrams in VH load space. VH failure interaction diagrams are presented for both cases where the caisson-soil interface is fully-bonded and where a crack is allowed to form along the side of the caisson. An elliptical equation is fitted to the normalised VH failure interaction diagram to describe the general trend in the case where the caisson-soil interface is fully-bonded. Parametric study reveals that the failure envelope in the fully-bonded case could be scaled down (contracted failure envelope) to represent the holding capacity when a crack is allowed to form. A stronger effect of crack on the capacity was observed in the lightly overconsolidated soil, compared to the normally consolidated soil. The sensitivity of caisson capacity to the changes in load attachment position or loading angle was quantified based on the load-controlled analyses. It was found that, for caisson length to diameter ratios of up to 5, the optimal centreline loading depth (i.e. where the caisson translates with no rotation) is in the range 0.65L to 0.7L in normally consolidated soil, but becomes shallower for the lightly overconsolidated soil profile where the shear strength profile is more uniform. The reduction of holding capacity when the padeye position is shifted from the optimal location was also quantified for normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated soil profiles at loading angle of 30 [degrees]. Upper bound analyses were carried out to augment the finite element study. Comparison of holding capacity and accompanying failure mechanisms obtained from the finite element and upper bound methods are made. It was found that the upper bound generally overpredicted the inclined load capacity obtained from the finite element analyses especially for the shorter caisson considered in this study. A correction factor is introduced to adjust the upper bound results for the optimal condition. Comparisons of non-optimal capacity were also made and showed that the agreement between the upper bound and finite element analyses are sensitive to the change in the centreline loading depth when the caisson-soil interface is fully bonded, but less so when a crack forms.

Skewed bridges have exhibited poorer performance during lateral earthquake loading in comparison to non-skewed bridges (Apirakvorapinit et al. 2012; Elnashai et al. 2010). Results from numerical modeling by Shamsabadi et al. (2006), small-scale laboratory tests by Rollins and Jessee (2012), and several large-scale tests performed by Rollins et al. at Brigham Young University (Franke 2013; Marsh 2013; Palmer 2013; Smith 2014; Frederickson 2015) led to the proposal of a reduction curve used to determine a passive force skew reduction factor depending on abutment skew angle (Shamsabadi and Rollins 2014). In all previous tests, a uniform longitudinal load has been applied to the simulated bridge abutment. During seismic events, however, it is unlikely that bridge abutments would experience pure longitudinal loading. Rather, an inclined loading situation would be expected, causing rotation of the abutment backwall into the backfill. In this study, a large-scale test was performed where inclined loading was applied to a 30° skewed bridge abutment with sand backfill and compared to a baseline test with uniform loading and a non-skewed abutment. The impact of rotational force on the passive resistance of the backfill and the skew adjust factor was then evaluated. It was determined that inclined loading does not have a significant effect on the passive force skew reduction factor. However, the reduction factor was somewhat higher than predicted by the proposed reduction curve from Shamsabadi and Rollins 2014. This can be explained by a reduction in the effective skew angle caused by the friction between the side walls and the back wall. The inclined loading did not change the amount of movement required to mobilize passive resistance with ultimate passive force developing for displacements equal to 3 to 6% of the wall height. The rotation of the pile cap due to inclined loading produced higher earth pressure on the obtuse side of the skew wedge, as was expected. These findings largely resolve the concern that inclined loading situations during an earthquake may render the proposed passive force skew reduction curve invalid. We suggest that the proposed reduction curve remains accurate during inclined loading and should be implemented in current codes and practices to properly account for skew angle in bridge design.

This study investigated the performance of hollow composite members, and the possibility of cross inclined bars in performance improvement for members subjected to earthquake-induced loads. A series of tests on composite members subjected to bending and torsion were conducted. Major parameters studied included the sectional aspect ratios, magnitudes of three-dimensional loads and the placement of cross inclined bars. The test results obtained from the combined load tests were used to define the relationship among member performance, sectional aspect ratios, and the load combinations. The test results showed that the bearing capacity of members significantly decreased when members were under three-dimensional loads. Comparisons of test results also showed that the stiffness and ductility of the strengthened members were significantly increased. Enhancement in energy dissipation further validated the applicability of inclined bars to the performance improvement of hollow composite members.

An analytical solution has been developed to estimate the inclined pullout capacity of an embedded suction anchor in clay seafloor. Validation has been made through comparisons with a limited number of centrifuge model test results. Results indicate that the inclined pullout capacity of an embedded suction anchor in clay decreases as the load inclination angle to the horizontal increases. As the point of the load application moves downward, the inclined pullout capacity increases, reaches its peak, and then starts to decrease.

Resumo:
The broad objective of the research presented herein is to analyze dynamical interactions in offshore structures under combined wind and wave loads for enhanced power delivery and reliability of hybrid wind-wave generation systems. As an offshore structure representative, a model for an inclined floating cylinder at finite depth is developed employing linear wave theory coupled with wind-induced effects. Although detailed wave models have often been incorporated while studying the dynamics of such cylinders, wind-induced effects have been mostly modeled as an axial drag term that affects the drift of the structure along the wind direction. In this article, the effects of not only wind-induced drag, but also lift and oscillations on the structure (i.e. the floating inclined cylinder) are studied. Further, the effects of vortex shedding are considered. Cross-flow principle is used to calculate the wind loads on the cylinder. Assuming small wave steepness and a large radius of cylinder (in comparison to the wavelength), linear wave diffraction and radiation theory coupled with wind-induced effects is employed to analyze the dynamic response of the inclined floating cylinder. Numerical results on the dynamic response of an inclined floating cylinder subjected to coupled wind-wave loading system are presented and discussed while highlighting the increasing relevance of such modeling strategies for hybrid wind-wave power generation systems and their control.

This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads and provides in-plane stability of the arch. A methodology for laboratory testing of the prototype models of wooden arches subjected to different types of loads was developed. Two prototypes of wooden arches were tested with rectangular cross-sections and two T-section ones subjected to the loading across the span, and two prototypes subjected to the half-span loading. In total, eight arches were tested. Deflections of arches, cross-section deformations and arch thrust force were recorded. The arches were tested until failure. The results of testing revealed insufficient stability of the arches with rectangular cross-section in the horizontal plane. For the arches with T-section the whole arch rib was damaged, the in-plane stability was ensured by the T-section. The collapsing force of the T-section arch was about 1.3 times greater than the collapsing force of the rectangular section arches.
