Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN) is an emerging telecommunications technology that will affect how distance education is designed, developed, and presented. Combined with integrated desktop workstations, it will put voice, text, and video telecommunications at the fingertips of educators and learners. Appropriate use of ISDN for distance education and training depends on the development of a conceptual scheme to integrate models from several closely related areas such as integrated information systems, educational broadcasting, computer assisted instruction, and distance education. In a project funded by Northern Telecom Inc., faculty and students of the Department of Educational Technology at San Diego State University are presently involved in evaluating an integrated telecommunications system and developing an integrated model of distance education.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has stunted medical education activities, resulting in most conferences being cancelled or postponed. To continue professional education during this crisis, web-based conferences can be conducted via livestream and an audience interaction platform as an alternative. Objective The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has affected human connections worldwide. Conventional conferences have been replaced by web-based conferences. However, web-based conferencing has its challenges and limitations. This paper reports the logistics and preparations required for converting an international, on-site, multidisciplinary conference into a completely web-based conference within 3 weeks during the pandemic. Methods The program was revised, and a teleconference system, live recording system, director system setup, and broadcasting platform were arranged to conduct the web-based conference. Results We used YouTube (Alphabet Inc) and WeChat (Tencent Holdings Limited) for the web-based conference. Of the 24 hours of the conventional conference, 21.5 hours (90%) were retained in the web-based conference via live broadcasting. The conference was attended by 71% (37/52) of the original international faculties and 71% (27/38) of the overall faculties. In total, 61 out of 66 presentations (92%) were delivered. A special session—“Dialysis access management under the impact of viral epidemics”—was added to replace precongress workshops and competitions. The conference received 1810, 1452, and 1008 visits on YouTube and 6777, 4623, and 3100 visits on WeChat on conference days 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Conclusions Switching from a conventional on-site conference to a completely web-based format within a short period is a feasible method for maintaining professional education in a socially responsible manner during a pandemic.

Estimation of the photosynthetic performance of co-existing tree species with pronounced differences in ecophysiological context (Aranda et al. 1996 Leuschner et al. 2001) could provide insight into their vitality and competitive abilities at a particular site. Gas exchange, composition of photosynthetic pigments, and the water status of beech (Fagus sylvatica L) and sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt) Liebl) were studied in the present work. The investigation was performed on Mt. Maljen (Western Serbia, near the town of Mionica) at an altitude of 950 m, in an ecotope within the confines of the mountain's beech forest belt. Codominant samplings [three of each species, 30-years old (n=6), 10-12 m high] were selected for the measurements, which were conducted on fully developed leaves from the out?ermost branches and from the innermost canopy. Photosynthetic measurements were performed using an LI-6200 closed photo?synthesis system (LI-Cor. Inc, Lincoln, NE, USA), while irradiance was detected with a selenium cell mounted on the leaf chamber. Parameters of gas exchange are expressed on the basis of leaf area, using the AREAMETER software (Karadzic et al. 1999). Chlorophyll content was spectrophotometrically determined based on light absorption of the solution obtained after extraction with dMSO (Hiscox and Israelstam, 1979). The midday water saturation deficit was determined according to Turner (1981). For data analysis, we used the Statistic for Windows program package. The ANOVA one-way break?down was applied to compare differences within (leaves inside vs. leaves outside the surface of the tree canopy) and between species for all investigated parameters at the 0.05 level of significance.

Abstract Purpose: Identification of women with hereditary forms of cancer allows for use of precision medicine approaches to improve survival. Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women in the US general population are less likely to undergo genetic testing or utilize risk-reducing strategies. Whether these disparities exist within the equal-access military healthcare system of the Department of Defense is not known. Methods: Genetic test information and surgical procedures were extracted for all NHB and Non-Hispanic Whites (NHW) with invasive breast cancer who were diagnosed and treated at the Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and enrolled in the Clinical Breast Care Project. National Comprehensive Cancer Network criteria from the year of diagnosis were assessed for all patients. Data were analyzed using chi-square analysis with p<0.05 defining significance. Results: NHB were significantly (p=0.009) more likely to meet criteria for genetic testing compared to NHW, however, test uptake did not differ significantly between populations (p=0.292). Pathogenic variant frequency (p=0.597), prophylactic mastectomy (p=0.915) and oophorectomy (p=0.076) did not differ significantly between populations. Conclusion: These data demonstrate that when barriers, such as cost and lack of insurance barriers were removed, NHB were as willing to pursue testing and risk-reducing strategies as their NHW counterparts. Increasing the availability of testing and clinical management for NHB with hereditary forms of cancer may help reduce disparate survival seen in the US general population. Abstract Abstract 4437 This multi-center, open-label, single-arm study evaluated the safety and efficacy of nilotinib in patients with imatinib resistant/intolerant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in blast crisis, accelerated phase and chronic phase. This study provided expanded access to nilotinib prior to commercial availability. Methods: Patients received nilotinib orally at a dose of 400 mg twice daily. Adverse events were monitored throughout the study and assessments of cardiac, hematology and blood chemistry were performed every 3 months at a minimum. The efficacy assessments were performed every 6 months at a minimum and comprised of cytogenetic analysis of bone marrow, evaluation of extramedullary disease, and cancer related symptoms. Results: Sixty-five patients were enrolled in the study. The median age was 56 (range 21–85) years; 50.8% were male, and 89.2% Caucasian. The majority of patients (92.3%) were in chronic phase; 3.1% and 4.6% of the patients were in blast crisis and accelerated phase respectively. Twenty-five (38.5%) patients were imatinib-resistant, thirty-seven (56.9%) imatinib-intolerant and three (4.6%) both imatinib-resistant and -intolerant. The overall median duration of treatment with nilotinib was 27.2 (range 0.3 – 48.8) months. Thirty-six patients (55.4%) were still on treatment at study end. The main reasons for discontinuation were adverse events (16.9%) and unsatisfactory therapeutic effect (12.3%). Treatment related adverse events reported in at least 10% of patients, irrespective of severity, included rash (23.1%), pruritus (20%), fatigue (18.5%), muscle spasms (15.4%), headache (16.9%), alopecia (13.8%), abdominal pain (10.8%) and lipase elevation (10.8%). Grade 3 and 4 adverse events reported in at least 5% of patients, irrespective of study drug relationship, included thrombocytopenia (12.3 %), anemia (6.2%), neutropenia (6.2%) and lipase elevation (6.2%). Three patients (4.6%) discontinued due to cardiac disorders including tachycardia (1), myocardial infarction (1), and palpitations (1). Clinically significant abnormal ECG results were uncommon and mostly transient. There was no evidence of toxicity to a major organ system. One patient died within 28 days after study discontinuation due to progression of recently diagnosed multiple myeloma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease deterioration not suspected to be related to study drug. Thirty patients received treatment for at least 30 months with nilotinib on study. At month 30, 14 (82.4%) of 17 patients who underwent a bone marrow aspirate achieved a complete cytogenetic response. Seven of these fourteen patients (50%) had never previously achieved complete cytogenetic response with imatinib. Conclusions: This phase IIIB trial provided nilotinib to 65 patients with imatinib-resistant or -intolerant chronic CML in all phases on expanded access for 44 months, allowing evaluation of its safety profile. Nilotinib treatment was reasonably well-tolerated with an overall safety profile similar to that reported in previous studies, without the occurrence of unexpected adverse events. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR of BCR-ABL mRNA levels was not a study endpoint but is used routinely in Canada to monitor patients in complete cytogenetic response instead of cytogenetic assessments which likely explains the low compliance with cytogenetic assessments in this study. Summary 2012 was the year of film in Estonia, when the 100th anniversary of Estonian film was celebrated. One of the most significant undertakings planned for this occasion was the creation of the Estonian film database (electronic national filmography). Performing this large-scale task was undertaken by the NPO Estonian Film Database, launched in 2007. The main objective of the undertaking was to form a complete Estonian national filmography within ten years (2007-2018) and make it available in a web environment to everyone interested, both in Estonia and abroad. The access to the database was opened in late fall, 2012 (www.efis.ee). Together with newsreels, the number of produced items reaches over 12 000. Feature films, documentaries and popular films, anima, television, educational programmes, advertising films and newsreels form a rich collection of the life, history, culture and people of Estonia. Nearly 3 000 filmmakers and most Estonian actors and actresses have participated in creating the Estonian film heritage. Several thousand people, events, places, buildings, offices and institutions in Estonia participate in or are mentioned in the films. In addition, the films are adressing several thousand people shown or talking in films. The electronic database opens the film treasury in a summarised way, employing a variety of possibilities offered by modern electronic databases. A metadata system and coding instructions were prepared for each film, person and institution in the extensive space of attributes with search options, which combines the interactive features of a film directory and bibliographical, biographical databases. Each film is described as thoroughly as possible. The attributes of films contain data about the subject, genre, authors, cast, production team, locations, producers, copyrights and distributors of films and about the technical parameters of films, as well as the bibliography of films, references to the reviews, articles, books published about films and the makers of films, digitised frames and pictures from films, trailers and promotional clips, scripts, memories of the makers and other interesting details. The subject content of films is indexed in 12 categories and related sub-groups and enables the search of films by plot/subject content, physical items, themes of newsreels and feature films, people, time, events, locations, building sites and institutions. In addition, films are indexed by a film-adapted UDC. As a result, more than 50 000 keywords enable thorough multi-layered content and subject search. All filmmakers are given their personal websites, which provides an overview of their creative careers and filmographies. The electronic film database is interfaced with other similar databases at the Estonian Public Broadcasting, film archive of the National Archives, National Library and the Baltic Film and Media School of the Tallinn University. The web interface offers the possibility to enter with an ID-card and allows advance into several digital storages, where it is possible to view the films produced and purchase them for streaming. The filmography is interfaced with social networks (Facebook, Twitter) and is aiming the possibility to interlink it with the European Film Gateway in the future, thus offering access to a digitised film treasury through Europeana. The database is aimed at film professionals, teachers, students, researchers and the general public as the target audience. Among others, the key issues of cultural databases draw on the approaches and solutions for information retrieval and are relying in particular on the principles of conceptual (intellectual) subject indexing of audiovisual artefacts. Inspired by classical works of Panofsky, Shatford, Turner and others regarding image description, analysis and interpretation the article covers some main issues regarding options for a multifunctional film indexing metadata. The text tackles different aspects of the description of moving images for public needs in general and also describes the specific details of the system, developed for deep keywording of Estonian films. The rationale, limits and disputable issues as well as our experience and basic suggestions for professional indexers who are undertaking these kind of tasks are also revealed.

System integrity (i.e. the capability of self-monitoring) and the reliability of the positions provided need to be ensured within all safety critical applications of the GPS technology. For the sake of such applications, GPS augmentations, for example Space Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) are to be applied to achieve the required level of integrity. SBAS provides integrity in a multi-step procedure that is laid out in the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for airborne navigation equipment using GPS. Besides integrity, SBAS also improves accuracy of positioning via broadcasting corrections to reduce the most important systematic errors on standalone positioning. To quantify integrity, the protection level is defined, which is calculated from the standard deviation of the models broadcast in SBAS. <br><br> Air Navigation Service Providers, airspace users and aviation authorities need to evaluate the performance of GPS systems and their augmentations. This is a necessary step to define the conditions under which GPS systems can be operationally used and which operations can be supported. For this evaluation two proprietary software are used widely in Europe: Pegasus from Eurocontrol (Butzmühlen et al., 2001) and magicGemini from GMV. Both tools provide several functionalities such as computation of position simulating MOPS-compliant receivers and determination of GNSS augmentation attributes like accuracy, integrity, continuity and availability. <br><br> RTKLIB is an open source GNSS data processing and analysis tool (Takasu, 2009). The actual version (2.4.3) of RTKLIB has SBAS augmented positioning mode, but no protection level calculation is included. There is an open source project on GitHub3, a fork of RTKLIB 2.4.2 version with an option for WAAS MOPS compliant position calculation, including protection level calculation, too. This was developed by the Houghton Associates, Inc. and tested on Cygwin platform. Their development was finished in 2014. We have merged the WAAS MOPS position calculation into the newer RTKLIB release (2.4.3 beta) and made closer integration into the original RTKLIB utility program RNX2RTKP. Our enhanced RTKLIB version is also available on GitHub4 as a fork of the original RTKLIB project of Tomoji Takasu. This enhanced version was developed and tested on Ubuntu Linux 14.04 and 16.04. <br><br> Raw static and kinematic data were post-processed by our enhanced RTKLIB version. Calculated SBAS positions and protection levels were compared to the results of Pegasus and magicGemini. Although the RTCA standard defines the exact formula to calculate protection levels, the numerical results of the tested software are slightly different. Accurate tests regarding the possible sources of this kind of discrepancies were carried on in order to validate our open source solution. <br><br> The aim of our work is to provide an open source alternative to the available proprietary software. The open source solution might be a good basis for the evaluation of GPS and SBAS performance monitoring.

AbstractThe media systems of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey represent what Daniel Hallin and Paolo Mancini have proposed as the Southern European or polarised pluralistic model. Regardless of their differences, the media in Southern Europe are characterised by low levels of newspaper circulation, a tradition of advocacy reporting, instrumentalisation of privately owned media, politicisation of public broadcasting and broadcast regulation and limited development of journalism as an autonomous profession. In the digital era, the media in Southern Europe have to adjust themselves to the new conditions, as citizens have turned rapidly to the digital and social media, regardless the uneven development of the Internet in most countries. It seems that digitisation of the media landscape has led the Southern European media to follow a path not very dissimilar to other European countries as in the past. The advent of digital and social media, as well as the emergence of citizen journalism, has made the news media landscape even more uncertain for the legacy media and the professional journalist, but less controlled by the state, which used to be the norm in the analogue past.

Abstract As I conceive Of It, ethical behavior produces and preserves value in the world. A morally good person knows what has value and acts to produce and preserve it. This book articulates and defends a particular vision of what has value and therefore of the morally good life: the view that the satisfaction of interests is of primary and overriding moral value. In the 1990s, it has become common to make appeals to what is in nature’s interests. In 1990, the editors of Audubon magazine began describing it on its masthead as “Speaking for Nature.” On the twentieth anniversary of the original Earth Day, David Brower’s autobiography was published with the title For Earth’s Sake. A book called Fifty Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth went to the top of the nonfiction bestseller list. And in the wake of Earth Day 1990, a surprising range of companies began describing themselves or their products as “Environment Friendly” (President’s Choice), “Kind to the Earth” (K-Mart), or “Taking Bold Steps for Earth” (Turner Broadcasting System). The language of both environmentalists and businesses in the 1990s suggests that both human beings and nature have interests in some literal sense, interests that can come to loggerheads.

Chapter 32 begins with Bradbury’s reaction to news of Federico Fellini’s death on Halloween, 1993, and explores Bradbury’s sense of Halloween as a time of “fervor and excitement,” but not a time of happiness. Bradbury’s reflections on the later Fellini films gives way to the more positive process of bringing The Halloween Tree back to its original concept as an animated film with Hanna-Barbera and the Turner Broadcasting System. The chapter concludes with Bradbury’s work on two unrealized science fiction film projects, a proposed remake of the 1950s classic Forbidden Planet and short-lived plans for a sequel to The Day the Earth Stood Still. The chapter concludes with an examination of “Beyond Giverny,” Bradbury’s speculative American Way essay on life in the cosmos.

This article focuses on the mentoring of newly qualified teachers (NQT) in Sweden and gives a brief historical overview of how mentoring has appeared on the educational agenda in Sweden and how its focus has changed over time. The research questions that guide this study are: (a) what major key events and reforms can be identified in relation to implementing mentoring of NQTs in Sweden, and how have these efforts turned out; (b) what is the state at present; (c) how is the issue of education and training dealt with; and (d) what key players and initiatives for the future can be identified? The methodological approach is a systematic review of policy documents and research on mentoring in Sweden from 1970–2019, as well as analyses of key actors web pages. Two important reforms are identified: (1) the national agreement (ÖLA, 2000) in 1995 between the Swedish Association of Local Authorities (SALAR), the National Union of Teachers in Sweden (Lärarnas Riksförbund) and the Swedish Teachers’ Union (Lärarförbundet), giving NQTs the right to be supported by a mentor and to participate in an induction programme; and (2) the parliamentary decision in 2011 to introduce a reform package which included teacher registration with a probationary year, evaluations of NQTs and a mentoring system. The probationary year and principals’ evaluations of NQTs were discontinued in 2014. A side effect of this was that mentoring became downplayed, which led to new initiatives to get mentoring back on the educational agenda. A professional programme with four levels of proficiency has been identified as a key reform that, if implemented, could put mentoring and the professional development of NQTs back on the educational agenda. The current situation in Sweden is that some legislation and regulations related to the mentoring of NQTs are in place, although recent data shows that induction and mentoring are not as widespread as might be expected. Major stakeholders such as the two teacher unions, the Swedish National Agency for Education and the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company (UR) are identified as providers of web-based materials supporting NQTs.
