AbstractSince its loss 100 years ago, RMS Titanic continues to captivate people worldwide as an epic story of tragedy at sea and as an iconic shipwreck with many mysteries still to be unraveled from its physical remains on the ocean bottom. RMS Titanic, Inc., has completed eight expeditions to RMS Titanic in its capacity as salvor-in-possession. These efforts include the first comprehensive remote-sensing survey of the shipwreck site in 2010. During this time, the company’s focus has evolved from marine salvage to treatment of RMS Titanic as an archaeological site. An important tool in archaeological interpretation of historic shipwrecks is a geographic information system (GIS).In 2006, RMS Titanic, Inc., formally initiated the GIS-based Titanic Mapping Project. Components of the Titanic Mapping Project include data rescue, digital transfer of film media, design of GIS methodology, verification and rectification of positioning data from original field records, preparation of detailed profiles for all recovered artifacts, development of GIS attribute tables for recovered artifacts and key in situ site features, and integration of remote-sensing data from Titanic Expedition 2010. With information on over 5,500 accessioned artifacts organized within the GIS, the company looks forward to making substantive contributions to deepwater archaeological research and forensic investigations of the shipwreck site. In combination with current architectural- and engineering-related knowledge of RMS Titanic, new light can be cast on such topics as the wrecking event during that fateful night in 1912.

We are very honored to receive the prestigious JDR Award for the Most Cited Paper 2022. The winning paper, “Real-Time Tsunami Prediction System Using DONET,” discusses a system that uses data from the Dense Oceanfloor Network system for Earthquakes and Tsunamis (DONET), which was installed in the rupture areas of the 1944 Tonankai and 1946 Nankai earthquakes in order to instantly generate and visualize tsunami prediction information. The forecast information from this system consists of tsunami arrival time, maximum tsunami height, tsunami inundation area, and inundation depth distribution. The system, which visualizes and distributes forecast information for areas where users need it as a supplement to the tsunami information provided nationwide by the Japan Meteorological Agency, has been introduced in Wakayama Prefecture, Mie Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, and the city of Owase, as well as by Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. After DONET was installed in the Tonankai rupture area, we were considering the possibility of using DONET data regionally, and we developed the system as results of discussions with Wakayama Prefecture and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. Under the concept that the users themselves would be operating the system, we intended to make the system as simple and easy to understand as possible, and to reduce costs by minimizing the number of hardware units. We also considered making the system flexible and scalable, recognizing that each user has a different way of how to use the tsunami forecast information. We were able to receive this award thanks to the cooperation of the people who were involved in many discussions with us during the process of establishing the concept. We will not become complacent going forward, but will continue to improve our system in ways that reflect the opinions of the users. We would like to thank everyone who has cited this paper with their interests.

Product data management (PDM) has proven its value as a critical tool in handling the enormous amounts of technical information companies generate. Now the PDM industry is applying this experience to more affordable systems targeted at smaller organizations. Several suppliers have entered the market with economical approaches aimed specifically at midsized companies. Many companies use PDM to eliminate inefficiencies in the engineering change process. Diebold, Inc. reduced engineering change cycle time by 30 percent through process automation with PDM. IBM is using PDM technology in product development for sharing data among groups, designing tools tightly coupled with release and change processes, interfacing with procurement and other services, and establishing real-time communication of data across the enterprise. Engineers increasingly are using PDM viewing features to track subsystems. Virtual-mockup capabilities enable engineers to import all the parts files for a product designed in Solid Edge, regardless of computer-aided design (CAD) vendor or file format.

<p>This study examined the potential of electricity generation from biogas and heat energy arising from municipal solid waste (MSW) collected from the year 2021 to 2045 using anaerobic digestion (AD) and incineration (INC) technologies. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the economic and environmental benefits of implementing the aforementioned technologies in Lesotho. The environmental impact was assessed by using the life cycle assessment strategy based on global warming potential for three scenarios, while the economic assessment was carried out by using the net present value (NPV), levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and total life cycle cost. The key findings show that, over 25 years (2021–2045), MSW generation will range from 185.855 to 513.587 kilotons. The methane yield for the duration of the project for AD technology is 44.67–126.56 thousand cubic meters per year. Moreover, the electricity generation will range from 0.336–0.887 GWh for AD technology and 17.15–45.34 GWh for INC technology. Economically, the results demonstrated that the two waste-to-energy technologies are viable, as evidenced by their positive NPV. The NPV for AD was about USD 0.514 million, and that for INC technology was USD 339.65 million. AD and INC have LCOEs of 0.029 and 0.0023 USD/kWh, respectively. The findings demonstrate that AD can minimize the potential for global warming by 95%, signifying a huge environmental advantage. This paper serves to provide the government, as well as the investors, with current and trustworthy information on waste-to-energy technologies in terms of costs, execution and worldwide effect, which could aid optimal decision-making in waste-to-energy projects in Lesotho.</p>

Abstract T cells engineered with chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) specific to CD19 have caused rapid and durable clinical responses in ~90% of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These data support the development of additional CAR T cell products for the treatment of other hematological malignancies. Recently, B cell maturation antigen (BCMA) expression has been proposed as a marker for identification of malignant plasma cells in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Nearly all MM and some non-Hodgkin's lymphoma tumor cells express BCMA, while normal tissue expression is restricted to plasma cells and a subset of mature B cells. Therefore, BCMA is an attractive CAR T cell target to treat patients with MM and some B cell lymphomas. To this end, using lentiviral vector technology, we successfully generated CAR T cells specific to BCMA that exhibit potent anti-tumor activity to both multiple myeloma and Burkitt's lymphoma in animal models. Manufacture of CAR T cells for individual patient treatment requires the establishment of a robust and reproducible process - since variability in manufacturing could impact the potency of each cell product. To begin to understand the parameters of the manufacturing process that might contribute to the activity of the final product, we first tested the impact of lentiviral vector (LVV) multiplicity of infection (MOI) on CAR T cell phenotype and function. Using a broad range of MOIs (0.625 to 40) across multiple independent PBMC donors we observed no differences in population doubling or cell size throughout the ~10 day manufacturing process, irrespective of the MOI used. As expected, the number of anti-BCMA CAR expressing cells, the level of CAR expression per cell and the average vector copy number (VCN) in the cell product increased proportionally with MOI. Similarly, T cell function, as determined by an IFNg cytokine release assay in response to BCMA-expressing K562 target cells, was also correlated with the LVV MOI. Notably, increased IFNg expression was readily observable at MOIs as low as 1.25 and reached a plateau with T cells generated using an MOI of 20 or more - highlighting the sensitivity of this functional assay. Analogous data demonstrating MOI dependent in vitro killing activity were obtained using a BCMA-expressing tumor cell cytotoxicity assay. Varying the LVV MOI used during transduction simultaneously alters both the amount of anti-BCMA CAR molecules expressed per cell as well as the number of T cells in the cell product that express anti-BCMA CAR. To evaluate each variable in isolation we generated T cell products containing the same frequency of anti-BCMA CAR T cells (26 ± 4% CAR+ T cells) but different levels of anti-BCMA expression per cell by diluting T cell products made with MOIs from 5 to 40 with donor-matched untransduced cells. While these populations had markedly different levels of CAR surface expression per cell (based on anti-BCMA CAR MFI levels measured by flow cytometry) both low and high expressing anti-BCMA CAR T cell products exhibited identical levels of cytotoxicity against BCMA-expressing tumor cells. These data suggest it is the number of CAR expressing cells that is the critical driver of higher functional activity (perhaps due to the efficiency of LVV mediated anti-BCMA CAR expression per transduced cell). Finally, using this information the variability in manufacturing of anti-BCMA CAR T cells was evaluated across 11 independent normal PBMC donors. All 11 products demonstrated very similar properties with respect to cell growth (population doublings, cell volume), and VCN. Importantly, using our standard MOI we obtained a consistent and high level of anti-BCMA CAR expressing T cells that resulted in robust IFNg cytokine release when co-cultured with BCMA-expression cells. Together, our data highlight the frequency of anti-BCMA CAR T cells per cell product as a key parameter for anti-tumor activity in vitro. Moreover, these data suggest that our LVV driven T cell engineering process can reproducibly generate robust anti-BCMA CAR expressing T cell products in a donor independent manner. A phase I clinical trial to evaluate this technology as a cell-based gene therapy for MM is under development. Disclosures Lilley: bluebird bio, Inc: Employment, Equity Ownership. GPS tracking technology produces large amounts of data which represent samples of the commercial vehicle population that are much larger than conventional commercial travel surveys. However, passively collected GPS data lack behavioral detail that a conventional survey offers. This study develops a data fusion method to impute variables of interest for a large GPS data set, by establishing a link to a behaviorally rich commercial travel survey data set. As a case study, this study uses detailed information from the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario’s Commercial Vehicle Survey (CVS), a truck intercept survey conducted in 2012, to enrich a GPS commercial vehicle tracking data set from Xata Turnpike Inc. The enrichment process has three parts: converting raw GPS tracking data into GPS trips, matching CVS trips to GPS trips, and imputing the missing variables for GPS trips. Evaluation of the outcomes concludes that imputation methods can produce a synthetic data set with large sample size (from GPS data) and rich information (from roadside interview data) with good accuracy.

Iowa's Scenic Byway Program was initiated by the Iowa Legislature in 1987. The Iowa Department of Transportation chose four pilot routes in Iowa and worked with local governments to develop agreements for erecting and maintaining signs on the scenic byways. The Iowa Department of Economic Development's (IDED) Division of Tourism initiated an advertising program for the pilot phase by selecting unique names for each scenic byway, printing and distributing colorful brochures at 18 Iowa Welcome Centers, and placing advertisements in Midwest regional newspapers. Davidson-Peterson Associates, Inc. (DPA), and David L. Dahlquist Associates, Inc. (DDA), were commissioned by IDED to evaluate visitors' responses to Iowa's new scenic byways pilot program during the 1994 tourism season. The research objectives were to: ( a) measure the economic benefits that have accrued to participating counties and communities from the pilot program; ( b) determine how travelers have responded to this program and how their travel behavior has been influenced by this program; and ( c) assess the interest of travelers in Iowa in the scenic by ways program and thereby to project future benefits that might be derived from continuing and expanding this program. To meet the research objectives, DPA and DDA conducted 600 telephone interviews, collected 456 on-site, self-administered questionnaires, and conducted 70 in-depth interviews. The pilot program had some successes in a short time. There were economic benefits, and visitors were pleased with their experiences. Visitors and local officials made suggestions for improvements in signage, additional information in the brochures, and changes in the byway routes.

Cloud computing is widely used in various sectors such as finance, health care, and education. Factors such as cost optimization, interoperability, data analysis, and data ownership functionalities are attracting healthcare industry to use cloud services. Security and forensic concerns are associated in cloud environments as sensitive healthcare data can attract the outside attacker and inside malicious events. Storage is the most used service in cloud computing environments. Data stored in iCloud (Apple Inc. Cloud Service Provider) is accessible via a Web browser, cloud client application, or mobile application. Apple Inc. provides iCloud service to synchronize data from MacBook, iPhone, iPad, etc. Core applications such as Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Photos, Notes, Reminders, and Keynote are synced with iCloud. Various operations can be performed on cloud data, including editing, deleting, uploading, and downloading data, as well as synchronizing data between devices. These operations generate log files and directories that are essential from an investigative perspective. This paper presents a taxonomy of iCloud forensic tools that provides a searchable catalog for forensic practitioners to identify the tools that meet their technical requirements. A case study involving healthcare data storage on iCloud service demonstrates that artifacts related to environmental information, browser activities (history, cookies, cache), synchronization activities, log files, directories, data content, and iCloud user activities are stored on a MacBook system. A GUI-based dashboard is developed to support iCloud forensics, specifically the collection of artifacts from a MacBook system.

The state-of-the-art in airborne coastal mapping and charting technology is the Compact Hydrographic Airborne Rapid Total Survey (CHARTS) system. CHARTS is the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office program name for an Optech, Inc. SHOALS 3000T20-E. CHARTS comprises a 3 kHz bathymetric lidar, a 20 kHz topographic lidar, a DuncanTech DT4000 high-resolution digital camera, and a Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager(CASI)-1500. The integrated sensor suite has the capability to collect lidar bathymetry, lidar topography, RGB imagery, and hyperspectral imagery. Beyond these products, the diffuse attenuation coefficient and seafloor reflectance at multiple wavelengths may be estimated by combining information from the bathymetric lidar waveform and the hyperspectral imagery. The Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX) specified development of the CHARTS system and currently manages its operations for Department of Defense customers. CHARTS data collection rate of 21 square nautical miles per survey hour enables rapid completion of large nautical charting work for the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Coastal Mapping Program uses CHARTS to collect engineering scale data for the entire U.S. coastline. JALBTCX continues to lead development in the field of airborne lidar and integrated technologies for coastal mapping and charting. Future research efforts include mining the individual data sets collected by CHARTS for information beyond elevation, combining data sets to further identify physical and environmental characteristics of the coastal zone, and integrating additional complementary sensors with CHARTS.

Environmental data are critical to understanding environmental phenomena, yet their consistent collection and curation can be cost-prohibitive. This paper describes a recipe for the design, development, and deployment of a low-cost environmental data logging and transmission system for environmental sensors and its connection to an open source data-sharing network. The hardware is built using several low-cost, open-source, mass-produced components. The system automatically ingests data into HydroServer, a standards-based server in the open source hydrologic information system (HIS) created by the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences Inc. (CUAHSI). By publishing data in this way, they are discoverable through the geographic information system (GIS)-based CUAHSI tools, HydroDesktop and HydroShare. In addition, because they follow WaterML encoding, open hardware data stored in the HIS can be included in international catalog such as the global earth observation system of system catalog. A recipe for building the system is provided. Multiple deployments used to test proof-of-concept of the system are described and their results are given. Ease of deployment and reliability of the logging and transmission system is also addressed.

The Google Earth service is an information system with extensive functionality used in the Internet, for mobile devices and for desktop computers. The system is a "virtual globe" built on pooled photographs with the addition of spatial information provided by Alphabet Inc in the coordinate system - WGS 84 and the universal cross-section of Mercator. In the system there is an opportunity to lay a line of a route, to receive a longitudinal profile of this line with marks and a slope. However, the question of the accuracy of spatial information remains. The answer to this question will highlight a range of engineering, geodetic and design tasks that can be solved with this service. The article considers this problem from the analysis of height errors. The accuracy of Google Earth's spatial information can be assessed by comparing it to a geodetic reference object. As such object in this work the data of adjustment of the design documentation for construction of the highway bypassing Novy Bug (the second turn) in the Nikolaev area are taken. In the first stage, a "reference" object has been considered, for which there are spatial data obtained by geodetic methods of a given accuracy. In the second stage, the Google Earth system built a road route and a longitudinal profile. At the third stage the received information was systematized and analyzed. In this work, the accuracy of construction of the longitudinal profile by geodetic methods was reduced due to the construction of a black line of the longitudinal profile through a digital terrain model, and hence due to the standard errors of Delaunay triangulation. When using geometric leveling data, the compatibility of the two longitudinal profiles will increase. With careful preparation of the original data, you can achieve meter accuracy in height. Representation of the Earth's surface with such accuracy can be used in solving many engineering problems: variant design of linear structures, preliminary feasibility study of design solutions and more. In the future, we must to assess the horizontal errors.

Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) is often used in nondestructive testing to make high-fidelity, non-contact structural dynamic measurements. However, synchronized measurement on slow, structural dynamics (SD) and fast, ultrasonic (US) time scales can yield additional useful information about the overall condition of elastic structures. This work presents a technique, Dynamic Asymmetric Transmission Measurement (DATM), that enables time-aligned measurements of large-scale structural dynamics via LDV and small-scale ultrasonic signals to provide information at a particular global dynamic state of an elastic structure. This approach is applicable to structural health monitoring and generalizable to the measurement of guided ultrasonic waves propagating in structural components subjected to time-varying stress states. We demonstrate the utility of DATM by detecting and characterizing time-varying stress conditions caused by local nonlinearity due to surface-breaking cracks resulting in time-varying asymmetric transmission of US signals in beam and plate structures. The test methodology to synchronize LDV and US data is presented together with example measurements. Abstract Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a highly aggressive blood cancer affecting children and adults. Certain high-risk disease subsets have poor outcomes and often debilitating therapy-related toxicities stemming from direct inhibition of the oncogenes. We hypothesize that the process of oncogenic transformation is driven by aberrant activity of oncogene-associated chromatin modifying partners. These changes create a chromatin environment unique to the malignant state and, therefore, disruption of critical oncogenic chromatin signatures would not likely affect healthy tissues. We have generated strong evidence for the intertwined roles between the NOTCH1 oncogenic pathway and deubiquitinase enzymes in T cell leukemia, members of the ubiquitin-specific proteases (USP) family in particular. Members of the USP family physically interact with NOTCH1 and the lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27) demethylase JMJD3 and this methylation-ubiquitination biology-related axis coordinates regulation of transcriptional initiation and elongation, vital for the survival of leukemia cells. Interestingly transcription of USP genes is positively controlled by NOTCH1 creating a feedback loop in leukemia. We have further characterized this oncogenic axis using a combination of small molecule inhibitors and genetic engineering of USPs in ALL cell lines, primary patient samples and primagraft models of disease. We are able to show that a) USP activity is important for certain oncogenic pathways (such as NOTCH1) in leukemia; b) Oncogenes and USP enzymes co-bind certain areas in the leukemia genome; c) Ubiquitination of histone H2B acts in a combinatorial fashion with H3K27me, is a major epigenetic change affected by the USP activity in leukemia and controls d) transcriptional elongation. Finally we demonstrate that f) chemical inhibition or down-regulation of USPs affect leukemia growth in vitro and in vivo. Ongoing and future studies include manipulation of USP levels in mouse models of leukemia as well as combinatorial use of USP inhibitors with chemotherapeutic regiments in vitro using matched diagnosis-relapsed primary samples and in xenograft studies. Information gained from these studies will lend rationale towards the use of small molecule inhibitors against USP proteins in clinical trials for the treatment of aggressive and relapsed ALL. In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in studying non-contact methods for full-field displacement and strain measurement. Among such techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has received particular attention, thanks to its ability to provide these information by comparing digital images of a sample surface before and after deformation. The method is now commonly adopted in the field of civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering and different companies and some research groups implemented 2D and 3D DIC software. In this work a review on DIC software status is given at first. Moreover, a free and open source 2D DIC software is presented, named py2DIC and developed in Python at the Geodesy and Geomatics Division of DICEA of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”; its potentialities were evaluated by processing the images captured during tensile tests performed in the Structural Engineering Lab of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and comparing them to those obtained using the commercial software Vic-2D developed by Correlated Solutions Inc, USA. The agreement of these results at one hundredth of millimetre level demonstrate the possibility to use this open source software as a valuable 2D DIC tool to measure full-field displacements on the investigated sample surface.

Abstract Surgical navigation-assisted interventions, providing augmented previously acquired image data to support the physician, are routinely used. Visualization techniques like extended reality (XR) promise improvements because the desired information can be shown where most suitable. The accuracy of such systems is essential for usability in clinical interventions but lacks research. This work shows a system to project thermal data for use in reconstructive surgery and investigates the accuracy of the XR technology. The system consists of a thermal camera (PI450, Optris GmbH, Germany), a depth camera system (D415, Intel Inc., USA), and a HoloLens2 (Microsoft Corp., USA). 5 probands annotated the locations of 9 marker points on a calibration pattern of the real object and the projection in the XR headset. The mean and max residual projection errors were 2.8 and 6.2 mm, respectively. An XR system to superimpose thermal images was shown. The mean projection error of 2.8 mm is sufficient for further exploration of medical applications.

This article discusses it has become a basic assumption that prices do not rise but instead they should fall in the economics of electronic products. It was precisely to meet customers’ expectations of lower prices that a Canadian manufacturer went to an essentially mechanical redesign of a telecommunications device. Nortel’s work on the redesign followed the principles of a system called DFMA, or design for manufacture and assembly, a design analysis tool developed by Boothroyd Dewhurst Inc., Wakefield, RI. It enables product designers to pinpoint parts and assemblies that add unnecessary costs to a product, and then design to avoid them. DFMA is designed to give engineers a structured way to evaluate ease of assembly and the overall manufacturability of a product. Design for assembly requires the user to assess whether each part is necessary, and to consider the time and cost of assembling the product. Design for manufacture integrates information about manufacturing processes, allowing users to estimate manufacturing costs and make informed decisions about materials.

This article explains why an appeals court felt the need to reinterpret a disclosure rule that had caused an explosion of paperwork in patent-related cases. In May 2011, the Federal Circuit, in the case of Therasense Inc. v. Becton Dickinson & Co. involving blood glucose test strip technology, changed the standards for proving inequitable conduct. Following this change, a withheld reference must invalidate the patent in order to be material and support a charge of inequitable conduct. A withheld reference that merely presents an argument for invalidity fails as grounds for a charge of inequitable conduct. So long as the non-cited article does not disclose or render obvious the patented invention, the article is not material. Even if the article is material, that alone is not enough. The accused patent violator must also prove that the reference was knowingly and deliberately withheld. The patentee does not have to provide an explanation for the missing information.

BACKGROUND: Due to their corrugated profile, dragonfly wings have special aerodynamic characteristics during flying and gliding. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to create a realistic 3D model of a dragonfly wing captured with a high-resolution micro-CT. To represent geometry changes in span and chord length and their aerodynamic effects, numerical investigations are carried out at different wing positions. METHODS: The forewing of a Camacinia gigantea was captured using a micro-CT. After the wing was adapted an error-free 3D model resulted. The wing was cut every 5 mm and 2D numerical analyses were conducted in Fluent® 2020 R2 (ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). RESULTS: The highest lift coefficient, as well as the highest lift-to-drag ratio, resulted at 0 mm and an angle of attack (AOA) of 5∘. At AOAs of 10∘ or 15∘, the flow around the wing stalled and a Kármán vortex street behind the wing becomes visible. CONCLUSIONS: The velocity is higher on the upper side of the wing compared to the lower side. The pressure acts vice versa. Due to the recirculation zones that are formed in valleys of the corrugation pattern the wing resembles the form of an airfoil.

The use of information modeling tools at all stages of the life cycle of a capital construction object allows you to analyze design information in order to make the most correct decision, while significantly reducing the uncertainty of processes by increasing the amount of data available for analysis. One of the labor-intensive processes at the design stage is the selection of the most suitable structural elements, including translucent structures. As part of the work, the normative and reference information related to the calculation of the heat-shielding characteristics of building structures has been analyzed, scientific developments and publications devoted to the automation of the implementation of heat engineering calculations using various software tools are considered. For the purpose of the study, two indicators were calculated: the normalized value of the reduced heat transfer resistance and the reduced heat transfer resistance of the window. To solve the problem, such automation tools as the Dynamo visual programming tool and the Python programming language were used, with the help of which a script was developed for calculating the thermal performance of windows for use in Autodesk Revit (Autodesk, Inc., USA). As part of the study, it was determined that the combined use of the Dynamo visual programming tool and the Python text programming tool, expanding the functionality of Autodesk Revit, made it possible to automate the task of calculating the reduced heat transfer resistance of a window and the normalized heat transfer resistance, taking into account conditions of a specific construction region.

This work focused on the problem of finding a suitable medium access control protocol so that the nodes of a given cluster could communicate efficiently within their respective activity window. The nodes thus saved energy by turning off their transceivers during the time that they did not have to exchange information. This works main objective was to ensure that the nodes were mainly focused on energy efficiency and delivering packages, taking quality of service (QoS) requirements into account and comparing their performance to an existing protocol called sensor medium access control (S-MAC). The parameters being compared were the time that the nodes were asleep, energy consumption and average delay. This work was completed by using the OPNET simulator tool (OPNET Modeler, version 11.5.A PL3, OPNET Technologies Company Inc). This approach greatly improved the "PCF + Sleep” performance proposed in this work over the earlier S-MAC.

Metal structural plates are extensively used in various engineering structures due to their high strength, high-temperature resistance, toughness, and plasticity. However, they are susceptible to damage from external loads and impacts over time. The current Lamb wave detection methods suffer from dispersion and multimodal effects, leading to ineffective identification of damage information. In this paper, we investigate Lamb wave propagation in steel structure plates with flat-bottomed holes using a sinusoidal modulation five-peak wave signal. Finite element numerical models are developed, and an experimental platform is constructed using steel and aluminum boards. Experimental data is collected using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV, PSV-500, Polytec Inc., Baden-Württemberg, German). The results demonstrate that, under the same frequency, the damage reflection energy for different modes is distinct. By fusing the data from the two modes, more accurate damage imaging results are obtained in the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) domain compared to single-mode imaging. Furthermore, experiments are conducted to locate damage in a steel board with a through hole and an aluminum plate with double flat-bottomed holes, confirming the feasibility of the proposed algorithm in isotropic plates.

This paper examines the vibrations of a rail span (rail section between two consecutive sleepers) during and after the passage of a rail car’s wheel as well as under impact hammer excitation. In literature, the dynamic response of railway tracks under moving loads has been studied extensively. Many of these studies focus on the responses in relation to displacement/force-time histories and wave propagation parameters. These responses are investigated for the time instants when rail car wheels transverse over the rail spans of interest. In this context, an investigation of responses in relation to modal parameters during and after moving loads might provide additional information. Such information can be used to examine how the loading and additional masses induced by the moving wheels affect the dynamic responses. To this end, field tests were carried out at Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI) facility in Colorado, U.S. First, to find the flexural modes of a rail span under no loading, data was collected from three accelerometers placed on the span under vertical impact hammer excitation. Next, the accelerometers were placed underneath the rail span, and data was collected while a rail car traveled over the span. The signal segments corresponding to during and after a wheel passage were analyzed for the identification of modal parameters. The comparison of the results demonstrated that the frequencies of the rail span increased as the loading induced by the wheel increased.

The fixed partial denture produced by conventional method is greatly relied on the skill and experience of dental technician. Its quality and accuracy depends mostly on the technician's subjective judgment. In addition, the manual process involves many procedures that require a long time to complete. Most important, it does not preserve any quantitative information for future retrieval. In this article, a new device for scanning denture images and reconstructing 3D digital information of dental model by abrasive computer tomography (ACT) was designed in-house and proposed. The fixed partial denture was then produced by the rapid prototyping (RP) and computer numerical control (CNC) machining methods based on ACT scanned digital information. A force feedback sculptor (FreeForm system, Sensible Technologies Inc., USA) accompany with 3D Touch technology was applied to modify the morphology design of denture. It enables the dentist to perform digital manipulation of denture profile with real-time and user-friendly human interactive operation without relying on CAD/CAM technician or dental technician. In this article, the comparison of conventional manual operation and digital manufacture using both RP and CNC machining technologies for denture production was presented. In addition, a digital custom denture manufacturing protocol integrating proposed computer abrasive teeth profile scanning, computer-aided denture design, 3D touchable force feedback feature modification and advanced denture manufacturing techniques were suggested. These proposed methods provide solid evidence that digital design and manufacturing technologies may become a new avenue for custom-made denture design, analysis, and production in 21th century.

The only feasible strategy to minimize pollution from offshore installations is to control the chemicals used. Chemicals are normally only used in response to observed operational problems. They are used in a large number of application areas, and an extensive list of application areas exists. Only a small fraction of chemicals used will eventually reach the marine environment, mainly depending on the water solubility of the chemicals. Since the chemicals discharged are diluted in large quantities of water before and immediately after discharge, the acute toxic effects are considered as not very severe. However, chronic ecotoxicological effects and long-term problems may arise due to accumulation within the marine food chain. Unfortunately, very little information is available on environmental effects of offshore chemicals. However, the harmonizing work which has started within the EEC, requires that new environmental regulations include ecotoxicological data in the classification of chemicals. This important information can be a valuable tool so that operating companies can select alternative chemicals suitable to their operational needs. There is, however, still a need to continue research to develop a suitable methodology to determine possible long-term environmental effects of low solubility chemicals. This paper introduces a research project initiated by Conoco Norway Inc. late 1989.

For real-time acoustic source localization applications, one of the primary challenges is the considerable growth in computational complexity associated with the emergence of ever larger, active or passive, distributed sensor networks. These sensors rely heavily on battery-operated system components to achieve highly functional automation in signal and information processing. In order to keep communication requirements minimal, it is desirable to perform as much processing on the receiver platforms as possible. However, the complexity of the calculations needed to achieve accurate source localization increases dramatically with the size of sensor arrays, resulting in substantial growth of computational requirements that cannot be readily met with standard hardware. One option to meet this challenge builds upon the emergence of digital optical-core devices. The objective of this work was to explore the implementation of key building block algorithms used in underwater source localization on the optical-core digital processing platform recently introduced by Lenslet Inc. This demonstration of considerably faster signal processing capability should be of substantial significance to the design and innovation of future generations of distributed sensor networks.

Assessing scapular position and motion during functional arm movement patterns may add relevant information to the evaluation of the clinical status and athletic performance of overhead sports athletes’ shoulders. This study aimed to examine the three-dimensional scapular kinematics of elite volleyball players with (n = 11) and without scapular dyskinesis (n = 11) in comparison to non-athletes (n = 27). Four distinct arm elevation/depression tasks were assessed: shoulder abduction/adduction, flexion/extension, scaption, and a diagonal movement pattern mimicking throwing (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation diagonal 2 for flexion/extension or PNF–D2–flx/ext). Kinematic data was recorded from the spiking/dominant shoulder using an electromagnetic system (FASTRAK, Polhemus Inc., Colchester, VT, USA); MotionMonitor v9 software, Innovative Sports Training, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The study compared scapular rotations at 15° intervals of humero-thoracic (HT) angles, ranging from minimum to 120°. Significantly different 3D scapular kinematics were observed between traditional arm motion tasks and PNF–D2 arm motion task (HT angle × task interaction effect, p < 0.001, 0.275 ≤ ηp2 ≤ 0.772). However, when considering the combined influence of phase, HT angle, task, and group factors, no differences were found between groups (phase × HT angle × task × group, p ≥ 0.161, 0.032 ≤ ηp2 ≤ 0.058). The inclusion of a functional arm movement pattern when evaluating scapular position and movement in overhead athletes does not appear to be mandatory. However, these findings are preliminary and highlight the need for more research in this area.

Safe navigation in restricted waters continues to be a perennial concern for shipowners, operators, navigators, and citizens. Much research has been conducted in order to determine the most efficient and effective methods for improving the safety of navigation and for training ships' officers and pilots. Decision aids improving the safety of navigation and supporting the cognitive skills of piloting—maneuvering, collision avoidance, and the practice of good seamanship—are of substantial interest. These decision aids can be standalone systems or embedded within an integrated bridge system or electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), and can exhibit the properties of a real time knowledge-based control system. Following the March 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) began the development of a real time expert system, the Shipboard Piloting Expert System (SPES). The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science Inc. (CUAHSI) hydrologic information system (HIS) is a widely used service oriented system for time series data management. While this system is intended to empower the hydrologic sciences community with better data storage and distribution, it lacks support for the kind of ‘Web 2.0’ collaboration and social-networking capabilities being used in other fields. This paper presents the design, development, and testing of a software extension of CUAHSI's newest product, HydroShare. The extension integrates the existing CUAHSI HIS into HydroShare's social hydrology architecture. With this extension, HydroShare provides integrated HIS time series with efficient archiving, discovery, and retrieval of the data, extensive creator and science metadata, scientific discussion and collaboration around the data and other basic social media features. HydroShare provides functionality for online social interaction and collaboration while the existing HIS provides the distributed data management and web services framework. The extension is expected to enable scientists to access and share both national- and laboratory-scale hydrologic time series datasets in a standards-based web services architecture combined with social media functionality developed specifically for the hydrologic sciences.

The model Pencel pressuremeter (PPMT), manufactured by Roctest, Inc is used to perform PPMT tests in various soils to allow engineers to more precisely carry out the consistent tests. Therefore, the control unit of the PPMT has been implemented to allow recording digital pressures and volumes. This digital information is now obtained through a standalone software package, called Automated Pressuremeter (APMT) that incorporates the required calibrations to provide engineers with instantaneous reduced data along with pertinent engineering strength and stiffness properties. The study objective is to simplify test data, reduction and analysis which lead to significant time saving. Several tests data for sands and clays were performed for accuracy and incorporated in the comparison. A linear potentiometer was connected directly to the piston to produce digital volumes, while, a digital pressure transducer was coupled into the control unit. For each injected volume increment the pressure versus time data was estimated to determine when the pressures stabilized. APMT indicated that the pressure stabilized between 10 and 80 seconds for soils evaluated. The volume increment stabilization period was defined as the time required for the pressures to stabilize. This digital equipment enhanced the precision of the pressures more than ten fold and eliminated gear backlash associated with the existing volume counter.

This article discusses the causes and provides examples of the emergence of new and updated terms in the English language in such areas of human production as telecommunications, information technology management in the field of transport, administration, building supply chains, and programming. It should be noted that the number of new terms is relatively small, which is due either to the emergence of completely new technologies requiring new terms, or the development of existing technologies that give rise to the so-called updated terms. Such a phenomenon is, in our opinion, of interest from a linguistic point of view, which is the subject of the analysis. This article gives examples of completely unique ways of creating new terms, where, for example, two companies create a new program, and the name of this program becomes the name of a new technology, and at the same time a new term for this technology. We are talking about the term 3D Xpoint and the joint development of Intel and Micron Technology Inc. It should be noted that the processes of automation and robotization taking place in industry lead to mass layoffs of workers and employees, a reduction in the number of productive forces, social tension in society, which will undoubtedly lead to an update and the emergence of new terminology that reflects this phenomenon in the social sphere of society life. Undoubtedly, English is one of the most commonly used in the field of information technology, and its vocabulary is widely used in the creation of new terms, abbreviations used in the communication of IT specialists in many countries of the world, these terms accelerate and improve the quality of communication of IT specialists from different countries of the world working in the same field of activity. This is precisely the topic of the article below — an analysis of the emergence of new and updating old terms in the field of information technology, contributing to an increase in the language level and quality of work of specialists in the field of intellectual technologies and the industrial sphere of society.

ARCO Marine currently operates ten tankers which move crude oil from Valdez, Alaska to West Coast ports of the United States. These tankers range in size from 70 000 to 265 000 dwt and operate throughout the year in the harsh environment of the North Pacific Ocean. All of the ships have experienced fatigue and slamming related structural damage. Fatigue damage of structural details occurs from cyclic loading as the ship hull girder flexes in response to the seaway. Damage to local bow structure results from slamming, which is a high magnitude impulse load that induces a high frequency response in the hull girder. Because of this high frequency response, slamming also contributes significantly to fatigue damage. With the goal of minimizing this structural damage, ARCO Marine initiated the Hull Monitoring Program with Ocean Systems Inc. in mid-1992 to develop an onboard computer-based Decision Support System (DSS) that conveys information to the shipmaster to aid in avoiding encounters with ship damaging seas. There are three basic sources of information to the DSS: weather forecasting, analytic and empirical seakeeping computations, and instrumentation feedback. An instrumentation package was installed on the ARCO California and continuously recorded ship motion and hull girder responses throughout its five 1992/93 winter voyages. Analysis of the recorded data resulted in several significant findings that validate the need for an onboard DSS. The Hull Monitoring Program built on the success of the 1990 ARCO Tanker Slamming Study [1] and has resulted in the conceptual design of a prototype DSS ready for implementation during the 1993/94 winter voyages. This paper describes the 1992/93 instrumentation package and data acquisition process, presents many of the significant findings, introduces the concept of improved passage planning, and discusses plans for the onboard implementation of the prototype system.
