Objectives and methodAlthough it is increasingly an immigrant country, we can not forget that for years has been a world leader as a meeting place of many nationalities. It has carried out a review of the literature about the number of suicides that occur in the immigrant population of our country.ResultsCultural factors that influence suicidal behavior are religion, socio-demographic factors (inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and suicide attempts), conflicts, alcohol/drugs, and social and family support as emigration entails fostering emotional and cultural rootlessness isolation and increased risk. Stresses in young Filipinos (20%) and American Indians (19%) than for any other ethnic group. Among the immigrants, I returned to their country of origin, the Germans have a 30% rate of suicides. And if we consider the length of stay, a clear decrease in rates seen since the frequent change of residence results in an increased risk. In the comparison of nationality and gender, it shows that the rate for suicides is very high among Moroccan women aged between 10 and 24 years. Conclusions and discussionMigration can alter the development and adaptation of people and sometimes increase the risk of suicide especially when migration occurs alone. Attempted suicide is an exceptional crisis that requires special attention. Progress in research will deepen the psychological effects of migration in adults and in children migrated.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

This article analyses the problem of immigration. In the process of globalization, the countries are forced to solve the issues of emigration, declining birth rates, and populating ageing. Therefore, immigration may be beneficial as the immigrating people help to create economic potential by filling vacancies. However, the acceptance of immigrants and their integration often leads to debates and confronts the members of society. The methods of research: analysis of scientific literature and documents, expert interview, analysis and interpretation of the research results. The review of scientific literature and the research data, presented in this article, may be adapted for improvement of the social integration factors, while considering the way the needs of immigrants are met and the integration measures that are provided. The research has revealed the key factors, influencing the social integration of immigrants in social enterprises.

This article examines the historical and social contexts of South Asian immigration and their current socioeconomic and educational outcomes in the United States. Based on an adapted model of incorporation and literature review, this historical analysis examines government policies, societal reception, co-ethnic communities, as well as other barriers and opportunities of three immigration waves before and after the Immigration Act of 1965. The study reveals the modes of incorporation differed for each immigrant wave as well as subsequent socioeconomic and educational outcomes within the South Asian community. Before 1965, the earliest migrants had several barriers to incorporation coupled with government and societal hostility. After 1965, South Asians began immigrating under more favorable or neutral modes of incorporation. They were also more wealthy, educated, fluent in English, and had professional skills. While the majority of South Asians today represent this demographic composition, a rising subgroup of immigrants arriving under differential circumstances since the 1980s are facing more unique challenges within this community.

This paper examines the life and experiences of a 19th-century immigrant from the British Isles to the United States and his family. It examines his reasons for immigrating, as well as his experiences after arrival. In this case, the immigrant chose to create a new identity for himself after immigration. Doing so both severed his ties with his birth family and left his American progeny without a clear sense of identity and heritage. The essay uses a variety of sources, including oral history and folklore, to investigate the immigrant’s origins and examine how this uncertainty shaped the family’s history in the 19th and 20th centuries. New methodologies centering on DNA analysis have recently offered insights into the family’s past. The essay ends by positing a birth identity for the family’s immigrant ancestor. Importantly, the family’s post-immigration experiences reveal that the immigrant and his descendants made a deliberate effort to retain aspects of their pre-immigration past across both time and distance. These actions underscore a growing body of literature on the limits of post-immigration assimilation by immigrants and their families, and indicate the value of genealogical study for analyzing the immigrant experience.

Abstract Primary Subject area Global Child and Youth Health Background Children immigrating to Canada may face racism and xenophobia depending on their ethno-racial background and immigration status. In Canada, immigration statuses include economic or family immigrants, resettled government or privately sponsored refugees, or asylum seekers, while some have no formal immigration status, otherwise considered undocumented. Research supporting newcomer child health should account for their immigration status and ethno-racial identity to capture the impact of discrimination. Objectives To critically examine the reporting of ethno-racial data and immigration status in published literature on the health needs of newcomer children to Canada. Design/Methods An integrative scoping review was performed, using the methodological framework outlined by Arksey & O’Malley. A literature search in Medline, PsycINFO, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Central for articles published until July 2019 was conducted. Inclusion criteria were original research studies on newcomer children (0-18 years) in Canada in English or French from 2009 onwards. After undergoing title and abstract review, we extracted descriptions of participant immigration status and ethno-racial identity. Results 4147 articles were identified. After removal of duplicates, 2632 articles underwent title and abstract review, with a kappa-statistic of 0.93, suggesting high inter-rater agreement. Seventy-five studies were included in the final analysis. Overall, there were no consistent descriptions of immigration status or ethno-racial identity. Of the 75 articles included for final analysis, only 27% (20/75) described their participants’ immigration status in some capacity; the majority (75%) of these did not separate out participants by their immigration status (15/20) and of these, 67% combined all types of refugee and economic immigrant statuses together (10/15). With respect to ethno-racial data, the majority of studies (65%, 49/75) did not report on their participants’ ethno-racial identities. Of those that did, 65% (17/26) reported their participants’ ethnicity alone, while only 15% (4/26) reported their race alone and 19% (5/26) reported both race and ethnicity. Conclusion Our scoping review demonstrates that many studies focusing on newcomer children to Canada do not consistently collect and analyze their participants’ immigration status or ethno-racial identity. In doing so, studies may falsely conflate the experiences of newcomer children and ignore the impact of racism and xenophobia on their access to care, leading to worsening stigma and access to care. We suggest that research that often informs evidence-based guidelines for newcomer children should consider immigration status and ethno-racial identity to consider the impact of xenophobia and racism and improve health outcomes.

E-government in Indonesia is still developing particularly in some regional and central government offices. As a central government, the directorate general of immigration has been implemented very well in relation to the process of providing immigration documents such as passports, visas, and permission to stay for foreigners. However, in the field of law enforcement the directorate general of immigration have failed to demonstrate the development phase of e-government. The official website of the directorate general of immigration does not provide any information related to immigration law enforcement so that the legal awareness of the public about the dangers of violating immigration law is not well conveyed. Even the public does not know the investigation process if they commit immigration violations. Also, the agency did not provide both financial and nonfinancial access for the public to avoid immigration violations. All coordination activities are still done manually. The data used in this study is secondary data collected from academic literature and grey literature. The research materials were obtained by using search engines from google, google scholar, and an online library at flinders university.

The paper explores the role of radical right parties in the politicization of immigration. In scholarly literature, radical right parties are viewed as the owners of the immigration issue and as drivers of its politicization. Against this prevalent view, we argue that the significance of radical right parties in politicizing immigration is overrated: (1) Radical right parties only play a subordinate role in the politicization of immigration, whereas the contribution of mainstream parties to raising issue salience has been underestimated; (2) the politicization of immigration is not related to radical right strength in the party system. The findings are based on media data from a comparative project on public claims-making on immigration in Western European countries (SOM, Support and Opposition to Migration). We discuss our findings in comparison to the relevant literature and suggest avenues for further research.

In an age when politicians and the mainstream media continue to divide immigrants into deserving and undeserving subjects, making them both hypervisible and yet invisible, the essays by Lauret, Krause and Schreiber are timely and compelling. Together, they map the historical and contemporary processes of state violence, legal erasure and cultural coercion that have shaped immigrant lives and subjectivities. Models of cultural conformity and whiteness, hyphenation, and either/or binaries that enforce the strict separation of old and new, legal and illegal, have affected the immigrant psyche and induced forms of individual and collective trauma, including ethnic shame, madness, family fragmentation and the physical exploitation of human bodies. In their essays on Americanization and Dominican American fiction, Lauret and Krause reveal the less than celebratory narratives that get lost in stories of emancipatory assimilation, ethnic persistence and hyphenated and multiple subjectivities. Likewise, in her essay on contemporary Latino/a music video and undocumented immigration, Schreiber asks us to see what is obscured from view, but also to find room in these new narratives for patterns of immigrant visibility, agency and activism. These essays suggest that immigrant testimony, literature and visual and aural media can be powerfully combined with historical analyses of immigration policy to unravel the complex realities behind the walls of national nostalgia and racial stereotyping. They also suggest alternative ways of seeing that demand we recognize every immigrant's right to humanity and a sense of belonging.

Abstract Since the early 1990s, Greek migration policies have been characterized by limited pathways to regularization and relying heavily on immigration detention. Despite many studies about Greece’s legal framework, policies, and migration movements towards the country, immigration detention infrastructure received almost no attention in the literature. This study reconstructs the expansion of immigration detention in the country between 1993-2018. It uses a methodology based on an analysis of reports made by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT), whose descriptions of facilities were systematized and georeferenced for a territorial and qualitative analysis. We find that the expansion of immigration detention infrastructure in the country occurred in three stages, corresponding to different spatial tactics of migration control. The results are discussed in light of the growing literature on immigration detention.

AbstractAcross Western Europe, parties have emerged that are both right wing and in favour of restrictions on immigration. These parties are commonly referred to in terms of either ideology (e.g. ‘far right’) or policy (‘anti-immigration’). This article compares far right parties, selected on the basis of their ideologies, and anti-immigration parties, selected based on their immigration policies. I argue and empirically demonstrate that, contrary to what the extant literature suggests, these sets of parties are not identical. I point out similarities and differences, showing why it is useful to distinguish between these two types of party. The article concludes by discussing the relevance of these differences to the relevant literature.

AbstractDo increasing, and increasingly diverse, immigration flows lead to declining support for redistributive policy? This concern is pervasive in the literatures on immigration, multiculturalism and redistribution, and in public debate as well. The literature is nevertheless unable to disentangle the degree to which welfare chauvinism is related to (a) immigrant status or (b) ethnic difference. This paper reports on results from a web-based experiment designed to shed light on this issue. Representative samples from the United States, Quebec, and the “Rest-of-Canada” responded to a vignette in which a hypothetical social assistance recipient was presented as some combination of immigrant or not, and Caucasian or not. Results from the randomized manipulation suggest that while ethnic difference matters to welfare attitudes, in these countries it is immigrant status that matters most. These findings are discussed in light of the politics of diversity and recognition, and the capacity of national policies to address inequalities.

Against the background of the declining birth rate and the increasing number of elderly people, the labour market shortage caused by the ageing population puts considerable financial pressure on the welfare state. Previous literature has proposed associated solutions, and opening up immigration policies has received increasing attention as one of the possible approaches. However, there is not enough research to prove how effective immigration actually is in ameliorating the financial pressures of an ageing population on the welfare state. By innovatively introducing the variable of type of welfare state, this paper explores the different preferences of different countries in choosing immigrants as workforces in the face of population ageing. It concludes that immigration has a more pronounced effect on improving the demographics of liberal and conservative welfare states and fills a research gap in the relationship between immigration and the welfare state.

Purpose Many migrants are detained in Europe not because they have committed a crime but because of lack of certainty over their immigration status. Although generally in good physical health on entry to Europe, migrant detainees have complex health needs, often related to mental health. Very little is known about the current health situation and health care needs of migrants when detained in European immigration detention settings. The review aims to synthesize the qualitative literature available on this issue from the perspectives of staff and migrants. Design/methodology/approach The authors undertook a synthesis of extant qualitative literature on migrant health experience and health situation when detained in European immigration detention settings; retrieved as part of a large-scale scoping review. Included records (n = 4) from Sweden and the UK representing both detainee and staff experiences were charted, synthesised and thematically analysed. Findings Three themes emerged from the analysis, namely, conditions in immigration detention settings, uncertainties and communication barriers and considerations of migrant detainee health. Conditions were described as inhumane, resembling prison and underpinned by communication difficulties, lack of adequate nutrition and responsive health care. Practical implications It is crucial that the experiences underpinning migration are understood to respond to the health needs of migrants, uphold their health rights and to ensure equitable access to health care in immigration detention settings. Originality/value There is a dearth of qualitative research in this area because of the difficulty of access to immigration detention settings for migrants. The authors highlight the critical need for further investigation of migrant health needs, so as to inform appropriate staff support and health service responses.

This study aims to analyse the empirical background of securitisation in the European Union (EU). Using panel data, this research covers the period between 2006 and 2018 and analyses 24 EU countries. Copenhagen School claims that securitisation is a speech act of powerful actors. In the case of the EU, politicians and media are the main actors in the securitisation of immigration. In this respect, immigration has been labelled by these actors as a potential threat to the welfare state, European identity, and internal security. Various literature discusses that the securitisation of immigration in the EU has accelerated especially after 9/11. Contrary to the existing literature, this study focuses on the EU to analyse whether the securitisation of immigration has an empirical base. This study’s key finding is that there is no solid empirical result to support the securitisation discourse in the EU to the extent that immigration strongly threatens national security.

The inward mobility of labour can serve as a driver of economic growth and the immigration policies of many countries are orientated towards this end. However immigration is also a contentious issue, with the general public often displaying hostility towards liberal immigration policies. The compromises between economic and political considerations that states make when developing immigration policy are poorly theorised in academic literature. The study contributes to conceptual understandings of the voices of ‘elites’ in the political-economy of immigration policy through a critical interrogation of the narratives and preferences of employers in the context of the ongoing Scottish constitutional change debate.

The effect of the refugee incident between two countries and its effect on shaping the relations has been scrutinized in detail and at the same time positive and negative sides of refugee influx that occurred after the wart hat took place in Syria have been evaluated. The second part deals with efforts put in place to prevent illegal immigrations. Upon this issue, the effect of the taking back deal made between Europe Union and Turkey over Turkish and Greek coastal waters andl imits have been evaluated. Within the relevant section arguments from both countries over illegal immigrants have been seperately dealt with. Finally in the third section, soft security problems such as immigration and their effect on establishing bilateral relations have been studied and also the layer of distrust that underlies the discussion and shapes the result and also the security factors have been added to the literature. Some results have been concluded about adding refugee and illegal immigration issues to the problems that occur around territorial waters and the limits and their effects on bilateral relations. Finally it has been emphasized that relevant immigration incident is being used as a tool of trust or distrust.

Most studies suggest that the fear of immigrants strongly influences public opinion about immigrants and immigration policies in the United States. Despite this knowledge, there is a lack of depth in the literature examining the effect of the fear of immigrants on police stops against undocumented immigrants and immigrants with criminal backgrounds. The present study fills this void in the literature by examining the effect of public fear of immigrants on public support for policing immigrants, specifically, undocumented immigrants with a criminal record, while controlling for other factors. Results from the regression analysis suggest that fear of immigrants, illustrated in exclusionary immigration policies, coupled with some socio-demographic factors, influence public attitude towards police stops against undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Theoretically, the present study fills a gap in the existing literature on the fear of immigrants, immigration, and policing, by exclusively focusing on undocumented immigrants with a criminal record. Policy-wise, the findings of these studies can be useful in developing more pragmatic and inclusionary immigration policies void of sentiments.

This study aims to discuss the need for enhancing the response system regarding illegal immigration and emigration through maritime routes. The research methodology involves analyzing literature and official data to explore the concepts and characteristics related to illegal immigration. Additionally, I attempted to make suggestions on recent changes in crime methods and countermeasures using press releases. The summary of the characteristics and changes of illegal immigration and emigration are as follows. First, the motivations and purposes behind illegal immigration and emigration are diverse. Second, within the context of environmental changes, illegal immigration techniques have diversified in terms of routes, means, and evasion tactics. Suggestions regarding countermeasures against illegal immigration and emigration are as follows. First, effective management requires understanding the root causes and motivations behind illegal immigration and emigration. Second, urgent development of surveillance and enforcement technologies is necessary. Third, regular updates and improvements to laws and regulations are essential. Fourth, establishing collaboration systems involving both domestic and international partners is crucial.

The increasing threat of globalization, both traditional and non-traditional, has become a particular concern for the Indonesian government; the rapid and widespread development of the world economy has made policies related to free markets and investment huge. The research method used by the author is a qualitative method with a literature review approach. The author uses secondary data to analyze the results, namely, primary, secondary, and tertiary materials. The results of the study stated that: The Directorate General of Immigration is present as the executor of duties and functions in the field of immigration. The chess of the immigration function is the basis for carrying out the duties and functions carried out by the directorate general of immigration. This writing is intended to explain the process of immigration in the state security sector; immigration has a vital role in maintaining state sovereignty.

The literature suggests that Spain has never had a national identity but is rather an amalgam of regional identities. The accession to the European Union and the arrival of immigrants present new challenges to Spanish identity. Forging a national identity entails both building a solidarity based on ‘belongingness’ and excluding certain groups that might constitute a threat. These contemporary forms of exclusion aligned with immigration can be referred to as neo-racist.

The history of Latino farmworkers in the United States is long and complex. Economic forces and often-contradictory immigration policies have given rise to patterns of undocumented immigration from Mexico and Central America by individuals and families looking for work. This review uses a Critical Multiculturalism lens to explore the incidence of depression in Latino farmworkers; the link between depression symptoms and the experience of migration, acculturation, poverty, and agricultural work; and the role of culture, structural issues, primary care providers’ inadequate training in mental health issues, and work conditions in the under-detection of depression in this population. Recommendations for clinicians and researchers are offered to improve detection of depression in Latino farmworkers.

AbstractImmigration has unquestionably gained importance in Italian public opinion over the past few years; but what has been its effect on politics? Building on a recent trend in literature, this paper appraises the effect of immigration on the success of far-right parties. We analyze the results of the elections from 2001, when immigration was still marginal, to the last elections held in 2018. Applying time-series-cross-section methods to an original dataset, we find that immigration has had a consistent effect on votes for the far-right. Interestingly, we also show that economic factors likely weigh more on far-right votes than immigration.

Abstract This article adds to the large literature on right-wing populist parties (RWPP), explaining how anti-immigrant sentiments become salient for vote choice. Within the large literature on RWPP, anti-immigration attitudes are the most important variable to explain the vote share of RWPP. Yet, recent research shows that there is not always an empirical effect between having anti-immigrant attitudes and voting for the RWPP. In this article, we develop a theoretical model that explains the conditions under which anti-immigration attitudes matter. We then test this model based on the case of the AfD in Germany, a typical case for a right-wing populist party exploiting anti-immigrant sentiment. Focusing on the AfD in Germany, we illustrate that the refugee crisis in 2015 in combination with a perception of high government unresponsiveness to stop the crisis provided the structural conditions necessary to activate latent anti-immigration sentiment among large parts of the population. Using a structural analysis and individual panel data for Germany’s general elections in 2013 and 2017, we find that immigration critical attitudes were already present among parts of the population in 2013 but immigration was a secondary topic in the 2013 election, even among AfD voters. Due to the immigration crisis in 2015, immigration became a salient topic. The combination of a perceived external crisis or shock combined with a perceived government’s unresponsiveness quickly offered a winning formula for the AfD. A probability probe for two other countries (Sweden and Italy) with different contexts also show salience for the model.

The current study makes several contributions to the extant literature on the relationship between immigration and neighborhood crime. I review classical and contemporary theories and argue that these theories make contradictory predictions regarding the moderating effects of ethnic heterogeneity on the immigration and crime relationship. Previous immigration and crime studies cannot help adjudicate between these positions because they have only considered diversity as a mediator or a control variable. I use multiple measures of diversity to conduct the first comprehensive study of the moderating effects of ethnic heterogeneity on the immigration and violent crime relationship at the neighborhood level. The results indicate that greater diversity strengthens the protective effect of immigrant residential concentration. These findings contradict the assumptions of classical theories and support the more recent immigration and crime perspectives.

In the context of the evidence presented in both the collected scholarship under review and other select works, this article asks if and to what extent migration-related issues have been securitized in Europe and the United States. In addressing these questions it executes three tasks. First, it critically assesses the four major dimensions across which contemporary immigration purportedly is securitized: on one side, rhetorically addressing immigration-related issues through political elite discourse, public opinion, and the mass media; and on the other, the policy processes through which immigration is securitized. Second, this article identifies the strengths and weaknesses of securitization theory as it has been applied to immigration. Finally, it draws mostly negative conclusions about the veracity of the central claims of the securitization of immigration literature and, specifically, its causal story.

One of the reasons why people hold anti-immigration attitudes is the fear that immigrants “rob jobs” of natives and decrease wages. However, academic literature finds that this is not the case. Nevertheless, in various countries, people still tend to oppose immigration. Opposition to immigration was particularly high in Turkey in the early 2000s, where almost half of the respondents to the Turkish part of the European Social Survey reported they would prefer to allow no immigrants into Turkey. This is although immigration to Turkey is very low. Turkey is becoming an important destination country as conflicts in neighboring countries force many people to flee. Therefore, understanding the opposition to immigration in Turkey is crucial for managing age immigration flows efficiently. For this purpose, we investigate the determinants of attitudes towards immigration in Turkey using the European Social Survey and Turkish population census data. The findings of the ordered probit model reveal that Turkish people tend to hold more negative attitudes towards immigration where the regional share of immigrants is higher. The little chance of contact with immigrants in Turkey through a lower share of immigrants compared to other European countries seems to influence natives’ pro-immigrant attitudes negatively.

Abstract At the height of the Great Depression, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) legalized nearly two thousand undocumented Russian immigrants under the Act of June 8, 1934. Based on a random sample of their two thousand case files, “Sovereign Mercy: The Legalization of the White Russian Refugees and the Politics of Immigration Relief” narrates a forgotten moment in the history of undocumented immigration, immigration legalization, and refugee law and policy in the United States. The article specifically argues that even though these Russians were defined as refugees under international law and perceived as such by the public, their American defenders deliberately recast them as undocumented immigrants to halt their deportations to the Soviet Union and give them a pathway to citizenship. This history of the Russian refugees illuminates the conditions under which various forms of immigration relief, such as legalization and the grant of refugee status, emerged in American immigration law. As such, it fills a major gap in the scholarly literature that, to date, has provided few accounts of the history of immigration relief.

Monitoring international human mobility through cross-border countries in terms of immigration has various implications for a country's survival. Immigration has a vital function in supervising and implementing the law on the traffic of foreign nationals and inhabitants of their own country in order to compensate for the threat that enters a country's territory. Immigration law enforcement is carried out both administratively and pro-judicially in its application. An Immigration Civil Servant Investigator (PPNS) is constituted in the Immigration Office to carry out its role and to deal with immigration offences that arise. This study is a descriptive analytical study of the flaws discovered with the juridical normative method employed by gathering and analyzing the literature sources gathered. Immigration Civil Servant Investigators are legally liable for their investigative acts in line with the applicable rules and regulations when conducting investigations, while official responsibilities are carried out hierarchically. Article 105 of Law Number 6 of 2011 establishes the presence of civil servant investigators, which certifies that immigration investigators are authorized to examine immigration offences committed in line with the terms of this Law. However, in its implementation, PPNS Immigration can collaborate with the National Police to carry out supervision, investigation, and investigation to optimize its supervisory and law enforcement tasks in order to help carry out both preventive and repressive law enforcement in order to build a conducive legal order

This paper aims to find out the national security threats that may occur with the presence of foreigners in Indonesia and the supervision of foreigners according to the immigration law in the face of potential national security threats in Indonesia. The writing of this paper uses a normative juridical approach, which is a method for studying theories, legal principles, and laws and regulations relevant to research. The data collection method used is literature study. The author conducted a literature study of laws and regulations, immigration journals, and books related to immigration. Data analysis uses qualitative normative data analysis techniques. The results of this study show that the potential security threat of Indonesia with foreigners is a form of transnational organized crime (TOC), such as Cyber Crime, Human Trafficking, terrorism, drug trafficking, and money laundering (Money Laundry). The form of immigration supervision that can be carried out due to the potential threat is administrative supervision and field supervision. In addition, to develop the advancement of science and technology, the existence of a Foreigner Reporting Application (APOA) is targeted at hotel or lodging management to provide their access waivers. APOA serves to provide reports regarding the presence of foreigners to the local immigration office. Another form of immigration supervision is the presence of the TIMPORA ForeignEr Supervision Team assigned with the aim of supervising and cracking down on foreign nationals in indonesia's administrative regions
