abstract: This essay examines Eric Overmyer's 1988 play On the Verge: or the Geography of Yearning in the context of the Imaginary Voyage, through the ways that imaginative travel functioned as a tool of empowerment and identity construction for 19th-century women. Using texts such as Herodotus's Histories and Strabo's Geographies as well as Victorian women travel-writers like Lucie Duff Gordon and Mary Kingsley as lenses to examine Overmyer's language-centric comedy, the article positions the play within the framework of the Imaginary Voyage and provides a road map for the creative imagination required for a contemporary feminist journey.

AbstractThe scientific debate which developed during the eighteenth century, proposed and diffused new theories on the generation not only within the scientific community. Microscopic investigation and various experimental campaigns fostered daring models attempting to unveil the natural phenomena from which life originates. Besides the famous scientific and philosophical works that marked the age, in the second part of the century two pamphlets appeared that well represent the importance of the querelle about embryological systems defining the concept of generation as a voyage within the human body. Lucina sine concubitu and Juno abortans, respectively published in England and in Germany between 1750 and 1760, narrate the odd and imaginary adventures of two doctors who are trying to interrupt and modify the embryos' journey towards the body of the mother.

HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL JOURNEY TO MONTENEGRO BY VIALLA DE SOMMIERES FOUNDING BOOK OF A PARADOXICAL IMAGINARY OF A JOURNEY TO MONTENEGRO In 1820, Vialla de Sommières published in Paris his book Historical and political journey to Montenegro. He was Commander of the Second division of Illyrian army in Ragusa from 1812 to 1813. Later, this work was used by many 19th century French travel writers as a model source for their own observations on Montenegro. Naturally, travelling to an unknown country implies an element of discovery. By analysing de Sommières’s text and the works by other French travel writers (P. Loti, X. Marmier, H. Avelot, J. de la Nézière, F. Lenorment, Ch. Yriarte, M. Sermet, l’abbé P. Bauron) we have been able to situate descriptions of journeys to and throughout Montenegro, which express an effect of surprise or discovery, and we have classified our findings in four sections: difficult access to astonishing landscapes, the cult of freedom, the character of Montenegrins, and the position of women. Thus, a journey to Montenegro becomes a kind of a return to a distant, precarious and, even, timeless epoch. In this sense, Vialla de Sommières’s work constitutes a founding work of a paradoxical imaginary of a journey to Montenegro, as the analysis of this travel story proposes. Golden Door (Nuovomondo), a 2006 film by Emanuele Crialese, tells the story of Europeans immigrating to America at the turn of the twentieth century. Representing various characters travelling there driven by diverse motivations, the film showcases different versions of a utopian imaginary vision of America. The article analyses the various ways in which the American ‘promised land’ is conceptualized in the film and how all of them are contrasted with and checked by the realities of the voyage and the Ellis Island reception centre. Referring to the concept of the imaginary, the analysis discusses mechanisms and functions of their production and their subsequent verification and contrast with the rather dystopian realities of the host country.

After defining utopianism Czigányik gives a brief introduction to Hungarian utopian literature. While he discusses Tariménes utazása [‘The Voyage of Tariménes’], written by György Bessenyei in 1804, the utopian scenes of Imre Madách’s Az ember tragédiája [‘The Tragedy of Man’, 1862] and Frigyes Karinthy’s short utopian piece, Utazás Faremidoba [‘Voyage to Faremido’, 1916], the bulk of the paper deals with Mór Jókai’s monumental novel, A jövő század regénye, [‘The Novel of the Century to Come’, 1872]. Jókai, who had taken an active part in the 1848 uprising, depicts in this novel a future world of an imaginary twentieth century, where Hungary has primacy within the Habsburg empire (with the emperor king being Árpád Habsburg) and the invention of the airplane (by a Hungarian) brings lasting peace, stability and prosperity to the world. Besides introducing the Hungarian utopian tradition, the paper will reflect upon the role of individuals in imagined societies and how an agency-centered narrative overwrites the essentially structuralist view of history, that usually permeates utopias.

This article examines the poetics of childhood in Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch’s Ali Zaoua, Prince of the Streets, focusing on dream culture, sea travel, and elements of Sufi mysticism. In Ali Zaoua, symbols such as eyes, a compass, Twin Towers, sea travel, and an imaginary island with two suns visualize an Islamic dream culture. Ayouch presents the cruelty of life on the streets marked by violence, filth, and concrete, yet the film celebrates a dream culture by focusing on fantasy, images of a spiritual voyage, poetry, and Sufi mysticism, which eclipse the harsh, socially realistic portrayal of the lives of homeless children.

Within the theoretical framework of discourse analysis, we analyze how the enchantment concept (Réau / Poupeau 2007; Winkin 2002) finds its way on travel blog productions. To do so, we work on a corpus of 114 posts, 115 photos and 345 comments. We shed light on the discursive, enunciative and semiotic strategies implemented by authors to immerse readers in an imaginary world where reality gives way to the marvellous. How, in travel blog situations, do bloggers seduce web users? And in what way their audience seems to respond to these attempts? How does denial of market and social realities work in online travel stories? After having placed this scientific work within the current research trends which question discourses and travels, we describe the methodology we use to identify, in the bloggers’ productions and their readers’ comments, the mechanisms the authors deploy to create the illusion of a perfect destination before revealing some of our linguistic and semiotic findings. Eventually, we demonstrate that readers are far from being the naive interlocutors one might assume.

This article looks at rare Kodachrome film taken across Oceania, mostly shot by a skilled amateur filmmaker, Edmund Zacher, to document the circumnavigation of the famous clipper Yankee. There are three intertwined lines of inquiry traced here. The first explores relations between US imperialism, moving image media and a popular imaginary, considering how experiences of virtual travel engage with cultural ideology. The second examines how this footage may be interpreted: how might critical frameworks brought to bear on amateur non-fiction differ from those commonly applied to professional and narrative fiction film? A key reference point is the theory of cinematic gesture developed by Giorgio Agamben, who expands on the work of Gilles Deleuze and his notion of the movement image. This stress on gesture and on the mediality of moving images leads towards a third key area under consideration: colour and the (then) new medium of Kodachrome. Homing in on relations between colour stock and motion picture realism, this study explores the ways that Kodachrome colour might have affected broader perceptions of the world itself.

Comment expliquer la croissance continue de la mobilité touristique malgré la crise économique mondiale ? L’une des réponses, qui constitue la problématique fondamentale de cette recherche en sociologie, est la permanence de la fonction noétique du voyage. Se déplacer c’est rencontrer l’Autre et l’Ailleurs, qui peuvent être source d’inspiration, de plaisir, de refus ou d’indifférence. Quel sens l’acteur social donne-t-il à son voyage ? Il peut être imaginé, vécu ou raconté, et ainsi produire des images variées. Lors d’un voyage, l’individu est confronté aux trois temporalités : les images du voyage se mêlent à ses représentations imaginaires antérieures, son présent est fait d’un vécu sensoriel associé à l’espace-temps qui en forme le cadre et, en même temps, il est déjà dans la perspective du retour en collectant les images ou objets souvenirs qui seront les supports de son récit futur et de sa mémoire. Deux enquêtes de terrain effectuées auprès de voyageurs/touristes danois dans l’Aude d’une part et chinois à Paris d’autre part, ont permis de distinguer le déplacement touristique du seul voyage et de montrer que tout touriste devient voyageur lorsqu’il fait une expérience noétique, c’est-à-dire qu’il entre en dialogue avec l’Autre et son environnement dans une temporalité susceptible de le changer lui-même et partant, sa perception de la réalité. Cette dialectique, repérée en son temps par les philosophes antiques, demeure donc en puissance dans toute mobilité volontaire, malgré le tourisme de masse, industriel et standard, et persiste à jouer un rôle initiatique dans la construction de l’êtreHow to explain the continuous growth of tourist mobility despite the global economic crisis? One of the answers establishing the fundamental problem of this research in sociology is the constancy of the noetic function of travel. Moving to meet the Other one and the Elsewhere can be a source of inspiration, pleasure, refusal or indifference. Which meaning does the social actor give to his journey? This can be imagined, lived or told, and thus producing varied images. During a trip the individual is confronting three temporalities: the images of the trip mingle with his previous imaginary representations, his present is made of a sensory experience associated with the space-time forming the frame and, at the same time he is already in the perspective of the return/homecoming collecting images or objects that will compose the support of his future story and memory. Two field surveys made it possible to distinguish the tourist trip from the journey, one carried out with Danish travelers / tourists in Aude on the one hand and another one with Chinese tourists in Paris, and to show that every tourist becomes a traveler when he makes a noetic experience, that is to say, he enters into a dialogue with the Other one and the environment creating a temporality likely to change himself and so his perception of reality. Du Roland furieux de l’Arioste (1516-1532) au Songe de Kepler (1634), cette thèse propose une étude des récits de voyages aériens dans la fiction narrative de la Renaissance (romans, poèmes épiques, satires) ainsi que des discours théoriques abordant la question du vol et de l’élévation (démonologie, cosmographie, astronomie, discours sur la possibilité du vol humain ou le vol des oiseaux, etc.). Trois principaux objets sont mis en valeur : les voyages célestes écrits dans la lignée de récits comme le Songe de Scipion de Cicéron ou l’Icaroménippe de Lucien de Samosate ; les voyages aériens de la fiction chevaleresque ; le motif du transport diabolique. L’étude montre ainsi l’importance prise par l’imaginaire du vol à la Renaissance, à la croisée de la fiction et des discours savants, et dessine une « pré-histoire » des fictions d’envol avant les récits de Godwin (The Man in the Moone, 1638) et de Cyrano de Bergerac (Etats et Empires de la Lune et du Soleil, 1657 et 1662). Cette thèse se concentre principalement sur la collection des Voyages imaginaires, songes, visions et romans cabalistiques publiée par l'éditeur Charles-Georges-Thomas Garnier (1787-1789). Elle contient de nombreuses œuvres de fiction françaises de la fin du XVIIe siècle et du XVIIIe siècle, ainsi que quelques traductions, principalement de l'anglais. Des romans tels que Robinson Crusoé de Defoe, Les Voyages de Gulliver de Swift, Micromégas de Voltaire, L'Autre Monde de Cyrano de Bergerac ou L'Histoire véritable de Lucien de Samosate figurent dans cette collection. La collection établie par Garnier constitue un excellent point de référence pour mieux comprendre ce qui rassemble ces fictions et ce qui les caractérise. The thesis proposes a critical journey structured around an examination of the paratext, shedding light on the foundations of Garnier's editorial project. The analysis focuses first on how these paratexts shape the reception of the works and create a cohesive narrative. This initial perspective gradually broadens to consider the collection effect revealing the intricate networks of meaning that form a comprehensive cartography of the imagination. This exploration is further enriched by a reflection on literary genre, articulated through two dimensions: the relationship to travel, characterized by a rhetoric of verisimilitude that pastiches authentic narratives, and the relationship to imagination, examining their connections to fantasy, rational conjecture and the fantastique. Finally, three key statements emerge from the paratextual apparatus and are confirmed in the course of the study. First, the imaginary voyages have a strong propensity for intertextuality and hypertextuality in Gérard Genette's sense. Second, these fictions are part of the novelistic category known at the time as works of imagination (ouvrages d'imagination) alongside fairy tales and oriental tales. Paris et Londres offrent des sites privilégiés pour l’observation du nouveau regard porté sur la ville à la fin de l’époque des Lumières. Notre démonstration, basée sur des récits de voyage, des traités d’architecture et d’autres écrits sur la ville, vise à élaborer une histoire culturelle et littéraire de la ville à travers un volet de coopération histoire/poétique des représentations. Dans un premier temps, l’étude des projets urbains formulés à Paris et à Londres permet de dégager deux modalités complémentaires du rapport au phénomène urbain : la magnificence publique et l’utilité publique. Entre ces deux pôles émergent les concepts d’embellissement et d’improvement qui relèvent d’un imaginaire artistique et, respectivement, technique. En outre, cette réflexion générale sur l’aménagement urbain favorise l’émergence d’un espace public des savoirs, observée à travers deux cartes des lieux de savoirs à Paris et à Londres, élaborées par nos soins.Dans un deuxième temps, nous esquissons une poétique comparée de la ville qui permet de montrer l’imbrication des enjeux esthétiques et épistémologiques dans la description urbaine. D’une part, l’émergence de la théorie du caractère en architecture explique le lien entre les processus de lecture de la ville, la pratique de la réunion des arts et l’embellissement urbain. D’autre part, l’analyse comparée des différentes descriptions urbaines fait ressortir la circulation des modèles descriptifs de la ville. Le modèle de la cité idéale en particulier démontre parfaitement le réseau subtil de connivences qui se tissent à cette époque entre les formes urbaines et les formes discursivesThe two great European capitals, Paris and London, are emblematic of the phenomenon of urban growth in the second half of the Enlightenment. The aim of our study, based on travelogues, architectural treatises and other writings on the two cities, is to elaborate a cultural and literary history of Paris and London by means of a multiple approach of the concept of representation which combines history and poetics. On the one hand, the analysis of the urban projects designed for Paris and London allows us to pinpoint two complementary manners of conceiving the city: public magnificence and public utility. Between these two poles emerge the concepts of embellissement and (urban) improvement which stem from an artistic and, respectively, technical urban imaginary. Moreover, the general debate on urban improvement fosters the emergence of a public sphere of science, demonstrated through two maps of places of science in Paris and London, conceived for the purposes of this study.On the other hand, a poetic approach of these urban representations shows the overlapping of aesthetic and epistemological issues. Firstly, the emergence of the architectural concept of character accounts for the link between the process of reading the city, the collaboration of arts at this time and urban improvement. Secondly, the comparative analysis of different types of urban descriptions allows us to demonstrate the circulation of several descriptive patterns, among which the pattern of the ideal city is the perfect embodiment of the subtle connections between urban forms and forms of discourse in the second half of the Enlightenment

Pourquoi la fiction utopique française des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles s’est-elle incarnée sous la forme d’un récit de voyage imaginaire à la première personne ? Pour la plupart des commentateurs du genre, l’utopie se pense d’abord et surtout sur le plan des idées, des mentalités et des idéologies ; la forme qu’elle adopte, les figures qu’elle déploie, les représentations dont elle est porteuse seraient, au mieux, des accidents de parcours. Notre hypothèse de lecture est tout autre : ces textes intéressent l’historien de la littérature précisément parce qu’ils s’articulent sous la forme d’un récit, mettant en tension la subjectivité trouble du voyageur témoin. Par leur construction mêlant le factuel et le fictionnel, ils se situent dans la double perspective du « monde comme fable » et de la « fable comme monde ». Cette dualité définitoire, nous l’étudierons à partir de la notion d’imaginaire géographique : les textes sur lesquels nous nous penchons problématisent en effet les liens entre voyage et langage, territoire et société, mobilité et individu. Our hypothesis is quite different : these texts should interest the historian of literature precisely because they present themselves in the form of a narrative in which the subjectivity of the narrator is problematic. By their construction mixing factual and fictional elements, these texts can be read in the double perspective of the “world as fable” and the “fable as world”. We will study this duality through the notion of geographical imagination : the texts we analyze are addressing the links between travel and language, territory and society, mobility and subjectivity. The geographical imagination that we will interpret is a process that informs the perception of the world and the possibility of its representation. This doctoral thesis is divided in two parts : we will investigate depictions of space and spatial practices which are both mediations between the utopian traveler and the places he crosses

Au-delà de l'image dépréciative ou équivoque du touriste - lieu commun qui a alimente maints essais journalistiques ou moralisateurs - il s'agit, dans cette recherche, de formuler une hypothèse explicative des comportements touristiques s'éloignant quelque peu de la tradition "dénonciatrice" du tourisme. L’imaginaire touristique, avec fatalement sa cohorte de stéréotypes et de cliches, ne doit pas être rejeté comme simple avatar de l'aliénation dans laquelle vivent les vacanciers modernes. Il semble qu'une réflexion sur les fonctions des images stéréotypes dans l'univers du touriste a été négligée par les analystes du tourisme quand elle n'est pas escamotée ou évacuée avec quelques formules idéologiques expéditives issues de la mode intellectuelle du moment. On se propose dans cette thèse de fournir quelques éléments (tires d'une pratique professionnelle de guide de voyage et de l'observation de groupes de jeunes touristes français visitant le tiers-monde) qui poussent à penser que ces images-stéréotypes, certes déformantes, ont une fonction essentielle dans l'appréhension que fait le touriste de l'inconnu. Elles sont moins des obstacles iconiques a la reconnaissance du monde que des représentations "transitionnelles" (Winnicott), stables et collectives, alimentées par l'univers du religieux au sens large et marquées par les traditions curiales, facilitant l'appréhension de l'autre et de l'ailleurs. En fait, à travers l'exploration succincte de cet imaginaire exotique, on espère montrer que le tourisme, comme quête de sens, avec les sociabilités (ludiques) qu'il favorise, les images qu'il génère, est un dispositif d'appréhension graduée, codée et non traumatisante de l'extérieur et de l'altéritéThis thesis is a result of several years of work as tour guide, from 1984 to 1988, with the French youth hostels, I travelled with French groups of tourists to different countries like brazil, china, Thailand, Philippines, Burma, Ireland, Hong-Kong, Malaysia and Quebec. Inspired by a reflection on child's playing extracted from Donald. W. Winnicot(1), this contribution intends to cast a socio-anthropological light on holidays' behavior. Its main hypothesis is that there is a 'homology of structure' (max weber) between the child's area of play and the vacations' space. Child’s play, according to some psychoanalysts, expresses a relationship of confidence established with space and the immediate environment. An area of playing (or space of illusion) is thus created as an intermediary element between the child and the outside world. That imaginary and that infantile experiment of a confident balance with the outside world can be laid down as a symbolic matrix that moulds the vacations' sociality of today. Pilgrimages, group tourism, clubs, holiday villages, camping, etc. Strongly suggest the presence or creation of a proper space time. That space time, along with the themes it conveys - conviviality and retiring into one's shell -, evokes a laymen's pattern of "communitas" on the one hand, and, on the other hand, it somehow actualizes that original relation to the "outside world" where the child lives. Les "Voyages de Gulliver" s'inscrivent dans la tradition du voyage imaginaire, genre fondé par Lucien de Samosate, et qui a connu un grand essor en France au XVIIe siècle. Les liens entre l'oeuvre de Swift et les récits en français relèvent de deux types. D'une part, des relations intertextuelles rattachent les "Voyages" à plusieurs hypotextes (l'"Histoire véritable" dans la version des d'Ablancourt, le "Quart livre" de Rabelais et "L'autre monde" de Cyrano de Bergerac). Les imaginaires étrangers et nationaux sur l’Amazonie brésilienne sont le fruit d’un long et imparfait travail de construction historique et littéraire initié par les Européens au XVIe siècle. Les premiers textes sur la région rendent compte d’un lieu lointain, exotique et sauvage. Ces représentations demeureront à jamais associées à l’espace amazonien, y compris au XIXe siècle lorsque le Brésil entreprend son processus d’émancipation politique et de construction identitaire. Dans ce vaste chantier où est bâtie en même temps l’unité nationale, il convient de comprendre comment les imaginaires étrangers ont pu façonner les imaginaires locaux. Les hommes de lettres amazoniens apporteront une contribution remarquable à ce processus de constitution d’une identité collective. Voulant assurer à l’Amazonie une place importante dans l’architecture nationale, ils font appel aussi bien aux traditions des peuples autochtones qu’aux savoirs des Européens. À travers l’analyse des récits de voyage, de la presse, de la littérature régionaliste, à la lumière de théories scientifiques et de courants littéraires, à la croisée de plusieurs disciplines, nous analysons la formation des imaginaires sur l’Amazonie, la façon dont ils se sont consolidés au fil des siècles et dans quelle mesure des écrivains amazoniens s’en sont approprié pour bâtir une littérature régionalisteForeign and national imaginaries of the Brazilian Amazon are the result of a long and incomplete historical and literary construction started by Europeans in the 16th century. The first texts about the region gave accounts of a faraway, exotic and wild place. These representations would be permanently associated to the Amazonian space, in particular during the 19th century, when Brazil initiated its process of political emancipation and identity formation. In the vast project of constructing a national identity, it is important to understand how foreign imaginaries shaped the local imaginaries. And the Amazonian writers had a remarkable participation in establishing a collective identity. Wanting to secure a place for the Amazon in the national architecture, they used the traditions of the indigenous people as well as the knowledge of the Europeans. Using the study of travel narratives, of the press, of regionalist literature, through the lens of scientific theories and literary currents, and at the intersection of various disciplines, we will analyze the formation of imaginaries of the Amazon, how they have consolidated throughout the centuries, and to what extent Amazonian writers appropriated them to create a regional literature
Os imaginários estrangeiros e nacionais sobre a Amazônia brasileira são frutos de um longo e imperfeito trabalho de construção histórica e literária, iniciado no século XVI pelos europeus. Os primeiros textos sobre a região dão conta de um lugar distante, exótico e selvagem. Representações que serão associadas para sempre ao espaço amazônico, notadamente no século XIX quando o Brasil inicia seu processo de emancipação política e de construção identitária. No vasto projeto de constituição da identidade nacional, importa compreender como os imaginários estrangeiros modelaram os imaginários locais. Outrossim, os escritores amazônicos tiveram notável participação no estabelecimento de uma identidade coletiva. Buscando assegurar um lugar para a Amazônia na arquitetura nacional, eles recorreram tanto às tradições dos povos autóctones quanto aos saberes dos europeus. Através da análise de narrativas de viagem, da imprensa, da literatura regionalista, à luz de teorias científicas e de correntes literárias, e na intersecção de várias disciplinas, são analisados a formação dos imaginários sobre a Amazônia, de que forma os mesmos se consolidaram ao longo dos séculos e em que medida os escritores amazônicos deles se apropriaram para criar uma literatura regionalista

Ce travail de recherche porte sur le récit de voyage au Portugal au XIXème siècle, du point de vue de la formation des images de l'étranger, dans le cadre duquel on analysera ses spécificités, aussi bien que le rapport qu'il a établi avec la presse périodique, notamment le feuilleton, modalité d'écriture d'influence française, avec une grande projection à l'époque. Dans ce contexte, notre attention se centre tout particulièrement dans les récits de voyage des écrivains de la deuxième génération du romantisme portugais, en réfléchissant sur les mécanismes qui sont à l'origine da la formation des hétéro et auto-images, fondées sur un imaginaire collectif, résultant du procès indissociable entre altérité et identité. Cette analyse permettra d'établir une sorte de cartographie des voyages qui ont marqué la littérature portugaise du XIXème siècle et de découvrir les lieux devenus mythiques pour les voyageurs portugais, à l'égard des paradigmes culturels de l'époque.

AbstractUnderstanding the ocean in both metaphorical and material terms, this essay approaches Chinese American texts from the intersection of oceanic, mobility, and Chinese American studies. While mobility has often been perceived in highly romanticized terms, in Chinese American literature the ocean is characterized by ambiguity as it becomes a site of negotiation for the role of immigrants during the era of Chinese exclusion. In Maxine Hong Kingston’s auto/biographical text China Men, Pam Chun’s family narrative The Money Dragon, poetry from Ellis Island and Angel Island, and Genny Lim’s play Paper Angels, the complex relationships between time and space, sea and land, inform the immigrants’ journey across the ocean. Their American beginnings are defined by a liberating, though often disorienting, mobility and at the same time a longed for, but mostly paralyzing immobility on and off ships and islands. To use Maxine Hong Kingston words, these circumstances of migration turn Chinese Americans into “ocean people.” Ultimately, a focus on the ship voyage and the island as oceanic tropes in Chinese American texts reveals the Chinese American experience as shaped by maritime (im)mobilities.

L’île est un espace constamment évoqué par l’écrivain haïtienne Marie-Célie Agnant. Dans l’ensemble de son œuvre, les différents milieux aquatiques tels que l’océan et son immensité, la mer des Caraïbes entourant l’île ou les nombreux lagons, mais aussi les fleuves et les petites rivières, sont des éléments qui semblent cohabiter avec la même ampleur dans son pays natal ainsi que dans son imaginaire. En effet, cette omniprésence du liquide élémentaire constitue l’essence d’un langage poétique original, à partir duquel l’eau acquière une remarquable symbolique. En effet, Le livre d’Emma (2001) est parsemé de descriptions où les nuances de la couleur de l’eau de la mer, bleue dans ses profondeurs, des fois grise, orange et rouge au coucher de soleil, cachent des bribes de la mémoire collective du peuple haïtien. D’ailleurs, le fleuve vertèbre le voyage intérieur d’Emma, la mémoire de ses ancêtres africaines jaillit comme dans sa poésie (Balafres, 1994 ; Et puis parfois quelquefois… 2009) et devient l’eau de rivière qui coule sans cesse dans son œuvre romanesque et poétique. Enfin, notre corpus littéraire est composé de ces ouvrages que l’on considère de référence dans littérature francophone haïtienne contemporaine. De cette manière, nous proposons donc d’approfondir l’analyse de la richesse de ces métaphores qui lient l’eau à la mémoire - individuelle et collective -, en décrivant le parcours métaphorique évoquée à travers le personnage d’Emma, dans sa dimension identitaire et féminine.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/XXVColloqueAFUE.2016.3066

How is the Gulf-Caribbean configured as a place defined and measured by its physical conditions? And as a space perceived, lived, represented, and imagined, how is it inserted within the ecumene understood by the Western world? This communication seeks to explore the five centuries and a little more of the Caribbean as a desire, as a territory and as a horizon. Inspired by the centuries of great explorations and transatlantic voyages, three "courses" are proposed that, mobilizing the tools of history, geography, urban studies and visual arts, reconstitute certain mechanisms and processes through which today’s Greater Caribbean is apprehended as the complex transterritorial entity that it constitutes. The first course takes us to the chimerical past of the Sea of Darkness and the legendary islands that will become the Antilles archipelago; the second course is a journey through the port cities frequented by steamships in the era of transatlantic expansion, while the third course is set in the natural and tax havens of the contemporary Greater Caribbean. La presente comunicación explora cinco siglos del Caribe como deseo, como territorio y como horizonte. Inspirada en los siglos de las grandes exploraciones y los viajes transatlánticos, se proponen tres “derroteros” que, movilizando las herramientas de la historia, la geografía, los estudios urbanos y las artes visuales, reconstituyen ciertos procesos y mecanismos a través de los cuales el Gran Caribe contemporáneo es aprehendido como la entidad transterritorial compleja que hoy constituye.
