Anatomical illustration has evolved through the centuries, first having artistic and educational purposes and later more strictly medical objectives. Between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, the analytical model (representation of individual parts, organs and systems) gave way to the composite model (description of the human body as a whole). Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there was a reversal of tendency: initially the anatomist requested the help of artists, but later the artist asked anatomists to check the accuracy of his work. In this way, anatomical illustration reached a high level of precision. This period also saw the creation of the “La Specola” Zoology Museum's collection of anatomical wax models. Initiated in the eighteenth century, it also included a series of contemporary colour illustrations executed by various artists. Most of the illustrations concern human anatomy, while a small number deal with comparative anatomy. These illustrations, each accompanied by one or more explanatory sheets, were produced to help explain the corresponding wax models. The anatomical wax model collection has been well preserved through the centuries, maintaining its ancient splendour, and it is the object of continuing research and restoration interventions.

Twenty three drawings by Luka Voronin, artist to the J. I. Billings – G. A. Sarychev North-East Expedition (1785–1795), were discovered in the collection of illustrations for Academician P. S. Pallas’ Zoographia rosso-asiatica at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive the Russian Academy of Sciences. For Pallas, this expedition became an important source of information about the Russian fauna. The expedition’s materials were used by him in the preparation of Zoographia rosso-asiatica, which is why some of Voronin’s expedition drawings that had been selected by Pallas were preserved in the collection of illustrations. In this article, the process of attribution of Voronin’s zoological drawings is described and the descriptions of all drawings are published for the first time. The descriptions are given in the order of illustrations in Zoographia rosso-asiatica and contain modern names of the illustrated species, the Latin names given by Pallas, the date, size, transcript and translation of the marks, and descriptions of other distinctive features of the sheets. Introducing Voronin’s zoological drawings sheds new light on the pages from the expedition’s history and broadens the source base for the history of natural science illustration in Russia. Studying these drawings may become an important part of the visual reconstruction of natural-science collections of the Petersburg Kunstkamera of the late 18th – early 19th century.

From the publisher that brought us Gloria Anzaldua’s classic work Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987), now comes Good Girls Marry Doctors:South Asian American Daughters on Obedience and Rebellion. AuntLute Books gives us this 2016 anthology of short stories edited by Piyali Bhattacharyathat, I envision, will strike a similar chord of deep resonance withthose who are living in the liminal spaces of mixed consciousness, mixed cultures, mixed religions – the South Asian American diasporic community andbeyond. The striking cover of the book shows a graphic illustration of a browngirl decked in traditional South Asian gold jewelry and a red sarhi, her handslipping underneath the fabric below her waist, leaving the viewer to imaginethat she is feelin’ herself. The style of writing and the range of themes allow this book to speak toa multitude of audiences. The book can easily be included in syllabi rangingfrom South Asian American studies, American studies, and Islamic studies towomen/gender/sexuality studies, cultural studies, and affect theory. WhatBhattacharya set out to do over a span of eight years in bringing this collectionto fruition is to create for herself and the women she knew a network, a community,a support system (p. v) – “we had to find our tribe” (p. viii). What Ifind interesting and useful in this collection is that it can be used as an illustrationof how gender and sexuality frame affective knowledge productionand world-making in diasporic communities ...

The study of plants was nothing new when The Royal Society was founded, but some of our earliest Fellows changed it drastically. Perhaps they did not do this as suddenly or as completely as did Newton for dynamics, but in the long run they had at least as great an influence on views of the natural world and how to study it. Did God create all the great variety of plants no one (in Europe) had ever seen before, and if so why? Plants brought back by explorers, especially from North America, and plants looked at in the microscope, together with the taxonomic system constructed by Linnaeus, replaced the plants grown in monastic gardens and their successors in public botanic gardens, and the study of plants for purely medicinal uses.

This dissertation aims to demonstrate that, meanwhile theatre's costumes are particularly studied, it appeared important to know its first gesture : the costumes drawing, which alone have subsisted. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the theatrical aesthetic has know a significant theoretical evolution. What is at stake, in this time, is the alternative between tradition's permanence and changing's attempt. Is such a change possible in the sceloresed institution of this period ? Are the theoreticians going to convince the costume's drawers to leave their habits ? Will the discussions around history's painting transform the theatre's costumes, and in the same time costumes drawing, to a neoclassic style ? Will fashion influence it ? These are the questions which will be discussed

Image annotation is an essential task in professional archives exploitation. Archivsits must describe every image in order to make easier future retrieval tasks. The main difficulties are how to interpret the visual contents, how to bring together images whitch can be associated in same categories, and how to deal with the user's subjectivity. In this thesis, we use the principle of active learning in order to help a user who wants organize with accuracy image collections. From the visual content analysis, complementary active learning strategies are proposed to the user to help him to identify and put together images in relevant categories according to his oppinion. We choose to express this image classification problem with active learning by using the Transferable Belief Model (TBM), an elaboration on the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. The TBM allows the combination, the revision and the representation of the knowledge which can be extracted from the visual contents and the previously identified categories. Our method proposed in this theoritical framework gives a detailed modeling of the knowledge by representing explicitly cases of multi-labeling, while quantifying uncertainty (related to the semantic gap) and conflict induced by the analysis of the visual content in different modalities (colors, textures). A human-machine interface was developed in order to validate our approach on reference tests, personal images collections and professional photos from the National Audiovisual Institute. An evaluation was driven with professional users and showed very positive results in terms of utility, of usability and satisfaction

My thesis investigates an interdisciplinary narrative of the transatlantic migration of Surrealism to Mexico during the 1940s. I focus on the ways exiled European Surrealists approached notions of Mexican material culture in a hybrid society where local traditions coexisted with a global modernity. Looking to popular and print culture outlets, I concentrate on how Mexican material culture was perceived, promoted, and marketed through a Surrealist lens. Specifically, I consider the collaboration of the German pharmaceutical company Casa Bayer, S.A. and exiled Spanish-born Surrealist Remedios Varo, who produced a series of medical advertisements during her first decade in Mexico City from 1943 to 1949. Through an examination of Varo’s work, my thesis explores the changing boundaries of fine and commercial art that resulted from the efforts of artists who participated in modern mass culture and consumerism. I investigate the significance of her Surrealist advertisements for Casa Bayer as a material culture bound on one side with fine art and the other side with the development of Mexican advertising. This case study supports my argument that Surrealism, as a transnational aesthetic, was one alternative way of demonstrating the new cultural meanings of advertising in an ambiguous, modern Mexican society. Examining Varo’s illustrations in light of the movement of western Europeans to Mexico and the country’s commitment to modern progress explains why the artist negotiated her past avant-garde sensibilities with her Mexican present.

Phillips, Catherine Victoria. "Art and politics in the Austrian Netherlands : Count Charles Cobenzl (1712-70) and his collection of drawings". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4049/.

Resumo:
The Cabinet of Count Charles Cobenzl lies at the heart of the Hermitage Museum, forming the core of the collection of Old Master Drawings. Yet despite perpetual references to him as ‘grand collectionneur’, no study of Cobenzl’s collecting has ever been undertaken. Nor, in the absence of prosopographical studies of art production or collecting in the Austrian Netherlands in the middle of the eighteenth century, or indeed of other individual collectors, has it been possible to set him in a ‘collecting context’. Bringing together the works of art themselves and Cobenzl’s abundant correspondence, this thesis assesses what he owned, how and why he acquired it, the political and intellectual framework for his collecting and how he perceived the objects in his possession. Looking at Cobenzl’s roles as public figure and private collector, it shows how the latter fits into the context of the former, his collecting rooted firmly in his ambition to revive the economy and the arts of the Austrian Netherlands, in his own ambiguous status and his conflicts with the Governor, Charles de Lorraine. The battle for both real and perceived superiority was played out in many different parts of Cobenzl’s professional and private life, and he used display – the adornment of his home and his person and his collecting – as part of a play for social prestige. Cobenzl used objects as a discrete assertion of both intellectual and aesthetic superiority. This thesis proposes that Cobenzl’s transformation into a collector of drawings was an example of his perspicacious identification of emerging trends that could be turned to advantage, economic or prestigious, public or personal. He was drawn by the status of drawings, perceived as accessible only to those of greater refinement and understanding, as something elite, less accessible than the collecting of paintings. The direct and specific stimulus for his emergence as a collector of drawings lay in the provenance of two large groups of works he was offered, which permitted him to assert a very specific link to the past. It suggests that Cobenzl adopted not only the drawings, but also their histories, to negotiate social position and identity, within the context of his pragmatic utilitarianism. This egocentric study also provides the foundation for a preliminary attempt to create a context for Cobenzl’s collecting of drawings, within his circle, in the Austrian Netherlands overall, and, through analysis of his collecting practices, in the wider European context.

Resumo:
New World plants were exhaustively catalogued in the floras and herbaria produced by the great scientific expeditions led by European naturalists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such as the Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada (1783–1816), directed by José Celestino Mutis. Species were primarily illustrated in a way that would allow their identification according to Linnaean taxonomies. Three contemporary artists from Colombia—Alberto Baraya, María Fernanda Cardoso and Eulalia de Valdenebro—have reworked the Enlightenment norms of botanical illustration in order to draw attention to their many erasures and to chart environmental change over the past two centuries. Baraya’s Herbario de plantas artificiales (2002–) celebrates the anomalies and aberrations that were smoothed out in the European quest for a universal system of classification, exposing the relationship between modern Western science and the dynamics of economic and cultural dispossession. De Valdenebro’s seed collections contrast the homogenization and commercialization of transgenic varieties with the greater biodiversity of native seeds, whose cultivation has unfolded within a much higher degree of reciprocity between humans and their environment. In On the Marriages of Plants (2018), Cardoso reflects on Linnaeus’s use of sexual terms borrowed from the human world in her exploration of more recent research into reciprocal relationships between plants, insects, and humans. I bring these projects into dialogue with a selection of illustrations by Abel Rodríguez (Mogaje Guihu), an artist whose work preserves the ancestral knowledge of the Nonuya and Muinane communities in the Colombian Amazon. Contrasting with Linnaean abstraction, Rodríguez’s drawings and paintings depict rainforest ecosystems in ways that cast light on Amazonian concepts of cohabitation and the co-constitution of human and nonhuman subjects. These enter into conflict with two dominant Western paradigms: extraction, on the one hand, and conservation, on the other.

“Depend on Heaven for food” (kao tian chi fan, 靠天吃飯) is a well-known Chinese proverb. The presumed author of this expression was Wen Kang (文康), his novel Legend of Heroes and Heroines (儿女英雄傳) Ernü Yingxiong Zhuan first published in late 1870s became very popular. The expression “depend on Heaven for food” is from the 33rd chapter of the novel. Yet, the image under the title Picture Depend on Heaven for Food (kao tian chi fan tu, 靠天吃飯圖) appeared earlier than novel: two stone steles dated 1813 with the same picture, but different commentary text. In the academician Vasyli M. Alekseev’s collection of Chinese popular prints nianhua there are several engravings on this subject, the explanations for which are in the notebooks of the Chinese xiansheng mentors V. M. Alekseev to his collections of folk art (St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, fund 820, inv. 1, files 473, 479a). And finally we can compare xiansheng comments to (kao tian chi fan tu, 靠天吃飯圖) with the essay on the same subject by Lu Xun in his Qie Jie Ting Essay Collection (雜文集: 且介亭雜文二 集, 1935).

The written culture of a people is impressive in terms of heritage documents. These include books, the press, old prints and manuscripts, maps. According to their scientific importance, the Library’s collection includes current books, old books, books that, regardless of the year of publication, have special graphic qualities of the cover, title page, valuable content, atypical format, illustrations by well-known artists, and books with special bibliophile value with the signature or autograph of the author/donor. In libraries, such documents come from private donations and libraries; they are collected by professional people who activated in a certain period of time. These donations are managed in the form of special collections at the Arts Branch. In this context, the question of managing this special fund appears, i.e. the inventory, cataloging and preservation of the fund, the elaboration of a common Bibliography for all branches of “B. P. Hasdeu” Municipal Library, which would be permanently completed and therefore become everybody’s common good.

The authors of this paper discuss visual material based on the plot of the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen yanyi, 封神演義), formed on the basis of large corpus of written historical works and Song-Yuan vernacular literature. Various illustrated woodblock and lithographic editions of the novel (published before 1911) are discussed in chronological order with focus on the special features and artistic level of their illustrations, whose content and technique are compared. Popular woodblock prints nianhua from Russian collections are examined in order to trace whether connections with book illustrations exist and what episodes of the novel became more popular and for what reason. The paper refers to materials stored in prominent libraries, museums and research centers of Russia, Europe, US and Asia.

Visual storytelling is an art form that has been utilized for centuries to communicate stories, convey messages, and evoke emotions. The images and text must be used in harmony to create a compelling narrative experience. With the rise of text-to-image generation models such as Stable Diffusion, it is becoming more promising to investigate methods of automatically creating illustrations for stories. However, these diffusion models are usually developed to generate a single image, resulting in a lack of consistency be- tween figures and objects across different illustrations of the same story, which is especially important in stories with human characters. This work introduces a novel technique for creating consistent human figures in visual stories. This is achieved in two steps. The first step is to collect human portraits with various identifying characteristics, such as gender and age, that describe the character. The second step is to use this collection to train DreamBooth to generate a unique token ID for each type of character. These IDs can then be used to replace the names of the story characters in the image-generation process. By combining these two steps, we can create controlled human figures for various visual storytelling contexts.

We present a numerical strategy for a propagating interface in multiphase flows using a level set method combined with a local mesh adaptative technique. We use the level set method to move the propagating interface in multiphase flows. We also use the local mesh adaptative technique to increase the grid resolution at regions near the propagating interface and additionally at the regions near points of high curvature with a minimum of additional expense. For illustration, we apply the adaptive coupled level set method to a collection of bubbles moving under passive transport. Good agreement has been obtained in the comparision of the numerical results for the collection of bubbles using an adaptative grid with those using a single grid. We also apply the adaptive coupled level set method to a droplet falling on a step where it is important to accurately model the effect of surface tension force and the motion of the free-surface, and the numerical results agree very closely with available data.

The author proposes to study some structural elements of the sound discourse, as well as their manifestation in the ideation of Sonata no.1 for clarinet and piano by Oleg Negruţa. The fact that this creation is written under the influence of jazz music and style is mentioned by the composer himself in the preface to the work – Sonata in Jazz Style. Following the detailed analysis of the first part, it can be observed that the element (language) of jazz is used to the maximum. Typical intonations as jumps, ornaments, trills, sonorous slides, delayed sounds, but also the genuistic sphere are used to the full: the swing dance, although it is the author's music, without resorting to citation, yet its melody corresponds to metrical patterns, rhythmic and expressive of the jazz style. Equally ingenious are the harmonies specific to African-American music – altered chords, unresolved seventh chords, arpeggios, sound overlaps, etc. As is natural, the improvisational manner has a massive presence in the work, which persists in the illustration of the basic themes.

Symbolic programming, available through software packages, is a useful resource for teaching and learning in upper level professional courses in the undergraduate engineering curriculum. It positively impacts both knowledge and comprehension. The knowledge of required mathematics, previously learnt but easily forgotten, is now available at the fingertips. Symbolic programming makes it accessible through a single line of code. The comprehension is encouraged by visually illustrating the mathematical results through simple graphic commands. Increased knowledge and comprehension improves student’s academic ability, confidence, and maturity. These are necessary drivers of innovation. It takes only a small collection of software commands to deliver these significant improvements in student learning. In this paper we showcase some examples that demonstrate how symbolic programming can be used to service the basic course in aerodynamics. We also highlight the small collection of commands. It is anticipated that every other course in the engineering curriculum that uses mathematics can be completely supported in a similar fashion.
