The methanolysis and hydrolysis kinetics have been studied with the following sulfuric diamide derivatives: N-methyl-N-phenyl- (IIIa), N-methyl-N-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)- (IIIb), N-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)- (IIIc), N-methyl-N-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)- (IIId), N-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)- (IIIe), and N-methyl-N-(2,4-dibromophenyl)- (IIIf). The solvolyses of the neutral substrates IIIa and IIIb proceed by the addition-elimination mechanism. In the presence of the solvent lyate ions the solvolyses go by the E1cb mechanism. The solvolyses of the conjugated bases of compounds IIIa and IIIb are subject to general acid catalysis, the effects of the ring substituents being opposite to those in the addition-elimination mechanism. The solvolyses of compounds IIId and IIIf exhibit a distinct catalytic effect of neighbouring group; the reaction goes via a reactive intermediate, the transformation of the intermediate into the solvolysis product being subject to general acid and base catalysis.

Hepatocarcinogenesis is a multistep process involving different genetic alterations that ultimately lead to malignant transformation of the hepatocytes. Modern treatment of cancer includes chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiotherapy and surgery but they are associated with several adverse effects such as alopecia, fatigue and general weakening of the body’s immune system due to bone marrow suppression. However, there is a continual need to look out for newer drugs to overcome the menace of cancer. In view of this we synthesized the new Coumarin-Cobalt complex derivatives. Structures of all the newly synthesized metal complexes are supported by Spectral data such as IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry. Coumarin-Cobalt complex of vanillin exhibited significant anti-cancer activity by in vivo anticancer activity (BrdU estimation). Immunohistochemical analysis has been done by BrdU and the synthesized compounds were screened for anti-oxidant activity and in vitro HepG2 cell lines. The IC50 values of the HepG2 cell lines as compared with that of standard Cisplatin and compounds IIIb, IIId, IIIe, IIIh and IIIj showed appreciable activity at a concentration less than 10 μG. Coumarin-Cobalt complex of vanillin exhibited significant anti-cancer activity. Anti-oxidant activity performed by Nitric oxide reducing ability, Superoxide dismutase and reducing activity:Compounds IIIc, IIIe and IIIg showed appreciable activity at 400μg/mL and 800 μg/mL screened by nitric oxide reducing ability, superoxide anion was effectively scavenged by compound IIIg at 400μg/mL and 800 μg/mL and reducing power of compounds IIIc and IIIj is comparable with standard ascorbic acid at concentrations 400μg/mL and 800 μg/mL.

Introduction. The state of hypoxia, causing damage and cell death, underlies many pathological processes. In addition, hypoxia induces a state of free radical oxidation, which enhances the damaging effect of hypoxic damage. This necessitates the synthesis of new compounds and the creation on their basis of drugs with antihypoxic activity.Aim. The aim of this study is the synthesis and study of the antihypoxic activity of 2,5-diaryl-8,8-dimethyl-3,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2Н-pyrido[4,3,2-de] quinnolin-3-ones.Materials and methods. Compounds of the 2,5-diaryl-8,8-dimethyl-3,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-pyrido[4,3,2-de]quinnolin-3-ones series were obtained as a result of the interaction of 2-aryl-7,7-dimethyl-5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoline-4-carboxylic acids c o-tolyl-, p-tolyl-, p-fluoro-, p-nitro-, 2,4,6-trichlorophenylhydrazines. As a result, 10 substances were synthesized, the structure of which was confirmed by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The study of the antihypoxic activity of the obtained compounds was carried out using the method of normobaric hypoxia with hypercapnia («hypoxia in a jar»).Results and discussion. The studied compounds have different effects on the lifespan of mice under conditions of acute normobaric hypoxia with hypercapnia. Compounds IIIi and IIId, respectively, increased the lifespan of mice most significantly by 26.36 % and 25.64 %, respectively, compounds IIIa, IIIb, IIIg were less significant, compounds IIIc and IIIf had no effect, and compound IIIj had a prohypoxic effect.Conclusion. Compounds with the most pronounced antihypoxic and antioxidant properties have been identified. Thus, further synthesis and study of 2,5-diaryl-8,8-dimethyl-3,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-pyrido[4,3,2-de]cinnolin-3-ones is reasonable.

This year, the convention’s theme was “The Quest for True Success:The Divine Message of Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad.”IIIT’s intellectual panels dealt with a variety of topics. The first session,“The Concept of Madrasa: Context and Reform,” revolved around EbrahimMoosa’s What Is a Madrasa? (Chapel Hill: University of North CarolinaPress, 2015). Moosa (professor, Islamic studies, University of Notre Dame)reminisced about his time as a madrasa student in India, stating: “The way Icame into India was in a very pietistic orientation, that Islam was all about piety. India and the madrasas taught me that Islam is about thinking ... piety... goodness ... making a contribution to the world.” However, he continued, the “madrasas have done a good job in preserving the identity of traditionalIslam, but it’s unable to make that identity actually work in the real world. ...and that modern knowledge has been closed off from the lived experience ofMuslims.” ...

The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) hosted two consecutivepanels at the annual Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) convention onMay 24, 2015.Ermin Sinanović (director, Research and Academic Programs) openedpanel 1, “Imam & Community Education,” by explaining that IIIT is committedto continuous professional development for imams and community leadersso that they can be effective in the United States. As opposed to the societiesfrom which they come, here they are expected to perform many non-traditionalroles, such as Islamic instruction, interfaith participation, counseling, dealingwith a pluralistic community, and catering to the community’s needs. All ofthese expectations and the difficulties that imams face in trying to fulfill them,he remarked, “explains the high turnover we have at mosques.”Several years ago, IIIT and Hartford Seminary designed a joint GraduateCertificate in Imam and Muslim Community Leadership program to trainimams in the necessary skills. To “bring the Muslim component to the conversationand instill self-respect and confidence in their students,” IIIT helpedHartford Seminary hire Muslim instructors. Each applicant for this 24-hourcredit eight-course program must already possess a BA. The certification providespractical training for counseling in hospitals, prisons, and other settings.Zahid Bukhari (former president, ICNA) acknowledged the huge variationamong imams, especially those “imported imams” who have soundknowledge of Islam but cannot relate to American culture and youth and thusend up essentially leading disconnected lives “in an icloud type atmosphere.”He recommended periodic recertification of imams and community leadersso that they can improve their ability to handle contemporary challenges, andexpressed enthusiasm for the ICNA-IIIT partnership.Timur Yuskaev (director, Graduate Certificate Program in Imam and MuslimCommunity Leadership, Hartford Seminary) commented that many ...

Fittingly, John Esposito (GeorgetownUniversity), al-Faruqi’s first doctoral advisee, delivered the keynote speech:“Reflections on Political Islam: Concepts and Contexts.”An intellectual giant in his own right, Esposito presented a historicalanalysis of the rise of political Islam movements during the latter half of thetwentieth century through his individual interactions, appointments, and presencein spaces of influence at critical times. His keynote speech served bothas an intellectual analysis as well as a personal journey, full of spontaneouslysprinkled firsthand stories and narratives from private conversations. He emphasizedthe critical need to avoid ahistoric analyses of such movements andto resist symptomatic treatments that have become a popular approach bywestern governments blind to their own roles in such undesired behaviors andviolence.Referring to challenges like ISIS and youth radicalization, Esposito statedthat “unless you understand the context within which political Islam arose...:who were the players, what were the issues for these movements, and alsowhat their interactions were with government, you can’t understand why wecontinue to screw up today.” Making specific reference to recent governmentinitiatives on Countering Violent Extremism that are youth-centric and targetthe great role religion occupies in people’s lives, he reminded the audiencethat discounting a history of oppression by western-backed authoritarianregimes is a myopic perspective to the rise of radicalism. His speech spanned over fifty years of political history and Americaninvolvement in Muslim-majority nations with an emphasis on the Iranian ...

His argument proceeded in three steps: (1) justice in the Qur’anmust be situated within the broader “moral narrative” about the spiritualjourney of souls and societies and from which an implicit moral theologycan be detected; (2) that it is possible to build on such Qur’anic indicationsto articulate a theological and ethical system that models it; and (3) that sucha system gives a meaningful epistemological foundation for a hermeneuticsto discover the Qur’an’s basic principles of justice when contextualizedwithin the initial Muslim community led by Prophet Muhammad ...

Abstract Human lambda L chains of a major V lambda subgroup, V lambda III, have been differentiated serologically and chemically into three V lambda III sub-subgroups designated V lambda IIIa, V lambda IIIb, and V lambda IIIc. Antisera prepared against lambda III Bence Jones proteins were obtained that recognized distinctive V lambda III-related epitopes expressed by monoclonal lambda III L chains. After appropriate absorption, these reagents were rendered specific for three distinct populations of lambda III proteins--lambda IIIa, lambda IIIb, and lambda IIIc. The antisera were used in comparative immunodiffusion analyses of 28 monoclonal lambda III L chains, 10 of which were classified as lambda IIIa, 4 as lambda IIIb, and 14 as lambda IIIc. The isotypic nature of the three lambda III sub-subgroups was demonstrated serologically through analyses of lambda-chains derived from the serum IgG molecules of normal individuals. The amino acid sequences of five serologically classified lambda III chains, which included members of the three V lambda III sub-subgroups, had been previously determined. This information, in addition to our establishment of the complete (or virtually complete) V region sequence of 15 and the partial sequence of eight other lambda IIIa, lambda IIIb, and lambda IIIc proteins, made it possible to correlate chemical data with serologic classification. Proteins within each of the three serologically-classified lambda III sub-subgroups typically possessed a high degree (approximately 83%) of intra-sub-subgroup sequence homology that included both framework and complementarity determining region residues. Furthermore, within the framework and complementarity determining regions, sub-subgroup-specific residues were identified. Taken together, these data reveal that the human V lambda III genome consists of (at least) three distinct V lambda IIIa, V lambda IIIb, and V lambda IIIc germline genes that encode for lambda IIIa, lambda IIIb, and lambda IIIc L chains, respectively.

N-Alkylation of IIIa, IIIb, IIId - IIIf and 9-acridanone with 3-bromopropyne in dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of potassium carbonate yielded N-(2-propynyl) derivatives IVa - IVe and VIa, respectively. Ethyl esters IVa, IVb, and IVe were hydrolyzed to IVf - IVh, respectively. Compounds IVf, IVg, IVctreated with bases yielded N-propadienyl derivatives Va - Vc. On the other hand 2-substituted compounds IVd and IVh did not change under the same conditions. Compound VIa treated with powdered potassium hydroxide in dimethyl sulfoxide at room temperature yielded N-(1-propynyl) derivative VII.

1,3,4-oxadiazoles are important because of its versatile biological actions. In the present study, several 2-(quinoline-8-yloxymethyl)-5-aryl-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivates (IIIa-j) have been synthesized by the condensation of 8-hydroxy quinoline acetyl hydrazide (II) with various aromatic acids in presence of phosphorous oxychloride. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds have been established on the basis of elemental analysis, UV, IR, and 1H NMR spectral data. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro growth-inhibiting activity against different strains of bacteria and fungi viz., S aureus, E. Coli, P. aeruginosa, C. Albicans, A. flavus, and A. fumigates, and the results were compared with the standard such as Ampicillin (50µg/ml) using agar diffusion technique. Compounds IIIc and IIIf were found to be equipotent as ampicillin when tested against the strains of E.Coli where as tested compounds IIIc, IIIf and IIIi showed good antibacterial and antifungal activity when tested against the strains of S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and C. Albicans.

Fibronectin (FN) assembly into a fibrillar extracellular matrix is a stepwise process requiring participation from multiple FN domains. Fibril formation is regulated in part by segments within the first seven type III repeats (III1–7). To define the specific function(s) of this region, recombinant FNs (recFNs) containing an overlapping set of deletions were tested for the ability to assemble into fibrils. Surprisingly, recFN lacking type III repeat III1 (FNΔIII1), which contains a cryptic FN binding site and has been suggested to be essential for fibril assembly, formed a matrix identical in all respects to a native FN matrix. Similarly, displacement of the cell binding domain in repeats III9–10 to a position close to the NH2-terminal assembly domain, as well as a large deletion spanning repeats III4–7, had no effect on assembly. In contrast, two deletions that included repeat III2, ΔIII1–2 and ΔIII2–5, caused significant reductions in fibril elongation, although binding of FN to the cell surface and initiation of assembly still proceeded. Using individual repeats in binding assays, we show that III2 but not III1 contains an FN binding site. Thus, these results pinpoint repeat III2 as an important module for FN–FN interactions during fibril growth.

Reactions of 2-hydroxybiphenyl with α,ω-dibromoalkanes gave the 2-(bromoalkoxy)biphenyls IIIa-IIId. The 2-(dimethylaminoalkoxy)biphenyls VIa and VIb were transformed via carbamates VIIa and VIIb to the secondary amines Va and Vb. Their homologues Vc and Vd were obtained from the bromo compounds IIIc and IIId by treatment with methylamine. Bromo compounds IIIa and IIIb were reacted with 1-methylpiperazine, 2-(1-piperazinyl)ethanol, 3-(1-piperazinyl)propanol, and 4-amino-1-benzylpiperidine and gave the diamines VIIIa, VIIIb, IXa, Xa, Xb, and XIa. Addition of 2-hydroxybiphenyl to acrylonitrile afforded the nitrile XIIa. The homologous nitrile XIIb was obtained from the bromo compound IIIb and sodium cyanide in dimethyl sulfoxide. Nitriles XIIa and XIIb were reduced with aluminium hydride to diamines IVb and IVc. The nitriles were also transformed to hydrochlorides of the corresponding ethyl imidates XIVa and XIVb. Their hydrolysis resulted in the esters XVa and XVb. The acid XIIIa was obtained by acid hydrolysis of the nitrile XIIa; the acid XIIIb resulted from the acid hydrolysis of the ester XVb. The imidate XIVb was transformed to the amidine XVIb and to the dihydroimidazole XVIIb. Only the amine Vc showed properties indicative of potential antidepressant.

Background: Isolated dislocation of the ankle with grade III open fracture has been scarcely reported. These ankle injuries usually involved mortise fractures, complete dislocation of the tibial astragaloid joint, capsuloligamentous structure disruption, and severe soft-tissue damage. There is no well-recognized regimen that would result in desirable outcomes. Methods: Sixteen patients with grade III open dislocated ankle fractures were treated immediately with bioabsorbable implants and an external fixator between January 2003 and June 2007. According to the classification system of Gustilo and Anderson, five patients were grade IIIA, seven were grade IIIB, and four were grade IIIC. Surgical interventions included combined internal fixation with bioabsorbable screws/rods and external fixation. Results: Patients underwent clinical and radiologic examination at an average of 18.1 months after surgery. Outcomes were excellent in seven patients (three IIIA, three IIIB, and one IIIC), good in four (one IIIA, two IIIB, and one IIIC), fair in three (one IIIA, one IIIB, and one IIIC), and poor in two (one IIIB, and one IIIC). In the two patients with poor outcomes, bone defect and cartilage exfoliating in the distal tibia were found during surgery. Painful osteoarthritis in the ankle was discovered 2 years after surgery. Another case had pin tract infections in the external fixator 3 months after surgery. There was no case of late deep infection. Conclusions: It may be a reasonable and desirable option that bioabsorbable implants combined with an external fixator be applied for treatment of severe open dislocated ankle fractures. On April 13, 2017, the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) andthe Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) brought jurists, scholars, and professionalsin the field to share their latest research on the topic of adoptionand orphan care. The day-long forum, held at the IIIT headquarters in Herndon,VA, featured one concept paper and five panels. The opening session featured Zainab Alwani (vice chair, FCNA; programdirector, Fiqh Forum on Adoption and Orphan Care; founding director, Islamicstudies, Howard University School of Divinity), who spoke on “Orphan Carein the Qur’an and Sunnah: Critical Reading on Adoption and Kafala.” Statingthat she is providing a framework – not a solution – grounded in the Qur’anand Sunnah, she discussed why the number of orphans and abandoned childrenhas reached an all-time high; why Muslim Americans are reluctant toadopt them; and such concerns as the un-Islamic nature of the American legalsystem and the ensuring legal, cultural, and linguistic problems. She stressedthat taking care of these children is an ethical/moral issue and reminded theaudience of the biographies of Musa, Yusuf, Muhammad, and Maryam, all ofwhom were raised by people who were not their biological parents, and theimportance of the family structure. In closing, she recommended that Muslimsrevive the collective spirit of caring for orphans, work with lawyers to deriveSharia-compliant solutions, integrate these children into our communities, andreconsider some traditional fiqhī concepts (e.g., brother and mawlā). AbubakerAl-Shingieti (executive director, IIIT) chaired.Panel 1, “Voices from the Field,” opened with Ranya Shbeib (co-founder,Muslim Foster Care Association; https://www.muslimfostercare.org), who focusedon meeting orphans’ immediate needs and provide family support. Herorganization works hard to achieve these twin goals and to raise local communityawareness by a four-step process: making a presentation, providingthe relevant orientation, giving practical training, and actually receiving thechild. After each step, unfortunately, the number of interested people declines ...

Abstract: The accuracy of facial recognition has significantly improved thanks to deep learning-based methods. However, several factors including facial ageing, disguises, and position fluctuations impair the efficiency of automatic face recognition algorithms. Disguises are commonly utilized to conceal one's identity or assume the identity of someone else by intentionally or unintentionally altering one's facial features. Here, we intend to make use of the Disguised Faces in the Wild (DFW) small-scale training data. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks(DCNNs) will be trained for general face recognition. The IIIIT-D testing data set will be used for model evaluation because it exhibits greater performance. The IIIT-D testing dataset is used to gauge the effectiveness of the model's performance when applied to faces that have been deliberately disguised. The performance of the results is encouraging and suggests that DCNNs have a chance of successfully recognizing disguised faces.

Understanding of the perception of emotions or affective states in humans is important to develop emotion-aware systems that work in realistic scenarios. In this paper, the perception of emotions in naturalistic human interaction (audio–visual data) is studied using perceptual evaluation. For this purpose, a naturalistic audio–visual emotion database collected from TV broadcasts such as soap-operas and movies, called the IIIT-H Audio–Visual Emotion (IIIT-H AVE) database, is used. The database consists of audio-alone, video-alone, and audio–visual data in English. Using data of all three modes, perceptual tests are conducted for four basic emotions (angry, happy, neutral, and sad) based on category labeling and for two dimensions, namely arousal (active or passive) and valence (positive or negative), based on dimensional labeling. The results indicated that the participants’ perception of emotions was remarkably different between the audio-alone, video-alone, and audio–video data. This finding emphasizes the importance of emotion-specific features compared to commonly used features in the development of emotion-aware systems.

Results of treatment of 112 patients were analyzed. All patients were treated at the Moscow Clinical Hospital named after N.l. Pirogov during the period from 1998 to 2002. Fifty-four patients had I and 11 type, 38 - IIIA, 14 - IIIB and 6 patients - IIIC type of fractures by Gustilo classification. Tactics of treatment was defined by patient's general condition and the degree of soft tissue injury. In fractures of I and II type primary UTN osteosynthesis was preferable; in fractures of IIIA type primary osteosynthesis with AO rod device or Piless device followed by final UTN osteosynthesis were performed. In fractures of IIIB type osteosynthesis was carried out using device. To all patients with fractures of IIIC type the limb amputation was performed. Healing by first intention took place in fractures of I and II type. In fractures of IIIA and IIIB type the open management of wound with following closure during sequential debridement was preferred. When tibia necrosis developed, the resection in fractures zone with following early defect substitution by IHzarov technique was carried out.

The graphical page object detection classifies and localizes objects such as Tables and Figures in a document. As deep learning techniques for object detection become increasingly successful, many supervised deep neural network-based methods have been introduced to recognize graphical objects in documents. However, these models necessitate a substantial amount of labeled data for the training process. This paper presents an end-to-end semi-supervised framework for graphical object detection in scanned document images to address this limitation. Our method is based on a recently proposed Soft Teacher mechanism that examines the effects of small percentage-labeled data on the classification and localization of graphical objects. On both the PubLayNet and the IIIT-AR-13K datasets, the proposed approach outperforms the supervised models by a significant margin in all labeling ratios (1%, 5%, and 10%). Furthermore, the 10% PubLayNet Soft Teacher model improves the average precision of Table, Figure, and List by +5.4,+1.2, and +3.2 points, respectively, with a similar total mAP as the Faster-RCNN baseline. Moreover, our model trained on 10% of IIIT-AR-13K labeled data beats the previous fully supervised method +4.5 points.

Reading Indian scene texts is complex due to the use of regional vocabulary, multiple fonts/scripts, and text size. This work investigates the significant differences in Indian and Latin Scene Text Recognition (STR) systems. Recent STR works rely on synthetic generators that involve diverse fonts to ensure robust reading solutions. We present utilizing additional non-Unicode fonts with generally employed Unicode fonts to cover font diversity in such synthesizers for Indian languages. We also perform experiments on transfer learning among six different Indian languages. Our transfer learning experiments on synthetic images with common backgrounds provide an exciting insight that Indian scripts can benefit from each other than from the extensive English datasets. Our evaluations for the real settings help us achieve significant improvements over previous methods on four Indian languages from standard datasets like IIIT-ILST, MLT-17, and the new dataset (we release) containing 440 scene images with 500 Gujarati and 2535 Tamil words. Further enriching the synthetic dataset with non-Unicode fonts and multiple augmentations helps us achieve a remarkable Word Recognition Rate gain of over 33% on the IIIT-ILST Hindi dataset. We also present the results of lexicon-based transcription approaches for all six languages.

323 Background: To evaluate predictive factors of testicular nonseminoma cancer. Methods: Between 2000 and 2012, 189 patients with testicular nonseminoma cancer were evaluated. Stages according to TNM classification were I, II, and III for 84 patients (60%), 49 (26%), and 56 (30%). The median age of the patients was 31 years (range 18-77 years). Treatment was based on orchiectomy plus chemotherapy (bleomycine/etoposide/cisplatin and vinblastine/ifosfamide/cisplatin) and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy in residual disease. Treatment protocol was updated regularly according to international standards. Overall survival (OS) was evaluated according to the stage, Karnofsky index (KI), and dose intensity of chemotherapy with the Kaplan-Meier method at 5% significance level. Results: There was a significant difference between OS in patient with the different stages (log-rank test, p=0.000), however, detailed analysis revealed that there is significantly worse survival in stage IIIC only (10-years OS for IIIC vs. IIIA+B, 35% vs. 88%, p=0.001) while the difference among IIIB and lower stages was not significant (p=0.383) and 10-years OS was 94%. Dose intensity of chemotherapy proved to be a significant predictive factor for OS in stage IIIA+B patients. Patients with no dose reduction had a significantly higher OS than those with any kind of dose reduction (10-years OS 96% vs. 0%, log-rank test, p=0,000). In stage IIIC, however, the dose intensity had no influence on OS (log-rank test, p=0.167). Unlike dose intensity, in stage III disease KI had no prognostic significance for OS (KI<80 versus KI≥80, Log-rank test, p=0,627) and this is true both for stages IIIA+B and for stage IIIC. Conclusions: Standard of care in testicular nonseminoma cancer offers excellent prognosis with no significant differences in OS for good and intermediate risk groups. On the other hand, outcomes for stage IIIC are poor and further intensification of treatment is warranted. We have found no impact of performance status on OS neither for stage IIIA+IIIB nor stage IIIC. Reduction of chemotherapy dose has a negative impact on OS in patients with stage IIIA+IIIB and should be avoided if possible.

On November 18, 2014, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, founder and board member,IIIT; leader of the Malaysian opposition; and former deputy prime ministerof Malaysia, shared his “Reflections on the Aftermath of the Arab Spring” withthe general public at the IIIT headquarters in Herndon, VA.He opened with “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Apostleand those in authority from among you” (Q. 4:59), which he considers one ofthe Qur’an’s “most used and abused verses.” In addition to being used to supportdemocracy, it is abused by many others to demand the masses’ supportfor dictators, authoritarian, and military junta rule regardless of how they aretreated. This verse also highlights an issue that has rocked the Arab world eversince December 17, 2010, when Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi sethimself on fire to protest the continued abuse and harassment inflicted uponhim by the Tunisian police force: the issue of governmental legitimacy, whichis a problem in both the West and the Muslim world. Anwar stated that thegovernment must represent a majority consensus, respect some process (e.g.,democracy), and allow people the freedom of expression so that they can expresstheir support, disgust, or opposition. The Arabs’ demand for legitimate governance has been on the mind ofIIIT as well, for its leaders have spent the last decade addressing this concernfrom the point of view of the maqāṣid. Anwar traced this concern back to along-ago meeting when several of the IIIT founders were discussing why therewas no Muslim equivalent of the “Western canon,” the “Great Books,” a “greatintellectual tradition.” This was the start of an ongoing process to fill this gapin contemporary Muslim literature. The outbreak of Arab Spring clearly revealed that there is still a need todeal with ethics in governance, for lasting reform can only be actualized inthe form of systems. The ongoing abuse, corruption, repression, and brutalityinflicted upon the people by their own leaders is, according to him, something ...

The review describes the clinical, biochemical and molecular genetic characteristics of autosomal recessive mucopolysaccharidosis type III, or Sanfilippo syndrome. This is a genetically heterogeneous group of rare, but similar in nature, diseases caused by a deficiency of one of the four lysosomal enzymes involved in the degradation of heparan sulfate. All types of mucopolysaccharidosis III are characterized by severe degeneration of the central nervous system in combination with mild somatic manifestations, which is explained by the accumulation of high concentrations of heparan sulfate in the lysosomes of various cells, including the central nervous system. The primary biochemical defect in the most common type of mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA, occurring with a frequency of 1 : 105 and presented in 60% of all cases of the disease, is heparan-N-sulfatase, or sulfamidase deficiency. Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIB type occurs twice less often and accounts for about 30% of all cases of Sanfilippo syndrome. It is caused by the presence of inactivating mutations in the lysosomal -N-acetylglucosaminidase gene. Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIC and IIID are 4% and 6%, and occur at frequencies of 0.7 and 1.0 : 106. Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIC is caused by inactivating mutations in the gene of membrane-bound lysosomal acetyl-CoA:-glucosaminid-N-acetyltransferase, or N-acetyltransferase. Mucopolysaccharidosis IIID is based on the deficiency of lysosomal N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase. The role of experimental models in the study of the biochemical basis of the pathogenesis of Sanfilippo syndrome and the development of various therapeutic approaches are discussed. The possibility of neonatal screening, early diagnosis, prevention and pathogenetic therapy of these severe lysosomal diseases are considered. As an example, a clinical case of diagnosis and treatment of a child with type IIIB mucopolysaccharidosis is presented.

Purpose To assess the benefits of adjuvant high-dose interferon alfa (HDI) treatment for patients with high-risk melanoma. Methods We designed a decision-analytic probabilistic Markov model to simulate the natural history of patients with stage IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC melanoma and evaluate the outcomes with and without HDI treatment. Outcomes were in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). Probability estimates and costs were derived from primary patient level data, while the efficacy of HDI and associated utilities were determined from published reports. The base-case analysis was a cohort of 50-year-old patients. Results HDI increased the median life expectancy in patients with stage III melanoma from 3.75 years in the observation cohort to 4.42 years in the HDI cohort. The difference in QALYs ranged from 0.31 years for stage IIIA patients to 0.60 years for stage IIIC patients treated with HDI. HDI was cost effective in patients with stage IIIB and IIIC melanoma, with ICERs of $95,304 and $76,068 per QALY gained, respectively. Using a threshold of $100,000 per QALY gained, HDI was cost effective for all stage III patients younger than 52 years. HDI was not cost effective for patients with stage IIIA disease and for subsets of patients older than 63 years with stage IIIB disease. Conclusion Our model demonstrates that the probability of HDI being cost effective varies substantially by melanoma substage. HDI showed the greatest benefit in terms of QALYs and was most cost effective in patients younger than 60 years with stage IIIC disease.

<p><strong>Objective: </strong>The present work is designed to synthesise some isomeric new series of Quinazoline-4-one/4-thione derivatives, based on the pharmacophoric model of central nervous system (CNS) activity by structural modifications retaining the essential structural features for the activity and evaluated for their anticonvulsant and CNS depressant properties.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A series of 7-chloro-3-[substituted (amino/phenylamino)]-2-phenyl quinazolin-4 (3H)-one/thione derivatives and 1-(7-chloro-4-oxo/-2-phenylquinazoline-3 (4H-yl)) substituted urea derivatives were prepared. The reaction scheme proceeds through the intermediate 7-chloro-2-phenyl-4H-benzo[d] [1, 3] oxazin-4-one. The structures of the newly synthesised compounds were characterized from infrared (IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectra (m/z) and elemental analysis. The anti-convulsant and CNS depressant activity were investigated by maximum electroshock (MES) seizure test and porsolt’s behavioural despair test (forced swimming) respectively. The rota-rod test was performed to assess any probable changes in motor coordination induced by the test compounds.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The physicochemical and spectroscopic data clearly confirmed the synthesis of quinazoline derivatives with a common skeleton. The synthesised compounds were evaluated for their anticonvulsant and CNS depressant properties. Among them, six compounds <strong>(IIc, </strong>IIg, IIj, IIIc, IIIg, IIIj) exhibited a good activity profile in CNS depressant activity. Five compounds (IIc, IIg, IIj, IIIg, IIIh) showed protection against MES-induced seizures.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The Quinazoline derivatives obtained from this research work indicates that the methyl/methoxy group in phenyl ring, amine and thiourea substitution at 3rd position of quinazoline derivatives are essential for CNS depressant activity as well as anticonvulsant activity. Compounds IIc, IIg, IIj, IIIc, IIIg, IIIj, and IIIh were found to be a potent compound which may be effective as a potential source for the development of CNS depressant and anti-convulsant drugs with lesser side effects</p>
