Kristoffer Schmidt: Christian V’s par force hunt in 17th century’s newspapersThe year 2020 marks the 350th anniversary of the foundation by Christian V of the par force hunt (also known as chasse à courre) in Denmark. This type of hunting was a spec-tacular sight, where riders and a pack of hunting dogs, imported from England, would hunt a selected animal (often a stag) through large, artificially adapted hunting areas such as the open landscapes at Jægersborg Dyrehave or the geometrically shaped hunt-ing routes at Gribskov or Store Dyrehave. After a pursuit lasting usually several hours the animal would collapse from fatigue. The king would then finish off the exhausted beast with a hirschfænger – a large dagger – or a spear. Studies of the royal hunt tend to depict the Danish stag hunt as primarily a means for absolute rulers to showcase a symbolic power. It enabled the absolute ruler to exhibit athletic strength, exemplary riding skills and extreme courage, and thus to paint the picture of a heroic ruler.Although participation in these hunts was limited to a small group of royal hunts-men, court members and foreign guests (for example, ambassadors and royalty), news of the king’s hunting adventures were conveyed through contemporaneous, partly state-controlled newspapers such as Anders Bording’s Den Danske Mercurius and Ahasver-us Bartholin’s Mercurius. This article examines how the royal hunt – primarily the stag hunt – was covered in Den Danske Mercurius and later Mercurius. It reveals that reports on the stag hunt seem to have two main purposes. On the one hand, the newspaper reports underscore the assess-ment of the royal hunts as a symbolic manifestation of power, combining a description of the hunting skills of Christian V with a more general depiction of him as the hero-king. On the other hand, the reports also reveal a need of the Danish-Norwegian absolutist regime to justify the King’s numerous hunting adventures. In several instances Bording, in particular, pointed to the fact that the hunt was considered a pastime for the King and the court. Therefore, Bording and Bartholin stressed that this type of pastime did not interfere with the King’s other, more important duties, such as affairs of state. In other words, the picture of the athletic hero-king did not carry more weight than the image of the King as a capable and efficient ruler. Thus, it appears that the stag hunt, despite its public grandeur, also had a recreational and more private purpose, and that Christian V withdrew from his more formal duties to go hunting.

The article draws upon Minoan 'foundation deposits', focusing on issues such as typology, content, context and interpretation. As Hunt (2006: 128) points out... «foundation rituals were not isolated cult practices but belonged to a cultic koine that existed throughout the ancient Mediterranean». It seems that ‘foundation’ ceremonies are connected with the “initiation” and “consecration” of a building’s life, usually through “religious” as well as “magical” practices including the ritual burial and integration of sacrificial offerings into the “corps” of the building for its everlasting protection and prosperity

The Canadian Digestive Disease Foundation, renamed the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation -- Fondation canadienne pour la promotion de la santé digestive -- in December 2001, is the culmination of ongoing efforts by the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology to establish an independent charitable organization. In February 2001, it was officially endorsed as the Foundation for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. The initial efforts to establish this Foundation, led by Dr Richard McKenna in 1963, were unsuccessful. In 1991, Glaxo Canada (now GlaxoSmithKline) became a founding donor, and with the four founding physicians -- Drs Ivan T Beck, Richard H Hunt, Suzanne E Lemire and Alan BR Thomson -- the expenses to establish the Foundation were met. A charitable number was obtained in 1995 (0997427-11). The second founding donor was Janssen Canada (now Janssen-Ortho), and public education support came from Astra Canada (now AstraZeneca Canada). The Foundation initially relied on corporate donors, but now approaches physicians, patients and the general public. The objectives of the Foundation are to advance the science of gastroenterology and to provide knowledge of digestive diseases and nutrition to the general public, to enhance the quality of life of persons who are afflicted with these disorders. The major achievements of the Foundation are the provision of one-year operating grants to new investigators, which have allowed them to accumulate early data and subsequently obtain support from other major granting organizations. It also provides Fellowships and studentship support grants, in conjunction with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the pharmaceutical industry. The education committee found that there was little research support in this field, considering the large economic burden of digestive disease and the amount of outstanding work done by Canadian researchers. A bilingual Web site, a web-based specialist's discussion program and bilingual pamphlets facilitate public awareness and allow patients to voice concerns.

In this investigation to the author’s own artistic practice, cultural theory and ontology are applied to the notion of ‘wildness’ and ‘safari’ to establish a paradox between what we know and simultaneously will never know about the wild within dominant Western paradigms of thinking. Through her analysis of these contemporary philosophies, the foundation of Halsted’s artwork is explained as a culmination of both performative controlled movements and uncontrolled action. This is achieved through the medium of watercolour that allows for the pigment and representative objects of the non-Western wild to break through oppressive borders and colonial gazes. With the help of the wind, the scent of prey carries across the savannah. As it reaches the predator’s senses, deep feelings in the form of instincts create sudden and necessary action and the hunt begins. Although instincts are embedded within a predator, it has taken much time to develop the skills needed to ensure a successful hunt and there is still no guarantee for victory. Triumph is determined by constant trial and error, a never-ending journey of learning and the lesson always in motion. But who or what is the predator and who or what is the prey? Perhaps this behaviour is literal and confined to the animal hunt; or perhaps extends to human relations and power over others, whether it be other humans, non-humans and environment; perhaps it is about control and freedom; perhaps it can expand to how I feel about myself as being both the victim and perpetrator; or perhaps it is about all I have mentioned. As a Western assumption, the notion of wildness is acknowledged through ongoing interpretation, as a critical concept that points to the limit of our understanding by reminding us that there is something other. That is to say, knowing wildness suggests that there is an unknowing that is wild.

Jörg Widmann is a German composer who is acutely conscious but certainly not in awe of his musical forebears. His best-known string quartet, no. 3 ‘The Hunt’ makes dramatic use of – and has great fun with – Schumann. His 2011 concerto Flûte en suite, performed at the 2014 Proms, more than nods to Bach and baroque elegance. In Armonica, commissioned by the International Mozarteum Foundation to celebrate Mozart's 251st birthday in 2007, Widmann surprisingly and yet unsurprisingly features the glass harmonica, the distinctive instrument that Mozart featured in his own last chamber piece, the Adagio and Rondo for glass harmonica, flute, oboe, viola and cello, K617. Mozart teamed the instrument with the quieter representatives from the wind and string families; Widmann places it against the whole orchestra.

We comment on The Witch-Hunt Narrative ( TWHN) by Cheit. As its first hypothesis, TWHN argues that most of the famous ritual child abuse cases of the 1980s and 1990s were not really witch-hunts at all. In response, we criticize the TWHN definition of a witch-hunt as overly narrow and idiosyncratic. Based on the scholarly literature, we propose 10 criteria for identifying a witch-hunt. We rate four well-known ritual child abuse cases with these criteria and show they were classic witch-hunts. As its second hypothesis, TWHN argues that most defendants in child ritual abuse cases were guilty or probably guilty. In response, we point out many instances in which TWHN has omitted or mischaracterized important facts or ignored relevant scientific information running contrary to its hypotheses. We conclude that TWHN is often factually inaccurate and tends to make strong assertions without integrating relevant scholarly and scientific information. Scholars should approach the book with caution.

Abstract. Comprehension of the image and naming of the spirit of hunt - known as Baai Barylah Bayanai - has high value nowadays. The spirit has an archetypal nature. Hunting today is losing its main function, gradually turning into a social attribute of a modern man. But hunting still has pedagogical potential. The goal of the research is to find out the attitude of the indigenous peoples of Yakutia to this image–phenomenon. A comparison is made between traditional and modern societies. The methods include theoretical analysis, comparison and logical analysis, interdisciplinary approach, sociological research. The author used a step-by-step transformation of the image of the spirit of hunting, outlining its active existence among modern representatives of northern ethnic communities. There is an obvious need to continue the intergenerational transmission of hunting cultural practices and hunting culture/hunting culture. It is established that this image has passed a full cycle of existence in historical and cultural terms. This cycle took place in the following sequence: anima /animus– totem – fetish. Nowadays, the Bayanai spirit is at the beginning of a new cycle of its existence – with an animistic beginning. The theoretical value of the study is to substantiate the process of formation of spiritual culture in the younger generation. The practical significance is in educating young hunters to upbring traditional respectful attitude to the spirit of hunting, the Bayanai.

Objective The objective was to develop an understanding, using the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM), of the factors that could cause a deer hunter to misidentify their intended target. Background Hunting is a popular activity in many communities. However, hunters vary considerably based on training, experience, and expertise. Surprisingly, safety in hunting has not received much attention, especially failure-to-identify hunting incidents. These are incidents in which the hunter, after spotting and targeting their quarry, discharge their firearm only to discover they have been spotting and targeting another human, an inanimate object, or flora by mistake. The hunter must consider environment, target, time of day, weather, and many other factors—continuously evaluating whether the hunt should continue. To understand how these factors can relate to one another is fundamental to begin to understand how incidents happen. Method Workshops with highly experienced and active hunters led to the development of a FRAM model detailing the functions of a “Hunting FRAM.” The model was evaluated for correctness based on confidential and anonymous near-miss event submissions by hunters. Results A FRAM model presenting the functions of a hunt was produced, evaluated, and accepted. Using the model, potential sources of incidents or other unintended outcomes were identified, which in turn helped to improve the model. Conclusion Utilizing principles of understanding and visualization tools of the FRAM, the findings create a foundation for safety improvements potentially through training or safety messages based on an increased understanding of the complexity of hunting.

Though living in the age of Industrialization when the concept of anthropocentricism was prevalent and not a hardcore vegetarian, Thoreau challenged the anthropocentric view of human being’s condescending superiority over animals in Walden. Not only does Thoreau view non-human animals as subjects possessing their own consciousness and sentience, he also regards a consummation of one’s spirituality involves admitting and understanding of one’s inner animality so as to inhibit his savage instinct to hunt or kill animals for food, on the grounds that animals are sentient to feel pain and sufferings and animal food is both unclean and degenerated. Therefore, Thoreau’s humanity to non-human animals inspires and will inspire his modern readers to show more respect for non-human animals and lead them to aspire for a higher stage in their spiritual development. It is in this sense that Thoreau’s concept of animal rights in Walden shakes the solid foundation of anthropocentricism and approximates, if not pioneers, the modern concept of animal rights.

Traditional foods and foodways are a critical part of health and well-being for Alaska Native/American Indian (ANAI) peoples. However, many of these foods are being replaced by ultra-processed foods high in fat, sugar, and sodium. The cultural knowledge needed to gather, hunt, and fish to acquire these foods is not being passed down to younger generations, due to lingering effects of colonialism, leading to poor health outcomes among ANAI peoples. Southcentral Foundation (SCF) and the Center for Indigenous and Health Equity (CIIHE) are using community-based participatory research to identify and prioritize food sovereignty interventions to strengthen the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations and improve ANAI health. Through the implementation of a comprehensive landscape analysis and the development of a community advisory board, SCF has planned an Alaska Native Traditional Foods Gathering to highlight regional efforts to document, revitalize, and share cultural food knowledge and practices to build healthy communities.

Another institutionalisation of public relations and the mistakes made by the guardians of the “spirit of informationism”The article focuses on a new, hypertextual model of public relations created by the author, who confronts it with the practice of information management in contemporary organisations. The theoretical foundation of the concept of public relations proposed by the author can be found in the division which was introduced by the classics J. Grunig and T. Hunt and which has been expanded to include the virtual new media layer of communication as well as an analysis of its impact on corporate dialogue.Despite the fact that the author’s model of information management helps with putting into practice the model of symmetrical bilateral communication — sometimes seen as utopian in the literature on the subject — and turning PR into a function of strategic management, this does not protect organisations from mistakes made by PR specialists. In such a perspective the main aim of the article is to demonstrate the significance of the right choice of PR personnel to an organisation’s communication success.

Students in architectural disciplines need to acquire skills in technical disciplines and design, but also in collaborative practice and self-reflection (AACA, 2021). Exploring these ideas in an authentic space can legitimise their learning activities and provide the foundation to build competencies critical to their future professional practice (Herrington, 2006). In reviewing a core subject in architectural technology at a research-intensive university, we considered the overarching 21st-century graduate attributes as defined by Ng et al. (2022), as well as how students were engaging in the subject, finding a disconnect between lectures and assessment tasks, and limited opportunities to collaborate and build skills progressively. As part of the subject redesign, we aimed to embed constructivist approaches and build students’ confidence within the discipline by providing opportunities to collaborate on authentic, low-stakes, iterative tasks. A high-stakes exam was replaced with weekly authentic ‘treasure hunt’ (TH) activities designed to support student self-reflection, critical thinking, engagement, and skill development and articulated to progress from simple questions (to gain declarative and procedural knowledge within the subject area) towards more complex questions based on pattern recognition and critical thinking (to manipulate information in ways consistent with the learning goals). The new tutorial activities were constructed in digital Miro boards, to which student groups were given edit access to collaborate, prioritising mutual support (Bandura, 1977; Bloom, 1984; Lamb et al., 2022). A 2023 evaluation using surveys and interviews showed most students found TH activities provided meaningful opportunities to interact with peers and teaching staff (51% A lot; 22% Somewhat). They felt their individual learning needs were supported, and their contribution mattered (38% A lot; 27% Somewhat). In interviews, one student highlighted the greater value of collaborative and progressive learning of these activities compared to the final exam: working together on real documentation and finding relevant information consolidated their knowledge and helped them complete their assignments with increased confidence. Overall, the new TH activities enabled learners to make choices and reflect on their learning, including at an interdisciplinary level, by allowing a diversity of outcomes that are open to multiple solutions rather than a single correct response. The focus on collaboration helped students develop negotiation and delegation skills, with tutors assisting and coaching in the learning process. Incorporating a reward-based strategy (low-stake assessments) to promote student engagement proved successful in reinforcing learning and motivating students because, as anticipated by Deci et al. (2001), the extrinsic motivation (the reward) was balanced with the intrinsic challenge of problem-solving tasks, recognising the need for specialist information to fulfil the given tasks and then access the appropriate resources. Digital collaborative workspaces proved successful in creating flexible, equitable learning spaces, allowing students to rework topics at their own pace and build skills outside the pressure of the classroom. Incorporating low-stakes, authentic learning tasks allowed students to explore complex concepts, enhance their skills, and foster collaboration. This is key for technical fields, where establishing a connection with the discipline early in a degree can positively impact students' success.

Cancer is a serious and significantly progressive disease. Next to cardiovascular disease, cancer has become the most common cause of mortality in the entire world. Several factors, such as environmental factors, habitual activities, genetic factors, etc., are responsible for cancer. Many cancer patients seek alternative and/or complementary treatments because of the high death rate linked with cancer and the adverse side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Traditional medicine has a long history that begins with the hunt for botanicals to heal various diseases, including cancer. In the traditional medicinal system, several plants used to treat diseases have many bioactive compounds with curative capability, thereby also helping in disease prevention. Plants also significantly contributed to the modern pharmaceutical industry throughout the world. In the present review, we have listed 33 medicinal plants with active and significant anticancer activity, as well as their anticancer compounds. This article will provide a basic set of information for researchers interested in developing a safe and nontoxic active medicinal plant-based treatment for cancer. The research will give a scientific foundation for the traditional usage of these medicinal herbs to treat cancer.

AbstractT. C. Boyle’s fifteenth novel The Harder They Come (2015) offers a fictional inquiry into the American propensity for violence and takes its title from Jimmy Cliff’s 1972 reggae song and its motto from D. H. Lawrence’s characterization of the “essential American soul [as] hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer” (1978: 68). The article investigates how Boyle creates a metafictional historiography by combining two unrelated historical events – the bare-handed killing of a mugger by an elderly American veteran in Costa Rica and the long police hunt for the schizophrenic murderer Aaron Bassler in the Mendocino Redwoods – with a fictional character who represents the paranoid fringe worlds of sovereign citizens. The article then shows how Boyle embeds his plot in a general atmosphere of menace and incorporates the legend of the heroic mountain man John Colter, thus adding historical depth and evoking the world of wilderness survivalists. It also examines the narrative techniques, such as the choice of a schizophrenic’s point of view, and the stylistic features employed in order to fuse these ingredients into a thrilling tale that reveals the hidden relations between American foundation myths and the threats of contemporary gun violence.

Indigenous social and legal orders are a source for addressing the challenge of overlapping claims in exercising historic treaty rights in the territories of neighbouring non-treaty Indigenous Peoples. The Vancouver Island Treaties (also known as the Douglas Treaties) of the 1850s made commitments that signatory communities could continue to hunt on unoccupied lands and carry on their fisheries as formerly. Today, as urban, agricultural and industrial forestry have constrained where people can exercise their treaty rights locally, individuals from these nations exercise harvesting rights in “extended territories” of their neighbours. Through detailing several court cases where these treaty rights were challenged by the Crown and the texts of modern-day treaty documents, I show how Coast Salish people continue to draw on local values and legal principles to articulate their distinctive vision of territory and community, both engaging and subverting divisive “overlapping claims” discourses. Not only First Nations but the state, through the judiciary, Crown counsel and land claims negotiators, also, at times, acknowledge and recognise the principles of kin and land tenure that are the foundation for addressing the challenges of overlapping claims.

IntroductionCommitment to sports is especially important for well-being in people with disabilities (Malm et al., 2019), although mental health problems are common among Paralympic athletes (Hunt et al., 2019). Importance of representations of and regulation in sport situations was supported for different kind of sports (Moran, 1993, Suinn R., 1982, Hardy et al., 1996) but Paralympic ones.ObjectivesThe aim was to reveal aspects of psychological regulation important for achievement and longer commitment to Paralympic sports comparing to non-Paralympic sports.Methods51 athletes from Paralympic sports (49.1% candidates and masters of sports) filled Questionnaire of Image Representations of Professional Activity of Athletes (Leonov et al., 2020) measuring general importance and self-appraisals of different aspects of image representation and regulation in sport activities: control of temporal, spatial, informational, technical and tactical, energetic aspects, game intelligence, motivational, emotional and social aspects (Cronbach’s alphas .61-.89). Data were compared to 399 athletes without disabilities (48.4% candidates and masters of sports).ResultsComparing to athletes without disabilities, Paralympic athletes higher appraise general importance and their capacities for emotion regulation during sport situation (t=2.26-3.35, p<.01). High-level Paralympic atheletes report marginally better emotion regulation (t=1.74, p<.10). Longer experience in sport in Paralympic athletes is associated with better representations of spatial and social aspects of sport situations and better emotion regulation (r=.25-.29, p<.05).ConclusionsData suggest that improvement of emotion regulation in sport situation in Paralympic athletes could be helpful for longer participation and better achievement. The human adrenal cortex comprises three distinct zones with unique steroid products, namely the zona glomerulosa, which secretes the mineralocorticoids, the zona fasciculate, which secretes the glucocorticoids and the zona reticularis (ZR), which at adrenarche, begins to produce the so-called adrenal androgens. Of all the adrenal zones, we still understand control of ZR emergence the least, and yet the consequences of such dysregulation can be devastating. Premature adrenarche is a growing problem and the correspondingly inappropriate emergence of ZR function can negatively influence puberty and lead to adult infertility. Our understanding is limited and more needs to be done. The purpose of these three reviews is to provide a survey of where we are in our current understanding of what adrenarche is, and indeed if it is unique to humans at all. Furthermore, these reviews describe what is also known of how the functional ZR emerges during adrenarche and what steroids of physiologic relevance result beyond the widely known DHEA and DHEAS elevated at this time. Such advances in human, primate and indeed stem-cell biology are clearly laying the foundation for new directions in the hunt for the factors involved in the regulation and functional emergence of a ZR at the appropriate time, as well as insight into how they may fail. Given support for these new directions, considerable progress can clearly be made.

Purpose of study: The objective of this study is to demonstrate that, when compared to science, religion offers more potent and successful treatments for depression. While healing procedures provided by science are not accessible to everyone, Divine connections' solutions are more affordable and accessible. Methodology: Comparative analysis has been utilized as a methodological framework focusing on individualizing, universalizing, discovering variation, and embracing. As a conceptual framework, Abrahamic religions have been kept in view. The often-employed and highly regarded experimental and observational strategy for comparing studies has been implemented. Findings: Abrahamic religions claim God Almighty is the sole creator of the universe. Since God made human beings and only He knows how humans can live a happy life during their stay on the earth, the ways given to humankind by Him as compared to artificial solutions are the best in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Application of the study: If the search for peace and contentment leads man to hunt for ways how to tune in his internal divine spark with the spark of nature outside to find the best solutions for freeing himself from mental stress and depression, then this study can serve as a foundation stone. Moreover, this article provides some primary material for those who make up their mind to study monotheistic religions (Corrigan et al., 1998) for peace of mind.

The hunt for renewable and alternative fuels has driven research towards the biological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) into biofuels, including bioethanol and biohydrogen. Among the natural biomass utilization systems (NBUS), termites represent a unique and easy-to-access model system to study host–microbe interactions towards lignocellulose bioconversion/valorization. Termites have gained significant interest due to their highly efficient lignocellulolytic systems. The wood-feeding termites apply a unique and stepwise process for the hydrolysis of lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose via biocatalytic processes; therefore, mimicking their digestive metabolism and physiochemical gut environments might lay the foundation for an innovative design of nature-inspired biotechnology. This review highlights the gut system of termites, particularly the wood-feeding species, as a unique model for future biorefinery. The gut system of termites is a treasure-trove for prospecting novel microbial species, including protists, bacteria, and fungi, having higher biocatalytic efficiencies and biotechnological potentials. The significance of potential bacteria and fungi for harnessing the enzymes appropriate for lignocellulosic biorefinery is also discussed. Termite digestomes are rich sources of lignocellulases and related enzymes that could be utilized in various industrial processes and biomass-related applications. Consideration of the host and symbiont as a single functioning unit will be one of the most crucial strategies to expedite developments in termite-modeled biotechnology in the future.

My innovative research into space, its definition, types, and transformation methods has led to the formulation of space transformation laws and space-matter transformation laws. These methods and laws govern the nature of the entire space. In this research, I have covered the entirety of space-time (Spacetime, 2022) and beyond by exploring the "Dimension of the Observable Universe and Beyond." The universe is defined as all space-time and its contents (Universe, 2022). However, several questions remain open regarding higher dimensions (String theory vs Loop quantum gravity: Wild hunt for Quantum Gravity, 2020), singularity (Gravitational singularity, 2022), gravity collapse at the black hole horizon, unified gravity, the theory of everything (Theory of everything, 2022), dark matter (Dark matter, 2022) (What is dark matter made of? Leading theories explained: Axion, Wimp, Machos, 2020), dark energy (Dark energy, 2022) (What is dark energy made of? Quintessence? Cosmological constant?, 2020), and existence beyond the observable universe. These unresolved questions have driven the scientific research on the "Nature of Space and Dimension of Observable Universe and Beyond." My findings indicate that space itself is an entity with physical properties. Space can transform or convert to matter and vice versa. Higher dimensions extend beyond singularities (Gravitational singularity, 2022), the black hole horizon, and the observable universe (Universe, 2022). Several types of research have been conducted, including studies on Minkowski Space (Minkowski space, 2022), General Relativity (Quantum Gravity: How quantum mechanics impacts Einstein’s general relativity, 2020) (General Relativity Explained simply & visually, 2020), Loop Quantum Gravity (String theory vs Loop quantum gravity: Wild hunt for Quantum Gravity, 2020), String Theory (Standard Model, 2022) (String theory vs Loop quantum gravity: Wild hunt for Quantum Gravity, 2020) (String theory, 2022) (Theory of everything, 2022), the Higgs field (Higgs boson, 2022), and the Aether medium (Aether (classical element), 2022). Despite these studies, questions remain regarding higher dimensions, unified gravity, dark matter (Dark Matter, 2022) (What is dark matter made of? Leading theories explained: Axion, Wimp, Machos, 2020), dark energy (Dark energy, 2022) (What is dark energy made of? Quintessence? Cosmological constant?, 2020), the theory of everything, and the space beyond the universe. Research into the existence of matter has shown that space was previously accepted merely as a void or an empty space-time background. However, there have been significant efforts to explore space-time as an entity and investigate higher dimensions through Loop Quantum Gravity (Loop Quantum Gravity Reveals What Came Before the Big Bang, 2018) and String Theory (String theory, 2022). Defining space and exploring the relationship between matter and space have become crucial, particularly in understanding higher dimensions. My research, which reflects the "Dimension of the Observable Universe and Beyond," encompasses all existence within the observable universe and extends beyond it. The definitions of space, types of space, space transformation, and space-matter transformation comprehensively describe the nature of the entire universe. Additionally, the definitions of the GODEYE and GODEYE Models explain the phenomena of universe expansion-contraction and gravity at a fundamental level for the "dimension of the observable universe and beyond." This provides a novel foundation for addressing these open questions and represents a significant advancement in astrophysics and our understanding of existence.

An article by Walter Sullivan in The New York Times of 30 January 1969 speculated that a note discovered by a Russian party on Rudolf Island, Franz Josef Land, was evidence of defection by three members of the Fiala-Ziegler Polar Expedition, 1903–05. Sullivan indicated that the Soviet Novosti news service had reported that the partially decayed note, which was dated 2 July 1904, started: ‘We the opposition’ and was signed by ‘Tess, Veddy, and Ralliet.’ Examinations of the diaries of a member of the expedition and of expedition leader Anthony Fiala's book Fighting the polar ice show that it was impossible for these men to have been together on 2 July 1904, but that they were together a year later, and that they left a note then, at the place where Novosti reported the Russian party to have found one. Fiala and the diary show that the reported version of the note is not consistent with the circumstances at the purported time of the writing. When the note of 1905 was written, the trio was on a mission to assist Fiala. Defection and dissent by this group are contrary to available documents and publications, as well as the text of what is undoubtedly the original note, newly brought to light. In addition, the foundation for the issue of assassination and defection as raised by William Hunt, who referenced Sullivan's story in his book To stand at the Pole, is challenged.

The article analyzes the organization, implementation and impact of the first Russian circumnavigation from 1803 to 1806 from the point of view of Russian America. The Great Northern Expedition discovered Bering Island, the Aleutian Islands and Alaska, laying the foundation for the Russian colonization of the North Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, hunters and fur traders went east through Siberia to the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt for fur animals, they developed the fur trade and founded colonial settlements. In 1803, the Russian government and the Russian-American Company jointly planned and undertook Russia’s first circumnavigation. Russia’s only overseas colony, Russian America, was one of the main travel destinations. Neva, headed by Yu. F. Lysianskyi, stayed in the colonies from July 1804 to September 1805. N. P. Rezanov, manager of the Russian-American Company and chief secretary of the Governing Senate, who visited Japan on Nadezhda, also visited Russian America from May 1805 to July 1806. The sailors stopped the war initiated by the Tlingits in Russian America, eliminated the shortcomings of the policy of the Russian-American Company regarding the natives, developed education in the colonies and established trade from Russian America to California. These activities not only consolidated colonial rule, strengthened Russia’s military power in the North Pacific, and promoted the trade of the Russian-American Company but also heralded the gradual strengthening of government control over the overseas colonies and had a lasting and profound effect on the colonization of Russian America.

How many four-year-olds do you know who like to stomp, wiggle, and shout as they count to one hundred; go on a shape hunt to find examples of spheres, cubes, and rectangular prisms; help finish a story about a fantastic pasta maker by completing complex patterns; create and compare two towers of connecting cubes to figure out whose is taller and by how much; and use a map to locate objects in a room? Our answer is just about every four- and five-year-old we have observed over the past four years while developing the Big Math for Little Kids prekindergarten and kindergarten mathematics program. We began this process in the late 1990s because we were dissatisfied with the current state of early childhood mathematics. We observed teachers exposing young children to little or no interesting mathematics or instructing them to learn skills and concepts that they already knew (Greenes 1999). This observation contrasted with the wide range of mathematical ideas and skills that the children explored and employed during free play (Ginsburg 1999). We examined the historical record and learned that over the past two centuries, early childhood mathematics has gone through brief periods of richness followed by longer periods during which the mathematical interests and abilities of young children were seriously underestimated (Balfanz 1999). Aided by funding from the National Science Foundation, we decided to try to create an early childhood mathematics program that would build on the diverse mathematical interests and rich, implicit understandings of mathematics that young children hold.

This article deals with literary devices that, due to an author’s discretion, arise out of the simple description of a real object or an event. Alexandre Dumas used a technique of this kind in the central novel of his trilogy Queen Margot, La Dame de Monsoreau and The Forty-Five Guardsmen (1845—1848). In La Dame de Monsoreau, Dumas details a hunt, one of the favorite amusements of the royal court of Henry III of France and of the upper nobility. He describes it from the beginning of the exciting action to the end: first, the flushing out of a wild animal, then its pursuit, and, eventually, the kill. The author also describes hunting in the other two novels, but only in La Dame de Monsoreau he turns the description into a lengthy, detailed metaphor with which he persistently correlates the motifs of different storylines. As a result, aside from the plot-event connection (and, as it were, in addition to it), the writer ties his motley, dynamic story together with one allegory, which is reflected in the personalities, actions and fortunes of many characters. Having observed this device in Dumas’s novel, Leo Tolstoy used it in his novel Anna Karenina (1875—1877). There the horse racing scene corresponds to the hunting scenes in La Dame de Monsoreau. Tolstoy attaches importance to the expanded metaphor in his work, and the original and spectacular solution of purely artistic problems becomes a means of embodying a deep social and philosophical concept. The article also refers to a distant echo of the same Dumas trilogy in the last novel by Dostoevsky. Whereas in Dumas’s text we see a description of a real fact, in Dostoevsky’s work it becomes a foundation for a literary device.

In arthropods, a host of studies focused on insect olfactory systems, where most functional proteins including odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs) have been identified. However, in other arthropods such as ticks and mites, genes encoding for OBPs and CSPs are absent. The Niemann-Pick type C2 (NPC2), as a third class of binding proteins, was indicated as potential carriers for semiochemicals and participants in chemical communication. Here, we cloned three full-length NPC2 genes (NbNPC2-1, NbNPC2-2 and NbNPC2-3) from a predatory mite Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and investigated the expression levels of these genes by quantitative real-time PCR. These NPC2 proteins possessed a conserved motif of six cysteines paired in three disulfide bridges with a coincidence to insect OBPs. The 3D molecular modeling of NbNPC2 showed ligand-binding pocket of NbNPC2-1 was composed of a flexible β-structure that contributed to binding to a wide range of potential semiochemicals. Three NPC2 genes all possessed one signal peptide revealed their specific character as secretory proteins. Three NPC2 genes in N. barkeri displayed the highest expression levels in adult males, suggesting a putative role in detecting of the female sex pheromones and highly specific binding to female sex pheromone. The expression levels were lowest in the stage of eggs and increased with developmental stage growing, indicating that NPC2 genes were continuously expressed in post-embryonic stages. NbNPC2-1 in the stage of adult females was expressed 6 and 4 times higher than that of larva and nymph, suggesting NbNPC2-1 might contribute an important role in odor recognition of adult females to hunt for suitable areas for the oviposition and predation. These results showed that NPC2 genes might be involved in chemical communications of adult males, and that NbNPC2-1 preformed specified olfactory functions in adult females. This study provided a foundation for research to determine the roles of NPC2 proteins acting as odorant carrier and involved in chemical communication in phytoseiid mites.

If a given anchor proves to be successful in one context, it may be purposefully employed again and again in highly different circumstances. The foundation of Rome is a case in point: major innovations were repeatedly related to the city’s most distant beginnings, and founders of Rome came to act as mirrors through which the Romans recognized the novelties of the present in a primordial past. A concrete application of this idea is the phenomenon of ‘ktistic renewal’: redefining the concept of foundation, influential agents of innovation could be seen as ‘second founders’ of the city. This epithet was famously applied to the emperor Augustus, comparing him to Romulus. The way his innovative regime was anchored in turn functioned as an anchor for later innovations. In Late Antiquity, the apostles Peter and Paul were also seen as new founders of a reborn, Christian Rome. In both periods, foundational figures thus played a role as anchors to legitimate far-reaching religious and political changes. This article examines the repeated recourse to new and second founders in the Augustan Age and Late Antiquity to highlight the success of one anchoring device in two very distinct contexts. Obviously, such double or incremental anchoring may call for innovation in the use of the anchor itself – and that is exactly what this contribution aims to study.

BackgroundGait retraining has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the peak knee adduction moment (pKAM) in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Since medial-compartment loading has been related to both the pKAM and the peak knee flexion moment (pKFM), reducing the pKAM without pondering the changes in pKFM does not ensure a decreased load in the knee. It is unknown whether combining multiple gait parameters is more effective than isolated gait parameter changes in achieving specific kinetic targets for the pKAM and pKFM.ObjectivesTo characterize the individual changes in the pKAM and in the pKFM in patients with medial KOA walking with a combination of varied gait parameters. We hypothesised that the number of people achieving the dual kinetic change (2KC) of decreasing the pKAM of at least 10% without increasing the pKFM through a combined parameter gait changes is higher than the number of people achieving it through a single gait parameter change.MethodsWe recruited medial KOA patients (K-L I-III) had a diagnosis confirmed through x-ray. A motion capture system and floor-embedded force-plates were used to measure the kinetics (pKAM and pKFM) and the spatio-temporal parameters (foot progression angle (FPA), step width (SW), stride length (SL) and walking speed) during gait. Gait retraining method used was an augmented-reality system. Each patient performed 81 trials combining three different amplitudes of PFA, SW and SL. Gait speed was controlled. The gait modifications were toeing-in by 15° or 10° or normal, walking width narrower (0.10m) or wider (0.15m) or normal SW, and/or walking with shorter (0.10 or 0.15m 0.15m) or normal SL. Descriptive statistics was used. The data of 17 patients, mean 52.7 years old (SD 15.9), mean height 172.9cm (12.8) and mean BMI 24.9 Kg/m2(3.2) was compiled for statistical analysis.Results76.5% of the patients achieved the 2KC with at least one of the combination (Figure 1). Changing one gait parameter led to a 2KC in 7 patients and changing a combination of multiple parameters led to a 2KC in 13 patients. Adding a third to a combination of two gait parameters change “only” added one patient to the total number of patients achieving the targeted 2KC. All patients achieving the 2KC with a single modification were also able to achieve it using two combined modifications. All patients achieving the 2KC with a combination of two gait parameters, achieved it too combining modifications in three parameters. 5.9% of patients achieved the 2KC with a combination of three gait parameters only.ConclusionWhen compared to single-parameter changes, gait-retraining through an augmented-reality setting using a combination of multiple gait parameter changes is more likely to achieve the targeted kinetic changes. Future research should assess the percentage of KOA people retaining the 2KC on both the shorter- and the longer-term.References[1]Gerbrands TA, Pisters MF, Vanwanseele B. The Geological Survey of Canada, the oldest scientific organization in the nation, was founded in 1842, at a time when major changes were taking place in the sciences of geology, chemistry and biology. Geochemistry was not yet recognized as a science in North America, although the word had been coined and the field outlined in 1838 by C. F. Schönbein, the Swiss chemist. Thomas Sterry Hunt (1826-1892) was appointed chemist and mineralogist to the Geological Survey in 1847 by Sir William Logan, first director of the Survey. For the next 25 years Hunt carried out geochemical research on most aspects of the science and added materially to the establishment of various geological principles. Sterry Hunt has been called the "Father of Chemical Geology, or Geochemistry, in North America." Following Hunt, many able men, including B. J. Harrington, F. D. Adams, G. C. Hoffman, and R. A. A. Johnston occupied the position of chemist and mineralogist to the Survey during the period 1872-1922. They were followed by E. Poitevin and H. V. Ellsworth who served from 1922 until 1952. H. V. Ellsworth laid the foundations of 20th Century geochemistry in the Geological Survey. His extensive studies of the distribution of rare elements (e.g., Li, Zr, Nb, U, Th, etc.) in Canadian minerals and rocks, and his studies of geochronology employing uranium-lead methods, had universal significance in geochemistry.

This interview considers Matthew Higgs’s role in programming work by self-taught artists and those with developmental disabilities within the context of White Columns, a non-profit artist-run space located in Chelsea, New York City. The conversation describes the active support of work before any critical or institutional consensus emerges around it and explores how painting by self-taught artists and those with developmental disabilities can provide a productive counterpoint to self-reflexive work or art more critical of the narrative of painting as a medium. The term ‘outsider’ is also scrutinized as a useful generalization for painting that operates outside of conventional forms of education and existing foundational narratives in culture. Also discussed is the impact of exemplary historical curators and dealers in the United States and Germany who serve to act as model ‘maverick iconoclasts’.

Abstract In the paper a procedure and methodology of acceptable calculations of powers, displacements (of amplitudes) and velocities of pulses according to ISO standards depending on the rotational speeds (frequencies) of rotor during attempts of dynamic breaking down taking into account effectiveness of vibration isolation were described. The proposed method is regarding one-sidedly hung rotors appearing in such appliances as rotors of fans, blowers, pumps and others. As permissible parameters of pulses values which are given in international standards PN-ISO-10816-1:1998P and PN-ISO-7919-1:2001 were assumed. Calculations were compared in the form of tables and they depicted with relevant graphs which have the character of useful nomograms. Also, recommendations for the design of the foundations and guidelines related to dimensions of the foundation, the weight and the way of fixing the device were given. In the end also closing remarks and conclusions were given.

Surveillance capitalism is what happened when US democracy stood down. Two decades later, it fails any reasonable test of responsible global stewardship of digital information and communications. The abdication of the world’s information spaces to surveillance capitalism has become the meta-crisis of every republic because it obstructs solutions to all other crises. The surveillance capitalist giants–Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and their ecosystems–now constitute a sweeping political-economic institutional order that exerts oligopolistic control over most digital information and communication spaces, systems, and processes. The commodification of human behavior operationalized in the secret massive-scale extraction of human-generated data is the foundation of surveillance capitalism’s two-decade arc of institutional development. However, when revenue derives from commodification of the human, the classic economic equation is scrambled. Imperative economic operations entail accretions of governance functions and impose substantial social harms. Concentration of economic power produces collateral concentrations of governance and social powers. Oligopoly in the economic realm shades into oligarchy in the societal realm. Society’s ability to respond to these developments is thwarted by category errors. Governance incursions and social harms such as control over AI or rampant disinformation are too frequently seen as distinct crises and siloed, each with its own specialists and prescriptions, rather than understood as organic effects of causal economic operations. In contrast, this paper explores surveillance capitalism as a unified field of institutional development. Its four already visible stages of development are examined through a two-decade lens on expanding economic operations and their societal effects, including extraction and the wholesale destruction of privacy, the consequences of blindness-by-design in human-to-human communications, the rise of AI dominance and epistemic inequality, novel achievements in remote behavioral actuation such as the Trump 2016 campaign, and Apple-Google’s leverage of digital infrastructure control to subjugate democratic governments desperate to fight a pandemic. Structurally, each stage creates the conditions and constructs the scaffolding for the next, and each builds on what went before. Substantively, each stage is characterized by three vectors of accomplishment: novel economic operations, governance carve-outs, and fresh social harms. These three dimensions weave together across time in a unified architecture of institutional development. Later-stage harms are revealed as effects of the foundational-stage economic operations required for commodification of the human. Surveillance capitalism’s development is understood in the context of a larger contest with the democratic order—the only competing institutional order that poses an existential threat. The democratic order retains the legitimate authority to contradict, interrupt, and abolish surveillance capitalism’s foundational operations. Its unique advantages include the ability to inspire action and the necessary power to make, impose, and enforce the rule of law. While the liberal democracies have begun to engage with the challenges of regulating today’s privately owned information spaces, I argue that regulation of institutionalized processes that are innately catastrophic for democratic societies cannot produce desired outcomes. The unified field perspective suggests that effective democratic contradiction aimed at eliminating later-stage harms, such as “disinformation,” depends upon the abolition and reinvention of the early-stage economic operations that operationalize the commodification of the human, the source from which such harms originate. The clash of institutional orders is a death match over the politics of knowledge in the digital century. Surveillance capitalism’s antidemocratic economic imperatives produce a zero-sum dynamic in which the deepening order of surveillance capitalism propagates democratic disorder and deinstitutionalization. Without new public institutions, charters of rights, and legal frameworks purpose-built for a democratic digital century, citizens march naked, easy prey for all who steal and hunt with human data. Only one of these contesting orders will emerge with the authority and power to rule, while the other will drift into deinstitutionalization, its functions absorbed by the victor. Will these contradictions ultimately defeat surveillance capitalism, or will democracy suffer the greater injury? It is possible to have surveillance capitalism, and it is possible to have a democracy. It is not possible to have both.

Political activism by local government is a well known phenomenon in Britain. Less known are the interests affected. In this study, Somerset council's decision to ban hunting clashed with the long standing activities of the Quantock Staghounds. My discussion focuses on the conflict between hunt and council as a conflict of governance in which land rights provided both terrain and techniques of struggle. For the hunt, land rights functioned as a foundational basis for the hunt's authority and legitimacy. For Somerset, their decision to attack hunting through land ownership not only reveals the complex relationship between land and rural state governance, but also placed Somerset's own authority in jeopardy as the courts declared they could not ban hunting on moral grounds. Somerset's land rights were construed by the courts as dependent on pursuing management objectives. Similarly, the hunt's political credibility was also dependent on demonstrating their role in deer management. The paper concludes with the problems of discursively fusing management and governance.

From an evidentiary point of view, the project Ross Cheit seeks to accomplish in his book, The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology, and the Sexual Abuse of Children, is remarkably complex. I examine the methodology that underlies Cheit’s scholarship to assess the strength of his claims. Cheit’s work has a strong methodological core in which he asserts the existence of a “Witch-Hunt Narrative” (WHN), public perception that there are “hundreds” of legal cases involving innocent adults wrongly criminally pursued for child sexual abuse. He identifies three foundational cases in this WHN, McMartin, Michaels, and Fuster, along with dozens of others, which he distills from published lists. Using broadly collected archival and other data, Cheit investigates the veracity of this WHN. He concludes there is insufficient evidence to substantiate the witch-hunt claim. Methodologically, Cheit’s research veers into more problematic territory when he seeks to extend his WHN claims beyond this central core and extend it to the academy, particularly the research of several prominent academics, including psychologists Stephen J. Ceci and Maggie Bruck. I examine these claims and argue Cheit has not paid sufficient attention to the methods and methodology upon which he bases his claims. I conclude by noting the complexity of evaluating evidence produced and utilized in, and across, disciplinary boundaries, including journalism, law, and the academy. Nonetheless, Cheit’s scholarship raises a plethora of important questions and possibilities for future research.

This study traces the fascinating development of the witch archetype, from a vilified character to a potent representation of the tenacity and empowerment of feminism. It reveals how patriarchal civilizations have deftly exploited social conventions and religion to subjugate women through an analysis of foundational literature such as “Malleus Maleficarum”(1487) and “The Witch Cult in Western Europe” (1921). The study employs theories of gender performativity and existential feminism, drawing on the profound insights of notable feminists like Judith Butler and Simone de Beauvoir, to investigate the complex psychological and social foundations of witch hunts and their subtle role in perpetuating gender inequality. It draws attention to how the witch image has been unabashedly revived in contemporary feminist movements as a symbol of empowerment and resistance. This thorough and insightful analysis emphasises how crucial it is to question historical accounts, acknowledge the long-lasting influence of cultural symbols, and forward the admirable cause of gender justice and equality.

This article addresses the current state of film studies as a discipline, profession and institution, arguing that the hunt for cultural authority has been the defining feature, motivating force and tragic flaw of film studies. The current self-reflexive soul- searching reveals that the field – no longer a radical upstart – still lacks the gravitas of more established subjects. Departments have responded to identity crises and changing enrolment patterns by mummifying, killing off or burying foundational emphases. The nostalgia for film studies origins and the jeremiads about an unmanageable, unruly and recalcitrant discipline yield rose-tinted fantasies about community and mutual intelligibility that must be ultimately resisted.

When Samuel Taylor Coleridge read Edward Irving’s sermon in 1825 on the apostolic missionary ideal, he was disappointed that Irving had not met at the outset what would be the main objection of his more cautious antagonists. The absence in modern times of the miraculous gifts of the apostolic missionaries was a problem that, Coleridge felt, hung like a dead weight around the neck of his [Irving’s] Reasoning. They say to themselves To whom Christ commended a supernatural independence of human means and aids, to them in the same commission he delegated superhuman powers … conferred for their performances. This argument Mr Irving should have met at the outset: for the Removal of this obstacle is as the foundation of all he would build up; inasmuch as not being removed it prevents the foundation from being laid.
