Kristoffer Schmidt: Christian V’s par force hunt in 17th century’s newspapersThe year 2020 marks the 350th anniversary of the foundation by Christian V of the par force hunt (also known as chasse à courre) in Denmark. This type of hunting was a spec-tacular sight, where riders and a pack of hunting dogs, imported from England, would hunt a selected animal (often a stag) through large, artificially adapted hunting areas such as the open landscapes at Jægersborg Dyrehave or the geometrically shaped hunt-ing routes at Gribskov or Store Dyrehave. After a pursuit lasting usually several hours the animal would collapse from fatigue. The king would then finish off the exhausted beast with a hirschfænger – a large dagger – or a spear. Studies of the royal hunt tend to depict the Danish stag hunt as primarily a means for absolute rulers to showcase a symbolic power. It enabled the absolute ruler to exhibit athletic strength, exemplary riding skills and extreme courage, and thus to paint the picture of a heroic ruler.Although participation in these hunts was limited to a small group of royal hunts-men, court members and foreign guests (for example, ambassadors and royalty), news of the king’s hunting adventures were conveyed through contemporaneous, partly state-controlled newspapers such as Anders Bording’s Den Danske Mercurius and Ahasver-us Bartholin’s Mercurius. This article examines how the royal hunt – primarily the stag hunt – was covered in Den Danske Mercurius and later Mercurius. It reveals that reports on the stag hunt seem to have two main purposes. On the one hand, the newspaper reports underscore the assess-ment of the royal hunts as a symbolic manifestation of power, combining a description of the hunting skills of Christian V with a more general depiction of him as the hero-king. On the other hand, the reports also reveal a need of the Danish-Norwegian absolutist regime to justify the King’s numerous hunting adventures. In several instances Bording, in particular, pointed to the fact that the hunt was considered a pastime for the King and the court. Therefore, Bording and Bartholin stressed that this type of pastime did not interfere with the King’s other, more important duties, such as affairs of state. In other words, the picture of the athletic hero-king did not carry more weight than the image of the King as a capable and efficient ruler. Thus, it appears that the stag hunt, despite its public grandeur, also had a recreational and more private purpose, and that Christian V withdrew from his more formal duties to go hunting.

The article draws upon Minoan 'foundation deposits', focusing on issues such as typology, content, context and interpretation. As Hunt (2006: 128) points out... «foundation rituals were not isolated cult practices but belonged to a cultic koine that existed throughout the ancient Mediterranean». It seems that ‘foundation’ ceremonies are connected with the “initiation” and “consecration” of a building’s life, usually through “religious” as well as “magical” practices including the ritual burial and integration of sacrificial offerings into the “corps” of the building for its everlasting protection and prosperity

The Canadian Digestive Disease Foundation, renamed the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation -- Fondation canadienne pour la promotion de la santé digestive -- in December 2001, is the culmination of ongoing efforts by the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology to establish an independent charitable organization. In February 2001, it was officially endorsed as the Foundation for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. The initial efforts to establish this Foundation, led by Dr Richard McKenna in 1963, were unsuccessful. In 1991, Glaxo Canada (now GlaxoSmithKline) became a founding donor, and with the four founding physicians -- Drs Ivan T Beck, Richard H Hunt, Suzanne E Lemire and Alan BR Thomson -- the expenses to establish the Foundation were met. A charitable number was obtained in 1995 (0997427-11). The second founding donor was Janssen Canada (now Janssen-Ortho), and public education support came from Astra Canada (now AstraZeneca Canada). The Foundation initially relied on corporate donors, but now approaches physicians, patients and the general public. The objectives of the Foundation are to advance the science of gastroenterology and to provide knowledge of digestive diseases and nutrition to the general public, to enhance the quality of life of persons who are afflicted with these disorders. The major achievements of the Foundation are the provision of one-year operating grants to new investigators, which have allowed them to accumulate early data and subsequently obtain support from other major granting organizations. It also provides Fellowships and studentship support grants, in conjunction with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the pharmaceutical industry. The education committee found that there was little research support in this field, considering the large economic burden of digestive disease and the amount of outstanding work done by Canadian researchers. A bilingual Web site, a web-based specialist's discussion program and bilingual pamphlets facilitate public awareness and allow patients to voice concerns.

In this investigation to the author’s own artistic practice, cultural theory and ontology are applied to the notion of ‘wildness’ and ‘safari’ to establish a paradox between what we know and simultaneously will never know about the wild within dominant Western paradigms of thinking. Through her analysis of these contemporary philosophies, the foundation of Halsted’s artwork is explained as a culmination of both performative controlled movements and uncontrolled action. This is achieved through the medium of watercolour that allows for the pigment and representative objects of the non-Western wild to break through oppressive borders and colonial gazes. With the help of the wind, the scent of prey carries across the savannah. As it reaches the predator’s senses, deep feelings in the form of instincts create sudden and necessary action and the hunt begins. Although instincts are embedded within a predator, it has taken much time to develop the skills needed to ensure a successful hunt and there is still no guarantee for victory. Triumph is determined by constant trial and error, a never-ending journey of learning and the lesson always in motion. But who or what is the predator and who or what is the prey? Perhaps this behaviour is literal and confined to the animal hunt; or perhaps extends to human relations and power over others, whether it be other humans, non-humans and environment; perhaps it is about control and freedom; perhaps it can expand to how I feel about myself as being both the victim and perpetrator; or perhaps it is about all I have mentioned. As a Western assumption, the notion of wildness is acknowledged through ongoing interpretation, as a critical concept that points to the limit of our understanding by reminding us that there is something other. That is to say, knowing wildness suggests that there is an unknowing that is wild.

Jörg Widmann is a German composer who is acutely conscious but certainly not in awe of his musical forebears. His best-known string quartet, no. 3 ‘The Hunt’ makes dramatic use of – and has great fun with – Schumann. His 2011 concerto Flûte en suite, performed at the 2014 Proms, more than nods to Bach and baroque elegance. In Armonica, commissioned by the International Mozarteum Foundation to celebrate Mozart's 251st birthday in 2007, Widmann surprisingly and yet unsurprisingly features the glass harmonica, the distinctive instrument that Mozart featured in his own last chamber piece, the Adagio and Rondo for glass harmonica, flute, oboe, viola and cello, K617. Mozart teamed the instrument with the quieter representatives from the wind and string families; Widmann places it against the whole orchestra.

We comment on The Witch-Hunt Narrative ( TWHN) by Cheit. As its first hypothesis, TWHN argues that most of the famous ritual child abuse cases of the 1980s and 1990s were not really witch-hunts at all. In response, we criticize the TWHN definition of a witch-hunt as overly narrow and idiosyncratic. Based on the scholarly literature, we propose 10 criteria for identifying a witch-hunt. We rate four well-known ritual child abuse cases with these criteria and show they were classic witch-hunts. As its second hypothesis, TWHN argues that most defendants in child ritual abuse cases were guilty or probably guilty. In response, we point out many instances in which TWHN has omitted or mischaracterized important facts or ignored relevant scientific information running contrary to its hypotheses. We conclude that TWHN is often factually inaccurate and tends to make strong assertions without integrating relevant scholarly and scientific information. Scholars should approach the book with caution.

Abstract. Comprehension of the image and naming of the spirit of hunt - known as Baai Barylah Bayanai - has high value nowadays. The spirit has an archetypal nature. Hunting today is losing its main function, gradually turning into a social attribute of a modern man. But hunting still has pedagogical potential. The goal of the research is to find out the attitude of the indigenous peoples of Yakutia to this image–phenomenon. A comparison is made between traditional and modern societies. The methods include theoretical analysis, comparison and logical analysis, interdisciplinary approach, sociological research. The author used a step-by-step transformation of the image of the spirit of hunting, outlining its active existence among modern representatives of northern ethnic communities. There is an obvious need to continue the intergenerational transmission of hunting cultural practices and hunting culture/hunting culture. It is established that this image has passed a full cycle of existence in historical and cultural terms. This cycle took place in the following sequence: anima /animus– totem – fetish. Nowadays, the Bayanai spirit is at the beginning of a new cycle of its existence – with an animistic beginning. The theoretical value of the study is to substantiate the process of formation of spiritual culture in the younger generation. The practical significance is in educating young hunters to upbring traditional respectful attitude to the spirit of hunting, the Bayanai.

Abstract “Learning” gives people the means to grasp and explore their own vision, and new experiences of life, understand and evaluate their surroundings, architecture is the knowledge of explores world and knows oneself. How is constructs actually affects us? Can people have the same experience in the similar environment? How to define Architecture? How to learn? If Architecture not only talking about “Form, space, order. Time, space, substance. Mass and surface. Light and shadow. Space and place.” These concepts combined in the professional dialect might sound like a secret language. Architecture brings together nature, man made environment and people themselves, combines the physical aspects of architecture with the experiential – everyday environment here and now, individual memories, shared meanings and lived history, expectations of the future. Then Architecture education should take which way to bring more different possible to varied learner? The action research through play and experimentation learn in Hut building camps with the Humanistic education foundation. Observing and documenting the living environment, visiting architectural exhibitions and architects at work, telling stories and having opinions, discussing architecture, using their endless imagination to make paintings, drawings and many kind of plans or designs, making models from many different materials ranging from very small details to large imaginary worlds, and finally building something at their own scale. Building huts is a way of realizing both the importance of nature and the importance of the built environment. It is important for children and youngsters to have the opportunity to become involved in discussions about their own surroundings and strengthen personal experience and sensation of influencing the environment. The research using, Jean Piaget’s space cognitive structure theory and Norberg Schulz’s existential space conception, to analyze the positive result of hut building camps with the Humanistic education foundation. And set up the space schema systems. Using Lev Vygotsky’s scaffolding conception to discuss about the role of the Hut building camp members, and what kinds of scaffolding are they offer to children? Corporate and foundation relations development officers (CFRs) play a vital role in philanthropy and resource development within higher education. Specifically, these leaders focus time building relationships with individuals who represent corporations and foundations that are able contribute to the needs and programs of an academic institution (Clevenger, 2014; Hunt, 2012; Sanzone, 2000; Saul, 2011; Walton & Gasman, 2008). CFRs must be intimately familiar with their own institution, organizational priorities, and key leaders to be able to create and orchestrate touch-points, engagement and volunteer opportunities, and mutually beneficial inter-organizational partnerships. CFRs manage a complex intersection of internal constituents' programs and interests while simultaneously trying to meet aggressive signature philanthropic platforms for companies or foundation programmatic initiatives.

Abstract Gregor Mendel, Archibald Garrod, and Francis Galton, the three main characters in the story of medical genetics whose contributions I have described so far, lived in that glorious period when great discoveries could be made by amateur scientists working alone and in their spare time. A priest who discovered the basic principles of heredity while spending his summers breeding peas. A physician with a busy practice and an interest in the chemical composition of urine who applied those principles to human diseases. A gentleman-scholar with a passion for counting who developed statistical techniques for estimating the extent to which heredity contributes to complex human traits. Each of them brilliant. All of them amateurs. Once this foundation was laid the next steps required a new breed of scientists: professionals in universities, with access to students, assistants, and specialized instrum1ents. Among them was another great pioneer, Linus Pauling, once described as “the most brilliantly versatile and productive physical chemist of the [twentieth] century; more than a scientist, a force of nature ”.

This chapter examines how Norman Vincent Peale’s message of practical Christianity intertwined with his conservative politics during the period 1935–1955. It argues that Peale’s populist religion and conservative politics were mutually reinforcing, whose own postwar bid for acceptance, entitlement, and power coincided with the fullest flowering of Peale’s ministry. The chapter first considers Peale’s Toryism and populism, and more specifically how he first warmed to partisan politics through Prohibition, before discussing his involvement with the National Committee to Uphold Constitutional Government and with a politically partisan group called Spiritual Mobilization, his chairmanship of the Christian Freedom Foundation, and his participation in and eventual withdrawal from Facts Forum, the “educational” organization sponsored by Texas oilman H. Abstract Iron Age buildings in lowland Britain, as we have seen, may be constructed exclusively of timber. In upland regions where stone was readily available this was commonly used, especially for the foundations of external walls, but otherwise the design and layout of many of these buildings remain essentially the same as the timber round-houses of lowland Britain. In fact the external stone walls were evidently in many cases little more than foundations to lift the timber superstructure oV the ground, thereby avoiding rotting of timbers. Whether there was an external timber-framed wall mounted on this foundation, or whether the roof-rafters were bedded directly on the low external wall, as shown in Fox’s (1955) reconstructions of Hut 1 and the central house in the Round Pound at Kestor, Devon, remains unclear; the basic principle of construction remains the use of an internal ring of uprights to support the roof. In one instance, from Trevelgue Head at Newquay in Cornwall (Fig. 20), the external foundations of the round-house consisted of alternate orthostats and thin slabs of horizontal dry-stone coursing, which seem almost to simulate the pattern of upright timbers with wattle panels that was doubtless the basis of timber-wall construction throughout lowland Britain.

This chapter examines William Shakespeare's repudiation of the Ciceronian-humanist model through Hamlet's pervasive (and hitherto all but ignored) discourse of hunting, fowling, falconry, and fishing. Within the world of the hunt, the notion of acting—of performing a particular role—is just as important as it is within a stage production. But here the roles one plays are not measured by reason, virtue, propriety, verisimilitude, or even the pleasure they might give to an audience. Instead, one acts to mislead one's predators or one's prey and, just as frequently, to mislead oneself about the appetitive nature of one's existence. The chapter concludes by reading the “cynegetic paradigm” of Hamlet against the natura and fortuna of Senecan revenge tragedy, and proposes that as the hunt governs the way in which the cast of Hamlet interact with one another, Shakespeare uses it to expose the dangerously illusory foundations on which humanist moral philosophy was constructed.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the theories and models based on the exploration of ethical aspects of information technology in higher education. Based on the analysis of literature, three categories of theories have been identified in this field: general theories (the theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behavior, the theory of James Rest), decision making models (the model of Ferrell ?i Gresham, Hunt-Vitell theory (or model) of ethics about ethical decision making in general, Person- situation interactionist model, Bommer's ethical decision-making model, the model of Jones) and information technology models (IT ethical model, the model of unethical usage of information technology, the model of ethical behaviour in computer use, digital piracy attitude model, hypothetical and actual information security compliance models). The general theories have underpinned the later developed models, which have also begun to expand on IT-based models as well. The theory of reasoned action and The theory of planned behavior are the basis for the overwhelming majority of studies on the relationship between attitude, intention and unethical versus ethical behavior. Along with these models, the theories on the stages of moral development can also be considered as they have underpinned the construction of decision models (such as the interactive model) or have provided the foundation for studies related to teachers level of moral reasoning. The result of the analysis of these models will lead to the elaboration of a comprehensive model of factors influencing the attitudes of higher education teachers towards the unethical use of information technology.

<p>This project originates from the need to provide seismic resilient solution for water supply to Wellington and Porirua. With other factors influencing the design, the pipeline crossing must withstand seismic loads including the rupture event of the Wellington Fault with movement of +/-6.5 m parallel to the river stream</p><p>The option study for the pipeline crossing concluded on using a bridge structure spanning the river and the geological Fault. This network arch bridge structure selected is provided with enough movement capacity to withstand the effects of the fault rupture movement without failure.</p><p>The length of the bridge structure is defined so to match the differential rotations between the supports to the allowable limits for the pipeline flex joints. To resist these seismic effects, the structure is provided with seismic restrainers that, at the same time as supporting the seismic load, provide enough rotation capability to accommodate movements on the foundations due to the Fault’s ruptureevent.</p>

Abstract The controlling mechanisms governing the amount of unburned carbon in fly ash from practical pulverized coal combustion systems have been studied by incorporating elements of the carbon burnout kinetic model (CBK) proposed by Hurt et al. in a computational fluid dynamics based combustion, cfd, simulator. An experimental data set from The International Flame Research Foundation are compared to evaluate mechanistic variations in the carbon burnout processes. Simulation results comparing total exit LOI (defined as the residual weight of carbon in the ash) and centerline carbon burnout indicates that use of a char oxidation submodel, including the effects of a statistical reactivity distribution, thermal annealing of active oxidation sites and a developing ash film resistance layer, is necessary to predict experimentally measured exit LOI and centerline burnout profiles.

Abstract In naval architecture and ocean engineering, efficient and accurate generation and propagation of nonlinear waves is an important problem to be solved. Due to the use of pseudo-spectral method and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), High-Order Spectrum (HOS) is an efficient and stable potential flow theory model for simulating nonlinear waves. However, the HOS method cannot consider the effect of viscosity, which makes it difficult to solve the interaction problem between wave and structure. Meanwhile, the CFD method consumes a lot of computational time and resources to solve a large viscous wave field. Therefore, this paper intends to build a HOS and CFD coupling calculation model: The regular and irregular wave fields generated by the HOS method are reconstructed and interpolated, and then the nonlinear wave field information is transmitted to the computational domain from the boundary velocity inlet of the in-house viscous solver HUST-SHIP. The influence of mesh size on coupling is discussed, and the accuracy of the coupling method is validated by simulating various types of waves. The generation of nonlinear wave field and the coupling with viscous flow solver are obtained, which lays a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis of the interaction between nonlinear waves and ships and marine structures.

ABSTRACT Granitic rock subjected to multiple load/unload/reload cycles is observed to have a much lower stiffness on the first loading step compared to subsequent cycles. This apparent work hardening has been proposed to provide unique insight into a rock's stress history, making this mechanism the basis for the core-based in-situ stress estimation method known as Deformation Rate Analysis (DRA). This paper presents cyclic triaxial testing of quarried granite (Cold Spring Charcoal Granite). The basic unit of the experiments is a load/unload/load/unload (LULU) cycle, where the sample is at a constant confining level and the maximum and minimum axial loads are predetermined. For multiple cycles, the peak axial stress for each cycle increases. The experiments show work hardening wherein the slope of the stress-strain relationship is significantly smaller on the first loading cycle (L) compared to the subsequent cycles. When a subsequent cycle is run to a higher peak, the strain difference increases with stress up to the prior value of the peak stress, after which it decreases, exhibiting an apparent memory of the prior peak stress. However, for these short loading cycles, the stress memory is temporary, mostly dissipating after brief unloading to atmospheric conditions and completely dissipating after 24 hours. INTRODUCTION Rock behavior depends upon the stress history of the rock, providing the conceptual foundations for essentially all core-based methods aimed at estimating the stress conditions from which the core was extracted (e.g. Yamamoto et al. 1990, Kang et al. 2000, Villaescusa et al. 2002, Wu and Jan 2010). In the context of the Kaiser effect and Anaelastic Strain Recovery testing, there have been studies showing stress memory can deteriorate with the time since the rock was extracted from the subsurface (Barr and Hunt 1999, Jin et al. 2009). These studies deal with stress memory induced over geological time which can deteriorate over periods of months to years. However, laboratory uniaxial compression testing of rocks is also known to induce changes in the rock which can include work hardening and stress (or strain) memory (e.g. Horibe and Kobayaski 1958, Yamamoto et al. 1990). The memory of an applied stress has been found to diminish slightly with time, but to nonetheless persists for 150 hours or more after a sample is unloaded (Yamamoto 2009). However, past investigations on the topic of observance and persistence of stress memory have been performed at relatively low stress levels under uniaxial conditions. Meanwhile, it has long been known history-dependent behaviors in cyclic loading of rocks depend heavily on confining stress (Zoback and Byerlee 1975). Therefore, this paper is aimed at examining the existence and persistence of stress memory associated with work hardening from laboratory triaxial loading cycles.

On January 19, 2023, the United States hit its debt ceiling, leading to a debt-ceiling crisis. US sovereign debt, for decades, was considered a risk-free investment, but the 2023 US debt ceiling crisis shocked the financial world. The COVID-19 pandemic has hung a heavy burden on public finances. Quarantined economic activity heavily affected state budget revenues all over the world. Before the Covid-19 crisis, there was the 2008 financial crisis with its famous outcomes, when economic stimulus was provided including state budget programs financed by sovereign debts. It was still pandemic circumstances when on 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War. In less than 20 years period the world has had three global-scale crises, but the deterioration social-economic picture is far less dramatic than it will be without state interventions. Nothing is free, it is an obvious and well-known economic axiom, so if the costs of these crises are not on the surface, it means that the problem is hidden somewhere and postponed in time. In a simplified picture we see that states' actions in the field of public finance aren’t rational. When revenues are decreasing, from a household point of view it is normal to turn on some austerity mode and live with less luxury, but different approaches are taken by the states when GDP growth and tax revenues are decreasing. The bright examples of these we saw during the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 crisis. From an economic point of view, loans couldn’t be a source of prosperity. Moreover, sovereign credit puts on long-run burden on the real economy. Money is considered a sign of wealth and prosperity, but actually, in the fractional reserve banking system, it is not the same. For the creation of debt money in the modern credit system, we don’t need savings, we can create it simply from “thin air”. So, an increased volume of money and debt in the economy doesn’t mean prosperity, it means more burden on future generations and the economy at all. The real economy has to pay these debts in the long run future and there it will negatively affect welfare and prosperity. More Fiat money doesn’t create prosperity, prosperity is a result of economic growth and savings. Printing money without proportional economic growth or creating debt money without adequate savings, only exacerbates allocation of resources and wealth. So, money multiplier is not about wealth creation it’s about wealth allocations. Empirical pieces of evidence from the current century showed us that, a crisis is a signal, it is a communication instrument that should be considered correctly and with some scrutiny examinations about its origins and foundations. Tactical solutions can't give strategic outcomes. When empirical evidence shows that instruments used by the state to extinguish crises create much more scaled ones, it’s time for rethinking and structural reforms.

What is a ‘science superpower’? Sarah Main and Graeme Reid explore reactions to the term from stakeholders across the UK and examine alternative versions of a future in which ‘science superpower’ status is achieved. Their report is published today by the Foundation for Science and Technology. Jeremy Hunt, Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson, George Freeman and other senior figures in government use the phrase ‘science superpower’ as a headline for ambitious, visionary science policy. It is a potent phrase but open to varied interpretation. By exploring scenarios in which the UK has achieved ‘science superpower’ status by different means, the authors stimulate debate about the desired characteristics of this status and highlight the choices facing policy-makers on the path to become a more research-intensive UK.
