Abstract Bible concordances lead Bible readers with rendering words and phrases of the Holy Bible in alphabetical listings and show where the terms occur throughout all books of Scripture. With cross-references for verses, concordances make it easy to understand the meaning of terms and the context in which those words are used. In Hungarian Bible studies several translations of the Bible are available (also online) and some of the contemporary translations are provided with on-the-fly concordances. Online versions of the Bible translations can easily build KWIC-concordances but not in an equal way. The study shows different approaches to online Bible concordance of the Hungarian translations to be found online and also tries to illustrate bottlenecks of concordance making on the off-line concordance being built to the so called ÚRK Bible (Újonnan Revideált Biblia – Newly Revised Bible). The obstacles in this concordance are connected with terminological and lexicographic approaches as this concordance is based on translations of the keywords of the ESV Bible Concordance.

The present paper shows how an aligned parallel corpus can be used to investigate the consistency of translation equivalence across the two languages in a parallel corpus. The particular issues addressed are the bidirectionality of translation equivalence, the coverage of multiword units, and the amount of implicit knowledge presupposed on the part of the user in interpreting the data. Three lexical items belonging to different word classes were chosen for analysis: the noun head, the verb give, and the preposition with. George Orwell’s novel 1984 was used as source material as it available in English-Hungarian sentence-aligned form. It is argued that the analysis of translation equivalents displayed in sets of concordances with aligned sentences in the target language holds important implications for bilingual lexicography and automatic word alignment methodology.

Abstract Borders are particular (in-between) spaces: they have this side and the other side, which involve several real and imaginary spaces at the same time. For minorities, “beyond the borders” is also a specific space of language use. This paper discusses the correlations between minority bilingualism and social structure characteristics based on sociological surveys, taking as approach the sociology of space and John Ogbu’s ecological cultural model of schooling. It aims to offer an overview of my research carried out on this topic and tries to provide some references for rethinking the sociological implications of minority education considering the experiences of three decades since the fall of communism in Romania. The main results of this research – in concordance with other findings of similar inquiries – show that a mother-tongue education for ethnic Hungarian children in Romania is a necessary but not sufficient condition for reducing the structural gap that Hungarians in Transylvania have inherited from the 20th century. This study is centred on the aspects of interrelation between the language of education and labour market, more specifically on those linked to the attitudes and patterns of behaviour towards the official language, with particular focus on the role that languages play in the society and, in a narrower sense, in self-positioning on the labour market.

After the Turkish domination three monastic orders, the Jesuits, the Franciscans, and the order of the Hermits of St. Paul took major part at reconstruction, re-Catholicizing, and education in Hungary. Since the Paulines, as the sole order founded in Hungary, used the liturgy of Esztergom from the beginning of the 14th century, researches on 17–18th century music of the order focused mainly on mediaeval relics: survival of plain chant and the so-called Hungarian notation. Information about the musical life and the music of Paulines can be combined from two types of sources: from inventories, diaries, historia domus of dissolved monasteries, and from musical manuscripts (choir-books, organ-books) written and used by Pauline monks. The song repertoire (hymns) of the Baroque and early Classic era had been regarded of lesser value by Hungarian musicologists although Hungarian translations of some of the songs and their concordance with Franciscan manuscripts suggest a widespread use. Hungarian folksongs and melodies rooted in the folk tradition were not foreign to the Pauline practice: P. Gábor Koncz closed his songbook with Christmas carols which were in wide use in Hungarian folk tradition. Some polyphonic pieces also belong to the accurate and authentic picture of Pauline tradition of the 17–18th century. This polyphony requires no professional singers, it is a very simple, folk-like homophony in pastoral manner appropriate to education at schools.

Our aim in this study is to describe the characteristics of sexual development in twins and estimate the role of heritability and environmental factors as causes of certain sexual disorders. Two hundred and ten adult same-sex twin pairs (92 monozygotic [MZ] female, 41 MZ male, 55 dizygotic [DZ] female and 22 DZ male pairs) were involved in the study. Data were collected in 1982 by self-administered questionnaires that included items on sexual maturation, sexual life, contraception, mutual sexual activity within twin pairs and alcohol use. The ratio of married to unmarried twins was nearly the same in MZs and DZs, with the exception that the divorce rate was higher in MZ female twins (14%), and DZ and male twins were slightly more likely to be single. Menarche was later in twins compared to non-twin Hungarian women. 57% of MZs experienced menarche within 3 months of each other, 77% within 6 months while it occurred for 30% and 43% respectively in DZs. The first seminal emission indicated some delay in male twins compared with the Hungarian general population sample. MZ first kisses occurred later than DZ's first kisses. The same was true for the first petting, masturbation and first sexual intercourse. Anorgasmy is 27% heritable but the estimate is not statistically significant. Concordance rate for premature ejaculation in MZs was greater than in DZs but the structural equation model showed significant misfit. Age at menarche appeared to be strongly heritable.

Due to the lack of validated age- and disease-specific instruments, there are limited health-related quality of life measurements in type 1 diabetes youths in Hungary. Objective: To culturally adapt the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ 3.0 Diabetes Module. Method: Feasibility, internal consistency reliability, reproducibility, convergent, discriminant and concurrent validities were evaluated in 134 type 1 diabetes youths. Results: Low scale-level mean percentage of missing item responses, minimal floor and moderate ceiling effects supported the feasibility. Cronbach α exceeded the internal consistency reliability standard of 0.70. Concordance between the children’s and the parents’ reports was strong. The instrument differentiated between the quality of life of patients having acceptable and poor metabolic control. Intercorrelations between the Generic Module and Diabetes Module had moderate to large effect sizes. Conclusions: The results demonstrate the feasibility, reliability and validity of the instrument, but further research should be carried out for generalization for Hungarian population. Orv. Pulmonary excretion of hydrogen and methane after administration of an unabsorbable disaccharide (lactulose) was determined in 228 adult Hungarian twins, 60 monozygous (MZ) and 54 dizygous (DZ) pairs. More than 98% of the subjects (224 of 228) excreted large amounts of hydrogen between 90 and 180 min after lactulose administration. Methane excretion in the fasting state was observed in 124 of 228 of the probands (54.4%), and 68 of 228 (29.8%) produced additional methane in response to lactulose ingestion. In contrast to hydrogen production, both methane excretion and production were significantly more frequent in females than in males. In the total group, and more distinctly in females, the correlation between peak hydrogen and methane concentrations was negative. Twin concordance of fasting methane excretion and lactuloseinduced methane production was near 70% in both MZ and DZ pairs. Heritability estimates of methane excretion and production based on intrapair correlation and variance were smaller than unity, and intrapair correlation coefficients were larger in twin pairs living apart than in those living in the same household. Methane excretion is comparatively frequent in the Hungarian population, and a substantial proportion of fasting methane excreters (55%) produce additional methane from lactulose. The sex difference of methane excretion appears to be characteristic of European populations. The twin data disprove regular Mendelian inheritance of methane production and are suggestive of genetic effects in a multifactorial system.

Background: Anatomic variants of the circle of Willis (CW) are commonly observed in healthy subjects. Genetic and environmental factors influencing these variants remain unclear. Our aim was to assess the genetic and environmental background affecting variant CW phenotypes. Methods: A total of 122 adult healthy twins from the Hungarian Twin Registry (39 monozygotic (MZ) and 22 dizygotic (DZ) pairs, average age 49.7 ± 13.4 years) underwent Time-of-Flight magnetic resonance angiography and transcranial Doppler sonography. We investigated the anterior and posterior CW according to morphological categories. Prevalence and concordance rates of CW variants were calculated. MZ twins discordant for CW variants were analyzed for cardiovascular risk factors and altered blood flow. Results: Complete CW (45.0%) and bilaterally absent posterior communicating artery (PCoA) (22.5%) were the most prevalent variants in the anterior and posterior CW, respectively. There was no significant difference regarding the prevalence of variants across zygosity except for bilaterally hypoplastic PCoA (p = .02). DZ concordance was higher compared to MZ twins regarding morphological categories of the CW. Cardiovascular risk factors were not significantly associated with variant CW in MZ twins discordant to CW morphology. Flow parameters did not differ significantly among MZ twins discordant to CW variants. Conclusion: CW variants may not be determined by substantial genetic effects and are not influenced by altered blood flow in healthy individuals. Further investigations are needed to identify potential environmental factors affecting these variants.

Abstract Accommodation has an important role in the development of tourism in every country we perceive as the tourism destination. Due to the increasing competition in the tourism industry, it is necessary to analyze the occupancy of the accommodation establishments, and thus to find specific segments of the market, which the tourism development strategy should focus on. The aim of this study is to describe, which types of the selected accommodation establishments are preferred in the Slovak Republic by foreign tourists with a special focus on seven specific nationalities (Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Ukrainian, German, Austrian, and Russian nationalities). Formally, the hypothesis being tested is whether there is a statistically significant relationship in the choice of the accommodation establishment by tourists of any of these nationalities over time. In addition, we aim to discuss the development of the selected types of the accommodation establishments in the Slovak Republic in 2014–2017, and at the same time to emphasize the development of the hotels according to hotel classes. The results showed that in the Slovak Republic, the most numerous groups of the accommodation establishments by their type, were hotels, motels, botels, and guesthouses, and these establishments are also the most used by foreign tourists. Furthermore, the set hypothesis has been confirmed, on the basis of the results of Friedman ANOVA and the Kendall coefficient of concordance.

Objective: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) shows a range of severity which is explained in part by the different mutations of the CYP21 gene. To better understand the incomplete concordance between genotype and phenotype in CAH the role of the sensitizing N363S polymorphism of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) was examined in CAH patients. Design: CAH patients were screened for N363S. Laboratory findings and clinical characteristics of carriers and non-carriers were analyzed retrospectively. Methods: The CYP21 gene of 200 CAH patients was analyzed by allele-specific PCR. The GR gene was tested for N363S by PCR followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism. Antropometric data (height, weight), degree of intrauterine virilization, hormone concentrations (17-OH-progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), aldosterone, testosterone, plasma renin activity), substitution doses and clinical course were analyzed. Results: The carrier frequency of N363S in CAH patients was equivalent to that of the general Hungarian population (6% vs 7.8%). Interestingly, none of the non-classical CAH (NC-CAH) patients were carriers of the polymorphism. Carrier girls had milder genital virilization than mutation-matched non-carrier controls. There was no significant difference between the carriers and non-carriers in either the substitution doses, the hormonal, or the auxiological parameters. Conclusions: The association of sensitizing the GR variant with impaired cortisol production in CAH might be compensatory in mild NC-CAH and may prevent severe intrauterine virilization in classical form. Although the exact role of N363S in extrauterine life should be further investigated, the consideration of certain genetic polymorphisms of CAH patients may lead to better, individualized therapeutic regimes.
