This article examines how football, sport and other cultural fields are characterized by complex interrelations between ‘citizen’ and ‘consumer’ identities. Our analysis centres specifically on critically examining and developing the concept of ‘citimer’ (citizen-consumer) with respect to activist supporter groups within European professional men’s football. First, to establish the structural and cultural context for our analysis, we argue that the emergence of citizen-consumer identities in football has been driven by five underlying processes: globalization, commodification, securitization, mediatization and postmodernization. Critical football fan movements have responded to these changes through greater reflexivization and politicization. Second, drawing on the broad academic literature, we develop the concept of the citizen-consumer (or ‘citimer’) and introduce its relevance to football. Third, to provide a more nuanced understanding of the citizen-consumer, we explore how this ‘citimer’ identity is constructed in two ways: ‘from below’ (by fan groups themselves at everyday level) and ‘from above’ (by clubs, governing bodies, media and other powerful forces within the football system). In both instances, we find that the citizen and consumer aspects of the citimer identity are interrelated in complex ways. Fourth, we conclude by highlighting the political reflexivity of citimers and areas for future research. Our analysis draws on extensive data collection: with football supporters and officials in the Czech Republic, England and Italy and at the wider European level, and through access to diverse primary and secondary documents (e.g. policy papers, fanzines and online forums). Our findings may be applied to examine citimer identities, practices and social relations not just within football and sport but in many other cultural fields, such as art, communication, drama, fashion, film and music.

This article reports the results of a content and textual analysis of popular music criticism from the 1960s to the 2000s to discern the extent to which criticism has shifted focus from matters of music to matters of business. In part, we believe such a shift to be due likely to increased awareness among journalists and fans of the industrial nature of popular music production, distribution and consumption, and to the disruption of the music industry that began in the late 1990s with the widespread use of the Internet for file sharing. Searching and sorting the Rock’s Backpages database of over 22,000 pieces of music journalism for keywords associated with the business, economics and commercial aspects of popular music, we found several periods during which popular music criticism’s focus on business-related concerns seemed to have increased. The article discusses possible reasons for the increases as well as methods for analyzing a large corpus of popular music criticism texts.

Radio and the recording business have, since the beginning of the last century, had a profound impact upon existing musical life whenever and wherever they have decisively and irreversibly established themselves. Their arrival restructures and redefines the social relations of music in many aspects of its production, performance and reception. Radio and recording technologies have had a significant impact on the livelihoods of all those who one way or another try to make a living from music (composers, performers and - in Europe - publishers, for instance). Performance itself is transformed as new norms are set in place which call for new levels of technique and interpretation. Finally the conditions of musical reception are reconfigured and new `taste publics' emerge, potentially in conflict with each other, as musical life is totalised into a new and complex unity.

The social economy has played a significant role in the development of QQ Music. To explore the impact of the social economy on QQ Music’s business model, this paper analyses two aspects: first, the type of community and the community demand existed in the platform of QQ Music; second, the procession embodied in QQ Music’s business model to commercialize communities. The study shows that the competitiveness of QQ Music’s business model lies in its platform set-up and user-paid service set-up. The user community sorting mechanism helps QQ Music users find the right community that suits them and fulfills their community needs. The “highly personalized service” and “highly enriched payment scenarios” reflected in the user payment settings can help users achieve an excessive amount of community demand, stimulating user consumption.

Abstract While all music therapists look to the Code of Ethics as a guiding document, music therapists who are self-employed or managing teams rely heavily on this document to create sound business and administrative policies. This article articulates how the 2019 Code of Ethics informs the music therapy entrepreneur or manager to make thoughtful, accountable, and ethical decisions, decreases confusion about specific business practices, and addresses significant concerns related to aspects of the previous AMTA Code of Ethics that were in conflict with federal anti-trust regulations in the United States, including the Sherman Anti-Trust Law. To address the legal and ethical issues inherent in expanding a service business, a discussion guided by the 2019 Code of Ethics and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics (2009) model is provided as a way to think through potential ethical dilemmas when considering subcontracting music therapy services.

In this paper it is argued that the music business should be regarded as an activity trading in information. The paper begins with a review of key themes in the conceptualisation of the music industry within the cultural economies tradition. These are the tensions between creativity and commerce and between global and local processes, and the characterisation of the industry in the terms of the flexible specialisation and reflexive accumulation theses. It is then suggested that these debates have downplayed a key characteristic of the contemporary music industry, its involvement with the creation, production, and distribution of information. The emergence of a global music business over the past decade is documented and analysed by means of this framework. Subsequently, two aspects of the integration processes taking place in the music industry are considered in terms of their relationship to the information economy: copyright protection and branding, and competition between producers of information storage and retrieval devices. The paper concludes that interpreting music as an information industry sheds new light on the music business, and points to important questions for further research within the information economy literature.

Children have a natural curiosity about sound. This is particularly evident in the context of musical play. The potential of play for music learning may be overshadowed by a teacher-led and performance-focused approach to music education rather than an organic, self-initiated approach. By bringing together the child’s natural curiosity about sound, a rich music environment, and effective teacher guidance, the stage is set for building a strong foundation of musical understandings during a child’s first five years, a critical period of the child’s musical development. This article draws attention to and provides examples of ways that musical play can be fostered and enacted in the New Zealand early childhood context. The unique, holistic nature of the New Zealand early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, does not address music explicitly. Rather, aspects of music pedagogies are embedded throughout the document, within a complex weaving together of principles, strands, and goals.

Historically, architectural acoustics has focused on concert halls for European Classical music, even though other genres, including rock, blues, and Jazz, have large groups of followers as well. Additionally, the acoustic requirements for European Classical music differ fundamentally from Jazz and other music. For example, Jazz venues are typically smaller and dryer than a traditional European Classical concert hall. A recent survey showed that reverberation in these venues plays a secondary role to parameters that describe the affordance of a space to allow communication between improvising musicians. This presentation focuses on the unique computational auralization aspects of Jazz venues, including wave-based approaches for smaller enclosures, low-latency requirements, intelligent accompanying systems that can adapt ad-hoc to jazz soloists, and the use of anechoic jazz recordings as source material. The adequacies of different reproduction systems, from higher-order ambisonics and wave-field synthesis to headphone-based systems, will also be discussed. Technological developments in radio, television, the internet, computers, mobile phones and mp3 players shape the ways in which popular music is consumed today. This article examines two intersecting aspects of how today's media landscapes are interwoven into and shape teenage girls' uses of popular music. First, it argues that media technologies shape the girls' uses of music in the context of their everyday lives and the spaces they inhabit. Second, media technologies take part in the girls' practices of gender. For example, through their relations with their brothers and new media technology in the home, the girls are negotiating how to be 'girls', 'daughters' and 'sisters'.

The process of becoming a rock musician strongly relates to the organisational form of the band (Bennett 1980; Green 2002; Behr 2010). At all levels of ambition and success, membership of a band provides the musician with a natural entry point for performing to an audience and forging a potential career (Smith 2013a). The ‘micro-organisational’ (Bennett 2001) development of a band, therefore, is an important career prerequisite for rock musicians (Behr 2015). However, the social and practical challenges of musicianship seem to be continuously underemphasised within the field of popular music studies (Cohen 1993; Kirschner 1998; Lashua 2017; Weston 2017; Kielich 2018). Therefore, in this article I will focus on an aspiring rock band's informal learning processes in becoming a small business together. The study provides insights into the educational and organisational aspects of band practices and contributes to the fields of popular music, education and organisation studies – fields that are converging in the emerging interdisciplinary research area of ‘organising music-making’ (Beech and Gilmore 2015).

German merchant Ernst Jacob Oppert(1832~1903), the mastermind of the “Opert Incident” (It refers to his theft of the royal family’s tomb) has been a rash aggressor and traitorous figure in Korean history. It has also been almost entirely negatively evaluated as a very ambitious merchant who tried to monopolize business by pushing through trade pressure and provided the Joseon government with the pretext of severe Catholic persecution. Unlike this previous evaluation, as a result of this study that analyzed Opert’s wrritten records of Korean music in his travelogue, the need for his re-evaluation as a music critic increased. His music writing was highly complete in both form and content levels, making it reasonable to define it as a “music review”. In particular, he praised Koreans’ own musical ear and music fondness, which seems to have demonstrated insight into their outstanding musicality and love for music, which is considered the driving force of the “Myth of K-pop success” among experts these days. The study illuminated his music historical value as the first Westerner to leave an unprecedented record of “Korean Music Criticism” just before the port opening era, which is expected that a new evaluation will be made only in the history of cultural exchange.

Mathematics is often perceived by students as being difficult. However, when they see how math and music are intimately related, their attitude often changes. Some of the most fundamental aspects of music are described by math. For example, the Circle of Fifths closely reflects musical structure and is used to create scales and chord progressions. The Circle is structured around the mathematical relations of frequency ratios of the corresponding notes in a 12-tone scale. The reactions to music of consonance and dissonance are related to the relative ratios of the notes in a chord or note sequence in a piece. The connection between music and math forms the basis for creating instruments that play the music. I will suggest ways to present these concepts to students for their greater appreciation of music and math.

Published in 1983, David Sudnow’s Pilgrim in the Microworld performs an autoethnographic analysis of videogames that details how he acquires the gestures and postures required by skilled videogame play. While often seen as a curious experiment in early videogame analysis, Sudnow points to a descriptive mode of evaluating videogames that sees the audiovisual and mechanic aspects as irreducibly constituting a holistic embodied experience of the videogame as played. This article highlights the interventions that Sudnow’s under-examined work can provide contemporary critical videogame scholarship to account for how videogames meaningfully fuse embodied gestures with audiovisual spectacle. At a time when scholars are paying increased attention to the embodied aspects of videogame play, this article argues that Sudnow provides a unique opportunity to re-evaluate the expressive potential of videogames as not just ‘digital games’ nor as ‘computer toys’ but as performed, haptically augmented audiovisual media.

Since Thailand's Copyright Act became law in 1979 an indigenous music industry has emerged. In the past, the small recording business was concentrated on two aspects: the sale of imported records and the manufacture of popular, mainly Lukkroong music, and classical records. However, the organisation of the Association of Music Traders – an immediate reaction to the enforcement of the Copyright law – coupled with the advent of cassette technology, has transformed the faltering gramophone trade. Today, middle-class youngsters appreciate Thai popular music in contrast to the previous generation who grew up with western pop and rock. Young people in the countryside have begun to acquire a taste for the same music as well as enjoy a wider range of Pleng Luktoong, the country music with which they identify. How did this change which has resulted in the creation of a new pleasure industry come about? And what are some of the consequences of this transformation.

This essay investigates what I regard as the two main challenges for historical musicology today: where it might be heading in the age of post-critical musicology and how it should react to the age of post-truth whose perceptual and moral relativism paired with its a priori rejection of expertise represents a fundamental challenge to all academic pursuits – a challenge so serious that it needs to be addressed by musicology as much as by all other disciplines in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. Juxtaposing critical musicology and what many call “the music itself” I will undertake this discussion following the structure of the most dialectical of all musical forms, the sonata form – albeit with the proviso that the resulting synthesis cannot consist of the tonic asserting its primacy at the expense of the dominant; there will have to be a more equitable outcome.

Abstract Three newly discovered letters from Muzio Clementi to Gottfried Christoph Härtel make a valuable addition to the known corpus of his correspondence with the Leipzig publisher. Held at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Mus. Slg. Härtel 28–30), these three letters originate in the early years of the second lengthy international trip that Clementi undertook, encompassing the end of 1804 and the first months of 1805, a period when he moved through Germany and settled for a while in Berlin before leaving for his honeymoon in Italy, prior to returning to Berlin. Since the bulk of the extant correspondence between Clementi and Härtel dates from between 1815 and 1822, these letters offer new knowledge about aspects of Clementi’s friendship and business relationship with the German publisher, and about some details of Clementi’s own private life.

In the judge's legal considerations, PT MEIS was declared default because during the holding of the concert / event in the room rented from PT WAIP, they still didn/t have the nuisance permit. But in their legal considerations, the Panel of Judges wasn’t careful enough in determining the legal basis. Then how is the legal certainty regarding to the possession of the nuisance permit in the field of music stadium business? How does the Government play a role in a way to overcoming uncertainty in the aspects of business licensing nowadays? To answer both questions, the author uses a normative research method, supported by statute approach and case approach. Legal certainty has not been achieved because there is an inaccuracy because the Panel of Judges didn’t consider the Governor Regulation of the Jakarta Special Capital Region Number 101 of 2013 which is an implementation instruction from Regional Regulation of the Jakarta Special Capital Region Number 15 of 2011. wherein the Governor Regulation of the Jakarta Special Capital Region Number 101 of 2013 further stipulates the terms of business locations that require a nuisance permit and concerning the nuisance criteria referred to in both of the legal regulations, and when referring to the provisions regarding the business location and the nuisance criteria referred to, PT MEIS doesn’t require an nuisance permit in conducting their business.

Abstract This study seeks to reveal the musical relationship between Bartók’s and Ginastera’s piano compositions, showing stylistic conceptualizations of twentieth-century Western art music which held many interesting musical aspects, specifically in the classical piano repertoire. This musicological research employs stylistic analysis and theoretical analysis to shed some light on Bartók’s and Ginastera’s piano music vocabulary. Following this methodology, it is revealed that Ginastera’s compositional language was very much influenced by the highly unique characteristics of Bartók’s. Such characteristics include the axial system, Bulgarian peasant rhythmic dance, bi-modality, intervallic cell (Z-cell, 0167), hexachordal sets of octatonic collections, the symmetrical old Hungarian pentatonic scale, polychord, quartal chords, hammering-percussive piano style, secundal chords based on ostinato, and many others. In light of this, one may propose that Ginastera’s compositional strategies in piano music were heavily influenced by Bartók’s rhythmic and harmonic idioms, which contributed to the creation of an innovative musical craft.

Le Voir Dit is one of the most fascinating of the works left by the celebrated poet-composer Guillaume de Machaut (d. 1377), and at the same time, as John Stevens has said, ‘one of the most curious documents of the [fourteenth] century’. Through 9000 lines of narrative, sixty-two lyrics in all the main forms (nine of them set to music), and forty-six letters which include comments on the character of the songs and on the business of producing poetry, music and manuscripts, we seem to take a guided tour of Machaut's emotional and professional life over three years of his old age. For more than a century it has proved a rich source of revealing quotations, sustaining many varied arguments. The story it tells of Machaut's literary and emotional affair with a young girl, Peronne, has been read at times as autobiography, at times as fiction; and the incidental comments on composition, performance and copying have been interpreted in studies ranging far beyond Le Voir Dit as evidence of fourteenth-century professional practice. None the less, the constituent parts of the text as they survive in manuscripts from Machaut's circle are disordered, the poem lacks an adequate published edition, and even its music – in size, at least, the most manageable of its components – has yet to be considered as a whole.

It is somewhat surprising that music has only recently become a serious subject for urban historians. Musicologists and music historians, urban geographers, planners and all others who deal with diverse aspects of local development, cultural industry and the built environment have fared much better in tackling the fundamental social implications of music in a particular locality. It is not an accident that, for example, the recent volume ofBuilt Environment, ‘Music and the city’, edited by an economic geographer, Robert C. Kloosterman, deals with urban spaces of creativity and the role of black music today, some of which have by now an ascribed ‘urban’ adjective in North America.1It is also only natural, however, that Kloosterman's enquiry should concentrate on music in the city of the present and rarely venture into the time periods before World War II.

The project aims to fill a significant gap in the scholarly knowledge and understanding of contemporary British musical culture, and to challenge and refine existing record-industry based accounts of music as a creative industry. The articles cover the team's progress in the following areas: the creation of an analytical framework to explore the historical, cultural, and institutional aspects of live music promotion; the development and professionalisation of the British live music industry over the past 50 years, and its changing relationship with the recording industry over the same period; the role of the state in the regulation of live music in the UK; and ethnographic research investigating how live music scenes operate in specific British localities.

Abstract This paper focuses on how digitalisation has influenced actors’ value determination and value creation in the Swedish music market. It draws on the service-dominant logic (SDL) and the service ecosystem perspective to conceptualise value as co-created through the integration of resources by multiple actors in service exchange, enabled and constrained by institutions and institutional arrangements. Empirically, we draw on a qualitative study of the digitalisation of the Swedish music market that consists of fifty-two interviews with various actors. The findings suggest that digitalisation has influenced service engagement and consequently value creation and determination for various actors, and especially for consumers and producers. This paper contributes by integrating SDL and the service ecosystem perspective into music business research in a novel way to promote a deeper understanding of value, value determination, and value co-creation. This paper also contributes to SDL by suggesting that both value-in-exchange and value-in-use are important aspects of value determination and value co-creation.

Jazz music and culture have experienced a surge in popularity after the passage of the Jazz Preservation Act (JPA) in 1987. This resolution defined jazz as a black American art form, thus using race, national identity, and cultural value as key aspects in making jazz one of the nation's most subsidized arts. Led by new cultural institutions and educational programs, millions of Americans have engaged with the history and canon of jazz that represent the values endorsed by the JPA. Record companies, book publishers, archivists, academia, and private foundations have also contributed to the effort to preserve jazz music and history. Such preservation has not always been a simple process, especially in identifying jazz with black culture and with America as a whole. This has required a careful balancing of social and musical aspects of jazz. For instance, many consider two of the most important aspects of jazz to be the blues aesthetic, which inevitably expresses racist oppression in America, and the democratic ethic, wherein each musician's individual expression equally contributes to the whole. Balanced explanations of race and nationality are useful not only for musicologists, but also for musicians and teachers wishing to use jazz as an example of both national achievement and confrontation with racism. Another important aspect of the JPA is the definition of jazz as a “high” art. While there remains a vocal contingent of critics arguing against the JPA's definitions of jazz, such results will not likely see many calling for an end to its programs, but rather a more open interpretation of what it means to be America's music.
