This paper investigates the impact of urbanization in Malaysia and human capital development in Malaysia in particular urbanized areas. We argue that the presence of urbanites at the turn of the 20th century has had a positive impact on human capital in Malaysia today. This is evidenced by empirical evidence using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method by adopting the Índice Firjan de Desenvolvimento Municipal (IFDM) method to calculate the human capital development index in Malaysia. We find that the urbanization program has a positive impact on human capital development in Malaysia.

The purpose of this study is to determine the economic impact of the productive zakat infaq sodaqoh (ZIS) movement based on indigenous wisdom and the use of "coin cans" on the residents of Simping Village, Malang Regency. The Zakat Collector Network (JPZIS) carried out the program campaign for ZIS in Simping Village, Malang Regency. It is one of the local non-profit organizations under the guidance of Lazis NU which accommodates the receipt, management, and distribution of zakat and infaq for the local community with the program "coin cans." This study used a quantitative descriptive method through allocation to collection ratio (ACR) and a logit test. This study uses data from the financial statements of the JPZIS Simping Village, Malang Regency, and the people who have received this program. The results showed that the productive ZIS movement program "coin cans" using the ACR method effectively distributes it. Additionally, the logit test indicates that distribution effectiveness has a positive and significant effect on recipients' income, consumption, and education. The community primarily uses the effect of this income to cover basic daily expenses and school tuition. On the basis of the foregoing analysis, it can be concluded that the ZIS movement is based on indigenous wisdom. If managed professionally and effectively, many regions can use it to boost their local economies.

Wilderness therapy is increasingly seen as a viable treatment alternative for troubled youth, yet there is a noticeable dearth of research comparing the effectiveness of wilderness therapy with more traditional treatment programs. To help address this research need, this study conducted an exploratory analysis of the therapeutic benefits of a wilderness therapy program, Wilderness Quest (WQ), compared to a therapeutic community program, Life-Line (LL). The WQ and LL programs both are based on a 12- step recovery philosophy and emphasize the integral role of the family in adolescent treatment. The study employed a qualitative methodology, beginning with an extended period of observation (approximately eight weeks) in each program. The primary data for the study came from follow-up surveys with youth and their parents which were conducted about 13-15 months after the time of enrollment. Twenty-one families were represented in the study (10 from the WQ program and 11 from the LL program). The WQ program was perceived to be a "pivotal experience" for many youth and the most common reported benefit was increased self-confidence. The most common reported benefit for youth in the LL program was a "pivotal change" in lifestyle, with groups and one-on-one talks with staff and peers being the most beneficial. The study discussed the subtle distinction found with the short-term wilderness program being a " pivotal experience" and the long-term therapeutic community program leading to "pivotal change." The most common reported benefit for families in both programs was an increase in communication and closeness. In the follow-up behavior assessments there were no perceived differences between WQ and LL youth in areas of family relations, school/education, and job/work. There was a slight difference in peer relations with LL youth behaviors slightly more positive than WQ youth, and there was a notable difference in substance abuse with LL youth behaviors being more positive. The data also indicated that certain post-treatment factors were related to youth progress after leaving the programs, with aftercare and association with positive peers being the most in1portant for WQ youth and program graduation and association with positive peers being the most important for LL youth. Interpretive models were developed to illustrate the developmental growth patterns of youth in the two programs.

This research has as fundamental purpose, the generation of strategies for the product development organization in Ford of Mexico; the goal is to increase the capability of the workforce for the development of future work streams. In this thesis, a network model for organizational architectures referred as organizational design structure matrix is used to identify the main interactions among the project teams; this interaction pattern is compared to product interfaces captured in a product DSM model. A case study from Ford Motor Company is utilized; the development is narrowed to the analysis of the front end system of a new CD platform vehicle during the main stages of the product development process. To set up a context for this thesis, I elaborate the product development process from Ford and describe the main design challenges from the case study. In this thesis, I also explain the role that communication plays in an organization due to team geographic location and categories within the organization. DSM concepts and methods are explained to converge further in the application of the product development organization case study. I start the research with the creation of the product DSM for the front end system team through data collection, and interviews with the core engineering group at the company; surrogate data from current production CD vehicles was analyzed. I survey the Ford front end system team to understand the frequency and level of interaction among component teams during the development of the project. Technical maturity level of each team member is collected as well. Additional data from the program management team is acquired to cross reference project team performance with organizational communication. I compare the data set collected with the product architecture DSM to determine mismatches in the organization interactions. In addition, a series of clustering analyses are also compared to improve the team design structure matrix; these results allow us to convey strategies and recommendations to Ford of Mexico organization, to ultimately enhance the product development organization capabilities.

World leaders, policy makers, and scholars are engaged in efforts to improve human development (HD), which, for the United Nations (UN) Development Program, is about allowing people choices in their lives and providing tools with which to make those choices. Success in increasing human development will impact the daily lives of a nationâ s citizens as well as contribute to success in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): eight shared UN goals to improve living conditions of people around the world. The information currently available to those seeking to enhance human development measures focuses on a macro-level approach that advocates first advancing national economic development. Recent research on meeting the MDGs focuses on micro-level individual or community activities. Entrepreneurial and microfinance activity are two such micro-level activities that have been associated in research with advances in national economic development. Microfinance, particularly microcredit, activities have been associated in research with advances in some human development measures. Similar research concerning how entrepreneurial activity may relate directly to human development is lacking. This research project was designed to examine the relationships of these individual activities with human development independent of economic development. Two questions guided this study: (a) Does individual activity (either entrepreneurial or microfinance) have a direct effect on human development, separate from any effect through economic development and (b) If so, do certain types of individual activity (either entrepreneurial or microfinance) have a stronger relationship with some human development measures more than others? Due to data challenges, the scope of this research was restricted to a retrospective study examining measures of entrepreneurial activity with measures of human development. A similar exploration involving microfinance activity is planned for the future. A literature search and content analysis were conducted to determine definitions and measures. Data on nine measures were collected from 44 nations. Analyses indicated that one measure of entrepreneurial activity (own account workers-individuals owning or operating an enterprise, but hiring no employees) does have a statistically significant relationship with one measure of human development (literacy). Guidelines are also offered from lessons learned in navigating the disparate maze of conceptual and measurement issues when researching this territory. With several years remaining in the UN Millennium Development Challenge and the UN Decade of Literacy, this research may have implications for policy makers and world leaders as they seek ways to improve both economic and human development simultaneously.

Resumo:
Studies assessing novice programming proficiency have often found that many students coming out of introductory-level programming courses still struggle with programming. To address this, some researchers have attempted to find and develop ways to better help students succeed in learning to program. This dissertation research contributes to this area by studying the programming processes of students trained through a specific program design curriculum, How to Design Programs (HTDP). HTDP is an introductory-level curriculum for teaching program design that teaches a unique systematic process called the design recipe that leverages the structure of input data to design programs. The design recipe explicitly scaffolds learners through the program design process by asking students to produce intermediate artifacts that represent a given problem in different ways up to a program solution to the problem. Although HTDP is used in several higher-education institutions and some K-12 programs, how HTDP-trained students design programs towards problems, particularly ones with multiple task-components, has not been thoroughly studied. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to gain an understanding and insight into how students use the techniques put forth by the design recipe towards designing solutions for programming problems. I conducted a series of exploratory user studies with HTDP-trained student cohorts from HTDP course instances across two different universities to collect and analyze students’ programming process data in situ. I synthesized findings from each study towards an overall conceptual framework, which serves as a data-grounded theory that captures several facets of HTDP-trained students’ program design process. The main contribution of this work is this theory, which describes: (1) the program design-related skills that students used and the levels of complexity at which they applied these skills, (2) how students’ use of design skills evolve during a course, (3) the interactions between program design skills and course contexts that influenced how students applied their skills, and (4) the programming process patterns by which students approached the programming problems we gave and how these approaches relate towards students’ success with the problems. Using insights from the theory, I describe recommendations toward pedagogical practices for teaching HTDP-based courses, as well as broader reflections towards teaching introductory CS.

Resumo:
The built environment can be structured to encourage or discourage social interaction and can have effects on children's cognitive, social, and emotional development as well as effects on elder's health and well-being. Knowing the profound influence of the built environment on elders (Garin, et al., 2014) and children (Bradford, 2012), the design of intergenerational spaces therefore has the potential to influence the interaction between elders and children engaged in intergenerational programming. Intergenerational care programs present opportunities for cooperation and exchange of skills, knowledge, and experience between people of different age groups (Bradford, 2012; Jarrott, 2011; Kaplan et al., 2002; Newman, 1997). Highlighting the common points and connections between architectural phenomenology and human development theories, this study presents the benefit of developmental theories being applied empirically in architectural design when creating intergenerational facilities in order to enhance the quality of intergenerational interactions. To address this goal, this study examines physical environments that can effectively and efficiently provide intergenerational services. The objectives of this study are to find out (1) whether or not the identification and adaptation of human development theories and architectural phenomenology inform the extension of normative design for intergenerational facilities and (2) in what ways do architectural conditions of an intergenerational space meet the needs of multiple age groups and facilitates interaction. The study uses grounded theory framework to develop a theory related to the influence of spatial design on the quality of intergenerational interactions. To accomplish this, a phenomenological description of different intergenerational spaces was conducted, followed by four to six hours of behavioral/observation mapping of the intergenerational space. The investigator interviewed the architect(s) to ascertain their main ideas and the purpose of designing the building, and the people (participants, educators, coordinators, and facilitators) involved with the intergenerational programs to indicate how the space influences intergenerational interaction. The result of reviewing and analyzing the collected data is a new model of design process grounded in theoretical tenets of personhood and contact theory and applicable for designing intergenerational facilities.

Resumo:
The field of executive coaching has grown in popularity as a developmental tool for leaders. With the potential for a leadership continuity gap and the desire for organizations to strengthen leadership talent pools to prepare for succession planning, there is a need for empirical research regarding the effectiveness of executive coaching. The aim of this mixed method study was to explore the factors that contribute to successful coaching outcomes. The combination of an online survey of 68 high potential leaders and follow up interviews with 40 of those same leaders yielded information about the coaching experience. The results showed a correlation between the number of years a leader was with the company and his or her perception of a positive coaching experience. In addition, the total amount of time the coach and the leader spent together was correlated with the perception of a positive coaching experience. Finally, most leaders noted that exceptional coaches demonstrated professionalism in several ways, such as listening to the client, showing an interest in the client and their development, and providing advice and helpful suggestions. A better understanding of the factors that promote successful outcomes for high potential leaders will assist coaches in having positive impact on client and organizational performance. This study is unique in that it examines coaching in the context of a larger intervention, a leadership development program, using HR professionals as internal coaches with high potential leaders. For organizations using coaching in this fashion, this study addresses gaps in the literature, which was an impetus for this research. Additional research might be valuable on how coaching clients define a successful coaching outcome, a client's readiness to change, the coach-client relationship, and factors that promote sustained behavior change in a leader.

AbstractThis chapter discusses the merits of harmonious relationships between people, society, and nature, and their potential to help address increasing societal vulnerabilities. In recent years, The Chilean National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) has developed the concept of nature bathing, through its Nature for Everyone program. Nature bathing draws from validated programs that have been found to strengthen the immune system and reduce anxiety, depression, and stress, all of which may contribute to greater psychological resilience. Specifically, CONAF’s Nature Bathing program integrates elements of the cosmovision and practices associated with forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku, in Japanese), grounding, and Andean Indigenous and popular culture. Accredited experts facilitate a 2–3-hour experience in a PA, promoting a reflective meditation (mindfulness), that immerses participants in the environment by activating the senses. This chapter reviews the health benefits attributed to spending time in nature and developing direct relationships with nature. Next, we share some practices and traditions being employed around the world to purposefully rebuild human connections with nature. Then, we delve into CONAF’s Nature Bathing initiative, as an example of a transformative program designed to strengthen the role of PAs as public health infrastructure and help visitors build resilience while rediscovering their interconnectedness with nature.

About half of all doctoral students who start a doctoral program do not finish it. A variety of factors internal and external to the student have been studied to determine what factors are associated with a student finishing and not finishing a doctoral program. Several factors have been identified and include both barriers and their counterpart facilitators. Barriers include a lack of motivation, not fully understanding expectations, low self-regulation, poor student-advisor fit, and a lack of social integration. Facilitators include being motivated, understanding expectations well, good student-advisor fit, and sufficient social integration. Strategies for improving doctoral program completion have been proposed that intervene on these factors and have focused on the admissions process, student preparedness, isocial integration, and faculty advisor support, but the effectiveness of such strategies has been less studied. This chapter provides an overview of what is known about facilitators of and barriers to doctoral program completion and proposed and successful strategies for improving doctoral program completion. This overview can serve as a guide for the development of evidence-based strategies for improving doctoral program completion at institutions of higher education.

Abstract Within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Subcommittee 7 (SC-7), Human Factors and Control Facilities, of the Nuclear Power Engineering Committee (NPEC) develops and maintains human factors standards. SC-7 members have extensive expertise in the human factors of nuclear generating facilities. NPEC provides funding for standards development or revision, oversees the activities of SC-7, and has power of approval for standards produced by NPEC subcommittees. IEEE Std 1023-1988 is the upper tier document which defines the human factors tasks required to support the integration of human performance into the design process. The standard was reaffirmed in January 1995 and is to be revised within the next two years. Presently, three lower tier documents, in various stages of development, expand upon the upper tier standard. IEEE Std 845-1988 (in revision) presents methods for measurement of human performance. IEEE Std 1082 (final draft in ballot) deals with the human reliability analysis aspects of probabilistic risk assessment. IEEE Std 1289 presents human factors guidance for design of computer-based display systems. In addition to producing and maintaining human factors standards, SC-7 has sponsored a series of conferences on human factors in power plants. The next one, “Human Factors in Power Generation: A Global Perspective,” will take place in Orlando, Florida, from June 7–12, 1997.

The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) lists 36 industrial design programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Each program is reviewed on a 10-year +/- schedule which can be daunting for some programs considering the speed of advance in the profession and the difficulty/refusal in more experienced faculty to keep current. When reviewed, each school must demonstrate “Essential Competencies, Experiences, and Opportunities” to be NASAD accredited as a school for Industrial Design. However, the list, A-K, has a wide range of necessary competencies, experiences, and opportunities providing each program the academic freedom to teach what they think is necessary in preparing students to practice industrial design. This can be fueled by the local industry, professional and academic backgrounds of the faculty, the mission of the university and specific program, and/or the student population. In addition, NASAD states that all faculty “must be represented and taught primarily by instructors with appropriate industrial design education and professional experience.” Appropriate industrial design education does not, necessarily, mean appropriate educational preparedness when teaching industrial design. Most preparedness comes from experience but experience comes slowly with many advances and setbacks along the way. Just like parameters in an assignment, structure in an Industrial Design Curriculum (IDC) provides educators, new and experienced, the ability to focus on content, thereby, providing opportunity for developing assignments that can support and foster creativity in their students. This paper will reflect upon the exploration of a program undergoing a, roughly, thirty-year curricular review.

As one of the important elements of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) Program Review Model (PRM) proposed by NRC, integrated system validation (ISV) is an evaluation using performance-based tests to identify human engineering discrepancies (HEDs) and improve the design of systems. However, the descriptions of criteria and methodology in HFE PRM are so general that analysts in Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) industry are often encountered with confusions in real cases (Dong et al., 2013). The process of integrated system validation is so tedious and complicated that lots of manpower and time is involved. In addition, many steps of the process are repetitive and exhaustive which can be better managed by computer programs. In this study, a tool kit of ISV for NPP field is developed to support ISV data collection, data extraction and data processing. An analysis report as the output of the tool kit, would conclude results of ISV and provide reference for identifying HEDs. In this article, logic model and requirement analysis of the tool kit is described and a preliminary prototype is developed.

This working papers offers an impact evaluation of two innovative programs cash transfer schemes from the Mexican Government: PROGRESA, which is a national anti-poverty scheme directed at chronic rural poverty, and PROCAMPO, a scheme designed to compensate farmers for the negative price effects of NAFTA. The analysis of data collected for an evaluation of PROGRESA suggests that the overall level of food consumption and health check-ups is lower among PROGRESA households that also participate in PROCAMPO. The overall conclusions are that program conditionality does influence longer-term (human capital) and medium term (productive) investment decisions, the receipt of multiple forms of treatment by beneficiaries can affect the overall impact of each individual program, and conditional transfers may have muted effects among agricultural households in the face of market imperfections.

Covering the full population of applicants to the Jamaican Conditional Cash Transfer Program (PATH), we explore whether receiving PATH since childhood altered the academic gains from attending a more preferred public secondary school. To uncover causal associations, we implement a double regression discontinuity design motivated by both the PATH eligibility criteria and the centralized allocation process to public secondary schools. Among girls, receiving PATH benefits did not influence the academic gains from attending a preferred school. However, boys exposed to PATH experienced significantly lower gains from preferred school attendance with respect to comparable peers who did not receive PATH. These results highlight the relevance of considering both the direct effects of conditional cash transfers and the potential indirect effects that such policies could convey through altering the effectiveness of other related policies.

The 2008-2012 Country Program Evaluation (CPE) concludes that the Bank's program was programmatically aligned with Government's National Plan for Human Development and addressed five areas essential for growth and poverty reduction. The one significant omission in the Bank's program from a development perspective was the lack of attention to governance an area identified as a priority for future strategies by the previous CPE. The Bank played a central role in financing the country's fiscal gap over the CPE period, reflecting increased country demand in the context of the global financial crisis. Nevertheless, time constraints limited the Bank's analytical efforts to identify important policy reforms in the first series of three programmatic policy-based loans, resulting in relatively weak policy content in those loans. Even with significant increases in the level of concessional resources allocated to Nicaragua and greater complexity in programming, the efficiency of program execution improved. In terms of developmental effectiveness, project-level results have generally been poorly documented. Furthermore, the Bank has at times overlooked the issue of recurrent cost financing for services initiated under investment loans, leading to the untimely suspension of programs and undermining the effectiveness of the initial investment. In light of CPE findings, OVE recommends that the Bank: (i) undertake further diagnostic and analytic work to delineate the Bank¿s potential role and value-added; (ii) continue to support improvements in the efficiency of public expenditure, including in the electricity sector; (iii) strengthen the measurement and reporting of results at the project level; (iv) identify potential sources of financing for the continued provision of services beyond project completion; and (v) consider allowing D-2 countries access to emergency lending facilities to meet fiscal needs in times of crisis.

Belize's 2008-2012 Country Strategy approved in June 2009 stated that the IDB would continuously monitor fiscal sustainability and calibrate its financing in accordance with changing country conditions. Rather than establishing specific sectors for IDB support, the Country Strategy identified four development objectives to which it would contribute: (1) ensuring sound fiscal management and public sector transparency; (2) creating or restoring the conditions for sustainable, private sector-led growth; (3) improving human resource development and social protection; and (4) rehabilitating road infrastructure damaged by floods in November 2008. The evaluation will analyze whether program implementation was consistent with the country's development needs and with the objectives laid out in the Country Strategy. The evaluation will use various data sources including interviews with IDB staff, government authorities, people participating in IDB operations, beneficiaries, as well as the review of IDB documents, readily available evaluations, and primary data when available.

We conduct a meta-analysis of 44 studies and 68 different managerial skills training programs, with the aim of identifying program characteristics that can lead to more effective public policies promoting firm growth and entrepreneurship. We synthesize 431 estimates to assess the effects of these programs on firm performance. Our findings show that, on average, managerial skills development programs have positive returns on management practices, firm productivity, profits, and survival. We also examine how program and participant specifications affect program effectiveness. Our analysis suggests that, on average, business training programs focused on human resources, soft skills, marketing, and finance-accounting, especially when organized by local organizations, tend to result in better firm performance. Moreover, training of potential entrepreneurs and managers in specifically targeted sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, or services was more likely to result in improvement compared to non-targeted programs. Finally, our results indicate that programs that involve both male and female participants are more likely to enjoy higher effects from managerial training interventions.

Our genetic and molecular studies have indicated that FIE a WD-repeat Polycomb group (PcG) protein takes part in multi-component protein complexes. We have shown that FIE PcG protein represses inappropriate programs of development during the reproductive and vegetative phases of the Arabidopsis life cycle. Moreover, we have shown that FIE represses the expression of key regulatory genes that promote flowering (AG and LFY), embryogenesis (LEC1), and shoot formation (KNAT1). These results suggest that the FIE PcG protein participates in the formation of distinct PcG complexes that repress inappropriate gene expression at different stages of plant development. PcG complexes modulate chromatin compactness by modifying histones and thereby regulate gene expression and imprinting. The main goals of our original project were to elucidate the biological functions of PcG proteins, and to understand the molecular mechanisms used by FIE PcG complexes to repress the expression of its gene targets. Our results show that the PcG complex acts within the central cell of the female gametophyte to maintain silencing of MEA paternal allele. Further more we uncovered a novel example of self-imprinting mechanism by the PgG complex. Based on results obtained in the cures of our research program we extended our proposed goals and elucidated the role of DME in regulating plant gene imprinting. We discovered that in addition to MEA,DME also imprints two other genes, FWA and FIS2. Activation of FWA and FIS2 coincides with a reduction in 5-methylcytosine in their respective promoters. Since endosperm is a terminally differentiated tissue, the methylation status in the FWA and FIS2 promoters does not need to be reestablished in the following generation. We proposed a “One-Way Control” model to highlight differences between plant and animal genomic imprinting. Thus we conclude that DEMETER is a master regulator of plant gene imprinting. Future studies of DME function will elucidate its role in processes and disease where DNA methylation has a key regulatory role both in plants and animals. Such information will provide valuable insight into developing novel strategies to control and improve agricultural traits and overcome particular human diseases.

The Australian Government is supporting the Government of Timor-Leste in education through the Partnership for Human Development (PHD) and Apoiu Lideransa liuhosi Mentoria no Apredizajen (ALMA). ALMA supports the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) to develop teacher professional learning, particularly in support of its major reform of rolling out and implementing the National Basic Education Curriculum (new curriculum) across schools in Timor-Leste. Under the Teacher Development Multi-Year Study for Timor-Leste (the Study), the Education Analytics Service (EAS) is investigating how ALMA is making a difference to these teaching and learning outcomes. The new curriculum was developed in 2013 as a staged approach for pre-school to grade 6 with a focus on improving literacy and numeracy, as well as reducing student drop out. As presented in this Final Report, there are a number of findings that provide insight into the extent to which teaching practices and student learning outcomes are changing with ALMA’s support of school leaders and teachers and the implementation of the new curriculum. Results from the three years of data collection suggest that the ALMA program has been effective in strengthening elements of teaching quality, curriculum implementation and student learning outcomes.
