Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation deals with the rewritings of Edwardian & Georgian England in contemporary fiction, with a specific focus on J. L. Carr's A Month in the Country, Ian McEwan's Atonement, Julian Barnes's Arthur and George and Pat Barker's Regeneration Trilogy (Regeneration, The Eye in the Door and The Ghost Road). When choosing to go back to England's archetypal places, such as the English pastoral landscape and the “South Country”, “retro-Edwardian” novels question these territories' legitimacy and the ‘origin' of Englishness. Similarly, the English country houses are sometimes perceived as mazes in which their inhabitants get lost when trying to have one last look through their windows. Moreover, the concept of “community” is questioned, through its relationship to the Strange/Familiar dichotomy, in novels that are sometimes written “from the margins”. Gentlemanliness, its definition and ethos are then destabilized and the repression of feelings evoked. Still, regeneration is always deemed possible, whether it be thanks to the “talking cure” or artistic development. Furthermore, novels revisiting Georgian and Edwardian England are strongly metafictional, reflecting on the writing of History where fact and fiction are intermingled in order to create a dialogic relationship with the English literary tradition. Then “rewriting the past” is considered as an ethical enterprise where literature may reconcile such apparently contrasted concepts as postmodernism and humanism

Texto completo da fonteKeeping past under record emerges as a requirement of living in communities. In consequence of this, the primary source of human being as writing the history has been his own experiences. The memories type which has emerged from the need for writing history and the desire of people for transferring their experiences to the generations and which is based on expression of mostly the past and the things one has lived through until the middles of century XVI in the West has shown a change along with the individual who has attempted to discover the world within the scope of that famous "perfectness of human" principle of Enlightenment being directed to his own and started to discover "I". For generally all autobiogaphical writing genres, specially memories, that can be described as a story of "being an individual" in the West from the century XVI to be considered within this description in the Ottoman based on a congregation and a closed society and started to split its ways with the history, it is required to wait for the century XIX, under the influence of Western civilization were laid, the existence of "I" was started to be questioned against and/or beside "individualization" and "we" considered one of the criteria for modernization. During this process, beginning of giving first samples of memories in modern sense and considering memories as a literary genre in connection with the change in people's perception of "I" has happened with the literature of Tanzimat period. In our thesis, while the place of memories genre in Turkish literature and how the transformation of genre during modernization has happened is tried to be revealed in that period

Texto completo da fonteThe 19th century is characterized by the progress of science and medicine: in a positivist society which awards all its trust to scientific reason, the doctor becomes a professional and the therapeutical approach changes. This is also reflected in literature, which undergoes a sort of “medicalization”. Plenty has been written on the relationship between science and literature, the role of literary malaises - most notably neuroses - and on physician-authors; however, one aspect has been neglected by critics: the morality of physician characters in literature. This research focuses on the desire to define the 19th century’s ideal doctor through medical ethics, one which later will become deontology, in a period where historical, cultural and scientific events are profoundly changing the idea of “good” and “evil”.The thesis draws up a catalog of physician characters in Capuana’s narrative work, setting up a moral taxonomy, distinguishing between the “good”, characterized by empathy and professionalism; the “evil”, characterized by selfishness and ignorance; the doctors at margins, anonymous or in absentia (instrumentally); the “mad geniuses” who devote themselves to completely immoral experiments; and the confessor-doctors, who use the power of logos as a new therapeutic approach. The corpus examined here includes part of Capuana’s literary work, between 1867, when his first novel Il dottor Cymbalus was published, and 1911, when the anthology La voluttà di creare was published.Part of this thesis analyses the instrumental role of physician characters, particularly Doctor Maggioli, who appears in many of Capuana’s novels. He acts in the texts as narrator, narrative engine, and plot generator, representing science and rationality, witness and warrantor of truth, but above all, the author’s alter ego. Through Doctor Maggioli, Capuana shows his proclivity towards the idea of morality: on the one hand he condemns the immorality of evil physicians, and on the other he is attracted, in a sense, to the most wicked and diabolical doctors, who dare violate the laws of Nature through science. The idiosyncrasy between morality and experimentation is revealed especially in the “mad genius” characters, protagonists of typically fantastic novels. Fantastic elements in Capuana’s work are very particular when compared to horror novels or Gothic European literature. Capuana’s goal with fantasy is not to frighten his readers, but rather show them another paradigm of reality, one in which the rules of the world’s natural order are upset, and the rationalism of positivist science gives way to unexplainable, absurd, and fantastic phenomena. In this world, ethics have also been upset, and Capuana finds a way to justify the wickedness of his characters. Experiments on human guinea pigs (noticeably women) no longer appear diabolical in the eyes of readers, because they are conceived as possible only in an other, fantastic reality. In conclusion, in Capuana’s work “good” physician characters are quite rare, while “evil” ones are numerous, and even wicked “mad geniuses” are justified in a sense. In fact, Capuana’s position on the subject of morality in sciences is not at all neat nor constant. If in his first novels he allows scientific experimentation in the name of progress, in his more recent anthologies, he aspires for a renewed medicine, following the example of his master, Angelo Camillo De Meis. This medicine sees in the relationship between doctor and patient a new therapeutic approach based on mutual trust and empathy, but also on the respect of human rights and the laws of Nature

Texto completo da fonteThe thesis we present propose a reflection about masculine condition in French literature between the two World Wars. In a France which fights to recover from the First World War while foreseeing more and more surely the approach of the Second one, the man holds a central place, for his manhood intends him to the higher sacrifice. This is the man of these restless times that we have wished to understand better in this work ; we have tried to demonstrate the huge awkwardness implied by the fact of being a man. Along the variations of this major period that goes from 1919 until 1939, the French man feels lost : right after the First World War, forever linked to nightmarish or glorious memories, the soldier become a civilian again, become a man again, is face to a new society in which past hegemony will be from now taken on by the one whose he had always thought she was his inferior : the woman. Through the study of several French novels from 1919 until 1939, we make the analysis of this relentless evolution of masculine condition. Heroes of hackneyed masculinity or antiheroes in a social, psychical or emotional suffering, crude or uncommon instances of masculine identity, the characters of the novels which make up our corpus, whether they show the front trials, the readjustment to civil life ones, or ones generated by the new definition of relationships between both sexes, show, everyone in a different way, the deep intricacy of masculine condition between the two World Wars, between power and overwhelm

Texto completo da fonteIn the thirteenth century, the historical works of the European and Scandinavian domains are especially numerous and give a particulary rich image of the Occidental world. Eleven works were chosen to take into account the diversity of the "historical production" of the thirteenth century: narratives of the Crusades, biographies and kings' sagas, a Song in the honour of a chivalrous hero, and two Icelandic family sagas. These works record the events of a time, and describe the principal actors. These descriptions, often very short, sometimes more elaborate, adding details and anecdotes to impersonal qualifying words, are selected as eulogies and portraits, and analysed to define the human ideal that informed the judgement of the people of the European and Scandinavian domains. Who is described, how, with which qualifying words and in which circumstances? What are the criteria that informed the judgement? Can we perceive an evolution of the mentalities during the century? These are the questions that I tried to answer in order to propose a comparative bilan that discerns the characteristics of the ideal man and the ideal woman of the North and the South, and the common qualities of the persons praised in these two distinct cultural domains

Texto completo da fonteGaskell is thought of as a conformist accepting the victorian norms about women. In fact she systematically, if discreetly, attacks these norms in her fiction. She describes the frustration of women confined to the home and a life without future. She uses her characters to de-structure the stereotypes of the angel and the demon, and the notion of fixed gender. She reveals the internal and external contradictions of all discourses of authoriy. She brings the discourses of women to the centre of things by presenting the criticism they express as valid, and by reporting them without censuring them. Female characters and narrators create a world that is other, shaped by tehir experience as women. Gaskell, closely observing the silences of women, also lets us onto what they never siy. She finally shows how women speak, and speak to ine another, using alternative. If feninism as a demand for equality is always subdued, another feminism is present throughout her work, a feminism that takes for granted that what women think and say is not only valid but essential

Texto completo da fonteAccording to the literary discourses of the second part of the querelle des femmes in france, there are only two types of women : the good and the wicked. The authors who defend the thesis of the superiority of women, just like those who assert their inferiority, present their reasoning and proof according to arguments which conform to the tradition of praise and blame (topoi of etymology, origin, etc. ) often by resorting to the same exempla in order to prove a point or its converse. But according to whether one supports one or the other thesis, the borrowing from and the reverence for the authorial corpus which validates the conclusion (woman is inferior or superior) manifest themselves differently. If it is sufficient to reproduce the "endoxal" discourse to conclude that woman is inferior, the demonstration of the contrary opinion is elaborated in a space of "vide auctorial" (authorial void) : the middle term which permits this conclusion is not attested and, further, such a conclusion cannot be expressed without having carried out a detailed exegesis of those texts which advocate the inferiority of women (such as genesis), while referring to those authorities which validate the modalities of this interpretation and the argumentative forms which permit it to be articulated; if the middle term is not itself "authorized", at least the forms and modalities of its articulation must be so. During a period in which new parameters - or new readings of established parameters - modify little by little astronomical, geographic, medical, judical, political, and religious conceptions, the literary field becomes the breeding ground of significant preoccupations concerning the nature of woman, of her social function, and, through her, of the importance of the couple and of the family all the while questioning the argumentative modalities which allow one to comprehend and to define her essence, that which she represents and implies in the order of human nature and world harmony

Texto completo da fonteOur research deals with gender relations in the work of Sabahattin Ali, writer of the republican period (1907-1948) and pioneer of the style of social realism. This research is divided into two parts. In the first part, we talk about the life of the writer as well as the political and social situations of Kemalist Turkey. We also treat the subject of the perception of the gender relations by writers of the republican period. In the second part, we explain how Sabahattin Ali draws attention, through his perception of gender relations, to the inequalities and injustices that affect women and men of the Kemalist period, then we show how his observations contribute to make him a unique and courageous defender of their rights and a modern thinker always concerned with improving the lives of his contemporaries. Through a precise examination of works of fiction and other non-fictional texts, we see how he systematically denounced the shortcomings and failings of the new political regime but also why literature was for him the place of a struggle for truth and freedom, values to which he devoted himself until his death. Our work tries to pay tribute to a writer and an intellectual who always wanted to persuade his readers that social roles were never fixed but were the result of a culture and a society that it was up to all to forge

Texto completo da fonteThe subject of this thesis is the study of the relationship between men and women in the work of Ingeborg Bachmann. The relation between both sexes is seen as a leitmotiv and as a metaphor of the multiple polarities and opposing themes in her work. The analysis considers the psychological and philosophical implications this question involves. In addition, this thesis tries to show the insufficiency of feminist interpretations. Men are first of all products and negative projections of the feminine imagination. The role of men is to serve as mediators between the ego and reality. In chapter are the interpretation focuses on the first part of Bachmann's work (poems, radio plays, prose until 1961) and explores the tension between men and woman in the context of the tension between the individual and the world. Chapter two deals with the transformation of this tension into an ethical conflict in “Todesarten”, “Gier” and “Simultan”

Texto completo da fonteDuring the 18th Century, following Spinoza, Bayle and Locke’s writing, the question of a religious tolerance is in the centre of the debates. Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau and Diderot, according to their visions of the problem, developed a theory around a notion which would give birth later to the freedom of conscience principle. Fictions, and especially the novels, allowed these authors to increase the spreading of a tolerance notion. Even if anti-Fanaticism has been an object of consensus between enlightenment Philosophers, it is necessary to admit that their conception of tolerance implied many differences of opinion. In his "Dictionnaire Philosophique", Voltaire appeared as the most dauntless champion; but what about the "Traité sur la tolerance"? Was Diderot’s indifference to all religion favorable to the proclamation of a tolerance? In their confrontations, especially against Voltaire and Rousseau, Enlightenment writers did not all the time observe the same demand. It is important to define, according to our corpus, these takings of position.Nevertheless, it should not be appropriate to cast on pervious periods modern ideals. This would lead to the danger of anachronism. Enlightenment writer were indeed, confronted to historical situations as well as cultural and ideological backgrounds completely different from ours

Texto completo da fonteMembers of the middle class, particularly clergymen, doctors, and lawyers occupy a central place in Victorian literature, both as narrators and characters. However, it seems that this prominent place fosters questioning as much as empowerment. This paradoxical position seems to stem from the recurrent appearance of members of the professions in texts within which the principles of truth and meaning are undermined. Therefore, we will show how members of the professions, both as narrators and characters, put forward discursive strategies which allow them to manipulate the notion of truth and to destabilize meaning. In order to do so, we will study predominantly short stories, as this genre was favoured by Victorian writers as the locus of narrative and literary experimentation. Besides, this genre was widely read by Victorian audiences and can be seen as a privileged media for authors to express their doubts and commentaries on contemporary society. We have chosen to study the works of three authors in particular, who played a vital role in the bringing of the middle classes on the forefront of Victorian literary representation. Indeed, we will focus on Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, the son of a clergyman and a man fascinated by the arcana of theology, Arthur Conan Doyle, a doctor himself, before he became a writer and William Wilkie Collins, who had a passion for science and the transformations its growing influence imposed on Victorian society. What is more, these three writers' active role in the establishment of the most popular Victorian periodicals attests to their vast contribution to the development of Victorian values

Texto completo da fonteThis work entitled “The sexed world view in Agustina Bessa-Luís : the example of Os Super-Homens, A Sibila, Vale Abraão and Um cão que sonha” attempt to demonstrate the existence of a sexed view in these novels of the Portuguese woman writer, that is to say a point of view which is marked by “sexuation”. This world view is the feminine domination. It presents under a form of a thematic structure and it stands on a social and referential system: the power of women and their superior nature. She reproduces in part the sexed and contextual categorization and the sexed relations and she deconstruct them as well from the maximum of consciousness mobilized by the novelist at some specific moment of her career. Therefore, she is an anti-establishment and reflexive stands which evolutes as a result of the condensation of the deconstruction work led by the novelist. This world view translates a desire of totality and intends to participate at the social construction of the reality, by shaking up the social representations of readers form a process of awareness

Texto completo da fonteThis study proposes a reading of Alentejo’s imaginary, the largest province of Portugal, from a vagabond's point of view who actually drifted this region, in a form of vagrancy, which helped to forge the image of a man with a wild and untameable nature. The vast lands of Alentejo with wide horizons and distances have an immeasurable impact on Alentejo’s imaginary and its representation in literature. Part of Manuel da Fonseca’s literary work is closely attached to this region producing a rich universe of meanings on sensitive relationships of man and space. Thus, the inseparable relationship between the man from Alentejo and his region is represented all over his work and bonds to Manuel da Fonseca's own relationship to that region. A representation of life, through a familiar and intimate story, together with a political humanised commitment towards that province, creates a singular literary universe. A drift, initially attached to the wanderer’s figure - the maltês - and its form of vagrancy – maltesia, comes to draw itself in the literary space showing that the boundaries between the different texts and characters can be fluid and permeable. The sense of maltesia and maltês gently deepens, showing a human space which becomes inscribed with the riddle of life and literary creation

Texto completo da fonteAt the beginning of the 20th century, German narrative literature is marked by the influence of natural science (particularly in medicine, physics, astronomy and psychoanalysis) on the one hand and by gender issues on the other, i. E. The relationship between sexes and the type of knowledge each one possesses. Therefore, the character of the scientist is a symbol of both: the dialogue between science and literature and the crisis that masculine identity goes through during this period. The corpus of narrative texts the dissertation analyzes consists of two novels by Ernst Weiß (1882-1940): The Galley (1915) and Georg Letham, Doctor and Murderer (1931), of one short story by Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931): Dream Story (1925), and of two novels by Hermann Broch (1886-1951): The Unknown Quantity (1933) and The Spell (1936). The dissertation’s main issues are firstly the literary representation of sexual identities and the way they relate to the question of knowledge, secondly the authors’ representation of scientific knowledge and finally, the part played by these narrative texts in the development of what we come to understand as literary knowledge

Texto completo da fonteOur work hunts for bringing together two literary thoughts of two writers who marked the return of literature to narratives, Man and the world around the 1970’s and 1980’s. The study we are leading rests on a precise problem which is the nowadays identities of workers, their construction/deconstruction but above all questioning their status in a world of massive changes. Indeed, Leslie Kaplan and François Bon whom we are studying tend to question in their respective narrative the identity of workers in terms of a permanent process of reconstitution and transformation linked to new forms of work which has become atypical. Also, through the construction of novelistic characters with uncertain and fragile identities they look for revealing the state of precariousness of the social conditions of workers in the real society. Thus, as the story unfolds, the characters-workers are confronted with a real that they cannot grasp ; a real where the workspace is dislocated and worktime is fragmented. Leslie Kaplan and François Bon leave scope to such real in their texts through discontinued and hybrid structure which is nothing but an answer to the “fracture that runs the surface of the world”. Leslie Kaplan and François Bon writing is political at its very core through making the discursive gesture (free speech) as well as physical gesture (social struggle) a medium through which the characters try to confirm a threatened identity and to regain a lost working culture

In the first part, human denominations are analyzed and classified as part of the main social structures represented in the text : gender, nobility, domestic hierarchy, marriage, affinity, kinship, pseudo-kinship, friendship, love. Each word monograph is completed by a selection of variants and a lexicographical synthesis including references to Early Modern dictionaries and contemporary ones. The second part addresses the issue of social roles and practices analyzing how men and women are categorized through the narratives, in order to describe female, male, and male/female relationships and behaviors. Our point is that a widened concept of alliance can account for most of the social patterns designed through the text

Texto completo da fonteThe main characters in boys' adventure stories between the 1830s and the 1860s are young heroes on a quest to find adventure and remote horizons. Their itinerary through British colonial spaces is an initiatory progress towards a masculine ideal. This imagined fashioning of male identity is located at a crossroads between several traditions and idealized images of what "being a man" meant in the first decades of Queen Victoria's reign: between Christian manliness and muscular Christianity, figures of the gentleman, the knight and the hero, it is the palimpsestic production of an idealised masculinity which is being played out in those narratives. Which images, stereotypes and norms are brought into play? How do they circulate and how are they circulated? How is the progress towards a dominant model of masculinity narrated and illustrated by a grammar? The literary text gives birth to a specific staging of gender, between the imitation and the incorporation of norms, norm which can be otherwise circumvented, or even turned upside down through hybridization processes that these British boys are subjected to in the contact with geographical, cultural and gendered otherness. The reader is rapidly confronted to the fluctuation of novels which are much less rigid than one could anticipate. These novels turn out to be the production site of several masculinities which are experiencing phenomena of friction and interpenetration

Texto completo da fonteThis Master’s Dissertation in research-creation splits in two parts: a collection of short fictions and a theoretical essay. Le bleu des garçons regroups twelve fictional stories questioning masculine desire. The texts’ versified form explores the limit between prose and poetry, while the use of various narrative strategies, along with a minimalist style, highlights every situation’s underlying sense and blurs the line between reality and imagination. They might be sons, uncles, lovers, queer men, traitors and travellers, the protagonists of these short fictions still come together as they challenge their identity, their sexuality and their relationship with others in a critical moment condensed in time and space. Ensuing from the creative part’s narratological issues, “Why refuse oneself, tonight, to this supposition?” Imagination and narrative contamination in Marguerite Duras’s Dix heures et demie du soir en été studies this novel’s narrative adherence to the protagonist’s imagination. Our essay analyses how the narration’s gaze and internal focalization are contaminated by the main character’s growing emotion and apprehensions initiated by desire, while assisting the book’s cognitive objective: making passion its central event.

Texto completo da fonteTheatre practice in the Horn of Africa countries, which dates as far back as the Second World War, knows two phases. Before the independence of Djibouti and Somalia, theater focused mainly on political struggle, and, since the end of colonisation, it has been devoted to societal questions. After independence, massive urbanization brought pastoral populations into the city thus in contact with other populations of different cultures such as the Afars, the Arabs, the Indians and the Jews. The settlement in towns is mainly synonymous with the encounter with the West symbolised by school and nightclubs. The new city dwellers fall into two groups, Traditionalists and Moderns who reject tradition. The aim of the authors who advocate for the safeguard of tradition consists in confronting the values of the two groups and show how abandoning traditional merits condemns the society to identity loss. Subsequent to the analysis of these contrasting values and evaluating the underlying motivations, the aim of our study is to question the authors' objective. Could they be considered “reactionary” or have they opened a new door to a debate that is called to continue?

Texto completo da fonteThe Zolian novel is eminently talkative. It is not easy to point out where the voice comes from ; who gives and takes the right to speak, be it the narrator or his doubles – men of the Church or of the State, men of business, letters or science. What is obvious however, is that this voice which permeates the officially objective narrative of the realistic novel is infallibly a masculine one. Informed, authorized, even authoritarian, the masculine discourse takes on the feminine one by either silencing it, or allowing it to approve of, sometimes to reiterate obediently, the elementary “truths” about itself. This is not only about chasing the stigmatizing tendencies of a discourse typical of certain characters, but also about grasping the effects of this discourse on the female readers ; the dumb, fancied listeners to the tyrannical pedagogy of a writer who was both influenced by the stereotypes of his time and stirred by an original reformist spirit

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis, which deals with the representation of women in Alain Robbe-Grillet’s work, aims at studying the essential place occupied by women in in his different novels. Naturally, women play an essential part in the life of men. They represent the essence of life. For centuries, she is artistic source of inspiration and place of controversy. That is why the role played by women in Alain Robbe-Grillet’s work seems to us particularly important. [...]

Texto completo da fonteIn his quest for the ideal wife, Panurge, the hero of the Tiers Livre, embodies a century of debates about marriage. Between the 1540’ and the 1630’, throughout the "querelle des femmes", lawyers, doctors or writers pick up a pen to praise or denounce marriage. It is the woman, shrewish-natured, who is accused of endangering the conjugal union. Broadly speaking, the shrew's topos calls into questions the masculine authority and the role of the wife at home. At the same time, the supposed resurgence of domestic crimes leads to a denunciation of conjugal violence. Marriage is a shared concern: that’s why, the evil wife becomes the key theme of productions as varied as satirical poems, “canards sanglants”, or law books. The comparative reading of these sources is helpful for understanding the role of misogamous stream in the reform of matrimonial thought and the evolution of wife’s status in early modern time

Texto completo da fonteContext: Exercise programmes can prevent falls in older community-dwellers. However, evidence that these programmes can also prevent injurious falls was poor. Objectives : Systematic review of evidence of the effect of exercise interventions on injurious fall prevention from randomised controlled trials (RCT).Evaluate the effectiveness of ‘Ossébo’, a multi-centre RCT assessing the effectiveness of a 2-year injurious fall prevention balance training programme. Methods:Systematic reviewThe definitions of injurious falls from included studies were classified into more homogeneous categories. This allowed the estimation of a pooled rate ratio for each injurious falls category based on random effects models. Ossébo trial706 women aged 75-85 years ; home-living with diminished functional capacities were included. The 2 groups were compared for rates of injurious falls with a frailty model. Other outcomes included physical functional capacities, and quality of life indicators. Results:Systematic review17 trials involving 4305 participants were included. Four categories were identified: all injurious falls, falls resulting in medical care, severe injurious falls, and falls resulting in fractures. Exercise had a significant preventive effect in all categories.OsséboThere were 305 injurious falls in the intervention group and 397 in the control group, for a HR of 0.81 (0.67 to 0.99). At 2 years, women in the intervention group had significantly better performances on all physical tests and a better perception of their overall physical function. Conclusion:Fall prevention exercise programmes are effective in preventing injurious falls, and are feasible for long-term, wide-spread dissemination

Texto completo da fonteIn this creative Master’s Thesis in French Literature, I addess the issue of the relationship between processes of rewriting (eg, intertextuality, intratextuality and autotextuality, but also the figures of repetition and correction) and defamiliarization (or the distancing effect) by the means of an essay on the novel Mercier et Camier by Samuel Beckett and of a literary creation of my own, consisting of thirty-one unbounded and unpaginated sheets, on which I rewrote as many times the incipit of Bouvard et Pecuchet by Gustave Flaubert in a layout that defies linear reading. Both my essay and my creation intend to show that processes of rewriting can be used to defamiliarize the representative function of literature.
