This cross-sectional, descriptive study explored perspectives of discharge planners regarding transitions of hospitalized patients who are severely obese seeking discharge to a nursing home. Attention has been focused on care transitions regarding high hospital readmission rates, yet specific needs of patients who are severely obese have been largely overlooked. Ninety-seven (response rate 39.8%) discharge planners returned surveys addressing frequency of, and issues encountered when, arranging placements. Community and hospital characteristics were also collected. One third of the respondents from Pennsylvania and Arkansas reported inability to transfer patients; barriers included reimbursement, staffing, and equipment. Respondents perceiving nursing homes to have equipment concerns were nearly 7 times more likely to report patient size as a barrier ( p = .001). Given increasing obesity rates, health care delivery systems must be prepared to provide necessary resources and all levels of care, including transitions for hospitalized patients who are severely obese needing nursing home care post-discharge.

Abstract In this essay I argue for opening up South Asian historiography on the home to explore not just ideals of middle-class domesticity, but also the material goods and spaces of home lives. This helps to rethink class, as ideals of middle-class respectability were often worked out in buildings and through goods shared with lower classes, deploying caste hierarchies to articulate definitions of proper home life. At the same time, taking materials and spaces seriously allows attention to the role of men in shaping and experiencing homes, whether as designers, retailers, planners, or residents themselves. Drawing on the specific example of the iconic firm Kamdar Ltd., which created modern home interiors in mid-century Bombay, I argue that thinking through the materials of home allows attention to the global engagements of home life defined in class and caste terms, by men and women alike.

Holiday homes have been part of the tourism industry over a period of years, but there is little documented research regarding holiday home ownership, its value and impact in Namibia, therefore, the study is significant to this topic. The main aim behind this research study is to profile holiday homeowners and identify their motivation for purchasing these homes in Namibia. The results of the study focus on exploratory factor analysis which outlines four motivational factors and the correlation results to determine the demographic and psychological characteristics motivating the ownership of holiday homes. The study concluded that most holiday homes are owned by high income earners, who purchased these homes in coastal towns for the purpose of investment, income generation and recreation. The study thus recommends that these results be made available to policy planners and researchers in the local authorities and other stakeholders, in order to assist with the articulation of policies and the creation of a framework to monitor the sustainable growth of holiday home ownership that benefits the community.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to share the findings from a learning intervention aimed at facilitating more regular and effective collaboration across the planning and aging sectors in order to advance Livable Communities for All Ages (LCA). Design/methodology/approach A half-day summit that convened over 250 aging sector professionals and planners. Data from these conversations, as well as a pre-event survey, post-event evaluations, and a six-month post-event follow-up survey provide the findings for the discussion. Findings The results revealed that the participants increasingly recognized the value of cross-sector relationships to their work on LCA. Further, the success on current projects was highly attributed to the trust gained from a previous experience of aging and planning professionals working together. Research limitations/implications Researchers relied on a purposive sample of respondents already registered to attend the Livable Communities Summit, who were likely to be somewhat knowledgeable about the topic of age-friendly planning. While not generalizable to the broader professional fields of the aging and planning sectors, the results inform on the importance of cross-sector collaboration in the context of planning communities supportive of individuals across the lifespan. Practical implications Existing challenges to the local residents in a broad swath of areas including housing, transportation, social isolation, purpose and more, are exacerbated in a rapidly aging world that does not advance policies, practices, and built environments to make communities more livable for residents of all ages. Originality/value The intention of this research is to contribute to the limited existing literature on collaboration between professionals in the planning and aging fields and to stimulate the increased and improved cross-sector relationships.

In the 1930s, upper-class residents of Bombay were bombarded with ideas and products intended to make their homes modern. Showrooms, exhibitions, advertisements, and design books all addressed a consuming public newly interested in “the art and comfort of the home.” As Abigail McGowan demonstrates in Domestic Modern: Redecorating Homes in Bombay in the 1930s, attempts to remake Indian homes were hardly new; from the late nineteenth century on, sanitary reformers, girls’ educators, and urban planners introduced new principles of home management and hygiene into domestic space. In 1930s Bombay, attention shifted from household practices to style—a distinctively modern look expressed through new architectural spaces and the latest consumer goods. Recent scholarship has explored new building styles and practices in interwar India; McGowan argues that new kinds of furnishings and decor were equally important in defining what “the modern” meant in the city in this period.

ABSTRACT Over the past several decades, the rapid growth of Southwestern United States desert cities is creating significant climate and water scarcity challenges. City planners are using green infrastructure to mitigate these challenges and develop more livable, sustainable, and resilient communities. This study uses hedonic pricing modeling (HPM) to evaluate how constructed wastewater wetlands impact home values integrated into the project design. It compares Crystal Gardens in Avondale, AZ, consisting of 14 engineered wastewater filtering ponds, to nearby neighborhoods with desert landscaping. HPM revealed higher values for Crystal Gardens homes overall (7%) and significant increases for homes on the ponds (14%). Results demonstrate the economic value of integrating water-related infrastructure in desert cities for home sales. For a more accurate benefit assessment, additional research is needed on how the ecosystem services provided by these constructed wetlands contribute to greater property values.

The issue of planning for evacuations of nursing homes and related health care facilities concerns both emergency planners and disaster researchers who cite the lack of empirical data on the problems of special populations during emergency evacuations. Although most evacuations of such facilities are carried out successfully, the effectiveness of an evacuation (as measured by time to evacuate) is limited by certain constraints. This study examines selected organizational characteristics of nursing homes and related health care facilities which experienced either a partial or complete evacuation of their facilities. Among the factors affecting facility evacuations are resources, the type and number of clientele, and community characteristics such as population density. Although the issues are related to general evacuation concerns, the findings suggest that individuals within specialized populations are unlike other victims of disaster with particular needs that require different management strategies to expedite an evacuation efficiently.

Purpose Speed bumps invite varied responses from homeowners, drivers and policymakers. Parents of small children like speed bumps, if they slow the passing traffic, but prospective home buyers may reject a home with a speed bump nearby, contemplating the traversal of it thousand times during an ownership period. The purpose of this study is to empirically identify the effect of speed bumps on home values. Design/methodology/approach Analysis presented here is based on an examination of home sales prices and exploits variation in the number of speed bumps traversed and the installation of speed bumps to identify the effect of speed bumps on home values. An anonymous online survey is also used to shed light on drivers of the empirical results. Findings Initial results exploiting variation in the number of bumps traversed suggest speed bumps are associated with reduced residential property values. An estimated treatment effect of speed bump installation underscores the original findings. Finally, survey results imply that older homeowners and homeowners with children may favor speed bumps but less than the disfavor of those who do not. Research limitations/implications The research presented here applies to speed bumps in residential areas and on streets not considered through streets. Practical implications The findings suggest that planners should investigate options such as medians and roundabouts instead of speed bumps. Social implications These results suggest that communities can be visually improved and home values lifted through the removal of speed bumps and installation of other traffic control devices. Originality/value This research is valuable to residential developers, planners and neighborhood associations across the country.

It is commonly accepted that purchasing a home is one of the most important decisions that people can make in their lifetimes, and that perception types of home-buying decisions are critical constructs in housing market research. However, despite the large body of extant literature that has examined objective factors determining housing demand, few have analyzed home-purchase intention from a subjective perspective using a cross-sectional approach. To fill this research gap, this paper aims to distinguish and compare different perception types of home buying in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the USA by using Q methodology, which utilizes subjective views and perceptions to capture general responses to a phenomenon. After analyzing the 30 samples of home buyers selected from each of these three areas being surveyed, the research results demonstrate that most home buyers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the USA are aggressive investors, pragmatists and lifelong financial planners, respectively.

A large and growing segment of the United States population resides in nursing homes. Many nursing home residents have multiple comorbidities, are unable to perform activities of daily living, and need assistance for their daily functioning. They are some of the most fragile and vulnerable members of the population. Disasters are increasing in frequency and severity. This makes it likely that disasters will strike nursing homes and affect their residents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of disasters in the United States that resulted in nursing home evacuations. There were 51 reported nursing home evacuations due to a disaster over 22.5 years between 1995 and 2017. Natural disasters were responsible for the majority of evacuations (58.8 percent) followed by man-made unintentional disasters (37.3 percent) and man-made intentional (arson) (3.9 percent). The single most common reason for evacuation was hurricanes (23.5 percent, N = 12) and internal fires (23.5 percent, N = 12). Water-related disasters accounted for nearly three-fourths of the natural disasters (hurricanes 40 percent, N = 12; floods, 33.3 percent, N = 10; total 73.3 percent, N = 22), then snow/ice storms (13.3 percent, N = 4). Of man-made disasters, over two-thirds (66.7 percent) were due to internal fires (internal fires, n = 12, 57.1 percent and arson n = 2, 9.5 percent; total N = 14, 66.7 percent). The highest number of evacuations occurred in Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, and Pennsylvania. This knowledge should enable nursing home administrators, disaster planners, public health officials, and others to improve preparedness for disasters that lead to nursing home evacuations.

Purpose This study aims to examine the impact of housing construction on single-family housing values and the implications for urban development. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this objective, the author used the difference-in-difference methodology to examine the effect of multifamily and single-family housing construction on surrounding single-family homes in Stockholm, Sweden. The author analysed data from approximately 480 housing construction projects between 2009 and 2014 and 17,000 single-family detached house transactions between 2005 and 2018. Findings The research found that multifamily construction projects did not affect the value of surrounding single-family homes, while single-family home construction had a negative impact. The author attributes this result to single-family housing projects typically located in areas with initially positive externalities, while multifamily housing projects are often located on the edge of areas with negative externalities before construction. Research limitations/implications The research is limited by its focus on a specific geographic area and time frame, and future research could expand the scope to include other cities and regions and different periods. Additionally, further research could examine the impact of housing construction on other economic factors beyond housing values. Practical implications The research has practical implications for urban planners and policymakers. They should consider the potential negative impact of new single-family home construction on existing single-family housing areas while balancing the need for new housing in urban areas. By carefully evaluating construction locations, policymakers can create more sustainable, livable and equitable urban environments that benefit all members of society. Originality/value This research paper contributes to the field of housing economics by examining the impact of housing construction on single-family housing values in the context of urban development and climate change mitigation. Using a difference-in-difference methodology, the study provides evidence of the price effect of multifamily and single-family housing construction on surrounding single-family homes, which has important policy implications for urban planners and policymakers. By identifying the negative impact of single-family home construction on surrounding areas and highlighting the need for careful evaluation of construction locations, the research provides valuable insights for creating sustainable, livable and equitable urban environments that benefit all members of society.

Home-care manipulation robot requires exploring and performing the navigation task safely to reach the grasping target and ensure human safety in the home environment. An indoor home environment has complex obstacles such as chairs, tables, and sports equipment, which make it difficult for robots that rely on 2D laser rangefinders to detect. On the other hand, the conventional approaches overcome the problem by using 3D LiDAR, RGB-D camera, or fusing sensor data. The convolutional neural network has shown promising results in dealing with unseen obstacles in navigation by predicting the unseen obstacle from 2D grid maps to perform collision avoidance using 2D laser rangefinders only. Thus, this paper investigated the predicted grid map from the obstacle prediction network result for improving indoor navigation performance using only 2D LiDAR measurement. This work was evaluated by combining the configuration of the various local planners, type of static obstacles, raw map, and predicted map. Our investigation demonstrated that using the predicted grid map enabled all the local planners to achieve a better collision-free path by using the 2D laser rangefinders only rather than the RGB-D camera with 2D laser rangefinders with a raw map. This advanced investigation considers that the predicted map is potentially helpful for future work in the learning-based local navigation system.

Abstract The most reported allegation of abuse to Adult Protective Service (APS) agencies nationwide is self-neglect (SN). Researchers collaborated with Oklahoma APS to understand characteristics of community-dwelling clients reported to APS for alleged SN, and examine predictors associated with whether cases were validated by APS case managers. Baseline phone interviews were conducted with 188 clients reported to APS for self-neglect during the COVID-19 pandemic. A logistic regression was run to examine the effects of age, gender, income, race, education, cognitive status, ADL impairment, depression, recent nursing home placements, hospitalizations and falls on the likelihood that participants’ allegation of SN was validated. The model was statistically significant, χ2(12) = 26.67, p = .009. It explained 24.1% of the variance in case validation and correctly classified 81.8% of cases. Having a history of being in a short-term nursing home and having a history of falls was significantly associated with the increased likelihood of having a validated SN allegation. However, a history of hospitalization was significantly associated with a reduction in the likelihood of having a validated SN allegation. These preliminary findings suggest that perhaps hospital discharge planners may be assisting SN patients to access home-and-community based services (HCBS) early on to address their SN so it is not validated by APS compared to nursing home discharge planners. Implications for practice include educating APS staff on predictors of SN and collaborating with community-based partners like short-term rehabilitation facilities to address SN issues to reduce the likelihood of having a case validated by APS.

The development of the self and custom housebuilding sector can work towards increasing the supply of housing and alleviate some of the strain on the housing market in England. Although it is not a solution for everyone, improving self and custom housebuilding can add diversity to the market, increase housing affordability, and produce sustainable homes. This has been recognised by the UK Government, which has introduced legislation which aims to assist self and custom builders on the journey to building their own home. The goals of the legislation are to ensure every local authority in England keeps a register of individuals who want to build their own home, to consider this register when carrying out other planning functions, and to grant sufficient planning permissions for those on the register. This paper evaluates the ‘self-build and custom housebuilding registers’ from the perspective of transaction costs and perceived effectiveness. This is achieved through semi-structured interviews with local authority planners, private-sector planners, property developers, and national bodies. The findings of this study identify that the primary transaction costs occur in the eligibility tests stage of the register application and relate to the uncertainty felt by applicants post application. The paper concludes that these could be rectified by implementing a more consistent and fair system. The perceived effectiveness of the register varies considerably. The paper determines that the policy requires significant change in order to meet the goals it set out to achieve, which includes model Supplementary Planning Guidance documents and a robust support system for applicants.

Rural residents experience higher disability, mortality, and poverty rates than their urban counterparts; they also have more barriers to accessing care, including nursing home care. Meanwhile, the proportion of nonelderly adult nursing home residents (<65 years old) is growing, yet little is known about this population and barriers they face trying to access care, especially in rural areas. This qualitative study uses data from 23 semistructured interviews with rural hospital discharge planners in five states to identify specific barriers to finding nursing home care for nonelderly rural residents. We grouped those barriers into three primary themes—payment status, fit, and medical complexity—as well as two minor themes—caregivers and bureaucratic processes—and discuss each in the article, along with potential policy and programmatic interventions to improve access to nursing home care for nonelderly rural residents.

Home stay tourism has emerged as a promising avenue for income generation and community development in Nepal, particularly in rural areas where traditional forms of accommodation are scarce. This article explores the income generation opportunities offered by home stays in Ilam Municipality, Nepal, and delves into the impact of rural tourism on the local economy. The article also analyzes the challenges and opportunities associated with home stay development, emphasizing the importance of community-based tourism and its potential for economic growth, cultural preservation, and poverty alleviation. Drawing on qualitative approach, data were collected through the unstructured interview and direct interaction with local participants and visitors. The findings highlight the economic benefits of home stays, the empowerment of local communities, and the preservation of cultural heritage. However, challenges related to cultural authenticity, service quality, and equitable development are identified. The findings imply that the policymakers, tourism planners, and local communities should formulate effective plans and programs to enhance the sustainability and inclusivity of home stay tourism in Nepal.

For the 1990 census data to be useful for transportation planners, it must reflect information collected in transportation surveys, such as home interviews and on board transit surveys. These surveys select a survey day that captures a snapshot of transportation activity for that day. Inherent in the 1990 census are problems related to biases created by the way in which the journey-to-work questions are asked. Issues related to questions that ask for “typical” or “usual” activity in the previous workweek tend to overestimate certain trip making, while underestimating others. For example, on a usual workday, an individual would drive an automobile to work. But on any given day, he or she may be forced to take public transportation because the automobile was in for repairs. The analysis looks at the 1990 census and the 1990 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey and develops factors by urban area size. Factors developed include absenteeism (related to sick time, vacation, personal business, part-time employment, and business-related travel), mode of travel (shifts between highway and transit modes), multiple jobs (for individuals who hold multiple jobs or make multiple trips to the same place of work from home), and trip chaining (distinguish between direct home-to-work trips, as defined in travel model home-based work, and trips that make intermediate stops).

Abstract This paper focuses on the notion of home as a narrative of one’s lived experience that clashes with planners’ understanding of housing and housing policies, using as a case study Shahriar County, located on the western fringe of the metropolitan area of Tehran. Following Heidegger, the feeling of home is a fundamental aspect of human existence. From this perspective, housing policies and spatial planning impact the sense of home in a geographical context. The empirical analysis is based on an overview of institutional changes since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and interviews with inhabitants of Shahriar. The results indicate that Iran has developed a particular form of neoliberal, speculative model of urban development, in which urban segregation and seclusion and uneven regional development are noteworthy. Consequently, the sense of home is structurally undermined on the metropolitan fringe, generating a feeling of living on the edge of the world.

Electric vehicles (Evs) offer promising benefits in reducing emissions and enhancing energy security; however, accurately estimating their load presents a challenge in optimizing grid management and sustainable integration. Moreover, EV load estimation is context-specific, and generalized methods are inadequate. To address this, our study introduces a tailored three-step solution, focusing on the Middle East, specifically Saudi Arabia. Firstly, real survey data are employed to estimate driving patterns and commuting behaviors such as daily mileage, arrival/departure time at home and workplace, and trip mileage. Subsequently, per-unit profiles for homes and workplaces are formulated using these data and commercially available EV data, as these locations are preferred for charging by most EV owners. Finally, the developed profiles facilitate EV load estimations under various scenarios with differing charger ratios (L1 and L2) and building types (residential, commercial, mixed). Simulation outcomes reveal that while purely residential or commercial buildings lead to higher peak loads, mixed buildings prove advantageous in reducing the peak load of Evs. Especially, the ratio of commercial to residential usage of around 50% generates the lowest peak load, indicating an optimal balance. Such analysis aids grid operators and policymakers in load estimation and incentivizing EV-related infrastructure. This study, encompassing data from five Saudi Arabian cities, provides valuable insights into EV usage, but it is essential to interpret findings within the context of these specific cities and be cautious of potential limitations and biases.

In this article, we explore governance structures of the recreational landscape of Kvarken Archipelago in Western Finland, an area where shore displacement occurs due to land rise and emergent (pristine) land is continuously created. Traditionally a production landscape, of fishing and small-scale agriculture, the recreational value of the archipelago has been acknowledged. The area is a popular second home destination and was designated UNESCO World Heritage in 2006. There are roughly 10,000 second homes within the study area, of which 14% are leaseholds located on emergent land. The emergent land thus makes up a common-pool resource system where private and collective use rights overlap. This article aims to understand the implications for recreational use (second home ownership) through interviews with different local stakeholders such as municipality planners, representatives of commons, local communities, and with environmental and land survey authorities. Especially, it sets out to ask, what kinds of value are created within the recreational resource system, what power relationships within the commons steer the management of the recreational resource system, and what are the implications for recreational use of the landscape. The results show different logics of recreational resource management locally in the studied commons. Access to second homes located within the collectively owned emergent land is limited to part-owners of the commons and tend to be less commercialized and also less modernized than privately owned second home plots.

Background: Every year, world wide, 200 million women become pregnant. The development of urban areas allowed women to receive more care and treatment. However, in rural areas such measures are not available to every woman. Data on delivery practice of rural woman may help the social and public health planners and decision makers to minimize and prevent maternal mortality and morbidity ensuring safe motherhood. Objective: The aim of the study was to observe the delivery practice of rural women of Bangladesh. Materials and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted and data were collected from Dhamrai upazila, Dhaka, Bangladesh in April 2008. Total 159 women of reproductive age group at least having one child were selected purposively to elicit information on various demographic, socioeconomic, cultural and selected programmatic variables including maternal health care and delivery practices. Results: Among the respondents about 55% were literate. Majority (80%) of the respondents delivered at home and most of the them (71%) felt that home delivery was comfortable where as about 29% of the respondents were compelled to deliver at home due to family decision and financial constraint. Among the deliveries about 82% occurred normally and 18.2% were by cesarean section. A considerable percentage of deliveries (49%) were attended by traditional birth attendants. Blade was used for cutting umbilical cord in majority of the cases (74%) who delivered at home. Most of the respondents (90%) took ante natal check up and about 74% were vaccinated by tetanus toxoid. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that a lot of work is still to do for the policy makers and health planners to target, plan, develop and deliver maternal health services to the rural women of Bangladesh. Some families need to place their disabled child in long term out of home care, due to a high care burden. Foster family care is increasingly the only option available. While published research is sparse, there is evidence that rostered staff models of care are more appropriate for some children, and the potential gains from family care are overstated. Questions are raised about foster care successes overseas and locally, particularly as care options are restricted to in home support or alternative family models. Rostered staff models can promote a child’s involvement with the birth family, and should be developed further. Planners need to foster diversity, which allows flexibility and promises new knowledge.

Background Aging in place (AIP) is a policy strategy designed to help older adults remain in their community. While planners internationally have modified aspects of the older adult care continuum (e.g., home care, assisted living, nursing homes) to facilitate AIP, further improvements to community-based supports and services are also required. This study compared and constrasted the community-based factors (e.g., supports, services and personal strategies or characteristics) that family/friend care partners and healthcare stakeholders (i.e., planners/providers) view as most important to help older adults successfully AIP. Methods An initial list of factors shown to influence AIP was created from the academic literature. These factors were used to develop a Delphi survey implemented separately on care partners and healthcare stakeholders. Respondents rated the importance of each factor using a 10-point Likert Scale (1 = not important; 10 = absolutely critical). Consensus in each group was defined when at least 80% of participants scored a factor ≥8 (“very important”), with an interquartile range ≤2. Respondents suggested additional factors during Delphi round one. Results Care partners (N = 25) and healthcare stakeholders (N = 36) completed two and three Delphi rounds, respectively. These groups independently agreed that the following 3 (out of 27) factors were very important to help older adults age in place: keeping one’s home safe, maintaining strong inter-personal relationships, and coordinating care across formal providers. While healthcare stakeholders did not reach consensus on other factors, care partners agreed that 7 additional factors (e.g., access to affordable housing, having mental health programs) were important for AIP. Conclusions Compared to healthcare stakeholders, care partners felt that more and diverse community-based factors are important to support older adults to successfully AIP. Future research should replicate these findings in other jurisdictions, examine the availability and accessibility of the priority factors, and develop sustainable solutions to enhance their effectiveness.

The increasing isolation of the elderly both in their own homes and in care homes has made the problem of caring for elderly people who live alone an urgent priority. This article presents a proposed design for a heterogeneous multirobot system consisting of (i) a small mobile robot to monitor the well-being of elderly people who live alone and suggest activities to keep them positive and active and (ii) a domestic mobile manipulating robot that helps to perform household tasks. The entire system is integrated in an automated home environment (AAL), which also includes a set of low-cost automation sensors, a medical monitoring bracelet and an Android application to propose emotional coaching activities to the person who lives alone. The heterogeneous system uses ROS, IoT technologies, such as Node-RED, and the Home Assistant Platform. Both platforms with the home automation system have been tested over a long period of time and integrated in a real test environment, with good results. The semantic segmentation of the navigation and planning environment in the mobile manipulator for navigation and movement in the manipulation area facilitated the tasks of the later planners. Results about the interactions of users with the applications are presented and the use of artificial intelligence to predict mood is discussed. The experiments support the conclusion that the assistance robot correctly proposes activities, such as calling a relative, exercising, etc., during the day, according to the user’s detected emotional state, making this is an innovative proposal aimed at empowering the elderly so that they can be autonomous in their homes and have a good quality of life.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine how satisfied homeowners are with their gated residences. Design/methodology/approach – This study starts out by examining the data collected through self-administered surveys to find out the satisfaction levels and motivations of homeowners toward their gated homes in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. This is then followed by regression analysis to examine the relationship between motivations of owing gated homes and residential satisfaction. Findings – The benefits that motivate households to purchase gated landed homes are “Safety and Security,” “Financial Benefits” and “Social Status” and “Lifestyle Facilities.” It also appears that the satisfaction levels of homeowners are to a certain extent, influenced by the benefits of owning a gated home. Research limitations/implications – It seems that when home buyers purchase houses these days, a major consideration is placed on whether or not the development is a gated one. Practical implications – The congruence and dissonance between residents and their housing situations are essential to prevent the decreasing quality of urban environment. Thus, this study can serve as a guide for urban planners and property developers in planning and designing of enclosed private residential developments. Furthermore, property developers can gain valuable insights on the gated home features that they should improve to meet each homebuyer’s needs. Originality/value – Majority of the studies on residential satisfaction have been focussed on the evaluation of non-enclosure communities. There have only been a limited of studies examining the experience of residents in enclosed private residential environments in a developing country. Hence, this paper has contributed to the existing knowledge in the development of gated estates in a developing country.

The Visiting Moms Program delivers a relationship-based home visiting intervention in which volunteers address challenges faced by at-risk new mothers and families. For new mothers experiencing isolation, anxiety about parenting, lack of support, or limited resources, this program offers a volunteer, who is a mother herself, in the role of a mentor mother to connect the new mother to resources, listen without judgment, and strengthen parenting abilities. Less stress for the mother and improved care for the infant are major program goals. Relational theories and studies on home visiting interventions are used as lenses for viewing this type of intervention. Vignettes are included to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms through which the new mothers change. Clinicians, program planners, and administrators are likely to find this article helpful in its coverage of the literature on volunteers and home-based services, its description of the relational intervention provided by one home visiting program using volunteers, and its recommendations for ways in which others can design such programs.

Despite the importance of healthy settings for health promotion, little is known about how neighborhood characteristics affect men’s health. The present study aims to explore the associations between perceptions of home and workplace neighborhoods with diverse health outcomes, and to examine mediating mechanisms. A sample of 669 men members of labor unions in Quebec, Canada, completed a questionnaire assessing social and physical aspects of their work and home neighborhoods (the Health-Promoting Neighborhood Questionnaire) as well as subjective and objective health outcomes (perceived health, positive mental health, body mass index) and potential mediators (health behaviors, self-efficacy). Structural equation modeling (path analysis) revealed that the Health-Promoting Neighborhood Questionnaire was associated with all three health outcomes, either directly or indirectly through health behaviors and self-efficacy. Both home and workplace neighborhoods were associated with men’s health, home neighborhood being more strongly associated. The findings suggest that physical and social aspects of neighborhood might contribute to men’s health. The study highlights positive environmental levers for urban planners, policy makers, and health professionals to promote men’s health.

Freight planners are becoming increasingly more concerned about the impact of failed home deliveries on additional carrier journeys (repeat deliveries) and customer trips (to retrieve goods from carrier depots). A local collection-and-delivery point (CDP) concept, which allows customers to collect their failed deliveries, has emerged as a solution for home delivery failures. Data from a 2007 customer survey across two areas along with historical delivery data provided by a major carrier company in the United Kingdom were used in a study of the problem. Nine carrier companies were interviewed to gain an understanding of current operating characteristics of carriers and the key problems encountered during delivery operations. The study quantified the transport costs for the carrier and customer trips of the conventional home delivery method, in which the carrier makes repeat deliveries in the case of first-time failure and appraises the benefits of using CDP networks for handling those failures. The results suggest that a network of CDPs would function most effectively when (a) the proportion of first-time home delivery failures is significant, (b) a significant number of people walk to their local CDP, (c) the carrier's depot is located far from the collection area and is not in a convenient location that allows the trip to be combined with another trip; and (d) there is a dense network of CDPs around the residential area.

This article examines how developers attempt to move into new settings, and how such attempts sometimes fail. Unlike long-standing developers, who are in various ways ‘embedded’ ( Henneberry and Parris, 2013 ), newcomers have to overcome their lack of familiarity with the context of their intended project. Using the case of a proposed megaproject at Modderfontein in Johannesburg, we examine how a Chinese developer worked to articulate with the Johannesburg planning environment. It produced an extensive network by deploying its staff to Johannesburg, hiring local professional staff, winning the favour of provincial politicians and hiring consultants in the UK in order to help close a deal with planners responsible for approval. Sophisticated efforts to pitch the project to municipal planners using win-win narratives failed to satisfy the planners’ material concerns that the project would break up urban space, would be financially exclusionary and could undermine economies elsewhere in the city. The developer ultimately withdrew as a result of delays in approval combined with a financial crisis it faced in its home context. The article considers the interplay between the transnational networks that emerge around megaprojects; the communicative space of project negotiations that is characterised by different cultures of planning; and the political economic context that allows – or interrupts – transnational development.

Home Science education is an interdisciplinary field of study which applies science and arts towards achieving better, healthier and happy homes. This study sought to establish the extent to which socio-cultural practices affect learners’ enrolment rates in home science education using a case of public secondary schools in Pokot Central Sub-County. Specifically, the study assessed the extent to which gender roles affect learners’ enrolment rates in Home Science education in public secondary schools of Pokot Central Sub-County. The researcher utilized socio-cultural theories which suggest that social norms and interactions of people living in a given area affect those peoples’ individual behavior and choices. The study adopted descriptive survey design which was used to answer the research questions. The target population for this study comprised of 5079 respondents consisting of 24 public secondary schools, 1 Sub-County Director of Education, 72 local leaders and 4,982 secondary school learners. Stratified, simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used in the selection of the respondents. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data from teachers and learners, focused group discussions for local administrators and document analysis for enrolment rates in 24 secondary schools. The researcher used interview schedule for Pokot Central Sub- Director of Education. The collected data was analysed using SPSS computer program version 22 and presented as frequency. The study revealed that gender roles are a major contributor to low enrolment rates in home science in public secondary schools in Pokot Central. The researcher recommended that concerted efforts by local leaders, Ministry of Education, parents and other stakeholders of education should make efforts to stamp out retrogressive socio-cultural practices to boost enrolments in not only home science but also other subjects in schools. The results of this study should be beneficial to education policy formulators, managers and planners in coming up with policies and management strategies that can boost enrolment rates in Home Science.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic heightened attention to contingency planning in every area of life including family caregiving. Extended time in the caregiver role can increase problem-solving abilities; yet low rates of traditional contingency planning exist among custodial grandparents. This research applied Steele and colleagues’ four styles of preparation for future care (2003)—avoider, thinker, planner, or consenter—to older custodial grandparents raising adolescent grandchildren. Nineteen grandparents participated in face-to-face interviews. Criteria were: primary caregiver for a grandchild 12 or older; grandchild in home at least 3 days weekly; and grandparent 40 or older. Recruitment included word of mouth, newspapers, and flyers. Participants were asked “What is your thinking about caregiving arrangements for your grandchild in case you are no longer able to provide care? What actual steps, if any, have you taken to begin these caregiving arrangements?” Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using conventional content analysis. The racial and ethnic composition of the grandparents were white (n=10), Black/African American (n=7), Native American (n=1), and Filipino (n=1). Most respondents were married (58%), white (53%), grandmothers (84%), with some college education or higher (79%), and an average age of 66 years. Grandparents identified as thinkers (42%), planners (32%), consenters (21%), and avoiders (5%). Two married grandfathers reported conflicting preparation styles (thinkers) in comparison to their spouses (planners). Grandparents often relied on oral opposed to formal written plans. Findings suggest research, practice, and education is needed to assess factors inhibiting aspects of contingency planning for future care among thinkers and avoiders, particularly older grandfathers.

Land Use Regression (LUR) modeling is a widely used technique to model the spatial variability of air pollutants in epidemiology. In this study, we explore whether a LUR model can predict home-to-school commuting exposure to black carbon (BC). During January and February 2019, 43 children walking to school were involved in a personal monitoring campaign measuring exposure to BC and tracking their home-to-school routes. At the same time, a previously developed LUR model for the study area was applied to estimate BC exposure on points along the route. Personal BC exposure varied widely with mean ± SD of 9003 ± 4864 ng/m3. The comparison between the two methods showed good agreement (Pearson’s r = 0.74, Lin’s Concordance Correlation Coefficient = 0.6), suggesting that LUR estimates are capable of catching differences among routes and predicting the cleanest route. However, the model tends to underestimate absolute concentrations by 29% on average. A LUR model can be useful in predicting personal exposure and can help urban planners in Milan to build a healthier city for schoolchildren by promoting less polluted home-to-school routes.

ABSTRACT Favelas are low-income urban communities in Brazil, and Maré in Rio de Janeiro has the largest cluster of favelas in the country. The prevailing view of a unique, regulated, and normative city conflicts with the reality of the continued expansion of the favelas, posing challenges for architects and urban planners in developing new strategies for integrating informal areas with the main city. This study focused on a decaying industrial area adjacent to the Maré favelas and explored a sustainable path for improving both the quality of the built environment and the quality of life of the residents. Effective infrastructure and socioeconomic links between the favelas and the city were proposed. The home production model that emerged from the favelas inspired the use of the abandoned industrial area as a home-industry incubator. The study proposed an urban regeneration strategy involving a bottom-up industry-space process evolving from home industries to group industries, and finally to larger community industries. This strategy can accelerate Maré’s development and integration with the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract Aim: This article reports upon a research study whose aim was to evaluate the running of an active ageing programme for older persons residing in a care home for older persons in Malta. Method: The research study opted for a multi-method research design. The first phase consisted of carrying out observation of the active ageing programme over a two-month period. The second phase was conducting semi-structured interviews with participants and facilitators. Results: First, that for active ageing programme in care homes to be successful the activities must be meaningful to residents. Second, that active ageing programme in care homes has the potential to improve the levels of social and emotional wellbeing, whilst also having benefits for facilitators. Finally, that active ageing programmes include a number of challenges - namely, further training for all staff in gerontological and geragogical principles, overlooking family relatives, and enabling even frail residents to join in the activities. Conclusion. Active ageing policies should go beyond a ‘third age’ lens in their endeavour to improve the quality of life of incoming and current older persons and focus more assiduously on frail and vulnerable elders. The key factor in organising active ageing programmes in a care home that are successful in enabling good quality interaction is the ability of planners to have insight on the subjective world of residents so that they gain the sensitivity and skills to coordinate activities that are meaningful to residents.
