The warehousing industry is faced with increasing customer demands and growing global competition. A major factor in the efficient operation of warehouses is the strategic storage location assignment of arriving goods, termed the dynamic storage location assignment problem (DSLAP). This paper presents a real-world use case of the DSLAP, in which deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is used to derive a suitable storage location assignment strategy to decrease transportation costs within the warehouse. The DRL agent is trained on historic data of storage and retrieval operations gathered over one year of operation. The evaluation of the agent on new data of two months shows a 6.3% decrease in incurring costs compared to the currently utilized storage location assignment strategy which is based on manual ABC-classifications. Hence, DRL proves to be a competitive solution alternative for the DSLAP and related problems in the warehousing industry.

This new work explores 260 celebrated locations of historical import in the United States. A unique publication, the only similar undertaking in the recent past is Thomas W. Paradis’s The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Landmarks (Lorenz 2011). This older Lorenz edition is not widely held in American academic or public libraries, focuses more on the visual, and also highlights seemingly less-compelling sites such as state capitol buildings, marketplaces, and warehouses. Newton-Matza’s book, on the other hand, hones in on places more widely acknowledged as historically significant, such as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Grand Canyon. Other locations included here may be closely associated with major battles or well-known figures of the American past—US presidents, writers, and inventors, for example. The latter type of entry tends to be largely biographical (e.g., the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Virginia) while others focus chiefly on whatever significant event took place there, such as Woodstock or Ground Zero.

Purpose The purpose of this paper was to document the development of a major regional department store from the firm’s start to the completion of a single block structure including the warehouses required to support its operations. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a survey of historic materials including the recently available archival materials in the Oregon Historical Society Research Library. Findings The study reveals the interaction of vision, planning and risk taking in a family enterprise over two generations. It illustrates the search for information as to what was required and the importance of architectural elements in the construction and operation of their store. Research limitations/implications The archival materials are extensive; however, over the years, much of the operating data were destroyed or lost. Although family members remain in Oregon, they are reluctant to discuss the store’s history, even though the matters that affected them took place many years after the study’s period. Originality/value Much of the information collected in the study had never been used in previous work.

As I will examine in this study of waterfront redevelopment at Jack London Square, the business plans, architectural/landscaping designs, and historic memorabilia drummed up by Oakland civic, business and port leaders, from 1951 through to the early twenty-first century, repeatedly changed their focus as a result of cross-bay rivalry. The two cities had long competed for businesses and residents, using city planning to improve their transportation infrastructure and, later, their tourist draw. From 1951 through the 1960s, themed restaurants in Jack London Square multiplied, and the Port of Oakland cobbled together seafaring artifacts and Jack London memorabilia. Starting in the 1970s, private businessmen and the Port took on grander retailing approaches that progressed from a woodsy maritime village to a shopping mall to an artisanal foods market. Each time, Jack London Square was made over in light of events across the bay: the 1960s conversion of brick warehouses and factories into the retailing/restaurant venues of Ghirardelli Square and the Cannery; the late 1970s construction of a vast shopping and entertainment complex on Pier 39; and the early 2000s redevelopment of the Ferry Building, closer to downtown San Francisco, into a locavore food emporium. Yet each time, Oakland’s attempts to compete with San Francisco fell short.

From the early-1980s, the arrival of hip hop in the UK city of Bristol created a wave of new possibilities for multiracial Bristolians. In the medium-term, this would help yield the music popularly termed ‘the Bristol Sound’, exemplified by post-hip hop performers like Tricky and Massive Attack – all of whom were part of the city’s early hip hop scene. More immediately, however, Bristol would become home to a vital hip hop party culture, centred on makeshift – and frequently illegal – parties thrown in warehouses, shebeens and small independent clubs in and around the city’s storied Black district, St. Paul’s. In this wide-ranging oral history conversation, which broadens the debate on Bristol hip hop and its diasporic sound-making, pioneering Bristol MC, Kriss ‘Krissy Kriss’ Johnson, discusses his memories and experiences of hip hop in the city. He provides fresh insights on diasporic Black identities in semi-rural contexts; the historic textures of teenage Black popular culture in Bristol in the 1970s–80s; the political realities of early-Thatcherism; the resurgence of British street racism in the 1970s; the psychogeography of Bristol neighbourhoods and historic change in St. Paul’s; the historically grounded appeals of hip hop culture as a site of affirmative teenage Black identity and possibility; the lived experience of Bristol’s DIY hip hop party culture. In doing this, Johnson offers a historically important Black perspective on a scene that has often been glossed by journalists and academics alike in terms of its utopian polyculturalism. By prioritizing his response as a young Black person in the historical particularities of his lived context, the conversation moves beyond the priorities of such accounts to provide a nuanced appreciation of Bristol’s hip hop movement in the city’s complex race and class geography. The account, moreover, recentres hip hop in the history of this party scene, which journalists have typically viewed from the prism of an overdetermined hybridity seen as peculiar to the city.

For many years in Poland, anthropogenic objects constructed underground have been very popular with tourists. In the past they fulfilled various functions (historic mines, underground merchant warehouses, military objects, special objects, caverns and grottoes). Many of them were secured and rebuilt in such a way that a new form was created. They make interesting tourist offers and still more objects can be made available to tourists. An example of strongly modified underground anthropogenic objects of very complex geometry and extremely interesting architectural form is the Underground Tourist Route (Polish: Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna – PTT) in Sandomierz. Owing to much effort and financial means, in 1960s many interesting cellars and merchant warehouses were saved from destruction – and – with the application of mining techniques, they were joint into attractive spatial forms. So far, few publications give the full characteristic and parametric data of this object. Today’s possibilities of available measurement and information technologies allow comprehensive inventory of complicated engineering constructions, as well as the 3D visualization, regarding even tiniest elements of small architecture (doors, lattice, lamps, etc.). The article presents the results of the visualization and parameterization based on the data from integrated surveying (levelling, transects, total stations, laser scanning and other direct measurements). ELEKTRONICZNA WIZUALIZACJA PODZIEMNYCH TRAS TURYSTYCZNYCH NA PRZYKŁADZIE TRASY W SANDOMIERZU W Polsce dużą popularnością turystyczną od lat cieszą się obiekty antropogeniczne wzniesione pod powierzchnią ziemi, pełniące różnorodne funkcje użytkowe w przeszłości (zabytkowe kopalnie, podziemne składy kupieckie, obiekty militarne, obiekty specjalne, jaskinie i groty). Wiele z nich zostało w stopniu istotnym zabezpieczone i przebudowane w taki sposób, by nadać im nową formę. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki wizualizacji i parametryzacji na podstawie danych zintegrowanych pomiarów geodezyjnych (niwelacji, poligonizacji, tachimetrii elektronicznej, skaningu laserowego i innych pomiarów bezpośrednich).

In the late nineteenth century, the construction of warehouse districts became an important part of the building process in the North American city. These warehouse districts were the centres of activity for the wholesalers who were the key agents for the expansion of mercantile capitalism. The warehouses themselves were often structures of unusual architectural distinction. With the railroad station, the warehouse was ordinarily the true civic monument of the North American city. This article studies the process by which the wholesale district was formed.

The great social, cultural and economic loss caused by seismic events on the cultural heritage assets have stimulated, in the last decades, studies on the risk and, in general, un the behaviour of historic structures. A great amount of data have been collected, and several databases have been developed to gather information about particular aspects of seismic risk on masonry historical heritage. The detail level of such databases is usually influenced by the required survey or intervention, with a generalised lack of boundary conditions, type of connections and constraints, parameters very important to understand the seismic behaviour of buildings. A global systematisation is required to take advantage from the considerable and precious amount of available data, linking all information on the basis of the relation between construction typologies and elements and failure mechanisms, including also survey and monitoring procedures and tools available in literature. A new web-based data warehouse has been developed to collect, systematise and analyse available data. This tool, different from all previous products, which were mere data collectors, is capable of new correlations among elements and parameters to optimise the use of the state-of-the art on the selection and development of materials and technologies for masonry building preservation. The interactive and dynamic functionalities, together with the capacity of cross-correlation of the information at different levels of knowledge and the sharing philosophy of a web-based system, make the data warehouse a powerful tool for a new innovative, integrated and knowledge based approach to the protection of cultural heritage, useful both to professionals and researchers

Ubiquitous computing-a i Interneta stvari (IoT).
The research topic of this doctoral thesis is the possibility of establishing a model for Big Data System with corresponding software-hardware architecture to support sensor networks and IoT devices.  The developed model is based on energy efficient, heterogeneous, massively parallelized SoC hardware platforms, with the support of software application architecture. (Such as an open CL) for unified operation.  In addition to current hardware, software and network computing technologies, and architecture intended to operate subcomponents of the system modeled in this paper is presented as an historical overview of their development.  Which emphasizes the tendency of the cyclic movement of the conceptual paradigm of computing, through the unique era of centralization/decentralization of computing. The thesis presents the technology and methods to accelerate operations in databases and data warehouses. We also investigate the possibilities for a better preparation of Big Data information systems to meet the needs of the newly announced IT revolution in the announced general application of computing called Ubiquitous computing and the Internet of Things (IoT).

With the increasingly widespread use and users of Internet, more and more people tend to publish their information as Web pages. However, while storing these information, Web masters have to replace information with newer one. In order to keep full track of historical data and to manage storage space efficiently at the same time, the idea of Web Warehousing was proposed. The main function of a Web Warehouse is to store the complete evolution of web pages, then to analyze the data stored in it. Among the related research fields, effective historical-data storage is an important issue. Researchers have focused on storing changes between versions with Edit Script. Among them are research topics such as RCS, SCCS, DNN, etc. They either store the changes between consecutive versions in Edit Script, or divide version information into groups. The drawback in common is that retrieving a specific version of data requires a lot of computation. Hence, following this trend, we first proposed an Edit Script encoding model using Binary-Code-Addressing Binary Tree to make the computation more effective. The main idea of Binary-Code-Addressing Binary Tree is that every node in the tree has a fixed Binary ID, and this ID is then the logical address of this node. We concluded five main categories of common queries on historical data in Web warehouses. Then we proposed operators and syntax for these queries, and the required algorithm. Finally, we constructed an experiment system to implement the operators and algorithm, to really use these operators and syntax on queries.

The Web Warehouse that we study is XML Web Warehouse specialize in storing XML Web data. We utilize some object-oriented related technology to treat every element of an XML document as an object. And we regard XML Web data as an object of a tree structure. We consider an update of XML Web data that usually only some element changes instead of whole XML document. The historical data of different time are regarded as an independent version. We separate the Temporal Data from the XML document, and we utilize the corresponding way of version and time make every version of XML Web data extend to every element. In the historical data part of the element changed, we only store the content of each element version by Edit Script. And the binary tree storage structure we have adopted can improve the sequential Edit Script structure. At the end of this research, Experiment that we make proves that our theory is correct.

This Major Degree Project explores the concept of “complete streets” and the framing of an appropriate “complete streets” checklist for historic districts and character neighbourhoods in downtown contexts, attempting to learn especially from the case of Winnipeg’s Warehouse District Neighbourhood. A “complete streets” checklist is considered to include a combination of infrastructure and urban design considerations, such as sidewalks, bike lanes, intersections, transit stops, curb extensions, travel lane widths, and parking needs. It proceeds from the premise that if an individual street or system of streets is ‘complete’, individuals will be more likely to reduce the time spent using automobiles, and increase the time expended on walking, biking, or using other transit alternatives, while making travel on the streets safer and more enjoyable for all users. The MDP examines the current street-related infrastructure and uses within the Warehouse District Neighbourhood of Downtown Winnipeg and discusses the relevance of current or recent City of Winnipeg plans and proposals. Taking the form of a practicum, the research sought to inform and engage local planners, engineers and public officials regarding a “complete streets” approach to their work – primarily in terms of the recommended framing of a complete streets checklist as well as recommendations for future area improvements in the Warehouse District Neighbourhood, demonstrating the usefulness of the checklist.

A database is generally referred as a collection of data organized in a formatted structure for storage, accessibility and retrieval. There are various types of databases which include XML, CSV files, flat files and spreadsheets etc., the main two categories of databases includes data from OLTP (Online Transactional Processing) and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing). Both systems store data in the form of tables, columns, indexes, keys, views and data types. MySQL, Oracle and NoSQL are some query languages used to query the database. In the other side data warehouses are also the types of database that integrates data from multiple sources and provisions the data for analytical process. Data warehouse is an OLAP database. Data warehouses are mainly designed to enable and support business intelligence mainly data analytics. Data warehouses are often consists of huge volume of historical data. As a whole data warehouse collects data from different sources and stores it into a single repository for analytics and decision making. This chapter presents an overview about databases, types of databases, data warehouses and the differences between databases and data warehouses.

Data Warehouses typically are building blocks of decision support systems in companies and public administration. The data contained in a data warehouse is analyzed by means of OnLine Analytical Processing tools, which provide sophisticated features for aggregating and comparing data. Decision support applications depend on the reliability and accuracy of the contained data. Typically, a data warehouse does not only comprise the current snapshot data but also historical data to enable, for instance, analysis over several years. And, as we live in a changing world, one criterion for the reliability and accuracy of the results of such long period queries is their comparability. Whereas data warehouse systems are well prepared for changes in the transactional data, they are, surprisingly, not able to deal with changes in the master data. Nonetheless, such changes do frequently occur. The crucial point for supporting changes is, first of all, being aware of their existence. Second, once you know that a change took place, it is important to know which change (i.e., knowing about differences between versions and relations between the elements of different versions). For data warehouses this means that changes are identified and represented, validity of data and structures are recorded and this knowledge is used for computing correct results for OLAP queries. This chapter is intended to motivate the need for powerful maintenance mechanisms for data warehouse cubes. It presents some basic terms and definitions for the common understanding and introduces the different aspects of data warehouse maintenance. Furthermore, several approaches addressing the problem are presented and classified by their capabilities.

Data warehouses are information repositories specialized in supporting decision making. Since the decisional process typically requires an analysis of historical trends, time and its management acquire a huge importance. In this paper we consider the variety of issues, often grouped under term temporal data warehousing, implied by the need for accurately describing how information changes over time in data warehousing systems. We recognize that, with reference to a three-levels architecture, these issues can be classified into some topics, namely: handling data/schema changes in the data warehouse, handling data/schema changes in the data mart, querying temporal data, and designing temporal data warehouses. After introducing the main concepts and terminology of temporal databases, we separately survey these topics. Finally, we discuss the open research issues also in connection with their implementation on commercial tools.

A data warehouse (DW) is a collection of technologies aimed at enabling the knowledge worker (executive, manager, analyst, etc.) to make better and faster decisions. The architecture of a DW exhibits various layers of data in which data from one layer are derived from data of the lower layer (see Figure 1). The operational databases, also called data sources, form the starting layer. They may consist of structured data stored in open database and legacy systems, or even in files. The central layer of the architecture is the global DW. The global DW keeps a historical record of data that result from the transformation, integration, and aggregation of detailed data found in the data sources. An auxiliary area of volatile data, data staging area (DSA) is employed for the purpose of data transformation, reconciliation, and cleaning. The next layer of data involves client warehouses, which contain highly aggregated data, directly derived from the global warehouse. There are various kinds of local warehouses, such as data mart or on-line analytical processing (OLAP) databases, which may use relational database systems or specific multidimensional data structures. The whole environment is described in terms of its components, metadata, and processes in a central metadata repository, located at the DW site.

Numerous architectural monuments throughout Ukraine were once proud and were the center of historical events. With a glorious and rich history, but forgotten by people because they are located outside the city limits and are not included in well-known tourist routes. Historic buildings are examples of neoclassicism, baroque, neo-gothic and many other styles. During Soviet times, they were turned into barracks, chemical storage facilities, food and weapon warehouses, and now they are empty and collapsing. A correct and calculated approach to reconstruction, restoration and monitoring of their further condition will make it possible to turn such objects into the cultural and historical center of a rural agglomeration. This will help maintain historical memory, preserve culture and heritage, and also give economic impetus to the development of the area where they are located. Leakage of worn-out enclosing structures is the biggest problem of abandoned architectural monuments. This causes uneven wetting of the structures. And then the task is posed of how to properly dry such enclosing structures and not damage them. All these old building envelopes are colloidal capillary porous bodies (CCPB). Drying of such massive structures occurs due to heating. The problem of the optimal heating rate of a massive colloidal capillary-porous body is considered. The restrictions that are imposed on the internal thermal stresses in the specified body are taken into account, especially at the first low-temperature stage when heating the colloidal capillary porous bodies. Due to the temperature distribution over the mass (over the cross-section) of the colloidal capillary porous bodies, compressive and tensile stresses arise inside the body. Colloidal capillary porous bodies can be destroyed by these stresses, leading to the appearance of various microdefects.

In this paper we highlight the advantages of adopting a broad simulation model of material flows as a useful foundation for developing system support for warehouse procedures that use WMS. The warehouse under consideration has a rectangular shape with parallel lanes and operates in two distinct seasons, necessitating different storage methods. The modified simulation model incorporates several strategies to enhance efficiency. Firstly, the S-shape routing technique is employed to optimize the movement of order pickers within the warehouse, minimizing travel time and increasing productivity. Additionally, a return technique is integrated to minimize empty travel distance, further reducing operational costs. Storage assignment within the warehouse is determined based on the frequency of item occurrence and the required storage technology. To establish an effective layout for each season, the study examines historical demand data and utilizes ABC analysis to classify goods. This dual layout design approach accounts for the unique demand patterns of each season, enabling the warehouse to maximize storage capacity and minimize operational bottlenecks. By considering elements such as seasonal demand, storage technologies, labor routing, and product classification, this research provides valuable insights for improving order picking efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing customer service in seasonal warehouses. Implementing the proposed simulation-based technique can empower businesses to optimize their operations and thrive amidst changing market conditions, ultimately leading to increased profitability and customer satisfaction.

Industrial structures are cultural legacy sites in need of protection that carry the social, cultural, historical and architectural properties of their respective eras into the present day. Due to the changing production demands and technology, these structures lost their usage value and have been rendered obsolete. The interventions implemented and new functions provided to ensure the continuity of industrial structures must be in accordance with the character of the building. Our study focuses on the renovation process of one of the first industrial premises of the city of İzmir Alsancak Tekel Storages located in Port Rear Area. Industrial building history in the region dates back to the 1900s, when industrial and storage structures have been built. A new master development plan that entered into force in 1989, conserning the fate of these industrial buildings. As the result of the passed legislation, old tekel storages have been transformed to offices and cultural centres. In the scope of this study the changes that occurred in order to refunction the Alsancak Tekel Storages have been inspected. As a method, a detailed literature review of the history of the region was made, and data on the buildings examined before and after the restoration were collected. As a result, the region’s historical development, status of the buildings before the restoration, architectural quality of the buildings after the restoration and role of the buildings in relation to the city have all been examined and collected data were evaluated comparatively.

The article deals with the problem of formation of urban-ecological framework of a large historical city, including two subsystems: natural-ecological framework (or natural framework) and urban-ecological framework (system of green areas of the city). Architectural and landscape revitalization of destructive urban landscapes is considered as one of the ways to solve the problem. Expansion of the system of green areas of the city through architectural and landscape transformation of postindustrial, post-railroad, post-communal warehouse, etc. territories is an effective way to form a sustainable urban environment. For the city of Saratov, this method is the only possible way to increase the area of greenery in the historic center, characterized by high density of buildings and "sealed" soil cover. The lack of landscape and recreational spaces in the city center can be compensated by the formation of a linear system of parks in the coastal zone, the communication framework of which will be a new embankment being built along the entire historic city center. The formation of park territories of the planned recreational zone is carried out on the following principles: environmental sustainability, social justice and economic efficiency.
