Resumo:
Chaos Hill is a collection of short stories that represents the duality and paradox of existence in the lives of characters searching for a better place. The stories display man's connection to the physical world and his attempts to free himself from its cycles. The action of each story occurs within twenty-four hours and is concentrated on small changes and motion as resolution. In Chaos Hill, the world spins gravity into oppression, day and night roll relentlessly on, and only when dreams of escape die is the battle won.

An urban community is a fusion of new and old that is constantly changing. We understand better the plight of a community through raising awareness of its unique history and visual character. Linking individual and community experiences offers an opportunity for dialogue, especially as long-time residents and their new neighbors learn about their different pasts and explore their common future. Community building happens from within, when many individuals sharing common values create positive change.

Mater Hill is loosely based on a true story. Liz has always craved and been denied her mother's love. After several years of trauma caused by losing her mother in a boarding house fire, she discovers that arson was involved and investigates, seeking justice. When she mediates with her mother's killer, she effects an emotional substitution. They fall in love and she persuades him to help her convict the main culprit. Even before the trial fails, she begins to reject him, psychologically completing the process of her own separation and individuation. Once Liz has this stronger sense of self, she can experience real compassion for the arsonist.

Stoughton-Jackson, Courtney. "Maintaining a hill prairie ecosystem". Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1061874.

Resumo:
Fire has been an important influence on the structure and health of the North American grasslands for hundreds of years. In Jersey County Illinois, two natural loess hill prairies were studied to compare the effectiveness of varying management regimes. The purpose was to determine how a burn vs. a nonburn management regime enhances or hinders the establishment of the prairie grasses and forbs in a tallgrass hill prairie ecosystem. The variables studied included: the vegetational abundance, the frequency, and the biomass of the species that were present. In addition the soil's organic matter content and pH were measured. Overall, the Fire Road Prairie, or the unburned prairie, proved to be the community that was deteriorating and becoming unproductive. Whereas, the Osage Prairie contained a balance of grasses and forbs that were representative of a healthy and thriving community. The data supported the existing theory that a burn management plan does help the overall stability and productivity of a tallgrass ecosystem.

Hambrick, Scott Randolph. "A house on a hill". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54026.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The design of the house began with a response to topography. The placing of the house at the bend of a hillside prompted a rotation of axis in the plan. As a result, the thesis becomes about the architectural implications of this rotation. Through formal studies in plan, what was originally conceived as a rotation of axis developed into a rotation of volumes. The interaction and transition between the two volumes becomes critical in mediating the rotation. The rotation can be signified by a change of material, or a change of volume, making it a point of emphasis and a part of the architecture. Materiality is important to the transition between volumes, as well as to the composition and expression of the elevations. The composition of a material in elevation can serve as an indicator of the quality and function of the interior spaces and its relation to the exterior spaces. New solutions to particular problems, such as the bridge element between the two parts of the house, are found through exploring and ultimately deciding upon the best architectural resolution. The means for exploring in architecture are drawing and building.

Gouws, Cliff. "Magazine Hill : a weathered continuum". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29983.

Resumo:
NDLTD Innovative ETD Award 2012. This dissertation is rooted within a process of unification, a personal struggle to understand the fragile relationship that exists between architecture and time. The project focuses on architecture’s potential to adapt according to the passage of time, through the process of aging and weathering. This study is founded in the aim to re-establish a connection between the continuum of time and architecture. The project places contemporary commemorative architecture under the limelight, criticising the static notion of heritage commemoration through the typologies of museums and memorials. These typologies often evolve into static monuments, where the relevance to contemporary society can be questioned. The architectural response of this dissertation is thus focused on commemoration through everyday use. The proposed historical site (Magazine Hill) forms a comprehensive construct of different layers of time and influence. This mysterious, abandoned and isolated site consists of two ammunition magazines, five bomb shelters and ammunition factories, all structures that represent an era of unrest in South Africa. In 1945 a mysterious explosion of the Central Magazine scarred the face of Magazine Hill, leading the activities on the site to an early death, trapping architecture in time and abandonment. The proposed programme forms part of the conceptual premise of mediation, unifying different opposites inherent in both Magazine Hill and the South African context. A brass foundry is proposed to recycle the spent ammunition shells of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), thereby introducing brass artists as a public interface to Magazine Hill. Where ammunition was once produced, ammunition is now reduced. This programme could form mediation between the public and the military; exposing different layers of the past by reinstating a connection between architecture and time. This project consisted of the design and presentation of a monastery in Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C. The scheme developed consisted of a church, library, refectory(kitchen and dining space), campanile(bell tower), four chapels, individual cells and gardens, and exterior connecting spaces including a central and sub-plaza. The monastery design was developed in terms of the circulation of the monks from their individual cells to the various communal centers at the top of the hill. Both visual and topographical means were examined in this development. This volume includes the completed monastery as well as some of the stages reached in the development of the finished design.

An in-situ water-induced soil erosion study of two years duration was conducted at a low slope of about 10%, and also on steep slopes of about 50%, 60% and 70% at the experimental site located at a soil and water research area contiguous to the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Applied Mathematics of the Visayas State College of Agriculture (ViSCA). ViSCA is located in the town of Baybay at the island of Leyte in humid tropical Philippines (latitude of 10 degrees 44' north and longitude of 124 degrees 48' east). The study has the following aims, namely: 1) to investigate the effect of local farming practices on soil erosion, particularly at steep slopes; 2) to study the hydrology and soil erosion processes in steep slope conditions in humid tropical climate; and 3) to apply and determine the limitations of a physical process-oriented sediment transport model for water-induced soil erosion model (Griffith University Erosion System Template, GUEST) to a very permeable soil under very high rainfall conditions. In the context of the steep slope experiments at ViSCA: a) across the slope planting of corn is equally effective in controlling soil loss as hedged farming alone or in combination with peanut intercrop; b) across the slope planting of corn in hedged runoff plots is as effective in controlling soil loss as when combined with peanut intercrop; c) farmer’s practice of planting a rowcrop like corn along the slope (providing ready-made downslope pathways for runoff water thus, encouraging flow-driven soil erosion) produces significant soil loss, often larger than from a bare runoff plot; d) hedgerows significantly reduced sediment concentration provided they remain intact; e) "failure" in hedgerows, often results in massive soil loss, being even greater than that in a comparable bare runoff plot. (Failure is manifested by runoff breaching the litter barrier at the base of the hedgerow in a localized position, leading to concentrated flow and extension of rills upslope from base of hedgerow) of hedged runoff plot (even though contour planted) and f) application of stubble in combination with across slope planting in hedged runoff plots (with or without a closely growing intercrop) provided both maximum surface cover (aerial and contact) and protection against soil loss in steep slopes. These conclusions are likely to apply to crops similar to corn, with an intercrop similar to peanut in morphology and root system. These conclusions might also be expected to apply to low slopes, though the effect of such protection might not be as pronounced as in steep slope runoff plots. Soil erosion mechanisms in steep slopes are dominated mainly by the runoff-driven processes of entrainment and re-entrainment. Average sediment concentration c and total soil loss M are shown to be functions of positive coefficient runoff related regressors and a parameter that measures rills formed and permanently imprinted on soil surface, and of negative coefficient regressors related to surface contact cover, at least for the steep slopes considered in this study. The relatively high streampower associated with overland flow on steep slopes suggests that overland flow dominates over rainfall impact as a source of soil sediment concentration. This was confirmed by the low value of the measured ratio of soil sediment concentration shed by net-rainfall detachment trays to that lost from the bare runoff plots. On the effect of surface contact cover on average sediment concentration c, the following findings were made, namely: a) surface contact cover of only about 20% to 30% is sufficient to reduce c to low levels, assuming the cover is well distributed; b) an "exponential-decay" form of relationship existed between surface contact cover and the average sediment concentration from the non-bare soil without normalizing with respect to sediment concentration from a reference bare soil runoff plot; and c) such nonlinear relationship is indicative of the dominating runoff processes of entrainment and re-entrainment compared to the linear form of relationships if rainfall –driven processes of detachment and re-detachment dominate. In runoff dominated soil erosion processes, surface contact cover (including both living and dead vegetative cover close enough to the soil surface to impede overland flow) is more significant in curtailing soil erosion than aerial surface cover. ...continued.

This thesis examines the role played by philosophy in the poetry and criticism of Geoffrey Hill. Despite countless references to philosophy throughout Hill's critical authorship, there exists no study of any length on this vital aspect of his thought. Through close readings of his poetry, criticism, and archival material, I attempt to demonstrate that philosophy has played a more crucial role in Hill's work than has hitherto been assumed. Hill's sceptical attitude to philosophy is intimately connected with his understanding of poetry as a sensate form of cognition. My thesis examines the ways Hill's poetry and criticism responds to the challenges imposed upon this scepticism by a tradition of philosophy that emphasises the importance of the aesthetic to its analyses of modernity's contradictions. I argue that a tradition of Anglophone Idealist thinkers, from S.T. Coleridge, via T.H. Green and F.H. Bradley, to Gillian Rose, is of sustained relevance to Hill's work, shaping the way he thinks about politics, ethics and literature. In particular, German Idealism's attempts to negotiate universality and particularity via an emphasis on the aesthetic bases of critical thought lay the groundwork for an understanding of poetry as a mode of cognition. Reading Hill's poetry from For the Unfallen to Oraclau/Oracles, I try to show the ways in which problems traditionally conceived of as philosophical can be cognised in prosody and syntax. In part a vindication of Hill's elevation of poetry over philosophy, these readings also show the degree to which Hill's ‘craft of vision' is indebted to conceptual and aesthetic models supplied by philosophy.

Few post-war Anglophone poets have constructed an intellectual hinterland as rich and problematic as Geoffrey Hill. This thesis examines one crucial strand of his thought: the deeply-implicated, yet uneasy imbrication of poetry and theology, style and faith. In the essay ‘Language, Suffering, and Silence’, Hill proposes ‘a theology of language’, while in the preface to his 2003 collection of essays Style and Faith, he insists that with exemplary writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, ‘style is faith’. Finally, in ‘Eros in F.H. Bradley and T.S. Eliot’, Hill searchingly touches on the central problem in considering art in relation to faith: ‘the fundamental dilemma of the poetic craft [is] that it is simultaneously an imitation of the divine fiat and an act of enormous human self-will.’ This thesis proposes that such a ‘fundamental dilemma’, while a source of anxiety for Hill’s post-Eliotic poetics, energises and enriches his poetry. I argue that Hill’s ‘theology of language’ is derived from two radically-opposed intellectual traditions: one lineage from the philological diligence of the English Reformation, the other from the apotheosis of style in the post-Romantic poetics of individuals such as Wallace Stevens and W.B. Yeats. I situate Hill’s thoughts on the relationship of poetry to religious faith in terms of his intellectual and aesthetic engagements with literary precursors: John Donne, John Milton, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and W.B. Yeats.

Resumo:
Behaviour to increased water velocity is examined in fast stream fish (Otocinclus, Hypostomus, Pterygoplichthys, Chaetostoma and Gyrinocheilus) and a slow water form (Farlowella). Behaviour can be divided into two stages; resting and adhesion (Chapter I). In Otocinclus a third fin extension stage is apparent. Based on the slipping velocity of live and dead fish it is determined that Gyrinocheilus has the greatest station holding ability on a smooth perspex surface. This is attributed to a complete seal produced by its oral sucker lips (closed sucker). Station-holding ability is also examined on rougher surfaces. Slipping does not occur in any of the genera at water velocities up to 90 cm s⁻¹. Morphological adaptations (eg. oral sucker, pectoral fins, frictional pad and odontodes) that may contribute to increasing slipping velocity are examined. In Otocinclus these structures are analyzed using a Scanning Electron Microscope. Otocinclus is the only genera with the ventral dermal plates between the pelvic and pectoral fins organized laterally into a frictional pad. Drag on fish is directly measured with strain gauges and used to calculate drag coefficients (0.10 - 0.94; Chapter II). Drag coefficients for low fineness ratio (length/height < 10) forms at Reynold's numbers below 10⁴ compare poorly with literature values for technical bodies. Drag coefficients determined for fish are high due to roughness and interference drag produced by the fins. Using morphological measurements, dead slipping velocities, drag coefficients, static frictional coefficients and submerged body weight, lift coefficients (-0.55 - 1.23) calculated. Fast stream fish maximize slipping speed by having high frictional coefficients (0.67 - 0.95, on a smooth perspex surface), density (1.03 -1.10 g cm⁻³), rheotactic suction pressure (13 - 173 N m⁻²) and negative lift Although Farlowella has high density (1.129 g cm⁻³) and a low drag coefficient (0.23), its lift to drag ratio is high (6.71) and rheotactic suction pressures (2 - 27 N m⁻²) are low. In general Farlowella does not exhibit hydrodynamic, behavioural or morphological characteristics that enhance station-holding.

Resumo:
Hill farming systems in Scotland are the result of long evolution and adaptation to financial, social and political changes. Farming in the hills is a major contributor to rural industry and plays an important role in the economy, environment and social cohesion of these areas. However, it is fragile and has been dependent for many decades on high and continued levels of support payments. Agricultural land managers in these hill areas are also under increasing pressure from the other land use groups whose interests lie outside farming. With recent agricultural reforms, shifts in policy orientations regarding land use and changes in support, the future role of hill farming remains uncertain. This thesis sets out to examine the role of hill farming in this context of change, by investigating how hill farmers respond to changing policy, by understanding what other interested stakeholders expect from the hills, and exploring how hill farmers may have to adapt their farming system in response to these changes and expectations. Using an adaptive conjoint analysis method, stakeholders’ expectations have been assessed. Multivariate analysis and participative research with hill farmers have also been carried out, to typify their management responses to policy changes, using the 2003 CAP reform as an example. Stakeholders’ expectations and farmers’ types were then used in a linear programming optimisation model, to explore how hill farmers can maximise their financial margins under different policy and market change scenarios, and how their motivation is a drive towards adaptation. The results suggest that whilst livestock production is identified by stakeholders as one of the most important features for the hill areas, the continuity of livestock farming in the hills is threatened, as hill farmers are strongly affected by policy and market changes. This research also shows that there is a strong diversity in hill farming systems and in hill farmers’ management styles and motivations. That, perhaps, is one of the most important factors to acknowledge when formulating policies. This research also highlights the vulnerability of hill farming businesses (especially hill cattle production) to market price volatility, policy, subsidies and support changes, making it difficult for any hill farmer to withstand these fluctuations. Although different land uses, such as planting forestry, potentially bring substantial economic benefits, they are dependent upon many other restricting factors, including government grants, and require long-term commitment before benefits are seen. Integration of different land uses and productions could be one economic option for these areas, but a set of measures, perhaps including livestock-linked subsidies that recognise the diversity of hill farmers is needed, as well as options for hill farmers to be able to provide other public goods. Unless there is stability in market prices, a policy drive towards increasing efficiency, adequate subsidies and support and more readily attractive diversification options, including the provision of other ecosystem services linked to these grassland systems, this thesis suggests that there is a danger of hill land abandonment, a further decrease in hill farming activity, leading eventually to a decline in rural areas, not unlike many other marginal hill and mountain areas in the UK and Europe.

Abstract: In this work the Hill problem dynamics is analyzed using two different approaches. In the first approach, still in the realm of Newtonian mechanics, we use potentials that reproduce General Relativity effects. We use the Paczynski-Wiita and one of the Artemova, Bj¨ornsson e Novikov (ABN) potentials. These potentials reproduce effects that arise in the context of the Schwarzschild metric (event horizon) and of the Kerr metric (Lense-Thirring effect), respectively. On the second approach the equations of motion are obtained using general relativity, from the approximate metric of a binary system obtained from post-Newtonian expansions up to first order (1PN). In the analysis of the dynamics we study the stability of bounded orbits using classical tools, like Poincare sections and Lyapunov exponents. We also study open trajectories using Fractal Escape analysis. From our results we remark that two features. For the ABN potential there is an influence of the rotations on the stability of the orbits. In general relativity there is a limit where the system, in general chaotic, become stable, in disagreement with the pseudo-Newtonian potentials, in particular the Paczy'nski-Wiita potential.

This thesis is an exploration of three architectural types: regia, tholus, and theatrum which put together in the form of a building would demonstrate the nature of architecture. My quest traces these types in time and geography and combines them in a play that takes place in the form of a building in Blacksburg, Virginia and on the foothills of mythical Mount Alban near Rome, Italy. Furthermore, this thesis addresses questions regarding methods of construction techniques, and building materials used in each of the building forms presented. In doing so it reinterprets a traditional construction technique through a study model.

The highlands of northern Thailand are an example of a contradictory situation arising when a centralised government system extends its control to remote areas and clashes with traditional shifting cultivation practices. On the government side, policy is characterised by conflicting interests between forest preservation on the one hand, and the integration of ethnic minorities on the other. Hilltribes, on the other hand, are looking for land security to meet their subsistence needs. It is a precondition for them to modify their traditional farming systems or to explore other alternatives to secure a livelihood. The issue has become one of mediation and conflict resolution in order to overcome the dichotomy between forest protection and agricultural subsistence. In spite of a lack of policy framework, highland development has shifted towards more participatory approaches, for example Community Based Land Use Planning and Local Watershed Management (CLM) of the Thai-German Highland Development Programme (TG-HDP) in Mae Hong Son province. This research project combined the CLM approach with GIS in order to go beyond the demarcation of land types and to connect the village level to higher planning bodies like the emerging Tambon (sub-district) Administration Organisations. In light of the fundamental problem of highland development described above, and building on the CLM approach, land use maps were digitised to help overcome contradictions between central land use classifications and local village boundaries. By crosschecking topographic models and maps with villagers and government agencies, a communication platform could be created for the formulation of land use plans. Stumbling blocks to participatory planning are illustrated and recommendations for a co-ordinated policy for highland development are made. In the current move towards decentralisation, the newly forming Tambon (or sub-district) Administrative Organisations (TAO) will evolve as the key link between the state and society. One potential to deal with differing stakeholder priorities at Tambon level could evolve from the current restructuring of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOAC) as part of the administrative reform. A part of this reform at grass-roots level has been the introduction of Technology Transfer Centres (TTC) initiated in 1998, with 82 of them established nationwide by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DOAE). In this context the Tambon will be a test for participatory land use planning, both in terms of a technical perspective with new Technology Transfer Centres, as well as an administrative one with existing Tambon Administrative Organisations. The plans to link TTCs with TAOs need to consider the importance of representation of key agencies like forestry and land development for aspects of land management, as well as local administration and social welfare for the registration of villages with clear and mutually agreed boundaries. A bottom-up approach would need to focus on the three main problem areas identified during the research, namely rice sufficiency, forest fallow management, and village boundaries. As long as this state of land insecurity persists, hill tribes will resort to strategies to keep enough land for agricultural production, like the declaration of up to twice the number of upland fields under cultivation, and the interplanting of hedgerows in fallow areas to indicate that the land is used. For the time being a unified planning approach does not exist, but a stage of public debate has been reached in northern Thailand, including those of minority hill tribes, that the process of institutionalisation will continue as the country follows a path to democracy. The resolution of problems and sustainable land use planning will turn into a testing ground for the application of good governance at the local level.

Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, like all colleges and universities, has some interesting history. In this case, for my thesis project, I looked at specific tales regarding several buildings on campus that one hears upon arrival to campus. The buildings I included are Potter Hall, Barnes Campbell, Rodes- Harlin, Van Meter, Florence Schneider, McLean Hall, and Pearce-Ford Tower. I explored the details of the traditional oral narratives and compared those details from personal or close to personal experience. Next, I analyzed the details that have stayed the same over time or changed. To accomplish my project I went to a few of the Welcome Week campus tours, conducted audio and video interviews, archival research, as well as video recording the annual ghost walk in October given by the Communications department. The project comprises mainly of a documentary film with a complimentary written component. What I found was that the stories show some correlation between the traditional oral narratives and the first hand experiences such as names, times, experiences, and location of the events. In conclusion, I have found that in oral tales, certain details stay the same, change, and also become transformed over time. Western, like all colleges, has events that touch people’s lives and because of that impact, as well as the uniqueness of these stories, it means that certain stories will continue to be told. For further research, I would include the rest of the stories that one hears at Western including Phi Delta Theta, Delta Tau Delta, Lambda Chi Alphas, Kappa Sigma Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Ivan Wilson as well as to continue doing further research on these oral narratives. I also would like to look at other colleges, larger and smaller, in order to get a larger sample of oral narratives at different locations over time.

This study explores the career of British architect Oliver Hill (1887-1968), focusing mainly on the twenty year period from 1919 to 1939. The interwar era marks the most productive phase of Hill’s oeuvre, embracing the unprecedented changes in architecture and society. As a figure marginalised by recent Modernist historiography, Hill is commonly viewed as an eclectic architect of lightweight concerns. Hill’s Modern buildings are seen as poor relations to the work of the fêted Modern Architectural Research group, a view this study seeks to redress. This new research into Hill’s oeuvre will reveal the significant role he played in the development of British interwar architecture. Hill’s complex position is assessed in terms of national tradition and modernity. A study of Hill’s formative years draws out the constant cultural threads that shaped the core of his architectural outlook. Key forms of precedent and influence, studied and assimilated by Hill, are investigated and set within a wider context to evaluate the avant-gardism of his approach. Analysis of Hill’s response to architectural journalism and cultural theory of the period seeks to identify his place within contemporary movements. In light of these strands of influence, selected Hill buildings and texts are compared and contrasted to establish his position within the interwar British milieu. This thesis contributes to current discourse, which seeks to challenge the view that modernity and tradition represent binary opposites. Using Hill’s career as a touchstone, it chronicles the shifting definition of modernism in 1930s Britain against the theoretical perspective of writers, such as Pevsner and J.M. Richards.

Trauma Informed Community Building (TICB) is a new approach to community development that utilizes a "trauma" lens when engaging with communities that have been negatively impacted by concentrations of poverty and crime, social isolation and economic disinvestment. TICB first acknowledges the adverse effects persistent trauma has on individuals and communities and how these effects challenge "traditional" community building strategies. The practice involves a set of intentional strategies at every level of the social-ecological model-individual, interpersonal, community and system-to reduce the amount of chaos and stressors in individuals' lives, to build social cohesion among neighbors and institutions and to foster community resiliency over time. By implementing these strategies, the authors hypothesize individuals will increase their 'readiness for change,' which, in turn, lays the foundation and support for effective program and service delivery and sustainable individual and community change. They argue these two outcomes are critical when working with "trauma-impacted" communities that are undergoing any kind of major transition and disruptions-i.e., housing redevelopment and/or relocation. TICB was created by BRIDGE Housing Corporation (BRIDGE), a nonprofit affordable housing developer in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, based off of its six years of community building experience in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood, as part of the master redevelopment of Potrero Terrace-Annex public housing under San Francisco's HOPE SF initiative. In this thesis, I utilize the case study methodology and mixed-method techniques to explore what it means to approach community building with a "trauma" lens. I explore the evolution, implementation and early impacts of TICB at Potrero Terrace-Annex and I assess the value of TICB's framework as a whole and key lessons learned and challenges. Specifically, I examine the extent to which BRIDGE's community building activities have positively impacted the social dynamics of the economically- and socially-diverse North and South side Potrero Hill communities, increased public housing residents' civic participation and capacity, and helped transform systems, namely democratic processes and public education. I conclude with recommendations to inform policy, practice and future research.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The trawler industry is on the brink of proserity. This progress will result in both the trawler industry and the state amending their policy formulation to adapt to changing circumstances. The government will, for instance, have to consider subsidising the building of boats and the establishment of infrastructure, which is becoming increasingly expensive, and is already being done abroad. On the other hand, planning and organisation of trawler industries will have to be done in close consultation with the government, who is in fact responsible for fish sources. This will result in an enormous responsibility for the government, who will have to improve research on fish resources and availability of fish species. This information is of the utmost importance to trawler industries that have to plan for future production and sales. The progress of trawler industries is not just influenced by the government but also by their own internal planning. Future development will definitely require more capital outlay from industries in the form of modernized catching and processing equipment. In the present-day highly competitive and rapidly changing environment it is difficult to generate funds if no assets can be shown. Smaller enterprises that are not financially strong enough to establish their own infrastructure, should consider amalgamation with other small or large enterprises. The author is of the opinion that the possibility to obtain the necessary funds for the establishment of an own infrastructure without the required security, should exist with an efficient business plan. Insufficient planning in new enterprises is possibly the major contributing factor towards failure. Without investing capital at this early stage, new ideas can be tested on paper by means of planning. A literature study was undertaken to evaluate the opinions of various authors on a business plan. Factors for success in a good business plan were highlighted as follows: keep the business plan brief; do not over-diversify the enterprise; avoid describing technical products and manufacturing process in a way only comprehensible by an expert; organise and wrap the business plan effectively; the plan must be future orientated; avoid exageration; highlight critical risks; discuss and include any relevant problems; take care that the business plan is as complete as possible; and identify the target market and avoid ambiguous, vague and unrealistic statements. A business plan has been compiled for the purpose of this study. using the preceding information. Finally, a recommendation regarding future capital absorption and extension has been made to the company concerned.
