This prospective longitudinal study investigated the association between childhood factors (individual, family, and school characteristics) and later antisocial behavior (official juvenile delinquency and adult crime) for students identified with high-incidence disabilities (i.e., learning disabilities, emotional disturbance). The sample consisted of 1,370 economically disadvantaged, predominantly minority students living in a large urban area. Findings indicated that students with high-incidence disabilities had higher rates of juvenile delinquency and adult crime. Individual (classroom adjustment), family (parent participation in school and child abuse/neglect), and school factors (preschool program participation, school quality, and school mobility) were differentially associated with juvenile delinquency and adult crime while controlling for demographics and early child and family risks. Implications for intervention, policy, and future research to address the needs of students with high-incidence disabilities are discussed.

The article reveals the peculiarities of reading practices of Ukrainian high school students in comparison with the practices of using visual electronic media, and also finds out whether there is a correspondence between the genre preferences of high school students and the actual genre content of the school curriculum in Ukrainian and foreign literature. It is noted that, in Western sociology, considerable attention is paid to the study of the process of formation of reading skills in pre-school and school-age children, which significantly affects their overall academic performance. The empirical part of the article is based on the results of a study conducted in September-October 2023 using the method of in-depth semi-structured interviews with ten Ukrainian high school students. It is emphasized that the participants of the study ranked social media or movies in the first place in the rating of genres, while literature was ranked second or third, and video games were more often ranked fourth. It is noted that the attitude of high school students towards literature changes in adolescence; they begin to value reading practices that are not controlled from the outside, but chosen independently for self-improvement. It is emphasized that the favorite literary genres of Ukrainian high school students are science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, detective stories, and romance novels. The results of the content analysis of school textbooks of Ukrainian and foreign literature for 10th and 11th grades revealed the absence of literary works of the genres preferred by high school students. It is concluded that it is necessary to reform school programs of Ukrainian and foreign literature in order to make them more consistent with the literary genre preferences of Ukrainian high school students. The genre attractiveness of the school literature curriculum can become a powerful “pull” factor for students compared to the “push” influence of social networks and electronic media.

In this article, the problem of declining reader interest among high school students is considered. A way of solving this problem is proposed: increasing high school students' interest in reading by using modern technologies. The research methods used in this paper include theoretical (analysis of scientific, non-fiction and fiction literature, followed by analysis and synthesis of obtained data), as well as empirical (a survey in order to determine the reading activity of students, comparison and analysis of obtained data, systematization and statistical processing of research materials) methods. The author has examined several modern information and communication resources, of which those most suitable for the purpose of this study have been selected: an online survey, a poster, a book trailer and an Internet forum. The results of this study demonstrated a positive dynamic in 10th grade students' reader interest, thus confirming the hypothesis.

The article is devoted to the topical issue of teaching creative writing to high school students in Ukrainian schools. Based on the analysis of foreign and Ukrainian studies, the authors of the paper clarified the concept of «creative writing», outlined its fundamental difference from academic writing as a component of a foreign language curriculum and its importance in the process of teaching English. The article provides a definition of creative writing and outlines its fundamental separate status in relation to academic writing. It is emphasized that, according to many scholars, creative writing is defined as the author's self-expression. Creative writing is subjective in nature; it involves the author's non-standard thinking; encourages recourse to imagination, the possibility of realizing non-standard thinking, feelings, ideas. It is also noted that there are a lot of different types of creative writing, that can be classified as fiction or non-fiction. This work also outlines the prerequisites for teaching creative writing. These are: intensive reading of works by prominent writers, poets or screenwriters, as well as bloggers and speechwriters; the need to involve students in observation outside of school, heuristic conversations, etc. It is noted that such a process is natural for the development of a child's language, and is also a way of reflecting on the information received. The study provides examples of various techniques for teaching creative writing, which involve such aspects as: writing an individual essay after visiting emotionally stimulating locations; creating a short story with minimum of words; writing a poem based on the Japanese poetry of Haiku, writing an address to oneself in the future, continuing a story with a given beginning, etc.

The aim in the study is to analyze how work with fiction is organized in six textbooks for senior high school in Sweden after the school reform 2011. Research into Swedish teaching materials has been neglected in recent years and there is a knowledge gap about how the work with fictions is affected by the reform in 2011. In the study quantitative and qualitative methods are used and Bernstein’s theories relating to horizontal and vertical discourse are applied to the empirical material. The analysis shows that work with fiction in textbooks is marginalized, particularly work with fictions created by women. The study also shows that students attending vocational programs have access to a different knowledge than students attending university preparatory programs. This is remarkable, since the learning objectives in Svenska 1, curriculum for vocational and university preparatory programs, are the same. This means that central values of equal education are eliminated after the reform, and the knowledge gap between different groups of students likely is to increase.

The Aggression Replacement Training (ART) program is a comprehensive intervention for aggressive juvenile delinquents incorporating three components: Structured Learning, Anger Control Training and Moral Reasoning Training (Goldstein & Click, 1987). This paper investigates the efficacy of ART within a high school setting. Eighteen significantly aggressive students were selected using the Achenbach and Edelbrook (1986) aggression scale. Students (mean age 13 years and 9 months) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: Condition 1, the entire ART program; Condition 2, the Moral Reasoning component only; and Condition 3, a no treatment condition. The dependent measures were performance on: Behaviour Incident Reports, aggressive and coping behaviours, the Kendall-Wilcox Self-Control Scale, Situation Tests, and a Sociomoral Reflections Measure. Two-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used to analyse the data. Compared to the two control conditions students completing the ART program: showed a significant decrease in aggressive incidences; a significant increase in coping incidences; and acquired significantly more social skills. Students in Condition 1 improved on the Combined Kendall-Wilcox Scale for Self-Control and Impulsivity. No significant differences were noted on the Sociomoral Reflections measure. ART appears to be an effective intervention for aggressive youth within a high school setting.

The data collection techniques using observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data analysis techniques using mixed methods. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear regression. In contrast, the qualitative data were analyzed using Miler and Huberman's theory, which included four stages: reduction, display, triangulation, and conclusion. Main Findings: First, mild juvenile delinquency is still practiced by students. Secondly, character strengthening is done through an extracurricular program, orderly book socialization, cooperation with external parties. Third, the instructional leadership ability of principals is still low. Fourth, the magnitude of the influence of Instructional Leadership in changing students' characters obtained a percentage of 12%, while other factors influence 78 %; and the inhibiting factor for instructional leadership of school principals is the lack of collaboration between schools and parents. Applications of this study: The results of this study can provide significant benefits in the discipline of character education and educational psychology. The school leaders can use the findings in this study to tackle juvenile delinquency in junior high school. Novelty/Originality of this study: It turns out that to reduce and eliminate juvenile delinquency is not enough just with Instructional Leadership. The most significant factor that can help minimize adolescent familiarization is the existence of good cooperation between parents and teachers or the school.

Teaching writing to students of high need in an urban school is simultaneously pedagogical, curricular, and political. Students labeled “at-risk” for school failure often have lowered expectations placed upon them from without that impact how they feel within. Compounding this problem of perception is the real issue of heightened surveillance on these students, including the disturbing trend of involving the police when students break the rules of the school; in addition, their own history of juvenile incarceration often exacerbates their school failure. This article addresses these issues in an urban context, as well as provides insight into literacy teaching that assists students in the acquisition of knowledge, literacy, and expression.

This study aims to determine the relationship 1) digital literacy and delinquency, 2) digital literacy and peer conformity, 3) digital literacy and peer conformity, 4) digital literacy and peer conformity simultaneously with delinquency of young high school students in Keritang District Indragiri Hilir Riau Riau. Using a correlational quantitative approach. The study population included 1148 students from 3 senior high schools in Keritang Indragiri Hilir Riau, a sample of 297 people used the Taro Yamane formula with the Random Sampling Technique. The data collection technique uses a closed questionnaire with a Likert model that has passed the validity and reliability tests. Data analysis techniques include, normality and linearity prerequisite tests, hypothesis testing using bivariate and multivariate correlations. The research results show 1). There is a significant relationship between digital literacy (X1) and juvenile delinquency (Y) with a negative relationship, namely the higher the adolescent's digital literacy, the lower the adolescent's delinquency. 2). There is a very significant relationship between peer conformity (X2) and adolescent delinquency with a positive relationship (Y). So that when peer conformity increases, the delinquent behavior of the adolescent also increases. 3). There is a significant simultaneous relationship between digital literacy (X1) and peer conformity (X2) with adolescent disability (Y) in the form of a significant positive relationship, that is, even though adolescents have high digital literacy, simultaneously they also have high conformity with peers. Similarly, it will have a positive relationship with juvenile delinquency.TRANSLATE with x EnglishArabicHebrewPolishBulgarianHindiPortugueseCatalanHmong DawRomanianChinese SimplifiedHungarianRussianChinese TraditionalIndonesianSlovakCzechItalianSlovenianDanishJapaneseSpanishDutchKlingonSwedishEnglishKoreanThaiEstonianLatvianTurkishFinnishLithuanianUkrainianFrenchMalayUrduGermanMalteseVietnameseGreekNorwegianWelshHaitian CreolePersian // TRANSLATE with COPY THE URL BELOW Back EMBED THE SNIPPET BELOW IN YOUR SITE Enable collaborative features and customize widget: Bing Webmaster PortalBack// This page is in Swedish Translate to English AfrikaansAlbanianAmharicArabicArmenianAzerbaijaniBengaliBulgarianCatalanCroatianCzechDanishDutchEnglishEstonianFinnishFrenchGermanGreekGujaratiHaitian CreoleHebrewHindiHungarianIcelandicIndonesianItalianJapaneseKannadaKazakhKhmerKoreanKurdish (Kurmanji)LaoLatvianLithuanianMalagasyMalayMalayalamMalteseMaoriMarathiMyanmar (Burmese)NepaliNorwegianPashtoPersianPolishPortuguesePunjabiRomanianRussianSamoanSimplified ChineseSlovakSlovenianSpanishSwedishTamilTeluguThaiTraditional ChineseTurkishUkrainianUrduVietnameseWelsh Always translate Swedish to EnglishPRO Never translate Swedish Never translate ejournal.uin-suska.ac.id

Little is known about the perceptions of teachers of their students returning from the juvenile justice system, which can influence student relationships and student engagement, both of which are critical to reduce recidivism rates. This study utilized an online survey to examine the perceptions of a convenience sample of 283 school personnel (e.g., special educators, administrators) from across the country on available transition services, school climate, self-efficacy, barriers faced during reentry, and supportive strategies. Findings indicate transition services are implemented inconsistently; personnel believe they have the ability to positively influence youth, yet they have low expectations for youth after graduation. Findings suggest opportunities for professional development on holding high expectations for youth, services to prevent negative outcomes. Implications for future research call for examination of wraparound services and analysis of transition services utilized across different states and regions of the country.

Indiana, Oklahoma, and Washington each have programs designed to address college enrollment gaps by offering a promise of state-based college financial aid to low-income middle school students in exchange for making a pledge to do well in high school, be a good citizen, not be convicted of a felony, and apply for financial aid to college. Using a triple-difference specification, we estimate the effects of Washington’s College Bound Scholarship program on students’ high school grades, high school graduation, juvenile detention and rehabilitation, and incarceration in state prison during high school or early adulthood. We find insignificant and substantively small or negative effects on these outcomes. These results call into question the rationale for such early commitment programs.

Reading habits are an essential aspect for creating a functionally literate society and for its positioning at the global level. In this regard, the aim of this paper is to examine quantities and contents that high school students read, including compulsory reading and other books that do not belong to this corpus. We also tried to examine students? opinions about ways that could contribute to their motivation to read books, to consider their reading habits keeping in mind the family context and the use of library services, as well as to determine whether reading books is related to gender, academic achievement, the type of school that the students attend, the class and the education of their parents. Students (N=1378) from high schools and secondary vocational schools from several cities in Serbia participated in the research. A questionnaire was used, constructed for the purposes of this study. The results show that adolescents are reluctant to read reading materials contained in the curriculum. The majority of students read books outside of this corpus, and they most often read comics, science fiction, crime and romance novels. More than one fifth of students do not recognise any way that would motivate them to read books. Since there has been no visible improvement in this area in teaching practice over the last decade, it would be desirable to introduce and affirm optional subjects that would contribute to improving the reading habits of high school students (especially in secondary vocational schools).

Adolescence is a period of developmental transition between childhood and adulthood which generally begins at the age of 12 or 13 years and ends at the age of (late teens or early twenties). During this transition period, it is possible that a period of crisis will arise, which is characterized by a tendency for naughty or deviant behavior to emerge. One of the factors that influences juvenile delinquency is self-control. This research aims to describe the picture of student juvenile delinquency at school, describe student self-control and examine the relationship between self-control and juvenile delinquency at school. This research is a quantitative descriptive correlational type of research. The population of this research is students of SMP Negeri 1 Kubung, totaling 339 students enrolled in the 2023/2024 academic year. Sampling was determined using a purposive sampling technique with a sample size of 35 students. Data collection used a self-control questionnaire and a questionnaire on juvenile delinquency at school with a Likert scale model. The data was processed using percentage analysis techniques and to test the relationship between the two variables using the Pearson correlation product moment formula. The results of this research show that: (1) juvenile delinquency of students at SMP Negeri 1 Kubung is in the high category with a percentage of 53.94%, self-control of students at SMP Negeri 1 Kubung is in the low category with a percentage of 57.67%, (2) self-control students at SMP Negeri 1 Kubung are in the low category with a percentage of 57.67%, (3) there is a significant negative relationship between self-control and juvenile delinquency of -464 with a significance level of 0.005. A significant negative relationship means that the higher the student's self-control, the lower the student's delinquency. On the other hand, the lower the student's self-control, the higher the student's delinquency. The implications of the results of this research can be used as a guideline in providing guidance and counseling services in schools, especially in information services, group guidance services, group counseling services and individual counseling services in preventing juvenile delinquency at school.

As a unique literary genre, science fiction can serve as a motivating text to develop students’ critical analytical skills and to promote critical thinking about new technology and its societal controversies under proper guidance. In the field of English as Foreign Language (EFL) learning, using science fiction films in the classroom affords EFL learners new language-learning experiences. This paper explains how films, as a multimodal resource in EFL classes, can enrich students’ multiliteracies—specifically how the science fiction genre can develop students’ critical literacies under careful meaning-making curriculum design. A preliminary study, taking 30 students in a foreign language high school in China, is reported in this paper. Findings reveal that carefully selected science fiction films such as I am Legend and Blade Runner can serve as pivotal sources for developing EFL learners’ literacy under the multiliteracies pedagogy. Such films can also connect students with Western ideology to reinforce their identity as participants in globalization. This study further suggests that key points in successful design of the course in an EFL classroom include posing critical questions to promote critical thinking and actively analyzing multimodal texts to uncover underlying meanings in source material.

This study addressed the academic experiences, including the School to Prison Pipeline and the academic experience to provide information, justifying the importance of creating postsecondary academic opportunities for incarcerated juveniles. Then, the study analyzed interviews with recently released students of the program to give insight to correctional education experiences vis-à-vis artistic representations, in this case, short fiction. However, interventions for students with significant intellectual disability (ID) are lacking adapted materials to make instruction available in all major academic areas including social studies. This multiple baseline study examined the effects of adapted videos for improving factual comprehension of non-fiction clips by four high school students with significant ID. Video adaptations included picture/word-based closed captions and interactive video searching for answers. According to the visual analyses, students performed better with adapted and interactive video clips. Furthermore, social validity interviews revealed that all students enjoyed the adapted and interactive videos and found them beneficial. Limitations and directions for future research in the area of adapted and interactive video instruction are discussed.

This study aims to find out the forms of juvenile delinquency, the factors that cause juvenile delinquency and the ways or efforts to overcome juvenile delinquency at public senior high schools in Bantaeng regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study employed a qualitative study by applying the phenomenology approach. The data source consisted of 20 people, namely three headmasters, seven counseling guidance teachers, two student’s parents, and eight students. Data collection methods consisted of observation, interview, and documentation. Data analysis technique was carried out through three stages, namely: data reduction, data display, and concluding. The study results indicated that the forms of juvenile delinquency were in the forms of delinquency which cause physical casualties, i.e., fighting; which cause material casualties, i.e., smoking, blackmail, drinking liquor, and consuming drugs; and that were against the status, i.e., absent and truant in attending the class and school. The factors that cause juvenile delinquency were internal factors including lack of interest, lack of awareness, and the weak of self-control. External factors included the family environment, the school environment, and the community environment. The efforts to overcome juvenile delinquency were a preventive and curative attempt. Curative efforts include religious, family, and coaching approaches. The curative effort includes mediating the causes of juvenile delinquency, talking through parents, making statements, making resumes, giving opportunities to present religious speeches by the forms of delinquency made, providing sanctions for cleaning mosques, toilets, and standing in the field. Also, this study recommended allowing smoking made from cow dung and HVS papers for students who smoke.

This article uses U.S. survey data (N=15,847) to characterize the evolution of student interest in an astronomy career in the period between middle school and the beginning of college. We find that middle school students have a relatively high interest in astronomy, which sharply declines with every phase of their education. However, many of the students who leave astronomy - particularly male students - feed heavily into other STEM disciplines. Through statistical modeling, we find that students who spend extracurricular time observing stars, tinkering with mechanical or electrical devices, or reading/watching science or science fiction are significantly more likely than students who do not engage in these activities to hold an interest in pursuing an astronomy career at the end of high school. We also find that females who observe stars during extracurricular time show a greater improvement in their odds of pursuing astronomy than males do. Furthermore, we find that these outside-of-school time activities are better predictors of astronomy interest than commonly studied academic predictors. We discuss the implications of these findings on future extracurricular programming for students.
