A multiproxy study from Sweeton Pond, Ozark County, Missouri, USA, provides a high-resolution 1900-year-long history of vegetation and fire in the southern Missouri Ozarks, where the modern vegetation is oak-hickory ( Quercus-Carya) forest. Pollen and charcoal data are compared with dendroecological data to assess how climate and fire shaped local vegetation history. Land use, particularly by the Osage tribe of Native Americans, is assessed from historical and archaeological records. Three cultural periods are superimposed on the paleoenvironmental history: (1) The Pre-Osage period, ending ~1500 CE, was characterized by open oak-hickory forest and frequent low-severity fires, suggesting interannual climate variability as a driver of vegetation and fire occurrence. At ~1360 CE, mesic tree species began to expand, while fire frequency remained low. (2) The Osage period (~1500–1820 CE) was characterized by the continued expansion of mesic, fire-sensitive species, especially elm ( Ulmus), in conjunction with cool, effectively wet conditions in the southern Missouri Ozarks. Despite climate conditions less favorable for fire, Osage expansion in the region was accompanied by increased fire and fire-dependent shortleaf pine ( Pinus echinata). The expansion of both fire-sensitive and fire-dependent taxa coincident with Osage occupation suggests that anthropogenic fire and land use was local in nature and increased landscape heterogeneity prior to Euro-American settlement. (3) The Euro-American period (since ~1820 CE) was characterized by increased disturbance pollen types (e.g. Ambrosia-type) at the expense of shortleaf pine pollen, resulting from increased settlement size and extensive agricultural and logging activities. During this period, forest clearance led to fuel fragmentation, reducing fire activity; after 1920 CE, fire was actively suppressed.

Multiple annual cankers were observed on the upper main stems of bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis) exhibiting top dieback in Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin during a 2006 to 2008 survey of declining hickory. The top-killed trees had normal-sized, green leaves below and the cankers were oval, sunken, and bounded by heavy callus that seemed to arrest further canker expansion. Fusarium solani was consistently isolated from the margins of inner bark lesions or discolored sapwood of the cankers. When cultured on potato dextrose agar, the isolates grew rapidly with abundant aerial mycelium. On carnation leaf agar, thick-walled macroconidia with 4 to 5 septa were produced in cream, blue-green, or blue sporodochia. Macroconidia were generally cylindrical with a blunt or rounded apical cell and a rounded or foot-shaped basal cell. Microconidia were oval to kidney shaped with 0 to 1 septa and were produced in false heads on elongate monophialides. Chlamydospores were formed singly or in pairs. These morphological characteristics are consistent with descriptions of F. solani (2). The identities of 42 representative isolates were confirmed by sequencing the translation elongation factor (tef) 1-α gene. BLAST analysis of the sequences from each isolate against the GenBank and FUSARIUM-ID database found 98 to 100% similarities to F. solani isolates (GenBank Accession Nos. DQ246841, DQ247025, DQ247282, and DQ247436 and FUSARIUM-ID isolate FD01041). Two haplotypes (BB and BC) were distinguished based on the tef 1-α gene sequences that differed by 10 bp. Pathogenicity tests were conducted with two isolates of each haplotype on asymptomatic C. cordiformis (12 to 21 cm in diameter) in forest stands. In May 2009 in Wabasha County, MN, 0.1-ml spore suspensions (1 × 104 macroconidia/ml) or sterile water was placed in one of three holes (0.6 cm in diameter) drilled to the cambium of 12 trees. The holes were sealed with moist cotton and moldable putty. A duplicate trial, but with BB and BC isolates from Wisconsin, was initiated in Chippewa County, WI in June 2009. The extent of inner bark necrosis was assessed 13 months after inoculation in both sites. Inoculations with F. solani in Minnesota resulted in inner bark lesions with average lengths of 20 and 30 mm for the BB and BC haplotypes, respectively. In Wisconsin, BB and BC haplotypes caused inner bark lesions with average lengths of 34 and 38 mm, respectively. While sunken or open cankers were found for all the BC isolate inoculations, relatively small and callus-bounded cankers were found for BB isolate inoculations. All control wounds were callus-closed with average wound lengths of 12 and 23 mm in Minnesota and Wisconsin, respectively. The same haplotype of F. solani used for inoculation was recovered from each canker as confirmed by analysis of tef 1-α gene sequences. F. solani was not obtained from control wounds. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a canker caused by F. solani on bitternut hickory (1). The same fungus has been previously reported to cause cankers on stems of other hardwood tree genera in the eastern United States and Canada. We hypothesize that numerous main-stem cankers caused by F. solani lead to top dieback of bitternut hickory. References: (1) D. F. Farr et al. Fungi on Plants and Plant Products in the United States. Introduction. The study of the agrarian movement on the eve of the establishment of Soviet power in the regions of Russia is important in the light of determining the role of the peasantry in the process of coming into power of the Bolsheviks. It quite clearly demonstrates the polarization of social forces in the Russian village on the eve of the decisive events of the great Russian revolution in 1917, Therefore, the growth of the agrarian movement in the country during the period under review evidence of the crisis caused by the absence of a decision by the authorities of the agrarian question that occupies a prominent place in Russian social and political consciousness of the early twentieth century. Materials and Methods. The study uses the materials of the Central state archive of the Republic of Mordovia, as well as scientific literature. The main method of research used in the work is historical-genetic. A micro-historical approach is also used for a more detailed insight into the subject of the study. Results. The article deals with the direction of agricultural movement in the Saransk district through the prism of confrontation between the rich and poor parts of the village. It notes the main purpose of the agrarian-peasant movement: the landlords, the kulaks, the farmers. Forms of the agrarian movement directed against “the high society” of village are considered, and also the property damage caused to owners is stated. The study notes that the peasantry dissatisfied with the protracted solution of the agricultural issue by the Provisional government has moved to radical methods of “black redistribution”. The wealthy part of the village in these conditions was without protection from the district authorities which by the autumn in 1917 did not have any power or authority among the local population, which predetermined the success of peasant actions against “the high society”. Discussion and Conclusion. As a result of the conducted research the circle of victims in the period of “peasant revolt” in autumn 1917 in the territory of Saransk district of Penza province is revealed. Forms of influence in relation to each category of rural owners are defined. Also it notes the hopelessness of the situation of “the high society” of village against the background of the crisis of local authorities on the eve of the establishment of Soviet power.

The study of the historical experience of organizing the activities of the domestic penitentiary system in general, and the experience of the Society for the Care of Prisons, in particular, has not only cognitive value, but also allows us to isolate and adapt the positive experience of using the potential of public-charitable structures in the implementation of modern penal policy. The article consciously focused on the analysis of the activities of the district branches of the Trusteeship Society, as the main and most numerous link of the socio-philanthropic penitentiary movement in the Russian Empire. Based on the materials of the funds of the State Historical Archive of the Chuvash Republic and the National Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan, and normative sources, the article attempts to analyze the activities of the county branches of the Society for the Care of Prisons to provide food for the prisoners of the county prison castles.

Following South Sudanese independence in 2011, land reform became a major aspect of state building, partly to address historical injustices and partly to avoid future conflicts around land. In the process, land became a trigger for conflicts, sometimes between communities with no histories of “ethnic conflict.” Drawing on cases in two rural areas in Yei River County in South Sudan, this paper shows that contradictions in the existing legal frameworks on land are mainly to blame for those conflicts. These contradictions are influenced, in turn, by the largely top-down approach to state building, which has tended to neglect changes in society and regarding land resulting from colonialism and civil wars.

Recent discoveries of oil and gas in eastern Africa often happen in marginalized and underdeveloped areas, such as Turkana, Kenya, an arid county inhabited predominantly by pastoralists. As a result of low political participation and weak governance frameworks for the emerging hydrocarbon industry, the pastoralists face displacement from land, exposure to environmental hazards, and exclusion from decision-making and benefit-sharing arrangements. Their interests are further sidelined by elite capture and a strong national development agenda supported by international actors. Community members have aired their grievances against both the investor and the state through protests, disrupting company operations. This work argues that two of the pillars of environmental justice, participation and recognition, are lacking in the county and that authentic participation should be pursued to avoid destruction of community capabilities and conflict. Because there is historical opposition to the state and its allies, the county government should consider working closely with trusted providers in the county, namely, faith-based organizations and their civil society counterparts, to bring about more authentic participation, community empowerment, and ultimately better governance for just distribution of benefits and harms.

AbstractNative American communities underwent significant upheaval, ethnic blending, and restructuring in the Spanish colonial period. One archaeological example is the appearance of a seven-room stone and adobe structure in western Kansas, known as the Scott County Pueblo (14SC1). Previous researchers used Spanish documents to attribute the site to Puebloan refugees from Taos or Picuris in the mid- to late 1600s. Here we examine the Smithsonian and Kansas Historical Society ceramic collections for evidence of Puebloan women at the site. We find a high proportion of bowls at 14SC1, suggesting the maintenance of Puebloan food-preparation and-serving patterns, as well as some vessels apparently made by Puebloan potters in western Kansas. We cannot falsify our null hypothesis that the Scott County Pueblo included people from one or more northern Rio Grande pueblos during the mid-1600s, or A.D. 1696–1706, or both.

The rapidly urbanizing global south has witnessed drastic changes in rural transformation in which industrial dynamics have played a fundamental role. However, research on rural industrial geography and its influencing factors is limited compared with its urban counterpart. The spatial pattern of rural industry in an ordinary county in China—Xintai—is examined by adopting a multi-level approach. The underlying factors are then explored by situating it into a hybrid historical and geographical process of economy, institution, and society. Results show that: (1) The process of rural industrialization is hierarchically and spatially uneven across the county with the first- and second-tier industrial villages clustering around the central city and along two main roads exhibiting a general pattern of ‘one core and two bands‘. (2) Despite the overall pattern of concentration, rural industry exhibits a polycentric and dispersed distribution at the county and township levels. (3) The resources have continued to play a pivotal role in shaping the current industrial geography of this formerly resource-dependent county, followed by market accessibility, role of government, social capital, and the within-township industrial distribution. This research demonstrates the importance of the multi-level perspective in recognizing and understanding rural industrial geography and reveals its differences in urban and rural areas.

ANNOTATION. The article dwells on the hitherto unnoticed manuscript legacy of the 19th century genealogy lover, landlord of Dysna county Adomas Krescencijus Gabrielius Lopacinskis (Adam Krescenty Gabriel Łopaciński, 1826 – after 1893), stored in the Society of Friends of Science Fund at the Lithuanian State Historical Archives. The manuscript legacy includes personal and family documents as well as several letters. Its most valuable part is the impressive amount of materials dedicated to the genealogy of the GDL noble families. A. Lopacinskis’ written legacy makes it possible to speak about a workshop on historical memory and genealogy which was in operation in the nobleman’s house and nurtured the culture of writing down the family’s history. The article also offers a reconstruction of A. Lopacinskis’ biography with a view to explaining how the genealogy workshop looked like, what it consisted of, who and how used the materials contained therein, and how the nobleman of the second half of the 19th century perceived the memorization of the highest class of the society. Implementing the rural revitalization strategy is an important decision made by the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and it is also an important historical task to build a well-off society and a socialist modern country in an all-round way. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that no one should be left behind in building a well-off society in an all-round way, and no one should be left behind on the road to common prosperity. It can be seen that building a new countryside and promoting rural revitalization and industrial development in an orderly manner is a major historical issue that needs to be solved urgently before us. Erhe Village, a poverty-stricken county deep in the country, conforms to the development requirements of the times, emancipates the mind, is determined to forge ahead, stands out brilliantly in the tough battle against poverty, insists on leading rural revitalization with party building, bravely undertakes the mission to start a new bureau, marches forward steadily, and starts a new journey of building socialist modernization in an all-round way.

According to the information-axiological approach of Yu.A. Vedenin and M.E. Kuleshova, spiritual and intellectual values transmitted in the form of information from generation to generation play a significant role in the formation of the cultural landscape. The comprehensive study and actualization of cultural heritage as part of the cultural landscape reveals the role of traditional culture values in the modern socio-cultural situation. There is a close connection between the cultural landscape and local self-awareness through recognizable and meaningful images, concepts and symbols. Associative meanings and meanings of the cultural landscape of the territory affect the socio-cultural potential of the local society, the identification of its place in the external environment. At the turn of the 19–20th centuries the inhabitants of the Staritsky region were actively engaged in research in the field of local history, archiving, sought to preserve the local cultural heritage in collective practices, collecting, in publications in historical periodicals. Historical and cultural landscape served as inspiration for research of I.P. Krylov, A.N. Vershinsky, S.I. Pokrovsky, A.D. Ushakov. The clergy played a huge role in preserving regional culture. The clergy of the Staritsky Upper Volga region were members of the Tver Scientific Archival Commission, subscribers of historical journals, collectors of local folklore and archivists. The old manors, being at a distance from the provincial center, and possessing a powerful cultural and historical potential, had a great influence on the culture of the county as a whole, their artistic values served as the core of the collection of the county museum.

Horizontal inequalities, such as political exclusion, are likely to motivate ethnic group leaders to instigate conflicts. Ethnic nationalism becomes a key motivation for ethnic groups to mobilise based on their shared primordial identities. Uasin Gishu County has been the epicentre of ethnic conflicts due to horizontal inequalities perpetuated by political decisions that have proved impactful on ethnic relations in the county. Past conflicts in the county have been attributed to land disputes, political competition, and access to economic resources. This study thus puts into perspective how these factors associated with horizontal inequalities have exacerbated conflicts in the county. The study was anchored on the relative deprivation theory. This study adopted descriptive research design and historical research design. The study targeted the following categories of study population in Uasin Gishu County: Household heads, County Commissioner, County Secretary, Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Officials, local administration (Chiefs), religious leaders, civil society organisations, Members of County Assembly (MCAs), security personnel (senior police officers), and opinion leaders. Hence, the total number of household heads is 60,318. The researcher, therefore, determined the sample size for the nine wards using Fisher’s formula which states that for a target population greater than 10,000, the desired sample size can be determined using Fisher’s formula for sample size determination. Primary data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and FGDs. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS version 25 software to obtain descriptive statistics, particularly frequencies and percentages. Additionally, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient Analysis was used to generate 2-tail bivariate Pearson’s correlation tables from the SPSS data set. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic techniques to support quantitative data. Quantitative data was presented using a table; qualitative data was presented in the form of narrative reports and verbatim quotations. Based on the findings, the study concludes that political horizontal inequalities that manifest through political exclusion, patrimonialism, and discrimination occasioned by ethnic patronage have been a major factor in intractable ethnic conflicts in the county. The study recommends transparency and inclusivity in political processes to reduce the manipulation of ethnic identities for political gains.

Not-for-profit organizations often rely heavily on volunteers to help them achieve their goals on very limited budgets. Often, these organizations are especially in need of volunteers with specific skills not possessed by the average volunteer. Such is the case with the County Historical Society (The Society), which is in need of help with certain aspects of its museum gift shop operations. Most of the volunteers and staff of the organization are avid history buffs, but know little about running a business and even less about accounting and systems related processes. Therefore, the organization has approached your professor to ask for your assistance. The Society would like to seek the benefit of your knowledge of accounting systems and internal controls to help it improve operations and financial reporting for the gift shop. A previous group of students has documented the operations in narrative form as part of a class project. The Society would now like specific recommendations for ways to improve internal controls. It would also like to begin to upgrade its systems for inventory tracking, starting with its records for consignment inventory.

Maramureș County, located in the north-western part of Romania, has always represented one of the oldest religious centres of the ancient province of Transylvania. The first part of the present essay will illustrate the most relevant moments in the history of the Christian community of Orthodox Ukrainian people, who lived within the historical region of Maramureș, and also the structure and the evolution of the local Ukrainian Church. The second part will present and demonstrate the key role played by the Orthodox faith and beliefs in establishing mutual relations of friendship and collaboration between the smaller Ukrainian community and the larger Romanian population, within the boundaries of Maramureș County. These relations of friendship and mutual understanding must endure in order to fight against the newly emerging Antichristian ideology that has shaken the moral and Christian foundations of our society. By sharing the same faith and the same religious beliefs, members of the Ukrainian community have managed to preserve their customs and traditions, their traditional dress codes, music and dance and kept alive their spiritual heritage.

Abstract In October 2013, Xí Jìnpíng presented not only an ambitious infrastructure project but a strategic initiative that promoted connections in many regards: the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). One intended strategic value of this initiative is the improvement of relations between China and its neigh-bours as well as the improvement of dialogue among different civilizations. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the shared historical cultural heritage of the involved ethnic groups, while the idea of a ‘harmonious society’ is promoted at the same time. The aim of this article is to shed light on how China expands its soft power through civilizational connections along the Sino-Mongolian-Russian Economic Corridor by referring to the Silk Road Academic Belt. This article is based on ethnographic field research in Hénán Mongol Autonomous County in the Sino-Tibetan borderlands of Qīnghǎi Province during an international conference titled “Historical and Cultural Links between Mongolia and Tibet,” held in July 2017.1

Also, data collected from throughout the Western Lake Erie region since 1984 has necessitated several revisions in the 1984 settlement-subsistence model proposed for the Late Woodland Western Basin Tradition populations, ca. 1000–1300 A.D. (Stothers, Graves, and Redmond, 1984). Key changes involve the relative sizes of functionally different site types that form component parts of a larger settlement system, a lack of formal village life, and a new perspective on seasonal patterns of population coalescence and dispersal.

In this study we are dealing with a personal correspondence that happened during the first half of the 17th century. We are analyzing the correspondence of the representatives of the Drugeth family (János Drugeth and his wife Anna Jakusith) by paying particular attention to the analysis of the people, events and background-information appearing in these letters. The detailed examination of the contents of the given letters shows that if we are familiar with the contemporary events and personal relations and have access to some necessary additional sources, we can make appropriate conclusions even from relatively sparse information. The archives of the Homonnai Drugeth family could not be saved as a complex document through different historical hardships. Its smaller parts can be found in the archives of the ducal branch of Esterházi family at the Presov Archives. Thanks to their personal relationship with Ádám Batthyány several letters of János Drugeth and Anna Jakusith survived in the Batthyány archives. The family archives of the different correspondences serve as particularly important sources and documents of the given ages since they contain social historical, economic and political information in addition to local/personal data. Without them no historian could write the history of a family or a landlord and of a county. In his doctoral thesis on the actual period, historian Zoltán Borbély writes the following words: „With families having better resources such as the Batthyány-, the Nádasdy- or the Esterházi families there are researches dealing with a deeper focus on court, estate, art and cultural history many times within the framework of an interdisciplinary research group. In addition to the processing of a certain family history a complex examination of the noble society of the Western Transdanubian region has also begun. Within this examination in parallel with the study of the stratification of the noble society, some inspiring results were obtained in connection with the regional role of a noble family, their role in the administrative system of the county and millitary affairs, their family relations and last but not least, about their lands. One of the aims of this study is to show the event and family history aspects related to their textual parts via two personal letters and to illustrate the style of the contemporary aristocratic correspondence. In our view the study has once again contributed to learn about a small piece of the Drugeth family’s history and to clarify some historical «rumors».

Preservation of the load-bearing historical structures represents a common research topic nowadays, as it stands a provocative and difficult task. At the same time, sustainability represents a concept of high interest in the light of recent climate change events, a concept that has become a responsibility in the past years. Safeguarding of the historical buildings with heritage value is an obligation of society to be able to pass on to future generations the historical cultural value of the buildings and the traditional construction techniques on which they were built. Nowadays, many historical buildings are consolidated with modern reversible materials and technologies, without attempting a sustainable consolidation with local traditional materials using the original building techniques and local building materials, which have already proved their effectiveness in the past. This article presents the sustainable consolidation methods proposed to consolidate the historic building of the Villa Abbatis guesthouse in the village of Apos, Sibiu County, Romania. The proposed consolidation techniques use bricks that are manufactured according to traditional method in a recently built brickworks and reuse existing building materials in the building and from abandoned buildings after the departure of ethnic Germans from Romania until 1990. The aim of this paper is to highlight the value of the traditional materials and technologies, that can bring in the retrofitting process not only the assurance of the bearing capacity, but also the preservation of the authenticity and sustainability of the entire process, in a holistic approach.

The social policy regarding motherhood and infancy, including the system of social protection of orphans in the Tambov Governorate in the first decade of Soviet government (1918–1928) was specially and comprehensively studied in the context of state, public and private support of the agrarian society. The focus was on the reconstruction of the conformity of the program of maternity and childhood protection proclaimed by the Soviet government at the regional level. On the basis of a wide range of primary materials (archival sources, periodicals, published materials) various little-known aspects of a scientific problem are representatively investigated. We summarize the successful and unsuccessful experience of the formation of a welfare state system and public initiatives of the medical community and women’s departments in provincial Russia, which often had significant differences from metropolitan events and management decisions. A staged organization has been identified of creating subdivisions of motherhood and infancy, the actual care of orphans at the regional and county level, which makes it possible to assess the op-portunities and needs of social protection and the care of children in urban and rural society during the chronological period. We clarify the transformation of social institutions in relation to the maternity and childhood, both at the level of the governorate and at the county level. The situation of abandoned children and the social policy of transferring these children to private education are specifically considered, the financial problems associated with the transfer of orphans to childless peasant families are assessed. The main trends of social care for the “children of misfortune”, the motives for helping and supporting them by the local community, collectives of enterprises and state institutions of the period under review are revealed. Conclusions are made about the results and historical regional experience and traditions, peculiarities of supporting motherhood and childhood at the level of the province and counties, which made it possible to successfully reconstruct this social protection system of the new Soviet Russia. Attention is drawn to the importance of taking into account regional specifics and concrete historical manifestations of the social state in the era of social cataclysms (Revolution, Civil War, Antonovschina, New Economic Policy), as well as assessing social and political, social and cultural tendencies of the Soviet government.

We consider the formation and development features of the nurseries as a special social institution in the Tambov Governorate in the early of 20th century. The governorate and county levels of declared scientific problem consideration allows to conduct the successful reconstruction of the formation and activities of infant nurseries for foundlings, orphans in both urban and rural areas, which reflected the practice of social care and charity of “trouble children”. We reveal the implementation features of county initiatives for the social protection of foundlings and orphans, as well as the levels and forms of such support for such categories of Russian society by local authorities. We clarify the possibilities of organizing nurseries for foundlings at the governorate and county hospitals and maternity wards. We note the role of particular medical workers in the development of civic initiatives and public service in the rescue of foundlings. We identify the historiographic traditions of both domestic and foreign historians in the study of the orphans charity in the context of the social work organization and the social institutions development, including nurseries. Based on the analysis of a wide range of historical sources, it was possible to identify the most successful and effective practices of organizing nurseries both in the peaceful years and in the periods of Russian-Japanese War of 1904–1905 and World War I 1914–1918, which allowed us to consider various little-studied aspects of the stated scientific problem. We reveal the regional features of the social protection system for orphans through the prism of nursery care. We clarify the position and role of the Orthodox Church on the organization of orphan charity in monasteries during the war years of 1914–1918. We reveal the main posing issues of the prospects for studying a wide range of problems in the history of orphanhood in the Tambov Governorate in the early 20th century. Abstract Economic growth, productivity and national well-being over time have been promoted through various innovation strategies. Education aims to shape the human personality according to its particularities but also according to the social dynamics, the mobility of teachers through the dynamic integration of man in society. Education differs from one historical stage to another. With the advancement of technology, students have the opportunity to take online courses, regardless of where they are, age, physical limitations or personal schedule. Technology can open up new opportunities for learning and assessment. With the help of the regression analysis applied based on the indicators provided by the National Institute of Statistics: the number of students, computers, laboratories and workshops in each county in Romania (2010-2017) tested the influence of technology on the number of students enrolled in schools. The main conclusion of the study emphasizes that a higher number of children enrolled in school in a county is correlated with the degree of technology. Thus, the number of new devices will increase to ensure the possibility for both teachers and students to evolve. On the other hand, the fact that some areas of the country are less developed and lack funding, is also reflected in the number of children enrolled as well as in the number of computers available.

Much of the literature on the familistic system of landholding in Ireland has suffered both from a western small-farming bias and a lack of 3 historical perspective. This paper seeks to reconstruct the patterns and processes by which the landholding system of one Co. Tipperary parish — located within a more complex ecological zone and with a more diversified social structure — has been reproduced and transformed over the past two centuries. The study is situated in the context of the general processes of Irish agricultural development since the seventeenth century which has seen increasing levels of commercialisation and significant shifts in both the size of holdings and in patterns of commodity production. Given the complex ecological, economic, class, kinship and urban-rural relationships involved, an attempt is made to examine the dialectic between the more general processes of economic and social change and the particular adaptive strategies utilised by different social groups in the parish to survive in a varied and uncertain environment. Allowing for the highly uneven distribution of landed resources amongst different groups in the parish, it is argued that kinship-based behaviour was one of the critical adaptive strategies which eventually enabled the medium-size farm group in particular to capture a dominant position in this rural society.

Purpose: The purpose of this treatise is to justify the existence of patriarchy without masculinity because of the existence of patriarchal shell as evidenced in the male failure to meet the societal expectation of a functioning masculinity. This study is premised in the pre-colonial belief that in patriarchal society men made far-reaching decisions, they were the breadwinners and wielded exclusive authority and power. Methodology: The study used historical research design of Gottschalk Louis to collect, verifies, and synthesizes evidence from the past to establish facts that defended the existence of patriarchy without masculinity in Homa Bay. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used to identify the individuals and gender groups informants during the primary data collection. Primary data was also gathered from the National Archives to triangulate oral and secondary data. Secondary data were collected from, thesis, journal articles, books, and other publications from the internet, university, and other libraries. Findings: The data collected is given thematic content analysis based on study question. Primary and secondary data sources were corroborated to attain the validity and reliability of findings. The publication utilizes patriarchal theory of Robert Filmer which highlights the role of culture on gender performance roles and explains the role of patriarchal ideology in elevating men and making woman to depend on them for survival. In this study masculinity is viewed as a quality or set of habitual performed roles which were stereotypically connected with male gender as opposed to inherent in male. Contrary to the above, this study established that men still claim to have socio-economic and political entitlement in Homa Bay but the level of degeneration and reduction on the same is below expectation. Such degeneration makes patriarchy a shadow of its original reality. This premised in the study findings that there exists a widening masculine gap between the pre and postcolonial men of Homa Bay. The evidence in Homa Bay shows that most men fail to meet the societal expectation in their performances but grapple with vulnerability as they helplessly stare at the systematic loss of pre-colonial socio-economic and political patriarchal authority. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice The existence indicators of the decline of patriarchal dominance in Homa Bay such as long-life expectancy among women, high birth rate among baby girls and the socioeconomic and political degeneration, make patriarchal; theory to be rethought. This paper shows that in the pre-colonial society, there was a concept of valorized hegemonic masculinity which men strived to emulate that consequently established patriarchy. Therefore, the policy makers, governments and the non-governmental organizations should reorganize their strategies to save masculinity from extinction for the purpose of gender egalitarian societies.
