Resumo:
From the time I was a graduate student in folklore at the University of Pennsylvania I have been interested in the ways that folklore studies and the health professions can be productively brought together, and I have always considered this to be a primary example of "applied folklore." My definition of applied folklore is simply the application of concepts, methods and materials from academic folklore studies to the solution of practical problems. In other words, I see applied folklore standing in the same relation to basic folklore research as engineering does to the basic natural sciences. Such an application of academic folklore knowledge to practical problems provides an excellent setting for the empirical testing to folklore hypotheses and generates by necessity a richly inter-disciplinary approach. Applied folklore, therefore, should be as productive for the academic folklore enterprise as vice versa, and this reciprocal advantage is best realized by folklorists with both basic and applied training and interests.

Resumo:
Purpose University of Utah has created various partnerships to improve health literacy and health outcomes among patient populations, employees and community members. Health sciences librarians have been key members of these partnerships. This paper aims to describe and share several of these partnerships, including training programs, research efforts and advocacy initiatives, to encourage others to engage in similar activities. Design/methodology/approach Case studies include outreach projects and partnerships to foster health literacy and promote healthy living such as: highly visible information resource provision and associated outreach for patients and families; community health fairs; research on providing point-of-need information for vulnerable community populations; health literacy awareness and resources for professionals; health literacy education for interprofessional students; and a competition for interprofessional students to create health videos to address a variety of topics in multiple languages. Findings Partnerships and outreach efforts lead to improved awareness by institutional personnel of the importance of health literacy. Research on using health literacy to empower patients and increase patient satisfaction can demonstrate how to lower institutional costs and improve guideline compliance, as well out health outcomes. Originality/value Librarians’ instructional skills create personal health educational content for patients and professionals; engaging colleagues to address health literacy lowers health care costs, institutional costs and increases patient compliance and satisfaction.

Resumo:
Black Feminist Health Science Studies (BFHSS) is a critical intervention into a number of intersecting arenas of scholarship and activism, including feminist health studies, contemporary medical curriculum reform conversations, disability studies, environmental justice, and feminist technoscience studies (Bailey, 2016). We argue towards a theory of BFHSS that builds on social justice science, which has as its focus the health and well-being of marginalized groups. We would like to move towards a social justice science that understands the health and well-being of people to be its central purpose. This formulation of BFHSS provides evidence of the co-constitutive nature of medical science and popular perception, underscoring the need to engage them simultaneously. Health is both a desired state of being and a social construct necessary of interrogation because of the ways that race, gender, able bodiedness, and other aspects of cultural production profoundly shape our notions of what is healthy (Metzl & Kirkland, 2010).

Resumo:
The aim of this study was to analyze the methods used for validation studies in nursing research considering the clinical investigation as phenomenon. We carried out literature at BIREME, CINAHL, PUBMED which contain the terms 'validation studies', 'nursing' and 'clinical' and 21 articles were included in the review. The majority of the studies were conducted in 2008; in North America (USA) and European Community (62%) in the area of adult health. Most of the phenomena investigated were related to nursing care involving physical and emotional aspects. The content validity has been cited in 71.4% of the articles, criterion validity in 28.5% and construct validity in 23.8%. The reliability by means of Cronbach's alpha was used in the majority of the studies. It was found a knowledge gap concerning the validation estudies in the area of public health, child health and the social phenomena related to nursing care.
