Abstract A new method for system stability analysis, the weight functions method, is applied to estimate the longitudinal and lateral stability of a Hawker 800XP aircraft. This paper assesses the application of the weight functions method to a real aircraft and a method validation with an eigenvalues stability analysis of the linear small-perturbation equations. The method consists of finding the weight functions that are equal to the number of differential equations required for system modelling. The aircraft’s stability is determined from the sign of the total weight function – the sign should be negative for a stable model. Aerodynamic coefficients and stability derivatives of the mid-size twin-engine corporate aircraft Hawker 800XP are obtained using the in-house FDerivatives code, recently developed at our laboratory of applied research in active controls, avionics and aeroservoelasticity LARCASE. The results are validated with the flight test data supplied by CAE Inc. for all considered flight cases. This aircraft model was chosen because it was part of a research project for FDerivatives code and continued with weight function method for stability analysis in order to develop a design tool, based only on the aircraft geometrical parameters for subsonic regime. The following flight cases are considered: Mach numbers = 0·4 and 0·5, altitudes = 3,000m, 5,000m, 8,000m and 10,000m, and angles-of-attack α = –5° to 20°.

Abstract The new FDerivatives code was conceived and developed for calculating static and dynamic stability derivatives of an aircraft in the subsonic regime, based on its geometrical data. The code is robust and it uses geometries and flight conditions to calculate the aircraft’s stability derivatives. FDerivatives contains new algorithms and methods that have been added to DATCOM’s classical method, presented in a USAF Stability and Control DATCOM reference. The new code was written using MATLAB and has a complex structure which contains a graphical interface to facilitate the work of potential users. Results obtained with the new code were evaluated and validated with flight test data provided by CAE Inc. for the Hawker 800XP business aircraft.

n a ‘70s meeting of the Socialist Republic of Romania’s (RSR) Defense Council, Nicolae Ceausescu decided to have Romanians build a short-courier aircraft capable of ensuring passenger traffic, domestic and foreign, over short distances. Based on these indications, a contact was designed and several offers were obtained for the joint construction of such an aircraft: the British company "BAC" for an aircraft to be designed and developed at the request of the Romanian side, the British company "Hawker Siddeley, for the HS 748 aircraft, already manufactured in a military version, subject to obtaining the approval of the English government, the French company “SNIAS”, for the Nord-262-Fragatte aircraft which did not meet the Romanian requirements and, finally, from the West German company VFW Fokker, initially for the F. 98 aircraft, manufactured in the Netherlands, and then for the VFW 614 aircraft, both of which were introduced in Bucharest in September 1972 and May 1973, respectively. In the following study, the evolution of the negotiations with the West German side and the causes of the final failure in taking over the VFW-614 model for Romanian domestic production are presented and analyzed

The concept of SC-17M aircraft design was initiated to address the shortfalls on the DO-228 and Hawker Beechcraft King Air 350i aircraft. Until recently by using a standard specification, an SC-17M landing gear design has been carried out. Detailed study of sub-part C of the certification standard aided the application and determination of the necessary loads on the landing gear. The comprehensive design employed 300M steel as the best structural material to be used in the fabrication of the landing gear. The maximum bending moment in the shock absorber and wheel axle were calculated and validated with the use of Strand7 software in the model stress analysis. The reserve of strength calculated shows that the landing gear was able to withstand the applied loads without experiencing any failure.

The permanent urgency of aircraft design during the author’s career at Hawker Aircraft, a.k.a. British Aerospace Kingston, inhibited publication of his advances of theory. So he collected those on propulsion and presented them to the Royal Aeronautical Society in a lecture “Some Unpublished Contributions to Propulsion Theory” on 11 March 1992. The meeting proposed that the material should be published in full, and F. W. Armstrong helpfully suggested that the best way for future reference would be to divide the material into Technical Notes on related topics, each capable of standing alone. These have been reworked to stand separately, as follows:1)Fuel consumption formulae and the general range equation2)The Stream Force Theorem and applications to propulsion3)Non-isentropic duct flow and the general wake traverse4)Propulsion streamtubes in supersonic flow and the first supercritical intake cowl5)Rotary jet thrust augmenters(a)fallacy of Foa’s theory and correction(b)the jet fan augmenter.

Natural and man-made disasters are a justified concern causing life-threats damages, affects existing budgets or disrupts national economic and social development plans. In this paper, a digital terrain model (DTM) and a geographic information system (GIS) are used to identify areas with a high risk of avalanches in the Râmeț mountain area of Alba County. Avalanches are the result of a complex interaction between terrain, weather conditions and snow cover characteristics. The most important factor among those listed is the terrain, being the only constant parameter over time. Therefore, the present study focused in particular on the determination of topographic parameters and the realization of a digital terrain model with a resolution of 0.5 m, which allows the small-scale identification of slope angle variations, which are of great interest for avalanche study. This digital terrain model was generated after processing LiDAR data obtained from a scanning campaign for the analyzed area with the Riegl LMS Q680i LiDAR system, located aboard the Hawker Beechcraft King Air C90 GTx aircraft from INCAS. The result of the analysis consisted in mapping the risk of avalanches in the Râmeț mountain area in Alba County.

As the marine sextant is only useful to low-flying aircraft because of its reliance on the sea horizon (see Section 1), many earlier pioneers descended almost to sea level to take their sights; but as Alcock and Brown were the first to discover, it is often necessary to climb above the cloud in order to see the sky. Some pioneers used the horizon of stratocumulus cloud below, among them K. M. Grieve who, with Hawker, would have been the first across the Atlantic if radiator trouble had not made them the first survivors of a mid-Atlantic aeroplane ditching. As Grieve was so happy with his cloud horizon, disbelief must be suspended. Indeed, what has been claimed to be ‘the first real aeronautical sextant’, designed in 1919 by the same ingenious Capt T. Y. Baker RN who invented the Baker Navigating Machine (see Section 4 5), used a reflecting prism as an index mirror and two horizon prisms giving a view of both the back and front horizons. Provided both cloud horizons were equally depressed below the true horizontal plane, the instrument gave the true altitude of the body observed.

BACKGROUND: Increased frequencies of physiological episodes have been a significant concern for Naval Aviation for the last several years. These include several aircraft platforms, but no previously documented E-2D Hawkeye events. This report documents an episode in an E-2D, with multiple aircrew affected at the same time.CASE REPORT: While deployed aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier, five E-2D Hawkeyes aircrew were simultaneously exposed to the same over-pressurization during a routine sortie. Out of the five aircrew, four immediately reported hypoxic-like neurocognitive symptoms of mental slowing, difficulty concentrating, and headache. They were evaluated and treated using standard protocol according to the Physiologic Event Clinical Practice Guidelines set by the Naval Safety Center. All aircrew were treated with 100% ground level oxygen with resolution of symptoms.DISCUSSION: Although rare, physiological events may occur in multipassenger platforms such as the E-2D Hawkeye. Utilizing and strictly adhering to standard clinical practice guidelines provided an efficient process of evaluation by different flight surgeons concurrently that avoided a possible delay in treatment. After, eliminating other potential etiology for the crews symptoms, a pressure-related mechanism of injury appears to be the most probable cause.Ko SY, Rice GM. Abstract This study utilizes ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) to analyze the potential impact of assimilating radial velocity observations of hurricanes from the High-altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP). HIWRAP is a new Doppler radar mounted on the NASA Global Hawk unmanned airborne system that flies at roughly 19-km altitude and has the benefit of a 25–30-h flight duration, which is 2–3 times that of conventional aircraft. This research is intended as a proof-of-concept study for future assimilation of real HIWRAP data. The most important result from this research is that HIWRAP data can potentially improve hurricane analyses and prediction. For example, by the end of a 12-h assimilation period, the analysis error is much lower than that in deterministic forecasts. As a result, subsequent forecasts initialized with the EnKF analyses also improve. Furthermore, analyses and forecasts clearly benefit more from a 12-h assimilation period than for shorter periods, which highlights a benefit of the Global Hawk's potentially long on-station times.

EMBA Project Report
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Program Management Aircraft Office 231 (PMA231) is tasked with providing “cradle to grave” acquisition support to the U.S. Navy’s fleet of E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft. A major portion of this support centers on providing and updating integrated logistics support (ILS) elements, which include technical data. Effective and efficient management of aircraft technical data ensures that the Navy’s aviation maintenance personnel have the most accurate, up to date technical manuals available. Availability of these manuals forms a critical link in providing safe, full mission capable (FMC) aircraft ready for immediate tasking as well as the safety of the maintenance personnel. Source data for both E-2C and C-2A technical manuals is generated by In-Service Support Center at Naval Air Station North Island (ISSC NI). This source data is then incorporated into the manuals and published for use. Incorporation of this validated source data forms the bulk the technical data management process. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC), Bethpage New York, currently manages E-2C technical publications; however, prior to 2007, many of these publications were maintained at ISSC NI. ISSC NI currently manages the C-2A technical publications. Given the vital nature of these technical publications, CAPT Gahagan, Program Manager PMA231, has tasked Pax River Consulting (PRC) to provide the program office with a cost benefit analysis based on two options: • Option 1: Retain E-2C technical publications management with Northrop Grumman Corporation. • Option 2: Transfer E-2C technical publication management to the E-2C/C-2A ISSC at NAS North Island, CA. PRC obtained data from both ISSC NI and NGC and evaluated the data on three key areas: quality, cost, and schedule. Based on these criteria, there was found to be no quality advantage between NGC and ISSC; however, there was a clear advantage in favor of ISSC NI in both the cost and schedule areas. Based on this data analysis, PRC recommends that PMA231 transfer the management of the E-2C technical manuals to ISSC North Island.

Resumo:
Simulation of modern technologies has an important and informative history and an inspirational heritage. Simulation was utilised early in the development of aviation. Aircraft are controlled through a coordinated series of inputs from the pilot, similar to riding a horse. The difference is that falling from a horse is not as hazardous as falling from the sky. In response to this steep learning curve, the Antoinette simulator of 1910, operated by humans responding to the trainee´s inputs, was developed. World War I´s Allied and Central Powers utilised simulation to enhance combat effectiveness. Major Lanoe Hawker VC, of the Royal Flying Corp, pioneered British military simulators with a ´Rocking Fuselage´ for firing at a moving target, with a later version in which the ´Rocking Fuselage´ was mounted on a track. Hawker´s distinguished and innovative career abruptly ended when he was shot down and killed by Manfred von Richthofen. The advent of fly-by instruments and navigation by radio-directional beacons provided an ideal opportunity for enhanced simulation. Overcoming initial reluctance, a common historical occurrence with innovative technologies, Edwin Link combined his expertise and experience from the family´s piano and organ company to produce the iconic Link Trainer. The ability to incorporate communication from a ´ground controller´ and record on a map the pilot´s course enhanced the allies´ training programmes. The advent of shipboard radar, during WWII, in the maritime realm enabled operation in low or non-existent light situations, such as fog. However, this new technology resulted in a new class of accidents – misinterpretation of screen information leading to collisions. From the 1950s onwards, simulation has been integral to the training of deck officers in radar technology. In the late-1950s. N.S. Savannah, the United States´ atomic-powered merchant ship, pioneered civilian maritime simulation of a nuclear reactor and propulsion system. During the 1960s, maritime simulation was increasingly utilised to understand operation and crew performance better. In 1976, the use of CGI at the Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF), US Merchant Marine Academy, demonstrated the value of simulation in deck officer training. Increasingly, computers: analogue, electro-mechanical and digital, drove simulation forward. Early advances enhanced the experience for the operator and monitoring by the supervisor. DARPA´s pioneering role in the integration of ´networking, instrumentation and command and control´ has been transformative. This led to ´… outcomes that were in no way predictable, through after-the-fact were understandable.´ (Thorpe 2010)The material culture of simulation is in the collections of many museums – especially the Link Trainer. Most museum-based simulators are no longer operational due to malfunctions, lack of knowledge and concern about damage by "enthusiastic" public members. However, in a twist, there is interest in simulating simulators. The ´Rocking Fuselage inspires the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust dogfight simulator´. In recent decades, the software associated with simulation has also gained its own historical archival value. Given the complexity of modern simulators and simulations, the question arises: what will be retained in museums and archives for future generations to engage with, personally or professionally, that records the Age of Simulation?

The present study proposes an augmentation to the existing control mixing on the UH-60 Black Hawk to utilize the horizontal stabilator as an available control effector in the feedback loop to compensate for locked-in-place failure in the main rotor swashplate actuators. This modification has previously been shown to work in an adaptive sense, where once failure is detected the control mixing is remapped in flight. Now it is shown to perform well when the defined mixing includes the stabilator for all time, including the undamaged case, removing the need to detect and identify specific failures on the aircraft. Further investigation considered the benefit of allowing for more or less longitudinal authority to be given to the stabilator in different flight conditions, which include main rotor swashplate actuators locked-in-place, in the context of handling qualities ratings for the aircraft in pitch attitude and vertical rate response. Post-failure, the aircraft is demonstrated to retain level 1 performance in the pitch axis, whereas only aft actuator failure remains level 1 in the vertical rate response. Both cases show general improvement in handling qualities ratings with increased authority given to the horizontal stabilator. Finally, the aircraft is simulated flying a trajectory to a recoverable aircraft state, where the descent rate and forward speed are appropriate for a rolling landing.
