Resumo:
The aim of this dissertation is to present the criticism of Hare to ethical theories who commit the "naturalistic fallacy". These theories, according to the author, search for a "definition" of value words - words that underpin the majority of moral theories. Hare doubts the possibility of a definition of words like "good", "right, "fair", because he believes that such terms are used to recommend, or not, certain acts, to judge certain acts. In order to examine this fallacy, the author proposes the logical study of value words involved in moral judgments, seeking, reflexively, to clarify the role of words like "good" within the moral discourse. The discussion of the Harean metaethics is divided in three chapters. The first deals with the origin of the term "naturalistic fallacy", expressed initially by Moore, where the author firms its position on the undefinability of "good" and exposes the fallacy committed in the identification of good with natural objects. This chapter has, also, an analysis of the relationship between the definitional problem proposed by Moore and the inference problem of the "Law of Hume." The second chapter is a critique of Hare to naturalistic theories and his defense of the applicability of logic to moral discourse - which he believes is essentially prescriptive - through a review of sentences. In the third chapter criticisms to the vision of Hare on the naturalist theories are exposed, and an analysis of these criticisms is elaborated. After this presentation of the subject, I conclude that Hare has good reason to reject naturalism.

The Hare-Krishna movement, classified as an orthodox Vedantist Hinduism type (also called Vaishnava Movement), is considered of utmost importance in the Western religions, not only because of its rapid growth and influence, but mainly because of its constantly highlighted as exotic appearance. Considered the core of Hinduism, the Movement is being disseminated in almost every country and main cities of the world. Arriving in Brazil on the seventh decade brougth by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupãda, the "hares"(as they are also called the devotee) had good receptivity from the occidental public. The Movement starts to form small coexistence spaces in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, after spreading to Recife, where they established the first temple, in the end of the seventh decade. Arriving to Paraíba in the beginning of the eighth decade, years later the group open its temple and, also influenced by the New Conscience Meetings, held in Campina Grande, lately its seminary, this last one being the only one from the Movement in Brazil.

Introduction: representing ISKCON: spreading the message of Krishna Consciousness -- "Easy journey" to another planet: fieldwork, culture conversion, and the location of the spiritual -- A taste for Krishna: aesthetic theology and transubstantiation of culture -- Spiritual culture: varnasrama-dharma and brahminical training -- ISKCON and imitation: appropriating the model in Gaudiya-Vaisnavism -- Remembering Prabhupada: hagiography as spiritual practice -- The nectar of translation: mantra, text and the "yoga of spiritual transmission" -- Conclusion: conversion, mimesis, translation: self-realisation and the other in Krishna Consciousness.
This is a cultural anthropological study of The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), or the Hare Krishna movement. Data for this research derive primarily from ethnographic participant-observation, and include tape-recorded interviews with Hare Krishna informants as well as ISKCON literature collected during fieldwork. -- Analysis focuses on Hare Krishna techniques (saddhana, or yoga) of religious transformation, including physical, aesthetic, and discursive practices involved in the pursuit of spiritual realisation in ISKCON. Conversion, mimesis, and translation are the three key conceptual themes which inform a critical analysis of the production and effect of cultural difference in Hare Krishna spiritual practice. Ethnicity and conversion emerge as parallel concerns as the involvement of diasporic Indian and Indo-Fijian Hindus at the congregational level of ISKCON's ministry in Sydney, Australia, is examined for its effect on Western converts' experiences of Krishna Consciousness. A new conceptual approach to the meaning of 'conversion' to ISKCON is developed from this account. -- Recent sectarian developments in ISKCON's relationship with the Indian tradition of Gaudiya-Vaisnavism are also examined within a comparative theological framework. Hagiographic practices surrounding ISKCON's Bengali founder, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977), and textual practices surrounding the founder's translations of Vaisnavite scripture, are both analysed as core features of Hare Krishna spirituality. The theological significance of these practices is directly correlated with recent sectarian tensions between ISKCON and the Indian tradition.

Resumo:
The theme of the present dissertation is situated in the fields of research of the Metaethics and of the Metajuridics. In these fields of research, we investigate the characteristics of prescriptive discourse (which include the Morals, the Law, and others) and in what aspects this discourse is different from descriptive discourse (which includes sciences like Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and others). The general problem that orientated the present research is the following: Is possible to use the principles of Logic as instruments to help in the systematization and evaluation of the discourses of Morals and Law? This general problem is divided in two specific problems: 1) What is the logico-semantical nature of the discourses of Morals and Law?; and 2) Can we make practical inferences, in which at least a premise and the conclusion are imperative sentences or norms? These questions get different answers depending on presuppositions adopted and the methods of analysis used. My purpose is to reconstruct, primarily, the answer given by R. M. Hare for these questions, and, secondarily, the answer given by H. Kelsen for these same questions. In the second and fourth chapters, I reconstruct Hare s argumentation in support of the thesis that it is possible to apply directly Logic to imperatives (norms). In third chapter, I reconstruct Kelsen s argumentation in support of the thesis that it is not possible to apply directly Logic to imperatives (norms).

O’Shea, Cathy. "Understanding the reading practices of Fort Hare students". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/6886.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Universities world-wide are battling to offer access to far greater numbers than ever before. The University of Fort Hare, specifically, is also part of a troubled South African education system and is located in a disadvantaged, rural area. The main aim of this study was to understand Fort Hare students’ reading practices, as reported by the students themselves. This thesis used a framework of New Literacy Studies, which views student learning as a process of mastering discipline-specific, socially constructed norms and values, and sees the adopting of a literacy as including the adoption of an identity. Since discourse, in the NLS tradition, has been found to be a mediating mechanism in the social construction of identity, a critical discourse analysis was adopted to begin understanding aspects of Fort Hare students’ reading practices and the links between these and their identities. Critical realism is the ontological underpinning of this thesis. This means that the study aimed to identify the tendencies of certain mechanisms - in this case, Discourses - to affect students’ reading practices, by analysing interview transcripts of focus group discussions held with 30 students. Frameworks and tools provided by Fairclough and Gee were applied to interview data analysis. The ‘We blacks’ Discourse was one of one of the prominent Discourses that interviewees drew on when talking about their reading practices. It was closely allied to the ‘Resistance to reading’ Discourse, as participants explained that they tended to disregard books and did not enjoy reading for leisure. The ‘We blacks’ Discourse in this way homogenised class and other differences between black students, and indicated the ways in which their experiences were outside of academic Discourses. This Discourse served as a constraining mechanism for some, and indicated that those who used it tended not to identify with the academy. There was an evident link between the ‘We blacks’ Discourse, the ‘Resistance to reading’ Discourse and the ‘Better than us’ Discourse, in which students who enjoyed reading were called names for supposedly being conceited. Two opposing discourses (with a small ‘d’) emerged when students talked about literacy sponsors like parents and lecturers. Some used the ‘Our parents don’t chase us’ discourse to depict family members who were not encouraging, overlapping with the ‘We blacks’ Discourse. The contrasting ‘Go read anything’ discourse described more encouraging teachers and relatives. This discourse was also used to describe educators who had forced them to read, with several interviewees describing corporal punishment as being a necessary part of school-based literacy practices. It also became clear that Fort Hare’s institutional identity played a role in some interviewees’ self-identities, as the ‘Resistance to reading’ Discourse was linked to the ‘Why bother?’ Discourse. The latter seemed part of a defensive positionality that arose partly because some students see Fort Hare as a university with relatively low academic standards. However, the implication is that lecturers and others can work towards changing Discourses and so endeavour to enable reading practices. Educators could also take steps to address resistant attitudes and encourage reading.

Ward, Richard Miles Peary. "Behavioral responses of lynx to declining snowshoe hare abundance". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25065.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The behavioral responses of lynx (Lynx canadensis) to declines in snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) abundance were examined in the southwestern Yukon. Between April 1982 and June 1984 11 lynx were radio-tagged and monitored within and near the Kluane Game Sanctuary. Lynx mean home range size increased from 13.2 to 39.2 km² concurrent with a decline in snowshoe hare abundance from 14.7 to 0.2 hares/ha. Below about 0.5 hares/ha several lynx abandoned their home ranges and became nomadic, although they remained within the general study area. Track transects through areas known to have different snowshoe hare densities indicated that, lynx concentrated their foraging efforts in areas of relatively high snowshoe hare abundance. Lynx abandoned these areas after hare abundance declined. Lynx foraging effort in terms of distance travelled per day showed a curvilinear relationship to snowshoe hare abundance. Straight-line daily travel distance remained constant at 2.2 to 2.7 km/day above 1.0 hare/ha. Below 1.0 hares/ha, straight-line daily travel distances increased rapidly, reaching 5.5 km/day at 0.2 hares/ha. Three of 7 radio-tagged lynx dispersed 250 km or more from the study area during the period of rapid decline in hare abundance in 1982. No similar long distance dispersal was recorded after hare densities stabilized at less than 1.0 hares/ha. Trapping mortality was responsible for the loss of 7 of 9 radio-tagged lynx that travelled outside the game sanctuary. One lynx died, and is believed to have starved, during the winter or spring of 1984. The high rate of trapping mortality outside the game sanctuary suggests that refugia in wilderness areas are important in maintaining lynx populations during periods of low recruitment.

Trostel, Kendrick A. "Investigation of causes of the 10-year hare cycle". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26651.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This thesis combined data from a trapping and radio-telemetry study of snowshoe hares at Kluane Lake, Yukon from January 1984 through August 1985 with data collected at the same site from 1977-83 (Boutin et al. 1986; Krebs et al. 1986) to examine possible causes for the 10-year cycle in density of snowshoe hares. In Chapter 2 I used data on causes of mortality, from a radio-telemetry study of a cyclic snowshoe hare population during 1978-84, to consider the importance of predation in causing the hare cycle. I found that predation during winter was the largest source of mortality for snowshoe hares during 1978-84. There was a 1-year lag in the response of predation mortality to changing hare density. There was a 2-year lag in the response to changing density of mortality due to causes other than predation. I incorporated this information on causes of mortality into a simulation model, to see whether observed predation mortality can cause changes in density similar to those of a cyclic population. I fitted the predation mortality data to a function in which total predator response consists of a Type II functional response and a delayed density-dependent numerical response. Using a simulation model that predicted mortality rates with this function, I produced 8-11 year cycles within parameter values measured in this study. In Chapter 3 I compared a non-cyclic snowshoe hare population on Jacquot Island in Kluane Lake, with a cyclic population on the mainland, 40 km to the SE. I use trapping data from both mainland and island sites, for a period that included population increase, peak, and decline (1977-85) to test hypotheses of conditions sufficient to cause a hare population cycle. I also presented results from a radio-telemetry study, conducted on both mainland and island during a population low on the mainland (1984-85). The hypothesis that high rates of recruitment followed by low rates of recruitment, is sufficient to cause a cycle was not supported. Data presented was consistent with hypotheses that any one of the following conditions was sufficient to cause the hare cycle: 1. High rates of survival followed by low rates of survival, particularly of juveniles 2. Delayed density-dependent predation 3. Periodic food shortage.

Resumo:
This thesis considers to what extent cultural, social and political issues encroach upon and shape the private lives of the characters in the plays of David Hare. I will focus on thirteen of Hare's original full-length stage plays in which Hare asks probing questions regarding the moral fabric of society. He does this by exploring the private concerns of the individual when faced with the challenges of the public arena. This thesis argues that, although Hare's plays are consistently informed by their political contexts, for the most part political concerns serve as a backdrop to plays that focus on the private worlds of individuals. This thesis is divided into five chapters and each one will explore a comparable group of plays. Each chapter of this thesis will mark a stylistic and/ or thematic shift of emphasis in Hare's drama. I argue that Hare's plays often contain nuanced subtexts through which he attains a level of intimacy that critics do not often acknowledge or adequately address, and it is through exploring the minutiae of private lives that Hare develops themes that express the fears of the individual when confronted with the demands of wider society. In conclusion, it is suggested that by focusing on the shifts of emphasis in Hare 's canon, I have been able to map areas of Hare's work that have not previously been explored. I conclude that Hare 's plays examine how social pressures (the public frame) invariably collide with the personal needs of the individual (the private frame) and that, by extension, Hare argues that in order to improve the moral fabric of society it is necessary for the individual to accept personal responsibility for one's actions. This thesis asserts that Hare's nuanced subtexts reveal that his central characters' actions are often clouded by private motivations.

Snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) are a critically important prey species for Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis). Determination of snowshoe hare distribution and abundance is needed in western Wyoming for lynx conservation. We used linear regression to examine the correlations between snowshoe hare density, as determined by mark-recapture estimates, and fecal pellet plot counts on both uncleared and annually cleared plots on the Bridger-Teton National Forest, western Wyoming. We found significant correlations between hare density estimates and fecal pellet counts for both uncleared and annually cleared pellet counts; however the relationship was much stronger for annually cleared pellet counts. Adjusting the buffer size by omitting hard habitat edges (not used by hares) around the trapping grids improved correlations between hare density and fecal pellet counts further. We recommend pellet counts from annually cleared plots be used when precise estimates of snowshoe hare abundance are required. Though precision is sacrificed when using uncleared plots, they are useful as a coarse index of habitat use by hares. The derived regression equations should be used to identify foraging habitat for lynx in western Wyoming. In addition to snowshoe hares, in western Wyoming red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and grouse (Bonasa umbellus and Dendragapus obscurus) are used by Canada lynx. Whether young forests or older multi-storied forests contain more snowshoe hares, red squirrels, and grouse in western Wyoming is currently unknown. We estimated snowshoe hare density, and indexed red squirrel and forest grouse abundance in 3 classes of 30-70-year-old lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and 4 classes of mature multi-storied forest with a spruce (Picea engelmannii)-fir (Abies lasiocarpa) component. We recorded landscape and forest structure characteristics to understand how these influence lynx prey abundance. Overall, snowshoe hares, red squirrels, and forest grouse were more abundant in multi-storied forests than young forests. Forest attributes that predicted prey abundance were often more prevalent in multi-storied forests. Results from this study suggest that multi-storied forests with a spruce-fir component were disproportionately important to snowshoe hares, red squirrels, and forest grouse in western Wyoming. Canada lynx conservation efforts should focus on maintaining, enhancing, and promoting multi-storied forests in this region.

A combination of climate change and decades of fire suppression has led to an increase in the size of wildfires in North American conifer forests. Large wildfires are more heterogeneous than smaller fires because of their landscape context and fire-weather that ignites them. Larger fires are patchier, and have more opportunities for good habitat, but they also produce large patches of open area where prey species are exposed to predation. For many mammal species, such as snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) this patchiness means having to navigate quite different habitat patches while trying to locate adequate cover and food. The density of animals in burns of different sizes, and how individuals behave while foraging in those within-burn patches, is unknown for many species. This study addresses these knowledge gaps (fire size and within-burn patchiness) with two studies. First, I assessed densities of snowshoe hare in 9 wildfires that burned 13 years ago (3 each of small (~100 ha), medium (1000-5000 ha), and large (>10,000 ha)) and in mature forests in southern British Columbia to determine if fire size impacts hare density. I found that hares were highly variable in large burns but when they were present the densities were the highest of any sites. Hares were absent from small burns and most medium burns. Hares were commonly present in mature forests but at much lower densities than in large burns. Second, I assessed snowshoe hare foraging behaviour by measuring tortuosity, speed of movement, and amount of browse along winter foraging pathways in open and regenerating patches of the Okanagan Mountain Park fire (>25,000 ha) and surrounding mature forest. I found that hares moved the fastest and browsed the least in open patches, and moved slower and ate more in sapling patches. Hares did not change tortuosity. The data from these two studies show that fire size is an important predictor of snowshoe hare density and that hares change foraging behaviour to some degree based on the type of habitat they are in.

During a two-year field study, the ecology and reproduction of mountain hares was investigated to determine which factors are important determinants of the season of production of young. Two approaches were adopted. 1) A live-trapped, marked population of hares was maintained to provide information on the seasonal appearance, growth and survival of leverets. 2) Throughout December 1983 to March 1985 a sample of carcases was obtained in each month to provide information on reproductive performance. Blood samples were obtained from carcases and from the live population to provide information on seasonal changes in hormone levels. A rapid method of ageing mountain hare carcases was developed; this involved polishing mandibular sections by a geological method and counting periosteal growth lines. The photoperiodic control of seasonal reproduction acting through the pineal organ and its secretion of melatonin, was confirmed for the mountain hare. A radio-immunoassay for this hormone has been validated for mountain hares and samples from wild animals indicate that there is a marked circadian pattern of plasma melatonin concentration. This pattern varied with season in a manner consistent with changes in photoperiod and was confirmed by two sets of serial blood samples from captive animals under two widely different natural photoperiods. In 1984 females produced up to 3 litters. Larger females produced more offspring in total because they were successful at the first as well as the second and third litters. Early production of offspring resulted in diminished production in the final litter of the year. Small females were less likely to produce early offspring. Females in their first breeding year suffered heavier pre-natal losses of ova or embryos, especially during the first litter period. Male leverets, especially those born late in the breeding season, grew at faster rates than females. Despite this faster growth rate they reached lower asympototic skeletal sizes and body weights by ceasing growth sooner. Current theory suggests that fast growth rate and longer duration of growth produce increased juvenile mortality. There is no clear sex bias in mortality in mountain hares and it is suggested that the hypothesised mortality-producing agents cancel each other, the former acting on males and the latter on females. Late-born young reached smalled asymptotic body sizes than those born earlier and they were more likely to die after weaning. It is of considerable advantage for mountain hares to successfully breed early rather than late. Early born young are of higher quality than late-born; they reach greater body sizes which are associated with greater post-weaning survival and in females a greater reproductive success.Chemical and botanical analyses of stomach contents showed a clear seasonal switch in utilisation of the two major food types; heather (Calluna vulgaris) and grasses. On average most grasses were ingested in the summer months of April-August but some animals continued to eat them until October. Changes in plant selection could not be explained by selection for protein or against acid detergent fibre. The seasonal pattern of plant selection is commensurate with avoidance of phenolic secondary plant compounds present in heather particularly during the summer. Reproductively active females and to a lesser extent growing leverets, avoided ingesting plants containing these compounds. The season of production of young may be restricted by the availability of forage with low levels of secondary compounds.

Hare is a new multikernel operating system that provides a single system image for multicore processors without cache coherence. Hare allows applications on different cores to share files, directories, file descriptors, sockets, and processes. The main challenge in designing Hare is to support shared abstractions faithfully enough to run applications that run on traditional shared-memory operating systems with few modifications, and to do so while scaling with an increasing number of cores. To achieve this goal, Hare must support shared abstractions (e.g., file descriptors shared between processes) that appear consistent to processes running on any core, but without relying on hardware cache coherence between cores. Moreover, Hare must implement these abstractions in a way that scales (e.g., sharded directories across servers to allow concurrent operations in that directory). Hare achieves this goal through a combination of new protocols (e.g., a 3-phase commit protocol to implement directory operations correctly and scalably) and leveraging properties of non-cache coherent multiprocessors (e.g., atomic low-latency message delivery and shared DRAM). An evaluation on a 40-core machine demonstrates that Hare can run many challenging Linux applications (including a mail server and a Linux kernel build) with minimal or no modifications. The results also show these applications achieve good scalability on Hare, and that Hare's techniques are important to achieving scalability.

Abstract

The aim of this essay is to analyse what roll repression has had in the making of my unpublished collection of poems entitled Hopp som i hare. I examine how the autobiographical subject abortion has influenced the writing process and the outcome of the poems. By presenting literature that’s been important in the making of the collection I show some thoughts and ideas about Post Abortion Stress Disorder, a diagnosis without scientific grounds. In a discussion I go through the whole writing process from subject and genre choice through the revisions till the final version that were sent to be commented by the class in creative writing at Växjö University 2008. Finally I analyse my own reading before and after the workshop where the class commented the collection. It shows how repression influenced my reading before the workshop and how the class comments changed the way I red it afterwards. By hearing the class comment on my collection I also came to the conclusion that the poems was under repression and that constituted the ground of this essay.

In an unpredictable environment, animals must not only strive to achieve fast and/ or efficient locomotion, but must also be able to rapidly change speed and direction, and negotiate uneven and varied terrain. The requirement of rapid acceleration is particularly important to enable effective chase of prey or escape from predation. This thesis investigates the anatomy and biomechanics of acceleration performance. The muscle-tendon architecture and geometry (muscle moment arms) of both pelvic and thoracic limbs of the hare and greyhound was determined. Both species were shown to possess significant adaptations for sprint and acceleration performance, including substantial volumes of pelvic limb (particularly hip extensor) muscle. Whilst the pelvic limb also possessed tendons capable of elastic energy storage and return, the thoracic limbs of both species were more generalised, with the presence of high force muscles - able to stabilise and prevent collapse of the limb during locomotion. Racing greyhounds showed exceptional acceleration performance and achieved very highú mechanical power outputs. Accelerating greyhounds and hares were shown to alter their running mechanics with acceleration. In the greyhound, work and power delivered at the hock joint increased significantly with acceleration. Hind limb effective mechanical advantage decreased with higher accelerations. Accelerating hares showed a decrease in the ratio of fore: hind limb vertical impulses with acceleration. Three hypotheses were investigated in order to propose what limits maximum acceleration in quadrupeds. Limited grip, limited power, and simple inherant anatomical dimensions were considered, concluding that under specific circumstances, all have the potential to constrain maximum accelerative ability.

This thesis, which encompasses a comprehensive survey of David Hare's published plays from the period 1973-86, examines his work as a product of a war on two fronts - with conventional/established British history and within himself about the nature of socialist ideals. The result is a challenge to the tendency to place him within a European tradition of documentary or Epic Theatre initiated by Erwin Piscator and Bertolt Brecht. Nevertheless, to resolve his own conflicts, Hare commonly uses distancing techniques. He sets his plays in the past, he mediates his (necessarily male) perspective through women protagonists and the action is frequently located at a geographical distance - either in the English provinces or beyond England altogether. His search is to accommodate the modern and to achieve a valid perspective from which to make a moral judgement within the clamour of conflicting propagandas. His use of film and television - Hare writes, edits and directs his own work - reflects this search for a single perspective. What might seem a political anger stands revealed as a form of revenge against a supposed class alienation and generational disinheritance. The war on two fronts is not - as is commonly supposed- the world war and the class war, but the nature of history and of the self. In this sense Hare's work is classical, based on the dualism of good and evil, life and death. This is evident from as early as 1975, when an extended exploration of the nature of art commences. After a period of self-conscious argument, history becomes a matter of personal memory and of catharsis rather than of political solution, and art itself the only salvation.

Resumo:
In the context of changes in British theatre theory and practice, in particular in the post-1968 Fringe, is it possible to consider playscripts as literary works, expressing the views of individual writers? The emphasis within the early Fringe was on collectively organized workshops and group creativity, and on the exploration of non-verbal expression on stage, something which had been anticipated by the pre-1968 avant-garde and which amounted to a challenge to the playwright's traditionally dominant position in the theatre. However, the playscript, as an example of written fictional narrative, dependent on the theatre for its realization but not its creation, still commands an independent status as a work, and the fiction enables the playwright to explore and evaluate reality in his own terms. Snoo Wilson's works illustrate his clear awareness on the power of fiction to posit the equal reality of the rational and the irrational in dramatic terms, as a metaphor for our way of understanding reality outside the theatre, where reality and fiction seem difficult to distinguish. David Hare focusses on the discrepancy between fiction and reality in the way we experience our lives and interpret history, and he seeks, as a conscious story-teller, to reveal, in imaginative terms, how that discrepancy leads to actual suffering. Howard Brenton's declared preference for content and fact, rather than form and fiction, and for the theatre as a democratic medium, cannot conceal his consistent endeavour to use fictional narrative as fantastic as Wilson's to oppose bourgeois versions of reality. In spite of their having learned to work with theatre companies and, hence, come to see themselves as parts of a larger, complex art, these playwrights, like their predecessors, continue to write fictions which express their personal vision in a form, print, that is accessible and analysable in isolation from actual performance.

Resumo:
R.M. Hare had an ambitious scheme of providing a unified account of meta-ethics and normative ethics by combining expressivism with Kantianism and utilitarianism. The project of this thesis is to defend Hare’s theory in its most ambitious form. This means not just showing how the expressivist, Kantian and utilitarian elements are consistent, or that the three are each correct, but also that they are interdependent. The only defensible form of expressivism is Kantian; the only defensible Kantian theory is both expressivist and utilitarian; the only defensible utilitarianism is Kantian. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 aims to show how expressivism can provide a coherent account of moral judgement and discourse. The argument for expressivism draws on Hare’s thought that the main error of moral realism is to think of moral objectivity as requiring objects, moral properties which are really there in the world. It is shown, using an argument based on the Euthyphro and the Open Question Argument that realism is untenable because it makes this mistake, and this clears the path to expressivism. Chapter 2 is a full account of the issues surrounding the Frege-Geach problem (often pressed against Hare), showing how it can be solved and how exactly the expressivist’s embrace of minimalism about truth interacts with the solution to the Frege-Geach Problem. I include an explanation of how the expressivist is able to solve the most threatening version of the problem: Schroeder’s discussion of negation. Chapter 3 argues for the connection between expressivism and Kantianism. The argument (roughly following Korsgaard) is that Humean versions of expressivism run into a sceptical challenge of normative regress. Kant employed a transcendental argument to resolve this regress, deriving his Formula of Universal Law from the Categorical Imperative. This argument defended with expressivism playing a crucial role. This chapter thus explains how Hare is entitled to universalizability in a way that avoids the shmoralising objection: it is not justified merely by being derived from our moral concepts but rather from our inescapable nature as agents. Chapter 4 illuminates the other connection, between Kantianism and utilitarianism. The largest part of the chapter is spent defending Hare’s argument from universalizability to utilitarianism. Doing so shows how Hare’s utilitarianism depends on his Kantianism, and so also how it indirectly depends on his utilitarianism. I then go on to defend Hare’s distinctive two-level version of utilitarianism, especially against the objections of Bernard Williams. It is also argued that various difficulties for utilitarianism – utility monsters, interpersonal comparison, Korsgaard’s objections – can be met by a form of utilitarianism like Hare’s, which is Kantian, and thus that such a form of utilitarianism is indeed the most defensible.

This protein, which we call ‘escapin’, belongs to an L-amino acid oxidase family. The goals of my project were 1) to determine the products of escapin’s oxidation of its main substrate L-lysine, 2) to characterize the antimicrobial effects of escapin’s products, and 3) determine bactericidal mechanisms of action of these products. Escapin is a powerful bactericidal agent against several bacteria species including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio harveyi. Escapin operates through a two-step process: 1) deamination of L-amino acids (especially L-lysine) by enzymatic activity to produce escapin intermediate products of L-lysine (EIP-K), hydrogen peroxide, and ammonia; and 2) EIP-K simultaneously reacts with hydrogen peroxide to generate escapin end products (EEP-K). EIP exists as an equilibrium mixture of the linear a-keto analogue of lysine and its cyclic forms, and the relative amount of the linear form increases with pH decreases. The powerful bactericidal effect of escapin requires the simultaneous presence of hydrogen peroxide and EIP-K in weak acidic conditions, which suggests that linear form of EIP-K with hydrogen peroxide is responsible for the bactericidal effect of escapin. Using E. coli MC4100 as a model, the mechanism of action of escapin was examined. Brief treatment with EIP-K + H2O2, but not EIP-K or H2O2 alone, causes irreversible DNA condensation with a time course similar to the bactericidal effect. A mutant strain resistant to EIP-K + H2O2 was isolated, and a single point mutation was found in the oxidative stress regulator gene (oxyR). Through a complementary assay, it was shown that wild type E. coli is conferred resistance to EIP-K + H2O2 by carrying mutated oxyR plasmid. Furthermore, in this bactericidal effect, heat or cold shock does not substitute for hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative stress. Thus, escapin’s powerful bactericidal effect may be through irreversible DNA condensation mediated through hydrogen peroxide generating an oxidative stress response, but the pathway mediating EIP-K’s synergistic effect is still unclear.

Diet of the European hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas) living on a fescue (Festuca novae-zelandiae) grassland in central high country Canterbury was examined using microscopical gut sample analysis. Availability of food plants was estimated by a monthly vegetation survey. Major dietary items were analysed for calorific value, neutral detergent fibre content (digestibility) and secondary metabolites (phenols, condensed tannins and monomeric tannins). Hares in this area relied heavily on Hieracium pilosella as the major constituent of their diet. Grasses and tussocks made up the majority of the remaining food. The diet of females, males, juveniles and adults were all significantly different. Diet also varied throughout the year, although it largely reflected the availability of the various food items, except Rhacomitrium lanuginosum which was avoided. Food plant selection did not correlate with calorific value or secondary metabolite content. However, there was some correlation between the neutral detergent fibre content or digestibility of the plants measured and their level of consumption by the hares. It appears from the results of this study that the diet of hares in the study area is influenced predominantly by the availability of the various potential food plants but is also influenced by the digestibility of those plants available.

The establishment of native woodland in the moorland areas of upland Britain is increasing. However, there is no clear basis on which to predict either the effect of this on the ecology of the mountain hare, or the effect of mountain hare on woodland establishment. This study investigates the feeding ecology of the mountain hare, a primarily moorland inhabitant in upland Britain, in an upland landscape containing a newly established native woodland and also the potential impact that they may have on regeneration of native woodland species (Pinus sylvestris, Betula pubescens and B. pendula). The mean home range size, determined by radio-tracking, of male mountain hares was 12.1 ha and females 8.9 ha. The native woodland habitat was not preferentially selected by mountain hares in summer or winter. Faecal n-alkane and long-chain fatty alcohol analysis revealed that P. sylvestris and B. pubescens were minor components of the diet in all seasons. The diet of both male and female hares was dominated by Calluna vulgaris in winter and by grasses, sedges and rushes in summer. Annual measurements of browsing by mountain hares on P. sylvestris and B. pendula saplings at eight sites throughout Scotland, showed that on average only 5.8 % of trees sustained browsing each year. Relative hare abundance, tree density, tree species and ground vegetation height did not predict the extent of browsing damage by mountain hares. In contrast, a field-based planting experiment involving nursery grown B. pubescens saplings, had higher local hare densities and revealed that mountain hares do browse saplings extensively and that season, tree density and ground vegetation height are important in determining the extent of browsing. Seasonal habitat utilisation of the experimental plots by mountain hares fluctuated in relation to the frequency of browsing. In general, the results showed that moderate densities of mountain hares are unlikely to inhibit regeneration of native woodlands However, the likelihood of damage will increase if trees occur at high densities and if local hare density is high.

Despite their difference in body size and morphology, the moose (Alces alces) andthe mountain hare (Lepus timidus) sustain themselves during winter on similar plantspecies and plant parts in in subarctic environments, namely apical twigs ofmountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii). Herbivores must select areas anditems of food that provide sufficient intake rates and food nutritional quality whilebalancing this against their intake of dietary fiber and potentially detrimental plantsecondary metabolites. This selection takes place simultaneously at multiple spatialscales, from individual plants and plant parts to patches of food and parts of the wider landscape. While the herbivores must consider their need for food to sustaindaily activities, for body growth and reproduction it is also necessary to avoid predators and harsh environmental conditions. For managers, an understanding of key factors for animal foraging distributions is pivotal to reach intended goals ofmanagement and conservation plans. Knowledge in this area is also important formodels to make accurate predictions of foraging responses of herbivores to resource distributions. The mountain birch forest displays a naturally heterogeneous distribution of trees and shrubs which presents herbivores with a challenge to findgood feeding areas. In an investigation of the spatial distribution of moose browsing on birch and willows (Salix spp.) in two winter seasons separated in time by 14 years,it was found that moose browsing patterns in 1996 were correlated to those observed in 2010. It was also found that moose browsing was spatially clustered within the same distances (1000-2500 m) as densities of willow and birch, but at other spatial scales, browsing was mostly randomly distributed. It was concluded that foragedensity is a cue for moose but only at certain spatial scales. Similarly, a comparison of foraging distribution by hare and moose showed that high birch density was a key factor for both species. In spite of this, hares and moose used different parts ofthe same environment because they respond to food resource distribution at different spatial scales. Hares fed from smaller plants, and focused their foraging activity on smaller spatial scales than moose. These results emphasize the importance of taking into account the distribution of food resources at spatial scales relevant for each species in plans for conservation and management. In an experimental study it was found that intensified browsing on natural forage by mountain hares can be induced locally through placement of food. The induced browsing varied with the amount and quality of the added food, but also with thedensity of natural food plants and natural foraging distribution by hares. Finally, ina last experiment habitat preference of mountain hares across edges between open and forested areas was studied. The results were not consistent; hares utilized baitto a greater extent within forested areas than bait placed on a nearby lake ice, butbait on mires and heaths was either preferred over bait in nearby forest, or utilizedto a similar extent. A possible explanation is that hares have knowledge of their environment such that both forested areas and subarctic mires and heaths are partof its natural home range, whilst the extreme environment on the lake ice is not. During recent decades arctic areas have had an increase in vegetation density andwill be affected by future climate warming and therefore, factors that determineforaging ecology of key herbivores need to be identified. This thesis sheds some light on these factors in relation to spatial scale and forage distribution for two high profile herbivores in the subarctic.
