The beginning of the vocational guidance in Argentina was based on detecting personal characteristics regarding working abilities, and many social aspects were considered in the assessment process. In this country, increasing social exclusion as a product of poverty, lack of opportunities, unemployment and poor level of education, have introduced new aspects in vocational guidance considerations related to this new set of high level structural complexity. The professional responsibility in providing vocational guidance in such context is analyzed considering two kinds of sources: ethical standards of psychology, and specific competencies of vocational guidance.

Abstract:Why does it matter that every negative thought you have had about car salespeople, they have likely had about you? The answer to this question opens up the distinctive challenges, and opportunities, facing business ethics. Those challenges and opportunities emerge from the significant bearing organizational reality has upon individuals’ conduct. As we consider how to assign responsibility for misconduct; how to provide guidance to organizational actors about what they ought to do; and how to develop responsive ethical theory, we need to take psychological and social forces into account. Organizations shape human behavior in ways that pose unavoidable questions about responsibility, practical guidance, and the enterprise of business ethics itself. Adopting the agents’ perspective suggests that business ethics can take a leading role in addressing these vexing questions that confront ethical inquiry and social science more broadly.

This article responds to criticisms regarding pneumatology and the church’s social responsibility that are often joined and directed at Reformed tradition and theology. We will argue that, as reflected by its confessional standards, the Reformed tradition inherits a comprehensive doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, it also provides rich materials for Christian guidance and reflection on the church’s social responsibility. Therefore, if local churches neglect their social responsibility, it must not be because of the lack of the church’s teaching on its social responsibility; rather, the cause of this neglect has to be sought elsewhere.

AbstractRegulation on CSR under laws and regulations of Company Act have not given clarity and legal certainty as it does not stipulate sanction and control mechanism. In the practical level, the implementation of CSR is often mistargeted because the company does not have a clear guidance to fulfill people’s demand. It is the purpose of this research to understand how far CSR is obligatory towards Limited Liability Companies who perform business in the field of and or related to natural resources as well as to understand the reason behind mandatory CSR in Indonesia.

Taking the initiative to assume social responsibility is not only the basic content of entrepreneurship, but also an important force to promote social progress. Based on the theory of corporate social responsibility, this thesis studies human resource management. First of all, from the perspective of corporate social responsibility, this project analyzes the problems existing in the implementation of CSR, that is, how to coordinate the economic benefits and social responsibility of enterprises, how to carry out effective supervision and evaluation, and how to participate in and communicate with employees. Secondly, it expounds the theoretical basis of CSR, analyzes the significance of CSR to HR, and gives corresponding countermeasures and suggestions, so as to provide certain theoretical support and practical guidance for Chinese enterprises to apply CSR to HR management.

Safety and Quality Assessment for Sustainability (SQAS) is evaluation promoted by an as-sociation of chemical companies called CEFIC. Its vocation is to serve as a tool for the as-sessment of safety, quality, security, health, environmental and corporate social responsi-bility (CSR) of the logistic suppliers, but the activity of the companies that promote it can generate doubts about its instrumentalization. On the other hand, ISO 26000 offers an agreed guidance framework on social responsibility (SR). Through a comparative analysis, using the core subjects of ISO 26000 as a basis, the suitability of the SQAS evaluation in its “Transport Service” modality, as SR measurement tool, is tested. The analysis detects im-portant shortcomings in the SR core subjects assessed, especially those referring to human rights, moral obligations with society or stakeholder commitment and its participation, but on the other hand, the assessment stands out for its exhaustiveness in specific transporta-tion safety issues. This work contributes to contextualize the SQAS assessment as a CSR tool and identify the aspects that should be incorporated for a more effective assess of CSR. It also shows the lack of rigor of the self-regulation tools of organizations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present theoretical investigation into two corporate social responsibility (CSR) models proposed by Schwartz and Carroll (2003, 2008). Design/methodology/approach A descriptive study was conducted using a quantitative approach with 200 visitors. Data analysis involved, first, a factor analysis and, subsequently, a canonical analysis. Findings The results reveal that there is indeed the characteristic of convergence on the CSR dimensions, as well as confirm the correlation between the two models. Research limitations/implications This is a single case study wherein data cannot be generalized and there is a lack, so far, of a specific measure scale for the VBA (value, balance and accountability) model. Practical implications The results can contribute to studies on the development of CSR scales directed toward consumers, particularly tourist companies in emerging countries, as well as a guidance for managers in planning socially responsible actions and achieving legitimacy of their consumers. Originality/value Studies on CSR from customers’ standpoint are still scarce in developing countries, and the existing ones do not use reliable measure scales, based on theoretical models and adapted to the features of this audience. The present paper helps this discussion by considering the perspective of an emerging market for the first time.

This descriptive-correlational study analyzed the guidance and counseling (GC) needs of the Junior High School (JHS) students in Iloilo City in order to develop a comprehensive program that would contextually address their needs. The study used a standardized Students Counseling Needs Questionnaire. It has 81 items divided into four domains: Academic, Personal/Social, Career, and Social Responsibility. 267 students participated in the survey representing 10 purposively-selected JHSs in the city. Statistical tools used for analysis are Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal-Wallis Test, and Spearman’s Rho at 5% confidence level for non-parametric inferential computations; while mean and standard deviation were used for descriptive analysis. Results revealed the following: Public Schools have Higher Perceived Needs for Guidance Counseling (HPNGC) than Private Schools; the higher the age of the students, the higher the Higher Perceived Need for Guidance Counseling; there is no significant difference in terms of parents’ educational status and occupation; there is a high significant difference between Public Schools and Private School in terms of Higher Perceived Needs for Guidance Counseling in Personal/Social Needs. The results showed that the needs of Junior High school students in Iloilo City are ranked as follows: Career, Social /Personal, Academic and Social Responsibility. With this, a 100-page expert-validated Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program (CGCP) was contextually designed for Iloilo City JHS students following a 4-pronged framework with focus on themes: Career, Personal/Social, Academic, and Social Responsibility. Further studies must be done in terms of the specific areas of concern affecting JHS students of Iloilo City and other similar areas where a program can be built upon making the offerings more purposive and contextual.

From 1940 to 1944, apprenticeship, vocational training and vocational guidance were a bone of contention between the Direction of Technical Training and the General Secretariat for Youth - a new administration created by the Vichy government. The balance of influence being as it is, both vocational guidance and the vocational training of qualified workers seem to fall under the responsibility of the Secretariat. After a period of cooperation ending in a crisis, a partition intervened. The Secretariat received the responsibility of the vocational training and guidance of young people in “Vocational Training Centers”. Meanwhile, the implementation of the Labour Charter called in question the responsibility of the Ministry of Education over technical schools and apprenticeship. A transfer of competencies towards professional corporations was considered, implying overall control by other ministries. In this context, the problem of vocational guidance would necessarily have been reviewed. These ups and downs explain the stand taken by the vocational guidance services after the Liberation, which led to a much closer integration within the ministry of Education.

This research is a qualitative research that uses an ethnomethodology approach to study the preservation of Osing culture in Banyuwangi in academic texts. At present, the Government of Banyuwangi packs a variety of indigenous cultures and cultures in an event known as Banyuwangi Festival, an event that invites both domestic and foreign audiences. Meanwhile, cultural actors with all the limitations of their funds are trying to maintain the indigenous culture that has taken root in their village by establishing a cultural studio that is funded independently. Local companies have mostly channeled social responsibility funds but not in the form of social culture. The results of this study which was also the result of the Focus Discussion Group (FGD) forum were agreed that local companies would channel cultural CSR funds by providing direct guidance to cultural actors or cultural studio owners. As the implementation of the policy, the agreement is then stated in the academic text sheet.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to better understand how Caribbean tourism micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) perceive their corporate sustainability and social responsibility (CSSR) practices during design and implementation of new innovations. This knowledge helps our understanding of how the uniquely tourist-dependent region of the Caribbean can, through the social innovation practices of MSMEs, maximize its contribution to attainment of the 2030 sustainable development goals. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a responsibility–sustainability framework premised on seven core subjects of the International Guidance (ISO 26000) for Social Responsibility and goals from the 2030 Agenda to analyze interview data from tour operators in five Caribbean Community (CARICOM) territories: Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica and St. Lucia. Findings The results reveal that when designing new products and services, Caribbean tour operators contribute to sustainable development through social and economic change, responsible business model design, fair labor and operating practices, environmental sustainability and health and safety education. These behaviors do vary and are not consistent across the tour operators. Research limitations/implications Social and business planners and policymakers should create deliberate and purposeful mechanisms designed for Caribbean tourism MSMEs to have a fulsome understanding of how they might maximize contributions to the 2030 Agenda. Originality/value This work represents the first instance of use of the ISO 26000 Guidance in a Caribbean tourism context and provides insight into tour operators’ views toward corporate sustainability and CSSR.

Purpose This study aims to identify intra-organisational drivers that enhance the implementation of a purchasing social responsibility (PSR) approach and drivers that influence PSR throughout the phases of the process. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual framework presents PSR as a process, rather than merely a decision. It focuses on three dimensions (centralisation, specialisation and formalisation) to highlight the role and evolution of key drivers through a three-phase process (set-up, operating and sustaining). The empirical analysis is based on a single qualitative case study of Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF), France’s state-owned railway company, which is particularly advanced in its PSR-related practices. Findings The intra-organisational drivers differ according to the phase of the PSR process. Transitions across the three phases entail organisational adaptation, which require the company to transform from a mechanistic to an organic structure. Research limitations/implications This research contributes to a better understanding of the PSR implementation process through an in-depth study focused on intra-organisational drivers. Although relatively understudied, these drivers play important roles. Practical implications This study identifies operational, intra-organisational leverage actions that can benefit firms that aim to adopt or maintain a PSR approach. It also provides comprehensive guidance for activating these leverages throughout the PSR implementation process, and it helps firms identify their level of PSR. Originality/value This study proposes the first processual, organisational interpretation of PSR approaches.

Since 2009, the China Securities Regulatory Commission has begun to require listed firms on the specified boards to disclose their corporate social responsibility and encouraged others to report corporate social responsibility voluntarily. Based on the data of domestic A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2019, this paper studies the relationship between corporate social responsibility information disclosure and corporate investment efficiency and the role of analysts in moderating the relationship. The empirical results show that the social responsibility information disclosed under China’s mandatory guidance has a positive effect on alleviating information asymmetry and improving investment efficiency, and this role becomes even more crucial when the external information environment fails to meet market demands. Overall, our findings suggest the important role of corporate social responsibility information disclosure in guiding investment behavior and improving investment efficiency, especially for those companies with low analyst attention. This article expands the research perspective on social responsibility information disclosure and investment efficiency. Furthermore, our research contributes to promoting corporate social responsibility and facilitating sustainable development.

Although related research in CSR started 60 years ago, there is not much systematical literature review on CSR in recent years. This paper applies scientometric method, especially co-word analysis, to explore the frontier and focus of CSR in the twenty-first century, based on the articles from 2001 to 2014 in SSCI database. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors first use the scientometric method and co-word analysis for keywords filtering and apply social network methodology to investigate the networks of high-frequency keywords and high-frequency authors. Findings The authors summarize the current state of CSR research in two aspects. By co-word analysis of high-frequency keywords, the findings show that the focus and frontier are highly related to CSR. Based on the findings of social network analysis, this paper concludes four important research directions and possible future research of CSR. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Recent NCATS funding announcements emphasize pursuing domain-agnostic translational science projects that seek to transform the system of science. We aimed to articulate the social responsibility of translational science, defined as prioritizing improved health outcomes and decreased disparities. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We focused on the framing of social responsibilities of translational science and distinctions between (a) domain-agnostic translational science that aims to transform the system of science and (b) translational research that takes place within a specific therapeutic area. We reviewed CTSA funding calls, translational research ethics papers, and statements by leaders in the field of translational science. We integrated the social responsibilities of improving health outcomes and decreasing disparities with the values of translational science, which prioritize the relevance, usability, and sustainability of translational interventions. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We drew on our review of the literature and case studies to offer guidance aimed at helping to ensure that differently positioned actors and entities within the translational ecology can advance the values of translational science while also fulfilling the social responsibilities of translational science. We specify how (a) Funders and policymaking institutions, (b) Organizations such as research universities and CTSA institutes, (c) Translational health science teams working on innovative translational science projects, and (d) Individual translational scientists can all contribute to ensuring that translational science fulfills its ethical obligations and social responsibilities. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The social responsibility of translational science can be fulfilled by centering its efforts to develop useful, sustainable, and relevant innovations. These criteria clarify how social responsibilities manifest in practice and can help funders shape and guide the next era of translational discovery.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to develop an Islamic corporate social responsibility (ICSR) model. Design/methodology/approach – Based on Qur’anic verses and previous literature, the authors aim to develop an ICSR model with an extension of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) theory of Carroll (1979). Findings – This study extends the theory of Carroll (1979) using an operational definition of CSR that encompasses the economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic dimensions of CSR from an Islamic perspective. This ICSR model is applicable to both Islamic and non-Islamic business systems because both Islamic and Western CSR have common humanitarian grounds. Research limitations – The conceptual research is not tested in this article. Further, not all Islamic principles are integrated in this model. Originality/value – Many Western theoreticians have attempted to offer theoretical, moral and ethical grounds for CSR initiatives. However, these attempts have been broadly criticized for problems relating to justification, conceptual clarity and possible inconsistency and for failing to provide adequate ethical guidance to business executives who must determine which course to pursue and their level of commitment. Therefore, there is a need to develop the concept of CSR, which has gained popularity and wide acceptance among the Western and Islamic business communities, especially from an Islamic perspective.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the business case for corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Thailand by focusing on the consumer-organisational relationship and test the conceptual framework of Du et al. (2007). Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative study was conducted using a mall intercept survey of 184 Thai mobile phone service provider consumers in Bangkok, Thailand. Findings – A CSR emphasised brand is more likely than non-CSR emphasised brands to accrue consumer CSR awareness, positive attitude to company motivations and beliefs in the CSR of that company. Although beliefs are associated with consumers’ greater identification and advocacy behaviours towards the CSR emphasised brand than the non-CSR emphasised brands, they are not associated with loyalty. Practical implications – The paper provides potential guidance for companies to more effectively position and communicate their CSR activities to create differential advantages. Originality/value – Findings of the study demonstrate some support for a business case for CSR in Thailand.

Aiming at not only economic benefits but also social benefits in university-enterprise cooperation, this paper considers both technological innovation and social responsibility in university-enterprise cooperation. By using differential game theory, this paper provides three models of Nash noncooperative game, Stackelberg game, and cooperative game and discusses the impact of these three models on university-enterprise cooperation. Our results show that the Stackelberg game model can improve the innovation level of the university based on innovation cost-sharing and does not change the social responsibility level of the university without sharing the social cost. Among the three game models, the cooperative game model can bring the greatest innovation level and social responsibility level to the university-enterprise cooperation and make the whole system realize Pareto optimal. Our research can provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for university-enterprise cooperation.

This study constructs a panel model to conduct an empirical analysis on the influence of fulfillment of social responsibility on corporate innovation and its mechanism based on the annual data of A-share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2020. Research results show that (1) fulfillment of social responsibility has a positive effect on corporate innovation. Compared with enterprises with high economic policy uncertainty and low equity balance and non-state-owned enterprises, the implementation of social responsibility has a larger impact on the innovation of enterprises with low economic policy uncertainty and high equity balance and state-owned enterprises. (2) Corporate financialization and agency costs play a mediating role in the relationship between fulfillment of social responsibility and corporate innovation. Fulfillment of social responsibility can promote enterprise innovation by alleviating the capital-crowding effect caused by enterprise financialization and reducing agency costs. (3) Commercial credit has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between fulfillment of social responsibility and enterprise innovation. (4) Institutional investors have a negative moderating effect on the relationship between the fulfillment of social responsibility and enterprise innovation. The results can provide important theoretical guidance and serve as a decision-making reference for standardizing corporate social responsibility behavior and realizing the high-quality development of the Chinese economy.

As an important form of enterprise, family business's production and operation activities are largely affected by family involvement. This paper takes China's A-share listed family enterprises from 2016 to 2020 as the research object to explore the impact of family involvement on corporate social responsibility. The research results show that with the increase of family involvement, family members take the maintenance of social emotional wealth as an important basis for business decisions, and enterprises will take more active social responsibilities. Further analysis shows that the level of family ownership involvement plays a stronger role in enhancing the level of corporate social responsibility when institutional investors hold lower shares. Based on the subdivision analysis of the way of family ownership, the results show that the improvement of the involvement of family ownership contributes to the performance of the social responsibility of directly established enterprises, and the involvement of family governance and management power significantly and positively affects the performance of the social responsibility of indirectly established family enterprises. Based on the analysis of the difference in the duration of family-owned enterprises, the results show that the higher the degree of family involvement of family-owned enterprises with a shorter duration of family-owned enterprises, the more conducive to the performance of corporate social responsibility. This paper discusses the impact of family involvement of Chinese family enterprises on their social responsibility, hoping to provide guidance for reasonably guiding family enterprises to assume social responsibility.

ABSTRACT:The purpose of this paper is to formulate and defend a set of moral principles applicable to management. Our motivation is twofold: 1) to increase the coherence and utility of Integrative Social Contracts Theory (ISCT); and 2) to initiate an alternative stream of business ethics research. To those ends, we specify what counts as adequate guidance in navigating the ethical terrain of business. In doing so, a key element of ISCT, Substantive Hypernorms, is found to be flawed beyond repair. So we propose and defend a remedy: prima facie moral principles. After delineating the appropriate criteria and format for such principles, we formulate, explain, and defend five of them. We conclude with a brief comment on future research possibilities.

Purpose – This paper strives for stressing the need for tourism enterprises' (TEs') policy/governance innovation towards more social responsibility for stimulating their competitiveness. The purpose is to develop suggested content-related guidelines for developing social responsible TE policy and to show the practical implementation guidance for implementation of the theoretical research. According to the authors' knowledge, this has not yet been researched in the field of tourism industry (TIN). Design/methodology/approach – The MER model of integral management has been upgraded by Mulej's Dialectical Systems Theory. The authors considered all relevant and only the essential aspects needed for a requisitely holistic approach towards developing the guidelines for innovating the TEs' policy/governance. Findings – Innovation of TEs' policy/governance is possible only with the requisitely holistic and dialectical approach. TEs that will be able to track the suggested guidelines of tourism policy/governance innovation towards holism, systemic thinking, social responsibility, and sustainable tourism are more likely to succeed. Therefore, the stimulating of competitiveness and innovation of the TIN can be achieved through enterprises' policy/governance innovation that the authors suggested. Practical implications – The TEs can establish socially (and otherwise) responsible enterprise policy/governance in accordance with the recommendations developed here. Originality/value – The given suggestions are not known in available literature. The paper exposes the need for holism and consistency of TEs' development potential and interdependently examines the overlaying areas of TEs' policy/governance, social responsibility, and holism/wholeness. The Dialectical Systems Theory systemic approach exposes the need to innovate enterprise policy/governance, if humankind is to survive.

With the advent of globalization, modern enterprises, as crucial pillars of socio-economic development, directly influence their own economic benefits and societal stability. In an increasingly competitive market, enterprises should not only pursue the maximization of economic benefits but also fulfill their social responsibilities, thereby shaping a positive social impact and gaining wide recognition across various sectors. Thus, the concept of corporate social responsibility has emerged, becoming an indispensable part of corporate development strategies. Concurrently, total factor productivity, as a key indicator of enterprise production efficiency, is crucial for long-term development. Improvements in total factor productivity not only enhance a company's competitiveness but also drive overall socio-economic progress. Therefore, exploring the impact of corporate social responsibility on total factor productivity not only helps to understand the intrinsic connection between the two but also provides strong theoretical support and practical guidance for achieving sustainable development.

Hinduism (Sanatan Dharm) provides social life guidance. The four main Varṇs (classes) i.e., Brahman,Khashtri, Vaish, and Shudr suggest an ethics for all the main human activities in society. But the Brahmans often misconstrued the true meaning of this class system and considered them superior in society. They oppressed the Shudras caused them much suffering. Many Hindu thinkers and writers have conceded these historical facts. They have tried to remind Hindus of their true values and social responsibility. Modern Hindu thinkers have been inspired by the classics of Sanatan Dharm, such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Ramayan. These classics articulate the social values of human beings, according to Sanatan Dharm. The Dharm never lets anybody down based on Varn, caste, creed, blood,or profession. Shrila Prabhupada, Swami Vivekanand, Dr. Ambedkar all are modern authors whose thinking has developed these values into a social philosophy.

According to the ISO 26000 Standard, "Guidance on Social Responsibility", business management must harmonize the activity of producing, marketing or selling, under the approach of economic, financial and social profitability, together with human rights and labor rights, social welfare and environmental protection. Jointly with society and the State, the Company in general assumes a fundamental role in the process towards the respect of labor rights, human rights, justice, and gender equity to achieve a more just, balanced and sustainable society. Now then, University Social Responsibility derives from the institutional commitment with individual work and social conscience, that is to say, sustainable and harmonious human development; social application of knowledge; environmental organization; concrete actions of social responsibility in investigation, teaching and extension; responsible management of the educational impact towards real actions that permeate in students, under the principles of: ethical commitment, transparency and accountability, human rights, respect for the norm, citizen participation and sustainability. In addition, social cohesion-State refers to the effectiveness of the mechanisms instituted for social inclusion as well as to the behaviors and values of the subjects that are part of society, considering employment, educational systems, rights and policies to promote equity, welfare and social protection; in addition to behaviors and values of the subjects such as trust in: institutions, social capital, sense of belonging and solidarity, acceptance of coexistence rules and disposition to participate in collective projects. The theoretical-qualitative methodology used in this research seeks to align the interaction of these three forces, with a holistic and interdependent approach, to face the challenge of Social Responsibility in the context of University, Business and State in Mexico, considering Higher Education Institutions (HEI) as detonators of change.

Purpose This paper aims to present a systematic review of scholarly articles focused on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in developing countries and published during the period 2004 to 2014 in international journals. Design/methodology/approach This paper applied a bibliometric analysis to 101 articles on CSR research focused on developing countries. Findings The study confirms that the most prevalent CSR themes addressed in journals have been social issues, followed by environmental issues in a distant second, with ethics-related issues receiving the least attention. Also, as CSR research in developing countries constitutes an emerging stream of literature, an overwhelming dominance of empirical (qualitative) papers aimed at exploring and/or seeking interpretations to CSR motivations have been confirmed. Research limitations/implications An important limitation of this study is in relation to the methods applied. In the first place, this review is based on two electronic databases: ABI/INFORM Global (ProQuest) and Web of Science Core Collection: Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED). This means that research published in international journals that are not included in either of these databases will be omitted. Practical implications This review provides useful guidance for future CSR research focused on developing countries thereby providing a foundation for future research in this stream of CSR research. Social implications The findings of this study suggest that much CSR knowledge in developing countries reflects the unique social issues that call for companies to adopt different CSR interventions when operating in developing countries. Originality/value Although this paper is not the first to systematically review CSR research, but it is one of the initial attempts, to the best of the knowledge, to systematically review the state of CSR knowledge in the context of developing countries.

Although studies on the impact of senior executives on corporate social responsibility (CSR) are relatively sufficient, they take a static perspective when investigating the different attitudes of senior executives towards fulfilling social responsibility. Few studies consider the impact of the dynamic changes in a top management team (TMT) on sustainable corporate development, especially social responsibility. We perform regression analysis on 2010–2019 data from Chinese listed firms to examine the relationship between TMT stability and CSR performance and consider the moderating roles of the performance aspiration gap and slack resources. We find that TMT stability has a positive impact on CSR performance and that the performance aspiration gap and slack resources negatively moderate the relationship between TMT stability and CSR performance. This study expands the current literature on the relationship between TMT characteristics and social responsibility, sheds light on what situations can cause agency problems, and provides practical guidance for the sustainable development of a firm and adequate performance of CSR.

ABSTRACT:Drawing upon John Rawls's framework in The Law of Peoples, this paper argues that MNEs have a responsibility to promote well-ordered social and political institutions in host countries that lack them. This responsibility is grounded in a negative duty not to cause harm. In addition to addressing the objection that promoting well-ordered institutions represents unjustified interference by MNEs, the paper provides guidance for managers of MNEs operating in host countries that lack just institutions. The paper argues for understanding corporate responsibility in relation to the specific institutional environment in which MNEs operate.
