Pioneering anesthesiologists Paul Wood, M.D., and Arthur Guedel, M.D., were Hoosiers who migrated from America’s Heartland to opposite coasts. Dr. Wood moved east to New York in 1913; Dr. Guedel, west to California in 1928. By 1962, each pioneer had been honored with a namesake anesthesia museum. Fast-forwarding 55 yr, two young anesthesia historians, California’s Jane Moon, M.D., and Pennsylvania’s Melissa Coleman, M.D., met at the 2017 International Symposium of the History of Anesthesia in Boston. Today, these women are chairs of the Wood Library-Museum’s Archives and Museum Committees, respectively. As the newest authors of “Anesthesiology Reflections,” Drs. Coleman and Moon leave their coastal states semiannually for board meetings at the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology, returning as legacies of Drs. Wood and Guedel…back to the American Heartland.

This article tackles the question of point of view carried by lexicon. Whereas this subject is often considered from a paradigmatic perspective, this article proposes to describe it from a syntagmatic perspective. The word guerre (war) and the three syntagms la guerre (de X) avec Y, la guerre (de X) contre Y or la guerre entre X et Y are described in a press corpus. It appears that these syntagms configure a way of seeing the conflict relation (as reciprocal or not). Whereas at a paradigmatic level, the locutor is often considered as an explanatory factor for point of view, this study of point of view at a syntagmatic level points out different factors regulating occurrences: at a linguistic level, the characteristics of the prepositions, from which depend how far away X is from Y, and at a mixed textual and referential level, the salience of the event.

La présente étude se propose, à travers une double approche empirico-descriptive et déductive, de montrer que le Cameroun à la fois une « colonie » productrice et consommatrice de la Première Guerre mondiale. À la faveur des enjeux géostratégiques qu’il représentait, ce territoire du Golfe de Guinée fut la matérialisation ostensible de l’exportation de la Grande Guerre européenne en Afrique, depuis les origines jusqu’aux conséquences. Bien plus, cet article aborde un aspect non moins important de cette guerre, mais oublié : son impact environnementale sur le Cameroun. Sur la base de témoignages oraux, du matériel de guerre serait enfoui dans certaines localités ayant fait l’objet de champs de bataille entre les forces alliées et l’armée allemande. Ainsi, cette étude fait – tout en ouvrant des pistes de recherche approfondies – un inventaire non exhaustif des sites susceptibles de subir les effets polluants liés cette guerre au Cameroun.

On a beaucoup écrit sur les transports d’enfants, les fameux « Kindertransport » associés à la période nazie et à la seconde guerre mondiale. Pourtant, on sait peu de choses des déplacements d’enfants durant la première guerre mondiale. Cet article entend combler ce vide historiographique, en faisant l’histoire de ces migrations juvéniles pendant et après la guerre, en Europe centrale. Ce type de migration était originellement prévu pour offrir une aide temporaire, mais il a parfois résulté dans le placement de longue durée à l’étranger. L’objectif premier des associations et des familles était d’améliorer le bien-être physique des enfants, en ignorant largement leur ressenti. L’apparence physique d’un corps d’enfant, la maladie ou la malnutrition était une condition pour être admis au départ. L’iconographie, incluant les dessins, les affiches photographiques et les objets du quotidien, étaient essentiels pour justifier, illustrer et documenter la souffrance enfantine et leur exode. En prêtant une attention particulière aux sources graphiques de cette activité caritative, cet article entend dévoiler le passage des pratiques austro-hongroises de déplacement d’enfants du début du siècle à l’aide humanitaire internationale des lendemains de guerre.

Cet essai retrace l’évolution de la bande dessinée intitulée Our Army at War publiée par la maison d’édition DC Comics et en particulier la trajectoire de son personnage vedette, Sergeant Rock, depuis son apparition en 1952 jusqu’à sa disparition canonique en 2010. Anthologie phare, Our Army at War a contribué au développement d’un récit et d’une mythologie de la « guerre juste », appliquée à la Seconde Guerre mondiale aux États-Unis, tout en proposant une interprétation plus complexe des dynamiques de la guerre. En effet, un portrait simpliste à la gloire d’une nation toujours victorieuse y est brossé, tout en insérant au récit une réflexion sur des enjeux de société plus larges, ce qui place une telle bande dessinée dans la position particulière d’influencer, de façon non univoque, le mode de remémoration collective de la guerre et les contours de sa mythologie.

La Chanson d’Antioche is an epic poem from the twelfth century which sings the deeds of the European army during the First Crusade, called by Pope Urban II in 1095. In this text, we can see the interaction between the Franks and the Saracens, at a greater scale than anything before, in a new territory, with a new purpose, with an enemy presented in a different, yet more detailed manner. As such, the aim of this article is to present a glimpse of this special character from two points of view, that of the war and that of the word, a character seen by the poet through a mirror, a rather deformed one, which will eventually present the Saracen in a distorted image.

The paper deals with French political discourse. The scope of research includes the latest speeches of the acting French president Emmanuel Macron illustrating his anti-russian declamations which could represent the peculiarities of the linguistic indentity of the acting French leader. The object of research consists of E. Macron’s word usages extracted from such speeches delivered throughout the year 2002 as «Discours du Président Emmanuel Macron à l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies 2022», «Sonférence de à l’issue du Sommet informel des chefs d’État et de gouvernement de l’Union européenne», «Guerre en Ukraine: l’intégralité de l’allocution d’Emmanuel Macron», «Bénin: «La Russie a commencé au fond un nouveau type d’une guerre hybride”. Macron accuse la Russie d’être “l’une des dernières puissances impériales coloniales”». It is attempted to illustrate that his linguistic identity is diverse and could be designated by excessive metaphorical modeling, literature-centricity straightforwardness and picturesque descriptive words. While studying the metaphorical meanings of the lexical units under consideration the method of contextual analysis, component analysis method and the descriptive method are being used. The aim of the research is to represent the specifics of E. Macron’s verbal behavior by the example of anti-russian declamations in mass media. The relevance of the study is determined be citing and analyzing the latest interventions and declarations of the acting French president that illustrate contemporary political framework. The paper contains a large number of examples. The article may be of interest to experts in the field of French political discourse. The practical significance of the study consists in the possibility of inclusion of the examples of analysis of E. Macron’s speeches in didactic materials while designing special courses in the language of the French political communication for training students of such Master’s Degree programs as “International Relations”, “International Strategic Communication”, “Global Politics”, and “Information Support of State Interests”.

Cet article examine l’importance de la culture de la beauté sur le lieu de travail dans les usines américaines durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en se focalisant sur la promotion de la culture de la beauté effectuée par les employeurs engagés dans la production de guerre. La presse interne et les archives d’entreprises attestent la popularité des concours de pin-up, des défilés de mode et des ateliers de beauté au sein des usines. Ces sources mettent en lumière comment les entreprises ont veillé à susciter un sentiment d’appartenance et de communauté parmi la main-d’œuvre féminine nouvellement engagée par le biais de la culture de la beauté. En introduisant les rituels de beauté au sein des usines, les employeurs espéraient cultiver la camaraderie et les liens entre les ouvriers, qui, pensaient-ils, allégeraient le fardeau psychologique du travail industriel en période de guerre mondiale.

 La montagne, Madame Arnoul are first-person narrative stories written by Jean-Noël Pancrazi born in 1949 in Algeria. War is described from the child’s point of view. The writer as an adult remembers « the lost child » (last words in Madame Arnoul) dealing with injustice. War is a true story. Through the recollection the war is however like a « non-lieu ».
 Résumé
 Récits à la première personne, les deux textes de l’écrivain né en 1949 en Algérie, témoignent des crimes de guerre à travers les yeux de l’enfance. Le narrateur se rappelle « l’enfant perdu » (derniers mots de Madame Arnoul) face à l’injustice. Le souvenir de la guerre est constitué de faits réels. Cependant le regard enfantin fait paradoxalement de la guerre un « non-lieu ».

AbstractSingle Scandinavian women, professionally trained as nurses or teachers, left for Turkish Armenia with a religious calling to proselytize and work with relief. In practical terms, however, they became part of the Armenian population's fight for survival during war and genocide. Encountering the Ottoman government's war against its Armenian population, Scandinavian mission work was transformed to performing illegal rescue operations. But the missionaries' careers, relief workers and war witnesses in the Ottoman Empire did not only have an effect on their professional lives, the closeness to Armenian society also shaped their private lives. Des femmes scandinaves célibataires, formées comme infirmières ou enseignantes, partirent pour l'Arménie turque en réponse à une vocation religieuse pour aller évangéliser et travailler dans l'aide humanitaire. Pratiquement, toutefois, ces femmes devinrent partie intégrante de la lutte pour la survie de la population arménienne face à la guerre et au génocide. Avec la guerre de l'Empire ottoman contre sa population arménienne, la mission scandinave se mua en une opération illégale de sauvetage. Non seulement la carrière de missionnaires et travailleuses humanitaires de ces femmes ainsi que leur expérience comme témoins de la guerre dans l'Empire ottoman eurent un impact sur leur vie professionnelle, mais leur proximité avec la société arménienne transforma également leur vie privée.

The Return of Martin Guerre received rave reviews from historians and history teachers when it was first released in this country in 1983. The distinguished Princeton University historian Natalie Zemon Davis had acted as historical consultant to the producers of the film while at the same time researching and writing her book, The Return of Martin Guerre (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1983). Critics and historians especially praised the film for its sensitive renderings of daily life in sixteenth-century France, of the mentalité of the period, i.e., how people actually view their world. Therefore, if for no other reason, the film is a significant learning resource for students of history from secondary to upper-level college courses.1 By acquainting students with the concept of mentalités, in this instance common reference points and symbols of an historical era, the entire concept of periodization in history, with its inherent artificiality, becomes a subject of suspicion to inquiring minds. And no era in history needs further reconsideration in terms of periodization than the Renaissance and Reformation.

Résumé : L’Origine des relations internationales : guerre ou paix : révisions critiques L’origine des relations internationales entre guerre et paix, a soulevé un large débat au sein des philosophes occidentaux. Ainsi, l’intérêt de la recherche sur cette question trouve toute sa pertinence dans les retombées portant sur la légitimité de la guerre et du champ y afférent. En effet, si cette dernière est à l’origine des relations internationales, les inconvénients s’amoindrissent. Néanmoins, son champ de l’légitimité devient restreint dans le cas de la paix.

Cet article explore un épisode remarquable de l’histoire photographique et journalistique pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la reproduction et le traitement des images de propagande des pays de l’Axe par le journal progressiste new-yorkais PM en 1940–1941, à la veille de l’entrée des États-Unis dans le conflit. La stratégie éditoriale de PM communique tant une conscience aiguë des stratégies de propagande de l’époque qu’une forme novatrice de contre-propagande. En effet, PM a tenté d’inoculer son lectorat états-unien contre les effets de la propagande nazie et fasciste en reproduisant les mêmes images qui étaient au coeur de leurs protestations, mais en détournant leur intention originale par des légendes et des textes d’accompagnement qui attiraient l’attention sur l’artifice photographique et sur la manipulation contextuelle des images. En même temps, les rédacteurs de PM, en situant leur publication comme un guide fiable dans le dédale de vérités et de mensonges des photographies de guerre, exposaient leurs propres images de propagande photographique comme preuves de leur crédibilité, et ajoutaient ainsi une nouvelle strate de persuasion.

Abstract: This article follows the journey of Maude Blake Holton, likely the first Canadian woman sergeant, as well as 20 Canadian nurses who trained and worked as anaesthetists overseas during the First World War. These stories bring to light the significant and little-known contributions made by a group of Canadian women who broke gender and professional barriers during the war. Maude Blake Holton's status was deemed irregular and contested by the Canadian military authorities after the war while the employment of nurse-anaesthetists was officially approved in 1918. Although emphasizing gender-based barriers, this article reveals that some of the officers and men overseas valued saving lives and standards of care over conventional gender roles. It also shows how far military leaders and government officials were willing to go to minimize the extent of these women's contributions and to restore the status quo ante bellum. Abstract: Cet article suit le parcours de Maude Blake Holton, qui fut vraisemblablement la première femme sergent au Canada, ainsi que celui de 20 infirmières canadiennes qui ont été formées et qui ont servi comme anesthésistes outre-mer pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ces histoires mettent en lumière les contributions considérables et méconnues de Canadiennes qui ont franchi des barrières professionnelles et liées au genre pendant la guerre. Le statut de Maude Blake Holton a été jugé irrégulier et contesté par les autorités militaires canadiennes après la guerre, alors que l'emploi d'infirmières-anesthésistes a officiellement été approuvé en 1918. Créée en 1928, elle a lieu tous les quatre ans depuis le tournoi de 1930 organisé et remporté par l’Uruguay parmi treize prétendants. Le Qatar accueillera 32 équipes, mais plus de 200 formations appartenant aux six confédérations continentales ont participé aux phases éliminatoires. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Coupe du monde va connaitre une très forte croissance en termes de diffusion (à partir de 1966), de notoriété sportive, d’enjeu social et d’activité économique (surtout à partir des années 1970). La compétition est devenue un évènement global, bénéficiant d’une diffusion planétaire. La Coupe du monde est non seulement devenue la principale source de financement de la FIFA, mais un grand nombre de fédérations nationales et de gouvernements souhaitent organiser cet événement pour bénéficier d’éventuelles retombées en matière sociales et économiques.

Ten new synonymies are established : Phostria disciiridescens Hampson is =O. croeceiceps (Walker), Phostria cayennalis Schaus is =O. grandis (Druce), Omiodes ochrosoma Felder & Rogenhofer and Phryganodes gazalis Schaus are =O. pandaralis (Walker), Nacoleia lenticurvalis Hampson, Phryganodes anchoritalis Dyar, and Phostria duplicata Kaye are =O. confusalis (Dognin), O. cervinalis Amsel is =O. martvralis (Lederer), Nacoleia indicata ab. pigralis Dognin and Botis fortificalis Möschler are =O. metricalis (Möschler). One new combination is recognized: O. pandaralis (Walker) was transferred from Coelorhynchidia Hampson. A key and an updated checklist to the neotropical Omiodes species is provided, including O. indicata (Fabricius), a worldwide pest. Ten species that do not belong in Omiodes are retained until appropriate generic placements are identified.

Cette situation accroît les responsabilités de tous les acteurs sur la scène internationale — États, Nations Unies, organisations non gouvemementales —, en vue de résoudre ces tensions. Les organisations à but humanitaire jouent un rôle plus important à cet égard et ont acquis une légitimité internationale, en même temps qu'une position de force. Mais pour elles aussi, les données ont changé. Dans son article, l'auteur examine le nouvel environnement dans lequel ces organisations doivent trouver leur chemin. Le rôle du Mouvement international de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge est particulièrement mis en évidence.

We designate lectotypes for O. futilalis, new lectotype, and O. haemorrhoidalis, new lectotype, to stabilize the names of these species. We describe Orphanostigma eugeniephillipsia Solis, sp. nov., from Costa Rica and provide adult and genitalia images for all three New World species.

Exclus du Tournoi des cinq nations au début des années 1930, les rugbymen français promeuvent un internationalisme sportif non exclusif. À partir du lendemain de la Seconde Guerre, les réticences nourries à l’égard du principe d’une Coupe du monde de rugby commencent à tomber du côté britannique. L'article examine également les sources des contributions versées au Fonds d'indemnisation des Nations Unies (à partir duquel les indemnités sont versées) dans le contexte de la situation humanitaire qui prévaut en Irak, et il établit une distinction entre le mandat de la Commission et les autres institutions et processus mis en place par le Conseil de sécurité après l'invasion du Koweït en 1990. Dès l'attaque de Pearl Harbor par le Japon, le 7 décembre 1941, les États-Unis et le Canada ont tous deux pensé que leur sécurité était menacée par la présence de personnes d'origine et de descendance japonaises sur la côte du Pacifique, où existait déjà un fort sentiment anti-japonais. Les droits des individus paraissent avoir été tout à fait oubliés par ceux qui, dans les deux pays, furent chargés de remédier à cette situation plutôt imaginaire que réelle. Sans qu'il ne soit tenu compte de la nationalité et de la loyauté des personnes, tout un groupe ethnique a été ainsi obligé d'abandonner ses biens et placé de force dans des centres de détention éloignés du foyer et du lieu de travail habituel. Aux États-Unis, ce déplacement massif fut le résultat d'Executive Orders, de Relocation Orders et de Civilian Exclusion Orders. Au Canada, cette déportation fut décidée par ordres en conseil. La British Columbia Security Commission, composée de trois personnes, eut la responsabilité d'organiser et de diriger l'évacuation de toutes les personnes de race japonaise de certaines régions de la Colombie Britannique. Cette Commission eut à déterminer le moment de l'évacuation, le mode de transport, l'endroit de détention, etc. . . Aux États-Unis, quatre-vingt-dix jours après que l'évacuation eut été entreprise sous surveillance militaire, 110,142 personnes avaient été déplacées à partir de certaines régions des États de Californie, de Washington, d'Oregon et d'Arizona. Au Canada, une fois que la Commission de sécurité de la Colombie Britannique eut accompli son travail, toutes les personnes d'origine et de descendance japonaises, soit environ 21,000 personnes, avaient été repoussées à l'intérieur d'une bande de terre large de cent milles partant de la côte du Pacifique. Douglas a écrit : « Un citoyen reconnu comme fidèle ne pose aucun problème d'espionnage ou de sabotage. La fidélité est une matière du coeur et de l'esprit, et non de race, de croyance, ou de couleur. Celui qui est fidèle n'est par définition ni espion ni saboteur. Quand le pouvoir de détenir dérive du pouvoir de protéger l'effort de guerre de l'espionnage et dit sabotage, la détention qui n'a aucun rapport avec cet objectif est sans autorisation ». Au Canada, la Cour suprême s'est divisée sur la question de la validité de la déportation des épouses, des enfants de moins de seize ans et des sujets britanniques résidant au Canada. Le Conseil privé fut toutefois d'avis que les ordres en conseil devaient être envisagés dans leur ensemble et qu'ils n'étaient pas ultra vires. D'un point de vue rétrospectif, le traitement des Japonais-américains et des Japonais-canadiens pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale montre qu'en temps d'urgence, même l'homme raisonnable et juste peut parfois oublier les droits d'autrui et agir d'une façon très étrange.

La première est le progrès considérable intervenu dans cette partie du droit international. Le droit international humanitaire est aujourd'hui l'une des branches du droit international dont les règles sont les plus exhaustives: la plupart des aspects de la protection des personnes dans les conflits armés et de la conduite des hostilités ont fait l'objet de dispositions détaillées. En outre, les Conventions de Genève de 1949 ont acquis une reconnaissance pratiquement universelle. Un grand nombre de leurs dispositions sont maintenant reconnues comme étant des règles du droit coutumier et font partie du jus cogens. Ce succès remarquable contraste toutefois avec la seconde orientation, à savoir les violations flagrantes des Conventions et l'augmentation inquiétante du nombre d'actes inhumains et cruels commis au cours des conflits armés des dernières années. Les catastrophes humanitaires causées par la guerre sont devenues l'un des problèmes majeurs de notre temps. Il est évident que les dispositions juridiques n'ont pas toujours donné les résultats que l'on attendait d'elles au moment de leur adoption. This research takes the perspective of a Romanian-born philologist after having lived, studied, and taught in the Quebec public educational system for nearly 12 years. The main purpose of this study is to discuss the important influences World War II had on the evolution of Quebec society. Examining Quebec's social life and culture from a historic standpoint is a primordial step for immigrants and their integration into Quebec's society. An analysis of the corpus selected for this study, namely, Roch Carrier's La guerre, yes sir!, Jean Jules Richard’s Neuf jours de haine, Jean Vaillancourt’ s Les Canadians errants, and Gabrielle Roy’s Bonheur d’ occasion, reveals that World War II marked in different ways the disturbance of the traditional, pastoral, and agrarian life, which triggered some modernist influences in people’s lives. For instance, the war changed women’s condition. When Canadian French men were shipped out to Europe to fight in the war, women were employed in Quebec’s factories and plants. Even though they were paid less than men, they became independent and autonomous. Another example is the presence of British soldiers in Quebec, which disturbed the traditional lifestyle of French Canadians. It was difficult for English soldiers to understand the locals’ culture, who in turn, perceived them as dangerous and responsible for the war. Nowadays, Quebecers’ mentality is influenced by the various cultures they are surrounded by, yet, they still preserve some values which are originated during World War II.

What kinds of language tools and stylistic devices are used by Rahimi to describe the violence of war? When words are not adequate for the depiction of the violence of war, what extralinguistic strategies can the writer employ? These are the research questions the article explores.

Bateson's "Eurêka" has been his application of Russell and Whitehead's theory of types to the social sciences. They had postulated a discontinuity between the levels of the members of a class and a class of classes and so on. Hence a class may not be a member of itself. The cat scratches and the word "cat" does not bite. Confusion between levels, or the signifier and the signified, or the map and the territory, or the menu and the meal, is a sign of disorder. Having been introduced to Bateson's ecology, Anthony Wilden has formulated a theory of contexts, already present in "System and Structure". In order to avoid simplicity through the flattening of social and organic levels into inorganic levels of matter-energy, the theory of contexts suggest the organisation of constraints, complexites, or levels of reality into levels of logical types, using the rule of extinction. It goes on to suggest the use of the rule of commutation to eliminate spurious similarities and inappropriate symmetries which lead to oppositions and Imaginary "contradictions". It is suggested to use Korzybski and Hayakawa's rule of communication in order to get over conflicts due to misperception. To illustrate all of this, we propose to dismanthe the processes which have led to the misunderstanding behind the first Indochinese war of 1946-1954. From one misunderstanding to another, the VPA (Vietnam People's Army), in the 1980's, mobilised at the Kmer-Siamese border, at the door of Thailand who since 1939 has claimed to be the land of the Thais and heir to the Champa empire which was established in 192 and, soon after 1471, was dissolved by the "gnawing" of the Vietnamese peasants in their "long march" towards the South. The most revolting of working, conjugal and international disputes is that which emerge from misperceptions where each party is convinced of its own good will and of the foul bad will of the other. A mutual consent regarding the context, that of metacommunication, may lead to a common signification (consensus) of beings, events and objects.

The SDP leaders gave priority to Franco-German relations over the Algerian question, even after their 1958 Congress, when the pro-NLF minority could no longer be regarded as insignificant. They hardened their words but did not alter their approach and basically kept looking at the Algerian war from a German angle. The Fraktion concerned itself with the Foreign Legion, the inspection of German ships by the French navy, the presence of Algerians in the FRG. For a minority group around Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski, Willi Eichler, Peter Blachstein, Hellmut Kalbitzer etc., who considered decolonisation as a modern form of the emancipation of mankind, the Algerian war had symbolical value. They thus committed themselves to providing logistic backing, information as well as political support for the NLF. Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski is likely to have played a significant part in the evolution of the Auwärtiges Amt’s policy. As an opposition Member of Parliament, he was able to take responsibility for actions government officials could not undertake. The SDP could thus pride itself on having contributed to the working out of the new German Third World policy, in accordance with the Bad Godesberg programme. All Social Democrats however were disappointed by the turn of events in Algeria after independence.

PurposeThe authors developed a lesson study innovation for bridging pre-service teachers' experiences in an early methods course and clinical experiences focusing on the development of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). The authors analyze one planning meeting by a lesson study team comprised of four pre-service teachers and one cooperating teacher. The purpose of this research was to determine the nature of documentation during the online planning meeting and how the cooperating teacher facilitated the documentation process.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used Gueudet and Trouche's (2009) documentation framework to determine the way the lesson study team in our study used all the resources available to plan a lesson. They analyzed the video recordings of the meeting to examine the interplay between material, didactical and mathematical components during the discussions. The material components included the Teacher Desmos Activity Builder and the eTextbook. The didactical components included assessment, scaffolding, multiple representations and problem-solving activities. The mathematical components pertained to systems of linear equations and inequalities with two variables.FindingsThe authors’ findings show that the cooperating teacher performed an invariant set of actions for improving the research lesson and, also, gave recommendations about how to implement the lesson. In facilitating the planning discussions, the cooperating teacher made explicit the relationship between material, didactical and mathematical components. The authors’ work has implications for supporting the preparation of facilitators of online planning sessions during lesson study.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors did not have access to the planning meeting where the PSTs created the draft of the research lesson. In addition, they are reporting the observations of only one online meeting.Originality/valueThe authors’ work has implications for supporting the preparation of facilitators of online planning sessions during lesson study.

Hans Robert Jauss cannot simply be excluded from the history of Romance Studies, or from the history of literary science in 20th century Germany: the attractive power of his style of thought, writing and scholarship was too profound, his machine de guerre too powerful. If the “case of Jauss” is now on its way to becoming the “paradigm of Jauss,” it is time to examine scientifically the text and work, the impact and the reception of the author of Ästhetische Erfahrung und literarische Hermeneutik (“Aesthetic Experience and Literary Hermeneutics”), and to illuminate them from the perspective of Romance Studies. The considerations put forth in this essay should in no way diminish the undeniable merits of the founder of “Reader-response criticism”. With him and with his words, one may surely hold on to the hope that “the triadic relationship of technology, communication, and world view” can be brought “once more into equilibrium.” Hans Robert Jauss—to use the words of Jorge Semprún—traveled the very short, and at the same time very long, path from Buchenwald to Weimar: a path that first led him into the most abysmal, reprehensible, and rational form of human barbarism, which he wished to leave behind him as quickly as possible after the end of the war. His path to Weimar, as the symbol of a “refined” western culture, was extremely short: indeed, all too short.

In this essay from 1933, Simone Weil—only 24 at the time—offers her analysis of war, particularly as it appears in leftist discourse and revolutionary movements, and set in the context of a brewing war with Germany. In Marxism, and in leftist theory more generally, Weil finds no consistent attitude towards armed conflict, and certainly no principled opposition to it. Through certain historical falsifications and philosophical feints, leftists—of which Weil counted herself—end up propagating the very forms of oppression to which they declare themselves opposed. For Weil, “la guerre révolutionnaire est la tombe de la revolution” [revolutionary war is the tomb of the revolution], as long as workers are denied the means of waging it without a state machine controlling them, without military courts, and without execution for desertion. The conventional attitude towards (and the means of) revolutionary war threatens, in the words of Marx, to perfect the state apparatus rather than to overthrow it.

La fin de la guerre froide a notamment modifié l'environnement dans lequel travaillent les Sociétés nationales de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge. Si la communauté internationale semble avoir trouvé les moyens de résoudre les conflits traditionnels entre États sans recourir aux armes, il en est autrement sur le plan interne, où des facteurs liés à un développement insuffisant continuent d'engendrer la violence. L'auteur s'intéresse, entre autres, à la question de savoir de quelle manière les Sociétés nationales peuvent faire face aux deux tâches principales qui leur incombent: l'assistance d'urgence aux victimes de catastrophes naturelles ou de conflits, d'une part, et la prévention des situations d'urgence, d'autre part. Même si elles sont accaparées par l'urgence, les Sociétés nationales ne doivent pas négliger les activités liées au développement, car seules ces activités permettront de prévenir déautres urgences. Enfin, l'auteur plaide pour une Croix-Rouge et un Croissant-Rouge forts et innovateurs.

Comment les technologies sont-elles transférées entre les acteurs dans l’histoire ? Et comment ces transferts contribuent-ils (ou non) au développement ? En prenant la République de Guinée comme exemple, nous visons à aborder ces questions d’un point de vue particulier : les prêts de la Banque mondiale. Les prêts de la Banque mondiale révèlent, à travers leurs documents d’archives, comment cette institution internationale a géré le transfert d’argent, de pouvoir et d’idées d’un acteur à l’autre, du monde développé au monde en développement. Le rôle joué par les entreprises dans les prêts de la Banque mondiale n’est pas très connu. Notre article vise à faire la lumière sur ce domaine intéressant mais encore méconnu. La Guinée, dans son parcours historique après l’indépendance en 1958, incarne la situation compliquée des pays en développement, où les intérêts des grandes puissances et des grandes entreprises s’enchevêtrent. En se concentrant sur l’industrie minière en Guinée, en particulier sur la bauxite et les minerais liés à l’aluminium, l’article replace les résultats des prêts de la Banque mondiale en Guinée dans un contexte plus large : production et consommation de masse des produits en aluminium ; rôle de l’État dans la guerre froide et la décolonisation ; sociétés minières et sociétés de conseil mondiales confrontées au développement mondial.
