This article discusses some of the long-term tendencies of the Paraguayan political economy, focusing, in particular, on impacts on indigenous peoples and, because of the ongoing agribusiness expansion in the northeast of the country, on the Paĩ Tavyterã nation. This analysis is warranted because of the growing recognition of the importance of land-related disputes affecting indigenous peoples, particularly in countries such as Paraguay that rely heavily on agribusiness exports and on the exploitation of natural resources. It is based on more than six years of research dedicated to the land struggles of the Paĩ Tavyterã (and members of the same ethnic group in Brazil, called Guarani-Kaiowa). Instead of a comparative study, this is a relational storytelling text that draws insights from various actors, communities and situations that were obtained through a qualitative and participative methodology, involving indigenous communities as co-participants and co-investigators in the study. Empirical results demonstrate that, despite the fact that Paraguay is a major exporter of agribusiness commodities the accumulation of multiple forms of subtraction is a prevailing geographical force. The reaction of indigenous peoples is in the form of anti-subtraction. The main implication of this research is that the process of decolonisation is, first and foremost, an anti-subtraction movement that aims to revert the deficit caused by the systemic subtraction of socio-economic and socio-ecological opportunities.

Este texto traz um relato de experiência e refl exão acerca da importância do trabalho de campo na região fronteiriça envolvendo territórios tradicionais. O objetivo é descrever as vivências e experiências adquiridas no trabalho de campo no território tradicional kaiowá, na fronteira Brasil/Paraguai. Mesmo diante das difi culdades encontradas no Oguata, utilizando a terminologia guarani sobre o signifi cado de caminhada, essa experiência foi muito rica, proporcionando momentos de refl exão, questionamentos e até mesmo indignação diante do panorama que se verifi ca a partir da convivência com a população Kaiowá - Paĩ Tavyterã, pois as difi culdades que já enfrentaram, e ainda enfrentam, para viver no território tradicional ainda persistem e estão longe de terminar. A base metodológica é própria dos estudos antropológicos, com interface no direito dos povos tradicionais e, além da pesquisa bibliográfi ca, manteve-se a preferência pelo trabalho de campo. O estudo permite concluir que o trabalho de campo e o envolvimento do pesquisador acadêmico com apoio do professor orientador favorecem a formação e consolidação do nível de excelência nos resultados alcançados.

O texto resulta de uma pesquisa em desenvolvimento sobre evocações culturais de remanescentes da cultura guarani na região da tríplice fronteira entre Brasil, Paraguai e Argentina. Aportado em discussões da antropologia, sociologia e história, o texto concentra-se em enfocar algumas imagens recorrentes no momento da formação do reservatório do lago de Itaipu, demonstrando a rearticulação de saberes mediante a evocação de imagens culturalmente significativas regionalmente, como a árvore, o artesanato, o dilúvio, dentre outras. Fontes iconográficas, memórias narradas e escritas foram usadas como meio de demonstrar a experiência cotidiana de tecer o dia a dia na tarefa de sobrevivência de índios Pai-Tavytera ou Kaiowa, Mbÿá e os Ñandeva, todos os que foram desalojados no momento de formação do Lago Internacional de Itaipu. O cotidiano é apresentado como o lugar de estratégias e práticas de confronto entre praticantes da fronteira e demonstrado através da análise, o apelo a imagens discursivas para a desqualificação política do sujeito indígena.Palavras-chave: cotidiano; fronteiras; imaginário; estratégias.

Este artigo descreve os conhecimentos tradicionais relacionados ao uso e manejo da Stevia rebaudiana pelos Paĩ Tavyterã, habitantes do departamento de Amambay, no leste do Paraguai, e dos Kaiowa e Guarani, do sul do estado brasileiro do Mato Grosso do Sul. Esses indígenas, conhecem essa planta pela denominação ka’a he’ẽ, em guarani. Por meio da realização de duas pesquisas interculturais, realizadas no Brasil e Paraguai, são descritos os usos relatados por anciões e anciãs com o ka’a he’ẽ, incluindo conhecimentos ecológicos e o manejo da planta. O ka’a he’ẽ, além de ser utilizado como um remédio para a cura de vários males, e como um edulcorante de alimentos, era consumido por jovens, mulheres e homens, na fase de transição para a idade adulta, momento no qual seus corpos se tornavam especialmente vulneráveis a influências externas. Nesse contexto, o consumo de folhas de ka’a he’ẽ, e a aplicação de infusão das folhas em partes do corpo, contribuía com a capacidade de produzir ou extrair alimentos doces, tal como o kaguĩ (chicha) doce, pelas mulheres. Além de produzir a capacidade de tornar algo doce, o ka’a he’ẽ atuava de forma protetiva, moderando e controlando os poderes de alteração dos corpos dos jovens durante a fase de jekoaku na transição para a fase adulta, espantando seres cujas afecções ao corpo não são desejadas. A planta era usada em especial no ritual do kunumi pepy, logo antes da furação dos lábios inferiores dos meninos para a inserção do tembetá.

AbstractThe article investigates the long-term tendencies of Paraguayan political-economy, in particular the mounting impacts of export-oriented agribusiness on its indigenous peoples. The analysis is based on the theorisation of the geographical force of subtraction, that is, the evanescent properties of capitalist development, in which economic growth takes place via an interconnected elimination of rights, opportunities and alternatives. The discussion is focussed on the land struggle of the Paĩ Tavyterã in the northeast of Paraguay and members of the same ethnic group who live in Brazil (called Guarani-Kaiowa). It is a relational narrative that draws insights from various actors, communities and situations. The main conclusions are that, despite the fact that Paraguay is now a major exporter of agribusiness commodities, what has prevailed is the accumulation of multiple forms of political, environmental, social and economic violence. At the same time, the decolonising reaction of indigenous peoples, in alliance with other sectors of the working class, aims at reverting the deficit caused by systemic socio-economic subtraction and in pursuit of transformative additions.

Meu nome é Claudemiro Pereira Lescano, sou do povo Ava Guarani, considerado como Nhandéva, e também do povo Tavyterã, considerado Kaiowá; moro na aldeia Taquaperi, no município de Coronel Sapucaia, Mato Grosso do Sul. Penso que antes de falar da minha trajetória acadêmica é importante falar sobre o meu povo Ava Guarani e Tavyterã. O Tavyterã, conhecido como Kaiowá, é o povo da floresta ka’aguygua ou ka’aguy pegua, nome que veio dos não índios. Minha família, por parte da minha mãe, é Tavyterã; vieram do Cerro Peron, a 15 km da aldeia Taquaperi, no município de Coronel Sapucaia. A família do meu pai é Ava Guarani, conhecido como Nhandéva; vieram da aldeia Ita Poty, na região de Amambai, a 45 kmde Taquaperi.

Dans le contexte frontalier entre le Mato Grosso du Sud au Brésil et le département paraguayen de l’Amambay, la thèse propose deux ethnographies croisées, l’une auprès des acteurs de l’agrobusiness et l’autre avec les autochtones Guarani Paĩ Tavyterã/Kaiowa. Par une ethnographie au quotidien, l’analyse distincte de ces deux groupes permet de décrire, d’opposer et de contraster deux rapports au territoire de plantation. D’une part, la thèse analyse les affinités entre les acteurs de l’agrobusiness, le sol qu’ils investissent affectivement et économiquement et une plante, le soja. Par une analyse des pratiques agronomiques de soin à la plantation, ce travail rend compte des mécanismes par lesquels ces acteurs justifient leur occupation coloniale du sol, et décrit comment, en se positionnant comme victimes de processus globaux, ils actualisent et perpétuent la violence coloniale contre les populations amérindiennes qui cohabitent sur le territoire et revendiquent le droit aux terres. D’autre part, la thèse propose une ethnographie des trois communautés qui vivent au contact permanent de monocultures de plantation. Sur des territoires restreints récupérés des mains de l’agro-industrie et sur une terre contaminée et ravagée, les autochtones frayent dans un contexte hostile : l’insertion à l’économie précaire d’un travail raréfié impose de trouver des sources de revenus entre les champs de la plantation, les bois du narcotrafic et dans la grappille autonome. À l’encontre de toute forme idéalisée de résistance autochtone, cette partie analyse la dimension interstitielle de la vie et montre comment, dans les rets de l’extrême violence subie, se trouvent des manières d’alimenter un lien affectif au territoire et au végétal. Ensemble, ces analyses croisées concourent à une mise en contraste d’un territoire en conflit, rendant compte de la persistance des Paĩ Tavyterã/Kaiowa et des logiques affectives de la violence plantationnaire. Ce faisant, cette thèse contribue à penser la fragilité des assemblages du capitalisme et la de la persistance amérindienne
Against the backdrop of the border between Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil and the Paraguayan department of Amambay, this thesis is a double ethnography, it follows both agribusiness actors and the indigenous Guarani Paĩ Tavyterã/Kaiowa. Through daily ethnography, the separate analysis of these two groups enables me to describe, oppose and contrast two relationships to plantation territory. This thesis focuses on the affinities between agribusiness actors, the soil they invest in emotionally and economically, and the soybean plant. The description of the agronomic practices used to care for the plantation reveals the mechanisms by which these actors justify their colonial occupation of the land, and by positioning themselves as victims of global processes, actualize their position as perpetrators of colonial violence against the Amerindian populations who cohabit on the territory and claim their right to the land. On the other hand, this thesis is an ethnography of three communities living in permanent contact with plantation monocultures. On restricted territories reclaimed from the hands of agroindustry and on contaminated, ravaged land, the natives make a do in a hostile context: insertion into the precarious economy of a rarefied work force means finding sources of income between the plantation fields, the woods of drug trafficking and occasional pilferage. Contrary to any idealized form of indigenous resistance, this section analyzes the interstitial dimension of life and shows how, in the midst of extreme violence, they find ways to nurture an affective bond with the land and plants. Taken together, these intersecting analyses provide a contrasting view of a conflicted territory. They account for the persistence of Paĩ Tavyterã/Kaiowa and the affective logics of plantationary violence. In so doing, this thesis contributes to thinking about the fragility of capitalism's assemblages and the strength of Amerindian persistence
