Estrangement and Out-of-Placeness in the Works of Luigi Gualdo Characters and places between ideal and reality, cosmopolitanism and uprooting This paper focuses on the different forms of estrangement and out-of-placeness which can be found in Luigi Gualdo’s works. Gualdo (1844-1898) was a prominent writer whose works are influenced by French realism and Parnasse, Italian scapigliatura and the European decadence and estheticism. Moreover, he lived between France and Italy and he was one of the main passeurs between French and Italian literature of his time. This particular condition of the writer is reflected in his works and in particular in the portraiture of his characters, which are often rootless artists and mundane women with a strong component of cosmopolitism. The aim of this paper is to analyse some of the characteristics and features of Gualdo’s characters according to the parameters of estrangement and out-of-placeness. In particular I will focus on the ambiguous nature of the relation between ideal world and reality, of artistic genius and its place in society and the normal world, as well as on more specific topics related to the subject, such as spleen, places described as theatrical decors, hotel rooms and feminine nomadic attitudes, cosmopolitism as both a challenge and an opportunity for the characters. I will conclude on a specific issue regarding the struggle between the estranged character, time, and aging.

This article deals with an early modern court historian's judgments concerning the political competence and incompetence of his contemporaries. Although the phrase “political competence” may seem anachronistic when referring to the second half of the seventeenth century, hardly any historian today would deny that, at least since the late medieval period, European intellectuals belonging to political elites had developed their own understanding of what constitutes effective statesmanship. That understanding was not always normative, or based on exempla of the classical past—it could be practical and expressed through evaluations of current events. In the middle of the seventeenth century, the future Habsburg court historian Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato wrote about Oliver Cromwell: “And let it be noted from his extraordinary example, that not the nobility of birth, nor riches . . . qualify one for high office, as it usually solely happens, but that it is the opportunity that . . . wakes up the spirits, and sharpens the minds.” This article will deal with Priorato's judgments of political competence (and incompetence) in the works that he wrote while in the service of the Austrian Habsburgs.

In the framework of archaeological surveys conducted in 2002-3 for the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell'Umbria around the Via Flaminia, the Società Cooperativa Kronos discovered the site known as the “Villa of Rufio” (the name comes from an inscription dedicated to Caius Iulius Rufio). After 4 excavation campaigns (2003-6) the monumental character of a large villa was established, and in 2007 a team from the University of Alicante led by the first-named author began fieldwork, focusing on the analysis of agricultural and commercial production patterns through an examination of the type of manpower in use during the Augustan era. The site lies in the village of Giano dell'Umbria (Perugia), in the foothills of Gualdo Cataneo-Montefalco of southern Umbria (fig. 1). To the north is the Roman town of Mevania (Bevagna), to the south the Martani mountains, at the foot of which lies Mansio Ad Martis (Massa Martana).

Without claiming to be exhaustive, this thesis aims to reconstruct a transnational Franco-Italian literary history by revisiting the wandering trajectories of three writers in the period between the fin de siècle and the avant-gardes (late 1860s - early 1950s): Luigi Gualdo (Milan 1844 - Paris 1898), Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (Alexandria of Egypt 1876 - Bellagio 1944) and Alberto Savinio (Athens 1891 - Rome 1952). Owing to the linguistic and creative practices shared by these authors, who use Italian and French both in their writing and in their translations and self-translations, we are led to associate them with the broader concept of “Literary Translingualism”. By profiling the three prototypical cases in the light of three major axes (“transnational mobility”, “intellectual nomadism” and “linguistic flânerie”), a common critical perspective emerges. On the one hand, we manage to determine how their wandering affects their “self-image” as well as their artistic practice; on the other hand, we notice in what way the sharing of a common translingual practice, as well as a condition of intellectual hybridization, also reveal a diversification of singularities. In the attempt to link an “individual multilingualism” to a broader taxonomy of translingual writers, we also consider the self-translating activity of the Franco-Italian authors in the third part of our research. By establishing the theoretical framework of this disciplinary horizon, we undertake a linguistic, literary, translational, and socioliterary analysis of the chosen literary corpus. We also use a genetic criticism approach to archive documents to explore the hermeneutic course done by the author when rewriting a work in another language, and the translational strategies adopted at the time of the transfer

Guardol, a domain-specific language (DSL) developed by Rockwell Collins, was designed to streamline the process of specifying, implementing, and verifying Cross Domain Solution (CDS) security policies. Guardol’s syntax and intended computational behavior tightly resembles the core of many functional programming languages, but a number of features have been added to ease the development of high assurance cross domain solutions. A significant portion of the formalization and implementation of Guardol’s grammar and type system was performed by the SAnToS group at Kansas State University. This report summarizes the key conceptual components of Guardol’s grammar and tool- chain architecture. The focus of the report is a detailed description of Guardol’s type system implementation and formalization. A great deal of effort was put into a formalization which provided a high level of assurance that the specification of types and data structures were maintained in the intended implementation.

There are a number of network situations where different networks have different security policies and still need to share information. While it is important to allow some data to flow between the two networks, it is just as important that they don't share any data that violates the respective security policies of the networks. Constraints on data sharing are often phrased in terms of classification levels of data (e.g. top secret, secret, public). They might also be stated in terms of the contents of the data (e.g. are there military base names, is the location correct). The software and hardware that works to solve these problems is called Cross Domain Solutions (CDS). There are a variety of hardware platforms capable of implementing CDS. These platforms are all configured in different ways and they are often proprietary. Not only are there a number of platforms on the market, many are difficult to understand, verify, or even specify. The Guardol project provides an open, non-proprietary, and domain-specific language for specifying CDS security policies and implementing CDS. Guardol is designed to be easy to understand and verify. This thesis describes the design and implementation of primary Guardol components. It includes a description of the Eclipse GUI plug-ins that have been developed for the project as well as a description of new formal analyses and translations that have been developed for the language. The translation is used to plug into external tools for model checking and the analyses help to make the translation clean and efficient. The analyses are also useful tools to help make the use of Guardol easier for developers.

This study is linked to the online research Regional History, the Graduate Program in History Federal University of Paraíba, with a major in History and Historical Culture, and aims to examine the creation and operation of the National Guard in the province of Paraiba (1831-1850). The creation of the National Guard, on August 18, 1831, was one among the various measures undertaken by the government regent, to ensure the unity of the national Brazilian state. This institution should be composed of those who were considered citizens of the Empire of Brazil, so they were prescribed in the Constitution of 1824. Therefore, besides investigating the creation of this institution in the province of Paraiba, we present the procedures involving its organization and functioning, as well as legal profiles / Ethnic some characters that composed their ranks. We will also provide a brief discussion of citizenship in the nineteenth century, shedding light on how this citizenship was experienced by militiamen in the province because, to them, fell the privilege of being part of the militia. We will review the daily actions of the missionaries of the order and attempts to find some guards to escape the ordinary service of the Guard - which, contrary to what had just tried the Act creating the National Guard from 1831: the "patriotism" of his militia. And when it comes to positions of command in the militia, will discuss the importance of this position gave the chosen, and over the years has become highly political.

This study will examine the implications of the formation process of the National Guard and the consequent extinction of Militias and Ordinances. These last two forces had been created during the colonial period. Both colonies forces and the National Guard had in common the characteristic of being non-professional forces, or militia. However, the two colonial forces were organized from characteristic elements of the ancien regime societies, while the National Guard was organized by the values of the modern conception of citizenship adopted by the National States. This study is structured as follows: first place we seek to understand what were the main features of the militias and the motives for the states to adopt this kind of force; Secondly we will examine what were the reasons for the Empire of Brazil to extinguish the colonial militias and create in their place the National Guard; finally we seek to analyze the process of organizing the National Guard in the province of Ceara during the 1830s.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to evaluate the initial growth and the levels of glycine betaine in pigeonpea roots under salt stress associated with exogenous polyamine (Spd) application, to evaluate the use of glycine betaine as biochemical marker for salt stress tolerance and the effect of Spd when associated to salt stress, as well as obtain forage legumes that can be used as soil salinity indicators. The genotypes IAC Fava Larga and Caqui were used in this study. Soil salinity was studied with NaCl concentrations of 0; 20; 60 and 80 mM, while Spd was applied at rates of 0.0 mM and 0.5 mM. Ten days after seeding, seedlings were acclimated for 20 days in hydroponic solution in a grow room under partially controlled conditions. Also, growths of roots were determined (density, diameter and dry mass). The experiment was arranged in randomized block design, in a 2x2x4 factorial with five replications. The levels of glycine betaine were determined in seedlings 50 days after germination. The results show that diameter in roots of Caqui genotype is bigger than IAC Fava Larga; Adition of Spd results in a increase of diameter and reduction of density and dry mass in both genotypes roots; The saline stress reduced the diameter and dry mass in both genotypes roots; The addition of 0.5 mM spermidine increased the concentration of glycine betaine in roots of the IAC Fava Larga genotype; Glycine betaine can be considered a biochemical marker for moderate salt stress in IAC Fava Larga roots.

This dissertation, which is organized through three themes - memory, aging and samba, was conducted above all starting from observing the everyday of a particular group: elderly people who are part of the Old Guard wing of the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro. The main purpose is to see how this group constitutes itself from multiple memory work as guardians of the traditions of samba carioca. For this, we divide the work into four chapters, each one of them focused on one of the research objects. Thus, we first present in the central object, in this case, the ten seniors belonging to the Old Guard and who were interviewed, from the theoretical presuppositions of Oral History, and narratives that are building significant other and the other around a territory specifically, the world of samba. In subsequent chapters the theoretical question of aging and memory is constructed so interwoven once more narrative from fragments of the elderly. As a privileged methodology, beyond the techniques of oral history interview, we used the presuppositions of ethnographic analysis. Life stories are composed alongside participant observation in various meetings held by the elderly, standing up for those festive character. The feasts that organize weekly, forming in places of particular practices of sociability, are the high point of application of the methodology, made through participant observation and construction of field diaries. Furthermore, the concern had of registering images in these moments, figuring them in the work not as mere illustrations, but as a peculiar narrative of these significant moments of the elderly in their relation to memory and samba.

The aim of this work is to propose an analysis of the Civic Guard, a demilitarized force apparatus, at work in the main parishes of Recife, intended to inhibit the deviations, conflicts and crimes, serving between 1876 and 1890. The story of the police equipment in Brazil has been a very complex and exciting topic for researchers who seek to analyze the social transformations and its forms of social control designed to hinder practices considered troublesome and criminal. The Civic Guard was a civil uniformed police apparatus, off-quarters, under the command of the Chief of Police, with the main priority to protect the four central parishes of Recife - São Frei Pedro Gonçalves (now Recife Quarter), São José, Santo Antônio and Boa Vista - which were the main target of urban improvements experienced by the city in the period screen. In 1880, the guard was extended to the Parish of Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Graça, and in 1890 to Afogados. Several changes and improvements could be seen, however, population behavior, especially the poorer classes, had no major changes. Therefore, we believe that the Civic Guard was formed in one of the projects set to Recife in the nineteenth century in an attempt to fight crime and discipline the population, since the squares of the institution should behave civilized, polite and courteous to all, with the new way to behave in the urban environment. In our analysis of this police force - using as base police sources and the press - we will emphasize its activities in combating criminal offenses and practices, showing that in many instances the institution has completely distanced itself from its civilizing project.

AbstractIron and steel arms appeared in China during the late Warring States while guards on Han dynasty jian (double-edged sword) mainly continued Warring States designs. Single-edged ring-pommel sword (huanshoudao) which appeared during the same period did not have a guard. During the Jin dynasty, a type of V-shape sword guard appeared, which continued into the Southern and Northern dynasties. In the Tang dynasty, on the one hand, arms design continued Northern Zhou and Sui trends; at the same time, it absorbed Turkic and Sassanid influences from the west, which gave rise to a unique Tang sword aesthetic. From then on, V-shape guards started to gain popularity in China. Developments of this style were to have a major influence on sword guard designs during the Song, as well as among the Mongols and Tibetans until it finally attained the familiar form of zoomorphic guard during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

This paper recounts the overwhelming success of the helicopter response during Hurricane Katrina. All branches of the United States Military and the National Guard flew those helicopters on nearly endless search and rescue missions, saving over 35,000 lives directly and tens of thousands more through air-lifted supplies and support. Surprisingly, the military development and utilization of the helicopter as a lifesaving machine once met great resistance; only the relentless, dogged determination of Coast Guard officers, William Kossler, Frank Erickson, and Stewart Graham, would turn the tide and launch a new chapter in aviation history, which came to demonstrable fruition with Hurricane Katrina. Of particular interest is the involvement of the oldest son of Dr. Igor Sikorsky, Sergei Sikorsky. During his WWII Coast Guard service, Sergei contributed greatly to helicopter capability by participating in the development and initial testing of the helicopter rescue hoist.

This paper summarizes results of a large research program intended to develop a draft rear underride guard specification for heavy vehicles. Results of a series of laboratory and full-scale crash tests performed at the Transport Canada Research Center were used in the development of these specifications. A total of eleven full-scale crash tests was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of different underride guards. The first ten of these tests were performed on a simulated trailer attached guard. Four different underride guard designs were used in these ten full-scale crash tests. Three different vehicle models traveling at 48, 56 and 65 km/h speeds were used to impact underride guards head on. Results of the first ten crash tests show that the currently used US FMVSS 223 standard is far from adequate in preventing the occurrance of rear underride. Based on findings obtained from these crash tests, an improved guard design was developed and tested using a 16-meter trailer. This final crash test verified the effectiveness of improved guard design in reducing the undesirable effects of rear underride crashes. Based on the results, a draft heavy vehicle rear underride guard specification was developed.

Abstract Soccer shin guards have been shown to provide significant protection against minor injuries such as scrapes and contusions. However, several studies suggest that serious injuries such as tibia fractures may still occur despite the use of shin guards [1]. The majority (79%) of such fractures are minimally displaced, suggesting that the injuring impacts are slightly above the fracture tolerance of bone [1]. In this respect, shin guards with improved impact properties may be able to decrease the risk of serious injuries in soccer. Impact testing of shin guards has shown that some designs and materials provide better protection than others [2]. Generally, a shin guard reduces impact by using a stiff shell over which to distribute the impact and a compliant material that absorbs impact energy. Unfortunately, the protective physical characteristics of guards correlate best with increased weight and thickness, factors that conflict with players’ preferences for lighter, more comfortable guards.

Abstract Increasingly, the turbomachinery industry is facing issues related to high temperatures and oil misting inside coupling guards. This leads to machinery downtimes and loss of revenue. Many in the turbomachinery industry are investing significant time and effort to reduce heat generation inside coupling guards. The present computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigation of Air+Oil flow and heat transfer in the coupling guard was conducted to investigate these issues. In prior investigations, the emphasis has been mostly placed on predicting temperature by modeling pure airflow in the coupling guard. This paper presents CFD simulations completed under two conditions: 1) with pure AIR -in a Single phase and 2) a multi-phase fluid combining Air+Oil. The coupling guard geometry is cylindrical in nature. Given the symmetry in the geometry, a 90-degree sector was modeled, allowing significantly smaller meshes and lower run times without compromising quality. In this paper, the modeled geometry includes both Fluid + Solid domains that do not contain an inlet or outlet. This work explains the CFD methodology for multiphase and conjugate heat transfer analysis. The objective of this paper is to predict the temperature on the coupling guard considering Air + Oil flow and heat transfer. The domain evaluated consists of several stationary and rotating components. The CFD domain used for the conjugate heat transfer analysis consists of fluid between the rotating shaft and the stationary cover. The solid domain includes the coupling guard cover. The commercially available software ANSYS CFX 18.1 was used. The mesh was created using Tetrahedral/Prism elements. Both steady-state and unsteady CFD analyses were completed. As noted, multiphase CFD analyses were carried out using Air and Oil VG68 as a homogenous type of mixture. Detailed flow field characteristics (total and static temperature, pressure, streamlines colored by Mach number, etc.) and CFD-predicted temperatures are compared between the Pure Air and Air+Oil simulations. Also, available measurements were used to validate the CFD results. Temperature results obtained from the CFD simulations were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The CFD modeling approach developed can be used to design coupling guards with lower surface temperatures.

Unguarded or poorly guarded machinery claims many limbs and lives each year. Similarly, injuries from machinery undergoing maintenance and/or cleaning operations are far too numerous. Machine guarding and related machinery violations continue to rank in the top 10 in OSHA citations. The lists of types of machines and their associated hazards, as well as the types of injuries are too lengthy to mention. Maximizing the effectiveness of safeguards is essential for protecting workers from preventable injuries. One of the most effective means of machinery guarding is the interlocking guard, which is a device that shuts off or disables a machine function when a guard or cover is removed or opened. Interlocking guards are an important component of guarding safety. Often, an interlocked guard is the only type of guard that can be used. This paper presents several scenarios where the interlocking guard was the best available technology for handling the hazard. Interlocks are a rapidly developing field. The advantages and drawbacks of interlocks are discussed, as well as the different types of interlocks available.

The article describes a cross-guard from archaeological excavations of Chersonesus which were conducted in 1905 under the guidance of Karl Kazimirovich Kosciuszko-Valyuzhinich. The crossguard is a rare example of such type of armament and for now it is the only cross-guard of its type which originates from the territory of the Byzantine Empire. Despite these facts the cross-guard didn’t attract the interest of researchers for more than 100 years. In 2009 it was studied by the Bulgarian archaeologist V. Yotov. His article was devoted to the search of analogies and didn’t contain a detailed description of the object. The current article fills this gap. On the basis of the context and the analogical objects the article suggests to limit the dating by the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th century for the Chersonesus cross-guard and by the end of the 10th and the first half of the 11th century for the cross-guards of this type in general.

Abstract Safety and security are two of the most important requirements of the nuclear industry. In the event of a potential problem, the consequences can have serious implications for the public and the environment. Measures should be taken against various hazards and threats by analyzing possible realistic scenarios. Therefore, probabilistic risk assessment is one of the necessary technologies to achieving safe and secure nuclear facilities. In the study, a limited scope probabilistic risk assessment was made for a possible terrorist attack against a generic small modular reactor (SMR). A possible attack threat was selected to develop scenarios by following a probabilistic risk assessment approach. In the scenarios created, terrorists have to pass all physical barriers that security guards protect. Thus, the decisions and actions of the security guards directly affect the result of the attack. To analyze these events, a human reliability assessment (HRA) was employed. In the first study, each security guard’s decision-making process was analyzed using the Standardized Plant Analysis Risk Human Reliability Assessment (SPAR-H) method. The purpose of its use in this study is to verify the SPAR-H method’s applicability for security applications. In this paper, we give the likelihoods of each security guard making a decision and taking action to prevent terrorists from passing obtained using the SPAR-H method. Besides, event tree and fault tree analyses were performed using the SAPHIRE PRA software. Finally, since the current HRA methods were designed for control room operators, we introduce a new model-based HRA methodology applicable for security guards to be used in physical security PRAs.

Abstract Under current circumstances, the daily training of the security team in nuclear power plant is carried out by the security company providing security services according to the requirements of the power plant security department, followed by manual assessment and authorization among the guards. There are several problems in this process that can be improved: evaluation is highly subjective, difficult to quantify, and difficult to standardize. Based on the principles of objectivity, unity, comprehensiveness and extendibility, this paper proposes an intelligent assessment method for nuclear power plant security guard capability. Firstly, it decomposes single task into core abilities which are aggregated to an ability library based on their corresponding tasks. Secondly, all task scenarios are made into VR test scenarios with core abilities as the test points, and aggregated into test banks. Then use the VR assessment system for automatically issuing, collecting and scoring test papers. Finally, a comprehensive assessment of the tested guard will be released with the combination of the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method. This method not only can increase objectivity and scientificity of assessment but also has extendibility to new job requirements to meet dynamic changes.

Abstract A unique system is introduced for monitoring the viability of conventional position switch interlocks on movable barrier guards. At closely spaced intervals a test device motor causes the guard to open slightly to check if the interlock will change state in an attempt to interrupt control power to the protected machine. The machine will not in fact shut down during the testing phase because the interlock system will be isolated from the machine operating motor contactors during the test duration. Testing of a guard is annunciated just before and during the automatic testing phase. Any failures of an interlock or its testing system will also be annunciated until their causes are corrected. When a latching system is used in conjunction with the guard, a faulty interlock will cause the guard to be locked closed until it is convenient to effect a repair. Production is not interrupted because the interlock remains bypassed during this period. If an interlock is temporarily circumvented or if the interlock guard is sabotaged, the test device motor will not cause a change in state of the interlock during the test phase; again, system malfunction will be annunciated and/or the guard will remain latched and/or the machine will be shut down. The proposed process provides the following advantages: • A quantum leap in system reliability and safety is obtained using even the most ordinary “limit switch” type interlocks. • The tamper-resistance of all known interlocks will be greatly enhanced; all popular forms of temporary interlock circumvention are eliminated. • Long term sabotage which involves simultaneous guard removal and interlock bypassing is addressed for the first time; to defeat the proposed process involves the most outrageous restructuring of the control system. • The system will safely endure adhesive environments that may cause interlock activators to stick in their “fail to danger” states. • The monitored machine is almost never shut down nor production interrupted during or after the testing phase even if mischief is uncovered. • The testing of large numbers of interlocks will not expose the machines’ electric power motors to the frequent restart demand associated with some conventional manual testing procedures. • Without compromising safety, maintenance of even multiple interlock failures may be deferred until their repair is convenient. • The assurance of working interlocks may enable OSHA to expand applications where maintenance is performed under “control stop” as opposed to the more elaborate “lock out.” • The design of the new test and monitoring system may be executed and implemented using straightforward hardware and software that are firmly entrenched technology.

Fences in combination with wildlife crossing structures are the most effective combination of mitigation measures to achieve these objectives. For fences to reliably reduce collisions with large wild mammals by 80% or more, at least 5 kilometers (3 miles) of road length needs to be fenced, including a buffer zone that extends well beyond the known hotspots for wildlife-vehicle collisions. Collisions that still occur within the fenced road sections tend to be concentrated near the fence-ends. In addition, gaps in fences, including at access roads, can result in concentrations of collisions inside fenced road sections. Gates are commonly used at gaps in the fence at low traffic volume access roads, but they are often left open allowing wildlife to access the road corridor. While cattle guards or wildlife guards can be effective for some ungulate species, double wide cattle or wildlife guards consisting of round bars or bridge grate material, situated above a pit, are generally recommended for ungulates. However, such guards are not a substantial barrier for species with paws, including many carnivore species. Electrified mats or electrified guards can be a barrier for both ungulates and species with paws, but to prevent animals from jumping across the mat, they need to be 4.6-6.6 m (15-22 ft)) wide. For this project, a combination of wildlife guards and electrified barriers on top of these wildlife guards was evaluated. Both electrified mats that were tested (Crosstek and BS Fabrications) on top of existing wildlife guards resulted in a near absolute barrier for both ungulates and species with paws (97.9% barrier for the 2 deer species combined, 100% barrier for coyotes and black bears); an improvement to a wildlife guard only without an electrified mat (89.3% for the 2 deer species combined, 54.5% barrier for coyotes and 45.5% barrier for black bears). Based on the images, there is evidence that a shock is delivered to the animals that touch the electrified mats and that most of the animals respond by returning to the habitat side of the barrier. Specifically for bears, if it was not for the electrified barriers, likely at least 3 black bears and 1 grizzly bear would have crossed into the fenced road corridor where they would have been exposed to vehicles.

Water is the major limiting factor in agriculture and stomata, composed of two guard cells and the pore they circumscribe, are the chief gates controlling plants’ water loss. The prevailing century old paradigm was that sugars act as an osmoticum in guard cells, contributing to the opening of the stomata. In contrast, we discovered that sugars close stomata and the closure is mediated by the sugar-sensing enzyme hexokinase (HXK) that triggers the abscisic acid (ABA)-signaling pathway within the guard cells. This new discovery suggests a sugar-sensing mechanism within guard cells that controls stomatal closure, and supports the existence of a stomatal feedback mechanism that coordinates photosynthesis with transpiration.
