Resumo:

Learning in groups is a common feature of science classrooms. The three articles I have chosen to feature in this installment of Current Insights reflect recent research of group learning at different scales. The first examines within-group dynamics, identifying interactions among students that allow scientific sense-making discussions to begin and continue. The second proposes to study groups as the unit of analysis, asking why some groups are able to persevere in the face of challenging problems. The third considers the potential for learning to occur between groups, through connections in students’ extended social networks. Each brings new ideas and questions to the study of group learning.

Methods. The results were obtained through the use of the following methods: theorization - when formulating research hypotheses and describing the results of their practical compliance with behavioral and situational theories of leadership, questionnaires – when assessing the attitude of respondents both to their own ability to be a leader and to important leadership qualities from their point of view; analysis – when determining the correspondence of the obtained results of the questionnaire of respondents to the formulated scientific hypothesis; synthesis – when summarizing research results and evaluating the impact of leadership on group dynamics within the organization. Results. The hypothesis about the readiness of people to take on responsibility and the role of a leader was confirmed. It was found that the leader's communication skills and public speaking skills are just as important for his followers as his willingness to demonstrate their personal behavior of commitment to the practical achievement of common goals. The hypothesis about the determining role of common values for the recognition of the leader by his followers was not confirmed. The assumption that the most important characteristic of a leader is the vision of the future was not confirmed. Novelty. In the course of study, it was found that the majority of respondents have a democratic style of leadership, namely a consultative one. It was determined that the leader's perception is largely determined by external manifestations of behavior, in particular, oratory skills, the ability to listen to people, a confident appearance and other behavioral patterns that demonstrate the leader's willingness to serve the common interests of the group. Practical value. Since leaders to the greatest extent determine group dynamics within organizations, influencing the formation, development and decline of formal and informal groups, it is necessary to take into account the risks of followers’ losing the ability to think critically and objectively evaluate leaders’ actions.

Resumo:

This study aims to find out : (1) the dynamics of farmer groups in Netpala Village, North Mollo District, South Central Timor District, (2) the constraints faced by farmer group members in applying the dynamics of farmer group elements in Netpala Village, North Mollo Subdistrict South Central Timor District. The research method used is a survey method. The location of the sample was determined by purposive sampling in the village of Netpala. The research population is all farmers who are members of farmer groups in Netpala Village, and the sample of farmer was taken proportionate random sampling from 110 farmers from five farmer groups, therefor obtained 52 farmers. The analysis used in this study was a qualitative descriptive analysis and a Likert scale. The results showed the majority of respondents in productive age were 46 (88.46%) of formal education was low 22 (44.23%), non-formal education was classified as high where there were 44 (84.61%). The average dynamics level of the eight elements of farmer group dynamics in the Netpala village is dynamic (69%), the dynamics level of group goals is quite dynamic (62%), group structure is dynamic (88%), the structure of task functions is dynamic (100%) %), the structure of group development and group development is dynamic (67%), the compact group structure is dynamic (85%), the structure of the group atmosphere has the same score (50%), the pressure structure of the group is quite dynamic (44%), the structure group effectiveness is classified as dynamic (100%). Constraints faced with the eight elements of group dynamics, group goals (61%), group structure (11%), coaching and group development (30%), group cohesiveness (15%), group atmosphere (50%), group pressure (55%), group effectiveness (0%) or no feedback.

Resumo:

This research aims to identify the dynamics of Maesaan Waya Agriculture group which was studied by group dynamics elements namely the purpose of the group, the structure of the group, the building and the developing of the group, the unity of the group and the effectivity of the group. This research was conducted from October 2016 to April 2017 on Maesaan Waya Agriculture group in Manembo Village, South Langowan Subdistrict. The collecting of the data included primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected by direct interview using questionnaire with agriculture group members who were become respondents. The total number of respondents in this research is 20 respondents. The secondary data were collected from research-related literatures. Descriptive analysing was the method in data analyzing. The result of this research shows that the dynamics of Maesaan Waya agriculture group is categorized as dynamic with 80% valuation percentage. This is because the elements of group dynamics in Maesaan Waya agriculture group run well. Even though the elements of group dynamics run well, there was 20% dynamics elements categorized as less-dynamic.

Resumo:

The view regarding social units as entities in their own right disappeared from scientific consideration in the mid-twentieth century as much for political and ideological reasons as scientific ones. Yet group psychotherapy rediscovered these ideas. The problem to re-establish them scientifically is lack of empirical methodology for investigating whole groups.
The study integrated theories of groups as psychic entities from sociology, social psychology and group psychotherapy to form hypotheses about therapeutic groups" functioning. Four dimensions of whole-group function were derived: Structure, Cognitive Organisation, Affect, and Action Coherence. An observational instrument, the "Group Function Record," was developed, categories defined for each dimension and a procedure established to rate minute-by-minute group function from videotaped psychotherapy groups. Therapists" Interventions were also recorded. The instrument treats the group as the object of study and quality of collective functioning is rated irrespective of members present or their roles. Reliability was established and ratings were made of one latency and four adolescent yearlong groups.
Results substantiated an eight-phase developmental sequence derived from the group development literature and outlined a theory of group formation. The most challenging, but creative state was found to be when the group is whole with all members in communication, though it is unstable and often managed by breaking into subgroups. A linear relation existed showing that the smaller the group, the better it functions. Groups also function best with one or two members missing, but more absentees threaten the group’s existence. More highly organized groups are more stable, but tend to destabilize when they become self-reflective. Homeostatic self-correcting tendencies and a close relationship between affective and action changes were evident. Change towards unpleasurable affect is associated with change from cooperation to conflict and vice versa. Crises tend to be precipitated by affective change, but correct themselves within the next minute or two. The effects of Therapists" Interventions towards members, the group or both were analyzed. Group interventions initially tend to reduce functionality, followed by improvement after several minutes; member interventions have inconsistent effects; interventions to group and members in the same minute tend to produce immediate improved function.
The findings and their implications for therapeutic goals and technique with adolescents are discussed in relation to the theoretical background. Considerable merit is found in the collective mentality theories, many of whose postulates are validated. Indications for therapeutic technique are outlined from the findings. The method provides a different view of group process posing new questions and suggesting simple techniques are therapeutically potent. Further avenues of research are suggested.

Additionally, this approach allows for exploration of decision making processes in real time by utilizing audio analysis techniques that can provide a more dynamic and integrative view of conversations and discussions as they relate to the dialogue and debate that goes on within top management teams, as well as providing an alternate pathway of study for top management team and group research, decision making studies, and the fields of communication and conversational analysis.

This thesis examines the impact of leaders’ personal performance and prototypicality on their ability to champion a social identity by advancing shared group interests. With this in mind, general theories of leadership and followership are reviewed as well as theories of leaders’ performance more specifically. As a framework for understanding leaders’ role in managing shared identity, we then discuss the social identity approach and its application to the field of leadership. In three studies (Chapter 3), we examine the interactive effect of leaders’ prototypicality and personal performance on followers’ evaluations of their leadership. Studies 1 and 2 show that the impact of leaders’ performance on followers’ favourable reactions to their leadership (in terms of group advancement, trust in the leader, and leader endorsement) is more pronounced when leaders are prototypical, rather than non-prototypical, of followers’ ingroup. Study 3 provides evidence from the field that this interaction between performance and prototypicality also impacts on followers’ perceptions of leader charisma. Moreover, there is evidence that this impact can be explained, in part, by the degree to which followers perceive leaders to advance shared group interests. Results suggest that highly prototypical leaders who display elevated, rather than average, performance are responded to more favourably because their performance is perceived to advance a shared social identity. Although our first three studies demonstrate that we can disentangle leaders’ performance and prototypicality in order to examine their interactive effects, this does not mean that these two things are independent. Studies 4-6 (Chapter 4) provide evidence from the field and the laboratory that followers associate the performance of leaders with their prototypicality. A field study indicates that followers’ perceptions of leader performance and prototypicality are indeed positively related (Study 4). Moreover, experiments suggest that while followers infer a leader’s prototypicality from his or her performance (Study 5), their evaluation of a leader’s performance is also influenced by his or her prototypicality (Study 6). Studies 5 and 6 also indicate that leaders’ performance and prototypicality determine their capacity to engage in identity entrepreneurship by changing ingroup norms and ideals. In this way, results suggest that leader performance and prototypicality are not only bidirectionally related but are also important factors that contribute to a leader’s capacity to craft present and future understandings of a social identity. In the third empirical chapter (Chapter 5), we examine the impact of evaluators’ status as either internal or external to a group on assessments of leader prototypicality and performance. Study 7 shows that compared to external evaluators, internal evaluators are more likely to perceive highly prototypical low-performing leaders to advance the group more than low-prototypical high-performing leaders. Study 8 also demonstrates that internal (but not external) evaluators perceive highly prototypical leaders as more likely to advance the group compared to their moderately prototypical counterparts. Results suggest that these differential evaluations are primarily attributable to internal evaluators’ increased responsiveness to prototypicality such that they are less willing than external evaluators to forgo leaders’ prototypicality in exchange for their outstanding performance. Taken together, the thesis supports a complex model in which leader effectiveness is determined by followers’ appreciation of leaders’ prototypicality and performance against the backdrop of their perceived capacity to realize shared goals and ambitions. The present thesis extends theories that emphasize the importance of leaders’ exceptional performance. It shows that leaders’ extraordinary capability is of limited value if they fail to demonstrate their alignment with followers. In successful leadership these two go together such that leaders must be seen to promote ‘our’ ambitions and to be able to realize them. Theoretical implications for leadership theories and practical implications for organizational practices are discussed.

Role theory is generally presented as a way of describing human interactions. Role dynamics describes the psychosocial phenomenon in terms of the various roles and role components being played and actively manipulated as a part of interpersonal interactions. The concept of role offers a general unit of interaction involving a complex of behaviour, expectation, and overt or covert consensual agreement. Therefore, roles can be thought of as expectations one has about social behaviour and as functions or positions. Groups are fundamental to human behaviour - without them individuals would have great difficulty surviving. People thrive on the interdependent relationships they find in groups. In some groups you participate as a leader, while in others you assume the role of follower. In many ways, the groups you have chosen to join reflect your interests and what motivates you. Group dynamics refers to the interactions within a group that characterize the group. The dynamics of the group can be fostered through good leadership as well, and the processes involved are most effective when they facilitate the group toward meeting its goal. The concept of leadership is a central building block of the conventional wisdom of organization and management. The definition of leadership leads to a variety of possibilities, which leads to the conclusion that the definition of leadership should depend on the purposes to be Served by the definition. One complex definition that has evolved, delineates effective leadership as the interaction among members of a group that initiates and maintains improved expectations and the competence of the group to solve problems or to attain goals. A general weakness of higher education has been its inability or unwillingness to make constructive and consistent use of student leadership as an advocate for the institution. From the perspective of student leadership, the fact that student advocacy is rarely utilized to its full potential represents a significant missed opportunity among our nation's universities. If the potential for leadership among these students were systematically cultivated, a new and powerful voice could be created that would go far in helping universities explain their missions and needs to lawmakers, the media and the voting public. Little research has been reported on student organizations. Literature involving student organizations dealt with the role organizations play in student involvement and student development. Reported research on the use of organization development in university student organizations described new practices, programmes and techniques for working with student organizations but did not reflect attempts to measure the effectiveness of interventions. This research provides readers with additional opportunities to explore the characteristics of effective groups and leaders and the leadership process. It is intended to move student leaders beyond the theory of leadership and closer to the world of practice and application. The major objectives of the study are: 0 How effectively and autonomously do student councils function as groups at tertiary institutions and how prepared are the members of the student councils to assume the leadership role? Are there statistical significant differences between biographical variables and the variables of group effectiveness, autonomy and leadership? Is there a relationship between group effectiveness, autonomy and leadership? The research study is divided into a theoretical and empirical framework. Various aspects of role theory, groups and leadership outline the theoretical basis. The empirical study is carried out by way of a questionnaire and the data is analysed according to specific statistical methods. The empirical study was conducted amongst members of student councils at different tertiary institutions in South Africa. The major findings of the study supported the set of research objectives and were the following: Group effectiveness It has been determined that most student councils at tertiary institutions in the study population are aware of their mission, are satisfied with achieving their goals, take possession, communicate openly and honest with members and have clear roles and norms. Autonomy Most of the student councils at tertiary institutions in the study population have satisfactory autonomy regarding work methods, work scheduling and work criteria. Leadership Student councils at tertiary institutions in the study population are prepared to assume their leadership roles. Differences between biographical variables and group effectiveness, autonomy and leadership Perceivable differences between gender and leadership in the student councils at tertiary institutions in the study population exist but are of no statistical significance. The relationship between the subvariables of group effectiveness, autonomy and leadership It has been determined that there is a relationship between the subvariables of group effectiveness and autonomy. No practical statistic significance relationships have been determined between leadership and autonomy for the study population. Further research on leadership as a process of group dynamics is recommended.

The study intended to understand the mechanism of group dynamics and leadership from a group of teachers designed their own eco-garden teaching materials. There were fifteen teachers participated in this professional development team. Researcher applied qualitative methods such as participant observation, interview, and documents to note down the process of group interactions and exploited the similarities and differences from group members’ responses to a series of related topics were able to depict superior leadership styles and course construction techniques. Eight cultural characteristics and three styles of constructive leadership were induced from this study. They were, on the one hand, well-interacted relationship, detailed and well-organized schedule, multi-layered scenarios, hetero-organization versus homogeneous commitment, meaning making dialogue, well-behaved leader, passionate intra-subjectivity, and challengeable status hierarchy, mainly composed of eight cultural characteristics. On the other hand, equal rights for everybody, perpetually autonomous development of teaching ideas and humane leadership were three styles of constructive leadership. According to the process of developing an eco-curriculum, researcher revealed that the effective learning environment for teachers’ professional development based on the model of” Grounded-Developing-Feedbacking“(GD F). According to the findings above, two conclusions were made: (1) based on the rationale of constructive leadership, teacher professional development could developed autonomously in the school. (2) it is imperative to encourage the whole school stimulating the professional growth climate. This study also provided teachers and educators a reference of the design of the eco-curriculum for elementary schools.

The textbook describes the design features of offshore horizontal multi-hole production wells, as well as the bottom-hole components of horizontal multi-hole wells. The classification of complications of multi-hole horizontal wells, methods of their prevention and elimination are given. Methods of underground geonavigation of the development of offshore horizontal production wells are proposed. The geological and field bases of operation of horizontal offshore multi-hole oil and gas wells, modes and dynamics of oil, gas and associated water production, methods for calculating dynamic bottom-hole and reservoir pressures are specified. The technologies of operation of offshore horizontal multi-hole wells are presented. The composition and scope of environmental, field and research marine monitoring of the operation of offshore horizontal multi-hole wells and the protection of the marine environment in the production of oil and gas are justified. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. It is intended for undergraduates of the enlarged group of "Earth Sciences" training areas, as well as for teachers, employees of the fuel and energy complex, industrial geological exploration and oil and gas production enterprises, scientific and design organizations.

Employing a transregional and interdisciplinary approach, this volume explores indigenous and black confraternities –or lay Catholic brotherhoods– founded in colonial Spanish America and Brazil between the sixteenth and eighteenth century. It presents a varied group of cases of religious confraternities founded by subaltern subjects, both in rural and urban spaces of colonial Latin America, to understand the dynamics and relations between the peripheral and central areas of colonial society, underlying the ways in which colonialized subjects navigated the colonial domain with forms of social organization and cultural and religious practices. The book analyzes indigenous and black confraternal cultural practices as forms of negotiation and resistance shaped by local devotional identities that also transgressed imperial religious and racial hierarchies. The analysis of these practices explores the intersections between ethnic identity and ritual devotion, as well as how the establishment of black and indigenous religious confraternities carried the potential to subvert colonial discourse.

A narrative of decline punctuated by periods of renewal has long structured perceptions of Rome’s late antique and medieval history. In their probing contributions to this volume, a multi-disciplinary group of scholars provides alternative approaches to understanding the period. Addressing developments in governance, ceremony, literature, art, music, clerical education and the construction of the city’s identity, the essays examine how a variety of actors, from poets to popes, productively addressed the intermittent crises and shifting dynamics of these centuries in ways that bolstered the city’s resilience. Without denying that the past (both pre-Christian and Christian) consistently remained a powerful touchstone, the studies in this volume offer rich new insights into the myriad ways that Romans, between the fifth and the eleventh centuries, creatively assimilated the past as they shaped their future.

The book series, edited by Nicoletta Pesaro and sponsored by the Department of Asian and North African Studies, aims to give voice to a time-honoured branch of theoretical and practical research across the disciplines and research domains within the Department. The series aims to establish a platform for scholarly discussion and a space for international dialogue on the translation of Asian and North African languages. In doing so, the project aims to observe and verify the translingual and transcultural dynamics triggered by translation from and into said ‘languages-cultures’, as well as to identify and explore the deep cultural mechanisms and structures involved in interethnic behaviours and relationships. Translation is also a major research tool in the humanities. As a matter of fact, a hermeneutic potential in terms of cultural mediation is inherent in translation activities and in the reflection on translation: it is precisely this potential that allows scholars, in both their research and dissemination work, to bring to the surface the interethnic and intercultural dynamics regulating the relationships between civilisations, both diachronically and synchronically. The project is a continuation and a development of the research carried out in recent years by the former Department of East Asian Studies – now Department of Asian and North African Studies – of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice through a series of initiatives organised by the research group on the translation of Asian languages “Laboratorio sulla Traduzione delle Lingue orientali” (Laboratori sulle lingue orientali). Such activities involved periodical meetings on translation, whose objective was to introduce and discuss specific issues in translation from and into Asian languages, as well as several international events (workshops, conferences, and symposia).

AbstractThe group therapy programme at the Walker Unit uses a multimodal approach including verbal, non-verbal, and physical elements. The programme draws on expertise from a range of professional disciplines. The group programme provides therapeutic clinical intervention rather than activity or distraction-based programmes, providing structure and containment as well as cultivating engagement in the therapeutic process and therapy skill building, navigating interpersonal dynamics. Being in a contained unit, the spaces on the ward are also used to facilitate a therapeutic environment during groups. Toward the end of the admissions adolescents and their families may adopt a similarly structured programme or routine including skills and strategies, to assist with their transition from hospital and maintain therapeutic gains achieved from their admission.

AbstractSmall group work offers the opportunity for students to engage in many-sided discussions. Students can learn how to argue standpoints and develop argumentative competence (i.e. learning to argue) but may also, by using argumentative structures, learn about and tease apart relevant facets of the topic at hand (i.e. arguing to learn). Although these processes can be beneficial for both arguing to learn as well as learning to argue, their success is predicated on the characteristics of the group enacting them. Discussions happen in a social, interpersonal context. Especially in small group collaborative learning, the social relationships between students should have a stronger and more direct impact on the form and content of their contributions than in more direct, teacher-led instruction. In this chapter, we will seek to specify the relations between cognitive and social aspects of collaborative argumentation and illustrate them with an example from the DIALLS lesson recordings.

Sex workers involved in sexual relations with multiple partners are a key group of women who need access to comprehensive sexual health services, including HIV prevention, treatment, and care (Lafort et al. in Reproductive health services for populations at high risk of HIV: performance of a night clinic in Tete province, Mozambique. BMC Health Services Research, 2010, [2]). There are a broad range of sex workers in various locations including those who are street-based and brothel-based, those who work as escorts, and those who work from their own homes.

AbstractThe role of the European Parliament’s (EP) political groups in making the European Union legislative process democratic has been mainly analysed in terms of party-political competition between the groups. In this chapter, we extend questions about democracy to intra-group policy formation and ask, how do political groups formulate group lines on policies and what impact does this have on democratic decision-making in the EP. We approach intra-group policy formation from the perspective of formal and informal democratic practices related to inclusion, deliberation and transparency that influence whose voice is heard. Our analysis is based on extensive interview data as well as the internal rules of the groups, and we pay specific attention to differences between the groups and the political dynamics within them. We argue that intra-group struggles about policy are as important for the democratic functioning of the EP as those between the groups.

AbstractThe established study of political networks has surged with the rise of digital social networks and modern computational analytics. Social Network Analysis (SNA) enables the study of Russia’s hybrid politics and society as it produces accurate alternative content to controlled official and semi-official statistics, providing live and detailed insight into current political processes in the country. Using six resonant political events, the chapter illustrates how SNA methods allow the designation of political communities and support the evaluation of such important questions as the presence of “echo-chambers,” the dynamic tracing of group reactions to informational events, and the detection of leaders and influencers. These methods provide a framework for the analysis of political phenomena as astroturfing and botnets, opinion mining, as well as topic and sentiment analysis.

AbstractBiological groups exhibit fascinating collective dynamics without centralised control, through only local interactions between individuals. Desirable group behaviours are typically linked to a certain fitness function, which the group robustly performs under different perturbations in, for instance, group structure, group size, noise, or environmental factors. Deriving this fitness function is an important step towards understanding the collective response, yet it easily becomes non-trivial in the context of complex collective dynamics. In particular, understanding the social feedback - how the collective behaviour adapts to changes in the group size - requires dealing with complex models and limited experimental data. In this work, we assume that the collective response is experimentally observed for a chosen, finite set of group sizes. Based on such data, we propose a framework which allows to: (i) predict the collective response for any given group size, and (ii) automatically propose a fitness function. We use Smoothed Model Checking, an approach based on Gaussian Process Classification, to develop a methodology that is scalable, flexible, and data-efficient; We specify the fitness function as a template temporal logic formula with unknown parameters, and we automatically infer the missing quantities from data. We evaluate the framework over a case study of a collective stinging defence mechanism in honeybee colonies.

Multirotor UAS spanning Groups 3 and 4 have received increased attention as candidates for tactical resupply missions due to their VTOL capability and payload capacity. The objective of this work is to better understand how the parameters of multicopter UAS flight dynamics models scale with size in support of expanding the Army's unmanned aerial reconnaissance capability. A family of coaxial multirotor UAS spanning Groups 2 and 3 have been flight tested to gather data for flight dynamics modeling and validation. These UAS consist of the TRV-80, TRV-150, and the subscale Eagle platform. A series of test points including static stability, trim shot, frequency sweeps, doublets, and maximum climb rate maneuvers were collected. Wind data was simultaneously collected using a 3-axis ultrasonic anemometer to characterize wind conditions and characteristics during testing. Flight data were collected in varying payload configurations ranging from 0-120 pounds and at flight conditions ranging from hover to 50 knots. Point state space models were identified from frequency sweeps and verified using doublet time histories. Point models of the TRV-150 were combined with trim data and experimentally measured moments of inertia to develop a stitched simulation model. The stitched model was used to extrapolate for the flight tested off-nominal payload configurations for analysis. The unstable roll and pitch hover eigenvalues between the vehicles within the TRV family and smaller Group 1-2 UAS were analyzed and compared to Froude-scaled results to establish trends based on vehicle aspect ratio.

This work aims to investigate the impacts and reflexes caused by the use of psychoactive substances on the inmates of a Recovery Center. The initial aim is to highlight the effects and scope of drugs in the lives of users, as well as the importance of group dynamics as an intervention tool in the process of permanence, rehabilitation and social reintegration of inmates. To this end, this study was carried out in two phases: expository bibliographical research and field research. The first used articles indexed in the SciELO, PePSIC and GOOGLE PESQUISA databases, as well as Lewin Kurt's theoretical notes and David Cohen's (2014) theoretical postulates on Freud's research into cocaine and the reference work by Eliane Regina Pereira and Bader Burihan Sawaia (2020) on Group Practices: Space for Dialogue and Power. The second instrument for data collection was the systematic and descriptive observation of what was said by inmates at a user coexistence center, exclusively for people with drug addiction and homeless people.

The design studio has been practiced as a key deliverable mechanism in architectural education. This study is aiming on exploring the group dynamics of architectural students within the design studio environment. For this study researchers have used naturalistic observation and focus group interviews as key data collection methodologies. For this, 30 design students participated and they were divided in to six groups. The students’ level of collaboration was explored and recorded by the researchers throughout three studio days with the engagement of eighteen studio hours. The results were analysed by six phased thematic analysis and the results have been contributed on developing group dynamics models of each group type. We have observed the group dynamism with in the groups and the results depicted four major dynamics such as Collaborative, multiple leadership dynamism, Leader centric, leader dominant dynamism, Virtually active, physically passive dynamism and Grouping within the group. The study has shown the patterns of engagement and how it could affect to the collaborative group behaviour.

This paper presents a study of the dynamic response of actuation devices used in mechanical systems with nonlinear dynamics such as robot manipulators. The study shows that the actuation forces/torques provided by actuation devices can be divided into two basic groups. The first group corresponds to the components of each actuator force/torque that is “actuator motion independent”. The dynamic response of this group is relatively high and limited only by the dynamic response limitations — for the case of electrically driven actuation systems — of the driving power amplifiers, electronics, computational and signal processing devices and components. The second group corresponds to those components of the actuator forces/torques that is “actuator motion dependent”. The dynamic response of this group is relatively low and dependent on the actuator effective inertial load and actuation speed. In all mechanical systems that are properly designed, the dynamic response of the first group is significantly higher than those of the second group. By separating the required actuating forces/torques into the above two groups, the dynamic response of such nonlinear dynamics systems may be determined for a given synthesized trajectory. The information can also be used to significantly increase the performance of control systems of such mechanical systems. When a feed-forward control signal is used, the performance of the system is shown to be significantly improved by generating each one of the group of components separately considering the dynamic response of the actuation system to each one of the groups of components. An example and practical methods of implementing the proposed feed-forward control for nonlinear dynamics systems are provided.

Cost estimation is often performed by a group. We examined what decision theorists have to say about group decision-making, and observed seven groups as they discussed their estimates for a small project. We found that personalities had more to do with confidence and consensus on an estimative than did expertise or years of experience.

Abstract "A group process can sensitize each subject in its uniqueness, and bring about interesting transformations in their everyday relationships - with themselves, with others, with the world." (SAMEA, 2008, p. 89). Thus, the group can add to its participants new experiences, providing new perceptions about everything that involves this subject. "The group space enables the contact and recognition of one's own doing, its limits and facilities; the observation of the other's doing, the perception of similarities and contrasts, and the potentialization of doing together." (SAMEA, 2008, p. 88). Thus, this paper seeks to present the course of the discipline "Group Dynamics and Body Activities" and point out the possibilities of using the group as a powerful resource for intervention in various professions.

In this paper, we describe the use of visualization of system dynamics models as client information and management tools. System dynamics is a methodology for analyzing and understanding how complex systems change over time. System dynamic models have been developed for a broad range of information to client applications - from resource management problems to the mapping of stocks and flows on factory floors. The problem faced by many users of system dynamic models is their graphic complexity for users not trained in the field. This paper addresses new research into visualization of system dynamics models to make client information more efficient and accessible. This research involves the use of narrative, video and sound embedded in statistical material. This paper also considers one particular client group - that of politicians, planners and civil society in developing countries.

This Research Brief explores the implications of armed group hierarchies on the reintegration pathways of formerly armed actors (FAAs). It highlights how ranks within armed groups significantly shape key determinants of succesful reintegration, such as skill sets, financial security, traumatic exposure, and access to networks post-demobilisation and how reintegration programmes often entrench disparities between higher and lower ranking FAAs. By comparing dynamics within state-sponsored militaries and across centralised and decentralised non-state armed groups (NSAGs), the Research Brief advocates for nuanced strategies that recognise the complex interplay of network dynamics and hierarchies on FAA positionalities after demobilisation to foster more equitable reintegration outcomes for FAAs. Additionally, this brief includes a quadrant graphic offering an assessment of different FAA reintegration scenarios based on hierarchies, centralisation, and reintegration programming strength.

This policy report outlines the group research on advocacy, decision-making, and EU policy change towards green energy transition and climate neutrality, focusing on resource- and energy-efficient buildings, as well as energy efficiency more broadly within the EU's Fit for 55 legislative packages. The research also includes analyses of advocacy and decision-making related to EU policy change for decarbonizing maritime shipping. The project explores how stakeholder coalitions shape policies for sustainable environments since decision-making is influenced by stakeholders and conflicts of interest. By providing better insight into EU policy change dynamics, this report offers valuable knowledge that can enhance policymakers' understanding of how to influence future EU policies on energy efficiency and building energy performance, as well as a clean energy transition more broadly, promoting Swedish interests. It highlights the complexity of decision-making in energy efficiency and climate impact reduction within the EU while also underscoring the influence of stakeholders and conflicts of interest. As a result, actors with inadequate grasp of political dynamics can hinder effective energy policy design and implementation, posing challenges to achieving climate goals and sustainable development. Similarly, since negotiations are key to advance regulation, it is found that less politicization and polarization facilitate deliberative negotiations and policy-oriented learning, among other things. Thus, strategic advocacy is crucial for Swedish policymakers aiming to successfully influence future EU energy and climate policies.

In this paper,we analyze the tail-dependence structure of credit default swaps (CDS) and the global financial cycle for a group of eleven emerging markets. Using a Copula-CoVaR model,we provide evidence that there is a significant taildependence between variables related with the global financial cycle, such as the VIX, and emerging market CDS. These results are particularly important in the context of distressed global financial markets (right tail of the distributions of the VIX) because they provide international investors with relevant information on how to rebalance their portfolios and a more suitable metric to analyze sovereign risk that goes beyond the traditional CoVaR. Additionally, we present further evidence supporting the importance of the global financial cycle in sovereign risk dynamics.

This research report is a case study of women’s participation in community-based armed groups (CBAGs) in Kenya. It examines: the diversity of women’s motivations to participate in community-based armed groups in Kenya; women’s roles and agency within community-based armed groups, communal conflicts, as well as community security and peacebuilding structures; and gender dynamics in conflict ecosystems, including social perceptions about women’s engagement in conflict. This case study contributes to the literature on women and CBAGs by examining the variations in their engagement across a single country, based on diverse local contexts. Data collection sites for the study included 1) the capital city, Nairobi; 2) Isiolo County; 3) Marsabit County; 4) Mombasa County; and 5) Bungoma County. Together, these sites provide insight into local conflict dynamics in rural and urban areas; on country borders and on the coast; and in communities with ethnic polarization, land conflicts, criminal gangs, and histories of violent extremism and secessionist movements. The Kenyan research team employed a qualitative approach to data collection through key informant interviews (KIIs), focus group discussions (FGDs), and the use of secondary source data. The findings show that there is no single template for understanding women’s engagement with CBAGs; instead, women’s motivations and roles within these groups are varied and highly contextual, just as with the motivations and roles of men. This study demonstrates the utility of context-specific analyses at the sub-national level to capture the range of women’s participation in and engagement with CBAGs and their greater contributions to the local security landscape.

We exploit the staggered expansion of the internet broadband network to firms and bank branches locations in Peru during the last decade to study non-financial firm performance and bank credit dynamics. Access to broadband unleashes firm growth, increases the chances of entry of firms and reduces the probability of exit in benefited locations. For those firms that had a borrowing relation with a bank before the expansion of broadband, the increase in sales serves as a signal to banks about their profitability, which in turn respond by providing more credit. Entry and exit from the credit market follows a similar pattern as in the case of firms, but the results take longer to materialize after the shock. We can disentangle supply and demand effects, since there is a group of firms and bank branches with different locations and asymmetrical timing for the availability of the technology. Our analysis highlights the importance of the demand channel in the reduction of the observed interest rates, which is consistent with the fact that our credit market results are concentrated among micro and small firms, and firms with thin credit files, which are often perceived as riskier.

This paper poses a different lens on informal social protection (ISP). ISP is generally understood as practices of livelihood support among individuals. While studies have explored the social dynamics of such, they rarely do so beyond the conceptual space of informalities and poverty. For instance, they discuss aspects of inclusion, incentives and disincentives, efficiency and adequacy. This provides important insights on whether and to what extent these practices provide livelihood support and for whom. However, doing so in part disregards the socio-political context within which support practices take place. This paper therefore introduces the lens of between-group inequality through the Black Tax narrative. It draws on unique mixed method data of 205 personal support networks of Namibian adults. The results show how understanding these practices beyond the lens of informal social protection can provide important insights on how economic inequality resonates in support relationships, which in turn can play a part in reproducing the inequalities to which they respond.

The civil war in the Republic of Sudan, which began in April 2023, has fuelled and exacerbated an already severe humanitarian crisis. As of September 2024, over 25 million people – half the country’s population – need assistance. In response, grassroots movements have emerged, drawing on past experiences of collective mobilisation. Volunteer networks, known as Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs), in which the ‘room’ refers to the online group chats where they were originally conceived and planned, are one example. This brief is based on the first case study of ERRs,1 which was conducted between June and August 2024. Building on interviews with volunteers, the case study highlights the perspectives of ERR volunteers and details the emergence, growth, workflows and partnerships of ERRs. The brief further draws on published research exploring the complexities of the humanitarian response in Sudan and the concept of mutual aid, including ERRs. The aim of the brief is to describe key considerations for understanding ERRs and how they might be supported. The brief also explores the implications of meaningful and locally impactful partnerships with national and international humanitarian and development actors (IHDAs), even amidst complex humanitarian dynamics and acute conflict. The brief has been written for all actors following or engaged in the Sudan response – local, national and international.

In late 2020, CLARISSA undertook scoping studies and literature reviews into supply chain/human chain/urban neighbourhood dynamics in Kathmandu, and their impact on worst forms of child labour (WFCL). To address the evidence gaps identified, the team developed a research framing for exploring in greater detail how small Adult Entertainment Sector (AES) businesses were being run – exploring factors such as managing seasonality, relationships between informal and formal businesses, loans and debts carried by small businesses, and business norms in the sector – and how these factors can perpetuate WFCL. Twenty-five AES business owners running dohoris, dance bars, khaja ghars (small eateries), and massage and spa venues were then interviewed, and the findings were analysed and validated by business owners. The next step was the formation of three Action Research Groups (ARGs) with AES business owners, to undertake further evidence gathering and then formulate and deliver actions and innovations to reduce WFCL. It was decided that one ARG, the focus of this report, would focus on owners of dohoris and dance bars. The chosen location for the group is a major entry point into Kathmandu from the eastern side of Kathmandu Valley, and this has led to a large number of new AES businesses being set up.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a deeply entrenched cultural practice involving the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is recognised as a severe violation of human rights. Worldwide, four million girls are subjected to this practice each year, with four in ten FGM survivors living in fragile and conflict-affected countries.1 The practice of FGM is addressed in UN Sustainable Development Goal 5.3. This goal aims to eliminate all harmful practices including FGM and child, early, and forced marriage by 2030 – including among those living in crisis-affected areas and/or those forcibly displaced. Countries hosting refugees, asylum-seekers and other migrants must ensure that national strategies to address FGM are relevant and appropriate to the diverse populations that countries have a responsibility to protect. These strategies must also consider additional vulnerabilities such populations may have, related to conflict and displacement. This SSHAP Brief focuses on the context of FGM for Sudanese populations in Egypt who currently make up the largest group of forcibly displaced people (refugees, asylum-seekers and undocumented migrants) there since the escalation of armed conflict in Sudan in April 2023. Both Egypt and Sudan have some of the highest rates of FGM in the world. This brief reviews the FGM context and anti-FGM programming developments in both countries. It considers the drivers and dynamics of FGM practices in the context of forced displacement to inform culturally sensitive strategies for FGM prevention and response for forcibly displaced Sudanese people in Egypt. It draws on academic and grey literature as well as consultations with experts working with affected populations in Egypt.
