A new family of eremoneuran Brachycera, the Chimeromyiidae, is proposed for two genera and eight species of a distinctive, monophyletic group of flies in 125–100 myo amber. The new family is related to the Empidoidea and basal Cyclorrhapha. Four new species of Chimeromyia are described: C. pilitibia Grimaldi and Cumming (in Lebanese amber), C. mediobscura Grimaldi and Cumming, C. alava Arillo and Grimaldi (in Spanish amber), and C. burmitica Grimaldi and Cumming (in Burmese amber). A new genus, Chimeromyina Arillo and Grimaldi is also described, for a primitive new species C. concilia (in Spanish amber). New details of these flies are described, particularly of male and female terminalia, and the relationships between this and other eremoneuran families are discussed.

The proctotrupoid wasp family Pelecinidae (Proctotrupomorpha: Proctotrupoidea) is recorded in Early Cretaceous amber for the first time, previous amber inclusions being from the Late Cretaceous or Tertiary. Zoropelecinus zigrasi Engel & Grimaldi, new genus and species, is described and figured from an exquisitely preserved female in Albian-Cenomanian amber from Myanmar. The genus is similar to other fossil pelecinids of the genera Pelecinopteron Brues (Paleogene ambers of the Baltic and Siberia) and Henopelecinus Engel & Grimaldi (Turonian amber, New Jersey). Although two subfamilies have at times been recognized (or even as two families) the Iscopininae are clearly paraphyletic with respect to Pelecininae and therefore of no classificatory value and accordingly synonymized herein (new synonymy).

Specimens of Opisthoteuthis grimaldii were video recorded in a shipboard aquarium and their behavioural traits, such as bottom resting, flat-spreading, web-inversion and ballooning response, were described. Ballooning, as defence response, has been recorded only for cirrate octopod families with an intermediate web (Cirroteuthidae: Stauroteuthidae), and this structure has been supposed to be essential for developing this behaviour. Members of the Opisthoteuthidae family lack an intermediate web, indicating that this is a common defence response in cirrates, expressed in a basic form in the Opisthoteuthidae, offering an illustration of how this behaviour can evolve.

The family Blaberidae is diverse, including large wingless, brachypterous, or fully winged species. Wings of the fully winged species have many-branched veins and reach beyond the apex of the abdomen. Some species are smaller and green in color. These cockroaches are more than 40mm long; species have front femora with 1 to 3 spines on the ventroposterior margin and 1 at the tip; and lack arolia. The females of Blaberidae possess a brood sac, wherein the ootheca or loose eggs are retained until the eggs hatch (ovoviviparity). The phylogeny of roach families was explored by McKittrick (1964), Grandcolas (1994, 1996), Kambhampati (1996) and Klass (1997, 1998, 2001) (Grimaldi & Engel, 2004). We update knowledge of five species of Blaberidae from Brazil, based on a literature review and examination of the Blattaria collection in the Department of Entomology at the Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (MNRJ).

AbstractAn extensive review of cephalopod fauna in the Central and North Atlantic coast of Africa was performed based on material collected during 10 research cruises in these waters. In the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME) area, a total of 378,377 cephalopod specimens was collected from 1247 bottom trawl stations. Of those specimens, 300 were sampled for subsequent identification in the laboratory and found to belong to 65 different species and 23 families. After an exhaustive review of the existing literature on the cephalopods and new data obtained from the surveys, an updated checklist of 138 species was generated for the CCLME area. Our knowledge of the known geographic distribution ranges of several species has been expanded: Muusoctopus januarii has been sighted from Guinea–Bissau waters, passing through Western Sahara, to Morocco waters for the first time; Lepidoteuthis grimaldii and Octopus salutii have been sighted off Morocco waters for the first time; Austrorossia mastigophora, Abralia (Heterabralia) siedleckyi, Abralia (Pygmabralia) redfieldi and Sepiola atlantica have been cited off Western Sahara waters for the first time; Magnoteuthis magna, Abralia (Asteroteuthis) veranyi and Octopoteuthis megaptera have been sighted off Moroccan and Western Sahara waters for the first time; Ancistroteuthis lichtensteinii, Opisthoteuthis grimaldii, Onykia robsoni, Muusoctopus levis and Bathypolypus valdiviae have been cited in the Guinea–Bissau coast for the first time; the northern geographic limit of Bathypolypus ergasticus has been expanded to Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania and southward to Guinea–Bissau waters. The presence of Muusoctopus johnsonianus in Senegalese waters has been reported for the first time. A Chtenopteryx sicula specimen was reported in Western Sahara waters. A specimen belonging to the poorly known Cirrothauma murrayi species was found in South Moroccan waters. Amphitretus pelagicus, a probably cosmopolitan species, has been reported in the Western Sahara and Guinea–Bissau waters. Some species that were previously recorded in the area, Sepia angulata, Sepia hieronis, Heteroteuthis dagamensis, Helicocranchia joubini and Tremoctopus gelatus, were removed from the final checklist and considered to be not present in the CCLME area. Cycloteuthis akimushkini was substituted with Cycloteuthis sirventi, its senior synonym, in the final checklist. Similarly, Mastigoteuthis flammea and Mastigoteuthis grimaldii were substituted with Mastigoteuthis agassizii.

The distribution of deep-water (150–4850 m) benthic and bentho–pelagic cephalopods in the north-east Atlantic is described, based on 592 specimens collected from commercial and research trawling. Thirty-six different species of cephalopod belonging to 14 families were identified, though problems remain with the taxonomy of some of the octopod genera. At the shallower depths (150–500 m) sepiolids were the most abundant group with five species identified. Sepiola atlantica, Sepietta oweniana and Rondeletiola minor were restricted to the shallow depths (<300 m), but Neorossia caroli (400–1535 m) and Rossia macrosoma (205–515 m) extended into deeper water. The squids Todaropsis eblanae and Loligo forbesi were also common in shallow areas (<250 m). Among the incirrate octopods, Eledone cirrhosa was found at depths of 208–490 m. Three putative species of Benthoctopus and two of Bathypolypus were identified occupying depths of 250–2700 m. Graneledoneverrucosa was caught at depths of 1785–2095 m. Cirrate octopods dominated the cephalopod catch from the deeper areas, with Opisthoteuthis massyae occurring from 877 to 1398 m, O. grimaldii from 2165 to 2287 m, Stauroteuthissyrtensis from 1425 to 3100 m, Cirroteuthismuelleri from 700 to 4854 m, Cirrothauma murrayi from 2430 to 4850 m and Grimpoteuthis (five putative species) from 1775 to 4877 m. Abundance estimates of the more frequently caught species were calculated from swept areas of trawls and sledges in the Porcupine Seabight and on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain.

The third quarter of the seventeenth century brought considerable changes in the social composition of theatre audiences in Italy. Gone was the exclusiveness of the ducal and academy theatres whose audiences of royalty and nobility attended by invitation only. These were replaced by an audience of a growing bourgeoisie with an ability to pay. As soon as this audience appeared entrepreneurs, quick to recognize the possibilities, opened public playhouses. Theatrical activities became a commercial rather than an artistic, intellectual or political enterprise. Although some vestiges of the past, such as the royal box for important dignitaries, were retained, public theatres soon assumed a more democratic aspect, patronized by audiences who had earned the right to attend by means of personal enterprise rather than by accident or privilege of birth. Foremost in this phenomenon was the city of Venice whose theatrical activities soon became the model. Mercantile families like the Tron, Grimani, Giustinian and Vendramini opened the first public playhouses in the 1630s. Audiences of courtiers and courtesans, Dukes and Doges, Princes and panderers, merchants and magistrates soon became involved in a social mix that would have amazed and scandalised the more formal audiences of earlier times.

The revolutions of 1848 shook the Principality of Monaco. After seceding, Menton and Roquebrune became part of France in 1861, in exchange for financial compensation and road access. More than ever reduced to a confetti state, but now free from any protectorate, the Principality regained real independence at a time when the trend was towards national unifications. But to be viable, the small country needed to be rebuilt. The rebuilding was first and foremost economic, as demonstrated by the boom in winter tourism. It was also diplomatic, and Monaco, like any traditional power, endeavoured to become part of the "concert of nations" by developing consular and diplomatic representations and signing treaties. It was also an institutional overhaul, supported by the construction of a state apparatus, which led to the granting of a constitution in 1911. Finally, it was a cultural revival, of which the Monte-Carlo Opera, Monaco's participation in Universal Exhibitions and Prince Albert I's personal involvement in the Sciences are the most remarkable examples. For the Princes of Monaco, it was a question of asserting a fragile sovereignty, since it was not based on commercial or military power. While multiplying the legal and symbolic attributes of power, they developed a brilliant social life, as well as a court life designed to serve as a relay and quench their thirst for representation. From a personal point of view, in this context of change, the challenge for Charles III and Albert I was not only to consolidate their regime, but also to maintain their position

The most powerful Venetian cardinals in the sixteenth century were arguably those stemming from the Grimani family. This chapter presents a detailed analysis of the MS Morosini Grimani 270 in the Biblioteca del Museo Correr in Venice, focusing on drawings that illustrate the appointment of Grimani cardinals, alongside their portraits. The iconographic derivation of these drawings from existing works of art will be explored through comparison with painted portraits and other visual representations of the Grimani cardinals, some previously unidentified. The possible function of the included cardinal portraits, and the historical scenes relating to them will be investigated, considering the role of images of cardinals within the dynastic strategies and histories of certain families.
