The English comparative correlative construction (e.g., The more you eat, the fatter you get) embeds like an ordinary CP, and each of its clauses displays an ordinary long-distance dependency. However, the connection between the two clauses is not ordinary: they are connected paratactically in syntax, but the first clause is interpreted as if it were a subordinate clause. The construction's mixture of the general and the idiosyncratic at all levels of detail challenges the distinction between “core” and “periphery” in grammar and the assumption that some level of underlying syntax directly mirrors semantic structure.

The aim of this paper was to find out the relationship between semantics and syntax through pragmatic analysis of indexicals used by Ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan in two of his purposively selected speeches; one in Urdu delivered on 23rd December, 2020 on the passing out ceremony of police officers and the other in English delivered on 27th September, 2019 in UNGA. The English speech has been analyzed using antconc software while the analysis of Urdu speech has been done manually. A quantitative analysis of the five kinds of deixes in both the speeches strengthened the research results of Samosir and Zainuddin (2013) by providing the proof of the fact that person deixis is the most dominant category of English deixes (45.5%) while spatial is the least dominant (5.1%). The analysis of Urdu speech revealed a similar pattern as the person deixis (51.9%) is the most frequent, spatial being the least (3.9%). The presence of all five kinds of deixes with a similar pattern of relative frequencies in both the languages have provided a useful data for the purpose of Parallel Grammar (ParGram) project (Butt et al., 1999) to find out parallel structures in the grammar of six languages out of which two have been analyzed in this paper.

Summary This article examines the views about syntax held by Humboldt, on the one hand, and by the founders of historical-comparative grammar (Bopp, Rask, Grimm, Pott, Schleicher), on the other. In general, it is noted that the grammaire générale tradition of 17th and 18th centuries still survives in the work of such scholars, despite of all criticism they seemingly raised against it. For Humboldt, the common core of all languages has its source in the identity of human thought; also his treatment of the verb and especially his reference to a ‘natural’ word order (i.e., SVO) are clearly reminiscent of this tradition. Traces thereof are also found in Bopp’s analysis of Indo-European conjugation, and in some of Rask’s writings. For instance, Rask, just as Humboldt, assumes a ‘natural’ word order and proposes a list of possible syntactic forms which closely remind us of Girard’s membres de phrase. Grimm’s position appears as more innovative, heavily influenced by a Romantic view of language, but some older conceptions sometimes show up in his work, e.g., when he deals with the notion of ‘subject’. Pott does not completely reject general grammar and a logically-based view of language; he only stresses the need of a more empirical approach than that adopted by the 17th and 18th century linguists. This picture radically changed with Steinthai and Schleicher: the former scholar pronounced a ‘divorce’ between grammar and logic, while the latter one argued that syntax does not belong to linguistics proper and rejected any possibility of postulating syntactic distinctions which do not have any direct morphological correlate.

Modern syntactical researches conducted by Arabs are under great influence of traditional grammar. That as a consequence has various methodological approaches to interpretation of a sentence, its definitions and classifications. Even though some classical Arabic grammarians make semantic distinction between terms ğumla and kelam, today they are perceived as synonyms, under the influence of contemporary linguistic developments. Modern Arabic syntax does not strictly define criteria of classification of an Arabic sentence. In addition to traditional classification to a nominal and verbal sentence, the classification supported and accepted as the only or the most significant one by most Arabic authors, these criteria vary from one author to another. However, it is noticeable that the criterion of functionality, criterion of predicativity, structure and declinability of a sentence are distinguished as contemporary norms in syntactic classifications of the Arabic language. Oriental writings in classification of Arabic sentences often use conventions of foreign languages and apply criteria that are not characteristic of the Arabic language. That does not reflect the actual state of Arabic syntax and it also belittles efforts and contributions of Arabic grammarians in this field. The text argues that the first research work by a Bulgarian linguist in the framework of Chomsky’s Transformational-Generative Grammar (Chomsky 1957) is Yordan Penchev’s 1964 paper “Constructions with the Preposition Освен”. With Chomsky being American, his framework could not be acknowledged openly as a theoretical model in Bulgaria for ideological reasons. Its application in Penchev’s paper is proven indirect-ly, using seven criteria. Two of them, fulfilled in (Penchev 1964), are discussed extensively in the paper in view of their specific features. The first of these criteria – the use of key transformational and generative terms by N. Chomsky in Penchev’s paper, is elaborated in the form of a comparative table. A burst of generative-transformational terms is noted and the techniques of this terminological transfer are commented on. According to the other criterion ‒ analysis following N. Chomsky’s transformational or phrase-structurе rules ‒ two model-theoretic aspects of Penchev’s text are discussed, the generative and the transformational aspect, with the aim of evaluating the first rules of this kind to have ever been formulated by a Bulgarian linguist. They are considered in contrast with those defined by Chomsky and with regard to the new ideas they introduced in Bulgarian syntax. Тhe perception of Penchev’s article by the then readers is also analyzed. Keywords: Bulgarian Transformational-Generative Grammar, Yordan Penchev, exceptive but-phrases, Bulgarian language

Abstract Following Berwick and Chomsky (2011), parameters are degrees of freedom open at the externalization (EXT) of syntactico-semantic structures (SEM) by sensorimotor systems (PHON) (Section 1). Within this framework, in Section 2 I focus on a case study concerning Northern Italian subject clitics, also raising the well-known question how to reconcile observable microvariation with the desideratum of a reduced number of (macro)parameters. Sections 3 reviews recent relevant models of parameterization, the Rethinking Comparative Syntax model (ReCoS, Biberauer et al. 2014) and the Parameters & Schemata model (Longobardi 2005, 2017). Sections 4–5 return to the case study, taking the reductionist view that parameters may be just categorial cuts, such as the 1/2P vs 3P split, interacting with externalization and other general principles of grammar.

The article continues a series of studies dedicated to teaching the Ukrainian language to foreign students who either know or have experience in studying Russian. This group comprises foreigners from post-Soviet countries, as well as foreign master’s and postgraduate students who previously studied in Ukrainian higher education institutions in Russian. In compliance with the Law on Education, they are now studying Ukrainian or learning it as the state language of their current country of study. The mastery of a new foreign language, as is commonly known, is built upon existing speaking experience, which determines the methodological necessity of comparing the systems of the known language with the language being studied. Such a comparative analysis allows the identification of common features in both languages and facilitates the application of previously acquired knowledge and skills in learning a new foreign language. Interference, understood as the interaction of different language systems, directly impacts the acquisition of a new language system. The foundation for studying and regulating interference processes lies in the contrastive approach. Contrastive linguistics aims to identify differences and similarities between modern languages, aiding in determining the directions of interference and explaining the cause of typical errors. In our previous articles, we explored interference effects when Russian-speaking foreigners studied the Ukrainian language, focusing on phonetics, grammar, and syntax. These studies involved a comparative analysis of the functional-communicative organization of sentences, exemplified by the examination of ways to express subject-predicate relations in Ukrainian and Russian. Functional-communicative grammar emphasizes the pivotal role of syntax as a system that organizes all other language levels. It views a sentence from a communicative organizational perspective as an utterance formed according to a specifically defined structural scheme, with the structural core being the predicate. The predicate designates specific positions for the participants in the situation described by the proposition (subject names or actants) and their quantity. The proposed article investigates various types of extenders for the predicative centre of sentences, considers primary methods of expressing object, meaning, and circumstantial relations in both simple and complex sentences, and highlights key differences in expressing these relations between Ukrainian and Russian. These differences merit the attention of Russian-speaking learners to prevent interference errors. The methodical recommendations provided herein may prove beneficial to teachers and methodologists in developing training programs, crafting textbooks, and designing teaching materials for Ukrainian language instruction tailored to specific groups of foreign learners. They also serve as valuable resources for novice teachers in preparing for practical classes.

Epistemic modality is described as the speaker's judgment, assessing the degree of the factual proposition, or the speaker's confidence or non-confidence in the truth value of the proposition. The paper focuses on the expression of “thấy”, “nghĩ” predicates in Vietnamese and compares with mental verbs in English. To achieve the research objectives, the paper uses descriptive, statistical and comparative methods to clarify modality in general and epistemic modality in particular. The paper initially contributes to clarifying the definition, category, and identification of epistemic modality in terms of grammar and vocabulary. Next, the paper points out the similarities and differences in the expression of epistemic modality in English and Vietnamese. The results show that the nature of vocabulary and syntax basically exists value of factuality and non-factuality. The most important feature of epistemic modality is subjectivity and objectivity. The speaker "I/Tôi" clearly expresses or implies commitment for what is said. Understanding and applying modality in general and epistemic modality in particular will help learners acquire language and culture better in the process of communication and translation.

The author analyzes the content of the journal focusing mainly upon the Ukrainian and comparative linguistics issues being projected on the units of all the language system levels, as well as the theory and practice of artistic translation. The paper finds that the issues of the journal articles are related to such modern linguistic trends as linguocultural studies and linguoconceptology, psycholinguistics, linguistic personality theory and linguoemotionology, theolinguistics and linguoaxiology, political and communicative linguistics, as well as text linguistics, discourse linguistics, linguistic genre studies, diary studies and linguistic expertise. Many research papers are written in the fi eld of traditional linguistics, in particular Ukrainian dialectology, the Ukrainian language history and all the branches of the modern Ukrainian language study (phonetics and phonology, word formation, lexicology, including terminology and paremiology; grammar, including morphology and syntax; as well as stylistics). The researchers are particularly interested in the problems of onomastics and modern Ukrainian sociolinguistics. The authors of the research papers under consideration updated the main methodological principles of modern linguistics: anthropocentrism, word, text- and discourse-centrism, interdisciplinarity, linguistic cognitivism, pragmatism, functionalism, structuralism, as well as the language philosophy postulates: semantics, syntactics and pragmatics.

This paper provides new data from Colloquial Singapore English (CSE) showing a hitherto unnoticed subject–object asymmetry: empty objects, but not empty subjects, exhibit sloppy/quantificational readings. According to a recent theory of argument ellipsis in Japanese/Korean (Oku 1998; S. Kim 1999; Takahashi 2007, 2008a, b, 2010), these readings obtain as a result of the LF-Copy of an overt argument from a full-fledged clause onto the corresponding empty argument position in an elliptical clause. Şener & Takahashi (2010) and Takahashi (2010) hypothesize that this operation is blocked by ϕ-agreement. This hypothesis provides a principled explanation for the subject–object asymmetry in CSE, coupled with the new observation that primary substrates of CSE – Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Malay – exhibit the same asymmetry as CSE. My analysis has significant implications for the comparative syntax of argument ellipsis and for theories of contact genesis. Among others, the analysis supports the claim (Miyagawa 2010) that Chinese possesses ϕ-agreement despite the lack of morphological manifestations. The results in this paper also provide strong evidence for the general substratist explanation on the emerging grammar of CSE (Bao 2005).

Writing is the most essential skill and all learners must develop regardless of the professions they aspire to pursue. Writing is a big challenge for both native and non-native students especially in the advancement of technology. It is the biggest challenge to the students of English as a foreign language. Using qualitative research methodologies in the classroom teaching and student learning experiences in higher education gains an in-depth understanding of the learners’ issues. The aims of the study were to implement Focus Group Discussions to explore learner issues when writing. The students of a Preparatory year Program of a Public University of Saudi Arabia were selected for this study and their issues of writing English were focused. The research data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and collaborative formative assessment. The data collected through the research tools were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparative methods. The findings reveal that the major problems in EFL learners’ writing are insufficient linguistic proficiency in general, organization of weak structures, L1 influence, writing anxiety, lack of ideas, problems in grammar, vocabulary and syntax in particular. The study also sheds light on the remedial measures such as using online applications, vocabulary practice and innovative teaching methods.

Abstract There is a widespread assumption in Construction Grammar (but also before and elsewhere) that the meanings of verbs correlate with or even determine their complementation forms and patterns. There is much less research on noun complementation, however, although this category is even more interesting for a number of reasons such as the potential for valency reduction, nominal topicalization constructions, and additional complementation options, e.g. of-PPs and existential constructions. In this paper we focus on the class of nouns reporting commissive illocutionary acts (promise, offer, pledge, refusal, bet, threat, etc.), and address the question of whether there is a correlation (i) between the meaning of these nouns and their preferred complementation patterns, and (ii) between their semantic similarity and their similarity in the distribution of complementation patterns. We report the results of a study of a set of 17 commissive nouns chosen from a wider collection of illocutionary nouns. Two types of analysis were carried out in order to compare the semantic and grammatical characteristics of these nouns. The semantic analysis was based on insights from speech act theory and the philosophy of language. We developed a framework for a systematic comparative description of the nouns in our word field. The results were tallied with a corpus-based grammatical analysis. Two hundred tokens of each noun type were randomly sampled from the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Using these data, the 17 nouns were subjected to an analysis of the relative frequencies of their complementation patterns. Results indicate a general match between noun meanings and complementation patterns. More specifically, however, they indicate that the closeness of this match depends on the prototypicality of nouns as members of the class of commissives. The study, then, contributes to our understanding of the relation between lexis and syntax. At the same time, it confirms the need for a close semantic analysis to account for the great extent to which item-specific information, i.e. properties of individual nouns, have to be taken into consideration at the expense of large-scale generalizations.

The article is dedicated to the research of the scientific heritage of Oleksandr Ivanovich Bondar – a famous Ukrainian linguist, professor, doctor of philological sciences, whose 70th birthday will be celebrated by the scientific community in 2022. The purpose of our article is to understand the place and significance of the scientific heritage of O. I. Bondar in modern linguistics. The object of observation is the scientific creativity of the professor. The subject of study is the problem of his linguistic development. The source base for our observation was the scientific heritage of the linguist. We set ourselves the following tasks: to reveal the problems of Professor Bondar’s scientific works; determine the specifics of his scientific activity; describe fragments of the ideological space of the linguist’s scientific discourse. The work uses such general scientific methods of research as analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, observation, thematic and ideologue portraiture of the scientist’s personality. It was found that O. I. Bondar actively worked in such scientific areas as: history of the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian dialectology, word-form, syntax, lexicography, functional grammar, phonology, lexicology, terminology, linguistic ecology, Ukrainian orthography, text linguistics, sociolinguistics, general linguistics, Slavic studies, Japanese studies, comparison of Ukrainian and Japanese languages, translation studies, computer linguistics etc. Among them is linguistic ecology, a comparative analysis of the Ukrainian and Japanese languages, the study of which the scientist initiated himself. Knowledge of languages, non-standard thinking of a scientist and the desire to learn new things, not only in the field of his specialty, but also far beyond it – all this served as the basis on which the research self of Professor Bondar was formed. The article focuses attention on the innovative views of O. I. Bondar: the question of studying the category of temporality in the Ukrainian language is considered; the problem related to determining the time of emergence of the Ukrainian language; the quantitative composition of phonemes in the modern Ukrainian language and the degree of phonemicity of phonemes are substantiated; the theory of language as humanitarian capital; the issue of language as the main ethnic- forming factor for Ukrainians is highlighted. Conclusions. The ideological space of the researcher’s scientific works is based on the desire to study the language and its diverse phenomena as an integral dynamic object that is in close relationship with all other realities of human existence. Hence the multi-vector nature of the linguist’s works. Scientific work of O. I. Bondar, in particular the research perspectives outlined by him, his unusual “optics” of scientific observations, peculiar methods of studying linguistic phenomena, are the source of the further development of many areas of linguistic science.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Maps are a means of communication with their own language. This contribution makes a methodological proposal for a tool for to analyse the cartographic language of thematic maps and atlases. Based on the work of Jacques Bertin and on approaches of the Visual Studies, this methodology works on decoding maps in terms of their basic elements, the signs and graphic objects that compose them. As a tool it should allow comparative research on cartographic productions, both, synchronically and diachronically. It suggests two analytical schemes, one for maps and the other for complex map-editions, e.g. atlases.</p><p> On the example of spatial entities (state territories, natural areas etc.), the first part of this contribution introduces the semiotic analysis-scheme for thematic maps. It shows how to deal systematically with signs, signatures and graphic objects on maps. Such analyses should produce the fundament for comparative approaches, which allow to detect typical patterns in cartography and to identify elements of cartographic languages.</p><p> We are interested in the cartographic languages of maps used in atlases. To do this we have chosen a quantitative analysis of the visual content, maps, diagrams and images. The quantitative method makes it possible to analyse a large corpus of maps and atlases, thus making it possible to make comparisons between contents both diachronically and synchronically, i.e. comparisons in time and space. This is an approach relatively rarely used in cartography. There are few studies that produce a quantitative analysis of cartographic content. Among the existing ones, that of Alexandre Kent and especially that of Muelhenhaus on the Goode atlas series. We are following in the footsteps of these studies. To do this, we decided to adopt a semiological approach to the study of maps. Of course, we cannot talk about maps and semiology without mentioning Jacques Bertin and his book: graphic semiology: diagrams, networks, maps (1963) in which he tried to define a “grammar” by establishing rules of good cartographic practice, even if the book is not exclusively reduced to the map.</p><p> The book itself does not contain any reference, but it can be said that graphic semiology is itself derived from linguistic semiology, developed in particular by Ferdinand Saussure. However, although Bertin's work has influenced many cartographers in the design of maps, the method has been little used in the cartographic analysis itself. Semiology is an approach that has been used mainly in the analysis of images and diagrams rather than in cartography. Although it is true that iconographic analysis studies in semiology claim more Barthes and Saussure than Bertin.</p><p> The map can also be considered as an image. Several iconographic analysis studies have thus integrated the map as an object of study. This is the case, for example, of engelhardt who, in his <i>thesis</i> “<i>the language of graphics: a framework for the analysis of syntax and meaning in maps, charts and diagram</i>” (2002), focuses on several types of iconography, even if the map remains a central element of his analysis. Another example is the work of André Lavarde, who in his article “<i>la flèche : le signe qui anime les schémas</i>” (1996) focuses on the history of the use of the arrow in diagrams, while evoking its use in geographical maps. There are therefore bridges between iconographic and cartographic analysis.</p><p> This research is therefore a continuation of the work of Bertin, Mulhenhaus and to a certain extent Engelhardt. The coding system we have developed for our cartographic analysis is divided into three parts and divided tehemselves into several categories. Each category corresponds to a column in the table. From there, there are two ways to fill in the columns. In the first case by filling in the field with the requested information such as the title of a map. Or in a second case to enter 0; 1; or 2 depending on whether the information that corresponds to the absence, presence or uncertainty of the requested information. So if the map coded uses the Mercator projection then it will be entered 1 in the column “map projection: cylindrical projection” and 0 in the column “map projection: compromise”.</p><p> The table is composed of three parts. The first part concerns the general information of the coded map (image 1). This is for example the name of the atlas, the page, the chapter in which the map is located. Then more general information about the map itself is coded like for example its title, theme, scale, type of projection used, etc. This makes it possible to collect a set of basic data. It should be noted that, as mentioned above, we do not only code maps but also other forms of visual representations of space that can be found in atlases. For example, there are images, satellite photos or diagrams that can represent different geographical areas. If the coded object is not a map, this is specified. There is a category provided for this purpose. When coding, cartography-specific elements, such as map projection, are therefore not taken into account. Not all the columns in our table are intended to be filled by each map or coded image. The codification process is therefore flexible. Although the code does not focus only on maps, they represent the vast majority of the content of the atlases studied. This is why we refer more to the “map” rather than to the “visual representation of space”. However, even if they are in the minority, it is important in the analysis to take into account representations of space other than cartography.</p><p> The second part of the table focuses on the signs used by the maps. First of all, we have chosen to divide them into three categories: symbols that are related to the point of the line and the surface. These are the three elementary figures of geometry that Bertin calls implantations. It is from these three types of locations that the different symbols are created. We have distinguished them between the thematic symbols, which are there to illustrate the theme of the map, to convey its message and the Background symbol present to help the reader to orientate himself in space. This is the case, for example, of the equator's path, which is rarely thematic, but rather serves as a geographical point of reference. Of course, the thematic symbols vary according to the theme of the map. Thus, territorial borders can be considered thematic if it is a political map, but will be considered Background information if it is present on a map representing global forest cover. The purpose of this part is to have as much content as possible on the elements that make a map.</p><p> The third and last part of the table refers to visual variables. To be interested in visual variables is to be interested in the interactions between symbols. It is on this part that we rely most on Bertin's work. We have thus taken 5 of the 7 variables he defined. The orientation and the two dimensions of the plan were excluded from our study because they are constant in the cartographic production. It would therefore be irrelevant to record them each time. This is not the case for the remaining components: size, value, texture, shape, and colour. These are elements that may be present in cartography but are not individually necessary. These visual variables form the basic grammar of the “cartographic language”. Studying the visual variables is a way for us to observe how the different signs interact with each other and to see how an information is convey. These visual rules have been established in the 1960s, therefore it the relevance of using this framework to study historical map can be questioned. But Bertin did not design his rules from scratch, he relied on previous mapping practices. It is therefore interesting to observe how often they have been used.</p><p> The second part deals with map themes and regional structures of atlases. Using principles of Visual Studies, it suggests to observe atlases as a whole as cultural products, each subject to a visual programme that determines the frameworks of its expressions and its claim for representativeness. By comparing elements like projection, scale, maps-themes, regional sequences etc. systematically, one may unveil the specific interpretations of world views which are contained in the atlas’ concepts. As some atlases are published in a long series of editions, they become interesting research objects in an evolutionary perspective.</p><p> In a diachronic perspective the coding scheme suggested here, focussing themes and regional subdivisions of atlases, builds the fundament for longitudinal studies. Both methodological parts should make cartographic and atlas-studies more compatible to cultural and historical research approaches.</p><p> Taking the example of a few maps from French atlases from nineteen centuries to the early 2000s the second part of this contribution wants to give an idea, how this methodology can be used to study the evolution of cartographic language over time under the influence of the global condition and how French cartographers faced the challenge of representing a growing interconnected world and which graphical tools they developed.</p>

This study attempted to examine the characteristics of current high school Chinese textbooks by comparing and analyzing the educational content of 11 Chinese textbooks by linguistic element. Specifically, the 11 textbooks were compared based on their educational contents on linguistic elements such as phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, Chinese characters and culture, and organized by their unique characteristics. With respect to vocabulary education in particular, the percentage of basic vocabulary in the 11 textbooks varied from 64% to 86%, but, in general, all textbooks included more than two-thirds of basic vocabulary. Additionally, they utilized various teaching methods to teach vocabulary, and actively used real-life activities or games that piqued students’ interest. With respect to grammar education, they generally all covered the contents suggested in the 2015 revised curriculum, but there was a lack of diversity in teaching and learning methods and the need to plan new teaching methods that would keep students engaged. Lastly, some textbooks introduced the Chinese language and China in general in relation to linked subjects; these connections can help students to develop a deeper and broader understanding of China and the Chinese language and is in line with the goal of fostering creative convergence talents outlined in the 2015 revised curriculum. Moving forward, various teaching and learning methods should be designed to keep students interested and engaged in China and learning the Chinese language.

Language serves as a crucial tool for human interaction. It transcends its basic structure of words, rules, and syntax, reflecting the complex subtleties of culture, history, and the social development of its users. Within the study of language, applied linguistics stands out as an essential discipline that delves deeper than theoretical discussions. It critically examines how language is utilized, its manifestations in various contexts, and its multifaceted applications in human communications across different fields. Central to this research is the exploration of the transformative influence of applied linguistics on the domain of grammar. This study places particular emphasis on the Arabic letter 'و' (Waw). Given its frequent occurrence and versatile role in texts, ranging from the esteemed Quran to classical Arabic literature and detailed grammatical discussions, the comprehensive and precise understanding of the letter 'و' is of utmost importance. Such understanding facilitates both rigorous textual analysis and profound comprehension of linguistic constructs within the Arabic language. To discern the depth of this influence, this research adopts a comparative methodology. It juxtaposes the time-honored traditional grammatical approaches with contemporary perspectives offered by applied linguistics. Through this comparative lens, the study sets out to achieve two primary objectives: firstly, to identify how applied linguistics might present alternative or even more enriched interpretations of 'و' distinct from classical views; and secondly, to elucidate the tangible implications of these interpretations in practical, real-world linguistic applications. In culmination, this rigorous investigation serves a dual purpose. Not only does it shed light on the nuanced roles and interpretations of the Arabic letter 'و', but it also positions applied linguistics as a beacon guiding the future trajectory of grammatical studies. The research accentuates the indispensability of a symbiotic relationship between traditional grammar and modern applied linguistic techniques, advocating for their combined use in achieving a holistic and evolved understanding of the dynamic Arabic language system.
