One of the biggest causes of vision loss in the globe is diabetic retinopathy (DR), a consequence of diabetes. Despite significant attempts to lower the prevalence of vision impairment, DR continues to grow. There is damage to the vascular endothelial cells as the first pathophysiology of DRcells and a decrease in pericytes. As a result of the hypoxic reactions that follow, vascular endothelialvascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) The most effective treatment available right nowControlling blood sugar levels is the key to preventing diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema (DME). Furthermore, laser therapy has proven to be effective. For example, grid and subthreshold diode laser micropulse photocoagulation (SDM) for DME has been used.reported. In cases of vitreous hemorrhage or tractional retinal detachment in PDR patients, vitrectomy has been undertaken. There has also been significant interest in the ability of anti-VEGF medication to slow the progression of PDR from DME patients. Even with these therapies, many individuals with DR are still at risk of losing their eyesight and developing potentially dangerous side effects.. In the most advanced stages of DR, laser photocoagulation and vitrectomy are effective treatments for preventing severe vision loss. Both approaches, however, have their limitations. Abstract. Poorly monitored river flows in many regions of the world have been hindering our ability to accurately estimate global water budgets as well as the variability of the global water cycle. In situ gauging sites, as well as a number of satellite-based systems, make observations of river discharge throughout the globe; however, these observations are often sparse due to, for example, the sampling frequencies of sensors or a lack of reporting. Recently, efforts have been made to develop methods to integrate these discrete observations to gain a better understanding of the underlying processes. This paper presents an application of a fixed interval Kalman smoother-based model, called inverse streamflow routing (ISR), to generate spatially and temporally continuous river discharge fields from discrete observations. The method propagates the observed information across all reachable parts of the river network (up/downstream from gauging point) and all reachable times (before/after observation time) using a two-sweep procedure that first propagates information backward in time to the furthest upstream locations (inverse routing) and then propagates it forward in time to the furthest downstream locations (forward routing). The ISR methodology advances prediction of streamflow in ungauged basins by accounting for a physical representation of the river system that is not generally handled explicitly in more-commonly applied statistically based models. The key advantages of this approach are that it (1) maintains all the physical consistencies embodied by a diffusive wave routing model (flow confluence relationships on the river network and the resulting mass balance, wave velocity, and diffusivity), (2) updates the lateral influx (runoff) at the pixel level (furthest upstream) to guarantee exhaustive propagation of observed information, and (3) works both with a first guess of initial river discharge conditions from a routing model (assimilation) and without a first guess (pure interpolation of observations). Two sets of experiments are carried out under idealized conditions and under real-world conditions provided by United States Geological Survey (USGS) observations. Results show that the method can effectively reproduce the spatial and temporal dynamics of river discharge in each of the experiments presented. The performance is driven by the density of the gauge network as well as the quality of the data being assimilated. We find that when assimilating the actual USGS observations, the performance decreases relative to our idealized scenario; however, we are still able to produce an improved discharge product at each validation site. With further testing, as well as global application, ISR may prove to be a useful method for extending our current network of global river discharge observations.

A key aspect of pilot-based grid operations are the GlideinWMS pilot factories. A proper and efficient use of any central block in the grid infrastructure for operations is inevitable, and GlideinWMS factories are no exception. The monitoring package for the GlideinWMS factory was originally developed when the factories were serving a couple of VOs and tens of sites. Today with the factories serving tens of VOs and hundreds of sites around the globe an update of the monitoring is due. Moreover with the new availability of industry open source storage and graphing packages an opportunity remains open. This work presents the changes made to the factory monitoring to leverage different technologies: Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, Grafana, and InfluxDB to provide a centralized view of the status and work of several GlideinWMS factories located in different continents around the globe.

Around the globe, various types of forest machinery are employed to conduct fully mechanized ground-based timber harvesting. In the Pacific Northwest, the whole-tree harvesting method remains dominant. While machine-integrated sensors provide accurate productivity information in the cut-to-length harvesting method, productivity is more complicated to determine in whole-tree harvesting. This literature review compiles and analyses the existing evidence on productivity studies of feller–bunchers and feller–directors in a systematic manner and identifies the factors influencing machine productivity. The study indicates that most of the previous research was conducted in North America, particularly in Canada. It was also found that a considerable portion of the literature lacked statistical analysis. Piece size, slope, and silvicultural treatment were the most commonly studied productivity-influencing factors among the results. Although there is already a general understanding of the most important factors influencing the productivity of feller–bunchers and feller–directors, there is still a lack of accurate measurement and isolation of individual factors to facilitate accurate productivity prediction. Further research is needed for the development of systems that use integrated sensors capable of estimating machine productivity. Updated productivity models will optimize harvesting operations, identify bottlenecks, and allow for the development of best practices.

Currently, humanity lives in the verge of a world-wide epidemic of the H7N9 influenza A virus. This strain has turned out to be very virulent for humans and there have been many reported casualties already in several places around the globe. Concordantly, not much is known for the H7N9 strain. Herein, the authors intend to establish a modest database of current knowledge and informed opinion in different key areas of the H7N9 virus. The source of the virus, its infection routes and mutations remain unclear. Results of several recent studies will be further analyzed including clinical, virological and histopathological manifestations of H7N9, diagnosis modes and viral transmissibility. Treatment, vaccination and public concerns about a pandemic threat will be discussed as well. The present work is expected to act as an updated world reference for the H7N9 influenza A strain. Moreover, modes for tackling H7N9 will be proposed, focusing on RNA polymerase for further investigation as a potential pharmacological target. Hence, invaluable conclusions may be drawn that will lead to insights in the fight against the most recent and rather lethal H7N9 strain.

Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most devastating pathogenic fungi that affects a wide range of cereal plants, especially rice. Rice blast disease causes substantial economic losses around the globe. The M. oryzae genome was first sequenced at the beginning of this century and was recently updated with improved annotation and completeness. In this review, key molecular findings on the fungal development and pathogenicity mechanisms of M. oryzae are summarized, focusing on fully characterized genes based on mutant analysis. These include genes involved in the various biological processes of this pathogen, such as vegetative growth, conidia development, appressoria formation and penetration, and pathogenicity. In addition, our syntheses also highlight gaps in our current understanding of M. oryzae development and virulence. We hope this review will serve to improve a comprehensive understanding of M. oryzae and assist disease control strategy designs in the future.

Salinity stress is one of the major threats to agricultural productivity across the globe. Research in the past three decades, therefore, has focused on analyzing the effects of salinity stress on the plants. Evidence gathered over the years supports the role of ethylene as a key regulator of salinity stress tolerance in plants. This gaseous plant hormone regulates many vital cellular processes starting from seed germination to photosynthesis for maintaining the plants’ growth and yield under salinity stress. Ethylene modulates salinity stress responses largely via maintaining the homeostasis of Na+/K+, nutrients, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inducing antioxidant defense in addition to elevating the assimilation of nitrates and sulfates. Moreover, a cross-talk of ethylene signaling with other phytohormones has also been observed, which collectively regulate the salinity stress responses in plants. The present review provides a comprehensive update on the prospects of ethylene signaling and its cross-talk with other phytohormones to regulate salinity stress tolerance in plants.

The marine intertidal zone constitutes one of the most interesting ecosystems on the earth. Oribatid mites of the family Fortuyniidae inhabit marine intertidal habitats in the tropical and subtropical coasts of the world. This family has not been known from Iran until now. The present work deals with a new oribatid species of this family found at the coast of the Gulf of Oman, southeastern Iran, from algae in the intertidal zone of a rocky shore. Fortuynia iranica sp. nov., is described from littoral environments of Chabahar Beach, Sistan and Baluchistan province based on adult and juvenile (deutonymph) stages. The new species is characterized by the presence of both prodorsal external and internal channels; fourteen smooth, thin and long notogastral setae, with a light-colored porose spot in the insertions, c3 completely absent; sensilli with a very slightly oriented head; glove-like lenticulus; epimeral setation 3-1-3-2 and presence of one pair of aggenital setae. An updated diagnostic key to the adults of known species of Fortuynia van der Hammen, 1960 is given.

Technological advancement has tremendously accelerated the promotion of microplastics in our environment. In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the production and use of plastics in the form of facemasks, face shields and PPE kits across the globe has intensified and becomes a new environmental challenge. As scientific knowledge is limited concerning the source, exposure, toxicity, and bioavailability of microplastics in the surroundings, this review has been aimed to provide comprehensive information about microplastics present in the environment with special emphasis on their deposition and related increasing menace in India, during and after the COVID 19 period. We have focussed on the 5 key research needs, involving (1) the occurrence and abundance of microplastics (2) sources, fate, and occurence of microplastics in different media (water, air and soil), (3) toxicological implications of microplastics on human beings, (4) scenario of microplastics disposal during COVID-19 pandemic and (5) major challenges and future directions to curtail them. We suggest that addressing these knowledge gaps will lay the groundwork to counteract such environmental issues which are important to prevent them from exacerbating. Combating microplastic contamination can be achieved through an intensive and combined effort of all, including the stakeholders, researchers, educators, media and policymakers. We can join the effort to manage plastic in the environment by refusing, reducing, reusing and recycling the plastic products, to prolong every item’s life cycle as far as possible. A start would be a focus on limiting the use of single-use plastic products, especially if alternatives are readily available.

AbstractWalzer has recently updated his just war theory to take account of terrorism, humanitarian military intervention and new interpretations of the doctrine of self-defence, pre-emptive and preventative warfare The ethical considerations that underwrite Walzer's most recent work invite us beyond the routine citation of his work to a proper consideration of the moral parameters of international politics. Beyond Just and Unjust Wars Walzer has a wealth of insight into the key questions of international theory. His work on toleration, the nature of universality or on the role of social criticism has always been the basis of his insight in to the hard questions of international ethics. Despite being heavily criticised for being communitarian or conservative (both charges that need serious re-evaluation) Walzer's ideas offer a real alternative to the dominant neo-Kantian cosmopolitan tradition and a workable ethical framework for thinking about the challenges of contemporary international politics and international law. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the final essay of Arguing About War. The essay, entitled ‘Governing the Globe’ offers a radical vision of a reformed international society inspired by the principles that underpin Walzer's development of his just war theory and it is vital that we take notice.

Music education takes place in many contexts, both formal and informal. Be it in a school or music studio, while making music with friends or family, or even while travelling in a car, walking through a shopping mall or watching television, our myriad sonic experiences accumulate from the earliest months of life to foster our facility for making sense of the sound worlds in which we live. The Oxford Handbook of Music Education, which comprises of two volumes, offers an overview of the many facets of musical experience, behavior, and development in relation to this diverse variety of contexts. In this first volume, articles discuss a range of key issues and concepts associated with music learning and teaching. The volume then focuses on these processes as they take place during childhood, from infancy through adolescence and primarily in the school-age years. Exploring how children across the globe learn and make music, and the skills and attributes gained when they do so, these articles examine the means through which music educators can best meet young people's musical needs. The second volume of the set brings the exploration beyond the classroom and into later life. Whether they are used individually or in tandem, the two volumes of this text update and redefine the discipline, and show how individuals across the world learn, enjoy, and share the power and uniqueness of music.

Each node updates its database in real-time as and when transactions occur. The transaction gets authorized only when a majority of the nodes in the network validate the transaction. Once the verification is complete, a block, consisting of hash and keys, is generated for each new transaction and is linked to previous transactions in every database. Every node updates its database with the new block. A hacker would have to break down every node in the system to commit fraud. Resumo:
Abstract As offshore wind assumes greater importance in global renewable energy, scour undermining the foundations of these structures becomes a critical concern. The issue of scour demands proactive solutions to ensure the durability of offshore wind turbines, considering the shift to sustainable energy across the globe. This paper outlines an integrated strategy to mitigate scour risks using interdisciplinary approaches. Details will be provided on how scour degrades foundation integrity and a review of current geotechnical engineering solutions, supported by case studies. The influence of currents, waves, and sediment transport on scour is highlighted with computational modeling to simulate these dynamic processes. Big data analytics is explored to enable rapid automated risk assessments using advanced numerical algorithms and predictive analytics. The study also analyzes existing mitigation measures and proposes enhancements to preparedness, rapid response, and training. Current regulations are reviewed for compliance, with recommendations to update offshore industry standards. The potential to apply these techniques more widely, including in the oil and gas sector, is discussed. Future challenges, including environmental changes and technical limitations, are noted. Additional research avenues include enhanced scour monitoring and new foundation designs. In summary, this paper synthesizes key learnings, recommends pragmatic next steps that can be taken, and forecasts the evolving scour risk outlook as the shift towards offshore wind expands exponentially. A collaborative and proactive approach engaging disciplines across offshore geotechnical engineering and marine geosciences is advocated to safeguard the vital role of offshore wind in sustainable energy, accounting for the complex challenges of dynamic open ocean environments. The proposed recommendations will enable offshore wind power to successfully become an integral part of how energy is generated around the world, thus supporting a green energy future that is sustainable and eco-friendly.
