199 homeless men were administered the General Mattering Scale to assess their belief that they mattered to others in their community. Analysis indicated that homeless men felt that they were important to others, that others pay attention to them, that they would be missed by others if they went away, that people were interested in what they had to say, and that others depended on them. The General Mattering Scale displayed strong internal consistency (Cronbach alpha of .85).

We are currently approaching a political stalemate between two discursive idioms of community and difference. A third way has been introduced through the politics of identity recognition (race, sexuality, multiculturalism). Yet the latter tends to overwhelm the politics of community on the grounds of its outmoded universalism and sacrifice of singularity. More with the interests of a welfare society in mind than the stakes in cultural politics, the article restates the Hegelian dialectic of recognition as a critique of both absolute subject-position and absolute other-position. Hegel regards this polarization as the non-starter in state of nature politics. Because global capitalism threatens a regression to a similar zero-point, Hegel’s dialectic of recognition is restated as the proper ground for a politics of civic recognition.

On November 13, 2018, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) decided on an appeal coming from Guyana in the case McEwan and Others v. Attorney General of Guyana. With this decision, the CCJ declared unconstitutional Section 153(1)(xlvii) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act of the Laws of Guyana, which made it a crime for a man to dress in female attire or for a woman to dress in male attire, in a public place, for an improper purpose. In the case, the CCJ also limited the extent to which the colonial “savings clause” present in the constitutions of the Commonwealth Caribbean countries limits the Court's judicial review powers.

Abstract The 1997 discovery of a fifty-thousand-year-old flute made from the femur of a cave bear, with its intimation of reanimating nonhumans, and the 1977 launch of the Voyager spacecraft carrying an eclectic set of sound recordings intended to be heard in the distant future by nonhuman others: two sonic events that frame the possible meanings of posthumous. Together these examples and others question whether everything audible is already over—the bear's lost life, electronic recording procedures—or indefinitely deferred until an act of listening that may never occur. An ecological address to the problems of making sonic culture at a historical turning point at or beyond terminal risk prompts a politics of the commons grounded in a general imagination (modeled on Marx's general intellect). Against earlier modernist claims for both rationality and its failure, sound cultures enact a drama of melancholy and hope in the ecological continuity of body and world at the moment of their end.

This study examines the legal thought and practices of Aceh at its arguably golden age, namely the seventeenth century. It does not only analyze the legal texts, but more importantly it attempts to elucidate its founding worldview, underlying philosophy, and the guiding ethical, moral and cultural system, that better inform readers of the legal thought and practices of the Malayo-Aceh. The study draws its elucidation primarily from the indigenous sources, which are recorded in the oral and written traditions. In a society that prized orality, Aceh recorded its history and traditions in ways unique to such a nature—the many hikayats, folk-tales, proverbs, poems, and the other kinds of expression within the literature genre. It also examines the indigenous historical sources, published and unpublished, as well as European and other sources. Such an approach provides an enriched understanding of the purported tension and conflict between Sharī'ah and Adat, the Adat Worldview of the Malayo-Aceh, and its ethical system. Understanding the political and economic context of the seventeenth century Aceh provides a spatial and temporal background to the study, as well as an idea of power and Otherness. In examining the legal texts, two primary texts are studied—Adat Aceh of the royal decrees (sarakata) type, and Mir'āt al-Ṭullāb by al-Sinkīlī of the Islamic legal (fiqhī) type, compared with another two texts of the same types. And in examining these legal texts, the study focuses on the treating of the Others—the foreign and indigenous Others. In sum, the above investigations inform us of the idea of Power, Authority and the Others to the Acehnese of the seventeenth century, and the idea of diversity and plurality that is integral to the Malayo-Islamic worldview of Aceh.

There is no doubt about the fact that Europe has become home for millions of ex-colonails, guest-workers, refugees, asylum-seekers. However, these new Europeans are not acknowledged to be Europeans but instead they are mostly perceived as not belonging. Being deprived of political and social rights and exposed to economic exploitation make them the European "
apartheid"
. Within this present conjunture, this thesis aims at a modest discussion on ever-rising racism in Europe. It focuses on European racism and in particular the new racism in Europe which has been on the rise since the 1970s and 1980s. It examines European new racism via three exemplary cases (France, Britain and Germany). Out of different histories, economies and out of different racisms, this thesis searches for similarities. In fact, it claims that Europe has a traditional racism which is claimed to be one of the outcomes of the European self-construction process. Therefore, the other point of focus that this thesis engages in is the process through which Europe constructs its identity. It intends to discuss what Europe is and how Europe constructs itself via its Others. It claims that Europe identifies itself on the negation of its Others. Hence, this thesis attempts to discuss the connection between racism in Europe and European self-construction/self-identification process. In other words, this thesis intends to clarify that the self-construction/self-identification of Europe, which has depended mostly on the negation of its Others, has resulted in racist-thinking and racism which has always existent in Europe despite the changes in different peroids and different contexts forming a racist tradition in Europe.

Resumo:
This thesis examines the relationship between rights and duties in the field of fetal gene therapy and assesses if the current regulatory position within England and Wales is compatible with the intergenerational aspects of scientific progress within fetal gene therapy (FGT). Within the field of genomics, the fetal junction has become a site where gene therapists are developing a range of medical techniques, such as fetal gene therapy and in utero stem cell therapy. Utilising such techniques raises questions about the intergenerational aspects of scientific progress and how intergenerational rights can reshape regulation. The thesis focuses upon these key questions: Are the intergenerational issues of FGT taken into account by both direct and indirect stakeholders? Can intergenerational issues override the reproductive rights of the mother? Have intergenerational issues impacted upon the clinical applications implicit and manifest in this work? Addressing such questions is important because the conflict between the rights of the mother, fetus, clinical researchers and society have the potential to delay progress in FGT. In addressing these questions the thesis utilised thematic analysis of relevant regulatory institutional documents, from international declarations to regulatory guidelines; and semi structured interviews of identified FGT practitioners to identify areas of potential conflict. Following the data collection and analysis, the field data identified five key areas of potential conflict, which were then assessed using the Principle of Generic Consistency (PGC) as proposed by Alan Gewirth (1978) and later altered by Beyleveld and Brownsword (2001). The thesis will argue that the field data shows that established regulatory principles such as human dignity are of limited value in relation to FGT. In other areas such as informed choice, autonomy and intergenerational equity the PGC is applied to define and partially resolve the outstanding areas necessary for consistent ethical and regulatory guidance in FGT

This research rises out of the perceived gap between rhetoric and reality in the congregational life of the church in the United States. Using the research tools of autoethnography and case study, it investigates the life settings of the researcher and the interior organizational dynamics of three cases, a for-profit, a nonprofit and a church organization. The research considers how organizational pre-conditions and traits and processes, leadership behavior and perspectives and the perceived benefits of an empowering environment, impacts the ability of the organization to implement and sustain an empowering environment. Three pre-conditions, namely, a flexibility in organizational behaviours, the total commitment of the primary leader, and a particular view of people were found to be essential. Four relational traits of voice, trust, authentication, and connectivity were discovered to generate a relational environment that was conducive to an empowering culture. No particular leadership style was found to be essential, only that the style could embrace the elements enumerated above. Personal and organizational benefits were outside the normative expectations of profit or other numerical measurements and closer to aspects of relationally and energy. There appeasers to be no significant difference between church and other organizational types in how empowerment functions. I conclude by reflecting on practical aspects and how the research journey impacted the researcher.

This project considers questions of religious othering in the contemporary United States through the lens of popular post-religious narratives. These narratives salaciously depict mistreated women in order to demarcate certain religions as deviant; authors and pundits then use these narratives in order to justify outside intervention in specific religious communities. By closely analyzing a selection of contemporary narratives written about women from Muslim and fundamentalist Mormon communities with special attention to both the feminist enactments and tropes of captivity which permeate these texts, this project challenges simplistic portrayals of religious Others. In doing so, the analysis draws the reader's attention to the uncanny imitations in many of these texts: in arguing that certain religions "capture" their female adherents, authors of contemporary captivity narratives silence the voices of women whose stories they seek to illuminate. The dissertation also explores the ambivalent content of many of these narratives. When read against the grain, captivity literature offers surprising opportunities for nuanced explorations of religion, gender and agency.

This thesis explores popular perception of '
Turkish Cypriotness'
in relation to Greek Cypriots and Tü
rkiyeliler in the framework of struggling political discourses proposing conflicting identities to the population in the northern part of Cyprus. Purpose of the study is to understand dominant elements in self-representations of '
native'
Turkish Cypriots in the context of relatively new reality, namely, the partition of the island and immigration from Turkey. In other words, this study focuses on images of '
Turkish Cypriots'
and of their '
Others'
- Greek Cypriots and Tü
rkiyeliler- in popular discourse. For the purpose of understanding the self-perception of identity among '
native'
Turkish Cypriots, in-depth interviews were conducted in different cities of the northern part of the island. As a result of analyses of these narratives, the relational and precarious nature of identificatory practice is pointed. Moreover, problems relating to dominant perception of '
Turkish Cypriotness'
marked with hierarchical exclusion of Tü
rkiyeliler is stressed. It is concluded that popular perception of '
Turkish Cypriotness'
signals the fact that, more than opening space for a transnational attachment, Cyprus-centered identity fosters exclusivist approach towards Tü

This thesis analyzes the European identity and its others with a special focus on two Eastern &ldquo
Others&rdquo
: the Russian and the Turk. In this context firstly the notion of identity, the role of difference in the formation of identity and the role of identity in international relations will be explored. Thereby the significance of identity in shaping the international relations will be shown. Then the development of Europe and European identity and its various others will be examined with a historical perspective. In the light of this exploration, the emergence of the East-West divide, the historical evolution of relations with the Russian and the Turk in relation with the changing connotations of the European identity will be studied. Finally the Russian and Turkish cases will be examined in a comparative way. In this way the converging and diverging points between the two cases in terms of their relationship with Europe and their place vis à
vis Europe will be analyzed.

AbstractThe land uses and covers of Europe are the most systematically mapped in the world today, and their associated datasets offer the greatest spatial and thematic detail. Thanks to the work done within the Copernicus Land Monitoring programme run by the European Environmental Agency (EEA) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, there are many general LUC datasets covering most of the European continent. These general datasets map all land uses and covers on the ground, without focusing on any specific type. However, whereas some cover the whole of Europe, others only map specific local areas of interest, such as urban or coastal areas, riparian zones or spaces protected under the Nature 2000 network. CORINE Land Cover (CLC) is the flagship European LUC mapping programme and a reference worldwide. It has provided consistent LUC information at a detailed scale (1:100,000) every 6 years since 1990. This is the result of a high degree of coordination between many different organizations and institutions across Europe. The Copernicus programme also includes other European datasets such as Urban Atlas, N2K, Riparian Zones and Coastal Zones, which provide very detailed LUC information at higher levels of spatial detail (scale 1:10,000) for specific geographical area types: Functional Urban Areas, the Natura 2000 network, riparian zones from Strahler level 2–8 rivers and areas 10 km away from the coastline. However, these projects do not cover the same long timeframe as CLC. In addition, their long-term future is far from clear in that updates are only planned for Urban Atlas and Coastal Zones. PELCOM, GlobCorine and the Annual Land Cover Product are the European projects that most resemble the LUC maps available at global and supra-national scales for other parts of the world. They were obtained through classification of satellite imagery. PELCOM and GlobCorine are only available for a few dates and at quite coarse spatial resolutions: 1 km and 300 m respectively. The Annual Land Cover Product consists of a series of LUC maps for the period 2000–2019 at a highly detailed spatial resolution (30 m). It offers information for a large number of different points in time. However, it makes a separate classification of land uses each year, which means that change analysis with this dataset is more uncertain than with CLC or other Copernicus Land Monitoring products. HILDA and S2GLC 2017 are LUC datasets produced within the framework of different research projects, which can be considered reference products in their respective fields. HILDA provides one of the largest time series of LUC maps currently available, spanning the period from 1900 to 2010. S2GLC 2017 is one of the most spatially detailed LUC mapping experiences at a supra-national scale, with a spatial resolution of 10 m.

The main question is whether solidarity constitutes a general principle of international law. Scholars are divided on the issue; and this depends on two factors: a) differences in the meaning given to the concept of solidarity; b) differing theories on the nature of general principles of international law. On the first point, the theories that identify solidarity with cooperation are not convincing, and one must instead adhere to a more restrictive concept. On the second point, three different categories of general principles must be admitted. Investigating some regulatory areas potentially relevant to solidarity, we conclude that the principle has a binding nature in some areas, is programmatic in others, and finally does not operate in other fields.

This paper presents a mesh-based geometric modeling method to create tessellated models of general structures, which can be the design results of conformal truss structure design, thermal design, topology design, material design, compliant mechanism design and others. A general structure configuration design format is proposed to describe the structures. A universal structure generating system is developed based on the mesh-based geometric modeling method. Besides generating a watertight surface model for an input structure configuration, the modeling approach can automatically add an important design feature, fillets, in the generated model. Therefore the structures’ mechanical performance is improved comparing to results generated by other methods. Examples from different structure design areas are presented. The validity of the generated models is verified by using an additive manufacturing system. The computational efficiency of the method is also discussed.

Ideas and concepts are suggested for producing a motor-vehicle gas-turbine engine able to compete in performance and most likely in cost with similarly rated motor-vehicle spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines. Several of these ideas are discussed qualitatively, while others arc shown through simple performance analyses. Results predict the possibility of thermal efficiencies of over 50% and marked increases in the fuel economy (over 90%) if the gas-turbine engine is used, for instance, as a direct replacement for a standard motor-vehicle engine. The latter calculations were based on Federal-Test-Procedure driving cycles.

Abstract The H2020 project entitled “Fracture mechanics testing of irradiated RPV steels by means of sub-sized specimens (FRACTESUS)” started on the 1st October 2020. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the applicability of miniaturized compact tension specimens in fracture toughness testing of the reactor pressure vessel steels under hot cell conditions. Validation of this method in an industrially-relevant environment will be an important step towards achieving its acceptance by the nuclear authorities, and finally, to induce its prospective usage by the nuclear power plant operators. Successful implementation of a miniaturized specimens testing technique will result, among others, in the optimization of surveillance material usage and savings in irradiated materials testing. The general project overview showing its structure, partners involved and main deliverables was published elsewhere. Here, we focus on some technical aspects being of the utmost importance in the initial stage of the project and which will have a crucial impact on its overall progress. The general consideration on the selection of the best available materials for testing are discussed on the examples of 73W weld, A533B LUS and the WWER-440 base metal 15Kh2MFAA. Moreover, the general scheme of the testing process, which is planned within the project, is briefly presented as well as the basic assumptions about the numerical modeling task aimed for rationalizing experimental findings.

Р. Миллса, З. Баумана, Х. Ортеги-и-Гассета и др. critical thinking is considered one of the key competencies of modern education, and modern students certainly need to develop it, since the features of modern school education and the development trends of mass society do not allow it to develop adequately to the needs of rapidly changing social reality. This article uses the example of a General sociology course to show the process of developing critical thinking at the University. The works of Ch.R. Mills, Z. Bauman, J. Resumo:
The idea of ‘innovative agonology’ came into being in 2016 in the Archives of Budo journal with the thematic section ‘Prophylactic and Therapeutic Agonology”. Innovative agonology (IA) is an applied science dedicated to promotion, prevention and therapy related to all dimensions of health and regarding the optimization of activities that increase the ability to survive (from micro to macro scales). The basic method of IA in the research and application sphere is a complementary approach in the broadest possible cognitive-behavioural perspective. At the essence of any particular science is the substantiation of its claims. Since any time one needs to either maintain health, survive, eliminate or slow down the effects of destructive factors, the key phenomenon is some form of combat, so the justification for these necessary actions is provided by the science of struggle. All five existing theories of struggle are published in Polish, with the terminology of Tadeusz Kotarbiński’s (1938) general theory of struggle (agonology) prevailing over the others. Kotarbiński placed military struggles on the ‘ground floor’, parliamentary and judicial disputes, commercial competition, sports fights, etc. on the ‘middle floor’, and he reserved the top floor’ for the general theory of action (praxeology), which includes agonology  but not vice versa. Since the usefulness of almost every scientific discovery is considered from a military perspective, it is not surprising that another theory (detailed one) by Józef Konieczny concerns destruction (1969). Paradoxically, Jarosław Rudniański published the theory of non-armed struggle during martial law in Poland under a camouflaged title (1983). In 1989, when Russian troops were still stationed (they left Poland on September 17, 1993), he re-issued the work (without camouflage) and supplemented it with the theory of compromise. At that time (1991) I published the theory of defensive struggle together with the theoretical basis for complementary prevention and therapy of somatic and mental health and increasing personal safety (survival). The law of the only possibility, as defined in my theory of combat sports (2000), is universal enough to be used in interpretations of even such remote phenomena as miraculous healings.Rudniański defined general rule of struggle as “an action in which a material or surrounding all the action’s time is in independent motion from an acting one, creating simultaneously strong and various resistance; act this way to be able at any moment possibly change both a plan of action and its manner”. Such a broad rule encompasses every case of human struggle with the need to overcome (fight) against factors that threaten one’s own or others’ health or life, as well as the defence of universally recognized values, nature, cultural products, technology, etc.Familiarity (by at least one member of the research or practical problem-solving team) with the languages and algorithms of detailed struggle theories, as well as with the basics of complementary research methodologies, is a prerequisite to minimize the possibility of omitting important details.

Contracts in the construction industry are structured in a manner that splits the risks between different contracting parties; hence risk allocations within the contract affect the price and operation. As most Construction Contracts are long-term contracts, therefore, it is essential to consider having provisions to mitigate foreseeable and unforeseeable risks which may reduce the positive economic prospects and gains, if not, properly evaluated, managed and considered under the contract. For those reasons and many others, the Force Majeure (FM) or the act of God clauses are included in almost all construction project contracts. This paper will provide an analysis of the FM clause in the Public Works Authority (PWA) General Conditions of Contracts (GCOC) for 2018 in terms of the meaning of FM, a list of examples, and the consequences of invoking the FM clause and others. Moreover, the FM clause in PWA GCOC 2018 will be compared with other drafts of the FM clause in other forms of contracts that are used internationally, such as the International Federation of Consulting Engineers General Conditions of (FIDIC) Red Book, 1999 and 2017, and others. This comparison was conducted by taking into consideration scholarly opinions and existing literature on the topic. Finally, the paper addresses the gaps in the existing PWA GCOC FM clause and the applicability of the FM clause in cases such as COVID-19 and then recommends some amendments that could be considered in future contracts.

Socio-economic inequalities are part and parcel of people’s everyday life in any society; yet for people who belong to ethnic, linguistic, religious, or cultural communities, these inequalities tend to be markedly greater than for others. Quite often, national minority communities face higher hurdles in accessing employment and gaining incomes on a par with those of the majority, and have lower access to adequate healthcare services, housing, education, or public services in general. And yet, a conversation about the socio-economic inequalities facing minority communities, the specific challenges they face, or the ways in which their participation might be improved is largely absent.

This paper discusses the religious dimension of the public debate concerning the public health measures adopted by the Romanian authorities during the pandemic and focuses on the role played by the Romanian Orthodox Church within this context. It delineates the different camps that were formed within the Church in this regard and traces their evolution throughout the pandemic. It contextualizes the position of the Church in order to better understand it, placing it within the broader context of the Romanian society during the pandemic and integrating it within the longer history of post-communist relations between the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian state and the Romanian civil society. It analyses the political impact of the public health measures and the role of the Church in shaping this impact. Finally, starting from the Romanian experience of the pandemic and from the ideological, theological and political disputes that it has generated within the Romanian public sphere, it develops some general conclusions regarding the relation between faith, science and politics whose relevance, if proven valid, surpasses the Romanian context and thus contributes to a more ecumenical discussion regarding the theological, pastoral and political lessons that can be learned from an otherwise tragic experience.

Resumo:
This paper is for CGE modelers and others interested in modern trade theory. The Armington specification of trade, assuming country-level product differentiation, has been central to CGE modelling for 40 years. Starting in the 1980s with Krugman and more recently Melitz, trade theorists have preferred specifications with firm-level product differentiation. We draw out the connections between the Armington, Krugman and Melitz models, deriving them as successively less restrictive special cases of an encompassing model. We then investigate optimality properties of the Melitz model, demonstrating that a Melitz general equilibrium is the solution to a global, cost-minimizing problem. This suggests that envelope theorems can be used in interpreting results from a Melitz model. Next we explain the Balistreri-Rutherford decomposition in which a Melitz general equilibrium model is broken into Melitz sectoral models combined with an Armington general equilibrium model. Balistreri and Rutherford see their decomposition as a basis of an iterative approach for solving Melitz general equilibrium models. We see it as a means for interpreting Melitz results as the outcome of an Armington simulation with additional shocks to productivity and preferences variables. With CGE modelers in mind, we report computational experience in solving a Melitz general equilibrium model using GEMPACK. Key words: Armington, Krugman and Melitz; CGE modelling; international trade. JEL codes: F12; D40; D58; C6

Placement, both in university and in the civil service, according to performance in competitive exams is the norm in much of the world. Repeat taking of such exams is common despite the private and social costs it imposes. We develop and estimate a structural model of exam retaking using data from Turkey`s university placement exam. Limiting retaking results in all agents gaining ex-ante, and most gaining expost. This result comes from a general equilibrium effect: retakers crowd the market and impose negative spillovers on others by raising acceptance cutoffs.

The purpose of the study is to identify the figurative means in the formal diplomatic texts of speeches of chief delegates of the Ukrainian SSR to exert influence at the sessions of the UN General Assembly. Based on the interpretive method of speech analysis and the method of generalisation of the data obtained, an attempt was made to identify the main figurative means and expressiveness of speech, which help to achieve the effect of influence on the reader (listener). In order to identify hidden meanings, a hermeneutic approach to understanding texts was used. According to the results of the study, the most actively used linguistic means of figurativeness in the considered texts are epithets, metaphors, phraseologies. There are many more negative epithets used in the texts of speeches than positive ones, which aim to make people aware of the idea of self-preservation, to arouse emotions of anxiety, fear, vigilance. Metaphors of positive and negative evaluation are used to verbalise mental states, social states and thought processes. Most of the epithets, metaphors, idioms represented in the text are used to denote a negative evaluation, which is perceived as a deviation from the norm and is motivated by the following factors: the reluctance of people to take positive action, irresponsible attitude of some people towards others, socially unacceptable flaws and shortcomings. A logical continuation of this study is the analysis of linguistic means of figurativeness and evaluativity of other types of texts of the official style, including statements and conventions.
