Il existe un lien privilégié entre Les Écritures et l’écriture, entre le christianisme, la littérature et la poésie. En régime chrétien, La Nouvelle traduction de la Bible (Bayard 2001) est le dernier chantier d’envergure innovateur d’un point de vue biblique et littéraire. Comment ce travail a-t-il contribué à féconder les œuvres d’une génération d’écrivains comme Valère Novarina et Frédéric Boyer ? Une nouvelle vitalité du christianisme peut-elle advenir du côté de la littérature contemporaine ?

Cette recherche part de l’hypothèse que l’essai littéraire, parce qu’il pense à partir de la forme, permet d’appréhender une part de la vulnérabilité qui résiste aux approches philosophiques de la notion. La vulnérabilité demande de prendre en compte des façons de se rapporter au monde qui sortent du modèle universalisant et dualiste structurant le paradigme du savoir. Elle demande aussi de repenser les couplages notionnels sur lesquels se fonde le « partage du sensible » occidental et échappe à l’espace politique tel que la philosophie du XXe siècle l’a configuré. Les quatre essais qui composent le corpus ont le souci de penser le réel à partir de ses lieux d’opacité et engagent leur vulnérabilité dans la pensée. Dans La Bulle d’encre de Suzanne Jacob (1997), Les Outils de Leslie Kaplan (2003), Renversements de René Lapierre (2011) et Là où le cœur attend de Frédéric Boyer (2017), la pensée s’affronte à sa propre limite dans le langage et se tient dans des lieux où la trame du monde s’effiloche. Ils accueillent dans le langage le non-sens et la perte de repères symboliques qui caractérisent, en partie, la vulnérabilité. Travaillant à partir d’une logique négative, ces textes font basculer l’ambivalence dont la philosophie dote la vulnérabilité dans une unité ouverte, dont la cohérence n’implique pas l’absence de contradiction. Ce faisant, ils mettent au jour l’intelligence singulière de l’essai. Cette recherche suit ce fil jusque dans l’écriture et comporte une partie création. « Exercice du vertige » poursuit l’équation que l’essai pose entre l’écriture et la vie et investit sa méthode de recherche – qui implique à la fois une archéologie des formes et l’exercice d’une confiance dans le langage
This research suggests that the literary essay, because it thinks through the form, allows us to understand a part of the vulnerability which resists the philosophical approaches of the concept. Vulnerability demands to take into account ways of relating to the world that depart the universalizing and dualistic model which structures the paradigm of knowledge. It also requires a rethinking of the notional couplings on which the occidental “partage du sensible” is based and escapes the political space as configured by twentieth-century philosophy. The four contemporary literary essays that make up the corpus are all concerned with thinking reality from its places of opacity and engaging their vulnerability in thought. In Suzanne Jacob's La Bulle d’encre (1997), Leslie Kaplan's Les Outils (2003), René Lapierre's Renversements (2011), and Frédéric Boyer's Là où le cœur attend (2017), the reflection confronts its own limit in language and stands in places where the fabric of the world unravels. They welcome in language the nonsense and loss of symbolic markers that characterize, in part, vulnerability. Working from a negative logic, these texts turn the ambivalence with which philosophy characterizes vulnerability into an open unity, whose coherence does not imply the absence of contradiction. By doing so, they bring to light the singular intelligence of essay. This theoretical research is followed by a creative part entitled "Exercising desiquilibrium" which pursues the connection posed by the essay between writing and life and employs its research method, which involves both an archaeology of forms and the exercise of confidence in language

Musical settings of Walt Whitman’s poetry were ‘beyond the nation’ from the very beginning. The first of them was composed in 1880 by an Alsatian immigrant to the US, Frédéric Louis Ritter, and until around 1930 the majority of Whitman settings came from German and British composers. The majority of those settings, in turn, dealt with war and its aftermath in mourning. Whitman’s poetry of the American Civil War provided a template for grappling musically with later conflicts, from the Boer War to World War I to World War II. The years 1942 and 1948 saw major war-themed settings from four German and German-émigré composers: Kurt Weill and Paul Hindemith in America, and Hans Werner Henze and Karl Amadeus Hartmann in Germany. A common thread among these pieces, exemplified most explicitly in Weill’s setting of ‘Come Up from the Fields, Father’, is the question of whether and how the act of transposed mourning can make the collective trauma of war ‘livable’ – in a sense of the term derived from T. W. Adorno and Judith Butler, for whom ‘livability’ is measured by the power of publicly avowed mourning to integrate trauma into the symbolic systems on which social life depends.
