Resumo:
Dislocation loop was generated by electron irradiation in nickel aluminum alloy. It is important to know dislocation characteristics obtained from a high energetic electron irradiation. If b is the Burger vector of a dislocation loop and g is the diffraction vector, dislocation loop will appear larger, smaller or disappear for g.b>0, g.b<0 or g.b=0, respectively. Dislocation loop was determined as follows – first, the appearance of dislocation loops is arranged in observation table. Second, based on type of dislocation loop, Burger vector and diffraction vector, appearance of dislocation loop is arranged in calculation table. Third, based on observation and calculation table, Burger vector and type of dislocation loop is determined. The results show that dislocation loops consist of perfect dislocation loops and Frank dislocation loops. The perfect dislocation loops have Burger vectors of ½[0 ] and ½[ 0] while Frank dislocation loops have Burger vectors of ⅓[1 1], ⅓[11 ], ⅓[ 11], ⅓[111], ⅓[1 1], ⅓[11 ] and ⅓[ 11]. All dislocation loops are interstitial types.

An in-situ experiment in an electron microscope is now a well established and useful technique in materials science. In this review recent contributions of in-situ experiments, especially of straining and heating experiments, to materials science will be high-lighted.The earlier works have been reviewed by Saka and Imura. It is believed that an external stress gives rise to an anistropy in the rate at which point defects are absorbed by edge dislocations; this mechanism is considered to explain the irradiation creep. A combined in situ tensile/irradiation experiment in a HVEM has been carried out to study effects of applied stress on the growth of dislocation loops. Fig. 1 shows typical microstructures of Ag irradiated at 403K for 10 min with 1MV electrons in the absence (a), and in the presence of an external stress of 5.5 kg/mm2 (b). Frank loops of interstial type, formed by electron irradiation, grew more rapidly in the direction of the external tensile stress than in the others. These results show that an external tensile stress has a profound effect on climb rates of Frank loops of interstitial type. However, detailed analysis of the results indicates that there is a considerable discrepancy between experiment and theory.

In this paper, we report on the synchrotron white beam topographic (SWBXT) observation of “hopping” Frank-Read sources in 4H-SiC. A detailed mechanism for this process is presented which involves threading edge dislocations experiencing a double deflection process involving overgrowth by a macrostep (MP) followed by impingement of that macrostep against a step moving in the opposite direction. These processes enable the single-ended Frank-Read sources created by the pinning of the deflected basal plane dislocation segments at the less mobile threading edge dislocation segments to “hop” from one slip plane to other parallel slip planes. We also report on the nucleation of 1/3< >{ } prismatic dislocation half-loops at the hollow cores of micropipes and their glide under thermal shear stress.

AbstractFocused ion beam (FIB) induced damage in nanocrystalline Al thin films has been characterized using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. Electron tomography was used to analyze the three-dimensional distribution of point defect clusters induced by FIB milling, as well as their interaction with preexisting dislocations generated by internal stresses in the Al films. The atomic structure of interstitial Frank loops induced by irradiation, as well as the core structure of Frank dislocations, has been resolved with aberration-corrected high-resolution annular dark-field scanning TEM. The combination of both techniques constitutes a powerful tool for the study of the intrinsic structural properties of point defect clusters as well as the interaction of these defects with preexisting or deformation dislocations in irradiated bulk or nanostructured materials.

A model based on the generation and recombination of defect was developed to describe the stability of stacking faults and basal plane dislocation loops in crystals with layered polytype structures. The stability of the defects configuration was analysed for stacking faults surrounded by Shockley and Frank partial dislocation as well as Shockley dislocation dipoles with long range elastic fields. This approach allows the qualitative prediction of defect subsystems in polytype structure in external fields.

Austenitic stainless steels are widely used in the nuclear industry as internals. These structures reside mainly in the reactor vessel and, due to their proximity with fuel assemblies, are subjected to severe operating conditions. These elements are exposed to high irradiation doses which can reach 100 dpa after 40 years of operating, at a temperature close to 350°C. These operating conditions affect the microstructure of steels and their mechanical behavior, which leads to the deterioration of their mechanical properties and their corrosion resistance. The objective of this PhD research work is to establish at the atomic scale a constitutive law describing the edge dislocation motion in a random Fe-Ni10-Cr20 solid solute solution, to bring a comprehensive understanding of the interaction mechanism between the edge dislocation and the Frank loops and to investigate the effect of temperature, alloying random generator, orientation and size of the Frank loop on the mechanical stress. To achieve these objectives, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted with a recently developed FeNiCr potential used to mimic the behavior of austenitic stainless steels. These simulations have been performed in static conditions as well as at 300 K, 600 K and 900 K and the interactions realized for loop sizes of 2nm and 10nm. A constitutive law taking into account the temperature and strain rate is proposed; the interaction between the edge dislocation and the Frank loop revealed 3 kinds of interaction mechanisms: simple shearing, unfaulting and absorption of the loop. Absorption is the most stable mechanism; the analyses of the resulting mechanical properties have shown that the unfaulting mechanism requires the highest stress to make the dislocation overcome the obstacle. On the other hand, contrary to previous studies, the unfaulting of the loop surface occurs only when the dislocation comes into contact with the edge dislocation; for the 2 nm Frank loop size, the coupling between the probability of the outcome of the reaction and the average strength of the obstacle constitutes useful data for Dislocation Dynamics simulations. The observations of the resulting Frank loop configurations following the interaction with the dislocation allow justifying the emergence of clear bands observed in TEM. This work has been partially supported by the European Commission FP7 with the grant number 232612 as part of the PERFORM 60 project

Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metals is an advanced technology that enables rapid implementation and design optimization of complex parts. It is now used in many industrial sectors, including nuclear. One of the most common processes in AM is Laser Powder Bed Fusion, which results in a particular microstructure that could influence the material's response to irradiation. The objective of this thesis was to study the effect of heavy ion irradiation on the microstructure of AM Ni-20Cr using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), as well as its impact on its mechanical properties, to determine whether AM could be used for nuclear applications. For this purpose, three additive manufacturing strategies and the effect of annealing were studied and compared to a reference material. Various heavy ion irradiation experiments were conducted, on bulk samples as well as on thin foils observed via in situ TEM. In situ experiments allow measuring the defect growth kinetics at low doses and tracking the evolution of certain characteristics. It is thus demonstrated that in all samples, irradiation induces the formation of Frank loops and perfect loops. The manufacturing strategy does not influence the microstructure evolution of AM samples. However, the dendritic cells, characteristic of AM, are dissolved under irradiation. Additionally, a lower density of dislocation loops is measured in the AM samples compared to the annealed and reference samples that show a similar evolution. This is explained by a higher density of defect sinks in the as built AM material. The observed microstructural evolution is linked to the mechanical properties, which are measured by micropillar compression. It is shown that the annealed and reference materials experience an increase in their critical resolved shear stress due to the creation of dislocation loops, whereas the AM material show a decrease due to the dissolution of dislocation cells, superior to the hardening component. These changes are confirmed by the application of the dispersed barrier-hardening model

Resumo:
Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death throughout the developed world. With the demand for donor hearts far exceeding the supply, a bridge-to-transplant or permanent solution is required. This is currently achieved with ventricular assist devices (VADs), which can be used to assist the left ventricle (LVAD), right ventricle (RVAD), or both ventricles simultaneously (BiVAD). Earlier generation VADs were large, volume-displacement devices designed for temporary support until a donor heart was found. The latest generation of VADs use rotary blood pump technology which improves device lifetime and the quality of life for end stage heart failure patients. VADs are connected to the heart and greater vessels of the patient through specially designed tubes called cannulae. The inflow cannulae, which supply blood to the VAD, are usually attached to the left atrium or ventricle for LVAD support, and the right atrium or ventricle for RVAD support. Few studies have characterized the haemodynamic difference between the two cannulation sites, particularly with respect to rotary RVAD support. Inflow cannulae are usually made of metal or a semi-rigid polymer to prevent collapse with negative pressures. However suction, and subsequent collapse, of the cannulated heart chamber can be a frequent occurrence, particularly with the relatively preload insensitive rotary blood pumps. Suction events may be associated with endocardial damage, pump flow stoppages and ventricular arrhythmias. While several VAD control strategies are under development, these usually rely on potentially inaccurate sensors or somewhat unreliable inferred data to estimate preload. Fixation of the inflow cannula is usually achieved through suturing the cannula, often via a felt sewing ring, to the cannulated chamber. This technique extends the time on cardiopulmonary bypass which is associated with several postoperative complications. The overall objective of this thesis was to improve the placement and design of rotary LVAD and RVAD inflow cannulae to achieve enhanced haemodynamic performance, reduced incidence of suction events, reduced levels of postoperative bleeding and a faster implantation procedure. Specific objectives were: * in-vitro evaluation of LVAD and RVAD inflow cannula placement, * design and in-vitro evaluation of a passive mechanism to reduce the potential for heart chamber suction, * design and in-vitro evaluation of a novel suture-less cannula fixation device. In order to complete in-vitro evaluation of VAD inflow cannulae, a mock circulation loop (MCL) was developed to accurately replicate the haemodynamics in the human systemic and pulmonary circulations. Validation of the MCL’s haemodynamic performance, including the form and magnitude of pressure, flow and volume traces was completed through comparisons of patient data and the literature. The MCL was capable of reproducing almost any healthy or pathological condition, and provided a useful tool to evaluate VAD cannulation and other cardiovascular devices. The MCL was used to evaluate inflow cannula placement for rotary VAD support. Left and right atrial and ventricular cannulation sites were evaluated under conditions of mild and severe heart failure. With a view to long term LVAD support in the severe left heart failure condition, left ventricular inflow cannulation was preferred due to improved LVAD efficiency and reduced potential for thrombus formation. In the mild left heart failure condition, left atrial cannulation was preferred to provide an improved platform for myocardial recovery. Similar trends were observed with RVAD support, however to a lesser degree due to a smaller difference in right atrial and ventricular pressures. A compliant inflow cannula to prevent suction events was then developed and evaluated in the MCL. As rotary LVAD or RVAD preload was reduced, suction events occurred in all instances with a rigid inflow cannula. Addition of the compliant segment eliminated suction events in all instances. This was due to passive restriction of the compliant segment as preload dropped, thus increasing the VAD circuit resistance and decreasing the VAD flow rate. Therefore, the compliant inflow cannula acted as a passive flow control / anti-suction system in LVAD and RVAD support. A novel suture-less inflow cannula fixation device was then developed to reduce implantation time and postoperative bleeding. The fixation device was evaluated for LVAD and RVAD support in cadaveric animal and human hearts attached to a MCL. LVAD inflow cannulation was achieved in under two minutes with the suture-less fixation device. No leakage through the suture-less fixation device – myocardial interface was noted. Continued development and in-vivo evaluation of this device may result in an improved inflow cannulation technique with the potential for off-bypass insertion. Continued development of this research, in particular the compliant inflow cannula and suture-less inflow cannulation device, will result in improved postoperative outcomes, life span and quality of life for end-stage heart failure patients.

Focusing on the interrelationship between Jacob van Loo's art, honor, and career, this book argues that Van Loo's lifelong success and unblemished reputation were by no means incompatible, as art historians have long assumed, with his specialization in painting nudes and his conviction for manslaughter. Van Loo's iconographic specialty - the nude - allowed his clientele to present themselves as judges of beauty and display their mastery of decorum, while his portraiture perfectly expressed his clients' social and political ambitions. Van Loo's honor explains why his success lasted a lifetime, whereas that of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Vermeer did not. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book reinterprets the manslaughter case as a sign that Van Loo's elite patrons recognized him as a gentleman and highly-esteemed artist.

This chapter presents an overview of the role of communications in governance indicators and discusses challenges to understanding whether, how, and why their intended audiences use or fail to use rankings, indices, and related data. These include long-standing challenges associated with ensuring that information meets the needs of different target audiences, engaging with traditional media, and using rankings to present indicators. As new technologies have changed information flows and dynamics, new challenges have emerged, including echo chambers and data graveyards. The chapter shows a broken feedback loop between governance indicator creators and their intended users that can be traced to the understanding of communications as an accessory activity, without integrating user research and frank self-assessments into the indicator creation cycle. More research should be conducted about the extent to which the current offer of indicators is meeting users’ needs and the extent to which underlying theories of change remain valid.

If one looks at the development of crime and criminality, it is always also a piece of contemporary history and milieu study. This anthology looks at the consequences of these phenomena in the Ruhr region. What factors influence the (non)sense of security of people living in the metropolitan region? This chapter considers shorter forms of fiction. It looks at some prominent arguments on the case for brevity and the modern subject. Some commentators such as Frank O’Connor, H. E. Bates, and Elizabeth Bowen — all fine practitioners of the short story and its most astute critics at mid-century — suggested that short forms, by dint of their shortness, had a unique capacity to represent the lived condition of modernity. All these commentators appear to argue the same thing: that short stories are better adapted to the cultural moment of technological modernity than are long ones. They also predict great things for them.

Abstract As reviewed in Chapter 4, anatomically and functionally complex neuronal aggregates that are involved in coordinating regional cardiac function exist in intrathoracic extracardiac as well as intrinsic cardiac ganglia. It has been proposed that the intrinsic cardiac nervous system represents the final common pathway for the control of regional cardiac function. This system integrates afferent neuronal information arising from the heart to exert spatial and temporal control over cardiac efferent neurons regulating different cardiac regions. As such, it forms part of a hierarchy of intrathoracic and central neuronal feedback loops involved in regulating regional cardiac dynamics.6 In this scheme, neurons located in the various intrinsic cardiac ganglionated plexuses play a major role in beat to-beat regulation of regional cardiac function, a role that has traditionally been minimized to the benefit of local mechanical interactions (the Frank-Starling hypothesis). One outstanding issue in the field of neurocardiology concerns the patterns of efferent neuronal projections to various cardiac regions arising from the different ganglionated plexuses located in divergent atrial and ventricular regions. At present, this is a subject of considerable controversy. Some authors believe that neurons in the right atrial ganglionated plexus, for instance, subserve solely sinus nodal function whereas those in the inferior vena cavalinferior left ventricular ganglionated plexus exert predominant control over the atrioventricular node. In contrast, it has been our contention that the multiple neurons existing within a given ganglionated plexus modulate divergent car diac regions while displaying preferential control over regional cardiac function.

Abstract Initially being told that you have Parkinson’s disease (PD) can be devastating. Often the first thing that comes to mind is an image of a relative or an acquaintance with terrible, end-stage problems. We tend to remember worst- case scenarios. Hearing Parkinson’s disease may evoke a mental image of Uncle Frank with PD, who was in a wheelchair and died in a nursing home. However, someone in the workplace, still leading a full life after ten years of PD, may be forgotten. Furthermore, Uncle Frank may not have had PD but a disorder that only looks like PD, or possibly his course was complicated by a stroke. Also, Uncle Frank may have developed PD before effective medications became available.

Abstract The chapter briefly traces the evolution of the Franc CFA Zone- a monetary union, which is one of the world’s longest surviving currency arrangement. It examines the implication of the four main principles of the monetary arrangements with the advantages and costs. It looks at the membership in CEMAC especially on how the agreement has impacted the financial sector and consequently CEMAC’s economy. The CEMAC’s economy is oil dominated and oil price shocks influence the region’s economic performance. The impact is seen in region’s limited intraregional trade, weak financial development and low private sector financing. The chapter, therefore, assesses the financial sector of the zone, and analyses the role of financial sector on the growth of the private sector and economic expansion. The results of the estimated model show the importance of the financial sector to the private sector. The chapter concludes that the weak financial sector/system of the CFA franc zone has hindered the economic expansion because of the limited private sector financing. Hence, economic diversification and financial development is essential in the regional economic expansion.

The chapter looks into the relations between Cushing and the Zuni, notably as portrayed in the sketches in the recent Zuni artist Phil Hughte. Zuni and other tribes remain divided over the role of Cushing at Zuni, often seeing either intrusive betrayal or attempted empathic understanding in it. Hughte indicates, often humorously or ironically, that typically these relations took place in mutual blindness but nonetheless also points to their more positive dimensions.

This chapter is essentially a case study that brings together the themes of law and identity, resilience and adaptation, empire, and ethnicity, highlighted in chapter 9. It zooms in on the various mechanisms employed to integrate the semi-independent polity of Aquitaine into the emerging Carolingian realm—and to deal with their significance in the sources composed in retrospect. Based around the “official” absorption of the duchy in 767/8, the chapter looks at the various modes of identification not only employed by the Aquitanians themselves but also visible within Carolingian chronicles, capitularies, and hagiographical narratives as they tried to make sense of this region, which was rich in Roman history but with a population that remained aware of its Visigothic and Basque roots as well.

This chapter examines the role of religion and theological debate in conservative liberalism and Ordo-liberalism. It looks at the ethical and strategic roles of religion: for Walter Eucken, Lutheran faith should act as a guide; for Friedrich Hayek, an agnostic, religion had instrumental value in gathering support. The central reference point of Ordo-liberalism was in Lutheran thought and Reformed Protestantism; their cross-national reach; the ascetic and austere moral seriousness they imparted to debates about civic virtue and the just economic order; and the effect on their attitudes to John Maynard Keynes and Joseph Schumpeter. The chapter shows how this link played a key role in the Freiburg resistance circles to the Third Reich; the work by Franz Böhm, Eucken, and others on the Bonhoeffer Memorandum; and the secularized Calvinism of James Buchanan and Frank Knight. The chapter also explores the complex and difficult relationship to Roman Catholic Scholastic thought, notably the concept of Ordo; to Catholic social thought as it evolved from the late nineteenth century, notably about social solidarity; and to Classical humanism, as represented by Stoicism; and the relatively late development of Lutheran social ethics. The challenge of building bridges to Catholicism has been a persistent concern, notably in the writings of Wilhelm Röpke. The chapter also looks at Catholic theologians who have engaged with Ordo-liberalism; the appeal of ‘thinking in orders’ within Catholicism; and successive relevant papal encyclicals. The chapter closes with reflections on the contemporary relevance of religion and its role in upholding the values of conservative liberalism and Ordo-liberalism.

Abstract A FeCrMnNi concentrated solid-solution alloy was irradiated with a 2 MeV proton beam up to 1 dpa and 6 dpa at temperatures of 400 °C and 600 °C. The microstructural changes induced by irradiation were characterized using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). In samples irradiated at 400 °C, Frank loops were the predominant form of lattice damage at 1 dpa, whereas small defect clusters were more prevalent at 6 dpa. For the sample irradiated to 1 dpa at 600 °C, both Frank loops and small defect clusters were present in similar density. Nanoindentation was employed to assess the changes in mechanical properties (hardness) post-irradiation, revealing significant hardening in all irradiated samples. The results indicated that the hardening effect began to saturate at 1 dpa or earlier. Additionally, nanoindentation creep tests with a 1200-second dwell period produced stress exponents comparable to those obtained from conventional creep testing. The findings suggest a shift in the deformation mechanism from dislocation glide to dislocation climb in the sample irradiated to 6 dpa at 400 °C.

The scaling down of commercial products has fueled the rapid development of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). The enabling technologies of surface micromachining for silicon has made it compatible with industry strategies towards integrated circuits used in actuation and controls of systems. During the silicon processing, microdefects do occur. If properly controlled, they act as gettering sites for metallic species and hence remove unwanted impurities in the active device regions of semiconductor devices. On the other hand, microdefects can be responsible for plastic deformation of silicon wafer. The occurrence of dislocations in the active device regions causes current leakage and even failure of devices. Determination of the optimum point at which bulk microdefects can be considered to have beneficial gettering effect in silicon wafer and the exact mechanisms by which mobile dislocations are generated in the bulk of an initially dislocation free silicon wafer are not well understood. The purpose of this study is to analyze types of dislocation misfits and the corresponding defect size that is responsible for effective gettering due to cavitation impacts. The authors have already studied electrical characteristics of backside damage gettering by cavitation impact [1–3]. Polysilicon has been grown on thin silicon suboxide layer by a gas-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). MBE was done by placing the silicon substrate in an ultra-high vacuum chamber and heating it to 800 °C for 10 min and then at 700 °C for 3 hours at a flow rate of 2.5 sccm. The atomic force microscopy (AFM), micro Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the Czochralski silicon (CZ–Si) in the plane (100) and poly-Si/SiO2 in the atomic scale before and after gettering the specimen. AFM results showed that the surface roughness and threshold deformation were 2.3 nm and 4.4 nm, respectively. Plan-view TEM analysis of silicon showed the coexistence of single dislocation and narrow dipoles. It can be concluded that cavitation impacts causes dislocation dipoles on CZ-Si(100) which are associated with dislocation loops. The initiation point takes the form of a micro Frank-Read dislocation source, less than 50 nm, that cause dislocation dipoles which are associated with dislocation loops. Plan view TEM observations reveal that the size of the dislocation misfits was approximately 100 nm. The polysilicon surface had a higher residual stresses when it was subjected to cavitation impacts. The cross-sectional TEM observation on poly-Si revealed random crystals on the noncavitated specimens while a mixer of columnar-textured grains on the specimen treated by cavitation. The textured grains have rough edges and the intra-grain size is about 40 nm. Deformation twins and set of streaks from an array of dislocations were observed in the cavitated poly-Si/SiO2 specimens. The spacing between the large grains was 8 nm.

Hydraulic fracturing is one of the key technologies for producing shale oil and gas. During hydraulic fracturing, a blender is used to mix sand with water and chemicals to obtain a fluidic mixture that will be pumped down a well to frack rocks. In order to achieve high-quality fracturing during a job, the blender needs to maintain its tub level as well as the density of the fluidic mixture. In this paper, an auto-tuning proportional-integral (PI) control is developed for the blender automation system to maintain the tub level of its fluidic mixture. The control system adopts a single-loop PI with gains that can be auto-tuned during a job. A relay feedback test is conducted for auto-tuning the PI gains online. The auto-tuning PI control has been successfully tested in a blender simulator. Experimental results have shown that the control performance was improved after auto-tuning and that the control system was adaptive to variation in system parameters.

Physical human-robot collaboration is increasingly required in many contexts. To implement an effective collaboration, the robot should be able to recognize the human’s intentions and guarantee safe and adaptive behavior along the intended motion directions. The robot-control strategies with such attributes are particularly demanded in the industrial field. Indeed, with this aim, this work proposes a Q-Learning-based Model Predictive Variable Impedance Control (Q-LMPVIC) to assist the operators in physical human-robot collaboration (pHRC) tasks. A Cartesian impedance control loop is designed to implement decoupled compliant robot dynamics. The impedance control parameters (i.e., setpoint and damping parameters) are then optimized online in order to maximize the performance of the pHRC. For this purpose, an ensemble of neural networks is designed to learn the modeling of the human-robot interaction dynamics while capturing the associated uncertainties. The derived modeling is then exploited by the model predictive controller (MPC), enhanced with stability guarantees by means of Lyapunov constraints. The MPC is solved by making use of a Q-Learning method that, in its online implementation, uses an actor-critic algorithm to approximate the exact solution. Indeed, the Q-learning method provides an accurate and highly efficient solution (in terms of computational time and resources). The proposed approach has been validated through experimental tests, in which a Franka EMIKA panda robot has been used as a test platform.
