Abstract The appearance of Hanna Bloch Kohner on a 1953 episode of the series This Is Your Life is among the earliest presentations of a Holocaust survivor's personal history on American television. Analysis of the program explores how television—a collaborative, corporate medium—shapes the telling of an individual's life story, and how the program relates the story of the Holocaust in terms of personal history. The article also examines how the program's producers employed television's distinctive characteristics to enable, limit, or otherwise shape the presentation of the Holocaust, and how the episode indicates that its creators understood its subject as being somehow singular, even as the conceptualization of the Holocaust was emerging, before the term Holocaust entered American public discourse. The article also considers how the program reflects the social and political context of post-World War II America in general and postwar American Jewish life in particular. Finally, the article considers how analysis of this program offers insight into other, later presentations of the Holocaust on American television, especially those dealing with the life story of an individual survivor. Purpose Both television and movie rating systems are used to inform parents, caregivers and prospective viewers about the content which will appear in a program. While rating systems are fallible, they do provide information prior to viewing. Unfortunately, television advertisements are not rated. Can a parent or caregiver feel confident that a child restricted to a particular level of viewing content will avoid being exposed to advertising content which exceeds the program rating? The purpose of this paper is to explore the content of advertisements relative to an established rating system. Design/methodology/approach Advertisements were assigned ratings based on the TV rating criteria. Comparisons between advertisement ratings and program ratings are provided. Additionally, advertisements are examined for unrated mature themes. Findings More than half of the advertisements analyzed across all program ratings were deemed appropriate for all audiences. However, it was discovered that advertisement content exceeded the content rating of the program during which it aired over 20 per cent of the time. Originality/value The findings show that the content of about one in every five television advertisements will have content that exceeds the content rating of the program in which the advertisement appears. This has the potential to undermine parental or caregiver restrictions on a child’s viewing content.

Background: We sought to improve the ability of incarcerated juveniles to critically evaluate media food messages through an educational program that focused on nutrition. Methods: Surveys were administered to two groups of inmates of both sexes (seven to 16 years). The program consisted of forty-one 50 minute sessions (three times per week for 15 weeks) focusing on media and nutrition. Results: None of the participants identified accurate nutrition information before the intervention. After the program, the intervention group (n = 16) identified inconsistencies between nutrition labeling and media messages better than the controls (n = 17). Intervention inmates also expressed a greater interest in learning more about nutrition and had a better understanding of how diet is a factor in health. Conclusions: Health professionals can design health promotion programs that have a positive impact on the inmates’ life while they are in custody, or after their release.

The Mountain State Centers for Independent Living states the Self- image is how one perceives oneself. The existence of Self- image is twisted and devoid of human feelings in Bradbury’s future-narrated Post literature universe. It is several numbers of self-impressions that develop over time that creates positive and concurrently unfavourable impacts. In the realm of psychology, Self-image is a pivotal factor in leading a fortunate life. An individual’s impression of himself forms the collective depiction of his strength and weakness. It is quintessential to talk about and compare the Self-image that Bradbury’s era had lived because self-image comprises not only one’s perception but also the intervention of the culture in which they lived. He lived in a timeline with World wars, Nazi book-burning, Stalin’s Great Purge, Nuclear warfare, and the technological development of radio and television. Bradbury found that these elements be disrupting the Self of an individual. This same connection can also be seen developing in the novel, where the government brainwashes the characters and makes them live a pre-programmed life. The interactions between the individuals are artificial and rare; they do not share any sense of feelings or the need to communicate. This diminishing effect of life is the disintegration of Self-image in the novel.

Islam is one of the divine religions that emphasizes the importance of da’wah (Islamic preaching) activities. Therefore, da'wah becomes one of the activities of every Muslim in his life. Da’wah can be done through various ways and media, both visual and audio visual, such as television and others. Television is very effective in delivering content of da’wah, because in this modern era television has been entering in almost all the homes of the people as audiences of da’wah. The most important is to display the right content with competent speakers, and with the right program or event as well. In this case, Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) Central Sulawesi created a program called Lentera Hati. This is a program of Islamic da’wah that is broadcasted on every Thursday at 20.00 pm. The content is delivered through the presentation of the material by a competent speaker. Thus, the goal of da’wah to the people of Central Sulawesi as audiences can be achieved.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the way teen pregnancy is portrayed in Seasons 1 and 2 of the television drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Framing theory and social cognitive theory were used as guiding frameworks for exploring the way the main character's pregnancy was presented and the way this presentation may influence the ideas and behaviors of viewers. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to examine portrayals in the first 23 episodes. Results indicated that teen pregnancy was portrayed in five major ways: as Dramatic, as Identity, as Manageable, as Transformative, and as Serious. Overall, the findings suggest that teen pregnancy was presented in ways that encourage viewers to perceive this issue as positive and negative, with clearly positive outcomes.

This study examines the home as a context of viewing for the television programme Intersexions in the township of Ginsberg in the Eastern Cape. The central question asked is whether the household influences the interpretation of the programme. The research was mainly conducted through ethnographical methods of participant observation and focus group interviews. Six families were observed and six gender-based focus groups convened. Drawing from the work of Morley (1986) and Lull (1990) that argues that the home be taken more seriously as a context of viewing; this study posits that the home is a rule-bound micro-society that influences the interpretation of media messages. As a starting point, this study contends with the arguments that the South African government has been slow to acknowledge the extent of the problem presented by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Much has been written about the inefficiency of state efforts to educate the public, with some pundits suggesting that government communications strategies have largely been outdated and thus resisted by audiences (Treffry-Goatley, Mahlinza & Imrie, 2013). To counter the pandemic, a large number of independent educational television serials have been launched in South Africa, and met with popular appeal since 1994. Furthermore, this development is in line with global trends of high audience ratings for Entertainment- Education (EE) programmes (Singhal et al., 1993). To investigate complex issue of EE reception by audiences in this burgeoning area of study, the programme at the centre of this study, Intersexions, is a good example. The serial, which concluded its second season in August 2013, is second to only the established soap opera, Generations, in television ratings in South Africa. Therefore, the impressive ratings garnered by educational serials in South Africa are a chance for audience studies to study audiences in context. This research investigates Intersexions using the understanding that television audiences must be analysed in "cultural and historic specific" sites because the struggle to make meanings of texts takes place at the moment when the text and subject meet (Fiske, 1987). This research investigates the assumption that the meanings made by audiences depend not just on the text, but also on environment. This means that the research delves into the situational context in which media are used and interpreted. Therefore, the central aim of this study is to analyse television viewing of the entertainment education programme, Intersexions, in the natural setting of the home, which is in line with analysing television viewers in cultural and historically specific sites.

This study examines stereotypes of fraternities and sororities in the media. Recently the media, particularly movies and television, has produced numerous portrayals of fraternal organi zations. Through thi s study a content analysis of the television show GREEK from ABC Family was conducted. The first seven episodes were analyzed answer the following questions: Were stereotypes of fratern ities and sororities pmirayed through these episodes? If so, what were the stereotypes? Five stereotypes were studied for fraternities and six for sororities. Definitions of the chosen stereotypes are identified in the literature and recorded. Tally markers were used to tabulate each portrayal of stereotypes. An average of the three viewings was then calculated to help maximize the reliability of this study. The results were further manipulated to determine the frequency of both the fraternity and sorority stereotypes individually as well as together. Stereotypes were found throughout the television series. Fraternity stereotypes were recorded more often than sorority stereotypes. This study allows us to better understand the portrayals of fraternity and sorority life as shown in GREEK.

On the way of popularizing one after another in the television channels, the advertisements of three ancient wireless channels are no longer popular.During the prosperous period of the three channels,as often as the operation begun, many advertisement owners or agents held a great deal of money, and then came to ask the television station to broadcast their advertisements. Moreover, not only the money problem, but also the degrees of the friendship, then got the priority of broadcasting. It is happening so fast that various media set up one by one soundlessly To this day, I’m gonna try to sum up all the cable TV & terrestrial TV,and then found the truth that there are more than 100 TV channels.Comparatively. The competition is certainly inevitable; additionally, people from various walks of life have no idea for worsening economic recession in recent years. Therefore. All the business items of TV stations are not as good as before;this certainly contains the main revenue - the advertisement service. Although budgets reduces and the conditions of market are bad, but it still be done for the necessary advertisements.Under such a bad condition whose budget reduced, how to achieve the same as before or more advertising effects is very important. In July 2004, Taiwan launched digital terrestrial television broadcasting that lead Taiwan television industry to diversified operation. The hardware of digital TV (DTV) transmission was established, but we still produce TV programs by traditional analogue ways. Hence, DTV programs should be produced more that can help audiences understand the value of DTV. The video clip project-“New Digital Life” which sponsor by Government Informant Office provided producers DTV programs producing environment to study DTV content production. The project help advance DTV producers which further their DTV related knowledge, technique and originality. I got a lot of experiences after joining the project. In this thesis, I will analyze technical aspect of DTV in the project and provide suggestion. There are different standards of digital terrestrial TV in the world. Taiwan adopts DVB-T(Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial) standard which feature in mobile receiving, MHP(Multimedia Home Platform), HDTV(High Definition Television). In this thesis, I will focus how to use DVB-T features in each step of producing DTV programs, especially in program planning and originality. In addition, the clip “New Digital Life” displays three types of TV program, drama, documentary, and animation. I will discuss “information gathering”, “content thinking”, “technique applying”, and “job arranging” in pre-producing, producing, and post-producing of the clip. I will discuss the anticipation of producer and audience when they saw the clip. The clip producing experience will also let me to discuss the predicament of producing DTV programs. DTV must be the pivot of home media center in the future. Simultaneously, it also will be an important communication duct between family and society. The future of DTV can be neglected, I will provide suggestion to the DTV related professional that depend on my experience of “New Digital Life” project.

Nowadays, the hosts are more important to convey information since the programs are increasing more than before. What information the host decides is related to their personality traits and life style in the period of information explosion. The role of the hosts is to choose from the mass information they have in order to transfer to their audiences. In the field of radio and television, communicator mostly refers to the host. Regarding the research of the host of radio and television show, many researchers focus on the study of message content and effect study. However, it is different from the past that the current study is to discuss the source of the communication process, which is the personality traits and life styles of the host. The relationship between the personality traits, life styles, and program types become clearer. In the respect of the personality traits, the study focuses on the personality of the host. In addition, regarding the life styles, this research emphasizes on the attitude and activities of the host. It is different from before that previous studies concentrate on the demographic variables. The personality traits of the host will have effect on the program styles which creates the uniqueness of the program from others. This study uses the research methods of qualitative and quantitative to realize the relationship among personality traits, life styles, programs types, and the host style on the host of radio and television. The hosts of the radio and TV are the main subjects of this study. One of the hosts who had won Golden Bell Award is the reference in this study. Furthermore, the study quantifies the questionnaire survey method to the radio show host, and the samples are focused in northern, central, and southern of the private radio stations in order to balance for regional consideration. Also, a revival of public radio station is taken into account. Seven TV show hosts are chosen to do in-depth qualitative interviews with different types of programs on radio and television show host personality traits and lifestyle research. The research findings are as follows: 1.The personality traits of the hosts of the radio and TV has a definite positive effect on the host style. 2.The life styles of the hosts of the radio and TV does not affect the host style. 3.The program types of the hosts of the radio and TV has a definite positive effect on the host style. Finally, implications and limitations in iterms of both theories and practices are proposed. Suggestions are also indicated for future studies.

This chapter addresses the four years Bubbles spent in Europe in the mid-1950s. After Buck and Bubbles broke up, Bubbles scrambled to make a living as a single. Hearing he could make a movie in Germany, he flew to Frankfurt. Although the movie didn’t pan out, he began performing for the Special Services, the US government’s entertainment program for American service members abroad. In time he fell in love and began living with a white dancer thirty years his junior named Aysha De Festa. When Mabel, his wife back home, found out, she conspired with Peter Lind Hayes, a rising name in daytime television, to bring Bubbles back to the States. Hayes invited Bubbles to join his act at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, and Bubbles accepted.

The place where most of us face the perception of reality in the pre-internet social life consists of a miraculous glowing box in the focal point of our rooms. Television is perhaps one of the most basic media tools that create our perception of reality by using the power of sound and image. The urge to believe what you see continues to make us addicted to this device. Television audience surveys in Turkey show that Turkish people watch television for an average of 4.5 hours a day. Considering that the average person works 8 hours a day and sleeps 8 hours, it is understood that people spend more than half of their free time in front of the television. With the use of the internet in all areas of social life, an average of 3 hours of leisure time consumption of people is devoted to social media. This situation reveals that television has a very serious competitor in directing our perception of reality. This study is about the construction of reality in the Survivor program, which is the most consumed competition program on Turkish television.

Television has never lost its popularity since the day it entered our life, unlike other mass media. One of the only reasons why television should maintain this feature is that the masses do not give up using it actively. Another thing that should be mentioned together with this is that this vehicle has been able to keep up with the changing media structure. Changing and evolving computer-based information tools and environments force communities to adapt. Media tools along with the communities have also taken their place. In this study, the program named Survivor, which is broadcasted on TV8 channel, will be questioned about the structure created by using transmedative narrative strategies. Supported by two television channels, websites, social media tools, forum sites, and smartphone applications, Survivor will be linked to the audience.

News anchors, talk show hosts, and soap opera characters often become objects of parasocial affection because of the nature of these program genres. This chapter explores the concept of parasocial interaction by focusing on audience replies to blog posts made on behalf of a TV character, Jessica Buchanan of ABC Television Network’s One Life to Live show. The authors employ communication accommodation theory to illuminate the concept and to identify specific communicative behaviors that occur during parasocial interaction. The chapter presents evidence of parasocial interaction within the blog replies and audience accommodation to the blog posts. Analysis suggests that parasocial interaction is the mediated manifestation of the relationship dimension inherent in television messages and used by audience members in much the same way it is used during face-to-face interaction.

Over the last decade, vast research has been conducted on assistive technology devices and the potential implementation of these devices in the daily lives of individuals with disabilities. Many devices are new to the public and may require further development, but it is important to disseminate information about these useful technologies, which often afford users more independence with their activities of daily living. Unfortunately individuals with disabilities often encounter stigma; research suggests that assistive technology devices may at times contribute to this ostracism. This chapter reviews a variety of technologies that have been used to improve the quality of life of individuals with varying disabilities. These devices are presented in the context of introducing a new children's television show, Realabilities, a pro-social and stop-bullying children's television program that seeks to enhance the social interaction and initiation of typical children towards children with disabilities. Directions for future research and implementation of these devices are also discussed.

Through the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, I have learned to appreciate the complexity of environmental dynamics when they are analyzed at multiple time and space scales. My experience as a postdoctoral fellow and in the LTER program facilitated much of my understanding of interdisciplinary research because of access to multiple disciplinary approaches and accumulation of long-term and multiple- scale information. My teaching of science benefited through recognition of the need for a combination of a deep understanding of each discipline’s role in an issue (reductionist approach) and the collaborative need for integrating disciplines to fully understand complexity. No single discipline can answer the complexity in an environmental question. I have improved my communication with the public through the combination of teaching and research reporting. The challenge is to develop the information in ways that can be communicated: free of scientific jargon, containing only essential data, and developed in scenarios that are recognized as real-life situations. The public has many forms and levels of understanding—there are K to gray and ordinary citizens and policy-makers; consequently, communication needs to be targeted appropriately. I value the role of collaboration; there is tremendous satisfaction and reward from working in teams that can accomplish so much more than can an individual. This collaboration requires compromise, interaction, and time, but those that strive for this approach to science are well recognized. I am fortunate in being in positions that have created opportunities for sustaining a long career in stimulating interdisciplinary and collaborative science. I had a traditional forest management and soil science education (Michigan Technological University and the University of Idaho). However, my entrée into ecosystem science was set up by my very valuable postdoctoral fellowship at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest under the guidance of Gene Likens from 1969 to 1970, before the formation of the LTER program. The Hubbard Brook experience, quite literally, educated me about systems thinking, with the watershed approach to understanding integrated responses from complex, multifactor interactions and influences of forest management as disturbances.

This chapter introduces two women and two closely affiliated organizations that would play a significant role in missionary contact with the Waorani. The women were a missionary, Rachel Saint (sister of slain pilot Nate Saint), and Dayomæ, a young Wao woman who was Rachel Saint’s language helper. The two organizations were the Wycliffe Bible Translators, a group raising funds and recruiting personnel to translate the Bible into the languages of tribal peoples, and the Summer Institute of Linguistics, which supervised the work of linguists and Bible translators recruited by WBT abroad. Both groups were founded by W. Cameron Townsend, a controversial religious entrepreneur committed to Bible translation as key to successful missionary work. In 1957 Rachel Saint and Dayumæ were introduced to American audiences through an appearance on the television program This Is Your Life. A second version of the “auca epic” began to emerge.

In this last decade of the twentieth century, hazards have become a part of everyday life as they have never been before. It is not that life, at least in advanced industrial societies, is more dangerous. Indeed, by any measure, the average person is safer and is likely to live longer and with greater leisure and well-being than at earlier times. Nevertheless, the external world seems replete with toxic wastes, building collapses, industrial accidents, groundwater contamination, and airplane crashes and near collisions. The newspapers and television news daily depict specific hazard events, and a parade of newly discovered or newly assessed threats—the "hazard-of-the-week" syndrome—occupies the attention of a host of congressional committees, federal regulatory agencies, and state and local governments. Seemingly any potential threat, however esoteric or remote, has its day in the sun. How is it, then, that certain hazards pass unnoticed or unattended, growing in size until they have taken a serious toll? How is it that asbestos pervaded the American workplace and schools when its respiratory dangers had been known for decades? How is it that after years of worry about nuclear war, the threat of a "nuclear winter" did not become apparent until the 1980s? How is it that the Sahel famine of 1983 to 1984 passed unnoticed in the hazard-filled newspapers of the world press, until we could no longer ignore the specter of millions starving? How is it that America "rediscovered" poverty only with Michael Harrington's vivid account of the "other Americans" and acknowledged the accumulating hazards of chemical pesticides only with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring1? How is it that during this century a society with a Delaney amendment and a $10 billion Superfund program has allowed smoking to become the killer of millions of Americans? And why is it that the potential long-term ecological catastrophes associated with burning coal command so much less concern than do the hazards of nuclear power? These oversights or neglects, it might be argued, are simply the random hazards or events that elude our alerting and monitoring systems. After all, each society has its "worry beads," particular hazards that we choose to rub and polish assiduously (Kates 1985).

Television images of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, snow and ice storms, and drought conditions are among the most vivid that leap into our minds when we think of short-term climatic events and their often obvious and direct ecosystem responses. The images are so striking that they tend to crowd out thoughts of longer term events. Yet, in many cases, even the longer term climatic events are often represented by the media as some manifestation of an individual severe weather event. The LTER sites have experienced a wide variety of severe weather events. Some of these are discussed in various chapters of this book. However, many other noteworthy instances are not treated in these pages. For example, we do not discuss the playa at the Jornada LTER site that has experienced a 100- year return period storm that filled the normally dry lake with water and brought to the fore many life forms that were surprising to Jornada investigators. Neither do we have room for the work at the Hubbard Brook LTER site by researchers who have documented in detail the effects on their trees of one of the most severe ice storms of the last century. Several other short-term climatic events, such as the 1996 flood at the Andrews rain forest, are discussed in the chapters of this book beyond this first section. In Part I the focus is on hurricanes, drought, and the shortterm climatic events and ecosystem responses in the Arctic LTER site in Alaska. Emery Boose of the Harvard Forest LTER in central Massachusetts introduces a Harvard Forest study on the effects of hurricanes on forest ecosystems in chapter 2. A strong hurricane passed over central New England in 1938 and left an indelible memory both in the minds of the inhabitants who experienced it and on the landscape. This stimulated Harvard Forest researchers to investigate the past history of hurricanes in their region and even to simulate a hurricane in their forest and study its effects on the ecosystem. The latter has become one of the legendary classic experiments of the LTER program.
