Abstract The author is dealing with the tile-stamps found in the Roman auxiliary fort at Porolissum attempting to establish which of the many units recorded on tile-stamps stayed in garrison at Porolissum. The author of the present article is arguing his own hypothesis on the subject, based on his own excavations at Porolissum and on all the data gathered from the scientific literature. He finally proposes two tables and a graph that correlate all the information on the troops known from the tile-stamps and stone inscriptions, establishing which of them were in garrison at Porolissum and which were only temporarily attached for building activity. At the same time he sets in chronological order the tile-stamps, demonstrating that the three units which built the headquarters building and the gates of the fort (coh III, L VII GF, L III G) were brought to the Porolissum area late in Hadrian‘s reign, to build in stone the fort and other military facilities in the limes area of Porolissum. The permanent garrison of the fort was composed during the 2nd century AD of two infantry auxiliary units, cohors I Brittonum and cohors V Lingonum, while a third one, numerus Palmyrenorum was probably lodged in a smaller fort situated 500 m away, on the Citera Hill. In the third century, cohors V Lingonum was still there, cohors I Brittonum also for Caracalla‘s time (even not recorded by any later inscription, but, at the same time, not attested in another fort), while the smaller Citera Hill fort was out of use and the numerus Palmyrenorum Porolissensium was moved inside the big fort from Pomet Hill. The author is concluding that the garrison of the military site Porolissum was not changed during the Roman rule in Dacia, all the other tile-stamps found belonging to units brought mainly during the 2nd century to built the military facilities of this strengthened sector of the frontier.

A multi-disciplinary research project has been begun in the fields next to the site of Tel Shalem (fig. 1), the locus of important discoveries since the 1970s (primarily the bronze statue of Hadrian). Recent geophysical prospections have detected the clear layout of a Roman fort and possibly even two successive forts. Two short excavation seasons carried out in 2017 and 2019, with a focus on the principia, resulted in finds that shed new light on the nature, history and identity of the site.

Ever since the discovery of a building inscription of a vexillatio of the legio VI Ferrata near Tel Shalem,1 it was clear that the area was a locus of Roman military activity. In the following years the vicinity of the Tel yielded the inscription of a Hadrianic arch whose letter-size is surpassed only by the lettering on the Pantheon and the Arch of Titus in Rome.2 Most recently, the headquarters complex of the fort (principia), and in particular the regimental shrine (aedes or sacellum), have been uncovered (see above). Within and in front of the aedes were found three inscriptions:3 a dedicatory inscription to Caracalla on a statue base in front of the building (no. 1), and two mosaic inscriptions inside, one at the entrance to the nave (no. 2), the other at its far end (no. 3). The fills covering the building produced stamped roof-tiles bearing three different formulae. The new inscriptions prove that the building was the aedes of the Ala VII Phrygum. The earliest attestation of its presence in Syria Palaestina is inferred from a military diploma of A.D. 1394 found at Apheka, not far from Tel Shalem. Assuming that the Ala Phrygum, attested without the number VII in the province of Syria up to A.D. 88,5 is the same unit as the Ala VII Phrygum of our inscriptions, its transfer to Iudaea is most likely to be associated with the suppression of the Bar Kokhba Revolt.6 The inscriptions published here provide the latest known date for its stay in Syria Palaestina, some 40 years after the latest date so far attested in military diplomas.7

Three archaeological excavations were undertaken by Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd within the grounds of Doune Primary School in Stirlingshire, each located on the site of Doune Roman fort. These excavations revealed sections through triple-ditched defences, elements of the turf rampart and the perimeter road (via sagularis) on both the west and east sides of the fort. Within the interior of the fort the partial foundations of seven buildings were recovered, including barracks blocks, a corridored building that may represent a workshop (fabrica) and a stable-barracks to accommodate a cavalry squadron (turma). The everyday life of the fort was also revealed, with a series of ovens and an iron-smelting shaft furnace, a first for Roman Scotland. A range of pits were also identified, including some which are likely to be related to the demolition of the fort as it was decommissioned. Artefacts confirm that the fort was built and occupied during the Flavian occupation of Scotland between AD 80 and 86–7.

ABSTRACTThis paper presents the results of a series of geophysical surveys of Roman forts and their environs carried out by the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust. An almost complete plan of the early wooden fort at Llanfor has been produced. Its densely-packed interior demonstrates heavy garrisoning, probably during very early Flavian campaigning. The small square auxiliary fort of Caer Llugwy has been shown to be a contraction of a larger rectangular fort. Surveys at Pennal, Caer Gai, and Canovium revealed a wide range of extramural development including vici in the form of ribbon development.

ABSTRACT Background Workplace-based assessment (WBA) is a key assessment strategy in competency-based medical education. However, its full potential has not been actualized secondary to concerns with reliability, validity, and accuracy. Frame of reference training (FORT), a rater training technique that helps assessors distinguish between learner performance levels, can improve the accuracy and reliability of WBA, but the effect size is variable. Understanding FORT benefits and challenges help improve this rater training technique. Objective To explore faculty's perceptions of the benefits and challenges associated with FORT. Methods Subjects were internal medicine and family medicine physicians (n=41) who participated in a rater training intervention in 2018 consisting of in-person FORT followed by asynchronous online spaced learning. We assessed participants' perceptions of FORT in post-workshop focus groups and an end-of-study survey. Focus groups and survey free text responses were coded using thematic analysis. Results All subjects participated in 1 of 4 focus groups and completed the survey. Four benefits of FORT were identified: (1) opportunity to apply skills frameworks via deliberate practice; (2) demonstration of the importance of certain evidence-based clinical skills; (3) practice that improved the ability to discriminate between resident skill levels; and (4) highlighting the importance of direct observation and the dangers using proxy information in assessment. Challenges included time constraints and task repetitiveness. Conclusions Participants believe that FORT training serves multiple purposes, including helping them distinguish between learner skill levels while demonstrating the impact of evidence-based clinical skills and the importance of direct observation.

This paper will aggregate and discuss some of those issues, including Fort Worth's attempt to balance the benefits and burdens of urban drilling. Section I will explain the significant advantages associated with increased production of natural gas. Section II will present a general overview of the Barnett Shale. Section III will detail some of the legal doctrines relative to oil and gas, land use, and water rights. Section IV will cover some of the potential environmental impacts of urban drilling on the community. Section V will review and analyze pertinent sections of Fort Worth's municipal drilling ordinance, along with some commentary regarding the effectiveness of the ordinance. Section VI will explore whether a prohibitive drilling ordinance rises to the level of a regulatory taking. Finally, a brief conclusion will be offered in Section VII weighing the benefits of urban gas production against the potential for environmental harm. Ultimately, this paper is driven by the need to define the proper balance between the advantages of increased natural gas production and the potential environmental and legal impacts of urban drilling. However, the balance depends on the proper regulation of urban drilling through prudent municipal ordinances. Municipalities must be vigilant in enforcing their police power by enacting effective drilling ordinances, but must also use discretion in order to avoid takings claims and conflicts with state laws, which have historically favored the dominance of the mineral estate.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance between the levels of pro-oxidants and the antioxidant defense, is involved in lymphomagenesis via chronic inflammation and is associated with a decrease in circulating levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. We evaluated oxidative stress levels in DLBCL patients by FORT (Free Oxygen Radicals Testing) and FORD assays (Free Oxygen Radical Defense), and investigated the relationship between oxidative stress markers and HDL-cholesterol levels. Our results suggest that oxidative stress and decreased levels of HDL-cholesterol might play a role in DLBCL pathogenesis via chronic inflammation.

Exercise causes alterations in redox homeostasis (ARH). Measuring ARH in elite athletes may aid in the identification of training tolerance, fatigued states, and underperformance. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have examined ARH in elite male and female distance runners at sea level. The monitoring of ARH in athletes is hindered by a lack of reliable and repeatable in-the-field testing tools and by the rapid turnaround of results. We examined the effects of various exercise intensities on ARH in healthy (non-over-reached) elite male and female endurance athletes using clinical point-of-care (POC) redox tests, referred to as the free oxygen radical test (FORT) (pro-oxidant) and the free oxygen radical defence (FORD) (antioxidant). Elite male and female endurance athletes (n = 22) completed a discontinuous incremental treadmill protocol at submaximal running speeds and a test to exhaustion. Redox measures were analyzed via blood sampling at rest, warm-up, submaximal exercise, exhaustion, and recovery. FORD was elevated above rest after submaximal and maximal exercise, and recovery (p < 0.05, d = 0.87–1.55), with only maximal exercise and recovery increasing FORT (p < 0.05, d = 0.23–0.32). Overall, a decrease in oxidative stress in response to submaximal and maximal exercise was evident (p < 0.05, d = 0.46). There were no gender differences for ARH (p > 0.05). The velocity at lactate threshold (vLT) correlated with the FORD response at rest, maximal exercise, and recovery (p < 0.05). Using the clinical POC redox test, an absence of oxidative stress after exhaustive exercise is evident in the nonfatigued elite endurance athlete. The blood antioxidant response (FORD) to exercise appears to be related to a key marker of aerobic fitness: vLT.

In 1990 Bender, Canfield and McKay gave an asymptotic formula for the number of connected graphs on [n] = {1,2,. . .,n} withmedges, whenevernand the nullitym−n+1 tend to infinity. LetCr(n,t) be the number of connectedr-uniform hypergraphs on [n] with nullityt= (r−1)m−n+1, wheremis the number of edges. Forr≥ 3, asymptotic formulae forCr(n,t) are known only for partial ranges of the parameters: in 1997 Karoński and Łuczak gave one fort=o(logn/log logn), and recently Behrisch, Coja-Oghlan and Kang gave one fort=Θ(n). Here we prove such a formula for any fixedr≥ 3 and anyt=t(n) satisfyingt=o(n) andt→∞ asn→∞, complementing the last result. This leaves open only the caset/n→∞, which we expect to be much simpler, and will consider in future work. The proof is based on probabilistic methods, and in particular on a bivariate local limit theorem for the number of vertices and edges in the largest component of a certain random hypergraph. We deduce this from the corresponding central limit theorem by smoothing techniques.

Abstract.

We included studies that report on avascular maxillary necrosis after any maxillary osteotomy used in the frame of orthognathic surgery. Results: Sixteen studies reporting a total of 65 patients with postoperative avascular maxillary necrosis were included. Those reported avascular necrosis in 32 female patients and 19 male patients. Multisegmented Le Fort I osteotomy was the most common type of related operation amongst the patients followed by single segment Le Fort I osteotomy. Conclusions: Although avascular maxillary necrosis is a very rare complication after maxillary orthognathic surgery it can be complicated with partial / complete loss of the maxilla. A personalized selection of the surgical technique should be made for any patient. Caution is warranted in cleft patients and in patients undergoing multisegmented Le Fort I osteotomies, so that the vitality of the maxilla and especially its anterior part is preserved. In the case when avascular necrosis arises, management should be immediate and precise. As for the reconstruction, it needs to be tailored according to the maxillary defect.

Resumo:
The foundations of Afro-European relations were laid in the first one hundred or so years of contact, the period from the 1440s to at least the 1550s during which Portuguese activities in Guinea proceeded without grossly damaging interference from other European powers. From 1482 up to the final disaster of capture by the Dutch in 1637, the fort of Sáo Jorge da Mina was the principal base for official Portuguese activities, ‘Mina’ being the conduit for the most extensive sea-export of gold. Despite its economic value to the crown, and its international status as the symbol of the Portuguese claim to sovereignty over Guinea and monopoly of the sea-export trade of western Africa, the fort had probably less lasting influence on early Afro-European relations than had the less heralded, and even more poorly recorded, activities of private Portuguese traders in western Guinea. Nevertheless, the history of the fort, when Portuguese, deserves close attention, and these two volumes by Joseph Bato'ora Ballong-wen-Mewuda represent a brave attempt to provide an analytical account.
