O'Hara, Joanne E. "Colen Campbell and the preparatory drawings for Vitruvius Britannicus". Thesis, University of York, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1572/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Colen Campbell (c.1676-1729) is remembered for his contribution to English architecture in the early eighteenth century, and most notably for his authorship of three volumes of the architectural book Vitruvius Britannicus. In recent interpretations, Campbell's part in this venture has been called into question, assigning him the role of a mere draughtsman, only promoted to author due to circumstantial pressures. This thesis aims to contribute to the existing scholarly work by taking into consideration the drawings for the production of Vitruvius Britannicus, which have hitherto remained understudied. These drawings will be used as the basis for my investigation of the production of Vitruvius Britannicus. I also supply the first catalogue raisonné of these drawings. Across five chapters, I trace the production of Vitruvius Britannicus in the order in which it occurred. This chronology is reflected in the structure of my thesis. Chapter I sets out the provenance of the Campbell drawings and investigates their purpose and technique, both in the categories of drawing for building and drawing for engraving. Chapter II presents the origins of the designs included by Campbell in Vitruvius Britannicus. Chapter III investigates possible origins of the book in Scotland, by looking at three disparate individuals who may have provided Campbell with graphic material or skills needed for the production. In addition, visual material Campbell certainly utilised when in London is analysed. Chapter IV considers the accuracy of the source material which Campbell adopted, drawing on specific remaining examples. Chapter V deals with the final stage of production, the transformation of the drawings to engravings. The engraver for Vitruvius Britannicus, Henry Hulsbergh, is investigated, as is another, unidentified, engraver who assisted in the production of volume I. I present a challenge to the recent interpretations of Vitruvius Britannicus, and add to the existing understanding of the role which Campbell played in the production. I develop a hitherto unexplored interpretation of the genesis of the book, emphasising Campbell's own Scottish origins, and promote the view that he was instrumental in the conceptualisation of its production from the earliest stages.

"Stroke continues to be a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Approximately 700,000 Americans have a new or recurrent stroke each year, and stroke remains the third leading cause of death in the United States when considered independently from other cardiovascular diseases. Stroke also remains a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States." (Schwamm, 2005, p.690) The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence based care management protocol for persons admitted to a small rural hospital with the symptoms or diagnosis of Ischemic Stroke. A committee was formed, evidence based best practices were identified, tools were developed and the protocol was implemented. The protocol was based on the Core Measures established by the Joint Commission and adopted by the centers for Medicare and Medicaid as a basis for validating quality and setting reimbursement. The protocol was successfully implemented; a process for the Quality Department of the facility was put in place to insure continued success.

Costandi, Samia. "The spiritual aspects of Joseph Campbell's hermeneutics in mythology : an examination leading to implications for religious education". Thesis, McGill University, 1994. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=68080.

Resumo:
Joseph Campbell's comparative studies in mythology revealed to him that culturally bred mythologies, despite their ethnic inflections, continually point to universal archetypes and a common human identity. Campbell's belief in the common human identity stems from his adherence to Carl Jung's mystical perspective on myth, where archetypes of the personal and collective unconscious help us understand humankind in the past, present and future. Myth, like art, Campbell believed, should be interpreted metaphorically, in terms of connotation instead of denotation. Failure to interpret myth poetically leads to religious, social, and political divisiveness. Examples of consequences of a literally interpreted mythology prevail in contemporary ethnic and global warring. This thesis examines the prominent themes in Campbell's alternative philosophy of mythology, and particularly the interpretation of some selected notions in Biblical mythology which, he suggests, have to be reviewed and re-interpreted metaphorically. With the collapse of cultural boundaries due to modernity, the world community needs a mythology for the whole planet. This thesis will discuss the serious implications for religious education of Campbell's hermeneutics of mythology.

Resumo:
The Lielmezs-Howell-Campbell (LHC) equation of state, originally proposed for saturated states, was further developed to study P-V-T and thermodynamic properties of 14 select pure fluids. Using the dimensionless T* coordinates: [See Thesis for Equation] two new temperature dependent functions, a(T*)⁻ and a(T *)[sup c], were proposed. Test comparisons were made between the LHC, Soave 1972, Redlich-Kwong, Lee-Kesler, Benedict-Webb-Rubin, and Boublik-Alder-Chen-Kreglewski equations for 14 organic, inorganic and quantal fluids over P-V-T ranges where available data permitted. The LHC equation performed as consistently and accurately as the 5 already established equations in calculating P-V-T properties, Joule-Thomson coefficients, inversion curve coordinates, fugacities, the two heat capacity, Cp and Cv, values as well as the thermodynamic departure functions of: enthalpy, entropy, internal energy, Gibbs and Helmholtz free energies. All results were compared on the bases of root mean square percent, RMS-%, error and the central processing unit (CPU) time. Finally, thermodynamic departure plots were produced using the LHC equation.

This essay investigates the applicability of Joseph Campbell’s notion of the Hero’s Journey from his theoretical work The Hero with a Thousand Faces on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again. This has been done by outlining the essential aspects of Campbell’s theory and then performing a reading and analysis of Tolkien’s work. Furthermore, this essay focuses on the narrative structure proposed by Campbell, but also the heroic character’s development—in this instance, Bilbo Baggins’ development. As such, a brief examination of Campbell’s attitude and use of Freudian psychoanalysis has been performed as well as a presentation of Bilbo Baggins’ character and dual nature before the adventure. As a possible line of argument Tolkien’s knowledge of myth is also briefly expounded on. This essay does not research or make any definitive statements on the universal applicability of Campbell’s theory, but merely finds that Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again appears to conform well to Campbell’s proposed narrative structure and that the development of Bilbo’s heroic character, or his character arc, is in concurrence with this as well.

Pigmentation disorders occur in multiple conditions (Hakozaki et al., 2006:105). Although many modalities of treatments are available, none are completely satisfactory (Briganti et al., 2003:101). Two cytokines normally present in the skin, transforming growth factor–beta1 (TGF–81) and tumour necrosis factor–alpha (TNF–9), have been shown to inhibit melanin synthesis (Martinez–Esparza, 2001:972). The stratum corneum has been commonly accepted as the main barrier to percutaneous absorption. Many techniques have been applied to overcome this barrier properties and to enhance penetration with varying success (Pellet et al., 1997:92). The objective of this study was to investigate the topical delivery of the above mentioned peptide drugs with aid of the Pheroid drug delivery system. Pheroid technology is a delivery system that promotes the absorption and increases the efficacy of dermatological, biological and oral medicines in various pharmacological groups (Grobler et al., 2008:4). Pheroid entraps drugs with high efficiency and delivers them with remarkable speed to target sites (Grobler, 2004:4). In order to avoid degradation of these peptides, bestatin hydrochloride (an aminopeptidase inhibitor), was used (Lkhagvaa et al., 2008:386). Topical drug delivery was achieved by means of vertical Franz cell diffusion studies performed over a 6 and 12 h period. ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) detection was used to detect cytokine concentrations. Entrapped cytokine solutions were monitored by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Upon removal of donor and receptor compartments, skin discs were subjected to tape stripping in order to establish the amount of active present within the stratum corneum and epidermis as well as the remaining dermis (Pellet et al., 1997:92). When comparing the two studies with each other, it is evident that the diffused concentration values obtained with PBS (phosphate buffer solution, pH 7.4) was lower than that obtained with the Pheroid drug delivery system. Both cytokine concentrations were successfully delivered topically as a minimum of concentrations for both actives were detected. This positive result was confirmed as well by the amount of active detected in stratum corneum–epidermis and epidermis–dermis solutions.

This dissertation aims at analyzing the autobiographies by Maria Campbell, Halfbreed, and Sally Morgan, My Place taking into consideration historical, political, ethnic and social aspects of Canada and Australia. Besides, this dissertation refers to the writers search for their Indigenous Canadian and Aboriginal Australian identities, respectively. To investigate the chosen theme, I approach the autobiographical genre emphasizing its historical context, its relationship to the autobiographical subject based on gender and ethnic issues. Concerning the analysis of gender issues it was necessary to refer to Feminist theories and criticism, whereas discussions regarding ethnic issues were based on Post-Colonial theory and criticism. In the analysis of Maria Campbells work I discuss issues related to autobiography, Canadian history and to Indigenous Canadian women. Halfbreeds analysis also considers the condition of the female Métis Canadian subject in search of identity, equality and dignity. As far as My Place is concerned, the analysis was a process which involved a study of the autobiographical genre from a female Aboriginal Australian perspective. The analysis raises questions related to the identity of the postcolonial subject and Australias historical context. My Places analysis also emphasizes Morgans search for identity and for her familys past, which is marked by memories, stories, pain, loss and hope.

Hinkle, Kurt Berlin. "An Automated Method for Optimizing Compressor Blade Tuning". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6230.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Because blades in jet engine compressors are subject to dynamic loads based on the engine's speed, it is essential that the blades are properly "tuned" to avoid resonance at those frequencies to ensure safe operation of the engine. The tuning process can be time consuming for designers because there are many parameters controlling the geometry of the blade and, therefore, its resonance frequencies. Humans cannot easily optimize design spaces consisting of multiple variables, but optimization algorithms can effectively optimize a design space with any number of design variables. Automated blade tuning can reduce design time while increasing the fidelity and robustness of the design. Using surrogate modeling techniques and gradient-free optimization algorithms, this thesis presents a method for automating the tuning process of an airfoil. Surrogate models are generated to relate airfoil geometry to the modal frequencies of the airfoil. These surrogates enable rapid exploration of the entire design space. The optimization algorithm uses a novel objective function that accounts for the contribution of every mode's value at a specific operating speed on a Campbell diagram. When the optimization converges on a solution, the new blade parameters are output to the designer for review. This optimization guarantees a feasible solution for tuning of a blade. With 21 geometric parameters controlling the shape of the blade, the geometry for an optimally tuned blade can be determined within 20 minutes.

Campbell. N. Moody(1865-1940) was an important person while English Presbyterian Mission developed in central Taiwan. In 1895, he went to Taiwan due to vocation that found from Overseas missionary movement. He was assigned to central Taiwan doing missionary work. David Landsborough (1870-1957) was his partner at the time. During the Japanese-ruled Period , the region that he did missionary work was located in Taichung State, the center of this area was Chiang-hoa city. He preached and established churches intermittently at mid-Formosa from 1895 to 1924, add up to18 years. During this period, 20 churches were established, which was the backbone of Presbytarian churches of Taichung when Taichung Presbytarian churches were started in the year 1930. Therefore, the effort Moody had made can not be neglected. The most work Moody did was to preach, as well as Christians and local preachers education. Moreover, he encouraged that Taiwan churches could be self-supporting , then preparing to be independent. He preached day by day, which has remained an obvious image. “God’s son was missing” was a famous sentence what he said. The most challenge for him was education. In order to help Taiwan christians appreciate Orthodox Christianity-- based on Reformed Theology, he wrote a book “TÂM-LŪN TŌ-LÍ ” to teach them what is Christian doctrine. This book was considered to be Taiwan edition of Catechism of Reformed theology. Moreover, he compiled a book named : “LÔ͘-MÁ-PŌE”, which including the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith and be sanctified . His expectation was to strengthen preachers’ sermon of contents through this book. He was a model of offering in terms of church self-supporting. Jesus behaved in Bible, he followed suit due to implicit faith in God. In addition, this behavior helped churches establish the faith community. Chapter Four analyzed Moody’s theology which came from his pe̍h-ōe-jī (Taiwanese) books. This is a study of his thinking about God, salvation of Jesus, and the guide of life by Holy spirit. His theological thought was based on Reformed theology and Puritan theology. However, Moody needed to respond to the fact that Taiwan christians had their cultural and region’s heritage. He considered that believers divided two groups, one has ”consciousness of sin” while the other not. For believers who had not consciousness of sin, he highlighted the existence of God, and used stories or christian testimonies that contain Reformed theology creeds in his sermons. For those believers who had consciousness of sin, he preached about God’s forgiveness as well as the contents and text of Bible in depth. His activity awoke missionaries that testimony can be a significant force.

Wood, Callie. "Creating both text and music for oratorios: portfolio of compositions and exegesis". Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/82035.

Resumo:
This composition portfolio and exegesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, contains original creative works supported by a comprehensive commentary. The submission consists of one volume in two parts containing primary materials of original libretti and musical scores, and the secondary component of an explanatory exegesis. Part A includes the major oratorio work, called Bushfire Oratorio, as well as two small oratorio studies or minor works, called Bright Star: Estelle and Lionheart: The Threshold. Part B is comprised of an exegesis, which provides a commentary on the genesis, libretti writing and composition approaches, limitations and elucidations of the original works in the portfolio. Appendices follow the exegesis and include a list of sources, compact discs of sound recordings, and several other compositions relevant to the research. The purpose of the research was to investigate composing both the text and the music for oratorios linked by the archetypal literary form of the hero’s journey. The research method combined the creative roles of librettist and composer and, in doing so, facilitated a deeper understanding of the genre today. The disciplines of creative writing and musical composition overlap in this work and it is the convergence of these distinct trajectories in oratorio that was the focus of the research.

Timonin, Mary Elizabeth. "Developmental, but not activational, roles for estradiol and its receptor in paternal and sexual behaviour of Phodopus campbelli males". Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/1436.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The neuroendocrine basis of paternal behaviour is hypothesised to be homologous to that of maternal behaviour, with the expression of paternal behaviour resulting from the activation of estrogen-sensitive pathways in the brain. However, despite the fact that Phodopus campbelli fathers are highly paternal, previous studies have failed to identify an activational role for estradiol in the expression of this behaviour. The goal of this thesis was to exclude or define a role for estradiol in P. campbelli paternal behaviour. In the first study, estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) expression was examined in three brain regions relevant to maternal behaviour (medial preoptic area, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, and medial amygdala). Male and female P. campbelli and its close relative P. sungorus were sampled as sexually naïve adults, following mating to satiety, or as new parents. As predicted, new fathers of either species did not upregulate ERα expression in these brain regions. Mating also had no effect on ERα expression in males or females from either species. However, ERα expression was also not upregulated in any of the three brain regions in new mothers. Thus, it is possible that estradiol does not play a primary role in activating maternal behaviour in Phodopus females. In the second study, P. campbelli males were administered the aromatase inhibitor letrozole at three different developmental stages (independence from the mother, testicular maturation, and sexually naïve adult) and tested for adult sexual and paternal behaviour. Aromatase inhibition during juvenile development resulted in diminished expression of adult paternal and sexual behaviour, suggesting that estradiol acts at critical periods in development to organize the paternal brain for subsequent behavioural responses. Treatment of sexually naïve adults did not alter male behaviour, which further supports previous evidence that estradiol does not activate paternal behaviour in P. campbelli males, although sexual behaviour in females is completely estradiol-dependent in this species. These findings suggest that the activational roles of estradiol in maternal and male sexual behaviour identified in the rat do not generalize to Phodopus, and imply greater species to species variation in the neuroendocrine control of these behaviours than previously suspected.

Vibrio bacteria are one of the major pathogens causing significant economic losses in aquaculture each year, so vaccines are often used in high-economic species to prevent Vibrio outbreaks. The recombinant protein vaccine uses a high-purity effective antigen to provide long-lasting protection. In previous studies, a highly immunogenic protein, Vibrio campbellii Heat shock protein 60 (VcHSP60), has been identified by immunoproteomics. Some studies also revealed that HSP60 can be used as a vaccine antigen to provide immune protection for mice and salmon. Therefore, this study was to investigate the efficacy of VcHSP60 as a subunit vaccine and its molecular mechanism of high immunogenicity. We expressed and purified the VcHSP60 recombinant protein, which was used to prepare a vaccine and then applied to grouper fish. The results confirmed that VcHSP60 did induce high serum titers of specific antibodies and provided fish immune protection against Vibrio campbellii. In addition, the VcHSP60-induced serum antibodies can cross-identify the HSP60 proteins of other marine pathogens, indicating its potential to be developed as a broad-spectrum vaccine. In this study, protein crystallography and small-angle X-ray scattering were utilized to solve the protein structure of VcHSP60, and the distribution of VcHSP60 epitops was identified by cross-linking coupled mass spectrometry. Five fragments on VcHSP6 showed higher antibody-binding affinity, indicating that these fragments might be the specific antibody-antigen recognition sites. These results could be ultilized to design the VcHSP60 vaccine for reducing the economic losses caused by fish diseases.

Coullie, Judith Lutge. "Self, life and writing in selected South African autobiographical texts". Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/8638.

Resumo:
Autobiographical writing acquired increasing importance during the apartheid period, with greater numbers of autobiographical texts being published by a more representative range of South Africans across race, class and gender categories. This thesis analyzes the implications of shifts in autobiographical production, in English, during the years 1948-1994 through the examination of selected texts. The readings are informed by poststructuralism, modified by information about indigenous black South African cultural practices, as well as by input supplied by some of the autobiographical texts themselves. This theoretical approach may be referred to as a "pratique de metissage" (Glissant). The texts selected for close reading are from a field of over 120 autobiographical texts. They were chosen for their ability to illustrate important trends in South African autobiographical writing, specifically with regard to the three constituent parts of autobiography: autos, bios, and graphe. The chapter dealing with the depiction of self interrogates the hierarchized discourses of male-biased humanism in Roy Campbell's Light on a Dark Horse (1951). In Ellen Kuzwayo's Call Me Woman (1985) I analyze the melding of the conceptual frameworks of indigenous black cultures and Western individualism by which the autobiographical subject is defined. Breyten Breytenbach's The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist (1984) is read as an exploration of the postmodernist decentred self. In the chapter focusing on the portrayal of life experiences, I examine the ways in which the narrator of Albert Luthuli's Let My People Go (1962) seeks to secure the reader's approval of his version of recent South African history; while the analysis of the sub-genre referred to here as worker autobiography is principally concerned with the politics of life-writing. In Chapter 5, I look at how Godfrey Moloi's My Life: Volume One (1987) uses the discourses of popular American movies of the 40s and 50s in order to validate a self victimized by racism, and also at the ways in which Lyndall Gordon's Shared Lives (1992) probes the limits and possibilities of biography through autobiographical speculation. In general, apartheid autobiography moves away from individualism to contribute, through various means, to social and political change.
