This project proposes to develop an improved system to process Soldiers at the Personnel Processing Center (PPC) located at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. This processing center is the final pre-deployment requirement prior to missions in support of the Global War on Terror. The PPC services the 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell’s tenant units and receives a high volume of Soldiers for processing. It is in the interest of Soldiers, their families, and senior leadership to process deploying troops accurately and rapidly. The current system, though functioning and meeting the Army’s needs, has inherent inefficiencies that limit its capacities and ability to maximize utilization.

The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) has been developing and adopting improved sludge dewatering systems for U.S. Army wastewater treatment plants. USACERL selected reed beds as the best alternative for future Army sludge dewatering systems based on the system's economical and technical feasibility and on a demonstration of the technology at Fort Campbell, KY, USA. This paper compares the Army's options for upgrading Fort Campbell's sand-drying beds, analyzes costs, discusses sludge hydraulic and solids loading rate data from existing reed bed operations in the United States, and presents 5 years' operational data from Fort Campbell. Options considered for comparison included: land application of sludge at training fields, wedgewater beds, vacuum-assisted beds, wedgewater beds and composting, mechanical dewatering systems, and a “no change” option in which sand-drying beds would have been retained. In conclusion, this paper summarizes advantages and limitations of reed bed sludge dewatering. Advantages of reed beds may include: low investment especially when sand-drying beds are converted to reed beds, savings of sludge removal costs, and the benefits inherent to using a simple and economical technology. Limitations may include: large land requirements and little scientific understanding of this empirical technology. The challenge will be to further develop appropriate disposal technologies to meet new U.S. sludge regulations.

The Nipawin delta extends eastward from the town of Nipawin in east-central Saskatchewan. The Prince Albert and Fort à la Corne deltas formed in Lake Saskatchewan at the mouths of the South and North Saskatchewan rivers, whereas the Nipawin and Mossy vale deltas formed in Lake Agassiz at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River. These deltas became lower in elevation and younger eastward. Clays beneath the Nipawin and Mossyvale deltas can be traced beneath the Prince Albert and Fort à la Corne deltas with little change in thickness, suggesting that most of the clays beneath the Nipawin and Mossyvale deltas were deposited during the formation of the Prince Albert and Fort à la Corne deltas. The Nipawin delta formed between 10 200 and 9500 BP. The Campbell strandline (Emerson phase) was the shoreline of the Nipawin delta. The Mossyvale delta formed about 9500 BP. The surface of the Mossyvale delta (McCauleyville level) is about 40 m below the surface of the Nipawin delta (Campbell level).

A strong earthquake was recorded by Hudson's Bay Company trader–explorer Robert Campbell on December 27, 1850 at Fort Selkirk, Yukon Territory. A search of records from the region failed to find any other record of the earthquake. The duration of shaking and lack of aftershocks at Fort Selkirk suggest that the earthquake exceeded magnitude 6 and did not have a local source. The modified Mercalli intensity of VI or greater at Fort Selkirk is not compatible with lower intensities experienced there from large earthquakes along the plate margin and in the Mackenzie Mountains. The Denali fault system in southwestern Yukon and the southern Richardson Mountains are the most likely sources of the earthquake.

Resumo:
Colen Campbell (c.1676-1729) is remembered for his contribution to English architecture in the early eighteenth century, and most notably for his authorship of three volumes of the architectural book Vitruvius Britannicus. In recent interpretations, Campbell's part in this venture has been called into question, assigning him the role of a mere draughtsman, only promoted to author due to circumstantial pressures. This thesis aims to contribute to the existing scholarly work by taking into consideration the drawings for the production of Vitruvius Britannicus, which have hitherto remained understudied. These drawings will be used as the basis for my investigation of the production of Vitruvius Britannicus. I also supply the first catalogue raisonné of these drawings. Across five chapters, I trace the production of Vitruvius Britannicus in the order in which it occurred. This chronology is reflected in the structure of my thesis. Chapter I sets out the provenance of the Campbell drawings and investigates their purpose and technique, both in the categories of drawing for building and drawing for engraving. Chapter II presents the origins of the designs included by Campbell in Vitruvius Britannicus. Chapter III investigates possible origins of the book in Scotland, by looking at three disparate individuals who may have provided Campbell with graphic material or skills needed for the production. In addition, visual material Campbell certainly utilised when in London is analysed. Chapter IV considers the accuracy of the source material which Campbell adopted, drawing on specific remaining examples. Chapter V deals with the final stage of production, the transformation of the drawings to engravings. The engraver for Vitruvius Britannicus, Henry Hulsbergh, is investigated, as is another, unidentified, engraver who assisted in the production of volume I. I present a challenge to the recent interpretations of Vitruvius Britannicus, and add to the existing understanding of the role which Campbell played in the production. I develop a hitherto unexplored interpretation of the genesis of the book, emphasising Campbell's own Scottish origins, and promote the view that he was instrumental in the conceptualisation of its production from the earliest stages.

Stroke also remains a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States." (Schwamm, 2005, p.690) The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence based care management protocol for persons admitted to a small rural hospital with the symptoms or diagnosis of Ischemic Stroke. A committee was formed, evidence based best practices were identified, tools were developed and the protocol was implemented. The protocol was based on the Core Measures established by the Joint Commission and adopted by the centers for Medicare and Medicaid as a basis for validating quality and setting reimbursement. The protocol was successfully implemented; a process for the Quality Department of the facility was put in place to insure continued success.

Joseph Campbell's comparative studies in mythology revealed to him that culturally bred mythologies, despite their ethnic inflections, continually point to universal archetypes and a common human identity. Campbell's belief in the common human identity stems from his adherence to Carl Jung's mystical perspective on myth, where archetypes of the personal and collective unconscious help us understand humankind in the past, present and future. Myth, like art, Campbell believed, should be interpreted metaphorically, in terms of connotation instead of denotation. Failure to interpret myth poetically leads to religious, social, and political divisiveness. Examples of consequences of a literally interpreted mythology prevail in contemporary ethnic and global warring. This thesis examines the prominent themes in Campbell's alternative philosophy of mythology, and particularly the interpretation of some selected notions in Biblical mythology which, he suggests, have to be reviewed and re-interpreted metaphorically. With the collapse of cultural boundaries due to modernity, the world community needs a mythology for the whole planet. This thesis will discuss the serious implications for religious education of Campbell's hermeneutics of mythology.

The Lielmezs-Howell-Campbell (LHC) equation of state, originally proposed for saturated states, was further developed to study P-V-T and thermodynamic properties of 14 select pure fluids. Using the dimensionless T* coordinates: [See Thesis for Equation] two new temperature dependent functions, a(T*)⁻ and a(T *)[sup c], were proposed. Test comparisons were made between the LHC, Soave 1972, Redlich-Kwong, Lee-Kesler, Benedict-Webb-Rubin, and Boublik-Alder-Chen-Kreglewski equations for 14 organic, inorganic and quantal fluids over P-V-T ranges where available data permitted. The LHC equation performed as consistently and accurately as the 5 already established equations in calculating P-V-T properties, Joule-Thomson coefficients, inversion curve coordinates, fugacities, the two heat capacity, Cp and Cv, values as well as the thermodynamic departure functions of: enthalpy, entropy, internal energy, Gibbs and Helmholtz free energies. All results were compared on the bases of root mean square percent, RMS-%, error and the central processing unit (CPU) time. Finally, thermodynamic departure plots were produced using the LHC equation.

This essay investigates the applicability of Joseph Campbell’s notion of the Hero’s Journey from his theoretical work The Hero with a Thousand Faces on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again. This has been done by outlining the essential aspects of Campbell’s theory and then performing a reading and analysis of Tolkien’s work. Furthermore, this essay focuses on the narrative structure proposed by Campbell, but also the heroic character’s development—in this instance, Bilbo Baggins’ development. As such, a brief examination of Campbell’s attitude and use of Freudian psychoanalysis has been performed as well as a presentation of Bilbo Baggins’ character and dual nature before the adventure. As a possible line of argument Tolkien’s knowledge of myth is also briefly expounded on. This essay does not research or make any definitive statements on the universal applicability of Campbell’s theory, but merely finds that Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again appears to conform well to Campbell’s proposed narrative structure and that the development of Bilbo’s heroic character, or his character arc, is in concurrence with this as well.

Resumo:
Pigmentation disorders occur in multiple conditions (Hakozaki et al., 2006:105). Although many modalities of treatments are available, none are completely satisfactory (Briganti et al., 2003:101). Two cytokines normally present in the skin, transforming growth factor–beta1 (TGF–81) and tumour necrosis factor–alpha (TNF–9), have been shown to inhibit melanin synthesis (Martinez–Esparza, 2001:972). The stratum corneum has been commonly accepted as the main barrier to percutaneous absorption. Many techniques have been applied to overcome this barrier properties and to enhance penetration with varying success (Pellet et al., 1997:92). The objective of this study was to investigate the topical delivery of the above mentioned peptide drugs with aid of the Pheroid drug delivery system. Pheroid technology is a delivery system that promotes the absorption and increases the efficacy of dermatological, biological and oral medicines in various pharmacological groups (Grobler et al., 2008:4). Pheroid entraps drugs with high efficiency and delivers them with remarkable speed to target sites (Grobler, 2004:4). In order to avoid degradation of these peptides, bestatin hydrochloride (an aminopeptidase inhibitor), was used (Lkhagvaa et al., 2008:386). Topical drug delivery was achieved by means of vertical Franz cell diffusion studies performed over a 6 and 12 h period. ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) detection was used to detect cytokine concentrations. Entrapped cytokine solutions were monitored by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Upon removal of donor and receptor compartments, skin discs were subjected to tape stripping in order to establish the amount of active present within the stratum corneum and epidermis as well as the remaining dermis (Pellet et al., 1997:92). When comparing the two studies with each other, it is evident that the diffused concentration values obtained with PBS (phosphate buffer solution, pH 7.4) was lower than that obtained with the Pheroid drug delivery system. Both cytokine concentrations were successfully delivered topically as a minimum of concentrations for both actives were detected. This positive result was confirmed as well by the amount of active detected in stratum corneum–epidermis and epidermis–dermis solutions.

This dissertation aims at analyzing the autobiographies by Maria Campbell, Halfbreed, and Sally Morgan, My Place taking into consideration historical, political, ethnic and social aspects of Canada and Australia. Besides, this dissertation refers to the writers search for their Indigenous Canadian and Aboriginal Australian identities, respectively. To investigate the chosen theme, I approach the autobiographical genre emphasizing its historical context, its relationship to the autobiographical subject based on gender and ethnic issues. Concerning the analysis of gender issues it was necessary to refer to Feminist theories and criticism, whereas discussions regarding ethnic issues were based on Post-Colonial theory and criticism. In the analysis of Maria Campbells work I discuss issues related to autobiography, Canadian history and to Indigenous Canadian women. Halfbreeds analysis also considers the condition of the female Métis Canadian subject in search of identity, equality and dignity. As far as My Place is concerned, the analysis was a process which involved a study of the autobiographical genre from a female Aboriginal Australian perspective. The analysis raises questions related to the identity of the postcolonial subject and Australias historical context. My Places analysis also emphasizes Morgans search for identity and for her familys past, which is marked by memories, stories, pain, loss and hope.

Chapter three deepens Campbell’s story by considering the emergence of her first novel Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine. The content of Your Blues is connected to racial consciousness and concern for racial violence that Campbell develops as a college student during the Black Liberation period. The recurrent themes in Your Blues reveal a direct relationship to Campbell’s activism at the University of Pittsburgh. Finally, the chapter also highlights the emergence of Campbell’s signature style of integrating specific historical, social, and political themes into all her fictional writing.

Abstract A new method for decomposition of vibration signals measured on rotating machinery is presented in this paper. The method uses a signal measured from a number of sensors to decompose the spatial response according to the direction of the progression of motion, the frequency content and the various wavelengths. For the simple case of shaft vibration, two sensors, horizontal and vertical, are used to separate the vibration pattern into forward and backward progressing components. For the case of a rotating disc, more sensors are required to further decompose the response into different wavelengths. This allows one to monitor and to identify potentially dangerous vibration patterns exhibiting large backward components. The method is shown to provide better resolution in the time-frequency (speed of rotation) and spatial domains by separating several, usually overlapping patterns. Several analytical and experimental results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

The eye suffers from about 2D of longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA). However, the blur that would be expected to result from this aberration has little effect on visual acuity (VA), largely because the eye’s lower spectral sensitivity at the extremes of the spectrum reduces the effect of the out-of-focus blur associated with the chromatic aberration (Campbell and Gubisch, 1967), although depth-of-focus (DOF) in white light is slightly greater than that in monochromatic light (Campbell, 1957).

Abstract An important precursor to the dynamic analysis of rotating machinery, in either frequency or time domain, is the extraction of its mode shapes and corresponding frequencies. This is often presented as a Campbell diagram, which plots the frequency of each mode as a function of the rotor speed. A typical Campbell diagram has several backward whirl, linear and forward whirl modes leading to numerous intersections. Therefore augmenting the eigenvalue solution with a mode tracking algorithm to output the Campbell diagram is of essential interest to a practicing engineer. This paper presents an evaluation of several mode tracking approaches for rotor dynamic simulations, starting from their theoretical foundations to practical applications using several test cases. These tracking algorithms are implemented in the structural solver, OptiStruct, part of Altair Engineering’s CAE framework. Finally, the conclusions drawn from this exercise offer engineers studying rotating machinery several key insights.

Abstract Turbo machinery rotating blades are a vital component of aero-engines for transferring the energy of gas flow to kinetic energy. Rotating turbo-machinery blades are prone to fail under working fields with high temperature, high speed, high pressure and resonance of blades with prime engine. Vibration of the turbo-machinery blades need to be studied carefully for safe and reliable operation of the engine. Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) layers are used to protect the blade metal at higher operating temperature though these can be plagued due to phase instability, thermal instability and adherence problems. TBCs also tend to spall due to thermal expansion mismatch with the super alloy substrate or because of erosion/impact caused by particles in the high-velocity combustion gases. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are a relatively new class of materials that can solve these problems in high-temperature environments and can be considered as potential material for making gas turbine blades. Unlike composite materials the functionally graded materials (FGMs) are free from delamination and debonding and have the ability to withstand high temperature without TBC coatings. In this present study natural frequency of the FGM turbine blade for various rotational speeds during actual operation is determined using finite element technique. As the aero-engine is complex in nature therefore harmonic resonance can always occur in the aero-engine system and it is difficult to determine the natural frequency at varying speed during actual operation. The chances of failure of the blade also increase because of harmonic resonance. Hence, the resonance property is required to investigate of the FGM blade in details. Various rotational speed and operating temperature is considered to determine the natural frequencies of the blade. The resonance studies for each case are performed using the Campbell diagram. Resonance margin is calculated for each case and safe operating speed is determined. This study could serve as ready reference for safe operation of turbo-machinery engine considering FGM blade for specific range of engine speed.

This report summarises findings from an evidence and gap map (EGM) commissioned by the Department for International Development (DFID) and undertaken by the Campbell Collaboration (Campbell) and the International Centre for Evidence and Disability (ICED). An EGM is a table which offers a visual presentation of the available evidence for a particular sector. The map provides an overview of what studies are available, but it does not summarise the findings. In the disability map the rows are intervention categories and the columns are indicator (outcome) domains. The framework for the EGM – interventions and outcomes – are based on the components of WHO’s Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) matrix (Figure 1) (WHO, 2010). Both interventions and outcomes use the same set of headings, that is: health, education, livelihood, social and empowerment.

Resumo:
Theodore Roosevelt National Park (THRO) in western North Dakota was established for its historical connections with President Theodore Roosevelt. It contains not only historical and cultural resources, but abundant natural resources as well. Among these is one of the best geological and paleontological records of the Paleocene Epoch (66 to 56 million years ago) of any park in the National Park System. The Paleocene Epoch is of great scientific interest due to the great mass extinction that occurred at its opening (the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event), and the unusual climatic event that began at the end of the epoch (the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, an anomalous global temperature spike). It is during the Paleocene that mammals began to diversify and move into the large-bodied niches vacated by dinosaurs. The rocks exposed at THRO preserve the latter part of the Paleocene, when mammals were proliferating and crocodiles were the largest predators. Western North Dakota was warmer and wetter with swampy forests; today these are preserved as the “petrified forests” that are one of THRO’s notable features. Despite abundant fossil resources, THRO has not historically been a scene of significant paleontological exploration. For example, the fossil forests have only had one published scientific description, and that report focused on the associated paleosols (“fossil soils”). The widespread petrified wood of the area has been known since at least the 19th century and was considered significant enough to be a tourist draw in the decades leading up to the establishment of THRO in 1947. Paleontologists occasionally collected and described fossil specimens from the park over the next few decades, but the true extent of paleontological resources was not realized until a joint North Dakota Geological Survey–NPS investigation under John Hoganson and Johnathan Campbell between 1994–1996. This survey uncovered 400 paleontological localities within the park representing a variety of plant, invertebrate, vertebrate, and trace fossils. Limited investigation and occasional collection of noteworthy specimens took place over the next two decades. In 2020, a new two-year initiative to further document the park’s paleontological resources began. This inventory, which was the basis for this report, identified another 158 fossil localities, some yielding taxa not recorded by the previous survey. Additional specimens were collected from the surface, among them a partial skeleton of a choristodere (an extinct aquatic reptile), dental material of two mammal taxa not previously recorded at THRO, and the first bird track found at the park. The inventory also provided an assessment of an area scheduled for ground-disturbing maintenance. This inventory is intended to inform future paleontological resource research, management, protection, and interpretation at THRO. THRO’s bedrock geology is dominated by two Paleocene rock formations: the Bullion Creek Formation and the overlying Sentinel Butte Formation of the Fort Union Group. Weathering of these formations has produced the distinctive banded badlands seen in THRO today. These two formations were deposited under very different conditions than the current conditions of western North Dakota. In the Paleocene, the region was warm and wet, with a landscape dominated by swamps, lakes, and rivers. Great forests now represented by petrified wood grew throughout the area. Freshwater mollusks, fish, amphibians (including giant salamanders), turtles, choristoderes, and crocodilians abounded in the ancient wetlands, while a variety of mammals representing either extinct lineages or the early forebearers of modern groups inhabited the land. There is little representation of the next 56 million years at THRO. The only evidence we have of events in the park for most of these millions of years is isolated Neogene lag deposits and terrace gravel. Quaternary surficial deposits have yielded a few fossils...
