Resumo:
This study was conducted during the first year of the implementation of the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) in Grade Five in South Africa. It is compulsory for teachers to implement the RNCS in this country. Investigations play a central role in learning in science education, and this study focuses on the Assessment Standard of Learning Outcome 1 in the Natural Sciences Learning Area that relates to children's abilities to ask questions that they can investigate themselves. Children struggle to formulate questions that can be used for investigations, and so they need to be taught how to do this. However, there is a paucity of research literature providing empirical evidence of how to teach children to ask investigable science questions. The aim of this study was to provide empirical data on the use of the teaching strategies suggested in the research literature, that is, to investigate which strategies science teachers use in teaching children how to ask questions that can be used in science investigations.

Background: Appropriate child feeding prevents nutrient deficiencies, diseases, and deaths in children. However, only 13.3% of children aged 6-23 months in Ghana receive the minimum acceptable diet. Thus, undernutrition remains high in rural northern Ghana, especially among under-fives. This is showing no improvement despite economic development and implementation of globally recommended nutrition & feeding interventions. There is limited context specific evidence about child feeding in rural northern Ghana. Aim: To examine how culture might impact upon the feeding of children under five years of age in rural northern Ghana. Methods: A qualitative ethnographic study was completed between October 2014 and May 2015. Data were collected in a rural Ghanaian community via participant observation and sixty-one ethnographic interviews with mothers, fathers, and grandparents in 15 households, and spiritual leaders are known as "diviners". Themes were developed through inductive analysis of field notes and verbatim transcribed interviews using a framework approach. Results: The content of a child's diet and the pattern of feeding were found to be influenced by the community's notion of food, taboos, and beliefs which originated in a traditional African religion. Shared household responsibility for feeding children and the gendered and age related hierarchy of household decision making also influenced child feeding. Discussion: This study has shown multifaceted taken-for-granted social and cultural influences on child feeding. Whilst mothers are the main recipients of the official public health nutrition and child feeding advice, the communal structures, living arrangements and social interactions support, enhance, and reinforce the community inclined practices that limit mothers' independent decision making. Conclusion: To effect community change and promote uptake of public health nutrition recommendations, a community wide nutrition intervention approach may be more beneficial than the current approach which targets mothers. Furthermore, community and cultural influences must be understood and considered by health professionals if such interventions are to succeed.

Pozzi, Monzo Maria E. "A research study into the process of change in under fives' psychoanalytic psychotherapy". Thesis, University of East London, 2007. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3816/.

Resumo:
The present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children under five and their families. This method originated at the Tavistock Clinic in the nineteen-eighties. The aim of the intervention is to resolve symptoms and deep anxieties in the child, which impede developmental progress, through paying close attention to the emotional dynamic within the family and to trans-generational issues. This research study has taken place in a National Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service in England. The families were offered treatment as usual, which included a preliminary telephone consultation to establish the urgency of the difficulty. During this consultation the criteria for inclusion in the study were established. The hypothesis underlying this research is that there is a link between the parents' state of mind and their child's behaviour and symptoms as indicated in the referral letter. In particular, if parents feel understood and have the experience of being emotionally contained by the therapist in treatment, their state of mind is likely to move along a continuum from being predominantly reactive to being more reflective. In psychoanalytic parlance, they move from a paranoid-schizoid position to one that is more depressive (PS^D). A methodology has been devised which includes both a qualitative and a quantitative approach and videotaping of sessions. The quantitative findings suggest that the parents' state of mind in relation to their child did indeed alter from being predominantly reactive to being more reflective, but this was specific to one of the three dimensions measured. By the end of treatment, parents were found to be less blaming and more reparatory in their general state of mind, having started at baseline, by being rather blaming in their general attitude. However the findings were less conclusive in terms of the parents changing on the other two dimensions i.e. of enmeshment - separateness and criticism - identification with the child. The qualitative findings based on the parents' reports on the children's progress and the therapist's observation and countertransference showed that the children's symptoms and behaviour changed and improved. However, this part of the research was based on a qualitative and not a statistical analysis of the data. The qualitative material supported the hypothesis and the predictions generally as well as the quantitative findings. However, it could have been argued that it was the statistical findings that lent some partial credibility to the qualitative findings.

The "urban struggles" seem now to be an old story belonging to the golden age of the 1970's struggles. However, those mobilizations did not fully disappear and are even experiencing a revival as a result of the last waves of urban renewal. Those struggles, embodied by both neighbors and "users" of the working-class areas, take part in the transformation of the urban spaces where they emerge. This thesis questions the relations of mutual structuring between the process of transformation of the working-class areas and the movements of social protest built against the urban renewal process and the housing policies. At the crossroads between urban sociology and the sociology of social movements, this work offers an analytical reinterpretation of the French school of Marxist urban sociology. In this perspective, this thesis relies on the study of four social mobilizations that have emerged between 1969 and 2016 in a working-class neighborhood located in the eastern part of the city of Lille, Lille-Fives. A first historical inquiry analyses three mobilizations taking flesh in a struggle against the urban renewal that occurred during the 1970's and the 1980's. The second one is contemporary and studies an association born at the beginning of 2010 that is involved in the struggle against urban renewal and very active through housing syndicalism. This last work is quite in line with the research approach of action-research as the author is a member and a current employee of the association

Resumo:
The objectives of this study are to provide a comprehensive assessment of inequalities in infant and under-five years' child survival, access to and utilisations of child health services among different socio-economic groups in Ethiopia; and identify issues for policies and programmes at national and sub-national levels. This thesis examines the effect of parental socioeconomic status, maternal and delivery care services, mothers' bio-demographic and background characteristics on the level of differences in infant and under-five years' child survival and access to and utilisation of child health services. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were carried out for selected variables in the literature which were consider as the major determinants of infant mortality rate (IMR) and under-five years' child mortality rate (U5MR); access to and utilisations of child health services based on data from Ethiopian demographic and health survey (EDHS), covering the years 2000-2005. In the multivariate analysis a logit regression model was used to estimates inequalities in infant and under-five years' child survival, and inequalities in access to and utilisation of child health services. In Ethiopia, little was known about inequalities in IMR and U5MR, and inequalities in access to and utilisation of child health services. Besides, there is no systematic analysis of health inequalities and into its determinants using logistic regression. According to the available literature, this is the first comprehensive and systematic analysis of inequality of health in Ethiopia. The findings show that compared to under-five years' children of mothers' partners with no work, mothers' partners in professional, technical and managerial occupations had 13 times more chance of under-five years child survival for 2000 weighted observations. In addition, compared to infants of mothers who were gave birth to one child in last 5 years preceding the survey, infants of mothers who were gave birth to 2 children in last 5 years preceding the survey had 70% less chance of infant survival while infants of mothers who were gave birth to 3 or more children had 89% less chance of infant survival for 2000 weighted observations. Moreover, this study finding also indicates that inequalities increased significantly in the five years period between 2000 and 2005 among mothers with different birth interval. Most of the relations between birth interval and receiving childhood immunisation for vaccine-preventable diseases were statistically significant. Moreover compared to non-educated mothers, mothers who completed secondary and higher education were nearly 10 times more likely to receive DPT3 immunisation for their young children. This study concludes that policy measures that tackle health inequalities will have a positive impact in the implementation of health sector strategy of Ethiopia. Health inequalities studies in Ethiopia and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries should focus on systematic analysis of different socio-economic groups. The finding of this study support investing in the Ethiopia's health extension package (HEP) is a necessary but not sufficient condition for addressing rural poor health problem. HEP is successful in increasing primary health care coverage in rural Ethiopia to 89.6% (FMOH, 2009) but unable to reduce Ethiopia's higher level of IMR and U5MR. HEP is one of the success stories that address the rural poor health problem and can also be adapted to developing countries of SSA. The finding also shows that the success stories such as health insurance programs like Rwanda (World Bank, 2008a) and Ethiopia (FMOH, 2009/10) will play a key role in achieving country's health care financing goal of universal coverage. This can also be replicated in the developing SSA countries.

This paper explores the statistical properties of microfragment recovery techniques used on NTFS filesystems in the use of digital forensics. A microfragment is the remnant file-data existing in the cluster slack after this file has been overwritten. The total amount of cluster slack is related to the size distribution of the overwriting files as well as to the size of cluster. Experiments have been performed by varying the size distributions of the overwriting files as well as the cluster sizes of the partition. These results are then compared with existing analytical models.

Resumo:
The Enigma of Appearances is an examination into the medium of three-dimensional photography, with particular focus on the technique of stereoscopy. Invented in the mid-Victorian era, stereoscopy was an attempt to simulate natural three-dimensional perception via a combination of optics, neurology, and a pair of dissimilar images. Whilst successful in producing a powerful illusion of spatial depth and tangibility, the illusion produced by stereoscopy is anything but ??natural??, when compared to three-dimensional perception observed with the naked eye. Rather, stereoscopic photography creates a strange and unnatural interpretation of three-dimensional reality, devoid of atmosphere, movement and sound, where figures appear frozen in mid-motion, like waxwork models, or embalmed creatures in a museum. However, it is precisely stereoscopic photography??s unique and enigmatic interpretation of three-dimensional reality, which gives it its strength, separating it from being a mere ??realistic?? recording of the natural world. This thesis examines the unique cultural position that stereoscopy has occupied since its invention in 1838, from its early role as a tool for the study of binocular vision, to its phenomenal popularity as a form of mass entertainment in the second half of the 19th century, to its emergence in contemporary fine art practice in the late 20th and 21stt centuries. Additionally, The Enigma of Appearances gives a detailed analysis of the theory of spatial depth perception; it discusses the dichotomy between naturalia versus artificialia in relation to stereoscopic vision; and finally, traces the development of experimental studio practice and research into stereoscopic photography, undertaken for this MFA between 2005 and 2007. The resulting work, Camera Mortuaria (Italian for ??Mortuary Room??), is a powerful and innovative series of anaglyptic portraits, based upon an experimental stereoscopic technique that enables the production of extreme close-up three-dimensional photography. Applying this technique to the reproduction of the human face in three-dimensional form, Camera Mortuaria presents a series of ??photo sculptures??, which hover between reality and illusion, pushing the boundaries of stills photography to the limit, and beyond.

In the 24-hour non-stop Taipei city, the nine-to-five office routine has little by little transited into another kind of “late nine-to-early five” lifestyle. Modern people seek after high-speed, effectiveness, order, much faster pace and try hard to play their own roles in the city; but they’ve all ignored who they are, what they need, and what their desire lies in. Not only were their demands disregarded, somewhere around the corner in the city was forgotten as well… In my design, it presents modern people’s conversion and development in their physical and mental status under a one-day time frame (from day to night). Take the Taipei Ren-Ai Circle for instance, it is a city green belt left behind with only huge flow of cars and its formal meaning remaining. The design re-interprets the relations between the metropolitan space and human beings and it pours also the new activities, new life and new meaning into this forgotten circle: to provide a metropolitan space in the city which is in accordance with modern people’s physical and mental status – a city park + pubs.

This program probes into the method of simultaneously examining five preservatives:p-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, and Dehydrate Acetic Acid, and two artificial sweeteners: Saccharin and Dulcin by HPLC. The solid samples were shacked and extracted by water, and then filtered. The liquid samples were diluted with water and then filtered. After these procedures, they were injected into HPLC. The consistencies of p-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Dehydrate Acetic Acid, Saccharin and Dulcin will be presented in twenty minutes by using a Intersil-ODS2-6mmx15mm 5um column, and the buffer solution of Methanol : Acetonitrile : 5mM citric Acid buffer (15:15:70) as mobile phase; under the condition of 1ml/min flow velocity, and 225nm wavelength for detection. The linear correlation factor reached r2=0.9994~0.9998. LOD is 1~2ng, under the condition of signal to noise ratio (S/N)=3. When S/N=10,LOQ is 1~2 mg/kg. The average recovery of adding appropriate standard solution into solid and liquid samples reaches 97.57%. In total sixteen products tested by this method, there were eleven solid samples containing preservatives or artificial sweeteners, which were over the limit, and three liquid samples containing preservatives, but the additive quantities were within the allowable range, and the others contained no preservatives or artificial sweeteners.

In the recent years, the academic upsurge phenomenon of “Knowledge Management” is over 10 times of past decade. The outlook of the academic to knowledge management has been turned from the simple storage of knowledge by pass to the creating and innovating of knowledge by now. The creating and innovating of knowledge is generated of the knowledge transfer and interaction, therefore, the behavior of knowledge sharing is an important of “Knowledge Management.” The researches on the aspiration for knowledge management in Taiwan aren’t as much value as the Western countries and just been researched seldom. What is more, some researches put all the organizations culture, distinguishing characteristics of moral integrity, and other elements in the research variable. Afterwards adopted the theory of distinguishing characteristics of moral integrity by smaller interface that made the influence on the distinguishing characteristic of moral integrity lower or unapparent. Consequently, this research is based on the distinguishing characteristic of moral integrity interface to research the relationship between the moral integrity and knowledge sharing. This research subdivided the specialty of moral integrity by five principle of moral integrity specialty, that figured out does the moral integrity effect the volition of knowledge sharing or not. This research is aimed at the knowledge workers of the case study company. To proceed the questionnaires and profundity interviews and research the correlation from the peculiarity of moral integrity to inclination of knowledge sharing. Results of this research: 1. Them were mid-high related to the demonstrative, communicative, and extraversion interfaces of knowledge sharing in five principle of moral integrity specialty. 2. The different distinguishing characteristic people of moral integrity have different reactions of knowledge sharing at “the reactions of knowledge sharing behavior.” 3. The different distinguishing characteristic people of moral integrity have different reactions of knowledge sharing at “the knowledge types of sharing,” too. 4. The different distinguishing characteristic people’s motives have variations at “the motives of knowledge sharing.: 5. In the “Career competition advantage,” only the nervous characteristic people believe the knowledge sharing behavior will influence the career competition advantage. 6. In the “Preserving the knowledge or not,” the nervous characteristic people believe the accumulation of the knowledge is a hard achievement by one’s self who will not share all the knowledge. 7. Due to the training and operational factors for an insurance broker, industry systems and the provisions for the professional information of an Insurance Salesman are very different from other occupations of industries, also the training is quite different. From the personal studiey, we tenow that of personality would certain effect the results of knowledge-sharing. The purposes of this study as follows: 1. Investigating the relation of personality to knowledge-sharing willingness. 2. Investigating the personality of higher-willingness to knowledge-sharing. This research uses questionnaire survey as a procedure. The subjects of the study are from Nan Shan Insurance Company. The questionnaire includes three main parts, personality, knowledge-sharing and personal information. The grand total provides 500 copies, recycling effective 307 questionnaires, deducting 281 invalid questionnaires, the effective questionnaire recycling a rate 56.2%. After analyzing by SPSS12, we found the sample of the personality centralizes at affinity and extrovert, and the samples of the extrovert are more than affinity. This situation may be relevant to choosing staff in the insurance, educational training and culture organization. In the other hand, the salesmen need to face a lot of frustrations, and therefore it forms a natural selection in this environment, it will eliminate other personality from general business, the interaction with colleagues and boss is also a competition. So under this culture organization, the member in the organization will encourage and push each other through the company competition and the target of the organization. They create an environment to affect those staff, and stimulate them to develop a personality which is suitable to the environment, it is consistent with a contention which is the environment will influence a person. Akaligaung, John Akalpa. "Improving the quality of maternal and child health service delivery in resource-poor settings: case study of project fives alive! in Ghana". Thesis, 2015. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/16299.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
BACKGROUND: Quality improvement (QI) efforts in which providers from various health facilities, with support from coaches, work together to implement innovations for improving health care are rapidly spreading from high-income settings to resource-poor settings. However, limited research exists regarding the factors which drive teams to succeed or fail, spread, and sustain best practices. The purpose of this study was to understand the factors facilitating or inhibiting the performance of QI teams of maternal and child health (MCH) service delivery in resource-poor settings. METHODS: A qualitative multi-site case study was conducted in northern Ghana to determine the views and beliefs of QI teams, coaches, and beneficiaries of Project Fives Alive (PFA) about the application of QI to MCH service delivery. Using key informant interviews, document review, and group interviews, the study elicited information about: 1) the factors that affect QI team success and failure when implementing QI methods designed to improve MCH service delivery; 2) the interplay of factors that facilitate or inhibit the spread of best practices among QI teams in northern Ghana; and 3) steps being taken by stakeholders to sustain these best practices. Grounded theory processes were used to identify themes from the data. RESULTS: Testing of changes using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and adoption of a client-centered model to the delivery of services has helped teams to identify the felt needs of clients, resulting in perceived increased uptake of MCH services. Key contributory factors to successes were: availability and accessibility of midwives, training of QI teams, incentive packages for providers and clients, community support groups, and PFA partners. Key challenges inhibiting success were: staff turnover, inadequate supervision, cultural practices, and inadequate infrastructure. Some of the key factors that shaped successes have dissipated, threatening sustainability of QI efforts two years after PFA ended. CONCLUSION: The presence of a midwife, providing leadership for organizing team members and implementing PDSA cycles, can facilitate success. Project staff support is important, but teams and coaches need space and time to drive the QI process independently and practice QI methods in ways that foster continuity beyond donor support.

Parent-infant psychotherapy is a small but growing field in South Africa. Its potential to contribute to mental health services in South Africa is, by contrast, vast. This thesis contributes towards much-needed research on the state of the field in the country and its potential applications across different sectors. Drawing on Daniel Stern’s concept of ports of entry, it is argued that an expansion of ports of entry offers an important integrating tool through which different aspects of parent-infant psychotherapy can be examined and adapted to the South African context. A history of parent-infant psychotherapy in South Africa is offered, together with an analysis of the experiences of current practitioners in the field. These aspects of the thesis draw on interviews with key stakeholders. The dominant context of private practice is then explored through two case study based papers. The first explores the meaning of symptoms in parent-infant psychotherapy. The second introduces the ‘grandmaternal transference’ as an important but under developed port of entry. These different aspects of parent-infant psychotherapy in South Africa are then considered through the prism of ports of entry in order to argue for a flexing of the psychoanalytic frame. Implications for the growth of the parent-infant psychotherapy field in South Africa are considered.
