Khan, Mohsin, Rup Singh, Arvind Patel e Devendra Kumar Jain. "An examination of house price bubble in the real estate sector: the case of a small island economy – Fiji". Purpose This paper aims to assess the equilibrium house price in the city of Suva (Fiji) and to analyse the house price bubble in the Fiji housing market. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a time series approach to determine the presence of house price bubbles in Fiji over the period from 1988 to 2018. Findings The findings suggest that real income, land cost, building material price, inflation rate, volatility, household size and wealth have a positive impact on house prices, whereas user cost of capital and political disturbances have a negative impact. The findings further indicate that the Fijis’ housing market does not constitute any house price bubble. Practical implications This paper draws policy implications for a small developing state (Fiji) and other similar economies. Originality/value The price bubble in the Fiji housing market is analysed for the first time. This paper develops a comprehensive empirical approach to assess the equilibrium-housing price in Fiji.

Taro production in Fiji is fluctuating in a yearly basis due to presence of devastating pests and diseases. Lack of knowledge in controlling these pests and diseases and the availability of controlling resources is another problem, which farmers in Fiji are currently facing. Taveuni being the largest supplier of taro in Fiji, is experiencing problems related to mono-cropping which in cooperates problems like soil degradation, unwanted weeds and minor pests and diseases. This research article mainly focuses on pests and diseases associated with taro production in Fiji and possible control measures to help farmers in Fiji to enhance their knowledge in controlling these pests and diseases. A thorough survey of taro farmers and exporting companies in Fiji was done to evaluate the problems that have directly or indirectly affected taro production in Fiji in previous years. As shown in figure 2, Fiji has experienced the shortages of taro in the year 2010, 2012 and 2014 as a result of increasing pest and diseases. This shortage not only has affected the demand from overseas market but also farmers in terms of earning for their livelihood. If these problems are not solved at an earliest, the taro industry in Fiji may collapse resulting in greater number of problems in future.

Review of Fiji Waves, produced/directed by Natalie Gouin. Canadian television documentary, 57min, 2001. Montreal, Quebec. Fiji Waves starts with a moving glimpse of Fiji. But it isn't meant for Fijians. In fact, the almost hour long documentary shot in Fiji in late 1999 is meant to enlighten those that live in the "first world"— Canadian viewers. The major and most interesting part of the documentary deals with how globalisation, modernisation, new imperialism is affecting the minds, lifestyle and culture of people who live in Fiji with the introduction of television.

Like any other Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Fiji has limited entrepreneurial opportunities. However, these countries have some unique high value niche products that have attracted global attention. Among the limited niche products in Fiji, kava (Piper methysticum) known as ‘yaqona’ or ‘grog’, is a popular agricultural and industrial product. Kava is not only a traditional, ceremonial and social drink in Fiji, but also a product that contributes to social and economic development through export and foreign exchange earnings and provides employment, and livelihoods, and alleviates poverty. As a beverage and pharmaceutical product, Fiji kava is increasing its importance nationally and internationally. The paper analyzes kava in Fiji as an entrepreneurial and business product, its trends in production, trade, ‘niche market’, growth potential, its role, and also explores the issues and challenges associated with kava in Fiji.

The use of soft power in diplomacy is essential because it minimizes the use of violence and coercion to solving a problem. This strength became the primary tool in the diplomacy of Indonesia-Fiji bilateral relations. The implementation of Indonesia's soft power is Indonesia's engagement in South-South Cooperation through technical cooperation for Fiji. This training is considered essential for Indonesia’s national interest, such as to support the territorial integrity and Indonesia's position in the South Pacific. The problem in this research is how the development of bilateral relations between Indonesia-Fiji through South-South Cooperation in 1999-2016? What is the impact of South-South Cooperation that Indonesia has made with Fiji? The research method used is qualitative with collecting data and uses the concept of Soft Power, Bilateral Relations, and International Cooperation Theory. Indonesia's bilateral relations with Fiji over the period of 1999-2016 have increased. The increase can be seen from the position of the total ranking of Fiji trade with Indonesia, which always occupies the top three in the South Pacific region. The Indonesian Government's strategy to improve bilateral relations with Fiji is to use a soft power approach in the form of technical cooperation within the South-South Cooperation Framework. This strategy has a positive impact on the political and economic fields of Indonesia. In politics, Indonesia has gained political support from Fiji about Indonesia’s territorial integrity from the separatist movement. In the area of economy, Indonesia has succeeded in opening up a new market in the agriculture sector that is selling hand tractors to Fiji and Vanuatu.

This article discusses the evolving role of mental health counseling in Fiji in the context of current social and cultural changes. Although counseling traditionally has been reserved for cultural elders and the clergy, the term counselor is being redefined, due to Western influences, to include persons who are formally educated and trained to provide mental health services. Contemporary issues such as changing gender roles, violence, and suicide are discussed as forces that are influencing the need for trained mental health counselors. This article discusses the current status of educating and credentialing counselors in Fiji and emphasizes counselor education that stresses methods suited to the cultural characteristics of persons in the region.
