Texto completo da fonteA true reflection of a society in transition, in which tradition and innovation went side by side in an almost osmotic way, english horse-racing proved to be both a form of mass entertainment and an upper-class leisure activity in the second half of the 18th century, being at the same time official and unofficial, amateur and professional, conservative and innovative, scientific and primitive. This constant and balanced osmosis not only altered the nature and the organization of the sport, but also gave rise to a new definition of its socioeconomic function. While spearheading the horse-breeding policy and establishing itself as one of the most popular sports under the patronage of the nobility, english horse-racing was also responsible for some social mobility, through the laying of bets and the breeding, training and selling of thoroughbreds. Thanks to its elitist principles and revolutionary inventions, the jockey club, founded in 1751, was able to impose itself as the undisputed guardian of the interaction between tradition and innovation

The history of the activities and of women's admission may influence their current place in the activities examined. Moreover, the fact that social and athletic characteristics are slightly different from one group of individuals to another, puts forward the concept of ethnomotricity. Likewise, the way players grasp the activities, in the social representations they can have built or integrated, influences women's choice, for some activities. The media also play an obvious role in the recognition of activities and female sport through the articles published. Finally, the sports' internal logic constitutes the main factor allowing the various external logic axis to influence the racket practices' current situation, in particular through the players' choice to put time in an activity

Texto completo da fonteIn 2014, law n°2014-873 “for true equality between women and men” introduced two types of gender quotas on the executive board of national sports federations. These quotas are more constraining than the previous ones and set a minimum of 25% of men and women in the composition of federal governing bodies. This thesis aims to investigate the construction of the mesure and the way how it is implemented in sports federations. It explores, in particular, the claim that there is a dearth of women sports leaders and analyses the electoral competition of governing bodies of French NSFs after the enactment of these quotas (2016-2017). For doing so, it uses the tools of strategic analysis and a renewed perspective which takes into account the contributions of the sociology of gender (Crozier & Friedberg, 1977; Laufer, 2010). The research employs mixed methods. It consists in a quantitative study conducted on 107 NSFs and a qualitative investigation conducted on five federations (basketball, rugby XIII, cycling, UFOLEP and dance). Overall, electoral competition for most executive boards is very limited and most of the candidates were elected. Quantitative figures suggest that there is no voting bias against women and that the lack of female candidates is rare, but the interviews confirmed the a priori role of networks. Some federations elaborate strategies of resistance and/or circumvention of the law. They limit the application of the measure through ex-officio members or the creation of additional boards, and consider quotas as a maximum. Despite these features and sports federations’ resistance, women’s representation in sport governance is increasing significantly - more than in the last twenty years. However, few of them manage to influence the decision-making process of sports federations yet

Women leaders’ careers in sport organizations testify that such progression is possible, even if their presence is a “transgression”. It seems that trajectories of women leaders make one wonder about gender, and on a larger scale about social relationships between people. It also analyze the influence of family socialization, life in family sphere, institutional logics and people’s acts in the social change dynamics or its reproduction

Texto completo da fonteAmong the studies that have been conducted in the field of sport, few are interested in women participation. Indeed, several questions arise when we think of sports invested by women. Which are the features of sports that have enabled women practice? What values conveyed through sport are compatible with Christian and social images of femininity? What are distinctive characteristics of sport equipment made for women and how has it evolved? The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the way in which women started playing sports that were originally reserved for men, from 1880 to 1974 in the province of Quebec and how women athletes had an impact on the material culture related to their sport, including the adaptation of equipment to the body and to female performance. The main sources are the formal analysis of sport equipment from the collection of the Civilization Museum in Quebec City, and the use of both commercial catalogues and oral testimonies.

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis develops a sociological approach of sports journalism in the Swiss-French daily press. The production of news is analyzed, and its effect on the content of the news is examined through interviews, ethnographic observations and an analysis of a corpus of sports articles. It reveals that the professional styles of sports journalists depend on several mechanisms imbricated at a structural level (ways of recruitment of journalists, division of labour, organizational constraints in the newsrooms, etc. ), and an interactional level (in the newsroom and in the field) at which the journalists tastes and biographical experiences also interfere. Nevertheless, sports sections are gendered organisations, not only leading most male and female journalists to have different careers, but also to the production of different texts and follow different journalistic practices. This explains why the recent feminization of sports journalism in Swiss-French daily press, a male dominated domain, seems to have encouraged the development of a new journalistic style

Texto completo da fonteWorking as an economy of corporeal differences, sport divides according to age, gender, weight, handicap and level. However, many “mixed” sports gather, on the same field, players who are used to compete separately. Stemming from the mixed male-female context in sports, this dissertation addresses the reformulation of differences ‒ either socially innate or elaborated ‒ when mixed sports practices occur. The purpose of this study aims at showing how sex remains (or not) a determining factor regarding how people interact with one another in a delimited space where the body is the operator through which the relationship with the other is built. Five mixed sporting disciplines reuniting these conditions were selected and examined for this research: Flag, Korfbal, Tchoukball, Touch and Ultimate. These five team sports, ipso facto, confront the players’ bodies with one another.Through the analysis of role distributions, play time, collective strategies and interactions, this dissertation questions sex ‒ being man or woman ‒ and its firm hold on the body, that is to say the set of characteristics which anyone mobilizes in sports practice. If this research shows a latent and enduring gender-related order as well as corporeal rites of interaction between the sexes that are participating to the reinforcement of the male-female distinction and divide, it also shows a rarely observed and scarcely documented phenomenon: as the level and the sporting stakes increase, the male-female distinction dissipates, if not disappears. The body finds itself emancipated from its sexualized as well as gendered symbolism to become a mere tool at the service of the game

Texto completo da fonteFor the past few years, successive governments and national sports associations have developed a proactive policy as regards equality and parity in sports. What is the real impact of these schemes, actions and recommendations? Jointly carried out in the Pyrénées-Orientales (French region of Languedoc-Roussillon) and within the Autonomous Community of Gerone (Calalonia), our study concentrates on volunteer women’s access to positions of responsibility in local sports clubs. Using the results of a field study made in the Catalan cross-border area, this thesis provides a comprehensive assessment of the position and experience of women leaders in judo clubs. We consider that this comparison is relevant both on scientific and political levels since it allows to understand cultural continuities of gender relations in sports. Moreover, we will also consider the differences linked to the national background and to the consequences of public policies. From monographs of clubs chosen on both sides of the border, we will try and describe the positions and career paths of women managers, but also how their volunteer investment was sometimes held back. In this respect, not only we will compare how these women have reached their leading positions (career, family life, sport capital, clubs operation…) but also we will understand how they themselves consider their duties. Given a fierce competition strongly associated with the values of virility, how do women succeed in breaking the glass ceiling? Is it possible to distinguish between enabling factors or identical brakes, according to the country?Eventually, this thesis provides a combined analysis of gender social relations in sports clubs and a comparison to better understand the respective consequences of political and institutional contexts on the purpose of this study

Texto completo da fonteIf fitness centres have already given up many of their secrets, it is not the same for those who impose discrimination regarding gender. Yet, since 2004, they keep expanding on French territory, putting forward the fact that access is denied to men – a quite peculiar positioning in times of promotion of sexes coexistence in social spaces – ; selling their services offer allegedly specifically designed for their clientele, that is to say women, all women whatever their age, their morphology, their physical shape, their relation to their own body or with sport ; presenting themselves as places free from any stares, evaluative judgements, stigmatising situations. Basing us on an investigation combining (non) participating observations (350 hours), semi-structured interviews with the managers and coaches (43) of these establishments as well as the clients (27), and an analysis of their communication media (3235), we eventually managed to produce some new sociological knowledge. Willingly inclusive in spaces designed to be exclusive on sexes criteria, here is the paradox of these fitness centres of a new kind. However, this outward inclusion must not hide the practices that have been set in these institutions, aiming at evaluating their clients bodies in regards of the dominant norms, in order to make them lose weight, to reduce their fat, to tone up their muscles so that these bodies get closer and closer of the beauty standards that make femininity

Texto completo da fonteThe administration of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to its potential ergogenic effect. This effect would be mediated by the transformation of DHEA in testosterone, known for its anabolic effect. Yet, the effect on sports performance has received little attention in healthy young men and has never been studied in healthy young women. The main goal of our work was therefore to evaluate the effects of short-term DHEA administration on sports performance for these populations. In a randomized, double blind, crossover study, 10 young men and 11 young women, recreational athletes, have taken 100 mg/day of DHEA and a placebo over two 28-day periods separated by a washout period of 28 days. At the beginning and at the end of each treatment period, anaerobic and aerobic performances were evaluated, respectively with the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST) and the 20-m shuttle run test. We have also measured body composition, physiologic and psychologic responses as well as dietary intake. Neither the performances both for RAST and 20-m shuttle run test, nor the body composition have been significantly altered by the DHEA intake in both men and women. In saliva, DHEA has induced a significant increase in testosterone for women (x 20). This increased has been more moderate for men (x 2.3). Among the dietary intake criteria, only the lipid intake has increased and only for men. No change in the adipokine levels and the psychological parameters has been noted for both genders. For women, it would be interesting to complete this work with the administration of multiple doses throughout the day

Texto completo da fonteThis research in the field of sociology of gender aims at understanding the rarity of female referees in the Malagasy Federation of Volleyball (MFVB). The issue concerns the link between the professional practice of arbitration and the norms of sexual identities in the Malagasy society. Due to the lack of existing work on gender and sport in Madagascar, our approach proceeds from an exploratory investigation. The institutional and statistical approach reveals the existence of a double glass ceiling, blocking women's arbitration training, and then, their career promotion. Interviews were conducted, in a qualitative approach, with female referees (8), leaders or managers (17 with 14 men), and a questionnaire was filled in by female volleyball players from Antananarivo (222). All answers point towards the facts but the interpretations vary: the female referees denounce discriminatory processes and the male domination they are facing, leaders legitimize their management practice, relying on the patriarchal norms and values of the Malagasy society, while other male managers do not abide by these positions and other federations promote female arbitration on an international scale. The female volleyball players' responses prove that they are available for the sport and generally express an egalitarian conception of arbitration, a quarter of the women even said they would like to become referee. Although the end of discrimination in the arbitral management of the MFVB seems to depend on internal power relations, the survey shows the emergence of gender mobility in the Malagasy sport community, women referees have actually conquered new public and democratic prerogatives

Texto completo da fonteThis doctoral research focuses on the sexual typology of sports in the Iranian context. Then, according to social identity theory and self-categorization theory framework, it is interested in identity effects that appear in and face to this sexual labelling. For this, three studies were carried out in Iran. The first study (n = 810), linked to Iranian context, determines the gender typology of several sports. This study highlights the fact that sexual labelling of sports is a reflection of the societal context, including sport practicing for women. The second study (n = 522) examines the link between practice and sexual typology of sports. This study points out the fact that, in a social scene that advantages men, sexual appropriation of sports becomes a way for sportive women to improve their status in relation to sportive men. Indeed, in search of a favourable social identity, they use social competition by changing the gender typology of masculine sports. This mechanism also exists between women according to the sexual type of sport they practice. The third study (n = 80), including qualitative and quantitative approaches, focuses on the expected characteristics of an ideal coach for high performance athletes in opposition sports. The specificities, identified through qualitative approach, were put in parallel with the dimensions of several theories focus on the coach/the coaching, as well as with an example in the world of opposition sports. The deeper quantitative reflection of these characteristics reveals the fact that sexual type of sport as well as sex of the athlete play a role on the preference of the desired characteristics for an ideal coach. Indeed, sportive women use social creativity based on the ideal image of their coach in order to maintain a positive image of themselves. In conclusion, this work shows that Iranian sportswomen use two collective strategies of identity management to deal with their threatened social identity. They generally use social competition and social creativity in the case of high-level amateur sport

Texto completo da fonteThe framework for the practise of judo is a particular one; it stages elements that make the study of gender division in judo sport clubs particularly interesting. Indeed, the socialisation of the body and the integration of non-official codes of the sport aim at de-Gendering the bodies and the judokas, thus promoting the emergence of neutralized gender relations between judokas. From a situational analysis of the gender division, it was then possible to highlight the fact that gendered statuses are set in the background, in favour of those directly related to the practise of the sport or to the individuals themselves. In this respect, judokas take on a plurality of statuses, which are interlinked and combined with each other. Taking them into account depends on the ongoing relation: from this point of view, the relations between judokas in judo sport clubs revolve around a stratification of their statuses and of the roles associated with them
