AbstractThe analysis of seismic wave propagation and amplification in complex geological structures requires efficient numerical methods. In this article, following up on recent studies devoted to the formulation, implementation and evaluation of 3-D single- and multi-region elastodynamic fast multipole boundary element methods (FM-BEMs), a simple preconditioning strategy is proposed. Its efficiency is demonstrated on both the single- and multi-region versions using benchmark examples (scattering of plane waves by canyons and basins). Finally, the preconditioned FM-BEM is applied to the scattering of plane seismic waves in an actual configuration (alpine basin of Grenoble, France), for which the high velocity contrast is seen to significantly affect the overall efficiency of the multi-region FM-BEM.

During the optimization phase of a wave energy converter (WEC), it is essential to be able to rely on a model that is both fast and accurate. In this regard, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) with Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach is not suitable for optimization studies, given its computational cost, while methods based on potential theory are fast but not accurate enough. A good compromise can be found in boundary element methods (BEMs), based on potential theory, with the addition of non-linearities. This paper deals with the identification of viscous parameters to account for such non-linearities, based on CFD-Unsteady RANS (URANS) analysis. The work proposes two different methodologies to identify the viscous damping along the rotational degree of freedom (DOF) of pitch and roll: The first solely involves the outcomes of the CFD simulations, computing the viscous damping coefficients through the logarithmic decrement method, the second approach solves the Cummins’ equation of motion, via a Runge-Kutta scheme, selecting the damping coefficients that minimize the difference with CFD time series. The viscous damping is mostly linear for pitch and quadratic for roll, given the shape of the WEC analysed.

The fast multipole method (FMM) is an effective approach for accelerating the computation efficiency of the boundary element method (BEM) in solving problems that are computationally intensive. This paper presents two different BEMs, i.e., Kress' and Seydou's methods, for solving two-dimensional (2D) acoustic transmission problems with a multilayered obstacle, along with application of the FMM to solution of the related boundary integral equations. Conventional BEM requires O(MN2) operations to compute the equations for this problem. By using the FMM, both the amount of computation and the memory requirement of the BEM are reduced to order O(MN), where M is the number of layers of the obstacle. The efficiency and accuracy of this approach in dealing with the acoustic transmission problems containing a multilayered obstacle are demonstrated in the numerical examples. It is confirmed that this approach can be applied to solving the acoustic transmission problems for an obstacle with multilayers.

AbstractSmall conical targets have been used in high intensity laser target interaction mostly in the context of fast ignition. We demonstrate that when cone targets are shaped appropriately and used with specific interaction conditions, they can produce particle beams of higher maximum energy and number in a lower angular divergence than flat targets. This is relevant to fast ignition, small compact particle beams, medical applications, focused ion and/or electron beam microscopes. This fact carries the potential to produce particle beams that are no longer limited by the characteristics of the laser. Note that for fast ignition, reducing the divergence of the beam lowers the energy requirement and enhances the energy deposition into the compressed fuel.

AbstractThe great progress in high-peak-power laser technology has resulted recently in the production of ps and subps laser pulses of PW powers and relativistic intensities (up to 1021 W/cm2) and has laid the basis for the construction of multi-PW lasers generating ultrarelativistic laser intensities (above 1023 W/cm2). The laser pulses of such extreme parameters make it possible to produce highly collimated beams of electrons or ions of MeV to GeV energies, of short time durations (down to subps) and of enormous currents and current densities, unattainable with conventional accelerators. Such particle beams have a potential to be applied in numerous fields of scientific research as well as in medicine and technology development. This paper is focused on laser-driven generation of fast ion beams and reviews recent progress in this field. The basic concepts and achievements in the generation of intense beams of protons, light ions, and multiply charged heavy ions are presented. Prospects for applications of laser-driven ion beams are briefly discussed.

Abstract. We present detailed observations of electromagnetic waves and particle distributions from the Fast Auroral SnapshoT (FAST) satellite which reveal many important properties of large-amplitude, spatially-coherent plasma structures known as "fast solitary structures" or "electron phase space holes". Similar structures have been observed in several regions of the magnetosphere including the auroral zone, plasma sheet boundary layer, and bow shock. There has been rapid theoretical progress in understanding these structures. Solitary structures can develop from bidirectional electron beams. Once developed, the one-dimensional properties parallel to the magnetic field can be adequately described by analytical treatment as BGK structures. There remains, however, several unanswered questions. The origin of the bidirectional electron beams, the development of two-or three-dimensional structures, and the observed association with the ion cyclotron frequency are not well understood.

Earthquakes due to either natural or anthropogenic sources cause important human and material damage. In both cases, the presence of pore fluids influences the triggering of seismic instabilities.A new and timely question in the community is to show that the earthquake instability could be mitigated by active control of the fluid pressure. In this work, we study the ability of Fast Boundary Element Methods (Fast BEMs) to provide a multi-physic large-scale robust solver required for modeling earthquake processes, human induced seismicity and their mitigation. In a first part, a Fast BEM solver with different temporal integration algorithms is used. We assess the performances of various possible adaptive time-step methods on the basis of 2D seismic cycle benchmarks available for planar faults. We design an analytical aseismic solution to perform convergence studies and provide a rigorous comparison of the capacities of the different solving methods in addition to the seismic cycles benchmarks tested. We show that a hybrid prediction-correction / adaptive time-step Runge-Kutta method allows not only for an accurate solving but also to incorporate both inertial effects and hydro-mechanical couplings in dynamic fault rupture simulations. In a second part, once the numerical tools are developed for standard fault configurations, our objective is to take into account fluid injection effects on the seismic slip. We choose the poroelastodynamic framework to incorporate injection effects on the earthquake instability. A complete poroelastodynamic model would require non-negligible computational costs or approximations. We justify rigorously which predominant fluid effects are at stake during an earthquake or a seismic cycle. To this aim, we perform a dimensional analysis of the equations, and illustrate the results using a simplified 1D poroelastodynamic problem. We formally show that at the timescale of the earthquake instability, inertial effects are predominant whereas a combination of diffusion and elastic deformation due to pore pressure change should be privileged at the timescale of the seismic cycle, instead of the diffusion model mainly used in the literature

The effects of ion orbits on pitch angle scattering of fast ion beam injection are investigated here for the magnetic equilibrium of the ITER tokamak. Two methods are used to calculate distributions in the presence of orbits, one applying boundary conditions a posteriori and one a priori. In both cases an orbit average of the Fokker-Planck equation is taken, yielding a solution in velocity space variables velocity and pitch angle. In the first case, conditions in the form of a linear combination of co, counter, and trapped distributions or fluxes are matched at the orbit transition value of pitch angle so that several distributions combine to form a solution. In the second case, an overall distribution is found which obeys boundary conditions derived from the trapped and passing regime essential behavior. Ultimately, both methods yield distributions which are essentially equivalent in character.

Några, i vissa sammanhang betydande, skillnader existerar dock.

Among the fundamental elements of reinforced concrete structures, slabs have been the object of continuous improvement regarding of comfort, safety and economy. The development of economical construction techniques has permitted the forecoming of precast slabs, with advantages over massive slabs, such as: reducing the consumption of formwork, concrete, and consequently a reduction of the stress on the structural elements and foundations. All these, obviously, result in quicker execution and greater economy in construction costs. This study has attempted to gather the necessary information to provide a global view of this subject; approaching historical aspects of precast slabs, a description of its elements and construction process, dimensioning, laboratory experiments upon truss-framed reinforced beams, and finally, an analysis of security in the construction phase. It was concluded that the quality and structural performance of these slabs depend greatly on the care taken during the construction phase, particulary in respect to bracing. Thus, accidents caused by errors comitted at this stage are avoided.

This dissertation aimed to evaluate the influence of environmental conditions on behavioral and physiological indicators of animal welfare in swine. In a period of 60 days, 7 females were subjected to 4 environmental situations: period of habituation in thermoneutrality (TN1), Cold (F), thermoneutrality (TN2) and Heat (C) with a duration of 15 days each. Through precision livestock tools and laboratory analyzes, behavioral indicators such as the proximity index (IP) and the number of visits to the feeder; and physiological variables such as surface temperature (ts) and rectal (tr), blood levels of the hormone T3, cortisol and alpha-amylase and salivary from the last two were studied. There were significant differences, both in behavioral and physiological indicators according to environmental variations, with emphasis on the decrease in the proximity index in situation C (p <0,001) and the increase in hormone T3 in the situation F (p <0,05). The results obtained highlight the potential of the use of precision livestock tools for the assessment of swine welfare and the importance of the thermal environment in the behavioral and physiological indicators of welfare in swine, recommending, for the latter, more in-depth studies, mainly in relation to hormonal indicators.

AbstractTo explore ultra-fast dynamics in quantum systems one needs detection schemes which allow time measurements in the attosecond regime. During the recent decades, the pump & probe two-pulse laser technique has provided milestone results on ultra-fast dynamics with femto- and attosecond time resolution. Today this technique is applied in many laboratories around the globe, since complete pump & probe systems are commercially available. It is, however, less known or even forgotten that ultra-fast dynamics has been investigated several decades earlier even with zeptosecond resolution in ion-atom collision processes. A few of such historic experiments, are presented here, where the particle motion (due to its very fast velocity) was used as chronometer to determine ultra-short time delays in quantum reaction processes. Finally, an outlook is given when in near future relativistic heavy ion beams are available which allow a novel kind of “pump & probe” experiments on molecular systems with a few zeptosecond resolution. However, such experiments are only feasible if the complete many-particle fragmentation process can be imaged with high momentum resolution by state-of-the-art multi-particle coincidence technique.

Resumo:
Do U.S. households with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drive less or more than U.S. households with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs)? Answering this question is important to policymakers and transportation planners concerned with reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions of greenhouse gases from transportation. So far, this question has not been answered satisfactorily, possibly because of the relatively low number of EVs in the U.S. until recently, but also because of methodological issues. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by analyzing data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). We apply propensity score matching (PSM), a quasi-experimental method, to examine the differences in self-reported annual mileage and calculated daily mileage for various trip purposes among households with only BEVs (BEV-only), households with both BEVs and ICEVs (BEV+), and households without BEVs (non-BEV households). Our findings indicate that households with BEVs drive fewer annual miles than non-BEV households, but typically travel no less than they do for daily activities. This apparent discrepancy is likely due to taking fewer longer trips because the public charging infrastructure was still in its infancy in 2017, and its reliability was questionable. As technological progress is helping to overcome current battery limitations, policymakers may consider measures for fostering fast charging technologies while pondering new measures to fund both the charging infrastructure and the road network.

Resumo:
The overall theme of this project was to increase the speed of analysis for monitoring pesticide residues in food. Traditionally, analytical methods for multiple pesticides are time-consuming, expensive, laborious, wasteful, and ineffective to meet critical needs related to food safety. Faster and better methods were needed to provide more cost-effective detection of chemical contaminants, and thus provide a variety of benefits to agriculture. This overarching goal to speed and improve pesticide analysis was successfully accomplished even beyond what was originally proposed by the investigators in 1998. At that time, the main objectives of this project were: 1) to further develop a direct sample introduction (DSI) device that enables fast sampling and introduction of blended-only agricultural products for analysis by gas chromatography (GC); 2) to evaluate, establish, and further develop the method of simultaneous pulsed flame photometric detector (PFPD) and mass spectrometry (MS) detection for enhanced pesticide identification capabilities; and 3) to develop a new and novel MS pesticide analysis method, based on the use of supersonic molecular beams (SMB) for sampling and ionization. The first and third objectives were successfully accomplished as proposed, and the feasibility of the second objective was already demonstrated. The capabilities of the GC/SMB-MS approach alone were so useful for pesticide analysis that the simultaneous use of a PFPD was considered superfluous. Instead, the PFPD was investigated in combination with an electron-capture detector for low-cost, simultaneous analysis of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides in fatty foods. Three important, novel research projects not originally described in the proposal were also accomplished: 1) development of the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method for pesticides in foods; 2) development and optimization of a method using low-pressure (LP) GC/MS to speed pesticide residue analysis; and 3) innovative application of analyte protectants to improve the GC analysis of important problematic pesticides. All of the accomplishments from this project are expected to have strong impact to the analytical community and implications to agriculture and food safety. For one, an automated DSI approach has become commercially available in combination with GC/MS for the analysis of pesticide residues. Meanwhile, the PFPD has become the selective detector of choice for the analysis of organophosphorus pesticides. Great strides were made in SMB-MS through the manufacture of a prototype "Supersonic GC/MS" instrument, which displayed many advantages over commercial GC/MS instruments. Most notably, the QuEChERS method is already being disseminated to routine monitoring labs and has shown great promise to improve pesticide analytical capabilities and increase lab productivity. The implications of these developments to agriculture will be to increase the percentage of food monitored and the scope of residues detected in the food, which will serve to improve food safety. Developed and developing countries alike will be able to use these methods to lower costs and improve results, thus imported/exported food products will have better quality without affecting price or availability. This will help increase trade between nations and mitigate certain disputes over residue levels in imported foods. The improved enforcement of permissible residue levels provided by these methods will have the effect to promote good agricultural practices among previously obstinate farmers who felt no repercussions from illegal or harmful practices. Furthermore, the methods developed can be used in the field to analyze samples quickly and effectively, or to screen for high levels of dangerous chemicals that may intentionally or accidentally appear in the food supply.

i. List the original objectives, as defined in the approved proposal, and any revisions made at the beginning or during the course of project. Our objectives were: 1) develop state-of-the-art functional genomics tools for B. terrestris. These resources will be then used to: 2) characterize genes and molecular pathways that are associated with reproduction, 3) characterize genes and molecular pathways associated with specialization in foraging or nursing activities, and 4) determine the extent to which juvenile hormone (JH) is involved in the regulation of reproduction and division of labor. 5) Use RNA interference to down regulate genes associated with reproductive physiology, division of labor, or both. A decrease in the cost of RNA sequencing enabled us to further use the BARD support to extend our research to three additional related projects: A) The regulation of body size which is crucial for understanding both reproduction (castedetermination) and (size based) division of labor in bumblebees. B) Analyze RNA editing in our RNA sequencing data which improves the molecular understanding of the systems we study. C) The influence of JH on the fat body in addition to the brain on which we focused in our proposal. The fat body is a key tissue regulating insect reproduction and health. ii. Background to the topic. Bees are by far the most important pollinators in agricultural and natural ecosystems. The recent collapse of honey bee populations, together with declines in wild bee (including bumble bee) populations, puts their vital pollination services under severe threat. A promising strategy for circumventing this risk is the domestication and mass-rearing of non-Apis bees. This approach has been successfully implemented for several bumble bees including Bombusterrestris in Israel, and B. impatiens in the US, which are mass-reared in captivity. In spite of their critical economic and environmental value, little is known about the physiology and molecular biology of bumble bees. In this collaborative project we developed functional genomics tools for the bumble bee B. terrestris and use these tools for a first thorough study on the physiology and molecular biology of reproduction, dominance, and division of labor in a bumble bee. iii. Major conclusions, solutions. The valuable molecular data of this project together with the functional tools and molecular information generated in this BARD funded project significantly advanced the understanding of bumblebee biology which is essential for maintaining their vital pollination services for US and Israel agriculture.
