Purpose – This paper aims to approach the issue of premium offers in Italy by discussing the case study of Fabbri, a firm operating since 1905 in the business of liqueurs, syrups and semi-manufactured products for ice cream. Design/methodology/approach – The research takes into analysis three marketing schemes, all related to direct premium promotions, adopted by Fabbri at various times during the twentieth century. The evolution of the company’s marketing strategy is outlined drawing on several types of sources: archive documents, posters and labels and audiovisual material. It is analysed in the socio-economic and legal context of twentieth century Italy, and in comparison with premium offers in the USA and Europe. Findings – The study argues that direct premium may represent a long-lasting and efficient marketing strategy when a firm is able to adapt it to a context that changes over time. Fabbri not only used premium offers to launch its products but also to consolidate its brand image. Research limitations/implications – By showing that innovative promotions are not necessarily connected to large firms, Fabbri’s case suggests that further research should be carried out to outline marketing policies carried out by small to medium enterprises. Originality/value – Much has been written on premium offers in the USA and in Europe, but very little on such types of promotions in Italy, especially with reference to direct premiums. This study fills this gap and documents that a small family-owned firm was able to carry out innovative marketing policies as far as in the 1920s.

Evolution (Lucile Hadžihalilović, 2016) offers a vision of Donna J. Haraway's feminist intervention where Haraway posits her neologistic chthulucene to signify the interpenetration of species in response to anthropocene discourse which recuperates the patriarchal narrative of homo faber – the human as maker. The risks and tribulations of cross-species “becoming-with”, as Haraway puts it, are dramatized in Evolution. The ambiguously defined, subaqueous species of the film nurture and care for human boys then impregnate them with squid-like creatures that are incubated in the child's mid-section. The film is marked by images that are difficult to anthropomorphise, eliciting corporeal engagements with tentacular sea creatures that are alienating and confronting. Evolution presents images that are in sympathy with Haraway's chthulucene, in which the subject dissolves into the matter of “humus” or “compost” that ontologically bind the human and nonhuman alike. The film signals a reverse evolution in which humans return to the sea, a temporal backwards turn that Haraway similarly advocates in her book. While Evolution plays out Haraway's chthonic vision in which it shows a subject, Nicolas, embedded in a compost community, the film nonetheless situates this subject as bounded and coherent. Evolution does not, ultimately, forego the human but offers a chance to comprehend the human's transformation in the historical moment of the anthropocene.

Abstract This article reassesses the art of sculptor Baron Konstantin Rausch von Traubenberg, one of many Russian émigré artists who fell into oblivion during the Soviet era. He worked in a variety of materials and genres, created portraits of his contemporaries, equestrian figurines, historical and genre groups, models for the firm of Fabergé & Co., and commissions for the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg. His multifaceted career, launched already before the revolution, constitutes a significant phenomenon when examined in conjunction with his subsequent work abroad.

Jonathan Glazer’s 2013 film Under the Skin is a Gothicized science fictional narrative about sexuality, alterity and the limits of humanity. The film’s protagonist, an alien female, passing for an attractive human, seduces unwary Scottish males, leading them to a slimy, underwater/womblike confinement where their bodies dissolve and nothing but floating skins remain. In this paper, I look at the film’s engagement with the notions of consumption, the alien as devourer trope, and the nature of the ‘other’, comparing this filmic depiction with Michael Faber’s novel on which the film is based. I examine the film’s reinvention of Faber’s novel as a more open-ended allegory of the human condition as always already ‘other’. In Faber’s novel, the alien female seduces and captures the men who are consumed and devoured by an alien race, thus providing a reversal of the human species’ treatment of animals as mere food. Glazer’s film, however, chooses to remain ambiguous about the alien female’s ‘nature’ to the very end. Thus, the film remains a more open-ended meditation about alterity, the destructive potential of sexuality, and the fear of consumption which lies at the heart of the Gothic’s interrogation of porous boundaries.

In this paper, a high-fineness fiber-optic Fabry–Perot high-temperature pressure sensor, based on MEMS technology, is proposed and experimentally verified. The Faber–Perot cavity of the pressure sensor is formed by the anodic bonding of a sensitive silicon diaphragm and a Pyrex glass; a high-fineness interference signal is obtained by coating the interface surface with a high-reflection film, so as to simplify the signal demodulation system. The experimental results show that the pressure sensitivity of this sensor is 55.468 nm/MPa, and the temperature coefficient is 0.01859 nm/°C at 25~300 °C. The fiber-optic pressure sensor has the following advantages: high fineness, high temperature tolerance, high consistency and simple demodulation, resulting in a wide application prospect in the field of high-temperature pressure testing.

In the theoretical part I summarized basic information about marketing mix, brand and strategic brand management. In the practical section there is an introduction of marketing strategies of all the Pierre Fabre brands. Furthermore I focus on detailed analysis of A-Derma marketing strategy and suggest how to imporove it. The analysis evaluates marketing mix and individual campaigns in 2010 and proposes a strategy for 2011.

In this Masters thesis, a method for independent characterization of nonlinear electro-optic (EO) tensor components (r13, r33) of organic polymers is presented. Organic non-linear optical (NLO) polymers provide low cost and easily process able photonic devices. The characterization setup proposed in this thesis is controlled by a LabVIEW program that allows fast, accurate and automated measurement of r13 and r33. The setup measures transmission spectrum of a Fabry-Perot cavity, filled with an NLO polymer, as a function of incident angle. It uses the changes in refractive index in the polymer due to the electro-optic effect to measure the tensor components. This method is then utilized for characterization of a Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), Disperse Red1 (DR1) guest-host blend sample.

This essay examines an excerpt of the wide range of animated films that our children has access to in Sweden today.It takes up questions about what kind of messages the films are delivering, if there are certain patterns that are being followed, differences between the films relating to the cultures where they’re from, but above all, what the hero is about and what kind of shape he or she assumes. The film analyses that are being made are anchored in two theoretical investigations; one about how children are influenced by-, and how they use, the stories that are being told in films to develop their own identity. The other one treats classical and traditional patterns and genres in stories.


Denna uppsats undersöker ett utdrag av det utbud av tecknade filmer som våra barn tar del av här i Sverige i dag. Den tar upp frågor som vilka budskap filmerna egentligen sänder ut, om det finns vissa givna mönster som följs, skillnader mellan filmerna i förhållande till de kulturer de kommer ifrån, men framförallt hur hjälterollen ser ut och gestaltas. De filmanalyser som utförs förankras i två teoretiska undersökningar, dels en om hur barn påverkas av och använder filmsagor i sitt utvecklings- och identitetsarbete och dels en som behandlar traditionella klassiska mönster och genrer.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá technologií tlustých vrstev a jejím možným použitím pro nekonvenční aplikace. První část práce je rešeršní a zaměřuje se především na aplikace tlustovrstvé technologie v různých oblastech použití. V teoretické části práce je dále popsána technologie LTCC, včetně technologických postupů výroby. V praktické části jsou řešeny dvě aplikace v tlustovrstvé technologii. Jedná se návrh a výrobu vysokofrekvenčního filtru a optického senzoru tlaku technologií LTCC. V závěru práce jsou provedena měření a jsou zhodnoceny dosažené výsledky.

This thesis treats the development of packaging and integration methods for the cost-efficient encapsulation and packaging of microelectromechanical (MEMS) devices. The packaging of MEMS devices is often more costly than the device itself, partly because the packaging can be crucial for the performance of the device. For devices which contain liquids or needs to be enclosed in a vacuum, the packaging can account for up to 80% of the total cost of the device. The first part of this thesis presents the integration scheme for an optical dye thin film NO2-gas sensor, designed using cost-efficient implementations of wafer-scale methods. This work includes design and fabrication of photonic subcomponents in addition to the main effort of integration and packaging of the dye-film. A specific proof of concept target was for NO2 monitoring in a car tunnel. The second part of this thesis deals with the wafer-scale packaging methods developed for the sensing device. The developed packaging method, based on low-temperature plastic deformation of gold sealing structures, is further demonstrated as a generic method for other hermetic liquid and vacuum packaging applications. In the developed packaging methods, the mechanically squeezed gold sealing material is both electroplated microstruc- tures and wire bonded stud bumps. The electroplated rings act like a more hermetic version of rubber sealing rings while compressed in conjunction with a cavity forming wafer bonding process. The stud bump sealing processes is on the other hand applied on completed cavities with narrow access ports, to seal either a vacuum or liquid inside the cavities at room temperature. Additionally, the resulting hermeticity of primarily the vacuum sealing methods is thoroughly investigated. Two of the sealing methods presented require permanent mechanical fixation in order to complete the packaging process. Two solutions to this problem are presented in this thesis. First, a more traditional wafer bonding method using tin-soldering is demonstrated. Second, a novel full-wafer epoxy underfill-process using a microfluidic distribution network is demonstrated using a room temperature process.

The cultivation of soybeans occupies a large area of land in Brazil, but pest attack, despite all the technology already developed, especially in relation to chemical insecticides, remains a determining factor for the success of the crop, since such substances, when bad used as a single tactic, become inefficient and pose a danger to the environment and health. In this context, the objective of this work was to verify the use of a compound of mineral origin in the control of E. heros, the main pest of the soybean crop, as an alternative to the conventional method. To this end, suspensions of 0, 4, 8 and 16% of the FertP® product in aqueous suspension were prepared along with 0.01% Tween, which were sprayed onto E. heros eggs up to 24 hours old. The incubation period and number of hatched insects were evaluated. First-instar nymphs, recently hatched, were also submitted to spraying, evaluating the mortality and duration of the instar. To verify the longevity and reproductive capacity of adults, couples with up to 48h of ecdise were immersed in suspensions and transferred to cages, being evaluated daily for 32 days regarding longevity, number of eggs and eggs viability. After compiling and analyzing the collected data, it was concluded that the product under study did not present any significant effect on any of the biological parameters of the soya-brown bug
O cultivo da soja ocupa grande extensão de terra no Brasil, porém, o ataque de pragas, apesar de toda tecnologia já desenvolvida, principalmente em relação aos inseticidas químicos, continua sendo fator determinante do sucesso da lavoura, uma vez que tais substâncias, quando mal utilizadas e como tática única, se tornam ineficientes e um perigo ao ambiente e a saúde. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o emprego de um composto de origem mineral no controle de E. heros, principal praga da cultura da soja, como um método alternativo ao convencional. Para isso, foram preparadas suspensões de 0, 4, 8 e 16% do produto FertP® em suspensão aquosa, juntamente a 0,01% de Tween, as quais foram pulverizadas sobre ovos de E. heros com até 24 horas de idade. Avaliaram-se o período de incubação e número de insetos eclodidos. Ninfas de 1º instar, recém-eclodidas, também foram submetidas à pulverização, sendo avaliada a mortalidade e duração do instar. Para verificação da longevidade e capacidade reprodutiva de adultos, casais com até 48h de ecdise, foram imersos nas suspensões e transferidos para gaiolas, sendo avaliados diariamente, durante 32 dias, quanto à longevidade, número de ovos ovipositados e viabilidade dos ovos. Após compilação e analise dos dados coletados concluiu-se que o produto em estudo não apresentou efeito significativo sobre nenhum dos parâmetros biológicos do percevejo-marrom-da-soja aqui avaliados.

L’imagerie multispectrale permet d’améliorer la détection et la reconnaissance de cibles dans les applications de surveillance. Elle consiste à analyser des images de la même scène acquises simultanément dans plusieurs bandes spectrales grâce à un filtrage. Cette thèse étudie la possibilité de réaliser une matrice de 4 filtres Fabry Pérot (FP) intégrés 3D et ajustables par actionnement électrostatique dans le domaine visible-proche infrarouge. Les miroirs fixes des filtres FP sont des multicouches ZnS/YF₃ déposés sur un wafer de borosilicate, et les miroirs mobiles sont des membranes multicouches PECVD SiNH/SiOH encastrées sur une structure mobile très compacte micro-usinée dans un wafer en silicium. Les performances optiques des filtres FP ont été optimisées en prenant en compte la dissymétrie et le déphasage à la réflexion des miroirs. La structure mobile a été modélisée par éléments finis pour minimiser ses déformations lors de l’actionnement. Les étapes critiques des procédés de fabrication des miroirs mobiles en technologie Si ou SOI ont été mises au point : i) la fabrication et la libération par gravures profondes DRIE et XeF₂ des membranes multicouches avec une contrainte résiduelle ajustée par recuit et une réflectance voisine de 50% dans une large gamme spectrale, ii) le contrôle des vitesse de la gravure DRIE avec des motifs temporaires permettant la gravure simultanée de motifs de largeur et de profondeur variables, et iii) la délimitation de motifs sur surfaces fortement structurées à l’aide de pochoirs alignés mécaniquement ou de films secs photosensibles. Ces travaux ouvrent la voie vers une réalisation complète d’une matrice de filtres FP intégrés 3D
Multispectral imaging is used to improve target detection and identification in monitoring applications. It consists in analyzing images of the same scene simultaneously recorded in several spectral bands owing to a filtering. This thesis investigates the possibility to realize, an array of four 3D integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) filters that are tunable in the visible-near infrared range by electrostatic actuation. The fixed mirrors of the FP filters are ZnS/YF₃ multilayers deposited on a borosilicate wafer, and the movable mirrors are PECVD SiNH/SiOH multilayer membranes clamped in a very compact movable structure micromachined in a Si wafer. A 3rd glass wafer is used for filters packaging. Optical performances of the FP filters have been optimized by taking into account the asymmetry and the reflection phase shift of the mirrors and the mobile structure has been modeled by finite elements analysis notably to minimize its deformation during actuation. The critical steps of the movable mirrors fabrication process in Si or SOI technology have been developed : i) the fabrication and the release by DRIE and XeF₂ etching of 8 or 12 layers membranes with a residual stress tunable by annealing and a reflectance close to 50% in broad wavelength range (570-900nm), ii) the control with temporary patterns of the simultaneous deep etching of patterns with different widths and depths, and iv) various patterning techniques on highly structured surfaces based on shadow masks (with mechanical alignment) or laminated photosensitive dry films. These results open the way towards the full realization of an array of 3D integrated FP filters

This work presents the development of an FPGA-based optical interrogation system of multiplexed FBG sensors. The Fabry-Perot filter is used to implement the tunable filter method, as a demodulator for FBG sensors. The tuning signal generation for Fabry-Perot filter and the data aquisition are implemented and syncronized em FPGA. Peak-detection algorithms, based on centroid and FIR filter, are implemented em FPGA. The peak displacement detected of FBG reflected spectrum is used to refer sensed elements, such as variation of temperature and refractive index. Besides, other auxiliary digital circuits are implemented for the system configuration, visulization of the detected peak information and the serial communication to monitor entire spectra in computer. All these digital circuits are working on their own duty at the same time, synchronised by the crystal clock of FPGA. The system was used to monitor the fabrication process of an refractive index sensor. The fabricated sensor was tested by measuring the refractive index of water and sucrose. In another experiment, the system was tested by measuring the temperature of a water sample. In addition, a method to calibrate the tuning signal generator is proposed, which can also be employed in other applications that uses DA converters. Finally, the developed system was packaged to facilitate its transportation.
Este trabalho descreve a implementação de um sistema de interrogação óptico para FBGs multiplexadas, com o controle dos processos implementado em FPGA. A interrogação das FBGs é realizada por meio do método de filtro sintonizável, com o uso de filtro Fabry-Perot. Um FPGA é utilizado para gerar sinal de sintonia para o filtro Fabry-Perot e realizar a leitura do sinal espectral refletido pelas FBGs. Algoritmos de detecção de pico (centroide e filtro FIR) foram implementados no FPGA para processar os sinais refletidos por cada FBG, com o objetivo de inferir as propriedades sensoreadas, como variação de temperatura ou índice de refração. Além destes circuitos digitais, são implementados outros circuitos digitais para a configuração do sistema, para a visualização do pico detectado do sinal espectral e para o monitoramento do espectro inteiro via comunicação serial. Todos circuitos cumprem a própria função paralelamente em virtude do paralelismo do FPGA, sincronizado pelo clock do oscilador cristal do FPGA. O sistema desenvolvido foi utilizado no monitoramento do processo de fabricação de sensor de índice de refração e então na leitura do índice de refração de amostras de sacarose e água. O sistema também foi utilizado para a leitura da temperatura de amostras de água, onde foi estimada a sensibilidade e a resolução do sistema. Também foi proposto um método para a calibração do sistema, que pode ser utilizado também em outros trabalhos. O sistema final foi colocado em uma maleta para facilitar o seu transporte para o local de uso.

For example, consider the beautiful Moorish, Persian, and other motifs in tiled floors and cloths. Among Dr. Googol’s favorite ornamental patterns are those found on century-old Russian Easter eggs that wealthy individuals and members of the royal family gave to one another. Some of these eggs were made of gold and silver and decorated with enamel, precious stones, and miniature paintings. The most splendid were commissioned by the czar from Faberge, the leading firm of Russian jewelers at the turn of the 20th century.

Abstract With the novel and (in the next chapter) plays and films, we at last encounter literature as commercial enterprise. Apart from timely loans from his publishers, Keats never received a penny from his poetry (and neither did the publishers). Mill and Wordsworth supported themselves as civil servants, offering their works principally for the edification of readers—then and, they hoped, for all time. Coleridge, who survived mainly on donations from patrons and friends, actually lost several hundred pounds when he published Sibylline Leaves and Biographia Literaria with the firm of Rest Fenner, which went bankrupt two years afterward. Eliot received all of $150, plus a prize of $2000, for the first publication of The Waste Land. To be sure, Eliot later became a shrewd businessman of letters, driving a hard bargain as a director of the London publisher Faber and Faber; but when he produced The Waste Land, he and his publishers were still operating in a nineteenth-century tradition of poetry writing and publishing primarily for the sake of art and fame.

In Amor Pedestre (1914), part of a series of silent Italian comedy shorts directed by and starring Marcel Fabre, shoes truly take centre stage, as the actors are shot entirely from the knees down. While the emotions, behaviours and gestures of the evolving story are conveyed solely through the movement of the performers’ feet, it is through shoes that we come to recognise the characters, their gender and their class. By reducing the whole of the actor’s body to a part and questioning the notion of the face as the essential element in silent film, Amor Pedestre subverts established conventions and challenges traditional film grammar.

The impact of new technologies, particularly in the fields of communication, transportation, and armaments, is evident in the work of numerous twentieth-century writers and philosophers, from the Italian Futurist F. T. Marinetti’s celebration of speed, to Walter Benjamin’s championing of mechanical reproduction, to Martin Heidegger’s reflections on the ‘question concerning technology’. Samuel Beckett’s engagement with this question is distinctive in a number of respects. In his early work, he suggests that modern technologies have a revelatory power, and he goes on to take advantage of the potentialities of various technological means in his later works, including tape-recording, radio, film, and television. However, he also insists upon a relation between technology and death, one that goes beyond the familiar idea that certain modern technologies have unprecedented destructive potential. For Beckett charts the exhaustion not only of various modern technologies, but also of technē as such. Locating Beckett’s engagement with the question of technology within its historical context, this chapter identifies the place of technology within Beckett’s negative aesthetics, before exploring some of the ways in which that aesthetics is realized, particularly in Beckett’s post-war works.

This chapter examines the work of Bertolt Brecht as a source of formative energy for Theo Angelopoulos. It reads Angelopoulos' 1970s films with an eye for Brechtian forms and tropes, focusing specifically on the Brechtian concept of Gestus and its application within the filmic medium. The chapter first considers Brecht's insistence that film should be seen like a a series of tableaux, which do not produce ‘wirkenden Handlung’ (plot development), but have a sense of autonomy. It then explains how Angelopoulos' cinema bridges the early and the late period of cinematic modernism, how he thematises the act of representation in his films, and his employment of a recurring theme in modernist cinema: the ‘circular trajectory’. It also analyses the Fabel, or collective narrative, in Angelopoulos' historical tetralogy (Days of '36, The Travelling Players, and Megalexandros).

One of the techniques used to make smart spatial light modulators (S-SLM) involves the deposition of a thin film of electrooptic lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) on silicon-on-sapphire substrate next to silicon circuits. By fabricating silicon devices prior to deposition of PLZT films, VLSI circuits of any complexity can be achieved and linked to PLZT modulators on the same sub-strate. The amount of light modulation that can be achieved through thin PLZT fdms can be dramatically improved by placing the film in a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The interferometer would also offer attractive features such as high speeds (due to low intrinsic capacitance) and low switching energies. The first step in the development of Fabry-Perot interferometers involves the deposition of PLZT films on a reflective layer such as highly oriented thin platinum films grown on silicon or sapphire substrates. A final step in the process would be the deposition of a top layer of a mirror stack.

When a nematic film was inserted in a Fabry-Perot interferometer, the output would break into periodic oscillation at sufficiently high input laser intensity[1]. It can be proved that in the system of Ref.[1], the periodic oscillation can not develop to chaotic motion for a constant input because it is a two-dimensional autonomous system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the optical frequency-locking and chaos of a nematic liquid crystal film in a Fabry-Perot interferometer with a periodic optical drive.

These materials lend themselves to incorporation within Fabry-Perot structures to form an electro-optic modulator [2], with potential for high modulation speeds and a wide range of commercially viable applications which are enabled by their ease of processing.

Thin-film semiconductor Fabry-Perot interferometers with nonlinear intermediate layers are of particular interest as components for optical data processing since under certain conditions they can perform optical switching and modulation. The principle of such operations is the sweeping of the cavity transmission (or reflection) peak in response to control pulses. For a high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity, a small change in the intracavity refractive index can translate into a large change in the cavity reflection and transmission. Optical bistability in thin-film interferometers (TFIs) with semiconductor intermediate layers of ZnS, ZnSe etc., synthesised by thermal deposition and molecular beam epitaxy, have been achieved earlier by a long-wavelength shift of the transmission profile due to the thermo-optic nonlinearity mechanism with microsecond relaxation times [1, 2].
