In this article, the authors present foundational elements related to argument extraction in opinion texts with the objective to design a model of how consumers develop argumentation in such texts. A second goal is to analyze and synthesize user preferences and therefore user value systems from these arguments. They show that (1) within the context of opinionated expressions, a number of evaluative expressions with a ‘heavy’ semantic load receive an argumentative interpretation, and (2) that the association of an evaluative expression with a discourse structure such as an elaboration, an illustration, or a reformulation must also be interpreted as an argument. The authors develop a conceptual semantics of these discourse structures and show how they are analyzed using the Dislog programming language, running on the <TextCoop> platform, dedicated to discourse analysis.

An Argumentation mining system can analyze a large volume of text data through a variety of sources. Nowadays it is highly useful in the areas of business, economics, and finance with digital marketing being the most promising field along with social media. It is the study of corpus-based discourse analysis that involves the automatic identification of argumentative structure in text. Initially, AM talks about extracting structured arguments from natural text, often unstructured or noisy text. Theoretical approaches of AM and pragmatic schemes that satisfy the needs of social media generated data, recognizing the need for adapting more flexible and expandable schemes, capable of adjusting to argumentation conditions that exist in social media. In this scenario it is a very challenging argumentation scheme able to identify the distinct sub-task and capture the needs of social media text, revealing the need for adopting a more flexible and extensible framework. Corpus-based Machine Learning of linguistic annotations has enabled researchers to identify repetitive linguistic patterns of language use and to uncover hidden meaning in all areas of Natural Language Processing.

Folksonomies are one of the technologies of Web 2.0 that permit users to annotate resources on the Web. In this paper, the authors propose an integrated approach to extract ontological structures from unstructured and semi-structured resources. Our proposal overcome limitations of existing approaches. It gives a formal, simple, and efficient solution to the tag clustering and disambiguation problem. Moreover, their approach doesn't need any ontology as an upper guide during the generation process. The generated ontology can be used to enhance various tasks such as ontology evolution and enrichment.

Modern separation methods of particles are usually prepared by large equipments. In this study, microfluidic chips with backward-facing-step (BFS) microchannel structures and centrifugal force are used to extract particle-free fluid from physical samples at the branch. Numerical simulation and experimental studies were performed to investigate the effects of inlet Reynolds number ( Re 0), as well as the particle-free fluid outlet Reynolds number ( Re 1), on the minimum radius of particles (R) that can be excluded from the particle-free fluid outlet channel. The fraction of the volumetric flow rate of particle-free extraction α (=extraction flow rate/inlet flow rate) was also obtained to evaluate the efficiency of particle-free extraction. Based on the numerical and experimental results, it is found that the design with 90° elbow inlet channel has a better performance than straight inlet channel. In this experiment, 1.0 μm radius of particles can be successfully separated from the fluid, and the volumetric fraction of the extraction flow rate was approximately 1.8% when inlet and outlet Reynolds numbers are 90 and 3.0 respectively.

This paper describes a nonlinear deterministic estimator based on cumulants for the extraction of modal parameters. The signal analysed is composed of multiple exponentially damped real sinusoids in unknown additive noise. Cumulants reduce significantly the effects of noise and are also an efficient way of compressing the sampled data. In modal analysis a sensor may be unable to detect some modes of vibration due to its location. Cumulants estimated from real data sampled at different locations and instances are added directly together. This average cumulant function will contain the eigenvalues for all excited modes of vibration. Finding the frequencies and corresponding damping factors is therefore reduced to solving a single average cumulant function. The performance of the proposed estimator is examined and compared with the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm via simulations.

Mannitol is the most abundant polyol in nature and has wide commercial applications due to its properties in the food, chemical, medical, and pharmaceutical industries. Mannitol was traditionally produced from kelp, but this process was eliminated due to high water and energy consumption and gradually replaced by methods with less energy consumption and environmentally friendly practices. Studies show that brown seaweed contains large amounts of mannitol. Therefore, this paper intends to describe the structure of this sugar alcohol present in brown algae, its commercial production, and its biosynthetic pathway in algae, as well as its medical and nutritional applications.

Numerical information plays an important role in various fields such as scientific, financial, social, statistics, and news. Most prior studies adopt unsupervised methods by designing complex handcrafted pattern-matching rules to extract numerical information, which can be difficult to scale to the open domain. Other supervised methods require extra time, cost, and knowledge to design, understand, and annotate the training data. To address these limitations, we propose QuantityIE, a novel approach to extracting numerical information as structured representations by exploiting syntactic features of both constituency parsing (CP) and dependency parsing (DP). The extraction results may also serve as distant supervision for zero-shot model training. Our approach outperforms existing methods from two perspectives: (1) the rules are simple yet effective, and (2) the results are more self-contained. We further propose a numerical information retrieval approach based on QuantityIE to answer analytical queries. Experimental results on information extraction and retrieval demonstrate the effectiveness of QuantityIE in extracting numerical information with high fidelity.

AbstractThe linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is one of popular means for linear feature extraction. It usually performs well when the global data structure is consistent with the local data structure. Other frequently-used approaches of feature extraction usually require linear, independence, or large sample condition. However, in real world applications, these assumptions are not always satisfied or cannot be tested. In this paper, we introduce an adaptive method, local kernel nonparametric discriminant analysis (LKNDA), which integrates conventional discriminant analysis with nonparametric statistics. LKNDA is adept in identifying both complex nonlinear structures and the ad hoc rule. Six simulation cases demonstrate that LKNDA have both parametric and nonparametric algorithm advantages and higher classification accuracy. Quartic unilateral kernel function may provide better robustness of prediction than other functions. LKNDA gives an alternative solution for discriminant cases of complex nonlinear feature extraction or unknown feature extraction. At last, the application of LKNDA in the complex feature extraction of financial market activities is proposed.

Abstract: Ross (1967) observed that the coordinate structure constraint can be violated in certain semantically asymmetric structures. In this article we consider one of these structures, namely type A coordination, in detail (the terminology is from Lakoff 1986; an example is Here's the whisky I went to the store and bought ). We present experimental evidence showing that the pattern of argument and adjunct extraction from type A coordinate structures matches the pattern of argument and adjunct extraction from structures containing rationale clauses in all crucial respects. This near-perfect parallel behavior suggests that, like rationale clauses, the second conjunct in a type A coordination is an adjunct (see also Brown 2017). We explore the consequences of this finding for both interpretive and syntactic analyses of asymmetric coordination.

Abstract. In this paper, a general framework is proposed for live extraction of curvilinear structures such as roads or ridges from airborne LiDAR raw data, in the scope of present and past man-environment interaction studies. Unlike most approaches in literature, classified ground points are directly processed here, rather than derived products such as digital terrain models (DTM). This allows to detect possible lacks of ground points due to LiDAR signal occlusions caused by dense coniferous canopies. An efficient and simple solution based on discrete geometry tools is described for supervised context in which the user just indicates where the extraction should take place. Fast response times are required to ensure a good man-system interaction. The framework performance is first evaluated on the example of the extraction of forest roads in a mountainous area, as these objects are well marked in the DTM and hence provide some kind of ground truth. Good execution time and accuracy level are reported. Then this framework is applied to the detection of prominent curvilinear structures, which are much more diffuse objects, but of greater interest than roads in the scope of the present project. Achieved results show high potential of the proposed approach to help archaeologists and geomorphologists in finding areas of interest for future prospection using LiDAR data.

Multi-layer complex structures are widely used in large-scale engineering structures because of their diverse combinations of properties and excellent overall performance. However, multi-layer complex structures are prone to interlaminar debonding damage during use. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor debonding damage in engineering applications to determine structural integrity. In this paper, a damage information extraction method with ladder feature mining for Lamb waves is proposed. The method is able to optimize and screen effective damage information through ladder-type damage extraction. It is suitable for evaluating the severity of debonding damage in aluminum-foamed silicone rubber, a novel multi-layer complex structure. The proposed method contains ladder feature mining stages of damage information selection and damage feature fusion, realizing a multi-level damage information extraction process from coarse to fine. The results show that the accuracy of damage severity assessment by the damage information extraction method with ladder feature mining is improved by more than 5% compared to other methods. The effectiveness and accuracy of the method in assessing the damage severity of multi-layer complex structures are demonstrated, providing a new perspective and solution for damage monitoring of multi-layer complex structures.

This study investigates the application of scattering structures to the metal layer in a DMD (Dielectric/Metal/Dielectric) configuration through plasma treatment. The purpose is to enhance the light extraction efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Different plasma conditions were explored to create scattering structures on the metal layer. The fabricated devices were characterized for their electrical and optical properties. The results demonstrate that the introduction of scattering structures through plasma treatment effectively improves the light extraction efficiency of OLEDs. Specifically, using O2-plasma treatment on the metal layer resulted in significant enhancements in the total transmittance, haze, and figure of merit. These findings suggest that incorporating scattering structures within the DMD configuration can effectively promote light extraction in OLEDs, leading to enhanced overall performance and light efficiency.

Hydrogels are smart-swelling 3D structures capable of incorporating/expelling water while maintaining their structures. When combined with electroactive materials, such as conducting polymers, the resulting composite may present tunable properties. Herein, the preparation and characterization of alginate-polypyrrole composite hydrogels is described using chemical polymerization to form polypyrrole inside and around alginate beads, employing two simple protocols. These materials were qualitatively tested as extraction phases, using the solid-phase extraction technique, for the pre-concentration of contaminants of emerging concern (atrazine, caffeine, and progesterone). Compared to alginate alone, the composite materials showed a modified extraction capacity, especially for the extraction of progesterone. It was shown that the alginate matrix also contributes to the extraction, not only acting as a support but also as an active extraction media, evidencing a good combination of materials.

Based on the examination of the basic properties, the solvent extraction process (SEP) was applied with high efficiency in the extraction of bitumen from Indonesian oil sands. To separate the oil sands, different organic solvents were first screened, and the extraction effects were analyzed to select a suitable solvent. Then, the effects of operating conditions on the extraction rate of bitumen were investigated. Finally, the compositions and structures of the bitumen obtained under suitable conditions were analyzed. The results showed that the Indonesian oil sands were oil-wet oil sands with a bitumen content of 24.93%, containing a large number of asphaltenes and resins with high polarity and complex structures. The separation performance was affected by different organic solvents and operating conditions. It was shown that the closer the structure and polarity of the selected solvent is to the solute, the better the extraction effect. The extraction rate of bitumen reached 18.55% when toluene was used as the extraction solvent under the operating conditions of V (solvent):m (oil sands) 3:1, temperature 40 °C, stirring velocity 300 r/min, time 30 min. The method could also be applied to the separation of other oil-wet oil sands. The compositions and structures of bitumen can guide the separation and comprehensive use of industrial oil sands.

An elusive property of that-clauses following manner-of-speaking verbs is that they do not behave like that-clauses following other non-factive verbs when it comes to the availability of wh-extraction, main clause phenomena and complementizer drop. Non-factive that-clauses allow wh-extraction, main clause phenomena and complementizer drop, but manner-of-speaking that-clauses resist them. In addition, the behavior of manner-of-speaking that-clauses patterns with noun complement clauses and that-clauses following the pronoun it. In this paper, I argue that the referential and adjunct status of manner-of-speaking that-clauses, noun complement clauses and that-clauses following the pronoun it is responsible for their shared restrictions on wh-extraction, main clause phenomena and complementizer drop. Specifically, I argue all three of these that-clauses are referential adjuncts in a close apposition relationship with a nominal object.

Feature extraction is essential for chemical property estimation of molecules using machine learning. Recently, graph neural networks have attracted attention for feature extraction from molecules. However, existing methods focus only on specific structural information, such as node relationship. In this paper, we propose a novel graph convolutional neural network that performs feature extraction with simultaneously considering multiple structures. Specifically, we propose feature extraction paths specialized in node, edge, and three-dimensional structures. Moreover, we propose an attention mechanism to aggregate the features extracted by the paths. The attention aggregation enables us to select useful features dynamically. The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperformed previous methods.

Kernel methods have produced state-of-the-art results for a number of NLP tasks such as relation extraction, but suffer from poor scalability due to the high cost of computing kernel similarities between natural language structures. A recently proposed technique, kernelized locality-sensitive hashing (KLSH), can significantly reduce the computational cost, but is only applicable to classifiers operating on kNN graphs. Here we propose to use random subspaces of KLSH codes for efficiently constructing an explicit representation of NLP structures suitable for general classification methods. Further, we propose an approach for optimizing the KLSH model for classification problems by maximizing an approximation of mutual information between the KLSH codes (feature vectors) and the class labels. We evaluate the proposed approach on biomedical relation extraction datasets, and observe significant and robust improvements in accuracy w.r.t. state-ofthe-art classifiers, along with drastic (orders-of-magnitude) speedup compared to conventional kernel methods.

The functional group structures of coal molecules are one of the most important factors affecting spontaneous combustion. However, it is difficult to determine the exact effects of such structures. Extraction technology is able to modify the functional groups in coal as a means of inhibiting spontaneous combustion reactions. The present work extracted coal from the Caojiatan mine in northern Shaanxi, China, with various solvents. The extraction effectiveness of these solvents was found to decrease in the order of dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) > water > n-hexane > cyclohexane + AOT + ethanol > cyclohexane > ethanol > methanol. With the exception of the AOT, the concentration of functional groups in the extracted coal was decreased compared with that in a control specimen extracted using only water. Ethanol, n-hexane, and methanol provided the optimal extraction efficiencies in terms of capturing coal molecules with aromatic structures, aliphatic structures, and oxygen-containing groups, respectively. The results of this work are expected to assist in future research concerning the extraction of coal molecules with specific functional groups. This work also suggests new approaches to the active prevention and control of spontaneous combustion during the mining, storage, and transportation of coal.

Parton distribution functions are key quantities for us to understand the hadronic structures in high-energy scattering, but they are difficult to calculate from lattice QCD. Recent years have seen fast development of the large-momentum effective theory which allows extraction of the x-dependence of parton distribution functions from a quasi-parton distribution function that can be directly calculated on lattice. The extraction is based on a factorization formula for the quasi-parton distribution function that has been derived rigorously in perturbation theory. A systematic procedure that includes renormalization, perturbative matching, and power corrections has been established to calculate parton distribution functions. Latest progress from lattice QCD has shown promising signs that it will become an effective tool for calculating parton physics.
