Texto completo da fonteThe household use of Disinfectant and Cleaning Products (DCPs) containing irritants, and those used in a spray form is an established asthma risk factor. In consequence, consumers might seek for potentially less harmful alternatives, and turn to wipes, green products or homemade products. However, no epidemiological study investigated the effects on asthma associated with the household use of these DCPs. The main objective of this thesis was to evaluate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the household use of various DCPs and asthma. Our analyses were based on data from three French cohorts: CONSTANCES, NutriNet-Santé, and EGEA, in which household use of DCPs and asthma were assessed using standardized questionnaires. This thesis work confirmed the increased use of DCPs during the COVID-19 pandemic. We observed that a weekly use of wipes and green products was associated with current asthma and uncontrolled asthma (cross-sectional analyses). However, a weekly use of homemade products was not associated with current asthma. A persistent and an increased weekly use of both irritants/sprays and green products was associated with a higher risk of deterioration or incidence of asthma (longitudinal analyses). The results of this thesis suggest for the first time that the household use of wipes and green products is at risk for asthma, whereas the use of homemade products did not seem to have an impact on asthma. For asthma primary and secondary prevention, further studies are needed to specifically identify the compounds causing these adverse effects on respiratory health, particularly those contained in green products

Texto completo da fonteIn a context of honey bee decline, an impoverishment of queen quality, resulting in abnormal brood production and early queen renewal, has been observed worldwide. Hence, the assumption was made that fertility impairment of drones exposed to environmental stressors could explain the queen failure observed in apiaries. In order to test this assumption, original approaches to rear drones were developed in laboratory and semi-field conditions. These approaches enabled to show that the systemic insecticide Fipronil, the pathogen microsporidia Nosema ceranae and their combination disrupt drone physiology in different ways, including an impairment of the semen quality. In addition, results have highlighted the high sensitivity of the reproductive function of drone to all of these stress factors. The instrumental insemination of young queens with semen of drones exposed to Fipronil has shown a decrease in the reproductive potential of queens that resulted from a lower number and viability of spermatozoa stored in their spermatheca. Consequently, considering that the spermathecal content determines the egg-laying ability and the lifespan of queens, the risk of queen failure and colony dysfunction is higher. Thus, reproductive disorders, linked to a fertility decline of drones continuously exposed to numerous environmental stressors, could explain, at least in part, the phenomenon of honey bee decline. Thereby, an assessment of the reproductive toxicity of pollutants, including pesticides, to which drones are potentially exposed, should be considered in a future regulatory framework. In this way, the innovative methods and approaches developed in the frame of this work could represent pertinent bases to elaborate new toxicological tests that could be used in the registration procedure of pesticides

Texto completo da fonteThis five-chapter thesis provides new perspectives on diversification theory and the home-bias puzzle, which exists as an investment approach notably for European, American and Japanese investors. Indeed, information and communications technology (ICT) development has led to the emergence of new type of financial market product. Exchange-traded funds (ETF) allow investors to reach indirect exposure in their own currency (e.g. euro, U.S. dollars (USD) and yen) and invest in any sectors or asset classes. The ICT revolution has led to the emergence of new forms of algorithmic rules-based frameworks as investment approaches. One notable approach is called ‘smart beta’. In light of these, my thesis offers new insight about the home-bias puzzle and raises new questions about international investment approaches and global-asset allocations. Chapter I provides an overview of my thesis. My second chapter shows that a European investor who would like to attain ‘worldwide alternative investment exposure’ using a long-only optimised composition of euro liquid products can do it. Four out of the five most well-known worldwide alternative investment strategies are achievable through an optimised composition of ETFs denominated by euro. My third chapter shows that an American investor who would like to reach intermediate-term momentum exposure denominated by the South Korea won, Philippine peso, Indonesian rupiah, India rupiah, Australian dollars or New Zealand dollars can achieve the exact same risk/return characteristics using an optimised composition of USD ETFs. This implies that it is possible to reach an Asia–Pacific momentum factor without any exchange risk for an American investor. Finally, my fourth chapter analyses the possibility for a Japanese investor to reach ‘international commodities investment exposure’ with the same risk/return characteristics as a liquid yen product. From a scientific perspective, I first extend previous work about ETF indirect exposure and show the usefulness of ETFs in the global-asset allocation context. Second, I show that U.S., European and Japanese investors who invest only in domestically traded products do not have to lose the benefits of international diversification. Third, my thesis opens the door to third-generation smart-beta literature, explaining how to avoid exchange-rate risks and overcome the home-bias puzzle. This new ‘access factor’ approach allows investors to reach exposure in some international active investment strategies using their own currencies, allowing them to overcome the main cognitive and behavioural drivers of home-bias investing. The fifth chapter offers a final global discussion and a conclusion. Each chapter contributes to the scientific support of several specific topics. From a methodological perspective, different investment-strategy models (i.e. data-driven, optimisation and heuristic) are combined to reach the desired smart-beta exposure. Finally, my thesis asks new questions, such as ‘does ICT development and the new products coming with it on the financial markets (e.g. ETF, smart beta) tend to decrease the value added from classical diversification, and does it tend to increase financial integration?’ and ‘Do these new products create new investment approaches using an easy method to access complex investment strategies?’ ‘Do these new products overcome some of the behavioural finance paradigms?’

Texto completo da fonteIn rodents, social factors are known to modulate the pubertal transition. Hence, young female mice exposed to adult male exhibit an earlier vaginal opening than young females isolated from male. The aim of my thesis was to characterize the consequences of a precocious exposure to male in another specie, goats. Goats are seasonal breeders and due to their size the fine study of endocrine secretions is easier than in rodents. Our results highlighted that an early exposure to sexually active bucks induces a precocious puberty in young female goats. The first ovulation can be induced as early as 3.5 months old, following this induced first ovulation, goats remain cycling regularly. Females precociously exposed to bucks also exhibit an acceleration of the genital tract maturation. The level of sexual activity of the male is a crucial criteria to induce a precocious puberty in goats as exposure to castrated bucks had no effect on the age at puberty. Moreover, all females exposed to intact bucks ovulated for the first time within a month after buck started to exhibit sexual behaviors. This work revealed, in goats, a crucial role of the social environment on the regulation of sexual maturation. More precisely, it highlights that exposure to bucks is highly efficient to reactivate precociously the gonadotrope axis of youg immature goats

Texto completo da fonteThere is a growing public health concern about indoor air quality due to the time spent indoors and the presence of numerous biological and chemical pollutants. Aims: To assess indoor chemical pollutant levels, to model domestic exposure and to examine the impact of indoor chemical pollutants on the respiratory health of infants from the PARIS birth cohort, during their first year of life. Methods: Multiple self-administered questionnaires were used to gather information from parents about respiratory infections and asthma-like symptoms (wheezing, nocturnal dry cough. . . ) in their infants at ages 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Details about home characteristics and family living conditions were also collected by phone interview when the child was 1 month old, and mailed questionnaires captured changes at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Pollutant air sampling (aldehyde, volatile organic compound, nitrogendioxide and nicotine) were conducted at 1, 6, 9 and 12 months in the bedrooms of a subset of randomly selected 196infants. Repeated pollutant measurements were joined with interview and questionnaire information to construct annual pollutant exposure models for all infants. Furthermore, an environmental investigation was performed in Parisian child day care centers to document chemical exposure levels. Results: Formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide and perchlororethylene level determinants: continuous sources (particleboard, varnished parquet floor, wall coating), discontinuous sources (combustion, dry cleaning facilities) and aeration parameters were identified. At one year, around half of babies experienced at least one lower respiratory infection, and nearly half of those infections included wheezing, 14,8 % of babies suffered from a nocturnal dry cough. After known risk factors were considered, lower respiratory infections were associated with estimated formaldehyde levels, and formaldehyde exposure is also related to nocturnal dry cough, especially in infants without parental history of allergy. Conclusion: This study shows that formaldehyde exposure in early life is associated with respiratory health in infants, promoting public actions regarding emissions from materials

Texto completo da fonteThe honey bee is both an animal of production and a polylectic pollinator. It is partly because of this double status that the honey bee is one of the non-target organisms for which the effects of pesticides are evaluated before they are placed on market. Today, the procedure of risk assessment in the honey bee is reconsidered, in particular because of the gap that exists with the scientific knowledgeThis work is focused on the special case of exposure of the honey bee subjected to pesticide sprays. The intended aim is to identify points that can be improved and to propose relevant alternatives to the current registration procedure of plant protection products. First, we showed that a great variability of the DL50 exists according to pesticides. This led us to propose the use of a more protective critical toxicicty value as reference (BMD5). Second, we were interested in the exposure to pesticides when the honeybee is subjected to pesticide sprays. The exposure surface area of a bee was determined allowing the calculation of an individual dose of exposure on the basis of field rates (g/ha). Then, we focused on the specific case of an exposure to pesticides through the wings and reveal its potential importance in the exposure assessment. Finally, we showed that the honey bee has a fast pesicide metabolism contrary to what the sequencing of its genome can let think. This work provides new insights concerning the pesticide risk assessment in honey bees and highlights the importance to perform a relevant assessment of the pesticide toxicity and exposure for the calculation of pertinent the hazard quotients
