This article contributes to the quality control of digitization workflows, and to the exploitation of historical document collections, by demonstrating the utility of serendipitous exploration (as opposed to targeted searches) through the use of Document Towers, a visual representation of the physical structure of documents as architectural models. The Document Towers are evaluated via a qualitative case study on historical Swiss newspapers, a thought experiment comparing them to alternative solutions, a diagrammatic visual and numeric assessment of exploratory tasks, and several quantitative and empirical usability measurements and psychometric surveys. The experiments confirmed that both serendipitous exploration and the Document Towers visualization are objectively well-suited for the quality control and exploration of digital documents. A significant disparity in subjective usability was observed between librarians and academics, who rated the visualization concept below and above average, respectively. Other findings included the redefinition of quality control as a tool of knowledge and dialogue among stakeholders in information systems; a generic diagrammatic instrument for evaluating the outcomes of explorations; demonstrating how the adoption of novel information technology may benefit from adaptation to individual psychologies and socio-professional contexts; and, unexpectedly, novel historical insights into Swiss map-making, newspaper history, and censorship.

In the information retrieval system, relevance manifestation is pivotal and regularly based on document-term statistics, i.e., term frequency (tf), inverse document frequency (idf), etc. Query term proximity (QTP) within matched documents is mostly under-explored. In this article, a novel information retrieval framework is proposed to promote the documents among all relevant retrieved ones. The relevance estimation is a weighted combination of document statistics and query term statistics, and term-term proximity is simply aggregates of diverse user preferences aspects in query formation, thus adapted into the framework with conventional relevance measures. Intuitively, QTP is exploited to promote the documents for balanced exploitation-exploration, and eventually navigate a search towards goals. The evaluation asserts the usability of QTP measures to balance several seeking tradeoffs, e.g., relevance, novelty, result diversification (coverage, topicality), and overall retrieval. The assessment of user search trails indicates significant growth in a learning outcome (due to novelty).

In the era of internet communication, many electronic documents are spread and flow on the platform of website in every splits of seconds. The research interest for the process of knowledge discovery is changed from the traditional data to online data such as online news document classification. Most percentage of the online data is text document and therefore the optimization of multi-class document classification is becoming a challenge for today society. Traditional search policy for feature selection process is degrading with exhaustive search for complex feature in document classification. Therefore, meta-heuristic based computational search is also becoming good solution to overcome the problem of exhaustive search with exploitation process. The search policy of computational algorithm can provide the global optimal solution with random search approach on both exploitation and exploration process, and the selected search results of feature subsets can support the optimal classification results.

<p>Most applications, such as Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing (NLP), utilize document clustering to improve their analysis. The document consists of various features that are utilized to determine the similar and dissimilar documents. However, the traditional techniques consume high computation difficulties and convergence problems while analyzing high-dimensional data. The research difficulties are addressed with the help of Bacterial Foraging and Rough Set Analysis (BF-RSA). This study uses the TF-IDF features for analyzing similar documents. The extracted features are explored using the Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) approach that uses the exploration and exploitation characteristics to improve the overall clustering quality. The collected documents are analyzed using a roughest approach that generates the discernible matrix which helps to identify similar and dissimilar features. Then bacterial foraging method computes the fitness value according to their behavior to identify the optimal solution. The selected feature set is further analyzed in the roughest approximation condition to minimize the uncertainty and interpretability issues. The effective integration of bacteria foraging and rough set approach maximizes the feature selection accuracy and improves the clustering accuracy (97.05%) with minimum convergence speed (0.063 s).</p>

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the historical contributions of complex innovations (both creative and tactical components) in a formative period in a major Australian department store, David Jones Ltd. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a context-specific lens to examine complex retail innovation. The study adopts a longitudinal design with the focus on a single firm, which met the inclusion criteria. Data collection was predominately from company archival materials and publicly available documents, including newspapers. Findings An in-depth analysis of two complex innovations demonstrates the retailer’s successful management of both marketing exploration (innovation) and marketing exploitation of that innovation. Effective marketing requires operational, tactical marketing exploitation to dovetail marketing exploration. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to one successful department store. Notwithstanding, there are expectations that the lessons extend to many other retailing organizations. Practical implications The practical relevance is clear, with the emphasis on retail innovation (and especially complex innovation) as a basis for both surviving and thriving in an ever-changing marketing environment. Originality/value The use of a complex innovation approach is a novel way of examining marketing history. The study concludes that both marketing exploration and marketing exploitation are essential for retail longevity.

Purpose In highly dynamic industries, business processes require exploitation, i.e. activities that are associated with an increase in productivity through automation, standardization, integrated architectures, and the usage of existing IT resources. As a complementary capability, exploration is needed, i.e. the ability to flexibly implement new and innovative IT resources (Lee et al., 2015). The purpose of this paper is to use the concept of ambidexterity, which is researched intensively outside the domain of business processes (e.g. Gibson and Birkinshaw, 2004; Tang and Rai, 2014), to address this paradoxical trade-off within business processes. Design/methodology/approach The paper follows a qualitative approach. A multiple case study comprising 11 interviews and additional document analysis in six organizations is conducted in the German energy sector to examine the proposed framework. Findings This paper shows the importance of balancing exploitative and explorative business process IT (BPIT) capabilities. The process-theoretical outcome of this study is the BPIT Capability Framework that provides explanation for the interaction between exploitation and exploration. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to the understanding of how to build ambidextrous BPIT capabilities by explaining the underlying mechanisms for feedback loops that occur in cases of imbalance. The scope of the conducted study presents a limitation and thus future research is encouraged to further validate the findings of this paper. Originality/value By drilling down to the process level, this paper addresses the gaps that limited empirical studies have in business process management research (Recker and Mendling, 2015) and the focus on business processes that is lacking from the literature on organizational IT management (Gregory et al., 2015).

The increased adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may improve the productivity and cost-effectiveness of remote sensing in the mining industry. This review's objective is to enable stakeholders to identify possible application adoption, improvement, and innovation opportunities. The review merges a building block strategy and practical screening criteria to identify possible avenues of research to answer the review questions. After the screening process, 72 documents were included in the review. Papers were classified into four categories: exploration, development, exploitation, and reclamation. Fifteen applications were identified, the majority of which were in the exploration phase. The most often researched applications were topographic surveys, reclamation monitoring, and slope management. From the two UAV types identified, multi-rotor vehicles were the most favoured for all applications. From the eight remote sensing techniques identified, photogrammetry was the one most often used. Other techniques were limited because of complexity, cost, or the incompatibility of sensors and UAVs. The review was limited to published papers in academic journals. Future studies could aim to include empirical data on the latest UAV applications used in the mining industry.

Every human culture has reflected the Moon’s influence in its cosmology, spirituality, science, creative and social life. For these reasons, the exploration and use of the Moon should be done thoughtfully and carefully, and possible resource extraction should not harm the Earth's only satellite and its environment as a whole. The adoption by some States of national legislation affecting the commercial exploitation of space resources, as well as the resumption of lunar programs by several leading spacefaring nations at a time, prompt the need for legal regulation in this area. However, to develop a detailed international legal regime for lunar exploration, the efforts of the States parties to the UN COPUOS alone are not sufficient since in practice other actors in international relations, including the so-called epistemic communities representing various types of non-governmental organizations, are also active participants in space activities. Such communities offer their own vision of the international legal regulation of relations arising in the framework of the exploration and use of the Moon basing on the norms of international space law and involving active participation of non-governmental legal entities, considering the interests of present and future generations, as well as of emerging space nations. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of epistemic communities on the development of the future international legal regime for lunar exploration. The authors consistently review the activities of non-governmental organizations within the UN COPUOS since its formation. Special attention is paid to the contribution of such communities to the progressive development of international space law and its codification, including the legal nature of the documents developed by such communities. The study concludes with a comprehensive international legal assessment of the activities of the epistemic communities.

We document frequency distribution of 4315 two-party, non-equity alliances undertaken by the U.S. based firms between 1986 and 2015 in 11industries and find that on an aggregate basis, the firms which form multiple alliances based on the exploitation motive are as likely to enter into alliance as the firms that enter into multiple alliances based on the exploration motive. However, we find strong evidence that the firms that enter into alliances on three or more occasions are driven by the exploration motive while, the firms that enter into alliances one and one or two times are driven by the exploitation motive. The average cumulative abnormal returns (ACAR) for all of the three subsamples of firms that undertook one, one or two, and three or more alliances during the time period for this study are all positive but exhibit a declining trend. Firms that are larger in terms of total assets engage more frequently in alliances than smaller firms. Returns to firms that enter into three or more alliances are sensitive to the leverage employed and the likelihood of bankruptcy whereas returns to firms that enter into only one or one or two alliances are affected significantly by the considerations of competitive forces.

The exploration and exploitation of the downthrown side of the productive upthrown Pre-rifting reservoirs at the Gulf of Suez marked bring a renaissance to the rift basin Exploration. This work documents the reservoir performance, trap geometry, and structural style of the downthrown deep marine stratigraphic entrapment. In addition, it outlines the requirements necessary beyond the production mitigations and limits. To gain better understanding of Asl Formation (deep marine) reservoir characteristics early in the exploration program, Asl Formation was cored in the north October J-5 well. A continuous 366- foot (112m) core was recovered including the main reservoir interval, which is producing over 12,000 barrel of oil per day. The J-5 Asl Formation has been interpreted as a synthetic, mixed clastic-carbonate turbidity deposit. Three major lithofacies described are recognizable on electric log. These are sandstone, shale and carbonates. The sandstones dominate the lower portion of the core and are the main oil producing section. Sandstone porosity and permeability range from 17 to 27% and 30 millidarcies to 3 darcies, respectively. Compared to the sandstone, the carbonate turbidites have poorer reservoir quality. They dominate the upper portion of the core and are composed of coarse fossil debris, silica framework grains and rock fragments. Horizontal and vertical permeabilities with rock types. Both the sandstone and carbonate sections of the J-5 core have experienced a complex diagenetic history. Deposition of the cored interval was initiated by a convulsive geological event such as flashflood or earthquake. These events would likely generate sufficient energy for mobilization of onshore and/or near shore sediments into multiple gravity flows having regional extent. The reservoir quality is controlled by a combination of primary depositional fabric and subsequent diagenetic modification. This research work can guide future exploration of reservoir-prone deep marine deposits in the Red Sea Rift and provide a reference for the subsurface deep-water reservoir quality analysis in the propagation stage in the Rift Basins.

Metaheuristic algorithms are generic optimization tools to solve complex problems with extensive search spaces. This algorithm minimizes the size of the search space by using effective search strategies. Research on metaheuristic algorithms continues to grow and is widely applied to solve big data problems. This study aims to provide an analysis of the performance of metaheuristic research and to map a description of the themes of the metaheuristic research method. Using bibliometric analysis, we examined the performance of scientific articles and described the available opportunities for metaheuristic research methods. This study presents the performance analysis and bibliometric review of metaheuristic research documents indexed in the Scopus database between the period of 2016-2021. The overall number of papers published at the global level was 3846. At global optimization, heuristic methods, scheduling, genetic algorithms, evolutionary algorithms, and benchmarking dominate metaheuristic research. Meanwhile, the discussion on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference, forecasting, feature selection, biomimetics, exploration, and exploitation, are growing hot issues for research in this field. The current research reveals a unique overview of metaheuristic research at the global level from 2016-2021, and this could be valuable for conducting future research.

There is little known of the basic parameters of the Lower Silurian graptolitic black shales that are considered the most prospective unconventional gas reservoir in west Lithuania, situated in the deep central part of the Baltic sedimentary basin. Hundreds of deep oil exploration wells have been drilled in the area of interest, owing to extensive exploration of oil fields. The lower and middle Llandovery interval was mainly drilled with coring, while most of the section was covered by only logging. Therefore, the knowledge of major parameters of the Lower Silurian shales is rather obscure and is based on scarce rock sample data. The gamma-ray, electrical resistivity and sonic logs were utilised, together with mineralogical studies of rock samples to document vertical and lateral distribution of organic matter. Also, the brittleness index was defined to characterise the whole Lower Silurian section. Some unexpected trends were identified that may redirect exploration strategy in west Lithuania. The combined application of mineralogical studies and well logs indicate a much higher exploitation quality of the Lower Silurian shales than previously believed. A higher organic matter content and brittleness were derived from logging data in the Lower Silurian shales.

Many online services like Twitter and GNIP offer streaming programming interfaces that allow real-time information filtering based on keyword or other conditions. However, all these services specify strict access constraints, or charge a cost based on the usage. We refer to such streams as ``hidden streams'' to draw a parallel to the well-studied hidden Web, which similarly restricts access to the contents of a database through a querying interface. At the same time, the users' interest is often captured by complex classification models that, implicitly or explicitly, specify hundreds of keyword-based rules, along with the rules' accuracies. In this paper, we study how to best utilize a constrained streaming access interface to maximize the number of retrieved relevant items, with respect to a classifier, expressed as a set of rules. We consider two problem variants. The static version assumes that the popularity of the keywords is known and constant across time. The dynamic version lifts this assumption, and can be viewed as an exploration-vs.-exploitation problem. We show that both problems are NP-hard, and propose exact and bounded approximation algorithms for various settings, including various access constraint types. We experimentally evaluate our algorithms on real Twitter data.

Industrial heritage with secular production activity constitutes a specific field of application to refine digital tools for knowledge within the HBIM (Heritage Building Information Modeling) process. Industrial sites are traditionally linked to the exploitation of local resources, and, not infrequently, are settled by recovering the ruins of ancient buildings and monuments. The Sanctuary of Hercules in Tivoli represents a significant case study that moves between classical and industrial archaeology, in particular the “Cartierà Segrè”, hereinafter referred to as former Segrè papermill, to test ArchaeoBIM concepts and to investigate current and lost heritage. Starting from the documents and the digital survey with the use of UAV videogrammetry, the aim is the construction of the informative model with particular attention to the 4D management to describe the evolution phases and the exploration of the construction specificities of buildings and machines between pre-modern techniques and industrial age. The results show the possibility of creating a diachronic HBIM to investigate a complex industrial heritage, its evolution and production phases, modeling components for this type of architecture, with the deepening of the LOD of BIM (Building Information Modeling) instances applied to machines. The application represents an augmented knowledge process applicable on industrial heritage through modeling instances of machines and industrial processes that would allow regional and transnational cross-sectional studies and the enhancement of fruition and reuse of these sites.

Purpose of the study: The aim of this study is to examine the role of special autonomy funds in poverty reduction in Aceh and to find out how to deal with poverty in Aceh and what obstacles are faced by Aceh Government. Methodology: This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach to provide a detailed explanation and exploitation. Research data obtained through interviews and data obtained also through local and national online media and the media data were analyzed using Nvivo 12 Plus, specifically by using the NCapture feature, which allows researchers to systematically compile and analyze documents. Main Findings: This study found that the implementation of poverty reduction programs and policies is still in the form of false participation due to low transparency and accountability and economic dependence on other regions outside Aceh and the small number of medium and large industries in Aceh. Applications of this study: The findings of this study are useful for exploration by the Aceh Government in order to maximize the role of special autonomy funds in poverty alleviation efforts in Aceh. Novelty/Originality of this study: Research on the Aceh Special Independence Fund has been widely explained by a number of researchers. However, there is no publication that specifically explains the role of special self-government funds to reduce poverty. Consequently, the use of accountable and transparent special autonomy funds can reduce poverty in Aceh.

Extractive multidocument summarization is modeled as a modifiedp-median problem. The problem is formulated with taking into account four basic requirements, namely, relevance, information coverage, diversity, and length limit that should satisfy summaries. To solve the optimization problem a self-adaptive differential evolution algorithm is created. Differential evolution has been proven to be an efficient and robust algorithm for many real optimization problems. However, it still may converge toward local optimum solutions, need to manually adjust the parameters, and finding the best values for the control parameters is a consuming task. In the paper is proposed a self-adaptive scaling factor in original DE to increase the exploration and exploitation ability. This paper has found that self-adaptive differential evolution can efficiently find the best solution in comparison with the canonical differential evolution. We implemented our model on multi-document summarization task. Experiments have shown that the proposed model is competitive on the DUC2006 dataset.

Modern information systems are expected to assist users with diverse goals, via exploiting the topical dimension (‘what' the user is searching for) of information needs. However, the intent dimension (‘why' the user is searching) has preferred relatively lesser for the same intention. Traditionally, the intent is an ‘immediate reason, purpose, or goal' that motivates the user search, and captured in search contexts (Pre-search, In-search, Pro-Search), an ideal information system would be able to use. This article proposes a novel intent estimation strategy; based on the intuition that captured intent, and proactively extracts likely results. The captured ‘Pre-search' context adapts query term proximities within matched results beside document-term statistics and pseudo-relevance feedback with user-relevance feedback for In-search. The assessment asserts the superior performance of the proposed strategy over the equivalent on tradeoffs, e.g., novelty, diversity (coverage, topicality), retrieval (precision, recall, F-measure) and exploitation vs exploration.

Abstract Considering the fact that its existence is abundant while maintaining the ability to generate freshwater while burning, methane hydrates have been classified as sources of sustainable energy. China currently maintains an international role in developing technology meant to explore offshore methane hydrates buried under the mud of the seabed, their primary laboratory being the South China Sea. However, such a process does not come without its hazards and fatal consequences, ranging from the destruction of the flora and fauna, the general environment, and—the greatest hazard of all—the cost of human life. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (hereinafter ‘UNCLOS’), being an important international legal regime and instrument, has assigned damage control during the exploration of methane hydrates, as being the responsibilities and liability of individual sovereign states and corporations. China adopted the Deep Seabed Mining Law (hereinafter the DSM Law) on 26 February 2016, which came into force on the 1 of May 2016; a regulation providing the legal framework also for the Chinese government’s role in methane hydrate exploratory activities. This article examines the role of the DSM Law and its provisions, as well as several international documents intended to prevent transboundary environmental harm from arising, as a result of offshore methane hydrate extraction. Despite the obvious risk of harm to the environment, the DSM Law has made great strides in regulating exploratory activities so as to meet the criteria of the UNCLOS. However, this article argues that neither the UNCLOS nor the DSM Law are adequately prepared to address transboundary harm triggered by the exploitation of offshore methane hydrates. In particular, the technology of such extraction is still at an experimental stage, and potential risks remain uncertain—and even untraceable—for cross-jurisdictional claims. The article intends to seek available legal instruments or models, to overhaul the incapacity within the current governing framework, and offers suggestions supporting national and international legislative efforts towards protecting the environment during methane hydrate extraction.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize and make sense of the internationalization of the triple helix (TH) model. Design/methodology/approach – As this study is exploitative in nature, an inductive approach is adopted in data collection and data analysis. The Danish TH's experiences in China are used as empirical evidences. Primary data are collected from in-depth interviews and discussions, filed observations, and personal experiences. Secondary data such as the government policies and documents, companies’ annual reports, and reliable web sites are also included. Findings – The paper conceptualizes the internationalization of the TH into three stages: pioneering stage, exploration stage, and integration stage. In the pioneering stage, the authors see the establishment of each of the three helix spheres abroad, i.e. internationalization of companies, universities and governments; in the exploration stage, the three spheres start to interact abroad and collaborate with their counterparts in the host country; in the integration stage, helix to helix collaboration is emerging. Originality/value – This study has both theoretical and practical significance. It expands the existing TH theory by proposing a model for the internationalization of it. On the other hand, this study gives implications regarding utilizing global knowledge resources and enhancing innovation performances overseas.

Child labour has been of national and international concern since as early as the 1860s. In 2019 the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution that 2021 would be the year by which child labour would be eliminated. However, much must still be done to effect this. By studying legislation and literature, I identified different forms of child labour that I go on to discuss in this article. When I explored the notion of child labour from three perspectives on childhood, namely the romanticised view of childhood, the view that children must participate in child labour, and the belief that children need to be protected from the abuse and exploitation seen to be inherent in their working, I came to understand the tensions in conceptualising this concept. I further problematise child labour as an educational issue. One of the purposes of the South African compulsory school curriculum as articulated in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) is to facilitate the transition of learners from education institutions to their future workplaces. I argue that CAPS should provide in-depth knowledge on the meaning of child labour in its different forms. For the purposes of this research, I analysed all the compulsory school curricula documents for Grades 1 to 9 by means of document analysis. My main finding is that CAPS does address some forms of child labour, but it does not address those forms (child work and illegal labour) with which most children would likely be confronted. Also, it does not address hazardous forms of child labour nor trafficking in child labour. More research is needed to determine if there are correlations between the results of this explorative document analysis and the received curriculum so that a curriculum response to address child labour can be articulated.

The image of women that is actualized through the construction of gender roles, positions, and adaptation processes in artistic expression through Sintren and Kuda Kepang performances is very different. In this regard, the research aims to: (1) explain the forms of art performances of Sintren and Kuda Kepang; and (2) explain the image of women in the art performances of Sintren and Kuda Kepang in the context of gender reality and aesthetic exploration. The research was conducted on the art of Sintren Ujung Gede in Pemalang Regency and Kuda Kepang Turonggoseto in Semarang Regency. The research data were collected using the techniques of (1) observation, (2) interviews, and (3) document studies. The validity of the research data was carried out using the confirmability technique. The study used an interactive model analysis procedure, which was carried out with the stages of data collection, data reduction, data classification, and drawing conclusions. The results show that: (1) Sintren and Kuda Kepang arts are forms of traditional folk-art performances in which there is a scene of trance. This art is usually performed on stage or open arena by involving women as players; (2) The presence of women in the Sintren performances is a requirement that traditionally must be fulfilled until now. On the other hand, in the Kuda Kepang performances, the presence of women is a new phenomenon that provides opportunities and freedom for women to express themselves through dance. In the Sintren performance, the position of women becomes the center, subject, and object during the performance process. As a result, changes in the function of arts often result in the exploitation of Sintren dancers. On the other hand, in the Kuda Kepang art, the involvement of women with all their adaptations provides a new space for resistance to the existing gender stereotypes.

This research examines Radzi Sapiee’s travelogue in the form of a trilogy, which documents his travel experience as a writer. The study aims to review the success of the trilogy in discussing postcolonial discourse, and its search of identity This study employs the research framework by Thompson, who divided travel writing into two sections namely touristic travel and exploration travel, to analyse Radzi Sapiee’s quest, to find himself through a spiritual journey, which led to self- awareness causing existential changes. As such, Thompson’s search of identity and the others (2011) will be the main framework of this research to be applied to the Radzi Sapiee’s travelogue trilogy comprising of three books - Mencari Diri dan Erti, Menjejak Salasilah Kesultanan yang Hilang (2015), Menelusuri Jejak Leluhur (2016) and Membela Syair Kesultanan Aceh (2018). This study seeks to determine whether the writer had consciously sought this experience, or if he was just seeking to validate his instincts. The analysis of the data is divided into three sections following Thompson’s framework: exploitation and the others, hegemony of the mind, and effect on the others. The study found that this travelogue injects new life and provides a source of motivation and pride to the people of the Malay Archipelago who had long been considered as inferior to the western power. Radzi Sapiee has utilised literature as a cultural weapon to instil awareness and nurture pride in a heritage that had long been forgotten. The writer also uses literature as a medium to redeem the dignity and cultural legacy, as well as an identity which had been suppressed for a long time, by colonialism. In a wider context, this writing represents an effort to deconstruct and reconstruct a culture, and an individual in the culture.

Given that sudden breakthroughs in conquering the cosmos are expected, some basic questions about the law governing relations in respect to outer space and in it can be expected to be triggered, starting already with the issue how one has to call that law and what is its real content. The first part of the paper deals with the naming of this branch of law and concludes that for the time being the term outer space law is the best and widely accepted. In the second part, the author states that many scientific papers and even official documents, do not define outer space law at all. There are even opinions that the outer space is a phenomenon which cannot be defined at all, suggesting that it is not possible to define a cosmic right either. The author considers that a distinction should be made between national space law of states and international space law (space law in the narrow sense a branch of international law containing legal rules governing relations in respect to the space and in the space, and in particular the regime of that space and celestial bodies it contains, exploration and exploitation of the space, the regime of navigation in the space, the legal position of the astronauts and space objects, international legal liability for damage caused by space activities, etc.). When so is clearly stated, one can also speak of space law in a broad sense, which, in addition to the norms of space law in the narrow sense, would include norms that are part of soft law, agreements and legal customs between states and non-state entities, and even at some point so-called. metalaw (law that may one day govern relations between humanity and creatures of other worlds).

Based on documents from the archives of the French Foreign Ministry and the Russian State Archive of Modern History, the article analyzes Soviet-Algerian relations through the prism of the rivalry between Moscow and Paris in the period from Algeria's independence in 1962 to the nationalization in 1971 by the Algerian leadership of oil transportation facilities and 51% of the shares of French oil companies operating in the Arab state. In the first years after the signing of the Evian Agreements of 1962, loans provided by the USSR, supplies of Soviet equipment, the start of a program to train national personnel, as well as assistance from other socialist countries helped Algeria to stabilize the socio-economic situation in the country. Up until 1968, Moscow's actions in Algeria did not affect strategically important areas for France. However, the aggravation of French-Algerian relations due to Paris' non-compliance with the Algerian wine purchase agreement and, more importantly, the Algerian leadership's desire for independence from France in the oil sector and, at the same time, the beginning of supplies of Algerian wine to the USSR in 1968 and Moscow's assistance in the exploration and exploitation of oil fields in Algeria led to the beginning of the Soviet-French rivalry for the Algerian market. As a result, France and other Western countries were able to impose serious competition on the USSR, significantly reducing Moscow's capabilities in the Algerian direction. The USSR promoted Algeria's independence from France in the oil sector, but failed to make Algeria part of the socialist bloc. The main beneficiary of the Soviet-French rivalry was Algeria itself, which received significant support from the USSR in creating modern industry, agriculture and in the field of training qualified personnel, while retaining ample opportunities to enter Western markets.

Abstract Under Colombian petroleum legislation, certain procedures must be applied when an oil well that has been drilled turns out to be dry or must be abandoned due to mechanical problems. In these cases the steps of physical abandonment, dismantling of facilities and restoration must be fulfilled, a situation that can occur in any of the phases of the contract, leading to a variation in the obligations by the concessionaire according to the activities that must be performed in each phase. The Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos (ANH by its acronym in Spanish) is the administrator of the hydrocarbon resource in Colombia and within its functions is the concession aire of the areas for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. This document highlights the role of the ANH as a contractual subject and responsible for compliance with the contractual obligations between the Agency and the concessionaires as well as the rules and regulations established by law. Liabilities may arise in relation to non-fulfilment of these obligations, which have led to a series of solution mechanisms being devised, according to the special nature of the concession.

Resumo:
Ontologies are used to model knowledge in several domains of interest, such as the biomedical domain. Conceptualization is the basic task for ontology building. Concepts are identified, and then they are linked through their semantic relationships. Recently, ontologies have constituted a crucial part of modern semantic webs because they can convert a web of documents into a web of things. Although ontology learning generally occupies a large space in computer science, Arabic ontology learning, in particular, is underdeveloped due to the Arabic language’s nature as well as the profundity required in this domain. The previously published research on Arabic ontology learning from text falls into three categories: developing manually hand-crafted rules, using ordinary supervised/unsupervised machine learning algorithms, or a hybrid of these two approaches. The model proposed in this work contributes to Arabic ontology learning in two ways. First, a text mining algorithm is proposed for extracting concepts and their semantic relations from text documents. The algorithm calculates the concept frequency weights using the term frequency weights. Then, it calculates the weights of concept similarity using the information of the ontology structure, involving (1) the concept’s path distance, (2) the concept’s distribution layer, and (3) the mutual parent concept’s distribution layer. Then, feature mapping is performed by assigning the concepts’ similarities to the concept features. Second, a hybrid genetic-whale optimization algorithm was proposed to optimize ontology learning from Arabic text. The operator of the G-WOA is a hybrid operator integrating GA’s mutation, crossover, and selection processes with the WOA’s processes (encircling prey, attacking of bubble-net, and searching for prey) to fulfill the balance between both exploitation and exploration, and to find the solutions that exhibit the highest fitness. For evaluating the performance of the ontology learning approach, extensive comparisons are conducted using different Arabic corpora and bio-inspired optimization algorithms. Furthermore, two publicly available non-Arabic corpora are used to compare the efficiency of the proposed approach with those of other languages. The results reveal that the proposed genetic-whale optimization algorithm outperforms the other compared algorithms across all the Arabic corpora in terms of precision, recall, and F-score measures. Moreover, the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods of ontology learning from Arabic and non-Arabic texts in terms of these three measures.

Diabetes mellitus is the world’s major public health issue and has been dubbed the “Silent Epidemic” of the twenty-first century. This is the first ethnobotanical exploration to document the folk medicinal usage of plants with therapeutic antidiabetic properties by the Pnar tribes of East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Forty-one practitioners and knowledgeable people were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Field inventories were then conducted to collect plant material for botanical identification. In this study, 51 plant species belonging to 34 families and 45 genera have been identified. This study indicates that herbs were the most prevalent living form used (N = 23) for the treatment. Rhus semialata is one of the most frequently cited medicinal plants, with a Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) of 0.73. Moreover, the details about the phytochemicals and the pharmacological activities of identified plant species have been reviewed and disclosed. Agricultural expansion, deforestation, urbanization, and unscientific exploitation of the forests were cited most when respondents were asked about the threat to medicinal plants. Of the 51 plant species, 12 are included on the IUCN Red List. Therefore, this documentation of indigenous plants would create awareness about the importance of medicinal plants and their conservation and protection.

Introduction. Although there have been multiple studies done by both Russian and foreign specialist, one of the most poorly studied international law problems deals with interpretation and application of rules on safety of artificial islands, installations and structures. These measures encompass the coastal state’s right to enact legislation ensuring safety and security of these structures at sea.For the past ten years states have been outlining the need for review of the breadth of the safety zones around offshore installations, first and foremost, around installations and structures used for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources on the continental shelf. It’s of great importance to protect these structures, in particular from collision with ships, and to prevent accidents. The main reason behind this initiative is the increasing number of accidents on offshore oil rigs.Materials and methods. The basis for this research comprises the international treaties which set forth the regime of safety zones at sea. The materials for this paper are also commentaries of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, as well as relevant instruments adopted by IMO, related papers from all three UN conferences on the Law of the Sea, documents issued by the International Law Commission, and the IMO Sub-committee on safety of navigation. The methodological basis of present research consists of such traditional methods as general scientific and specific methods. The results of the study. The author of this paper proves the need for elaboration of more thorough international legal regime of safety zones at sea, since it is one the most principal means to ensure safety and security of offshore structures. Among the reasons is the ambiguous practice of coastal states, based on various approaches taken on the issue of safety zone’s breadth.Discussion and conclusion. The article contains thorough analysis of the international legal regime of safety zones, outlining its flaws. Conducted research emphasizes both positive and negative aspects of applicable national legislation, as well as unravels legal norms different from those enshrined in modern international law.

The expansion of value and form musicality in Tabot ritual music includes ideology, musicality and new sociocultural phenomena in the performing arts extend to all elements of Bengkulu society in general. The sacred music referred to in the Tabot rituals of Bengkulu is Dol music. The transformations in forms of Dol music and musicality are: sacred musicality becomes secular or profane. The physical form, function, and aesthetic of Dol music in Tabot rituals have an ever-increasing creativity in their development, musical progress and sociocultural-supporter progress. The commodification of Dol music transforms the artistic identity associated with new music from Bengkulu. The development of musicality moves freely, making changes in sacred ideology. This analysis reveals problems using social practice theory, hegemonic theory, and popular culture theory, applied eclectically by using a qualitative method. Data is collected Through observation, interview, and document study. The findings of this research are that there are forms of exploration and exploitation of Dol music from sacred to secular or profane and vice versa in the context of the commodification of physical musicality, function, and aesthetics in the ideological identity of the supporting community and the musical space dimension. The secular or profane Dol music permeates and indoctrinates the sacred Dol musical ideology as the musical ceremony of Tabot ritual. The counter-assumption about a sacred art form that will experience a shift into secular or profane is not entirely true for Dol music in Bengkulu.

Change is essential for organizations in sustainable growth and especially in a highly competitive business environment. The literature on the concepts of organizational change and restructuring is important in an effort to provide a reference for academics in exploring scientific developments as well as being useful for practitioners in providing options regarding the application of these concepts in the field. This study aims to provide an overview of the past, current and future research directions from the research field of Organizational Change & Restructuring, namely to see and provide links or relationships between the fields of organizational change and restructuring through bibliometric analysis. The method used in this study is a combination of quantitative and qualitative by mapping the relationship between Organizational Change and Restructuring research using a two-step research approach: 1) Bibliometric technique to analyze 263 publications by presenting publication distribution data, mapping visualization & network density, and keyword analysis. 2) Furthermore, based on document citation data, analyze the 12 articles that occupy the top number of citations. For further review of the literature, comparing with research findings before or after according to the theme of each article. The results of the study indicate that there is still a lot of room for exploitation and exploration of the combined study of Organizational Change and Restructuring, so it is hoped that by taking the two analytical steps above, it will eventually provide some kind of recommendation for future research.

This research-creation project, part of the DE\GLOBALIZE artistic research cycle, investigates the complexities of Congo violence, care, and colonialism. Drawing on Michel Serres' metaphor of the great estuaries, the study explores the topology of interactive documentaries, blending theory, emotion, and personal experiences. Accessible through the interactive web documentation at http://deglobalize.com, the platform offers a media-archaeological archive for speculative ethnography, enabling the forensic processing of single documents in line with actor-network theory. Focusing on the ambivalence of violence and care, the field trip to the Congo in March 2022 involved collaboration with local artists and was based on a postcolonial reflection from 1996. The outcome, a 30-minute autoethnographic essay titled Inner Congo, reflects on inner violence and its connection to colonialism, transcending the dichotomy between art and science. The study examines political, technological, and psycho-geographic borders, engaging with local communities to interrogate the displaced consumption of resources, ghost acreages, and self-lies. Informed by the works of Achille Mbembe and Franz Fanon, the research confronts the foreign, the dark, and the displaced ghosts within the participants. DE\GLOBALIZE is problematized as an example of epistemic violence for the ethnographic memory of (Western) knowledge. The study emphasizes the importance of caring for the sensitivity of the researchers' skin, the g/hosts, and mother earth. The encounters in the Congo reveal the palpable legacy of violence and the continued exploitation in post-colonialism. The Art Academy and the Mission Station serve as both havens for wounded souls and witnesses of a bloody European heritage. In Isiro, the researchers confront their own greed when meeting Trésor, a mine owner with 6,000 workers digging for gold. Violence constantly finds new ground, with totalitarian folds increasing in our psyches. Inspired by Sven Lindqvist's Gräv där du står (1978), the research emphasizes the need to face our brutality and demons through symbols and calculations that protect yet disenchant us simultaneously. Inner Congo offers a poignant and immersive exploration of the complexities of violence in the Congo, unearthing hidden narratives and inspiring critical reflection.

The article highlights the design process aimed to develop a non-existing object, which should correspond to all the requirements. As far as the physical creation of an object is started only after finishing the design process, the whole procedure includes discussing different models and information. The result of sea terminals design is the documentation which consists of not only the necessary for construction and exploitation information, but also almost all physical, operational, exploitation and financial parameters of the object. The elements of behavior research, i.e. exploration of the output parameters reaction to the change of input ones and the data that were calculated on the previous steps of the design process, is a necessary part of each next step. The variation of requirements to the precision, sustainability and specification of data on different steps of design require to use different in complexity and precision models to analyze them. The capitalization of infrastructural objects of sea transport, the acceptance of liquidity and the scale of social-economic impact on the society define the special requirements to this branch of activity, which are applied in strict regulation and formulation of rules of all design processes. It has been stated that the active rules define the methods of sea terminals design, but this definition has been unchanged for a long time. The great evolution of nature, structure and volumes of data bring a conflict with the documental requirements to the calculations. There are developed the general rules of mathematical modelling used as an instrument of design on different steps of sea terminals design. There is carried out a brief content analysis of the typical steps of a design process, which allows to correspond the consequence of technological design stages with using the statistical modelling and queueing theory design methods. It also includes the description of a new concept of simulation modelling, which allows to connect gnoseological advantages of this approach with universality of traditional methods. Saving the universality and objective process of consequent adequacy provement of all the described models allow to put a question of utilization of this instrument into the general rules and recommendations of sea terminal design.

One of the efforts in measuring the amount of ecotourism potential is by conducting a series of academic processes in the form of inventory and assessment of ecotourism potential or better known as ecotourism assessment. The Ecotourism Potential Evaluation method used is the theory of Avenzora (2008) to distinguish 7 assessment criteria for each element of ecotourism potential, which is then analyzed using the One Score One Criteria System method. The results of the study show that the Sungsang Ecotourism Area has a relatively high potential for eco-nature tourism and eco-culture tourism; both in terms of the potential for natural phenomena, flora and fauna, as well as material & immaterial heritage. The results of field studies prove that the various eco-nature tourism owned by the Sungsang Ecotourism Area is classified as relatively high (score 5); while eco-culture tourism is producing a score of 6 or high meaning. There are at least 4 syntheses that can be done in the future: 1) The plan for utilization of ecotourism resources that must be able to avoid the occurrence of over-supply dynamics in the ecotourism supply process; 2) The plan to utilize the diversity of ecotourism resources that should not cause over-exploration or over-exploitation of germplasm or ecosystems; 3) The need for study and application of the carrying capacity of recreation / tourism sites and the carrying capacity of recreation/ tourism destinations; 4) A more comprehensive, systematic and objective study is needed which is mapped and outlined in the Grand Design Document or Ecotourism Master Plan).

Purpose This paper aims to draw on the network perspective of organizational innovation to present an argument on how a subsidiary should select innovation behavior. Design/methodology/approach In this framework, the paper analyzes middle- and high-level managers of subsidiaries from various industries located in the Chinese Mainland. Findings The results suggest the following ideas: internal embeddedness is positively related to exploitation innovation, external embeddedness is inverted-U related to exploration innovation, the availability of alternatives positively moderates the main effects, whereas restraint in the use of power negatively moderates them. Research limitations/implications The current study has a few limitations that provide meaningful research directions for future investigations. First, it only considers the industry and ownership as control variables. Second, this study was conducted in the Chinese context. Practical implications The analysis of the relationship between embeddedness and innovation behavior also shows that focal subsidiary must dynamically adjust the way of embeddedness on the basis of its strategy, and it can reasonable leverage strategic assets for exploitation innovation or exploration innovation. From the perspective of headquarters, establishing deep embeddedness with a subsidiary and giving it indispensable support are important to promote that subsidiary’s exploitation innovation. Social implications The focal subsidiary should establish relationships with more alternative partners and develop relationships with power-advantaged partners through strategies such as a long-term contract, establishing an R&D alliance and entering a joint venture. Besides this, more powerful partners in the internal network should adopt various power usage strategies to promote focal subsidiary exploitation innovation and more powerful partners in the external network should show restraint in the use of power toward any subsidiary in an over-embedded situation. The result shows environment dynamism affects subsidiary exploration innovation more deeply than exploitation innovation. Consequently, managers should recognize the importance of dynamic adaptation to environmental changes and adjust their firms’ innovation behavior accordingly, especially when they are implementing an exploration innovation strategy. Originality/value The extent of embeddedness in an innovation network shapes the subsidiary innovation behavior, and this effect is moderated by power. The focal subsidiary should dynamically and strategically adjust its innovation behavior considering various its type and level of embeddedness.

Resumo:
This research article dwells upon the exploration of the various colours of humanism as reflected most impressively in Doris Lessing’s most famous novel, The Golden Notebook. During her long-spanning literary career, she did receive a very deep impression and motivation from her contemporary female-writers such as Mary Wollstone Craft, Kate Millet, Elain Showalter, Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf and some others. Like all these feminist-writers, she too was very deeply concerned with the mental harassment, rape-violence and the sexual exploitation of the females in the existing phallocentric society. She too accelerated the movement of feminism even in the contemporary period. Being a woman, she could understand much better the issues and the problems of the females. Thus, through her novels, she has very strongly advocated for the equality, liberty and fraternity to the females without any kind of gender-discrimination. She is not an object of sexual gratification, confined to the domestic activities, but rather she has her oven self-esteem, love and honour. She cannot lose her self-esteem at any cost. By dint of her novels, she very strongly raised her voices against gender-discrimination, social injustice, sexual exploitation, mental torture and misconduct being committed to the females. In her most famous novel, The Golden Notebook, she happens to introduce the two lady characters– Anna and Molly, living together in a London flat in 1957 in their free and independent life-style. These intermittent narrative frames four huge sections dedicated to Anna’s notebooks of the 1950’s,’ a black notebook dealing with the African experience, out of which, she has written her only novel; the red for politics – the decline and fall of the communist myth; blue a record of free relations with men, and of rosy dreams and sessions with her analyst; yellow in which she takes up stories; mostly drafts of a novel in which ‘Ella’ re-enacts a large part of Anna’s experience. In all this, what it means to be ‘free women’ is very thoroughly articulated and worked out. The question of living “lives like men” poses an illusion within the narrative. Despite Anna’s engagement in a sexual relationship with the same liberty as a man, it inevitably culminates in an undesirable dependency. This aspect alongside the overwhelming freedom of choice that stifles her literary endeavors, the unchecked freedom permitted by the world’s irresponsible state, and the paradoxical liberty of a woman obsessed with the notion of integrity, who is fatefully bound to navigate randomly to discern the significance of her actions, collectively construct the novel’s intricate framework. Despite the evident complexity, the novel’s most remarkable attribute does not lie in its profound or original difficulty. Contrarily, it resonates a compelling conviction of closely mirroring actual experiences. Within this realistic depiction, the anticipated concerns of a mid-twentieth-century writer organically find their respective positions, enhancing the authenticity and relatability of the narrative. It is simply an exceptional documentation of the experience of female autonomy and responsibility in connection to men and other women. It illustrates the endeavor to achieve self-reconciliation regarding these relationships, as well as issues of writing and politics. The document’s distinctiveness is highlighted by its unwavering honesty and extensive scope, providing a unique exploration of these multifaceted dimensions. It has got a very wide range of interest among the readers. Thus, it remains as a sort of the book that determines the way people think about themselves.

Sparse reward is one of the biggest challenges in reinforcement learning (RL). In this paper, we propose a novel method called Generative Exploration and Exploitation (GENE) to overcome sparse reward. GENE automatically generates start states to encourage the agent to explore the environment and to exploit received reward signals. GENE can adaptively tradeoff between exploration and exploitation according to the varying distributions of states experienced by the agent as the learning progresses. GENE relies on no prior knowledge about the environment and can be combined with any RL algorithm, no matter on-policy or off-policy, single-agent or multi-agent. Empirically, we demonstrate that GENE significantly outperforms existing methods in three tasks with only binary rewards, including Maze, Maze Ant, and Cooperative Navigation. Ablation studies verify the emergence of progressive exploration and automatic reversing.

Innovation enables organizations to invest in processes or products that increase their competitive advantage in the market. Thus, this research aims to conduct a bibliometric mapping of scientific production on Innovation Exploitation (incremental innovation) and Innovation Exploration (radical innovation), focusing on scientific articles published in journals in business, administration, accounting, and economics. However, a bibliometric analysis of the publications indexed in the Scopus database from 1995 to 2022 was performed and operationalized using RStudio’s Biblioshiny software. The search was performed by the keywords “Innovation Exploitation”, “Innovation Exploration”, and “Innovation Ambidexterity”, in the fields title, abstract, and keywords. After the filtration processes, the final sample comprised 746 scientific articles. The results of this research present an evolution of the theme over the years. In 1995, innovation was considered the creation or remodeling of products. In contrast, in 2020, innovation was defined as radical or incremental, in which the manager uses innovation as a strategy to increase sales and decreases production costs with the help of technology. Most publications (42.35%) occur after 2017, making clear the importance of the topic in recent years. Between 1995 and 2000, only 22 articles were published, and between 2017 and 2022, there were 408 studies. It was found that the author with the highest number of citations is American, and the country with the highest number of publications is the United States. However, the author with the highest number of publications is Italian, as well as the largest collaboration network, with Italy being the third country with the highest number of publications. Therefore, this study can be a starting point for future research or those interested in the topic.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the longevity implications of exploitation and exploration. It examines the main effect of exploitation, the main effect of exploration, and the interaction effect of exploitation and exploration on organizational longevity. Design/methodology/approach – This study employs Cox Proportional Hazard Model in analyzing 20-year data from the hard disk drive industry. Findings – Exploitation, independent of exploration, has a positive impact on organizational longevity. Exploration, independent of exploitation, has a curvilinear impact on organizational longevity. Jointly, exploitation weakens the curvilinear relationship between exploration and organizational longevity. Research limitations/implications – This study challenges the dualistic view that exploitation is for “current viability” and exploration is for “future viability.” It suggests that firms need to actively engage in (instead of compromise) both exploitation and exploration in order to prolong their lifespan despite the counter force triggered by the negative dynamics between exploitation and exploration. Practical implications – In order to prolong organizational longevity, firms need to fully engage in (but not compromise) their existing product-market domains, actively explore (but not over-explore) their new product-market domain, and to embrace (but not avoid) the tension between exploitation and exploration. Originality/value – This study is one of the few that systematically and empirically examined the longevity implications of exploitation and exploration. It adds specificity and precision to the understanding of how exploitation and exploration, independently and jointly, affect organizational longevity.

Purpose This study aims to fill three theoretical gaps in previous literature on exploration and exploitation: the relationship between exploration and exploitation is inconclusive; the influences of exploration and exploitation on firm performance are not consistent; and no empirical studies have integrated the antecedents of exploration and exploitation from the different research fields. Design/methodology/approach The study conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively synthesize 143 studies with 257 independent samples to understand the relationship between exploration and exploitation and their consequences and antecedents. Findings The results show that exploration and exploitation are positively correlated with each other, and both of them can boost firm performance. Moreover, firm capabilities, firm size, firm age, competitive intensity, market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation positively influence exploration, and firm resources, firm capabilities, firm size, firm age, market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation positively influence exploitation. Competitive intensity negatively influences exploitation. Surprisingly, market turbulence does not significantly influence exploration or exploitation. Originality/value The results not only contribute to the theories by reconciling the inconsistent results but also provide insight for firms with guidance about under what conditions they should use what strategies.
