Many ecosystems are wholly microbial and the activities of microorganisms provide the biochemical foundation for plant and animal life. ‘Microbial ecology and evolution’ describes how plants depend upon the complex redox reactions of microbes that fertilize the soil by fixing nitrogen, converting nitrites to nitrates, enhancing the availability of phosphorus and trace elements, and recycling organic matter. Eukaryotic microorganisms are similarly plentiful and essential for the sustenance of plants and animals. Bacteria, archaea, and single-celled eukaryotes are the masters of the marine environment, harnessing the energy that supports complex ecological interactions between aquatic animals. Bacteria and archaea form 90% of the ocean biomass and surface waters are filled with eukaryotic algae.

Resumo:
Cell structures and metabolic processes are specified by genes. The genomes of bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotic microorganisms are encoded in double-stranded helices of DNA. ‘Genetics and molecular microbiology’ explains that advances in sequencing techniques and the development of automated sequencing methods have allowed scientists to sequence the genomes of 4,000 bacterial genomes, 200 archaea, and 200 eukaryotes. Genome sizes vary a great deal within each category of microorganism and the largest prokaryote genomes overlap the smallest eukaryote genomes. Natural mutations in microorganisms play a primary role in evolution. Reproduction in prokaryotes is always asexual, whereas mechanisms of sexual reproduction have been studied in eukaryotic microorganisms belonging to all of the supergroups.

This volume represents the proceedings of the homonymous international conference on all aspects of impact cratering and planetary science, which was held in October 2019 in Brasília, Brazil. This volume contains a sizable suite of contributions dealing with regional impact records (Australia, Sweden), impact craters and impactites, early Archean impacts and geophysical characteristics of impact structures, shock metamorphic investigations, post-impact hydrothermalism, and structural geology and morphometry of impact structures—on Earth and Mars. These contributions are authored by many of the foremost impact cratering researchers. Many contributions report results from state-of-the-art investigations, for example, several that are based on electron backscatter diffraction studies, and deal with new potential chronometers and shock barometers (e.g., apatite). Established impact cratering workers and newcomers to this field will both appreciate this multifaceted, multidisciplinary collection of impact cratering studies.
